On the Alabama Gulf Coast, along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, there is a town that drips with Southern hospitality. A town that is both quaint and contemporary at the same time but has never lost its charm. I’m speaking of the town of Fairhope.

What attracts people to Fairhope are its simple pleasures — arts, recreation, entertainment, dining — and the people who live here, never being pretentious, always warm and inviting, welcoming visitors to town as if they were family. After spending a weekend in Fairhope, you will find yourself coming back time and time again.

Things To Do In Fairhope

Fairhope is a walking town.

Fairhope residents love to walk, and for good reason — some amazing walking paths and scenery can be found here. Start downtown on the campus of Coastal Community College on Fairhope Avenue and stroll along the tree-lined path of the Marietta Johnson Botanical Garden and Tree Trail. The path meanders through rows of fiery red and brilliant white azaleas, flowering camellia and hydrangea, and a variety of tree species including the rare dawn redwood .

The most popular path in town is found at Fairhope’s Town Square, the Fairhope Municipal Pier and Park on North Beach Road . Here, you can stroll down the beaches of Mobile Bay’s eastern shore along shady lanes to visit the duck pond, tree trail, the park’s centerpiece — the gorgeous rose garden and fountain — and a walk far out into the bay on the fishing pier to catch a spectacular sunset.

Fairhope is dotted with art galleries that feature the works of incredible local artists and national artists.

Begin with a visit to the Eastern Shore Arts Center (ESAC) on Oak Avenue . The center features rotating exhibits of inspired works by renowned painters and sculptors and offers workshops for aspiring artists. A highlight each year is ESAC’s Art Walk that is held the first weekend of March to the last weekend in April with their big outdoor art show.

Downtown Fairhope is also ringed with stimulating and inspirational artwork at its many private galleries such as Gallery by the Bay and the Fairhope Artist Gallery .

On the musical side, the renowned Baldwin Pops hosts events throughout the year where they play an eclectic array of music from big band to jazz to the classics. Their most popular performances are their annual Christmas show and their show on the bluff overlooking Mobile Bay prior to the city’s Fourth of July fireworks display.

There is never an admission fee to attend a Baldwin Pops concert, but seating is first-come, first-served so get there early.

Festivals, Celebrations, And Holidays

Another thing Fairhope is known for is its annual celebrations and festivals. Things kick off every spring with Mardi Gras . That makes sense since the celebration was born right across the bay from the city in Mobile . The exact date of Mardi Gras is variable since it begins two weeks before Lent. Fairhope has its own incredible parades put on by mystic societies like the Knights of Ecor Rouge , the Maids of Jubilee, and the Mystic Mutts of Revelry , which is a special parade just for pets that helps raise money for Fairhope’s no-kill animal shelter, the Haven .

No matter what parade you come to see, find the parade schedule and route online , arrive really early — at least two hours to get a good spot — then let the good times roll, catching Moon Pies and colorful beads from the amazing ornate floats.

Spring really kicks into gear with the annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival . Held the last weekend of April, the fest brings in hundreds of artisans from around the country who line the downtown streets.

The Fourth of July is spectacular as the Baldwin Pops plays selections of movie scores and John Phillips Sousa marches from high atop the bluff that overlooks Mobile Bay. Spectators spread out their picnic blankets and deck them out with everything from simple picnic dinners with lemonade and ice pops to elaborate displays with candelabras and buckets of chilled wine. Admission is free.

And then there is Christmas. Just like all cities, Fairhope has an annual tree lighting , but not just one — all the trees that line main street and the side streets of town are adorned with over one million lights. It’s a magical event with snow pumped in, hot chocolate and candy canes, choirs and bands, and a parade.

When walking the streets of Fairhope, you will quickly discover that the city has an eclectic array of shops and something for every taste.

One of the most popular shops is Page and Palette on South Section Street, a good old cozy book store with plenty of amenities for everyone, even if you’re not shopping for a good read to cozy up with. Inside you’ll find the Latte Da Coffee Shop where you can sip on a double shot, extra foam latte while thumbing through a magazine. There are regular appearances and presentations by authors and local bands as well.

There’s nothing fancy about it — just order from their menu that features an arm’s length of sandwiches including the local favorite chicken salad sandwich, the messy and tangy Reuben, and a true Southern comfort food: pimento cheese, plus a variety of salads and the “Not-Quite-Lunch” menu with several different breakfast sandwiches. And you can’t leave without trying Sandra’s Coconut Cake, which Southern Living magazine raved about. But remember, they are only open for lunch, so jump in line, grab your meal, and take a seat in the outdoor dining area.

