10 exciting in-person and virtual STEM field trips

Engaging stem field trips help students link classroom learning to real-world possibilities.

STEM field trips are no longer limited to traditional science centers–today’s STEM trips are interactive, engaging, and bring classroom concepts to life for students.

Every student loves a field trip, and with a little planning, it can be mostly fun and low-stress for teachers and chaperones.

One of the best things about a STEM field trip is that it gives students a chance to apply their classroom learning to a real-life situation. This kind of engagement helps students see how professionals use STEM each day, and it also prompts them to consider STEM for their own future.

While in-person field trips are exciting, they’re not always feasible for schools with funding or geographic challenges. In those cases, virtual STEM field trips might be the best option.

We’ve put together a list of in-person and virtual STEM field trips to get you thinking about where your next trip might take your students.

1. Sports games offer a fun and engaging way to challenge students to use STEM concepts they’ve learned in class. Many minor-league baseball teams offer STEM days for students at all grade levels, featuring simple concepts and demonstrations for younger students and more complicated challenges for older students. Check out the nonprofit Science of Sport to get started.

2. If you’re near an iFLY indoor skydiving center , a field trip is a great way to illustrate STEM learning. iFLY’s STEM program uses a vertical wind tunnel to inspire and educate students through an interactive presentation, demos in the wind tunnel, and grade-appropriate lab activities.

3. Roller rinks double as a great throwback to your younger days and as a fun STEM activity, covering topics such as friction, physics, design, and engineering. Here’s an intro from the Roller Skating Association International , and don’t forget to check out your area’s local roller skating rinks.

4. If you want to learn or brush up on some basics, check out this Microsoft Education crash course on using Skype for virtual field trips.

5. EarthEcho features a wide variety of virtual STEM field trips, including topics on water and sustainable futures, how one female biologist forged her career path, and engineering and its contributions to everyday life.

6. Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants hosts 20+ Google Hangout events for classrooms each month. Full day, week-long, and month-long events focus on oceans, biodiversity, women in science, space exploration, and more.

7. Discovery Education’s STEM field trips  let students examine the annual polar bear migration on the tundra, investigate real-life STEM professionals and what a day on the job entails, take a peek at a space center, and more.

8. These three science and nature virtual field trips take students across the globe as they tackle climate change, ecotourism, combating desertification, and different ecosystems.

9. With a Navy STEM virtual field trip, students will hear personal stories from service members and learn about how STEM takes these professionals from an F-18 to the flight deck control on an aircraft carrier.

10. Local science centers and science exploration zones shouldn’t be overlooked–many of them have updated their field trip curriculum to be more modern, relevant, and engaging for students.

Retreats are available for environmental education, team building, and recreation. We created field trip lesson plans to help teachers, scout leaders, camp counselors, and homeschool parents provide an enriching experience for their groups. We know funds for class trips are limited, so we’ve included grants for field trips that cover admission, transportation, and more. It’s important that students and youth explore new environments, learn about other cultures, and develop an understanding of inclusivity as part of the educational process. People learn in different ways—through hearing, seeing, touching, talking, or doing. Class trips can provide a multi-dimensional learning experience. FieldTripDirectory.com can help you find the right trip for your group. A world of experiences is just a click away at FieldTripDirectory.com.

Our reservations office is currently receiving an extremely high volume of reservation requests .

While our team is dedicated to addressing all reservations as quickly as possible, we often receive reservation requests faster than we can address them within the first month of the school year. Please allow 5-10 business days before our team is able to review and respond to your request. We appreciate your patience while we work through our backlog of waitlisted summer reservation requests and address newly received requests in the order in which they were received.

Questions? Check out the Field Trip FAQs .

Field Trip Pricing Eligibility The above pricing is applicable to eligible public, charter, private, and home schools only. Non public schools (private schools and home schools) must be actively registered with the NC Division of Non Public Education and be listed on the appropriate directory of private schools or home schools available from their website. Private or home schools not registered with the NC Division of Non Public Education are not eligible for the above rates and may book reservations for these programs at the group rates listed on our Group Visits page.

Field Trip Minimums Field trip reservations have at least 10 guests to book a visit. Some programs, such as Enrichment Experiences, and Launch Lab classes may require at least 10 student-age guests for the program’s activities, and may not be available for groups with less than 10 students.

* Tax A tax of 7.5% for state and local sales & use for admissions is applicable to all tickets.

Please request a reservation for your school of 10 or more people using the Request a Reservation button on this page.

Reservations must be requested and confirmed as far in advance as possible, and no less than 2 weeks in advance. We are unable to accommodate reservation requests less than two weeks in advance.

