25 ROMBLON TOURIST SPOTS to Visit & Things to Do

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Good news! AirSWIFT has recently opened commercial passenger flights to Romblon, connecting the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 4 (NAIA-4) in Metro Manila to Tugdan Airport (TBH) in Tablas Island. The boutique airline is the first carrier to operate in the province since the pandemic disrupted most tourism activities globally.

Romblon’s only airport started operations many years ago, but it remains largely under the radar. It has been a favorite among scuba divers — thanks to the richness of its marine biodiversity — but most tourists have yet to discover all the other natural and historical wonders that it has to offer.

Airswift Romblon Airport

We were honored to be a part of AirSwift’s inaugural flight to Romblon, so we had a sneak peek into its tourism trove. In this article, we’ll share with you, some of the province’s key tourist spots with some practical information about each.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

TOP THINGS TO DO IN ROMBLON

The province of Romblon has three main islands: Romblon, Tablas, and Sibuyan. Around and in between them are several other isles and reefs that attract scuba divers and underwater photographers from around the world. Beach lovers can also have a field day in any of these islands!

In this section, we’ll share some of the top attractions outside the three main islands and activities that can be enjoyed in any part of the province.

Cobrador Island

Cobrador Island Romblon

Among beachgoers, Romblon is best-known for their three-island tour, which covers the isles north of Rombon Island: Alad, Logbon, and Cobrador. Of the three, Cobrador Island is the farthest and the northernmost, but it is also inhabited. Most of the settlements, however, are in the western and southwestern coasts, which are covered in a a wide bed of fine grains, shells and coral bits. The interior of the island is generally hilly, with some rocky cliffs and formations protruding into the sea, framing the serene beachscapes.

A notable attraction on the island is Tinagong Dagat , a natural saltwater pool tucked on the northeast coast. But as of writing, this part is temporarily closed.

Entrance Fee: P60 Environmental Fee: P30 How to Get to Cobrador Island: From Romblon Port, book an island hopping tour, which usually includes Logbon Island, Alad Island, and Cobrador Island in the itinerary. Sometimes it’s the first stop, other times, the last stop. The travel time from Romblon Port to Cobrador Island is about 45 minutes.

Cascarro Islet (Cliff Jumping)

Cascarro Islet Cliff Jumping

Most island hopping tours make a stop at nearby Cascarro Islet , where you can go cliff jumping, if the conditions are right! In the habagat season, the waves can get too strong, so boats might get a hard time getting closer to the stairs leading to the jumping board. In this case, you need to jump into the water from your boat and swim towards the islet.

Previously a guard station, this tiny adrenaline paradise still houses the guardhouse, painted in aquamarine.

Logbon Island

Logbon Island Romblon

Also part of the three-isle tour, Logbon Island has an almost uninterrupted beach that spans its entire western coast. But its most prominent feature is the Logbon Sandbar , dangling from its southeastern tip, just next to Romblon Beach Resort . (This is just the first of the many sandbars that we’ll mention in this article.)

From here, you can catch a glimpse of Bonbon Beach and Bang-og Island. On the other end of the cove lie the Nabagbagan Rocks .

How to Get to Logbon Island: From Romblon Port, get on a boat to Logbon Island. The travel time is 15-20 minutes. You can also join an island hopping tour, which usually includes Logbon Island, Alad Island, and Cobrador Island.

Alad Island

Located north of Logbon, Alad Island is another inhabited island boasting pristine and uncrowded beaches with ivory sand. A marine sanctuary, the island’s surrounding waters offer excellent snorkeling and diving spots in both the west and east coasts and are home to numerous species of fish and soft and hard corals.

How to Get to Alad Island: From Romblon Port, get on a boat to Alad Island. The travel time is 20-25 minutes. You can also hop on an island-hopping boat, which usually includes Logbon Island, Alad Island, and Cobrador Island in the itinerary.

Carabao Island

Carabao Island

Also referred to as Hambil Island, Carabao Island lies off the southern coast of Tablas Island. Here, you’ll find the town of San Jose, Romblon’s southernmost municipality. It is also conveniently close to Aklan’s Boracay Island, piquing the interest of more beach chasers who are looking for quieter, more laidback escape. From Boracay, you may simply book a boat tour to Carabao Island and be back within the day.

Its nooks and crannies are filled with white sand, punctuated by cliff diving sites and lined with highly Instagrammable coconut trees.

Covering a land area of 22.05 square kilometers, it boasts a number of attractions including:

  • Lanas Beach
  • San Jose Beach
  • Tagaytay Viewpoint
  • cliff jumping spots like Cathedral Cave and Koding Koding

It can be accessed either way: via Santa Fe Port (about an hour) in Romblon or via Boracay (40-45 minutes). Cabalian Channel separates Carabao Island from Tablas Island, while Hambil Channel separates it from Boracay Island.

How to Get to Carabao Island: If coming from Tablas, go to Santa Fe Port, then take about to Carabao Island. If coming from Boracay, just charter a boat or book a day tour. If you are in the Caticlan area, go to Tabon Port, then take a boat to Carabao Island.

Scuba Diving

While the greater touristing public is still taking its sweet time discovering its many beaches, scuba divers from all over the globe have long been making Romblon their home and playground.

Romblon is positioned near the mouth of the Verde Island Passage, considered the area with the richest biodiversity on the planet. Beneath the waves is an underwater wonderland, marked by a number of dive sites including:

  • Three P House Reef
  • Bonbon Sea Grass Valley

One of the places we stayed at in Romblon Island is Three P Holiday and Dive Resort , which has access to the House Reef. We met two of three brothers, who own the resort, and they mentioned that most of their guests are divers who wish to see some of the rare creatures found in the surrounding reefs.

Romblon Food Trip

Often overlooked, Romblon’s cuisine is something we don’t normally see highlighted or featured enough in pop culture. But it’s something you shouldn’t miss when you visit. Much of the province’s land area is fertile and its surrounding waters are a gift that keeps on giving, ensuring that ingredients are fresh and abundant. Coconut and seafood are the most common ingredients.

Here are some of my favorite local delicacies. Description below, clockwise.

Sarsa and Utan na Langka Romblon

  • Sarsa , freshwater shrimps mixed with coconut and spices and then wrapped in coconut leaves.
  • Sihi , small shellfish often served ginataan (in coconut milk)
  • Gayabon , fresh taro leaves cooked in coconut milk, similar to laing
  • Utan na langka , chopped unripe jackfruit cooked in coconut milk

Traditional Filipino snacks are also peddled in the streets of most towns, the most common of which is suman , often rice or cassava cakes wrapped in banana or coconut leaves. Suman, of course, comes in different shapes and sizes. We were told that the signature Romblomanon suman is this (pictured below), a sweet and oily concoction made of sticky rice. Visually, texturally, and flavorally taste-wise, it’s very similar to Batangas’s sumang Taal, which isn’t really surprising since the two provinces are geographically and culturally close.

Suman Romblon

The most unfamiliar to me was nilidgid , which is made of ground corn and then wrapped in corn husk. Lidgid , I was told, means to grate.

Cobrador Island also takes absolute pride in its atis (custard apple), and the locals we talked to claim that the island produces the sweetest varieties.

And of course, don’t leave the province without stuffing your face with all sorts of seafood!

ROMBLON ISLAND Tourist Spots

Romblon Island is where you’ll find the municipality of Romblon, the capital and the economic and administrative hub of the province. The island also boasts pristine sandbars, secluded coves, white sand beaches, and some cultural attractions. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Fort San Andres

Fort San Andres Romblon

Fort San Andres sits atop San Antonio Hill between Barangay Capaclan and Barangay II, overlooking the harbor and the municipality of Romblon. Made from coral stones and limestones, it covers an area of almost 300 square meters with four turrets, one in each corner. Spanish-era cannons also adorn the fort grounds.

The fort was built in the mid-17th century as part of Spain’s military defense, ensuring the protection of its occupied lands and outposts from Dutch invaders and Moro pirates during the 80 Years War. The construction was overseen by the Portuguese friar, Fr. Agustin de San Pedro, nicknamed “El Padre Capitan”.

It was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2013. With a grant from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in 2012, the first two phases of restoration projects were finally completed in 2016.

This is the only remaining structure of the Twin Forts of the Romblon. The other tower, Fort Santiago, used to crown Calvary Hill but is now in ruins reclaimed by nature.

The best time to go is early morning and late afternoon during sunset.

Location: Fort San Andres Road, Poblacion, Romblon, Romblon Entrance Fee: FREE. Any amount of donation is much appreciated. Visiting Hours: It’s open 24/7, but the usual visiting schedule is from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Jump-Off Point: Thermopilas Street or Sabang Road

Talipasak Beach (San Pedro Beach)

Talipasak Beach San Pedro Resort Romblon

A secluded stretch of sand along the western edge of the island, Talipasak Beach offers a tranquil beach escapade. Located more than 12 kilometers from the town center, the beach can be reached by land via a narrow side road connected to the main highway.