It doesn’t have to be St. Patrick’s Day to experience a wee bit of Ireland in Fairhope. Just visit McSharry’s Irish Pub on North Bancroft. Traditional Irish beer-battered Fish and Chips, hearty Shepherd’s Pie, and Celtic Fried Chicken Wraps tossed in their own spicy sauce top the list of local favorites, but that’s only a small sampling of the menu. Top it off with a pint of Guinness Draught or Fairhope’s own Fairhope Amber, add in a good dose of traditional Irish music every Sunday evening, and you’ll be whisked away to the Emerald Isle. There is indoor dining and seats outside on their “Paddy-O.”

For something completely different, take your tastebuds to R Bistro and Pantry on Fairhope Avenue . The bistro takes Southern comfort food to a new level with delectable Crawfish Beignets served with roasted corn tartar sauce, warming Crawfish Mac and Cheese, or mouthwatering Soft-Shell Crabs served up with a nutty hazelnut brown butter. And that’s only starters.

For casual fine dining, I would recommend Tamara’s Downtown . The menu runs the gambit from incredible succulent Rack of Lamb to mouthwatering, juicy, cooked-to-perfection steaks and seared sea scallops. Better yet, since we are on the Gulf Coast — one of the few places on Earth where Jubilees occur — try the Jubilee Pasta. Made with either penne or linguini, the dish is loaded with the freshest Gulf shrimp, scallops, crabmeat, and crawfish served with the sauce of your choice. Enjoy your meal in either the grand dining room or New Orleans-style courtyard.

Best Hotels In Fairhope

After a busy day exploring Fairhope, it’s time to call it a day. You have plenty of options for where to lay your weary head.

Described as “not just another B and B,” Emma’s by the Bay on South Mobile Street is an upscale bed and breakfast with single and double queen suites as well as deluxe suites with spectacular views of Mobile Bay, spa treatments, and in-room massages. Emma’s is centrally located and only a short walk from shopping, the pier, and parks.

Point Clear Cottages offers two options — the Bayshore Cottage and Pelican’s Rest Apartment. Both have gorgeous views of the bay with private bayside piers and hot tubs.

If you are planning an extended stay in Fairhope, then Jubilee Suites might be for you. Jubilee offers seven luxurious suites each with kitchen, dining, and living room and bay view porches or balconies.

There are also national hotel chains available in town including Hampton Inn , Holiday Inn Express , and the luxurious Marriott’s Grand Hotel in nearby Point Clear.

As you see, there isn’t any one best time to visit Fairhope. The city has so much to do and see any time of year that you would be hard-pressed to find a bad time to visit. Having said that, the city gets very crowded during its many festivals and celebrations. If you are visiting downtown, it’s best to park on one of the side streets off the main road, Fairhope Avenue. That way, it will be easier for when it’s time to leave.

The beach at the pier is open year-round and is free most of the time, but from Memorial Day to Labor Day, there is an entrance fee per car.

15 Best Things to Do in Fairhope (AL)

Nestled along the shoreline of Mobile Bay, lies the charming city of Fairhope, Alabama . Founded in 1894, Fairhope was the beacon of a model colony, based on equality, co-operation and free from private monopolies.

Today, the city is more of a boutique seaside resort and a known affluent suburb of Mobile city located across the bay.

Fairhope is famous for its “jubilee”, a natural phenomenon which occurs on the shores, when flounder, crabs and shrimp swarm in high density along the shallow bay. This celebrated regular event provides fisherman with easy to catch seafood and attracts tourists from miles around.

Visitors to Fairhope are blessed with exceptional shopping, dining, nature preserves, and there’s also plenty of beautiful beaches to enjoy.

I’m from Alabama and visited Fairhope numerous times, I think it’s a great holiday destination with lots to do in the area. I’m sure you will enjoy my list of the best things to do in Fairhope:

1. Fairhope Municipal Pier

Offering stunning views over Mobile Bay, Fairhope Municipal Pier is one of my favorite attractions of the city.

Whether you wish to walk in the park admiring tended rose gardens, cycle the promenade or picnic by the shores, you can do it all here.

Sit by the fountain or take your binoculars to spot herons and rare sea birds.

If you venture to the pier just before sunset, you can gain exceptional photo opportunities, or you can take a romantic waterfront stroll before dinner.

2. Fairhope Avenue

Fairhope Avenue is the heart of the city. With an abundance of independent shops, art galleries and book stores, it’s the perfect place to pick up handicrafts, antiques or a souvenir of your Alabama stay.

This quaint city has a relaxed feel to it, and locals welcome newcomers, displaying good old fashioned Southern hospitality.

There are superb restaurants serving International and regional cuisine, where you can enjoy a light lunch or elegant dinner with friends and loved ones. I had dinner recently at Pearl Restaurant , which I can highly recommend, especially if you enjoy seafood.

A special time to stroll along Fairhope Avenue is around the festive season, when it is lit a thousand bulbs and decorations to get you into the Christmas spirit.

3. Fairhope Museum of History

Fairhope Museum of History tells the fascinating story of the city, beginning with Native American Indian settlers, to the reformists whose goal was to achieve a single tax utopia, to the present day.

