5 Island Tour of Mauritius with iLe Aux Cerfs Watersports

We’ve all seen the screensavers. Crystal blue beaches, crisp white sand, snorkeling with tropical fish. It’s what Microsoft deems we need whenever we log in for the day. Once you see it in real life, you’ll realise they’re right! Soft, powdery beachy truly are paradise.

We got a taster of this beautiful life when hosted hosted on a 5 island tour with iLe Aux Cerfs Watersports,  while visiting Mauritius last summer – courtesy of the LUX Grand Gaube .

Unfortunately, there had been a miscommunication as the hotel as were were informed we were going on a catamaran cruise so we dressed for a hard deck, garden party type even where we expected to cruise and drink bubbly.

When we arrived, we waited in (what seemed a very informal office for a catamaran company) beach office, until we would board the catamaran.

Twenty minutes later we were chaperoned through the water and onto a speed boat by tour guides, David and Jarryd. Oh boy! Garden party outfits, no towels, no sunblock…clearly we were in for a ride.

Never people to miss an unexpected opportunity, we took off our shoes (actually they asked for them and we had to put them in a laundry basket) and geared up for the day.

As it turned out, we were taken on a 5 island tour of Mauritius, which turned out to be spectacular. Here’s what it included:

5 Island Tour of Mauritius with Snorkeling

Island 1 – ilot marianne nature reserve.

Our first port of call was a whistle tour stop of Marianne Nature Reserve, filled with dark volcanic rock and a shallow beach for easy access. The shallow water allows you to see fish darting by as the boat floats past. (Enjoy me, bottom left, making my way through the water in expense sandals and a nude dress to the island! )

Island 2 – Ile Aux Fouquest, Ile Phare

The Flouquest islands or Ile Phare (Lighthouse Island) is the first, large island we visited on our excursion. The island is parked between a large lagoon and the big, Indian ocean. Entry point is on the lagoon edge and is totally safe to visit.

A lighthouse built in 1864, which operated for 200 years, is the main feature and presents a glimpse into the past with views towards the mainland.

It was the first island that the Dutch discovered in 1598. Now in ruins, it offers some beautiful views back towards mainland Mauritius and across the ocean.

Island 3 – Pit Stop at the Ship Wreck of Pointe D’Esny

At the edge of the calm waters is the Dalblair shipwreck at  Pointe D’Esny , laying just off the reef. The ship sailed from Scotland in 1895, en route to Mauritius, and got stuck in bad weather (same ship, different day!). The old rusty bow protrudes from the calm waters as tide crashes beyond, a reminder of treacherous waves of years gone by.

Island 4 – Île Aux Aigrettes

The iLe Aux Aigrettes is an exquisite speck of land. Guests are not allowed to explore the island, without permission from the government, as it is a precious nature reserve used for scientific research.

Visitors are, however, able to alight here for a lovely swim. Our hosts were also gracious enough to offer soft drinks or Mauritian rum. Again, when in Rome! I gladly accepted a plastic cup of rum and had a good float around.

The hosts had a good time dancing around and enticing European visitors to indulge in the island lifestyle, while floating in their water wings – hilarious! These colours are vibrant and magnificent.

Island 5 – Snorkeling

After relaxing in the lush waters of iLe Aux Aigrettes we moved onto our next stop, which focused on snorkeling – and where I began to roast like a lobster! Hint: the back of the legs were blood red!

I was told that Mauritius was no longer amazing when it came to sea life due to coral disintegration, but that is really saying something because I saw SO much and it was all incredible! It was so much fun swimming around in the shallow bay and seeing so many beautiful fish. It really made me respect the sea so much more.

Island 6 – Sega Dancing

Our final island stop treated us to some traditional sega dancing by young, Mauritian women and a casual meal of braai’d (BBQ) chicken, garlic bread and heart of palm salad. This was extremely rustic, but coming from South Africa – I was happy. Dessert was a bruleed green banana, which was delicious.

At the End of the Day

At this stage, we were so incredibly sunburnt that we were happy to make our way home. The last trip back was about 40 minutes and it was welcomed after all the sun, sea and sand.

Naturally, we hadn’t anticipated having to get off the boat (one doesn’t usually get off a catamaran!) and had no sunblock (luckily another couple did share some with us, but it wasn’t NEARLY enough). I was sunburnt for a week afterwards, which was really unpleasant.

In saying that, it was a phenomenal day out and we would highly recommend this adventure to anyone visiting the island.

