Creating a Memorable House Tour Experience

Creating a memorable house tour experience is all about having the right combination of organization, detail and hospitality. It doesn’t matter if you’re showing off a newly remodeled home or a piece of living history; planning the perfect tour requires a bit of effort and attention to detail. Implementing these simple tips will help ensure a tour that your guests will remember and appreciate.

  • First, set the stage by offering information and atmosphere. Providing guests a brief history of the home, and even the origin of the owners and family, can create a greater appreciation of the tour and its features. Consider adding a few special touches to provide a pleasant atmosphere and your guests’ comfort. Examples include offering a beverage, a light snack, or a fragrant candle. Also, clear away any clutter to ensure the tour’s focus is the home and its features.
  • Finally, be sure to focus your tour appropriately. An effective guide knows what to skip and what to linger on. Concentrate most of your attention on the key areas or unique features, as you don’t want to bore or overwhelm your guests. Make sure you have time allotted for questions and discussion and you’re also available to follow up with post-tour information or gift bags. When it’s all said and done, be sure to thank your guests and they’ll certainly remember and appreciate your efforts. Good luck!

Creating a memorable house tour experience begins with careful planning. As your guests will be seeing a variety of areas and elements of your home, be sure that each portion of the tour has both a purpose and significance. First, focus on the unique features of your home, such as built-in cabinetry or fireplaces, and highlight why your home is special or unique. Take some time to provide a brief history of the home and its owners and be sure to provide a few special touches to create a pleasant atmosphere.

Choosing the Best Furnishings For a House Tour

Choosing the best furnishings for a house tour can be a daunting task. You want to make sure that the furnishings in the house look great, and that they also present a home that visitors will be eager to visit. To make sure that the furnishings you choose will be the perfect complement to the house, here are some tips on selecting the ideal pieces.

  • First, it is essential to choose furniture that is both comfortable and visually pleasing. Consider the size, shape, and style of the furniture, and make sure that it complements the dĂ©cor in the house. Materials such as stainless steel, brass and leather can give a modern look, while more traditional pieces may be better for a more classic touch. Additionally, think about furniture that is easy to move around if needed, such as an armchair that can swivel and rock. Finally, look at the existing fabrics and wallpapers in the house and select furnishings that work well with those colors or patterns.
  • Lastly, it is important to consider the emotional impact of the furnishings. Choose pieces that make the guests feel welcome and safe. This could include a cozy sofa in the living room, a comfy dining table in the kitchen or a luxurious armchair in the bedroom. By selecting pieces that embody the goal of the tour, visitors will be able to appreciate the furnishings and feel right at home.

In short, when selecting the best furnishings for a house tour, consider the size, style, materials and emotional impact of the pieces. By choosing the right furniture, visitors will not only enjoy the tour but also be able to appreciate the beauty of the home.

The 10 Best Architectural Digest Celebrity House Tours on YouTube

home tour youtube

Architectural Digest's YouTube channel, and its "Open Door" series in particular, is one of life's greatest gifts. It filled the void that MTV cribs left in its wake when the series ended in 2010... and we're huge fans.

Because it's not every day we real estate addicts get to see behind the closed doors of luxurious, extravagant, and quirky celebrity homes. From a converted windmill in the Hamptons and a duplex penthouse apartment at the Plaza Hotel in NYC to the mansions of the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles , each home on this list will leave you both in awe and filled with inspiration.

These are the top 10 best Architectural Digest celebrity house tours...

1. robert downey jr..

First up we have Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey's converted windmill abode. This is not your run-of-the-mill (see what we did there?) Hamptons summer home, it was designed by renowned New York City firm Fox-Nahem Associates who transformed the late-19th century windmill into a charming and very private East Hampton masterpiece with stunning grounds. The highlight? Susan's office in the very top of the windmill is the ideal WFH situation and we couldn't be more jealous.

In this very humorous home tour we get to see everything from Robert's art projects and clutter closets to their table-side nap zone and numerous cats. If you're in the mood for a chuckle, look no further.

2. Dakota Johnson

If you love all things mid-century modern, this is the celebrity home tour for you.

Architectural Digest kindly bring us inside the beautiful home of movie star Dakota Johnson. Formerly the home of director Ryan Murphy, Dakota purchased the super private Hollywood Hills home for $3.55 million in 2016. Features of envy include beautiful crushed mohair vintage sofas, her cozy office with book wall, gorgeous green kitchen, and backyard oasis complete with citrus trees, a heated swimming pool, and an elevated bamboo-sheltered hot tub area.

There isn't an inch of this lush but humble abode that we don't love.

3. Wiz Khalifa

This episode of "Open Door" is currently the most viewed of all time with 43 million views. It brings us inside Wiz Khalifa's $4.6 million mansion and recording studio in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles.

The rapper's super cool pad features a heated infinity pool with incredible views, a games room with a dab AND booze bar, an underground recording studio, weed-themed photo wall, and a fleet of killer cars. Proof that this man is living the dream.