The museum houses a collection of artifacts ranging from early clay pottery to Civil War and Mobile Bay boat exhibits.

It is set in an historic Spanish Mission-style building which dates back to 1928 and is open 5 days a week.

If you enjoy delving into local history like I do, don’t miss this superb educational facility in Downtown Fairhope.

4. Weeks Bay Reserve

Weeks Bay Reserve sits 11 miles southeast of Fairhope where the rivers meet the sea.

This superb reserve is one of 25 in the area which aims to protect shorelines and estuary waters of Mobile Bay for education and research.

The nearby visitor center exhibits animal displays and indigenous plants and offers visitors the opportunity to take a self-guided nature trail through wetlands, forests and marshes.

I think It’s a perfect day out for those interested in discovering more about diverse eco-systems and local wildlife of Alabama.

5. Eastern Shore Art Center

Founded in 1954 by local artists, Eastern Shore Art Center has grown from a one-room gallery to five exhibition galleries and four teaching studios.

With a whole host of monthly exhibits, adult and children art classes, and regular organised art walks, it’s a great place to learn about art, and unleash your own creative talents.

The center boasts a sculpture trail, gift shop and galleries feature art, ceramics and woodwork from Alabama artists.

6. Tolstoy Park

Tolstoy Park is home to the Henry Stuart House, built by an Englishman of the same name who emigrated to America.

Henry was living in Idaho when he was advised to move to a warmer climate due to a health condition. He purchased the land outside Fairhope and named it Tolstoy Park.

He made this land his home for almost 20 years, building the so-called ‘Hermit House’, growing his own food and using a loom to weave rugs in his spare time.

The domed house, in which Henry Stuart lived is about 14 feet in diameter with two skylights in the round roof.

The house has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and a novel based on Henry Stuart’s life ‘The Poet of Tolstoy Park’ was released in 2005. It’s an interesting park to visit if you are interested in learning more about local characters, architecture and history.

7. Fairhope Brewing Company

Opened by a group of craft beer connoisseurs in December 2012, the Fairhope Brewing Company began with just 2 beers on tap – their Everyday Ale and Section Street Wheat.

Today, this trendy brewhouse in central Fairhope has 14 craft beers and a cider on tap with myriad flavors to tempt all taste buds.

Whether you like your ale fruity, crisp or prefer a glass of stout, this brew company has it covered. I tasted a few beers here and really loved ‘La Vida Loca’, a sour ale.

They host live music and trivia nights, where you can mingle with locals and even dance a little, plus children are welcome, so you don’t have to leave the family at home!

8. Gator Alley Boardwalk

If you thought you would only see alligators out in Mobile Bay, think again! Gator Alley Boardwalk, 9 miles north of Fairhope allows you to see these majestic creatures up-close and personal.

The boardwalk is close to apartment blocks, hotels, and office buildings, and if you’re lucky you can see alligators swimming beneath the boardwalk, wandering the shoreline or laying stealthily in the swamps.

There are information boards along the route, but you may have to stay a while to spot the gators as they like to hide.

It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours, but perhaps leave your furry friends at home.

9. Gambino’s Italian Grill

One of the most popular restaurants in Fairhope is Gambino’s Italian Grill .

Located on Laurel Avenue close to the waterfront of Mobile Bay, this restaurant has been family-owned and operated since 1975. Serving a selection of traditional Italian classics and locally-caught seafood, you can enjoy pasta with freshly-made sauces, or a choice of chicken and steak dishes.

Alternatively, try the Shrimp Scampiano pan-fried in Blue-Fox butter, served with ripe tomatoes, the Gulf Triggerfish fillet, or delicious vegetarian cuisine.

Several nights a week, this elegant restaurant has a live pianist accompanying diners as they eat, and you can hire the venue for private events and parties.

10. Marietta Johnson Museum

Marietta Johnson was a pioneer in the field of organic education.

In 1907 she opened a school in Fairhope which vowed to teach children to learn in their own unique way without the need for standardized testing.

The school teaches yoga to children, to allow them to connect with themselves, encourages kids to express their creativity and most importantly, to enjoy playtime! The museum is located inside the school, showcasing a range of artifacts, exhibits, photos and videos which tell the story of organic education and how it has benefited children from 1907 to the present day.

11. Village Point Park Preserve

If you yearn to be at one with nature, I suggest heading north to the city of Daphne and Village Point Park Preserve.

With picturesque walking trails, winding pathways transport you through forests and across swampland to Mobile Bay.

Take a picnic and stay a while at the beach before venturing back to spot wildlife, flowers and trees indigenous to the region.

12. Rock Creek Golf Club

In a prime location off the eastern shores of Mobile Bay is popular Rock Creek Golf Club.