On a clear sunny day, the sea dazzles in various shades of blue and green. Its cream-colored sand is a mixture of fine grains and crushed corals. A few meters from the shore, the waters offer underwater scenery perfect for snorkeling.

San Pedro Beach Resort is your main access to the beach. You can visit on a day tour or stay overnight. If you prefer to spend a night here, know that the resort amenities are basic and the cellphone signal can get patchy. You may bring your own food, but you can also ask the management for the menu.

Location: Barangay Ginablan, Romblon, Romblon Entrance Fee: P50 (Day Tour) Day Tour Hours: Monday – Sunday, 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM. The schedule might change, so it’s best to check for updates before going. How to Get to Talipasak Beach: From the brown center, you may hire a tricycle to take you to San Pedro Beach Resort. The fare starts at P200 for 2-3 pax. The travel time is 30-45 minutes.

Bonbon Beach

Bon Bon Beach is the most popular beach destination in the province, thanks mostly to its accessibility and sheer beauty.

Bon Bon Beach Romblon

What’s remarkable about Bonbon Beach is that it glazes two sides of a scenic cape that sticks out from the western coast of Romblon Island. These two beaches meet at the tip, which is adorned by a lengthy sandbar that stretches out to nearby uninhabited Bang-og Island at low tide.

From the town center, a short tricycle ride can take you westward to the jumpoff point. Although this secluded beach is hidden from view from the main road by the lush vegetation, it is actually just a short walk, less than 5 minutes, from there. There is a directional sign along the trail.

Note that this is a rugged beach, so no commercial establishments around the area, except a small guesthouse that also serves as the entry way to the beach. In the past, tourists and locals were able to access this paradise for free. But on our recent visit, we met the owner and learned from him that more amenities are being constructed in the area, so expect to pay an entrance fee soon.

Bon Bon Beach also faces west, making it another awesome sunset viewing spot.

Location: Bon Bon Beach, Barangay Lonos, Romblon, Romblon Jump-Off Point: Regional Highway 305/Romblon-Sawang-Agnipa-Sablayan Road in Barangay Lonos

Tiamban Beach

Located just south of Bon Bon Beach in Barangay Lonos, Tiamban Beach is another beach destination near the town center. It is much shorter strip than Bonbon Beach, but still pretty picturesque, blanketed with fine, light-colored sand. It’s also a spectacular sunset spot.

This is private property, but visitors are still allowed to enter for a fee. Tables and huts are available for rent as well as a dining place. If you want to save money on food, you can just bring your own meals, snacks, and drinks. The beach can be accessed via stairs down from the main road.

Location: Tiamban Beach, Barangay Lonos, Romblon, Romblon Entrance Fee: P50/head Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM. The schedule might change, so it’s best to check the updated opening hours before going. Jump-Off Point: Regional Highway 305/Romblon-Sawang-Agnipa-Sablayan Road in Barangay Lonos

Cajimos Marble Factory

Cajimos Marble Factory Romblon

According to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the province is blessed with an estimated 150 million metric tons of marble deposit that will last for up to about three hundred more years based on the current extraction rates. Naturally, the province’s economy relies heavily on the marble industry. Talk about bringing food to the table on a marble platter instead of silver.

Marble products range from small items (ashtrays, paperweights, etc.) to furniture sets (garden lounges, benches, dining tables, etc.) to construction materials (tiles, stones, chips, etc.). Much of the marble extraction, quarrying, and processing happen in the municipality of Romblon.

If you are interested in marble processing, you can go to Barangay Cajimos , one of the places in Romblon offering factory tours.

Location: Barangay Cajimos, Romblon, Romblon

Romblon Shopping Center

Romblon Marble Souvenirs

If you’re looking for souvenir items that are quintessentially Romblomanon, head over to the Romblon Shopping Center, which is a complex composed of several souvenir stores. True to its marble capital moniker, it is bursting with all things marble — from kitchen utensils to furniture pieces to religious figurines.

Souvenir staples like keychains and ref magnets are also available, also made of marble, at only P35 each. You can even have a name or text engraved on it for free. The most interesting are probably the lapida keychains (tombstone keychains), which you can give as pasalubong to your friends (or non-friends). You can also have them engrave a name on it.

Not too far away from the shopping complex stands the Romblon signage beside a big statue of a dolphin, both in marble.

Romblon Cathedral

More formally known as St. Joseph Cathedral , it is one of the most important landmarks in the province.

Hailed as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2001, it has roots that can be traced back to the 15th century. But much of the cathedral’s structure today were built or added much later, in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The fortress church was originally built to serve not only as a religious site but also as a defense structure against the Moro raids in the 17th century. Like the Twin Forts, the cathedral’s construction was supervised by the Portuguese Recollect priest Fr. Agustin de San Pedro.

It acquired its cathedral status when the Diocese of Romblon was founded in 1974. Two of the highlights are the belfry and the image of Sto. Niño de Romblon.

Location: Rizal Street, Barangay 1, Poblacion, Romblon, Romblon Mass Schedule: Wednesday – Friday, 6:00 PM / Saturday, 7:00 AM / Sunday, 6:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM & 5:00 PM. These schedules might change, so it’s best to check for updates before going.

TABLAS ISLAND Tourist Spots

Tablas Island is the largest in the archipelago. Despite its size and land area, most parts of the island are still untouched by urbanization, making it a haven for those who prefer nature tripping, adventure trails, island hopping (and beach hopping), scuba diving, and thrilling activities like cliff jumping.

Biaringan Zipline

Admire the scenic coastal views on the northeastern end of Tablas Island from above! the Biaringan Zipline is a two-way island-to-island zipline connecting Tablas to the smaller Biaringan Island. It is said to be the first of its kind in the country.

Biaringan Zipline Romblon Tablas

Spanning a total length of 1,350 meters, the zipline measures 700 meters from Station 1 to Station 2 and 650 meters from Station 2 to 3.

The jump-off station is at Long Beach in Barangay Mahabangbaybay in the municipality of San Agustin. Going to the highest station entails a 20-minute uphill trek, but the ride ends on the same side, closer to the beach.

Note that this attraction is weather-dependent. When we visited, we weren’t allowed to do it because the wind was super strong, so make sure to check the weather and coordinate with the management first before going.

Location: Barangay Mahabangbaybay, San Agustin, Romblon Rates: Adults (18 y/o and above), P350; Children (12-17 y/o), P300 (two-way) Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday, 8:00 AM – 11:30 AM & 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM. The schedule might change, so it’s best to check the updated opening hours before going. Jump-Off Point: Long Beach in Barangay Mahabangbaybay

Dad’s Bukid

Dad's Bukid Romblon

Romblon isn’t all about beaches! Perched on a mountainside, Dad’s Bukid offers a laid-back venue for those wanting to relax while enjoying the view of the Tablas highlands, particularly Pader forest, Mt. Kang-ayong and Mt. Ondok, curiously nicknamed Suso ng Dalaga.

Its highest point is at 360 meters ASL. You can take in the verdant scenery from the main viewing deck or from the log deck.

A pioneer ecotourism destination in the town of San Andres, the farm aims to promote the value of simple living through its “buhay-bukid” approach. It’s a place where you can practice the art of doing nothing!

Dad's Bukid Glamping Romblon

If you want to stay for a night, you can book one of the few glamping A-frame huts with basic amenities. Although they call it “glamping” huts, know that these are very basic, but a bedsheet will be provided. The setting and climate here are reminiscent of Tagaytay , so don’t forget to bring your jacket or anything to keep you warm during colder days when the place can be covered in fog too. The area has a weak cellphone signal or none at all.

Here are the rates:

  • Entrance Fee: P20/head
  • A-Frame Hut (w/ bedsheet): P600/2-3 pax
  • Tent Pitching: P1,000/tent
  • Treehouse: P1,000 (up to 8 pax)
  • Use of Cooking Amenities: P100.

You can bring your own food or you can avail of their meals for P120 per person per meal. A modest café offers snacks and drinks should you get hungry.

Location: Binoog Road, Barangay Victoria, San Andres, Romblon Opening Hours: Monday – Tuesday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM; Wednesday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM; Saturday – Sunday, 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Glamping Hours, 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM. The schedule might change, so it’s best to check the updated opening hours before going. Jump-Off Point: Binoog Road in Barangay Victoria

Marinor Mountainview Resort

Marinor Mountainview Resort Romblon

Another highland resort in the municipality of Ferrol is Marinor Mountainview in Brgy. Hinaguman. You can easily recognize it by the attention-grabbing wooden replica of the Eiffel Tower that straddles its entrance gate. As you climb to the main hall, you’ll notice another structure that looks like a ship poking out from the slope. MV Marinor, the sign reads.