4. Cara and Poppy Delevigne

You may never find more personality in a home thanks to the Delevigne sisters' jungle-inspired home in Los Angeles.

NicolĂČ Bini of Line Architecture told Architectural Digest of the home, “I wanted to create a true L.A. moment for them, with nods to California midcentury modern, Laurel Canyon bohemia, Beverly Hills swank, surfing culture, and a little Mexico. Then we tied all that in with Cara and Poppy’s Englishness to give the house another layer of Delevingne charm.” The interior of this home is one-of-a-kind, no doubt about it.

Header image credit: Architectural Digest / Trevor Tondro

Over in Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles , you'll find producer and DJ Zedd's $16 million mansion.

Highlights of this Architectural Digest "Open Door" episode include the incredible canyon and hill views, indoor trees, an art gallery, and a Skittle machine. Spanning a whopping 9,500 square feet, this mansion even has its own detached studio and gym and will soon have a separate "guest-house-bowling-alley-complex". Casual...

You can understand why this is the second most viewed video on Architectural Digest's YouTube with a staggering 43 million views.

6. Kendall Jenner

Next up we have supermodel and Kardashian clan member Kendall Jenner whose serene Los Angeles home was designed by Kathleen and Tommy Clements and Waldo Fernandez. The interior of the home blends super tasteful elements and earthy shades with fun, unexpected pops of color and a calm, peaceful atmosphere.

Keep an eye out for Kendall's incredible art collection including a signature James Turrell ovoid wall sculpture as well as her incredible fireplace, beautiful bar, art studio, dream-worthy chef's kitchen, gold bathtub, glam room, and so much more.

7. J Balvin

Travel with us to Colombia for this next "Open Door" episode where we get to explore superstar J Balvin's tranquil home. Inspired by Japan aesthetics and minimalism, the house features floor-to-ceiling windows that bring nature indoors. The open plan kitchen and living room open up to the great outdoors, with a wonderful indoor / outdoor flow. The pool area is beyond dream-worthy and is surrounded by lush and tropical greenery and bonsai trees.

The minimalism and neutral color palette changes greatly when you enter J Balvin's walk-in closet where  over 850 pairs of sneaker line the walls in explosions of color. The man loves his shoes...

8. Hilary Duff

Next we'll enjoy a tour of Hilary Duff's vibrant, colorful, and cheerful family home in Los Angeles . A self-confessed home renovation addict, Hilary has renovated this house twice in the last eight years. The latest one has resulted in a quirky and somewhat eccentric aesthetic with a focus on family, livability, and large spaces to spend time in with beautiful art and tasteful features throughout.

The highlight of this home tour has got to be the chicken coop out in the back yard.

9. Tommy Hilfiger

Journey back to New York with us now for what may be the most luxurious and opulent home on this list. Legendary fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger and his wife Dee reportedly purchased this duplex penthouse apartment at the Plaza Hotel for $25.5 million in 2008 (they've since sold it for $31 million, although originally listed it for $80 million).

This Plaza apartment overlooks Central Park, with incredible views of the city as far as the eye can see. This particular unit steeped in history having once hosted the likes of The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, and many more iconic figures. You won't find another apartment like this in New York City.

BROWSE:  Homes for sale in New York here.

10. Aaron Paul

Come check out Aaron Paul's custom wood and stone Idaho home. Despite the house being enormous, it has a very cozy, almost cabin-like vibe to it, tucked away in the snowy mountains and surrounded by trees and lakes. Just watching this home tour will make you feel warm 'n' fuzzy inside.

With the help of interior designer Jake Arnold and Pearson Design Group, the Pauls purchased and used the wood from three 120-year-old barns to build the house from scratch. Drool over the cathedral ceilings, vast living spaces, stone bathrooms, spacious bedrooms, and an incredible floor-to-ceiling fireplace.

Plus, a bonus one, but a must-watch nonetheless.

11. Naomi Campbell

Last but not least, we just haaad to include icon Naomi Campbell's Kenya compound and airy villa. On the coast of the Indian Ocean, in the tranquil seaside town of Malindi, lies this tranquil and "very calming place".

From the indoor/outdoor flow and two pools, to the restaurant-like outdoor dining area and on-site spa - we've never seen anything quite like this one... take a look for yourself.

Inspirational Home Tour of a Photographer's Work Space

This home tour is of photographer Bart Kuykens' home in Belgium. He grew up in the home and eventually purchased it from his mother when she decided to move. I always find it inspirational to see a working photographer living their dream and in their dream home. Kuykens is a celebrity photographer and best known for his coffee table books of Porsches in scenes around the world.

A home says a lot about a person, I think it's important to have a space that can be inspirational and a place to play and explore. Kuykens re-imagined his garage into a workspace, hangout space, and a place to live and be with his Porsche. I love this space, and I’m inspired to have something similar; a think tank, a place to work, read, listen to music, and become inspired. I work from home, so I think a great space to get away to in your own home and play is essential.