This is one of Southern Alabama’s best golf courses, designed by veteran architect Earl Stone.

This golf course is suitable for all skill levels with 18 challenging holes stretching over 6,900 yards.

With manicured fairways flanked by trees, pristine greens and an award-winning club house restaurant, it’s the perfect way to spend a relaxing day near Fairhope.

Just 30 miles southeast of Fairhope lies beautiful Gulf State Park.

With two miles of pure white sandy beaches, piers where you can watch spectacular sunsets, and 25 miles of back-country trails for hiking and cycling, there’s something for everyone.

14. Orange Beach

Visitors can take a cruise out onto the Gulf of Mexico for a spot of dolphin watching or learn a new skill like scuba diving or snorkeling.

15. Meaher State Park

If you wish to stay closer to Fairhope, Meaher State Park is just 13 miles north of the city.

The 1,327-acre park located in the Mobile Bay wetlands, is a popular place for walking, picnicking and fishing.

You can stroll along the boardwalk and admire the natural beauty of the delta, or hike along self-guided nature trails to discover flora and fauna of the region.

I visited the nearby 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center, which is very interesting if you wish to learn more about Delta eco-systems. With over 250,000 acres of scenic waterways, wetlands and woodlands, the educational center and exhibit hall teaches you all about the Mobile Delta.

A Southern Town That’s Been Holding On to Its Charm, for More Than a Century

Fairhope, in Alabama, thrives as a place for artists, intellectuals and people of outsize character.

A group of populist reformers from up north arrived in Alabama in November 1894 with a radical plan. Their mission: to establish an experimental utopian community inspired by the economist Henry George, whose wildly popular book, “Progress and Poverty,” influenced readers around the world in search of more equitable societies. In this case, their chosen setting was a swath of pine- and pasture-covered land perched high on a bluff overlooking Mobile Bay. There, wrote one of the founders, Ernest B. Gaston, these pioneers would build “a city set upon a hill, shedding its beneficent light to all the world.” Somewhat more modestly, they christened their settlement Fairhope, asserting that their dream community would have “a fair hope” of succeeding.

Henry George’s acolytes put their faith in his concept of a “single tax” colony where the community owned the land and homeowners paid an annual tax that funded the creation of parks and public amenities. The founders set aside nearly a mile of beachfront as public parkland, writes a local historian, Cathy Donelson, in her book, “Fairhope.” They quickly drew more settlers — and soon vacationers, too. Early tourists arrived by steamboat, enticed with attractions like the giant water slide that deposited frolickers directly into the bay, while the annual Shakespeare festival offered free outdoor performances that used the scenic natural setting as a stage.

Fairhope’s blend of natural beauty and eccentric ambition continued to attract artists, writers and intellectuals. The noted progressive educator, Marietta Johnson, opened her School of Organic Education in town. Clarence Darrow, the original super-lawyer, was a fan of the single-tax philosophy and wintered in Fairhope in the 1920s and ’30s. Upton Sinclair wrote his novel “Love’s Pilgrimage” in a tent on the bluff.

A century later, Fairhope is still a draw for writers seeking a peaceful retreat, for art lovers — most notably during the annual Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival in March — and for many other vacationers, no shortage of whom fall for this unheralded setting and decide to stay.

“It’s just a magical little place,” said the author Fannie Flagg. “There are people that have come there from all over the world. Once they see it, there’s a charm about it that they just love.” Ms. Flagg was born in Birmingham and first visited Fairhope as a child. She was lured back years later. “When I started writing, I was living in New York and wanted a place to get away, so I thought, ‘Why don’t I go down to Fairhope?’” She wrote her first book in Fairhope, then returned again to pen the Oscar-nominated screenplay for “Fried Green Tomatoes.” She kept a home in Fairhope for many years, and still returns frequently.

“I don’t know what it is, but there’s an amazing amount of artistic talent that is all gathered here in this one place,” said the writer Sonny Brewer, who has lived in Fairhope since 1978. Mr. Brewer, who formerly ran a bookstore in town, founded the Fairhope Center for the Writing Arts , which invites writers-in-residence for monthlong stays in a 1920s cottage tucked behind the city’s public library. Fellow scribes, Mr. Brewer said, have joked about erecting a billboard welcoming visitors to “Fairhope, Alabama, the home of more writers than readers.”

A serene pace of life

Today, Fairhope is still anchored by its public beachfront, with scenic views available from the Municipal Pier that stretches 1,448 feet out over the bucolic bay, and from the tree-lined Henry George Park up on the bluff. A short stroll up the hill, past shady streets where rocking chairs sway on porches, is the very walkable downtown. Sidewalks are filled with more than a dozen different public art pieces and copious flowers in all seasons, from beds of petunias in summer to snapdragons in the dead of winter. New and historic buildings are home to antique stores such as Crown & Colony , indie boutiques, and galleries like Eastern Shore Art Center, which runs a first Friday art walk.