And yes, rooms are also available for those who want to spend the night. Rates are from P1,400 to P1,600 per night. It also houses a restaurant.

But because it’s built on a hillside, Marinor Mountainview’s biggest asset is the view. From here, you can easily spot beyond the lush forest a glowing sandbar extending to a rocky islet. That, my friend, is Binucot Beach.

Location: Barangay Hinaguman, Ferrol, Romblon Entrance Fee: P30/head Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday, 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM. The schedule might change, so it’s best to check the updated opening hours before going. Jump-Off Point: Tablas Circumferential Road/Regional Highway 308

Binucot Beach

Binucot Beach Romblon

Located on the southwestern coast of Tablas Island in the town of Ferrol, Binucot Beach is an off-the-beaten-path beach destination. Its raw beauty is magnified by the rock formations, the coconut trees lining the beach, and its cream-colored berm made up of shingles, pebbles, and rocks. The shore is divided into two coves, clipped by a prominent lush rock islet, creating a visually arresting beachscape.

The waters vary in depth, so choose the shallow parts where it’s safe for kids to swim. The strength of the waves depends on the season — strong during the habagat and calm during the amihan. If you prefer deeper waters to properly swim in, you can easily find your spot too. The clear blue water is also great for snorkeling.

Binucot Beach is also a good spot for sunset viewing. You can ask the locals for the trails to the hilly viewpoints and a cave.

In 2009, it was established as a marine protected area due to the presence of rare and endangered species including the hard and soft corals. The beach also serves as a turtle sanctuary.

Location: Barangay Bunsoran/Hinaguman, Ferrol, Romblon Jump-Off Point: Tablas Circumferential Road/Regional Highway 308

Bel-at Point

Bel-at Point Romblon

If you walk farther south of Binucot Beach, you will reach a small quiet cove bookmarked by towering limestone cliffs. This is Bel-at point.

Sticking our from the center of the beach into the sea is a long wooded boardwalk that leads to a covered overwater gazebo, which serves as a viewing deck. This is one of the best spots to watch the sunset on Tablas Island.

If you come early for sunset, you may follow a trail and take a short trek up a hill for the wonderful view of Bel-at Point and Binucot Beach.

Location: Barangay Hinaguman, Ferrol, Romblon Jump-Off Point: Binucot Beach via Tablas Circumferential Road/Regional Highway 308

Looc Fish Sanctuary

Looc Fish Sanctuary

Nestled in the middle of Looc Bay, the Looc Fish Sanctuary is a protected marine area, encompassing a total area of 48 hectares. Established in 1999, it aims to protect the marine ecosystem of the area while also enriching its local livelihood. The sanctuary harbors about a hundred different marine species, including reef fishes, octopuses, eels, turtles, giant clams, and corals.

Registration and payment are done at Looc Pier. Get on a boat that will ferry you to the marine sanctuary in 5-10 minutes. The spacious floating dock or pontoon serves as a base for tourists where they can settle down, eat, and just chill.

Enjoy your time swimming with the colorful fishes or marvel at them while snorkeling. Fish feeding is allowed here, but we don’t recommend it as it could alter their behavior.

You can also see the old lighthouse nearby.

Location: Looc Bay, Looc, Romblon Entrance Fee: Adult, P100; Child, P50. The fees are inclusive of the roundtrip boat ride. Note that this might change soon as rate adjustments are in the works. Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday, 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The schedule might change, so it’s best to check the updated opening hours before going. Jump-Off Point: Looc Pier

Cabaliwan Peak

Situated in San Agustin near the border with San Andres, the Cabaliwan Peak is one of the noteworthy spots in the province if you are after breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding lush mountains. You can even see the mighty and mystical Mt. Guiting-Guiting on a clear day. The concrete road leading up to the spot snakes around the mountainous landscape, making a scenic and thrilling ride.

You can go farther off the concrete road, taking the rugged trails, to some of the view spots. The weather can be much cooler here, so make sure you have your jacket with you. Bask in the bucolic setting and make the most of your journey here by taking as many photos as you like.

Location: Barangay Bachawan, San Agustin, Romblon Jump-Off Point: Bachawan Barangay Road

SIBUYAN ISLAND Tourist Spots

Sibuyan Island is the second largest Romblon isle, next to Tablas. It harbors three of the province’s municipalities namely Cajidiocan, Magdiwang, and San Fernando. Because of its unspoiled landscape and largely intact forests and wildlife, the island is often dubbed the “Galapagos of Asia”. Its most remarkable natural landmark is Mount Guiting-Guiting (G2), the highest mountain in the province.

Here are some of the best tourist attractions in Sibuyan Island.

Cresta de Gallo

Cresta de Gallo Romblon

About 12 kilometers off the southern tip of Sibuyan Island, Cresta de Gallo may not be the easiest tropical paradise to reach but those who brave the long journey are rewarded with pristine white-sand beaches lapped up by cerulean waters.

The two islets forming Cresta de Gallo are linked by a sandbar, which surfaces when the tide is low. The other sandbars include one tailing the southern part of the larger isle and another extending from the northern tip of the smaller islet.

Note that the only structure on the island is the caretaker hut. You need to bring your own tent, food, and water if you are planning to spend the night here.

Location: San Fernando, Romblon Entrance Fee: P20-50, depends on your contact/boatman Boat Rates: The boat rates from San Fernando to Cresta de Gallo range from P2,500 to P3,000, depending on the size of the group and the duration of stay (day trip or overnight). Jump-Off Point: Barangay Azagra in San Fernando How to Get to Cresta de Gallo: From Tablas Airport, go to Odiongan Port. Ride a ferry to Sibuyan Island’s Magdiwang Port. From there, ride a jeepney to San Fernando. From San Fernando, take a boat to Cresta de Gallo. The boat ride lasts for about an hour, depending on the wave condition.

Mt Guiting-Guiting

Towering over Sibuyan Island, Mount Guiting-Guiting , nicknamed G2 by mountaineers, is the most prominent feature of the protected Mt. Guiting-Guiting Natural Park, which was founded in 1996. Standing 2,058 meters above sea level, it is hailed as the tallest mountain in the province. Its formidable peaks and unforgiving slopes pose great challenge to mountaineers, making it one of the most difficult to climb in the country.

In the vernacular, guiting-guiting means “jagged”, a shoutout to its most interesting feature: the jagged-shape ridge that resembles a saw or, if you’re into dinosaurs, the back of a stegosaurus!

The usual camping stop before proceeding to the summit is Mayo’s Peak . Usually, those who are not seasoned hikers opt to conclude their climb here, which is already a feat! The weather is quite volatile and affects the visibility and wind speed, especially when you are nearing the grassy summit.

We were told that the views at the summit and at Mayo’s Peak are breathtaking and humbling. And even if you weren’t able to reach the summit, the scenery all throughout the whole stretch of meandering lush trails is already a treat. Presently, hikers have two trail options — one from Magdiwang and another from San Fernando.

Location: Mt. Guiting-Guiting Natural Park, Sibuyan Island, Romblon Jump-Off Point: Magdiwang Trail or San Fernando Trail

Cantingas River

Flowing from the majestic Mount Guiting-Guiting down toward San Fernando Bay, Cantingas River is the island’s lifeline — its primary wellspring of water and electricity (via mini-hydro powerplant), contributing about 90% of the supply.

The most popular part of the river is Cantingas River Resort , which offers a cool respite surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. Swim in the clear calm waters. If you’re feeling adventurous, jump from any of the three concrete diving platforms at various heights: 5m, 7m, and 10m. Or if you’re just in a relaxing mood, just dip your feet while taking in the breathtaking views, including Mt. Guiting-Guiting in the background.

Amenities including kiosks, picnic tables, showers and toilets, and a parking area are available. You need to bring your own food and beverages. This place is popular among locals, especially on weekends.

Location: Barangay Taclobo, San Fernando, Romblon Entrance Fee: Locals, P20; Foreigners, P50 Visiting Hours: Monday – Sunday, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Jump-Off Point: Sibuyan Circumferential Road/Regional Highway 302. The narrow road leading to Cantingas River Resort is located near the bridge.