As I mentioned, I am a lover of architecture and design, and a high-design space is something that inspires me and allows creativity to flow. Kuykens' workspace does just that. Comfort is key as you want to be able to grab your laptop or coffee table book, kick back, relax, and explore or work. Having your work hanging on the walls of your home or workspace is also a great way to stay inspired and just to be proud and reminded of what you have accomplished.

As Kuykens says, no one is going to come knocking on your door asking you to work for them; you have to get out, connect with people, and go for it!

HOUSE Summer Home Tour (and a Home Tour Video)

home tour youtube

Last week I had the most amazing team come to the house from Farmhouse Living.

They have an incredible blog.

And an amazing YouTube channel.

They showed up and toured the house and asked me questions and listened to all the stories from the house.

All the DIY’s.

All the thrift store finds.

All the times I lay on the ground in my bathroom in my wedding dress.

And the best part?

They got it all on tape.

She sent me the video and the photographs and when I watched the footage, I discovered something amazing.

I am in LOVE with my house.

And so today, I want to take you on a tour complete with stories and ideas and DIY’s and never-before-seen angles of the house and share with you 20 reasons why I love my home.

Are you ready?

You might want to grab refreshments.

It’s a LOT.

home tour youtube

1. This crack

Can you see it? Right there in the glass on the door?

I never really photograph it.

That crack is amazing.

It’s how I feel about my entire house. Imperfect and distressed and worn and thrifted and lived in and yard saled.

But absolutely perfect.

2. These blue and white striped chairs

I’ve ordered six of them.

You can find them and all the pieces that are near and dear to my heart on my Shop My House page.

3. The molding in this room

It’s 12″ thick and layers and layers of different types of molding created by some craftsman 100 years ago after he finished putting up the crops.

home tour youtube

4. This bay window

It’s where the Christmas tree has gone for my entire life.

We replaced the windows and now they open up and let in the breezes on a cool afternoon.

I just found this table at a thrift store and transformed it to fit in this space.

5. The color on these walls

This room has been painted a zillion different colors.

And right now?

This one is my favorite.

It’s SW Extra White and it’s the perfect backdrop for all that pattern.

6. The map on the far wall

You’ll NEVER guess where I found it.

It’s the original map of our subdivision and it showed up here.

home tour youtube

7. The texture on this wall

You can see it so much better in the home tour video, but the texture in this room is amazing.

My sister took a comb and dragged it through drywall mud when we were in high school.

And the texture is still there.

8. These vintage french doors

They are oversized and beautiful and they frame the view into the living room.

We replaced the hinges, but the hardware is original.

home tour youtube

9. This bathroom

This is where I put lipstick on in this mirror before I walked outside for my first date.

It’s where I stood after I accepted a marriage proposal from an Angry Lemon.

Most of the major events in my life have started and ended with a footstep from these floors.

home tour youtube

10. This mirrored staircase

In the video, we discuss this staircase how all these vintage mirrors came together to form a wall.

I found them from all over the world.

Whichever came first.

11. These stair rods

They make me so happy every time I walk up the stairs.

Stair rods are like jewelry.

And my staircase is bejeweled.

home tour youtube

12. The molding on this staircase

I get asked all the time for a tutorial on this molding.

I had nothing to do with it.

Some incredible craftsman created it before I was ever born.

Probably right after he finished the living room molding.

13. This tiny dresser

It was my husband’s grandmother’s.

Those tiny little casters on the bottom.

It was damaged and we painted and distressed it.

home tour youtube

14. The color on this kitchen island

We recently painted kitchen island SW Peppercorn.

It’s the prettiest color.

We painted the butler’s pantry the same color, too.

15. All the stories

The picture above catches me in action.

If you came over for sweet tea, this is what my face would look like.

It’s always in motion.

home tour youtube

16. All the places to sit in this kitchen

There are so many different stations in this kitchen.

And I’m here for all of them.

This kitchen is the heart of our home and the place where all the stories show up and stay.

17. These wood floors

The rest of the floors in the house are over 100 years old.

But these floors?

My mother added them 30 years ago and we recently had them refinished.

I love these built-ins and how they are organized.

The door in here is an old dutch door with a top and a bottom.

And the tiled floor has my heart, too.

19. The built-ins in the family room

My mother added them years ago.

We redid them and added lighting and molding.

They just make me happy.

You are such an amazing person and storyteller, and your home reflects the love and memories you have in it! I, too, live in the home where I grew up that my grandfather built for us the year I was born. It’s so true that our home reflects who we are. So many memories of growing up here, and now my children and grandchildren are making more memories here for me! Your stories are always so inspirational and I look forward to your blog every day!

Loved the video! You make me want to get back to the blog I started about a year ago. I love your philosophy about your home. I feel the same way about. I have lived in many homes but believe your home should tell your story. The best compliment I get is when someone comes in and says, "Your house is so you." I enjoy your house and your stories!

