You’re also only a few miles from the Tampa airport and the nearby Tampa International Mall. There, your options for shopping and dining multiply exponentially.

Once you get to Tampa there are countless tourist destinations within a short drive of the downtown area; Hard Rock Casino and Resort is just a few exits east on I-4, while Busch Gardens Tampa is also nearby. The doors to the 670,000-square-foot AMALIE Arena (originally called the Ice Palace) first opened on October 12, 1996 with its first event, the Royal Hanneford Circus. The Circus was followed shortly thereafter by the first Lightning game played on October 20, 1996. The Lightning won 5-2 over the New York Rangers.

The arena has hosted numerous high-profile events including the 1999 NHL All-Star Game, the 2007 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2008 NCAA Women’s Final Four, the 2009 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2012 Republican National Convention, the 2012 NCAA Men's Frozen Four and more.

In 2002, the building was renamed from the Ice Palace to the St. Pete Times Forum as part of a new partnership with the St. Petersburg Times.

From 2011-2013, the publicly-owned AMALIE Arena underwent a $62 million transformation that was privately funded by Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment owner and chairman, Jeff Vinik.

On December 31, 2011 the St. Petersburg Times changed its name to the Tampa Bay Times, and the arena was unveiled as the Tampa Bay Times Forum to follow suit.

In August 2014, local Tampa Bay Company AMALIE Oil entered an agreement for the naming rights to the arena.

Ford Thunder Alley

Ford Thunder Alley is AMALIE Arena's main entrance plaza that gives fans a place to meet, gather and relax before the game. Lexus Suite Level

Each of the building’s 69 suites have been completely reconstructed and finished with the most modern materials and technologies. With 20 suites less than 25 rows from the main floor, luxury seating options are in abundance for the most discriminating sports and entertainment fans.

Each of the suites have been enlarged with slick cool-to-touch in-counter stove burners and flat-screen TVs.

Smoother Surfaces

Over 75,000 square feet covering the arena’s concourses, Promenade and Trane Terrace level have been resurfaced and sealed.

Brighter Lights

Two hundred forty-two new sport lights have been installed to increase our game night lighting by doubling our foot-candle levels, exceeding all NHL standards and enhancing HD broadcasts for all events.

The Budweiser Biergarten located on the trane terrace level offers 10,000 square feet of gorgeous, unobstructed views of downtown Tampa. In addition to the views, the deck has five concession stands and beverage bars with 10 new points of sale available to all arena guests.

To help enlarge our Executive Suites, 72 restrooms have been removed and replaced with eight exclusive hallway restrooms.

Seven motorized Mac 3 theatrical lights bring a premier feel to every event.

New Digital Signs

New Daktronics LED digital signs with 360-degree views. A total of 14 new LED displays offer up 1.7 million square pixels for pure viewing pleasure.

Upgraded Cuisine

The AMALIE Arena main restaurants have been transformed into one grand 9,000-square-foot dining experience called The Firestick Grill. The kitchen was replaced with four ovens, one broiler, 10 prep stations, three refrigerators, and a 320-square-foot freezer. Open for every Lightning game and on select event nights, enjoy our newest premium experience Interact Bistro @ Firestick Grill.

Powered by the People

Approximately 1,250 men and women worked non-stop on the arena transformation over four months. That’s over 175,000 hours on the job site. A total of 35 contractors have been utilized on-site at AMALIE Arena. 85 percent of the costs for the transformation has been paid to Florida firms for labor or products also supplied by Florida firms.

The $62 million in renovations to the publicly owned AMALIE Arena were privately funded. No financial burden was placed on the community.

Tropicana Field, commonly known as “The Trop,” is located in the heart of St. Petersburg, Florida, and is home to MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays. It is one of the most uniquely-designed stadiums in Major League Baseball, as the catwalks on the ceiling can actually come into play during a game. The stadium has been around longer than the Tampa Bay Rays. It has served the St. Petersburg/Tampa area since 1990 — eight years before the Rays played their first game.