Within the island’s lush green nooks and crannies lie several cascades, each possessing its own charm and unique character. Here are some of them:

  • Busay Falls. Located in Barangay Panangcalan in the town of San Fernando, it features a tall column falling from a rocky cliff into a deep swimming hole. The area is surrounded by huge rocks and slabs.
  • Dagubdob Falls. Located in Barangay Espana in San Fernando, Dagubdob Falls is a four-tiered series of cascades and natural pools. Some pools are perfect for cliff diving too.
  • Cataja Falls. Located in Barangay Jao-asan in the town of Magdiwang, Cataja Falls is a majestic multi-level splash-machine. The best time to visit is during the wet season when the volume of water is high and the flow is strong. As of writing, it is temporarily closed.
  • Lambingan Falls. Located in Barangay Silum in Magdiwang, Lambingan Falls is small compared to other falls in the area, but this is one of the most popular too due to its accessibility from the main road.
  • Cawa-Cawa Falls. Located in Barangay Weste, within the ancestral domain of the Sibuyan Mangayn Tagabukid, in the town of Cajidiocan, Cawa-Cawa Falls is a three-level cascade with three kawa-shaped natural pools. The cascades are not really high, but the depths of the pools are good for cliff diving too.

How to Get to Romblon

For the past few years, the only mode of transportation to the archipelagic province is by sea via Batangas Port or Manila Port. But that has changed recently! On September 24, AirSWIFT , the only boutique airline in the Philippines, had its inaugural flight to Romblon from NAIA’s Terminal 4. Traveling to the province is now faster and more convenient.

Airswift Romblon Inaugural Flight

The Manila-Romblon (Tablas) route is available twice a week — Tuesdays and Saturdays. The journey takes about one hour and 15 minutes.

Airswift offers four types of airfare packages: Promo, Basic, Value, and Premium.

  • Promo has unlimited free rebooking (subject to fare difference) and 7KGs carry-on baggage. However, since it’s a promo, limited seats are available for this package.
  • Basic lets you rebook 5x free of charge (fare difference may apply), but it does not allow refunding and rerouting. No check-in baggage allowance, but you have free 7KGs for carry-on baggage.
  • Value offers 10KGs check-in baggage allowance on top of the 7KGs carry-on baggage. This also allows 5x rebooking for free (fare difference may apply), but it does not allow rerouting.
  • Premium has the same perks as the Value package BUT with a check-in baggage allowance of 20KGs instead of just 10KGs.

To check flight schedules or to book, visit AirSWIFT’s official website .

Thanks for sharing. We have lived on Tablas Island for 10 years (we moved from Angeles City because we didn’t want to live in a busy and crowded environment).

January-March are our Fiesta months. Lots of activities and events for people of all ages.

What I have noticed is that people who are more interested in seeking physical adventures (biking, hiking, trekking, and outdoor activities) come to Tablas Island for the fresh air, secluded beaches, beautiful ocean vistas.

Lots of people come for the fresh food and small music venues.

I used to operate a kiteboarding training center, and a paragliding adventure tour (before Covid). Now we just operate an organic farm with fresh organic chickens, ducks, turkey, ostrich and happy pigs (people come from other islands to buy our livestock because it is extremely clean and the animals eat organic). Our produce are: bananas, coconuts, pili nuts (hence Pili Nut Farms), mango, papaya, guava, dragon fruit, guyabano (soursop), lansones, star apple, melon, butternut squash, egg plant, string beans, cinco mas, and lots of herbs, spices, and teas (my wife’s grandmother was a tribal “medicine woman” – aka herbal medicine healer).

It’s very safe – crime is pretty much non-existent, and the people are kind and personable.

There are several places (bed and breakfasts) that you neglected to share located in the Hinaguman, Looc, and Santa Fe towns. I personally like the Pili Beach resort on the south side of the island.

Who comes to Tablas Island? People who appreciate privacy, beauty, and a peaceful environment.

Continued Success with your blog.

I am relatively new to Tablas, but my wife has lived here all her life. I am not so familiar with the whole of the island yet, but wanted to mention a couple of other spots. Canyayo, Santa Fe has a couple of nice resorts located there. We actually had our wedding reception at Balisa Beach Resort. They do not have a web site, but you can find them on Facebook. Just down the way from them is the Beach House. Just a couple of small resorts, but they fit the aesthetic of Tablas. Small, quiet, and out of the way places.

The province of Romblon comprises a group of islands located in the center of the Philippine archipelago in Luzon region, specifically to the south of Marinduque. It is also close to some of the best islands in the Philippines  and Visayas tourist spots , such as Boracay Island .

Romblon is best known as the "Marble Capital of the Philippines" due to the abundance of marble found here, which has become one of the main sources of livelihood for the locals. Aside from the locals' high-quality marble sculptures, travelers to Romblon will also find stunning white sand beaches , historic sites, and a towering mountain in this underrated Philippine destination. Boasting an array of unspoiled natural beauty, Romblon is easily a perfect getaway destination for travelers planning an off-the-beaten-path  vacation in the Philippines .

Hillside in Romblon

To help you get started on your trip to the peaceful province, we've rounded up the best Romblon tourist spots in this article. All of these attractions are located throughout the islands that make up the province, making it an ideal destination for island hopping in the Philippines . While the majority of them are situated in the three major islands of Tablas, Sibuyan, and Romblon, others are located in hidden pockets of the province.

Bang-og Island from Bonbon Beach

Romblon is 264KM away from the Philippine capital of Manila . The best way to get to Romblon province is to travel by air from Manila as you can fly directly to Tablas, one of the major islands. If you want to arrive in the province's capital that is also called Romblon, your best option is to ride a ferry instead from Batangas.

  • Book transportation going to Romblon

Before traveling, make sure to check the updated  Philippines travel requirements and confirmation of your accommodation or online trip booking to ensure a smooth entry into the province. Some travel booking sites also offer Philippine tour packages to Romblon that are already inclusive of transportation.

View from Bonbon Beach

Taking a flight from Manila to Romblon is the fastest way to get to the province as CebGo offers direct flights to Tablas Island. However, if you want to get to Romblon town, you will have to take a separate ferry from Tablas to Romblon Island. It is also best to check for flights weeks before you plan on traveling as the airline only flies to Tablas Airport three times a week.

If you don't mind a longer travel time, you can also take a ferry to Romblon. From Manila, you will need to travel to Batangas Pier first. You can reach the pier by riding a bus from Buendia, Pasay, or Cubao terminals. From the pier, you can take various ferries, such as those operated by the Montenegro Shipping Lines, straight to Romblon town.

Lahung Rock Formation

Photo by Reggae Vibes De Romblon

Located along the southwestern coast of Romblon Island is a beautiful stone arch carved by the sea currents and the winds that blow through this area. This arch is known as the Lahung Rock Formation and is one of the best spots on the island to watch the sunset. Standing close to this natural wonder is the 62-foot-tall Apunan Point Lighthouse that you can easily see from the rock formation's viewpoint.

When the sun starts to dip behind the horizon, it casts both the Lahung Rock Formation and the Apunan Point Lighthouse in a warm shade of orange, making for a picturesque moment. If you view the sun at a certain angle, you will be able to line the sun inside the arch, making for a beautiful photo.

14. St. Joseph Cathedral

St. Joseph Cathedral

The St. Joseph Cathedral, which is locally known as the Romblon Cathedral, is a Baroque-style church that sits along Rizal Street in the provincial capital of the province. Portuguese Recollect members began construction of the cathedral in the 15th century. However, the church could not stand natural disasters and had to undergo reconstructions and repairs throughout the years.

The majority of the current structure that you will see today is made out of bricks made from corals, which were common for the architecture of Romblon at the time. The facade also features white finishes and three arches. Above the main arch is a small, carved-out area that holds a religious statue as if to greet parishioners who come to celebrate mass here.

As you step inside, you will also find that the interior is made mostly of coral bricks. Adorning the back of the cathedral's interior wall is a large altar made out of beautiful marble and other local materials that house a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Local swimming above the Blue Hole

Photo by San Agustin Romblon Tourism

Off the northeasternmost tip of Tablas Island is a vertical tunnel called the Blue Hole, one of the best places for diving in Romblon. Its entrance sits about 7 meters from the water's surface and is around 8 meters wide. From the surface, you can easily float above the hole and find yourself staring at a black tunnel that appears to have no end in sight.

  • Read our article on the best diving spots in the Philippines

However, the best way to see the Blue Hole is by scuba diving, which is one of the must-try activities in the Philippines . If you are an experienced scuba diver, you can make arrangements with local diving centers and resorts to swim down into the Blue Hole.

The tunnel goes on for around 27 to 32 meters, so make sure to prepare accordingly. As you swim inside, you will come across multiple corals growing along the tunnel's walls and several species of fish. After reaching the end of the cave, you will exit onto a large opening that leads to the reef, where you can spot shrimps and lobsters on the seafloor.