Image for marilyn ackerman

So much of your home reminds me of where I grew up in New Jersey. The kitchen windows, the staircase, the Oak flooring, etc.,the great times I had there are the best. Then I thought about it and realized that "my house" was built in 1930 so It is old to. Gosh I miss the place and the good times, and family that is gone. The town there has change so that it is nothing like "home" used to be, but thank God for the memories. Your home is lovely, the love just oozes out of every corner.

Image for Jillian

Always enjoy a tour of your home. What strikes me the most, pretty as it is, is that this is where a family and friends gather and share laughter, holidays, and life. That is priceless. Wondering where you keep appliances. Do you make toast etc in your pantry?

Image for Teresa Y George

Enjoyed the video so much! Even though we know your home well, it was so fun to see how everything flows together. And, of course, we never tire of your delightful stories and positivity! Congrats, Karianne!

Totally enjoyed your home tour Karianne. You and your husband have created a wonderful 'home' for family and friends. Thank you so very much for you're willingness to share all of the creativity, fun stories, beauty and encouragement that seems to just keep on flowin' out of ya ! Please don't ever change that lovely heart of yours ! Enjoy your day. Jayne

Hi Karianne, I read your blog everyday, and I thought the video was fantastic! I loved hearing the stories about your family. I love the part where you said I could come over and eat chocolate cake on your white sofas. I would be very careful. You are the very best! You spread happiness.

You are the sweetest most down to earth person, if we ever meet I think I would love to get a hug from you and we are sisters in Christ, and I am so glad. Love your home and stories.

Karianne Love Love Love the tour of your home!!!! It's so comfy and cozy feeling. I love the stair rods; they add so much to the runner. Love that idea. Thanks for always opening yourself to others and your heart is in everything you do!!!! You can see that all over your home. I don't do much white in our home but you have used the blue accents all over your home and it just warms it up, I love that you were able to purchase your farmhouse where you grew up. l know that means the world to you and your beautiful family. Thanks for sharing , jean

Karrianne, I loved this tour. It was so refreshing to see your home all put together in 1 place so I could admire and scroll back in case I missed something. I need to ask a few things though, why did your sister use a comb and add drywall mud on the wall? Did she get in trouble? Next question, why do you lay on the bathroom floor in your wedding dress? Next on the cute table with the wooden apple and wooden beads and books, those round wooden things I think they are in a white vase are so sweet what are they? And finally can I come to your house and eat chocolate cake in your livingroom?(lol) I look forward to 7 oclock when dinner is over the kitchen is cleaned up to sit and spend an hour every evening with you. You are much admired. Kim

I want to do better when I take a tour of your home. It is a lot bigger than mine and decorator to the hilt, but I try! You are an inspiration to me and I thank you. The weight loss gets in there too!!!

Such a beautiful tour. I love all the history behind your home. Unfortunately, we didn't have as many cool things in our 101-year-old-home because they did an 80s remodel. Love too many things to list them. Love that your sister put her comb through the drywall mud. Not sure if that got her in trouble or not.

House Beautiful's Most Popular Home Tours of 2021, According to Instagram

From a cool cocktail and storage nook in Atlanta to a country superstar's sweet nursery, these spectacular snapshots raked in the most likes on our feed.

More surprising picks include a mint-chocolate-chip-colored cabana on Long Island, a cozy baby’s room in Nashville, and an elegant New England foyer.

Officially intrigued? Keep scrolling for the most-beloved interiors to grace HB ’s IG page in 2021!

The quaint cocktail nook of this colorful Atlanta home by Melanie Turner racked up the most nods by a landslide.

“It’s probably the most thoughtful project we’ve ever worked on,” the designer tells House Beautiful . “A young family, a historic house, heirlooms, and playfulness all in one.”

Exposed brick floors lend this Texas kitchen reimagined by designer Marie Flanigan and her associate, Ashlee Garner, its rustic European look.

“The overall aesthetic is one that’s layered and transitional with an underbelly of tradition,” Flanigan says of the Houston home .

Just off the mudroom of this Hamptons family retreat by Lauren Wills lies a light-filled cabana replete with everything you need for a lazy afternoon on the beach.

The cheery space showcases no-fuss cement floors that make for easy cleanup.

When it came to revamping her longtime abode in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, designer Liz Caan repurposed a lot of pieces and strategically filled the historic house with whimsical art and antiques.

“I think the beauty of this home is that it's constantly evolving," she says.

Want beautiful homes? We’ve got plenty. Let’s swoon over them together.

Instagrammers swooned over this darling nursery , thoughtfully put together by Nashville-based designer April Tomlin for her close friend Lauren Akins (who happens to be married to country superstar Thomas Rhett).

"It is a real and happy home," Tomlin enthuses. "I love how much love it holds."

Liz Caan turned heads once again with this shot of her family home’s incredible kitchen , which features an enviable walk-in pantry.

“I wanted this kitchen to have some soul and wanted to be surrounded by things I love made by people I love,” she reveals.