Charming cafes and restaurants abound, a mix of longtime local favorites like Julwin’s, a greasy spoon that dates to 1945, and hipper newcomers like Refuge Coffee , where a young woman in a hijab recently sipped espresso next to a couple with copious face piercings, and a retiree from Seattle warned that “they’re a little snobby about their coffee here.” Most Fairhope venues fall somewhere in between, like Locals, a small, no-frills space where grass-fed-lamb burgers and elderberry kombucha are on the menu.

From March 15 to 17 this year, a large part of downtown will be taken over by the 67th annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival , which brings in more than 300,000 visitors. Streets are closed to traffic and given over to wares from nearly 200 different artists, along with performances from the likes of jazz bands and dance crews. Later in spring there are sunset concerts near the bay by the Baldwin Pops, while fall brings the Fairhope Film Festival, including outdoor screenings in an amphitheater downtown.

The place where Fairhope’s founding spirit is most alive is perhaps Page and Palette , an independent bookstore that has stood near the center of town for over 50 years. The bar and event space hosts eclectic audiences for readings and performances several evenings each week, and regulars fill the on-site coffee shop. On Tuesdays and Thursdays for the past decade, two longtime locals have operated “Sonya and Nancye’s Friendly Advice booth” inside the coffee shop, sitting behind a wooden booth inspired by Lucy from the “Peanuts” comic strip and doling out sage advice for a nickel per customer.

“The two of them were just great, loyal customers,” said Page and Palette’s owner, Karin Wilson. “When the bottom fell out in 2008, we really thought we were going to have to close. They were very concerned about our store; they wanted to meet with me and ask how they could help. We were meeting in the coffee shop and someone said something along the lines of, ‘What are ya’ll doing here?’ One of them said, ‘Oh, we’re solving the world’s problems.’ I jokingly said they should do an advice booth, and the idea stuck. They’ve been here every Tuesday and Thursday since,” offering thoughts and comfort to anyone in need of a friendly ear. “They’re two women that everyone feels comfortable talking to. It’s something very special that they created.”

A plan for smart development

Ms. Wilson’s grandmother opened Page and Palette as an art supply and book store in 1968; her father eventually spun off a frame shop and gallery next door. Ms. Wilson bought the bookstore in 1997, adding the coffee shop and bar/event space, while her twin sister, Kelley Lyons, purchased the frame shop, now Lyons Share Custom Framing and Gallery.

In a twist, the independent bookseller is now also the city’s mayor — Karin Wilson jumped into politics in 2016 with a successful campaign centered around a platform of smart development. Fairhope is now one of Alabama’s fastest growing cities, with a 27 percent growth in population from 2010 to 2017.

“There’s this charm that we don’t want to lose,” Mayor Wilson said. “Owning the store, we meet so many people who say, ‘We’ve always wanted to live in a community like this.’ People choose to be here for a very specific reason and they’re very motivated about keeping it that way.”

Certainly, there’s much about modern Fairhope that seems a far cry from its socialist-leaning heyday. The Fairhope Single Tax Corporation maintains a charming old-world office on Fairhope Avenue, but today it owns only about 20 percent of the land in Fairhope. Those who live on that 20 percent technically lease the land and pay a single tax to the FSTC that includes their property taxes and a small fee. The other 80 percent of homeowners own the land beneath their homes. All are free to buy and sell as they please. Historic homes along the waterfront can get multimillion-dollar prices.

For visitors, there are a host of rental homes scattered around downtown, plus elegant inns and B&Bs like Emma’s Bay House near the water. Just south of Fairhope is the Grand Hotel, a sweeping 172-year-old property set on a 550-acre expanse that includes two golf courses and a spa. The city’s rapid development means there are now enticing new spots further afield, like the Fairhope Brewing Company , which opened in 2013 in a former tabletop manufacturing facility about a mile from the main stretch of downtown. A huge mural of an oak tree sprouting hops instead of leaves covers the outside of the adjacent bottling building (the artist, Sarah Rutledge Fischer, is the wife of one of the brewers).

The brewery also makes a coffee stout with beans sourced down the road at Fairhope Roasting Company , which shares a garage-door-fronted space with Warehouse Bakery & Donuts. The latter serves up old-style chocolate glazed doughnuts, and more new-school breakfast biscuits stuffed with fried eggs, small-batch bacon and spicy mayo. One door down at District Hall, there’s rock ‘n’ roll bingo with whiskey-infused burgers.

It’s still the serene pace of life that lures most people to Fairhope.

“When I was working on ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’ here,” Fannie Flagg recalled, “writing a screenplay is so very difficult and some days I thought I would just pull my hair out. Every afternoon, I would walk across the street from my house and out onto the pier. I would sit there and watch the sun go down. The church was right behind me. The bells would ring and it would just be so peaceful right there in that spot. It kept me sane.”