Another well-loved gem on Romblon Island is the Talipasak Beach on the eastern coast. This secluded beach is managed by the Talipasak Beach Resort, which is also known as the San Pedro Beach Resort. It offers a quieter escape for travelers who want to enjoy time by the sea undisturbed by large crowds, making it one of the best places in the Philippines for family vacations .

The sand here is soft to the touch and perfect for a barefoot stroll to help ease your mind. Coupled with the azure waters that lap the shore and the verdant greeneries that border the beach, this little hideaway is a perfect spot for some "me" time. After going for a swim, you can enjoy a cup of coffee at the beachside cafe that has set up wooden benches under the nearby trees.

Busay Falls

Busay Falls is one of the top Tablas tourist spots that display the province's diverse outdoors. This cascade is situated in the town of Dubduban on the northeastern side of Tablas Island. Since it is situated among a thick group of trees, you will need to go on a short trek to reach this refreshing spot. Make sure to wear comfortable and non-slippery footwear as the trail to the falls is a mix of different-sized rocks and soil paths.

  • Check out our list of the most scenic waterfalls in the Philippines

After making your way through the forest, you will finally see the multi-level cascade. While the waterfalls are not as wide as most major cascades in the country, they have become a favored spot for a refreshing dip amongst locals thanks to the cool waters that fall into natural basins. Wade into the natural pools for a relaxing swim and make your way to the cascades for a quick photo op as well.

Travelers who enjoy snorkeling and getting to see schools of fish up close can find what they're looking for at the Looc Bay Marine Sanctuary. This conservation area is located off the coast of Looc town in the southwestern region of Tablas Island. It is also among the most frequented tourist attractions in Romblon and is a must-visit spot when going on a Tablas Island tour. The sanctuary sits on the edge of the Looc Reef, a 48-hectare marine reserve home to several fish species.

After boarding a boat from Looc town, travelers will step onto a large floating hut made of wood and bamboo. The hut features dedicated fish feeding areas from where you can safely toss food into the sea and later watch the fish eat. Aside from feeding them from the hut, you can change into swimming clothes and put on a life vest and snorkeling gear to hop into the water with them. Take a moment to peek under the surface to see the ecosystem of vibrant corals and colorful fish.

Fort San Andres

Photo by Romblon Provincial Tourism Office

Fort San Andres stands in the coastal Romblon town and overlooks the local port. Portuguese religious leaders started constructing the fortress on San Antonio HIll in the 15th century along with another stronghold called Fort Santiago atop Calvary Hill.

The two were known as the Twin Forts of Romblon and were also used to keep watch over important points of entry into the coastal town. However, Fort Santiago later fell to ruin as time passed. Similar to other historical spots in the Philippines that were built at the time, Fort San Andres was created using coral stones and bricks.

Today, travelers can easily reach Fort San Andres by walking from the town's Freedom Park, about 270 miles away. Inside the fort's premises, you will also be able to climb atop its tower to get a panoramic view of Romblon's coast with the lush hillside in the back. As architectural landmarks in the Philippines and Romblon, the National Museum of the Philippines recognized Fort San Andres and the ruins of Fort Santiago as National Cultural Treasures.

8. Tiamban Beach

Tiamban Beach

Tiamban Beach is one of the notable Romblon beaches. It is situated on the northwestern part of Romblon Island and is about 5KM from the town proper. It boasts an idyllic atmosphere, powdery white sand, and clear waters that are ideal for a beach getaway. Feel free to bring some beach towels and some food with you for a scenic seaside picnic. Afterward, you can soak up some sun on the smooth sand or enjoy a stroll along the shore.

  • Read our article on the best beaches in the Philippines

If you plan on staying the night, there are a handful of resorts in the area that you can choose from, with the most notable being the Tiamban Beach Resort. If you're in the mood to spend the night under the stars, you can also opt to rent a tent and camp on the beach so you can listen to the waves as you drift off to sleep.

Cantingas River

Cutting through the southwestern region of Sibuyan Island is the Cantingas River, one of the cleanest inland rivers in the Philippines. The river is situated in the Cantingas River Resort, which also manages and maintains it, and is only about 4 KM away from the town of San Fernando.

One of the best things to do here is to take a dip in the clear running water as you take in the serene ambiance of the surroundings. Bordering the riverside are lively trees that help keep the air clean. Aside from the trees, you will also find a multi-level cement diving platform at one part of the river.

While the parts of the river close to the shore are shallow, the center descends into depths of at least 8 feet. This makes it a perfect spot for platform diving as you will not touch the riverbed no matter from which of the three heights you choose to jump from. Apart from being a popular spot for locals and travelers, the river also provides clean energy to the majority of the island through a nearby hydroelectric power plant along the river.

Tinagong Dagat, or "Hidden Sea" in English, is a saltwater lake situated in the northernmost tip of Tablas Island and is a top Calatrava, Romblon tourist spot. To get here, you will need to ride a pump boat from the Calatrava town's port. The lake is surrounded by limestone cliffs covered with thick foliage that makes it impossible to see from a boat, hence its name. After docking by the shore, a short walk will lead you straight to this beautiful lake that boasts clear blue water.

Thanks to its remote location and the natural cover provided by the cliffs and trees, this lake has become an ideal spot to relax without having to worry about crowds. You can also dip your feet into the cool waters as you listen to the sound of the waves on the other side of the cliffs.

Thrill-seekers can also go cliff diving from designated areas of the limestone cliffs that surround the lake. While it seems that the lake is separated from the sea, it actually connects to the sea through an underwater tunnel which allows the saltwater to come into the lake.

Cobrador Island sits to the north of Romblon Island. To get here, you will have to rent a pump boat from Romblon town's port or join an island hopping Romblon tour that includes stops at the nearby Alad and Logbon Islands. Cobrador Island's main draw is its white sand beach that is also locally known as Nogoso Beach.

As Cobrador is a remote island with only a small group of locals, this spotless stretch of sand goes on for miles and is free from any commercial establishments. Along with boasting a clean coast, the island also features pristine waters that are perfect for a refreshing swim under the sun.

If you brought snorkeling gear, feel free to dip under the surface to discover the fish swimming close to the beach. You can also lay down on the beach and enjoy the island's laidback atmosphere as you soak up some sun. If you plan on staying longer in this paradise-like place, there are several homestays in the area.

4. mount guiting-guiting .

Mt. Guiting-Guiting stands at around 2,058 meters above sea level in the heart of Sibuyan Island. Guiting-Guiting is the Romblomanon word for "jagged," which refers to the jagged peaks on the mountain. Due to its rocky terrain, it is classified by Filipino hikers as one of the toughest climbs in the country as the trail to the summit involves rock climbing with the use of ropes. It is also among the most notable tourist spots in Luzon for hikers.

  • Read our guide on hiking in the Philippines

On average, the hike to the peak will take about 4 days. However, hikers who take the time to conquer this mountain are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the nearby steep ridges and the vast forests covering Sibuyan Island.

Aside from being considered one of the best mountains to hike in the Philippines , Mt. Guiting-Guiting is also a crucial wildlife reserve and a significant area for Romblon tourism. It is home to about 54 endemic plants and a diverse group of animals, such as rare rodent and bat species.

To set foot on this unspoiled white sand islet, you will have to take a boat from San Fernando town on Sibuyan Island. If you look out from any point on the island, you will only see the azure waters go on for miles.

Aside from a small forest on one end of the island and a patch of greenery on the other, the island is tranquil and free of any commercial stores. The most eye-catching feature of the island, however, is the spotless sandbar that rises in between the azure waters and connects both ends of the islands.

It is also considered one of the best sandbars in the Philippines thanks to its remote location that offers a relaxing escape from the usual Philippine tourist spots . If you want to enjoy the peace and quiet of the island for more than a day, you can set up camp at the local campgrounds, a welcome change from most beach resorts in the Philippines .

2. Carabao Island

Carabao Island

Carabao Island sits to the south of Tablas Island and to the north of Boracay Island, one of the best places to visit in the Philippines . It boasts a handful of powdery beaches, caves, and cliffs that are ideal for cliff diving. Among the beautiful shores you'll find here are Lanas Beach and San Jose Beach, which boast white sand that rivals Boracay's own White Beach . Meanwhile, Cathedral Cave on the island's eastern coast stands out as the top spot for cliff diving here.

ROMBLON TOURIST SPOTS – FAQ

Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions from first-time visitors.

HOW TO GET TO ROMBLON ISLAND?

To be honest, it’s a little bit tricky and time-consuming figuring out how to get to Romblon but that’s all part of the adventure. On that note, it confirms the fact even more as to why it is one of the best-kept island paradises in the Philippines !

The only way to reach the island is by boat and the most common route is from San Augustin Pier on the east coast of Tablas Island.