From September through May, the weekday program schedule is not pre-determined, and schools are welcome to choose their programs as availability permits. Reservations for this period typically open in early summer.

During the summer (June through August) weekday programs are pre-scheduled, and groups may choose from shows on the pre-set schedule. Reservations for summer typically open in mid to late spring.

After we receive your request, Morehead’s reservations team will contact you to discuss your reservation options and help complete your reservation within a few business days. During high-volume months (August – early October and January-February), the reservations team may take up to a week to reply to new reservation requests.

Please email our reservations team at [email protected] call our Reservations Team at 919.843.7993 if you need additional assistance.

  • Balances for reservations are due by 5 p.m. on or before 3 business days prior to the visit date.
  • Payments are accepted by VISA/Discover/MasterCard, or by business check (no personal checks).
  • North Carolina public schools (K-12, charter, and college/universities), NC state agencies, and/or local NC county agencies such as school districts, libraries, etc. may receive net-30 payment terms upon request. Contact our Reservations Team  with questions.
  • Every student and adult (educators, parents and bus drivers) in your group requires admission, and must be counted in your group reservation numbers.
  • Children or adults who have a Morehead membership cannot use their member benefits for admission during a school field trip or other group visit.
  • Payments must be lump sum. Individual guests may not pay separately.

Private Planetarium Shows*

  • Students/Children: $9.95
  • Adults: $10.95
  • Minimum charge of $500 must be met for any private show reservation.
  • Tax of 7.5% is applicable to private shows.

*Only available after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, and non business hours on weekends

Morehead has a limited capacity to accommodate schools and non-school groups on weekends due to differences in operations on weekends vs. weekdays. Both schools and non-school groups are able to book reservations on weekends with the following limitations:

  • A limited number of tickets in each weekend show are available for purchase by schools or non-school groups. Remaining tickets are not available for schools or non-school groups and are only available to the general public once tickets are on-sale starting 2 weeks prior. Max tickets available for group sales to any one Planetarium Show is 50 total. Tickets to science stage programs are not reservable on weekends. Seating is first-come, first-serve for groups and the general public to those programs.
  • Weekend reservations cannot be scheduled less than 2 weeks prior to the visit. Groups wishing to visit in less than 2 weeks may purchase tickets online at the general public rate. Group and school rate discounts are not available less than 2 weeks in advance.
  • Weekend reservations must be paid for at the time tickets are reserved. Schools and universities (public, charter, and private schools) are eligible to hold reservations without payment up to 2 weeks prior to the show, but payment must be made 2 weeks in advance. Ticket sales are final and are non-refundable.
  • Weekend groups travelling in buses or oversize vehicles may drop off in the parking lot, but must park elsewhere and return later to pick groups up after their visit. Buses and large vehicles may not park in the lot.
  • Similar to weekday programs, weekend shows and programs start promptly on-time. We are unable to late-seat large groups once the show has begun since this would disrupt the show. Morehead does not offer refunds for late groups, but you may reschedule your group to a later show that day if availability permits.
  • Morehead reserves the right to limit availability for school and non-school group reservations on certain weekends throughout the year due to impacts on operations that further limit our ability to support large groups of visitors on those days.

For field trip reservations, it is Morehead’s policy to communicate directly with the school or group visiting in addition to the third party or charter operator. Please include the name of the school and a contact person at the school who we can copy on all email communications.

If a third party arranges a field trip visit, they are financially responsible for the visit, and payment is required two weeks in advance of the visit. “Third party” is defined as a company, organization or individual (charter operator, travel agent, etc.) who is not an employee of the school or group.

Through the generous gifts of many donors, Morehead is able to offer field trip subsidies, or scholarships, to schools meeting certain criteria.

If you would like to request a scholarship for your reservation, you will be able to do so when you make your online request. If you have already booked a reservation and would like to be considered for a scholarship, contact our reservations office at 919.843.7993 or by email at [email protected] .

The priority deadline for scholarship requests is the second Sunday in September. Requests received by this date will initially be added to the scholarship waitlist, and these requests will be evaluated early in that week. Schools that had requested scholarship funding by that date will be notified ASAP of their new scholarship status once their request has been evaluated.

Requests received after the second Sunday in September will be evaluated on a first-come, first-serve basis, and awarded scholarships as long as funding is available.

Morehead does not coordinate lunch orders as an add-on for field trip groups; however, schools are welcome to place catered lunch orders with area vendors. If you plan to have lunch delivered, please inform our reservations team prior to your visit.

Please remember that Morehead does not have an indoor space for groups to eat lunch. There is a small picnic table area behind the planetarium with a tent cover that can seat ~30/40 students. Otherwise, there are plenty of open lawns nearby the planetarium for a picnic style lunch.