With much to see and do in this idyllic spot, combined with the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of the area, spending a long weekend in Fairhope combined with a memorable stay at the Grand Hotel & Resort at Point Clear is time and money well spent.

Spend a Picture-Perfect Day in Fairhope

Savor beignets for breakfast at panini pete’s.

Whether you go for breakfast, Sunday brunch, or lunch, eating at Panini Pete’s makes for a deliciously memorable experience. Pete’s “Muffaletta” Panini has even been listed as one of the “100 Things to Eat in Alabama Before You Die.”  

But what will keep me coming back every time I’m in Fairhope is an order of the “Hip Hip Beignets” served, oddly enough, with large wedges of lemon to squeeze on top. Fluffy puffs of delight blanketed with a heavy dusting of powdered sugar. When you squeeze the lemon and take a bite, the melding of the acidic lemon with the sugar and bread creates a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth combo. 

Panini Pete’s is located in the heart of Fairhope’s charming, vine-encased “French Quarter” accessed through one of two romantic alleyways. When you finish eating, take time to stroll to the other shops hidden away in the French Quarter. 

I had never intended to visit the Fairhope Visitor Center or even the Fairhope Museum for that matter, but after stepping into the visitor center to use the restroom facilities, the friendly guides with their helpful maps of the town and all of the businesses and restaurants concisely listed convinced me to pay a short visit to the museum next door. 

20-30 minutes is all you need, and it is an enlightening and entertaining experience. Here you can learn more about the origins of Fairhope and what the founders hoped to achieve.

You can also learn about the unique occurrences in the region, such as the famed and fabled “Jubilee,” the unpredictable, somewhat mystical occurrence where loads of fish, crabs, shrimp, and eels swarm to the surface and make towards the water’s edge. 

While there hasn’t been a Jubilee in a long time now, the few documented photos of the event are something to behold. Let’s just say I wouldn’t want to be swimming in the bay when this happened.  

With over 50 shops to browse, it’s easy to spend a day in Fairhope searching for a one-of-a-kind antique, updating your wardrobe, browsing used books at The Book Inn, or picking up the latest bestsellers at Page & Palette, which incidentally is also a fantastic place to enjoy a cup of coffee in their cafe Latte Da or imbibe with a cocktail in their bar and event venue, the Book Cellar.

Like The Happy Olive , many of the shops offer complimentary tastings of their products, so you’re not investing in a bottle of something you only think you’ll like based on the description. 

As an added bonus, since the shops are all located in the heart of downtown Fairhope, it’s easy to walk and discover each store as you weave back and forth along the flat, brick-paved sidewalks. 

Lunch Like a Local in Fairhope

If you want to eat lunch in downtown Fairhope, you have loads of options. It seems like there’s a restaurant or cafe every few feet. If you’re craving a burger in an atmospheric alleyway, check out “Locals at the Alley.” Even if you don’t choose to eat here, do walk through the alley because it’s just that lovely––a romantic hideaway in the shade of the buildings with stairways leading who knows where. 

For a quick, super casual bite, visit the “Bay Breeze Cafe,” where you can try their signature Tomato Bisque topped with bleu cheese with a savory sandwich.

From creole Cajun vibes at “R Bistro & Pastry ” to Lebanese food at “Sage,” Fairhope has a bite to fit whatever you’re craving for lunch. 

Located 1.4 miles from the heart of downtown Fairhope, dining at The Hope Farm is truly a can’t-miss experience. I’m coming back to Fairhope just so I can eat here again.

The Hope Farm is a beautifully designed, sprawling restaurant and event venue, offering the freshest ingredients grown locally in their own gardens, all pesticide-free.  Even the cocktails are what they describe as Farm-to-Glass. 

And as good as those cocktails are, the farm-fresh food is the shining star of The Hope Farm. 

The Hope Farm menu changes regularly based on seasonal ingredients, which is the way it should be.

So, depending on the time of year, you might be getting completely different offerings than what I was able to order, but if they happen to have the Warm Mushroom Salad with Strawberries , don’t hesitate to order it.

It was so good, that I tried to recreate it as soon as I got home, and I’m happy to report I was pleased with the result! Click here for the recipe. 

The Hope Farm also serves up a Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, so if you’re in Fairhope for the weekend, save room for a Croque Madame or a Vegetable Frittata . 

If you have a sweet tooth or need a sugar rush while exploring Fairhope, then one decadent option is “The Yard Milkshake Bar,” where the elaborate milkshake concoctions are the stuff of candy-colored dreams. The menu is a little daunting, so take your time choosing. You’re going to need plenty of time to actually eat the pint or quart-sized milkshake concoction. 