The English-inspired kitchen and servery of this Nova Scotia new build by Philip Mitchell boasts reclaimed antique wood floors, handcrafted cabinetry, and ultradurable surfaces.

“Every drawer is divided to hold something specific, whether it’s utensils or spices,” notes the designer.

Designed by Nannette Brown , the glossy all-black kitchen of this New York City apartment oozes with high drama and sophistication.

“I’m a big believer that within a home, different rooms should evoke different feelings and purposes,” says the local designer.

The spectacular transformation of this Boston home bar by Twelve Chairs Interiors , designed for serious wine collectors who love to entertain, involved adding an extra row of cabinets and polished nickel knobs and pulls—not to mention a fun rolling ladder.

“By going all the way up, we added function and erased the unsightly void,” explains the firm’s cofounder, Miggy Mason.

Last but not least: Rounding out this year’s list is Brown Hall Design principal Colleen Bashaw’s sweet bar setup.

Replete with a little brass sink and mini fridge, the charming space seamlessly blends in with the rest of her New Jersey home ’s whimsical interiors.

During the search for her new Houston abode, AD PRO Directory designer Paloma Contreras grew frustrated by the abundance of new builds she saw sporting open-plan spaces decked out with trendy finishes. So, when a realtor showed her an off-market listing for a 3,700-square-foot home built in 1987 with a classic layout revolving around a central hall, Contreras snapped it up. “I’m a traditionalist at heart,” she points out. “I like walls because we collect art and I like decorating distinct rooms.”

Contreras and her husband, Fabian, the director of hospitality and contract at Visual Comfort & Co. , decamped from the lively Museum District to the more family-friendly West University neighborhood (yet conveniently still near Contreras’s office and Paloma & Co., the home decor shop she founded in 2019) with their young daughter Margot in 2023.

Although the previous owners had made impressive renovations and Contreras was taken with such details as the millwork and Versailles pattern floor in the entry, noting that they “make the house feel older than it is,” ample updates were necessary. There were rigid move-in and move-out dates to contend with too, leaving Contreras only one month to oversee the revamp.

The red brick façade was painted, the gray ceramic pavers were swapped for bluestone, the shutters were removed, and inside, Contreras was eager to embrace color, a departure from her more neutral last residence. Take the dining room, complete with a corner banquette ideal for settling in with an aperitif. Located just off the entry, its starting point was de Gournay’s verdant Portobello wallpaper, one of Contreras’s favorite designs, which she paired with spring green drapery “to add a sense of energy,” she says, and Paul Lange’s photograph of a large-scale peony she first fell for when she displayed it in the sunroom that she designed for the 2022 Kips Bay Palm Beach Decorator Showhouse.

AndrĂ© Arbus chairs from the 1930s, found on one of Contreras’s trips to Paris, were reupholstered in a treated mauve-tinted suede and join the two regal host chairs around the pedestal table that she designed with a fluted base. Like many of the light fixtures found throughout the home, the chandelier comes from Contreras’s collection for Visual Comfort & Co.

Across the foyer, in the living room, Contreras relishes the look of the original double hung windows, but they are shallow, so she opted for “old-school balloon shades, something more formal and glamorous,” she explains. She melded them with the likes of a box-pleated sofa because “it felt so pretty and fresh” and a console inherited from her parents that she lacquered in a rich chocolate hue to give the room some heft. She also transformed the hearth and fireplace surround with a honed Nero Marquina marble that felt more graphic than its shiny hunter green predecessor, and showcased a series of plaster, charcoal, and pencil works by Birmingham, Alabama–based artist Jane Timberlake Cooper.

Past the 19th-century Louis XVI commode—the first antique Contreras ever purchased—in the hallway is the powder room flaunting marble salvaged from the kitchen countertops and the bar the old owners converted from a closet that Contreras reimagined the bar area with a Fine Paints of Europe Prussian blue.

Thanks to those owners extending the back of the house with a bump-out, Contreras has a commodious light-filled family room that flows into the breakfast table and kitchen and leads to the patio and garden. “This is where we spend a ton of time. We start our mornings here, we end our nights here,” she says. Cabinets conceal her daughter’s stash of toys and books and the ottoman upholstered in performance fabric that Contreras designed with even more handy storage takes the place of a coffee table. “The wooden table in our last place got destroyed,” she recalls.

To transition to the upstairs spaces, Contreras enlivened the stair landing with abstract paintings on antique register pages from Catherine Booker Jones, another Birmingham artist. On this floor is the sizable guest room, where Fabian retreats when working from home, and the primary bedroom kitted out with chocolate brown walls and the speckled Les Touches motif from Brunschwig & Fils. “I feel best and most comfortable in spaces that aren’t overdone. So, I decided I would just take that fabric and treat it as a hero,” elaborates Contreras, who chose it for the bespoke tester canopy and occasional chairs that sport button tufts and piping “to highlight the sinuous shape.”