The pump boat from Tablas Island to Romblon Island departs daily from San Augustin Port on Tablas Island at 8:00 am and 1:00 pm. The journey over to the island takes around 1 to 2 hours depending on the sea conditions.

The cost of the boat trip from Tablas to Romblon is 100 pesos and an additional 10 pesos terminal fee.

If you are heading back to Tablas Island from Romblon Island, the daily departures are the same, leaving at 8 am and 1 pm from the Romblon Motorboat Terminal, not the main port of Romblon.

BY PLANE & BOAT

There are only a few flights per week to Tablas Island arriving at Romblon Airport (TBH) in Alcantra, connecting domestic travelers from Manila.

From Tablas Airport, you can ride in the back of a jeepney to San Augustin Pier and take the boat over to Romblon from here.

The journey from Tablas Airport to San Augustin Pier is around 1 hour and the cost for the jeepney is approximately 100 pesos.

HOW TO GET AROUND?

There are a couple of options for getting around Romblon Island and they are by scooter, habal habal, tricycle, or jeepney.

You can rent a scooter for as little as 300 pesos per day and make your own way around all of the Romblon tourist spots at your own pace. The best place to rent a scooter is via your accommodation, or in Romblon town.

If you are not confident driving a scooter, the other option is to hail a tricycle or habal habal (motorbike taxi) along the main roads on the island. For a 15-minute drive, you can expect to pay around 50-100 pesos.

hey mondo 1

We all know accidents can happen and having Heymondo Insurance will save you thousands of dollars if something goes wrong.

Heymondo offers low-cost Travel Insurance to keep you covered on all your adventures.

BEST TIME TO VISIT ROMBLON ISLAND?

The best time to visit Romblon Island, weather-wise, is between April and July when temperatures are hot and there is barely any rainfall. This is also high season in Romblon, so expect to see more tourists during these months.

I recommend planning your Romblon itinerary on the shoulder months of the high season between November and March which sees a bit of rainfall but usually only lasts for a couple of hours and the rest of the day is sunny.

Try to avoid the typhoon season which is typically between August and October.

12 BEST ROMBLON TOURIST SPOTS

Now that we’ve covered all the logistics of how to get to this island paradise, let’s get to the fun stuff!

So, without further ado, here is a complete list of the 12 Best Romblon Tourist Spots to help you craft together your own itinerary.

BONBON BEACH

Bonbon Beach Romblon is arguably the most beautiful beach in the Philippines , boasting a unique sandbar that looks far too good to be true!

From the main town, it’s a 5-minute drive to Bonbon Beach Romblon or approximately a 45-minute walk along the coastal road.

Bonbon Beach isn’t visible at the jump-off point, though it’s no more than a 5-minute walk along the coastline and around the corner to where the sandbar will reveal itself.

Bonbon Beach features a glistening white sandbar stretching from the mainland to the uninhabited island known as Bang-og. On either side of the Bonbon sandbar are waist-deep turquoise waters that are utterly inviting and the perfect opportunity to take a dip.

Bonbon Beach is, in fact, a privately owned beach by one of the locals, though tourists and local residents are free to roam around the area providing everyone respects the land by taking only photos and leaving only footprints.

At low tide, Bonbon Beach sandbar is completely exposed, making it possible to walk across to Bang-og Island and explore the beach over there.

On high tide, however, Bonbon Beach is only partially exposed so make sure to be aware of the tides if you plan on crossing over the sandbar to Bang-og Island. You wouldn’t want to get stuck over there unless you are well-equipped.

One of the best parts about Bonbon Beach is that there are no resorts or any signs of development which is a great thing, in my opinion. Just sugary white sands, azure waters, and incredible views of the island and the neighboring Tablas Island.

If you have the time, I recommend visiting Bonbon Beach for sunset with a beer in hand and also at sunrise with your early morning coffee. It’s hands down one of the most peaceful Romblon tourist spots!

If you have a Drone Camera  I highly recommend flying it at Bonbon Beach as it looks even better from the sky!

FORT SAN ANDRES

Fort San Andres is an iconic landmark and a popular Romblon Island tourist spot for people with an interest in history and Spanish architecture dating as far back as the 15th century.

Not only will you get a taste of history at Fort San Andres but you’ll also be treated to a panoramic view that overlooks the main town and the magnificent bay.

Fort San Andres is located smack bang in the middle of Romblon town on top of the hill and you can either drive right up to the top parking lot on a scooter or take the stairs that lead up the hillside from Freedom Park.

It’s not a very large fortress by any means but it is every bit impressive. Stone walls and statues welcome you at the entrance to the fort and once inside, you can roam around the grounds and step inside the fort itself.

Fort San Andres is divided into square sections within the walls that you can navigate your way through, marveling at the detailed stone architecture. It’s also possible to climb to the top of the watchtowers along the front wall which is the highest point of the fort.

From the top, you can enjoy extensive views of the bay, the township, and the neighboring islands in the Romblon Province.

A short visit to Fort San Andres is not to be missed on your Romblon tourist spots list!

KIPOT RIVER

Kipot River is a fun-fuelled adventure to be had on Romblon Island and it’s a nice change away from the beaches and the township.

This isn’t the everyday river that you might expect to see, it’s a slot canyon featuring a mini set of falls of fresh running water, a large natural swimming hole, and some cliff-jumping spots!

Kipot River is located on the southeast corner of the island in the Sablayan region. It’s a little tricky to find but don’t be hesitant to ask the locals in the area for directions. I know for sure it’s along Romblon-Sawang-Sablayan Rd and the jump-off point is approximately 1.5 km inland from Sablayan Point.

When I visited, I was staying at Reggae Vibes Hostel , and the owner Rose is always down for an adventure so she came along and showed us the way.

From the jump-off point, it’s a bit of a steep walk down the sides of the valley through some farmland and there are makeshift stairs to somewhat make it less sketchy going down.

At the end of the jungle trail, it opens up to a large natural swimming hole and the Kipot River Canyon is in full sight. You can either swim up the river through the canyon to find the small set of falls or if you want an adrenalin rush you can climb the rocks on the left-hand side and take the leap off the 3-meter cliff into the river.

The water is crystal clear so you can easily see the depth of Kipot River making it easy to see exactly where to aim your jump. Once you’re in the water, it’s a short swim to the end of the canyon to a small waterfall and you can spend some time here exploring the area.

REGGAE VIBES BEACH

If you end up staying at Reggae Vibes Hostel you can’t miss the opportunity to go for a swim and snorkel around the coral gardens just offshore. Rose said many turtles frequent the waters here at Reggae Vibes Beach so it’s a good reason to grab a snorkel set and go on the hunt.

Even if you’re not a guest at Reggae Vibes the doors are always open for anyone who wants to hang out. There are also a few sets of snorkeling gear that you can use at the hostel.

It’s no more than a 30-meter swim from the shore to reach the coral gardens and there is so much underwater exploring to do here and hopefully, there will be turtles!

I was unfortunate and did not spot any turtles in the morning I went snorkeling at Reggae Vibes Beach but the size of the corals and the abundance of marine life made up for it.

LIBTONG FALLS

Libtong Falls is one of the only waterfalls on Romblon Island and a worthy adventure to be added to your list of things to do in Romblon Island.

Libtong Falls can be found on the very southernmost tip of the island. From Reggae Vibes hostel, it’s exactly a 1.5km drive to the east and you’ll find the jump-off point which is a causeway where the river meets the ocean.

Before you make the effort to visit Libtong Falls it’s best to ask a local whether or not there will be any water flow. I say this because when I went there was not enough rainfall during that time and the waterfall was non-existent, just a few stagnant rock pools. So best to double-check with someone first.

From the jump-off point, it’s a short 10-minute walk along a jungle trail at the back of someone’s house to reach Libtong Falls. I don’t have much to write about this spot apart from what I saw, which was dry rock and stagnant rock pools…

I do hope that you will have better luck than I did at this attraction during your visit, just make sure the water is flowing before you go.

SAN PEDRO BEACH

San Pedro Beach, also known as Talipasak Beach, is yet another one of the best beaches in Romblon which is tucked away in a small cove and surrounded by lush rainforest. Trust me, San Pedro Beach cannot be missed on your itinerary!

Situated on the island’s western tip, San Pedro Beach is the definition of paradise! From the main road, a smaller road cuts down the hillside and comes to a dead-end, which is the jump-off point.

San Pedro Beach (Talipasak Beach) is a private beach area attached to the San Pedro Beach Resort though the doors are always open for day-trippers. There is a small entrance fee of 50 pesos for outside visitors.

The stretch of sand down at Talipasak Beach is no more than 100 meters long and it’s fringed by a mix of coconut palms and lush green forest. It’s one of the dreamiest beaches I have come across and I’m sure the images below will prove that!