Mr. Gene’s Beans has been a Fairhope fixture for sweet treats and coffee for over 25 years now. It’s a friendly, casual spot to cool your heels and indulge in the Fairhope Float or gourmet popcorn. While they don’t have an official website, follow them on Facebook or Instagram for the latest offerings and happenings at Mr. Gene’s Beans. 

Tongue & Groove Drinkery

If you’re looking for an upscale yet laid-back speakeasy-style bar, then take a stroll to Tongue & Groove Drinkery , where the cocktails are crafted with care with fresh ingredients and change seasonally. 

They also serve beer and wine if fancy cocktails aren’t your style. Closed Monday & Tuesday, the bar gets in gear Wednesday – Sunday beginning at 4:00 and closing at midnight. For up-to-date happenings at Tongue & Groove, check out the Tongue & Groove Drinkery website, or their Facebook and Instagram pages. 

Fairhope Brewing Company

With a large taproom for tastings or just a casual spot to enjoy a pint, Fairhope Brewing Company is a community hub offering locally made brews from around the state of Alabama. 

Food isn’t served here, but they allow you to “BYOF” (bring your own food). Conveniently located across the street from The Hope Farm, my suggestion is to enjoy a meal there and then walk across the street to sample a brew. 

The Grand Hotel | Why You’ll Love a Stay at this Point Clear Resort

Fairhope has its fair share of Bed & Breakfasts and Inns to choose from if you want to stay within walking distance of the town, but my suggestion is to book a stay at Point Clear’s historic and sprawling resort––The Grand Hotel . 

The Grand Hotel & Resort recently underwent a $35 million renovation which tastefully updated the rooms and revitalized the restaurant and common areas of the resort while still maintaining the roots of its original charm. 

During my stay here, I enjoyed a suite with a balcony in the Spa Tower overlooking the peaceful marina. Though the Spa Tower is located at the far end of the resort, one of my favorite aspects of my stay here was the easy access to the paved perimeter walking pathway that surrounds and connects the resort together.

The Grand Hotel & Resort opened its doors in 1847, and over the years, eventually became known as the “Queen of Southern Resorts.” It has endured fires and weathered hurricanes, but the resort has rebuilt and renewed no matter the catastrophe. 

During WWII, the hotel was even used as a training base for the Army Air Corps, but even they paid their respects by not wearing combat boots in the dining room to avoid scuffing the pristine hardwood floors. 

A walk through the circular lobby with its eye-catching stone fireplace reveals much about the hotel’s history and the area through the fascinating photos on the walls. 

Joining 10 other locations for a total of 24 courses, the Lakewood Club is a proud member of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

The club offers two courses, the Dogwood and the Azalea , that have undergone recent transformations to improve their original designs. 

Fine Dining | Southern Roots

If I had to choose a favorite dining experience at the resort, my evening spent enjoying Southern Roots’ savory entrees is the clear winner. Delicious. 

The menu centers on locally sourced ingredients, with many of the rest vegetables and herbs being grown in the large garden just outside the restaurant.  

The restaurant itself is picturesque in its circular design, with delicate gold leaves dangling above with views to the lawn and bay beyond. 

Reservations are recommended. 

Casual Dining | Bucky’s Lounge

Bucky’s Lounge is a relaxed spot to unwind and enjoy various food options ranging from a farm-fresh fruit and cheese plate to a hearty Grouper Reuben Sandwich with fries . The evenings are lively, with local musicians providing classic tunes on the large grand piano.

If the music gets a little too loud, spill outside onto the wide green space filled with flickering fire pits and cushioned chairs. However, if you want to catch the sunset from one of those fire pit tables, claim your spot early because they fill up fast. 

If the resort gets too crowded or you simply want to try a standalone Point Clear restaurant, then take a look at The Wash House which melds a rustic feel with elegant touches. 

Most resorts have a pool, but not quite like this one at The Grand. Living up to the name, this pool is truly grand, featuring waterfalls, slides, a splash pad, and an adults-only swimming pool complete with water spouts. 

Even on a crowded weekend, there’s still plenty of room for everyone; however, if you want ultra privacy plus luxury, take the plunge and rent a private cabana for the day where you can relax in ultimate comfort. The wait staff is attentive as well, offering specialty beverages and food from the Jubilee Poolside Grill. 

Additional Resort Activities

In addition to the amazing pool, the Grand Hotel and Resort offers a load of other free activities for guests. With every day offering a slightly different event schedule, staying here almost feels like the guests have a cruise director enhancing the stay. 

One of my favorite mornings I spent participating in the free yoga class on the green space at The Point, where cool morning breezes blew in off the bay while the instructor guided us through a gentle yet challenging enough class over the course of the hour. 

At sunset, it’s fun to walk to the pier where kids (and grownups) can make use of the free fishing poles and try their hand at catching a fish. It’s also an excellent spot for watching Great Blue Herons, who also enjoy fishing off the pier. 

Swings and hammocks are spaced along the walking pathways for when you want to pause and enjoy the view or rest your feet. 