Undoubtedly, the sweetest element in the home is the mural gracing her daughter’s nursery. Contreras tapped Falls Church, Virginia–based artist Riley Sheehey to paint an enchanting vignette, scaled down and printed as wallpaper, that takes cues from New York’s Bemelmans Bar and French painter Raoul Dufy. “We made our own version of something whimsical and scenic and put in some of her favorite things,” Contreras says. “She loves squirrels, so there are a couple of squirrels having a picnic, and I love France, so there’s an Eiffel Tower.”

Kamala Harris to tour blood-stained building where 2018 Florida school massacre happened

  • Associated Press

PARKLAND, Fla. — Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday is expected to tour the blood-stained classroom building where the 2018 Parkland high school massacre happened, accompanied by some victims’ family members who are pushing for stricter gun laws and improved school safety.

Harris’ visit will be the latest by elected officials and law enforcement and education leaders in recent months to the boarded-up, three-story building, which stands on the north side of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The tragic landmark has loomed over the school’s 3,600 students from behind temporary fencing since the Feb. 14, 2018, shooting that left 14 students and three staff members dead and 17 wounded.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona toured the building in January and several members of Congress, mostly Democrats, have gone through since law enforcement returned custody of the building to the school district last summer.

When Harris goes inside, she will see bullet-pocked walls and floors still covered in dried blood and broken glass. Shoes left behind by fleeing students and wilted Valentine’s Day flowers and balloons are strewn about. Textbooks, laptop computers and papers remain on desks. Only personal items such as backpacks and purses have been removed.

Former student Nikolas Cruz, then 19, fired about 140 shots from his AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle during his six-minute attack. He pleaded guilty in 2021.

“The building is a time capsule,” said Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Stoneman Douglas graduate who helped organize the visit. Harris, he said, will “learn about the failures of the building, the failures of the response to the shooting by law enforcement, the failures in the training of the teachers, the failures of threat assessments of the shooter and the failure of all the warning signs.”

Some Stoneman Douglas families who participate in the tours, along with President Joe Biden, want the sale of AR-15s and similar guns banned, as they were from 1994 to 2004, but there isn’t sufficient support in Congress. Opponents, which include other victims’ families, argue that such a ban would violate the Second Amendment and do little to stem gun violence.

Linda Beigel Schulman said the tour will show Harris the carnage a mass shooting creates — it no longer will be an abstract concept. Beigel Schulman’s 35-year-old son, geography teacher Scott Beigel, was killed as he ushered students to safety in his classroom. The papers he was grading when the shooting began remain on his desk.

“She understands how important gun violence prevention is for us,” Beigel Schulman said of the vice president. “But when you go into the actual building and see what actually happened, it doesn’t matter that it is six years later, it really does something to you.”

Max Schachter, whose son Alex died in the shooting, uses the tours to persuade officials to enact school safety measures such as making doors and windows bullet-resistant. Alex, 14, died from shots fired through the window of his classroom’s door. Schachter said while there is disagreement over gun laws, school safety brings the sides together. He pointed particularly to a fall visit by Utah officials leading to that state enacting a $100 million plan to harden its schools.

“I couldn’t save Alex, but every time I have officials come through that building, lives are saved,” Schachter said.

During Harris’ visit, the White House says, she will announce a program to provide technical assistance and training to Florida and the other 20 states that have similar “red flag laws.” Florida’s law allows officers, with a judge’s permission, to temporarily seize guns belonging to anyone shown to be a danger to others or themselves. The statute has been used more than 12,000 times since it was enacted six years ago in response to the Parkland shooting. Harris also will call on states without red flag laws to adopt them.

The building where the Parkland massacre happened were preserved as evidence for the 2022 penalty trial of Cruz, who received a life sentence instead of the death penalty, angering the victims’ families. The structure also was saved for the trial of the school’s sheriff’s deputy, Scot Peterson, who was acquitted last year on charges that he retreated instead of confronting Cruz.

Cruz’s jury toured the building, but Peterson’s judge rejected prosecutors’ request to bring his panel to the school. The Broward County school district plans to demolish the building this summer over the objection of some victims’ families who want to show it to more officials.

Even officials who don’t support stronger gun laws learn from the tours, leading to better discussions, Moskowitz said. He believes there is broad support in Congress for increased school safety spending and a federal “red flag” law.

Cruz had a long history of troubling and bizarre behavior, including animal torture. In the weeks before the shooting, he had been reported to local law enforcement and the FBI by people fearing he was planning a mass shooting, but no action was taken. Mookie Betts hits a home run, wins a new car in MLB World Tour: Seoul Series

Mookie Betts

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts has hit a lot of home runs in his MLB career, 253 of them to be exact. But the Dodgers’ shortstop has never hit one that compares to his latest effort in the MLB World Tour: Seoul Series on Thursday .

With the Dodgers trailing the Padres 10-6, Betts stepped to the plate against Padres pitcher Michael King and worked the count to his favor before absolutely smashing a baseball over the fence in left-center. The ball traveled 400 feet and brought home Jason Heyward to bring the score within reach at 10-8.