In the event of poor weather, other than the tented picnic tables and a small covered patio in front of the building, there are no nearby spaces to eat lunch, and Morehead recommends eating lunch on the bus or on the way back to your school.

The parking lot in front of Morehead Planetarium & Science Center is owned and operated by UNC Chapel Hill, and is not available for parking buses or oversize vehicles. Buses and large vehicles are able to pull into the parking lot and drop off guests, but must park off site.

UNC Chapel Hill has designated a limited amount of space along Skipper Bowles Drive on south campus for bus parking on weekdays in the morning and early afternoons. This parking is located along Skipper Bowles Drive in the right-most travel lane between Kenan Drive and Tar Heel Boulevard/Carolina Basketball Museum in front of the Dean E Smith Center. Buses may not block driveways/vehicle entrances, crosswalks, or the Chapel Hill Transit bus stop in front of the Smith Center. Printable directions to this parking area are available here , and available as a google maps link here .

Otherwise, buses may elect to park elsewhere in Chapel Hill while waiting to pick up their group. Morehead recommends buses park off-site at New Hope Commons shopping center, about 5 miles off campus. You can find directions to the shopping center from Morehead here . It’s located directly down Franklin Street and Hwy 15/501, just past the intersection with Interstate 40.

University Place Mall is NOT available for bus parking. Due to ongoing construction and future impacts on parking lot configuration, University Place Mall will no longer be a suitable off-campus location for buses and oversize vehicles to park.

Please see information about public parking on our Plan A Visit page. The lot in front of Morehead is managed by UNC as a campus-wide parking lot, and spaces are often limited or unavailable. Guests arriving in separate vehicles should plan to arrive early in case the lot is full to allow time to find parking along the street or in nearby town lots.

Field Trips

Two girls look through microscopes.

A field trip to Pacific Science Center is a time-honored tradition for students of all ages across Washington state. Our hands-on exhibits, shows, and innovative programs ignite students’ curiosity for science in a day of exploration to enhance your curriculum and spark a lifelong interest in science, technology, engineering, and math.

ELIGIBILITY

Visiting parties that fit into one or more of the following categories—academic and childcare institutions, including public and private schools, homeschools, daycares, or community organizations—may be eligible for our field trip rates. Eligible parties must adhere to the registration guidelines found at the bottom of this page.

If your group does not qualify for a field trip rate, you may be eligible for our group visit rate. For more information, visit our Group Sales webpage . If you’re looking for a private rental of our facilities, visit our Venue Experiences webpage .

Below is a pricing table for our field trip rates. Qualified low-income schools may receive up to 100% off field trip rates. Typically, schools with 40% of the student body or higher receiving free and reduced lunch qualify for financial aid. Eligibility is checked by our team when you reserve your visit. To learn more, please email School Groups .

Add-on Experiences

In addition to General Admission, PacSci offers extra experiences to enhance your learning and support your curriculum, including:

  • Documentary IMAX Movies : During the school year, we offer Teacher’s Choice where teachers can book one of two open documentary slots, if your school is the first to book. Email our School Groups team for a complete list of documentaries.
  • Daytime Laser Show : Be dazzled by a Daytime Laser Show in our Laser Dome. Packed with 10,000 watts of concert sound, experience a one-of-a-kind show on one of the largest geocentric domes dedicated to lasers!
  • Planetarium Show : Enjoy a live, immersive presentation in the Willard Smith Planetarium. Blast off to the universe’s outer reaches or explore the planets in our solar system. There is always something different to experience! Seating is limited to 36 students and four chaperones (or any combination of the two with a maximum of 40 participants. Chaperone ratios must be observed). Limited showings are available.

Paired Digital Discovery Workshop

Deep the impact of your students’ Field Trip experience by participating in a live, 40-minute digital workshop in the days before or after your PacSci visit.

Focusing on cross-cutting concepts and science and engineering practices, this virtual program primes learners to get the most out of their PacSci Field Trip:

The Art of Observation

Hone your observation and inference-making skills by sketching like a scientist. Learn how to use art to slow down and notice more about biological structures, then make predictions about their possible functions. Examine butterfly specimens from our Tropical Butterfly House and take a deep dive into a flower dissection as you refine your scientific observation skills in connection with your PacSci Field Trip. (Grades K-8; content adapted to fit participant age)

These programs can be delivered to up to 50 students at a time with as many workshops as needed to reach every participating student. Digital Discovery Workshops start at $200 with discounts for booking three or more programs. Qualified low-income schools may receive up to 100% off.

Learn more about Digital Discovery Workshops and indicate in your Field Trip Reservation form if you are interested in this add-on.