While it’s easy to get caught up in all the activities offered here, don’t forget to take a stroll through their gardens that circle the lily pond. The trees and flowering plants are labeled so you can learn about the diversity of the plant life cultivated here. Plus, it’s an ideal space to capture a few memorable photos of your stay.

Whether you’re visiting Fairhope and neighboring Point Clear for business or pleasure, I’m fairly confident you’re going to enjoy your stay, and I hope this guide helps to enhance your experience all the more.

#4 Beach Rd Fairhope, AL

Located on Mobile Bay, at the west end of Fairhope Avenue, on the site on the city’s original commercial pier (dating back from 1894), the Fairhope Pier is our city’s ‘town square’. Destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the 1448 foot pier was rebuilt and reopened in November 2006. Designed for both strolling and fishing, the pier features benches, covered areas, restrooms, a marina and a restaurant. There is no cost to walk, but a saltwater license is required for fishing. The park is home to a lovely rose garden and fountain, plus picnic tables, pavilion, duck pond, tree trail, and a large sandy beach. Non-residents are charged park admission during the summer season. In addition to the waterfront park, numerous bluff top parks extend along the bay front.

Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) is the closest airport, which offers flights to Atlanta, Houston, Dallas and Charlotte. You can fly all around the world from any of those airports.

The airport is located just under an hour outside of the airport. You can pick up an Uber at the airport, get a taxi or rent a car.

When I first started researching the best things to do in Fairhope, Alabama, I kept seeing a Fairhope Float from Mr. Gene's Beans mentioned.

I knew one of the first things we needed to try was a Fairhope Float. I must say that all the research was right...a Fairhope Float is must try, especially if you love coffee drinks.

Mr. Gene's Beans is a local favorite with Ice Cream, gourmet popcorn, and a great coffee and tea menu.

Perfect for an iced coffee or a cold ice cream treat on a hot day or a hot mocha on one of our cooler days.

The gourmet popcorn makes a fantastic local Gulf Coast of Alabama gift for the holidays!

The perfect cute cafe to grab a snack, sweets, a cup of coffee, in the heart of Fairhope, Al. This popcorn shop has it all.

There is a cute seating area with table and chairs along with a few counter height stools.

Things to know when planning a visit to Mr Gene’s Beans

Hours - 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM most days except Sunday when there are shorter hours of 12 pm to 6 pm.

Please confirm with the restaurant to ensure that hours have not changed.

Accessibility - There is a ramp leading up into the ice cream shop. Inside the shop it could get a little tight depending on how many people are inside.

Plus Size Seating - The indoor chairs do not have arms on them.

Dress Code/Suggestions - Casual

Pets - Pets are not allowed inside the sweet shop.

Parking   - There is quick pick up parking right next to the ice cream shop. There is also parking along the street available on a first come first serve basis.

You may need to circle the block a few times to find parking or head to the public parking lot north of the Fairhope Community Park.

The First Wawa In Alabama Will Be Opening In April

The beloved convenience store-gas station will lay roots in Fairhope.

If you’ve ever driven through the Mid-Atlantic, you’ve likely come across Wawa : a gas station-convenience store with a following nearly as passionate as Southerners who love Buc-ee’s . Not only does Wawa sell gas—the chain has made-to-order dinner items, custom hoagies, breakfast sandwiches, an expansive drink selection, freshly brewed coffee, milkshakes, and more. They’re even serving up a BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger !

Now, the Yellowhammer state will be joining Wawa’s fleet of nearly 1,000 locations in the United States.

Wawa just announced plans to open their very first Alabama store in Fairhope on April 25, 2024. The store will be located at 18968 Greeno Road (Baldwin County) and, in true Wawa style, will have a spectacular grand opening: a ribbon cutting, the announcement of community partnerships, support for local organizations, celebration of local heroes through Wawa’s signature “Hoagies for Heroes” initiative, and all kinds of festivities.

“We can’t wait to open our doors to our new Alabama friends and neighbors and are excited for the chance to offer our new customers our unique brand of fresh food, beverages, and convenience,” said Robert Yeatts, Sr. Director of Store Operations. “As each location opens, we will further solidify our commitment to providing the community with not only a new level of convenience but a strong, committed community partner.”

In addition to the brand-new store in Fairhope, Wawa will also be opening a store in Mobile and Robertsdale this summer (dates are yet to be announced). Wawa plans to open seven to ten stores in the Baldwin County and Mobile regions in the next three to four years, each employing an average of 35 workers, the company announced in a release. This expansion will create hundreds of long-term jobs for local Alabamians.

Though Wawa would be hard-pressed to surpass our love of Buc-ee’s or Love’s Travel Stops , we’re excited to enjoy all of their fan-favorite items on our visits to Fairhope. You can’t go wrong with the beauty on the bay !