Tropicana Field History

Tropicana Field was built between 1986 and 1990 and opened originally as the Florida Suncoast Dome. It has a recognizable slanted roof that was made to reduce cooling costs and help the structure remain safe in the case of a hurricane. The roof is not retractable, making it the only stadium in the league with a fixed roof. The interior concourse design was fashioned after the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Ebbets Field. The Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League were the original tenants of the stadium and hosted games there from 1991 to 1996. It was also the original home of the Tampa Bay Lightning when they became an NHL franchise in 1993. The arena was then renamed to the ThunderDome while the Lightning called it home from 1993 to 1996. Tampa Bay was awarded an MLB franchise in 1995 and it was renamed Tropicana Field in 1996. The Lightning and Storm moved to downtown Tampa and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays became the tenants of the stadium.

Tropicana Field had a $70 million renovation done ahead of the 1998 debut season for the Devil Rays. The stadium has undergone multiple renovations over the years, including investing around $37 million since 2005 to make the food, beverage, and dining experiences better and providing updates to amenities throughout the ballpark, such as the new Team Store and Rays Brewhouse. The Rays have made it easier for fans to walk around the lower concourse by adding 360-degree circulation in 2013.

There have been plenty of other events held at Tropicana Field. It hosted the 1999 NCAA Final Four, an NCAA football bowl game from 2008 – 2017, and WWE utilized it for 2020 and 2021 to film many of its events during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also been used for concerts, including ones by Billy Joel, Sha Na Na, Rush, Guns N’ Roses, and more.

Parking and Admission at Tropicana Field

There are four general parking lots surrounding Tropicana Field and two premium parking lots. Lots 1 and 7 offer handicapped parking while Lots 1, 2, 5, and 6 offer prepaid parking that can be purchased until six hours before first pitch. For overflow parking, you can choose other lots or garages in downtown St. Petersburg. For those that want to take public transportation to the game, the SunRunner stops on the north side of Tropicana Field and runs every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and every 30 minutes from 8 p.m. to midnight. You can also opt for the Baseball Looper Trolley, which runs from two stops downtown to the stadium and is free. It starts 90 minutes before a game starts and runs every 10 minutes until an hour after a game ends.

Backpacks, coolers, and bags larger than 16” x 8” are not allowed in the stadium. Alcohol, weapons, lasers, bullhorns, cameras with lenses longer than 12”, and footwear with wheels are also prohibited.

Tropicana Field Capacity & Seating Options

Tropicana Field capacity is the smallest in MLB at 25,000 when the 300 level of the stadium is closed off by tarps, which is what the Rays began doing during the 2019 season. For seating options, there are plenty all around the ballpark on multiple levels. Sections 141 and 143 in left field are Randy Land, for left fielder Randy Arozarena. Every Friday home game, those tickets start at $56 and include a T-shirt.

The only section that doesn’t offer ticketed seating is the Budweiser Porch out in center field.

There are a variety of suite options located throughout Tropicana Field, including Outfield Suites, Infield Suites, and Executive Suites, as well as singular suites like the Legends of Tampa Bay Suite, Hooters Owl Den Suite, and more. These suites include VIP parking passes, up to 48 tickets, a flat screen TV,  and more. There are also two unique spots down the left field line, the Left Field Ledge and Patio Boxes, that offer complimentary snacks and beverages with purchase of seating in those areas.

Food & Beverage Options at Tropicana Field

There are food halls on the first and third base sides at Tropicana Field with a variety of stands. You can find typical ballpark food such as pretzels, Cracker Jacks, hot dogs, French Fries, and more at almost any stand in the park. A unique option is Crabby’s Beachside Bites, which offers meals like calamari, grouper cheek sliders, boneless tender baskets, and more. There are also many stands at the Budweiser Porch that serve all kinds of food, beers, cocktails, and more.