A coral reef wraps around this westernmost tip of the island which is a great opportunity to grab a snorkel set and see what you can find.

You could easily spend half a day beach bumming at San Pedro Beach if you have the time. It is one of the most peaceful Romblon tourist spots you will find on the island.

TIAMBAN BEACH

Tiamban Beach is an absolute dream location and I was surprised that its shores were almost completely empty during my visit!

Tiamban Beach is right around the corner from the more popular Bonbon Beach which is probably why it often gets overlooked.

Do note that this is a secluded beach area attached to the Tiamban Beach Resort though outside guests are welcome to come and enjoy this stretch of sand for a small fee of 50 pesos.

This particular beach lies in a cove protected from the winds and the water is super calm and there are no currents close to its shores.

The sand at Tiamban Beach is glistening white and the ocean is as crystalline as it could possibly get, all of which is fringed by swaying coconut palms over the water’s edge! I will now let the photos do the talking.

LIGHTHOUSE VIEWPOINT

There are a few lighthouses dotted around the coastlines but there is one in particular that I recommend checking out.

The Lighthouse Viewpoint that I am talking about can be found on the easternmost tip of the island along Lamao – Calabogo – Sablayan Road. As you are driving along the coastal road it’s hard to miss this tall white lighthouse on the side of the road.

From the jump-off point, you can traverse across the hillside to a rocky outcrop that sits out past the cliffs. This viewpoint you want to get to offers extensive views of Romblon’s east coast and the nearby Alfonso Island.

On a clear day, you’ll also be able to spot Sibuyan Island off in the distance which is another landmass that belongs to the archipelago of islands in the Romblon Province.

If you’re an early riser, the Lighthouse Viewpoint would be an epic spot to watch the sunrise due to its location facing east.

MARBLE QUARRY & SHOPS

You may not yet know this about Romblon but it happens to be the ‘Marble Capital of the Philippines’ and is home to several small quarries and souvenir shops selling hand-crafted marble goods.

The majority of the Romblon marble quarries are found in the northeastern areas of the island and you can visit at any time of the day to see what it’s all about.

At first, I didn’t plan on visiting the Marble Quarry during my visit but I happened to stumble across it on my lap around the island. Furthermore, I am glad I did get the chance to check it out as it was more interesting than I intended.

I spotted one of the Romblon marble quarries on the side of the road and stopped to see what was going on.

There were men hard at work excavating the marble rocks and loading them into the back of small dump trucks. A little further down the road, there are marble workshops where the rocks are dumped and sorted into piles.

Local craftsmen can be found along the roadside, sculpting away at the marble rocks that come in an array of colors such as white, green, pink, red, and black. They are seriously talented at what they can do, carving such fine detailed statues, tables, vases, and all other sorts of marble ornaments.

There is no shortage of Marble Shops to buy yourself a souvenir or a gift for someone else and know that it was handmade right here on the island.

SAINT JOSEPH CATHEDRAL ROMBLON

The Saint Joseph Cathedral is a notable religious site in the center of the town. It’s considered to be the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Romblon Province and one of the colonial churches declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2001.

Built sometime in the 15th century, the Saint Joseph Cathedral Romblon is well preserved boasting beautiful architectural elements such as stained glass windows, religious paintings, antique ornaments, and a large bell inside the tower made from copper.

Be sure to add this Romblon tourist spot to your itinerary, even if it’s just for a short visit to take a couple of happy snaps.

COBRADOR ISLAND SEA TURTLE SANCTUARY

Cobrador Island boasts half a dozen white sand beaches and is home to a protected Sea Turtle Sanctuary.

It’s quite easy to reach Cobrador Island by boat and you can either head over for a few hours or spend an entire day beach hopping around Cobrador Island.

From Romblon, you can find a friendly local who owns a boat to take you over to Cobrador Island for the day.

Depending on your bartering skills, you can expect to pay anywhere between 1000 and 1500 pesos total for the boat trip over to Cobrador Island. Best to gather a small group of people to join in on the adventure so you can split the cost of the boat between you.

The boat journey to Cobrador Island takes around 30 to 40 minutes and it will drop you off directly in the cove where the Cobrador Sea Turtle Sanctuary is located.

If you don’t have your own snorkeling gear you can rent them in Romblon town or perhaps from one of the local residents who live on Cobrador Island.

Within seconds of jumping headfirst into the ocean, we spotted a turtle feeding on seagrass in the shallows. It was a little bit startled by us and decided to take off into deeper waters so it’s best to make minimal movement when you come across a turtle to not scare it away.

Although the first turtle we saw got away, we encountered another 4 or 5 turtles cruising around while snorkeling at the Sea Turtle Sanctuary on Cobrador Island.

There is just something so majestic about sea turtles that fascinates me so whenever there is an opportunity to swim with them I can’t say no!

You definitely won’t regret this awesome adventure so make sure to note it down as a must-do activity on your list of things to do in Romblon Island.

TITANIC BEACH

Last but not least on this itinerary is Titanic Beach, the unofficial name I have given it. I think the name is fitting because at this location you will find a much smaller-scale recreation of the Titanic.

Titanic Beach is a stone’s throw away from Tiamban Beach along the same stretch of coastline. In fact, the easiest way to get here is by walking along the beach from Tiamban for a few minutes till you reach Titanic Beach.

Alternatively, there is another entry point to Titanic Beach from the road which is down a set of concrete steps beside Nonok Beach Resort. Again, this is a secluded beach area attached to the resort, but guests are welcome to visit outside.

I found it comical to see a concrete version of the Titanic down by the shoreline but it is also a beautiful beach area to go for a swim or chill out under one of the straw umbrellas.

And of course, you must get a picture on the bow of the boat to recreate the famous scene from the Titanic film.

ROMBLON ITINERARY | The Philippines Best Kept Secret

Romblon itinerary for the best Romblon tourist spots

The Philippines has become extremely popular in the last few years, with tourists flocking to places like El Nido , Cebu and Siargao . But one place that hasn’t shot to international fame (yet) is Romblon Island. This is without a doubt, the hidden gem of the Philippines. Follow our Romblon itinerary to discover why this island is so incredible and why it should be a big part of your Philippines adventure.

Not only is Romblon Island a spectacular place to visit, but you almost never have to share these amazing Romblon tourist spots with any other people. At most of the places we visited, including Bon Bon Beach , there were only ever a small handful of people there, if any at all.

In a world where travel has never been so affordable and accessible, and very few places remain untouched, Romblon Island is a revelation. It feels like much more of an adventure coming here with so few tourists and the difficulty of organizing a trip here makes you appreciate it even more.

While we enjoyed places like Siargao just as much, if not more than Romblon, there was no other comparison in terms of the sense of adventure we got from visiting such an untouched destination. We recommend trying to add our Romblon itinerary into your trip around the Philippines to discover all of the amazing places this island has to offer.

How to Get to Romblon

Romblon can be quite confusing as there is both the province of Romblon and Romblon Island. Romblon province, which is just north of Borocay, is made up of a number of different islands which includes Romblon Island as well as other islands such as Tablas, Sibuyan and Carabao .

It is an extreme cliché to say, it’s not the destination but the journey that makes an awesome trip, but this is definitely the case for Romblon. There is no easy way to get here as there is no airport on the island, and we hope that this is the case for a long time to come. The difficulty in getting here keeps the crowds away and ensures that Romblon Island maintains its charm.

Romblon island town centre

From Caticlan Airport :

In order for us to get to Romblon, we flew into Caticlan Airport (the main airport for Boracay) and took three separate ferries, exploring the different islands along the way.

From Caticlan, we took a ferry to Carabao Island and then another ferry to Tablas Island. The ferry from Carabao took us to the southern tip of Tablas Island at the port of Santa Fe and cost 100 PHP ($2 USD).

From there, it is several hours in a jeepney (local Filipino bus) or in a tricycle to reach the port of San Agustin in northern Tablas where you catch the ferry to Romblon Island. Our ferry to Romblon departed at 1pm and cost 100 PHP ($2 USD).

At the time, this was the last scheduled ferry to Romblon for the day. Ferry information for this region is hard to come by and best to check with the locals or with your guesthouse.

Alternatively, there is also a ferry from Caticlan to Odiongan, a town on the west coast of Tablas Island. Once you arrive in Odiongan you will need to catch a jeepney up to San Agustin to catch the ferry to Romblon.

From Tablas Island :

The “easiest” way to get to Romblon Island is to fly into Tablas Island at Tugdan Airport. From there, catch a jeepney or trike to the port of San Agustin and then take the ferry to Romblon, as outlined above.

From Manila:

There is an overnight ferry that runs from Manilla to Romblon Island if you wish to travel this way. Depending on the ferry you catch, there is often a stop at Tablas Island before continuing on to Romblon.