Crew made us very welcome and lunch was tasty and there was plenty of it. Not a vast choice of drinks but enough to satisfy most. Waterfall is worth a look but we didn't rate the Ile aux Cerfs which is basically a barren island with a lot of coral on the beach and very shallow bathing. Beach shoes are essential. Only one bar and restaurant so thay can charge what they like as you are a captive audience. Oh, and we never did find the toilets! Our driver was late picking us up - he went to the wrong hotel - so we were worried that we might miss the boat, so we asked him to ring ahead to let them know we were coming. Our journey there was at speed but was more leisurely on the way back, so much so we fell asleep in the car! We give the driver a 5 euro tip which we though was reasonable bearing in mind he was late, and he looked less than impressed so wont give anything next time or will use a different transfer company. Our first stop will be at Ile aux Cerfs Island for a 45-Minutes visit and refreshments. We will then head to Grand River South East to enjoy the view of a waterfall that flows into the Indian Ocean. There you will have the opportunity to meet and feed our Wild Mauritian Monkeys. Next, we will go to Ile aux Phares, after which we will head to Blue Bay while passing by Ile de La Passe. Enjoy some unforgettable snorkeling session with our exotic tropical fishes in the Blue Bay Marine Park. After your visit to the Blue Bay Marine Park, we will pass by to Ile aux Aigrettes for some refreshments. The all-inclusive open bar is now open! Let’s now set pace back to Ile aux Cerfs while passing by Îlot Margenie. Enjoy a 2-hours relaxing time on the white sands of Ile aux Cerfs. During that time, you may take a swim and sunbathe while drinking some coconut water or enjoy your adrenaline watersports- parasailing and tube ride.  Your island’s recipe BBQ lunch is being prepared on the beach while your friendly barman will make you enjoy some Mauritian beer, wine or rum cocktails specially prepared for you on the all-inclusive open Bar. 5 Island tour with Chris and Kenny

Absolutely amazing trip!!!! Would highly recommend this excursion to anyone travelling to Mauritius. It was the highlight of our holiday. We had Kenny as a tour guide - what a legend!!!! Brilliant DJ on the boat and great fun. He has a great sense of humour and was a brilliant tour guide with interesting history and great banter - he can also spot a turtle and dolphins from 1km away! Out of interest we read the 1* reviews… what a load of sh*te… we totally disagree with everything that is said. Couldn’t recommend this more - we saw dolphins, turtles, fed the monkeys. Rum punch (locally known as coffee stops) was flowing and the beach bbq lunch was fantastic and very fresh. They even made a cake for a birthday boy we had on board!

I will recommend the 5 island day trip to each person visiting Mauritius!!! Chris came along the pool and offered us the trip; obviously one will be much sceptical as it's not offered by the hotel; but we took the chance and didn't regret it any moment of it! The music, the vibe, the food, the service, the skipper; the drinks were EXCELLENT! We were looked after and cared so well; never had to wait for anything and everything was on time and well planned! Chris and Kenny (skipper) went out of their way to provide us the BEST experience ever! I will really recommend anyone to book through Papa's dream- it is really worth EVERY CENT! One of the Highlights of our trip and we are so glad we know Papa's Dream- tomorrow we will be doing parasailing through them! Anything to support such a reputable business! Well done!!! We made the BEST memories!

I am very disappointed and disgusted with what we got from Chris and Papa’s Dream. Having planned and started booking our Mauritius trip before COVID, we could not wait for the trip to finally happen. Chris and Papa’s Dream came highly recommended through friends who described an epic day filled with music, lots of Rum and Lobsters on the beach. Needless to say, we had no music, 2 small glasses with very strong poured rum and no lobster on the beach. There was not even enough fish for each person to have a decent portion. AND!!! THE WORST PART!!! Only to find that while we were charged 7000 rupees, a couple from a hotel less than 1km away from ours, paid 5000 rupees for the same trip. BUT!!! THAT’S NOT ALL!!! Then later when we moved to the other side of the island for our second week of holiday, the tour shop at reception offered the same “5 Island, South East Tour” at 1800 rupees per person. We feel totally ripped off and scammed! Rather make use of “Cote D’Azure Travel & Tours”. They have more to offer at much better prices.

A very enjoyable day booked with Chris at Amber Resort. Transport arrived on time and within minutes on the Quay side being shown aboard the boat. Informative tour around the islands with dolphins close to boat and plenty time to explore the Islands. Opportunity to snorkel and taste Captain Kenny’s coffee!! Hot BBQ lunch with yet more coffee. A great day with lots of fun and laughter. Very much recommended.

Such an amazing day, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We booked with Chris after seeing many recommendations on Ambre Resorts TripAdvisor page. I was nearly 27 weeks pregnant at the time of the tour and felt really safe and well looked after, nothing was too much trouble. We saw monkeys, dolphins, turtles and went snorkeling, which was incredible. Bbq on the beach was very tasty and the rum certainly flowed, not for me of course but plenty of soft drinks on offer. Kenny was our skipper for the day and was very informative and had a brilliant sense of humour. Highly recommend.

What an amazing day out with Kenny and a very good time was had by all, if you like coffee tasting Kenny is the man 😀. Not expensive and well worth the money. You'll see the monkeys the dolphins 🐬 and the water fall and even swim and feed the fish in the Indian ocean and possibly swim with turtles if your quick enough. A full day out and you will come back having a very good laugh and a big thanks to Chris and Kenny.