4 factors going into Lightning’s game against Bruins

T AMPA — The Lightning returned from the West Coast as one of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference, and they’ve needed to be in order to take control of the conference’s first wild-card playoff spot.

With 11 games left in the regular season, they entered Tuesday with a six-point lead over the Capitals for the first wild-card spot. They also trailed the Maple Leafs by four points for third place in the Atlantic Division. Both Toronto and Washington played Tuesday, with the Capitals hosting the Red Wings (who sit one point back of Washington), so one of those teams will gain ground on idle Tampa Bay.

By going 4-0-1 on their five-game trip, the Lightning gave themselves better control of their fate. By Wednesday morning, the teams chasing them will no longer have games in hand.

But the schedule doesn’t get any easier, as the next week includes home games against the Bruins, Islanders and Red Wings — each with a lot to play for.

Boston is battling for an Atlantic Division title (the winner of Tuesday’s game at Florida would take a two-point lead) but went to Sunrise coming off back-to-back regulation losses for the first time in three months.

The Bruins have been a measuring stick for the Lightning, and this season some of Tampa Bay’s most inspired wins and most lackadaisical losses have come against Boston.

When they meet for the final time in the regular season Wednesday at Amalie Arena, it will be simpler: Both teams want points.

Here are four things to watch for in the matchup.

Keeping the PK going

Over their last nine games, the Lightning’s penalty kill is 29-for-30 for a jaw-dropping 96.7% success rate.

Tampa Bay would prefer to take fewer penalties, but the consistent play of its PK has given it a momentum boost. The Lightning are 7-1-1 during that stretch.

Meanwhile, the Bruins entered Tuesday struggling on the power play, going just 3-for-16 (18.9%) over their previous six games. In the four games it didn’t score a man-advantage goal, Boston had two goals or fewer.

The Lightning’s recent strong penalty-kill play has improved its season rank to sixth in the NHL (82.4%). With its top-ranked power-play (29.0%), Tampa Bay is one of just three teams to have both special teams units among the top six (joining Carolina and the Rangers) in the league.

Building on home ice

The Lightning’s recent success on the road is encouraging, given how much they’ve struggled away from Amalie Arena dating back to last season. You have to win on the road to advance in the postseason.

Now, they have to build on some recent momentum at home. Before their most recent road trip, the Lightning won back-to-back home games over the Flyers and Rangers by a combined score of 13-3. Against Philadelphia, Tampa Bay went up 4-0 early and cruised. But against the Rangers, they trailed by two goals 17 minutes into the game before rallying to score six of the next seven.

Before those back-to-back wins, the Lightning were just 1-4-1 in their previous six games at Amalie Arena.

Get back the big guns

The Lightning ended their road trip with a 3-2 overtime win in Anaheim without top defenseman Victor Hedman and top center Brayden Point, who sat out with lower-body injuries.

Both are expected to play against the Bruins, and they’ll be needed. Hedman has been playing huge minutes on all three units. He is averaging a team-high 25:05 in ice time over his last eight games, third-highest among all NHL players during that stretch.

Point has been the Lightning’s top goal-scorer. His 10 goals in eight games dating back to March 2 are tied for second-most in the league. They include a hat trick and six-point game against the Rangers in the Lightning’s last home game on March 14.

What’s more overtime?

Two of the three previous meetings between the Lightning and Bruins have gone to overtime, with Tampa Bay winning both. Boston has had 23 games end in overtime (or a shootout) and has lost 15.

Brandon Hagel’s 3-on-3 winner in a 5-4 victory on Nov. 20 snapped the Lightning’s four-game overtime losing streak to start the season. Then, after Tampa Bay blew an early two-goal lead on Feb. 13, Point netted the only goal in a 3-2 shootout victory.

If Wednesday’s game goes to overtime, it will be the Lightning’s third straight. They lost to the Kings in OT on Saturday before beating the Ducks Sunday on Anthony Cirelli’s winner in the extra session.