While hitting a home run overseas may be a moment he never forgets, the real treat, aside from helping his team narrow the deficit, was the fact that Betts’ home run also won him a brand-new car.

The Hyundai Motor Company is based out of South Korea, which makes it the perfect establishment to partner with the MLB Tour Seoul Series. Part of the agreement included giving away a brand new car to whoever hit the first home run during the two-game series.

Thus, when Betts cranked his home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, he won a new Hyundai IONIQ 5.

The first HR of the 2024 season belongs to @mookiebetts ! #SeoulSeries pic.twitter.com/PtSrfxBHNY — MLB (@MLB) March 21, 2024

Betts’ home run was the first of the MLB season, which is crazy considering 16 runs had already been scored, in addition to another seven more on Wednesday. Yet, only Betts will be taking home a new car.

Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2024 Valspar Championship

After three weeks in Florida, we’ve arrived at the final leg of the swing in the Sunshine State. Austin Eckroat won the Cognizant Classic at the Palm Beaches before World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler dominated the next two weeks at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship.

The Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course has a great field competing for the $8.4 million overall purse, with $1.512 million going to the winner. For comparison, Scheffler earned $8.5 million the last two weeks—more than this week’s total purse.

RELATED: Here are the 13 best bets to win this year at the Masters

Xander Schauffele and Brian Harman both ended last week a shot behind Scheffler at TPC Sawgrass and both are two of the biggest draws in the Valspar field. Two-time Valspar champion Sam Burns is here at one of his favorite, and most profitable, PGA Tour events. Justin Thomas, fresh off a missed cut last week at the Players, is at Innisbrook, as is Jordan Spieth, who has finished inside the top 20 in five of his six starts here. He tied for third place a year ago.

Taylor Moore is the defending champion. He is seven-for-seven in made cuts this year.

March 23, 2024 Shooting at Moscow concert venue leaves over 130 dead

By Chris Lau, Andrew Raine , Catherine Nicholls, Issy Ronald, Lauren Said-Moorhouse and Tori B. Powell , CNN

Our live coverage of the Moscow concert venue shooting has moved here.

North Korea’s Kim Jong Un sends condolences to Russia’s Putin over deadly Moscow attack

From CNN’s Sophie Jeong and Manveena Suri

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has offered his condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin following the deadly concert attack in Moscow, state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Sunday.

Kim “expressed deep condolences and sympathy” to Putin, the Russian people, the victims and their families on the news of heavy casualties caused by a “large-scale terrorist attack in (the) Moscow region,” KCNA reported.

North Korea opposes “all sorts of terrorism and nothing can justify the heinous terrorism threatening human life,” Kim said in the KCNA report. “Our people regard the misfortune and sorrow of the friendly Russian people as their own pain.”

ISIS releases graphic video they claim shows Russia concert hall attack

From CNN's Kareem El Damanhoury and Paul Murphy

ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq released a graphic video on Saturday that purports to show Friday’s attack at a concert hall in suburban Moscow recorded by one of the attackers, suggesting the perpetrators had a direct link to ISIS in order to be able to send the video.

CNN has geolocated it to the concert hall and notes that its identifying metadata has been erased.

The video, which is about 90 seconds long, shows four attackers with their faces blurred and voices distorted in what appears to be the Crocus City Hall complex.

The video shows one attacker signaling to another gunman, who then walks past a door where people are hiding and opens fire on them.

Bodies and blood can be seen on the floor, with fire raging at a distance.

The video also shows one of the attackers slitting the throat of a man lying on his back.

The video ends with the four attackers walking away inside the building as smoke can be seen at a distance.

On Friday, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a short statement published by Amaq.

On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested Ukraine was behind the attack, stating the perpetrators had “tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the border.”

Ukraine has vehemently denied any connection to Friday's attack.

Company that owns Crocus City Hall venue calls attack a "monstrous tragedy"

From CNN's Masha Angelova

A woman lights candles at a memorial near Crocus City Hall, on the western edge of Moscow, on Saturday.

The Russian company Crocus International, which owns Crocus City Hall, expressed its deep condolences in a statement Sunday to the victims of the terrorist attack at the concert hall in the Moscow region Friday, which left more than 130 people dead.

"Together with the whole of Russia, we mourn the dead and hope for a speedy recovery of those who’ve suffered in this monstrous tragedy," the company said. "In these difficult days, we are doing and will do everything possible to help the authorities and special services with their difficult work, and together with the whole country help victims of the terrorist attack."

The statement thanked concert-goers, partners and artists for their support and assistance.

"Special thanks to the concert hall team, who acted professionally, clearly, and heroically in a crisis situation, and thanks to this, managed to save most of the guests and employees who were in Crocus City Hall that evening," it continued.

White House says there was "no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever" in Moscow region onslaught

From CNN's Natasha Bertrand and Samantha Waldenberg

US Vice President Kamala Harris and the White House National Security Council said there is no evidence that Ukraine is behind the attack at a concert hall near Moscow.

“There is no, whatsoever, any evidence — and in fact, what we know to be the case is that ISIS-K is actually, by all accounts, responsible for what happened,” Harris said in an interview with ABC News. “What has happened is an act of terrorism and the number of people who've been killed is obviously a tragedy and we should all send our condolences to those families."

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said:

"In early March, the US government shared information with Russia about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow. We also issued a public advisory to Americans in Russia on March 7. ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack. There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever."

Here's what you should know about the moscow area concert venue shooting.

From CNN staff

A Friday night attack at Crocus City Hall, a popular concert venue complex near Moscow, left more than 130 people killed and even more wounded after assailants stormed the venue with guns and incendiary devices. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, without providing evidence.

Four suspects involved in the attack were detained in the Bryansk region and taken to Moscow, where they are now in the custody of Russia's Investigative Committee, Russian state media TASS reported Saturday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said "miserable" Russian President Vladimir Putin waited   overnight before publicly addressing Russians, only to accuse   Ukraine of having a hand in the terror attack at a concert hall near Moscow.

Here are other headlines you should know:

  • More on the attack: According to the interior ministry, “all terrorists detained in the Bryansk region are foreign citizens ,” Russian state media reported. RIA Novosti published on Telegram the purported confession of one of the apprehended men. CNN cannot independently verify the RIA Novosti report or the statements made by the alleged attacker, which may have been made under duress.
  • Ukraine vehemently denies any connection: Defense Intelligence of Ukraine spokesperson Andrii Yusov firmly denied his country had anything to do with the terror attack. Earlier Saturday, Putin  told the Russian people  that the perpetrators had “tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the border." A handful of Russian officials have suggested  without evidence  that Ukraine may have been involved in the attack as well.
  • Global reactions: Leaders around the world — such as the French, Israeli and Turkish presidents — have expressed their condolences and condemnation of the onslaught. The United States “ strongly condemns ” the shooting, according to the White House and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also denounced the attack , stressing that ISIS is a significant global threat at a news conference Saturday.
  • Belarus claims it thwarted suspects: Belarusian special services helped Russia prevent the "terrorists" who allegedly carried out the deadly attack from escaping across the border Friday night, the country's ambassador in Moscow said.
  • Estimated damage total: The total estimated damage to the Moscow region's Crocus City Hall after Friday's terror attack is between 9.5-11.4 billion rubles, or approximately $103-124 million, according to a shopping union vice president, as reported by Russian state media RIA Novosti.

Zelensky accuses Putin of trying to blame concert hall attack on Ukraine

From CNN's Maria Kostenko

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky speaks at a press conference in Berlin on February 16.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said "miserable" Russian President Vladimir Putin waited overnight before publicly addressing Russians, only to accuse Ukraine of having a hand in the terror attack at a concert hall near Moscow.

On Saturday, Putin told the Russian people that the perpetrators of the Crocus City Hall attack had “tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the border.”

Zelensky and several Ukrainian officials have vehemently denied Ukraine has any kind of involvement in the attack.

In his nightly address, Zelensky also said that Russians "have come to Ukraine, burn our cities – and try to blame Ukraine."

Zelensky added that if the Russian people do "not ask any questions to their security and intelligence agencies, then Putin will try to turn such a situation to his personal advantage again."

More background: The terror group ISIS claimed responsibility for Russia's attack, according to a short statement published by ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram Friday. ISIS has not provided evidence to support the claim.

Earlier this week, Putin had dismissed warnings by the US embassy that there could be terrorist attacks on large groups, telling the Federal Security Service (FSB) that the embassy warnings were "provocative" and "outright blackmail."

White House "strongly condemns" Moscow region terror attack

From CNN’s Samantha Waldenberg

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre holds a briefing in Washington, DC, on March 22.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement Saturday that the United States “strongly condemns” the terrorist attack at a concert venue complex near Moscow that left at least 133 people dead.

She added that ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for the attack without providing evidence, is a “common terrorist enemy that must be defeated everywhere.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones and to those who were injured or affected by these unconscionable attacks against innocent civilians," Jean-Pierre said in a statement issued by the White House. "ISIS is a common terrorist enemy that must be defeated everywhere."

4 suspects in Friday's attack are being questioned by Russian investigators, state media reports

Four suspects in Friday's terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall were detained in the Bryansk region and taken to Moscow, where they are now in the custody of Russia's Investigative Committee, Russian state media TASS reported Saturday.

The suspects were brought in two prisoner transport vehicles, which are still in the courtyard of the committee, a TASS correspondent reported. This indicates that the suspects are being interrogated and the investigation is ongoing, according to TASS.

In the coming days, investigators are expected to file a court motion asking for imprisonment as the chosen preventative measure. All four suspects face life imprisonment, TASS reports.