From Sibuyan Island:

At least one ferry per day departs Sibuyan Island for Romblon. Our ferry from Sibuyan departed from Ambulong Port in the north at 8:30am and cost 200 PHP ($4 USD).

Getting Around Romblon Island

The cheapest and easiest way to get around the island is to rent a scooter or motorbike. It was actually quite difficult to find somewhere to rent a scooter and it took us almost an hour of searching before we finally found someone willing to rent to us. We ended up renting from Old Sailor Restaurant right in the heart of Romblon town.

If you have experience and are comfortable driving a semi-automatic motorbike it is slightly easier to find a rental shop. Scooter rental costs around 500 PHP ($10 USD) per day, while motorbike rental costs around 300 PHP ($6 USD) per day. This was slightly more expensive than everywhere else we rented in the Philippines, but there are not many options here.

If you don’t feel comfortable riding a scooter you can pay for a tricycle to take you to the different Romblon tourist spots, but this will be more expensive, especially as some of the beaches are quite far from the town centre.

Best Time to Visit Romblon

The best time to visit Romblon is from November to May. While the temperatures remain fairly consistent year round, there is quite a high chance of rainfall between June and October. As there isn’t a major dip in temperatures throughout the year, you could visit at any time and diving is still popular in the region year round.

Where to Stay in Romblon

When it comes to accommodation on Romblon Island, there is not a whole lot of choice. Like we said, it’s very difficult to get to and there are very few tourists, so don’t come expecting a bunch of 5 star resorts. But again, this is one of the reasons we loved it here.

As we didn’t have solid plans in place for our arrival and we had almost no access to internet on Tablas Island, we didn’t book anything in advance. We walked off the boat and went in search of a place to stay. We naively assumed it would be easy, but it turned out to be a nightmare.

There was no signage around, people were pointing us in all directions, and the first few places we stumbled upon were somehow all fully booked, despite the feeling that we were the only tourists around.

Eventually we made our way to the Muravian Hotel and found a fan room for 600 PHP ($15.73 USD) per night for a double room. It wasn’t much to write home about, but it was available and we were knackered.

The smart play, if you know when you will be arriving, is to book somewhere in advance. Below are some of the only places in Romblon that you can actually book online and in advance.

Romblon Fun Divers & Inn   – On the ferry over we met a couple of other backpackers who were staying at the Fun Divers accommodation and it appears to be the most popular place to stay on the island. They have clean and modern rooms, it’s located right were you get off the ferry and they are the best known dive shop in the area. It was a little pricey for us, as we travel on a mega budget, but for most people it’s quite reasonable.

Bon2Beach Guesthouse   – If you want to stay right next to Bonbon Beach and only a short drive from the town centre, then this place is perfect. It is right on the beach and just a few minutes walk to that epic sandbar. It is the best rated place to stay in Romblon Island, although to be fair, there isn’t much competition.

LCF – BB Hotel  – Literally your only other option if you want to stay in the town centre is the BB Hotel. The location is great and you are right in the thick of things, close to all the restaurants and shops. It’s slightly more expensive than the Fun Divers Inn and not quite as well reviewed.

Tiamban Beach in Romblon

Where to Eat in Romblon

You won’t be spoilt for choice in terms of restaurants, but there are a handful of places where you can grab a decent meal.

JD&G Italian Foods – This is probably the best food on the island. The pizzas are delicious and aren’t too expensive at around 300 PHP ($6 USD) per pizza.

Old Sailor Resto Bar – This is located right next door to JD&G Italian Foods and also offers western food at a reasonable price.

Yum Café – This café seems to be located in the most random place on the western side of the island but it was busy every time we drove by. They offer pizzas, tacos and bowls.

One major attraction of Romblon Island that we haven’t included in our itinerary is scuba diving, as we didn’t dive while we were here. Romblon is known for having fantastic snorkeling and diving, and if you are coming here planning to dive, we recommend adding an extra day or two onto your trip.

Sandbar on Logbon Island, the Philippines

Romblon Tourist Spots

This was the absolute highlight of our time on Romblon Island and the main reason we made the trip out here. In fact, it was so good we ended up visiting this beach several times during our time here.

Less than 10-minutes’ drive from Romblon town centre will take you to Bon Bon Beach. When you arrive there is a long stretch of white sand where the local people tend to hang out and spend the day. But the real treasure of this beach is a few hundred metres further along the shore.

At the far point of the beach is an incredible sandbar that stretches out into crystal clear blue water than was probably some of the bluest water we have ever seen. The sandbar is only a couple of metres wide and a little under 100 metres long. Because it takes a short walk to get here, none of the locals really bother walking out to the sandbar. Our first morning here we had it all to ourselves for an hour which was amazing. These days it is rare to be able to enjoy a place this spectacular with no other people around.

We spent the morning walking up and down the sandbar and taking in the stunning views. As it started to heat up we jumped into the clear blue water to cool down and enjoyed floating around in this little slice of paradise.

Bon Bon Beach genuinely is one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever been to and you will want to make sure you have enough time to visit here more than once during your Romblon itinerary.

Read our full guide on Bon Bon Beach here!

Bonbon Beach in Romblon, the Philippines

Fort San Andres

Overlooking the ocean, Fort San Andres towers above Romblon town centre. The old fort is from hundreds of years ago when there was a heavy Spanish presence in the area. You can see this influence on the architecture all around Romblon Island and it has made for some beautiful old buildings.

The entrance to the fort is just a short walk or bike ride from town until you reach the bottom of the steps. From the bottom of the steps it is a short 10-minute climb to reach the fort. Entrance fee to Fort San Andres is by donation, and all money raised goes towards the upkeep of the crumbling structure.

It’s a great place to watch the sunset with uninterrupted views down to the town below and out across to some of the other islands.

Another great beach that is just a short drive from the town centre is Nonok Beach Resort or Dolphin Beach. We couldn’t help but think of the Titanic when we saw this beach due to the front half of a boat that has been built out of concrete. While it wasn’t our favourite beach on the island, it is certainly worth a visit and a great place to relax for a few hours. Entrance costs 50 PHP ($1 USD) per person.

Nonok Beach in Romblon

Don’t let the word resort fool you into thinking this is a fancy or expensive place. After driving our scooter around the island we pulled up to San Pedros Resort to check out Talipasak Beach. There is a 50 PHP ($1 USD) per person entrance fee but it was worth every penny.

It is a spectacular little beach, tucked in between some rocky cliff faces with blue water lapping the shores. The beach is also lined with trees, making it feel so secluded when you are on the beach and also providing lots of shade to relax in during the midday sun.

If you are feeling adventurous there is a small, private beach on the left hand side as you walk into the water. It doesn’t take much effort to swim there and if you do make it here you will have an amazing patch of sand all to yourself for the afternoon.

There were only a few other people at this resort and everybody we came across was incredibly friendly to us. After enjoying the beach, we grabbed a quick bite to eat and some cold drinks in the restaurant, which were both quite cheap. There aren’t many better places to have a meal on Romblon Island.

Talipasak Beach at San Pedros Resort

Romblon Island Hopping Tour

Along with Bon Bon Beach, this was one of the highlights of our Romblon itinerary. Much like renting a scooter, it was a bit of a mission to find someone with a boat who was willing to take us around the different islands here. Eventually we found someone down by the docks, near the fishing port, who offered to take us.

One of the greatest things about this trip is that the boat only cost us 1300 PHP ($25.64 USD) for the whole day and we had it to ourselves. This was by far the cheapest island hopping tour we have done in the Philippines and it was an epic trip.

The fee for the boat rental doesn’t include food, water or snorkels, so you will have to bring all of these yourself. We didn’t bring snorkels, although there were a couple of spots that we could have snorkelled at. Be sure to pack some food, as it will be almost impossible to find food on your island hopping tour.

We passed one other boat tour the entire day and we had every single spot to ourselves when we stopped. This is exactly how we like to experience these awesome places and it made for a once in a lifetime trip. Below we outline the stops we selected on our island hopping trip, although the itinerary is really up to you.

Romblon island hopping tour

Cobrador Island

For our first stop of the day we decided to head to Cobrador Island, or more specifically Marakay Marakay cliff jumping spot, just off the coast of Cobrador Island. There is a small, brightly painted shack built on top of the small island and a diving board has been built out over the deep blue water.

Jumping and flipping off the diving board into the crazy blue water was a great way to start the day off by getting the adrenaline pumping. A set of stairs has been built into the side of the cliff making it easy to climb back up and jump from the diving board as many times as you like.

It was serious fun and we were jumping into a bunch of jellyfish in the water below, but they didn’t seem to sting us at all. We love finding random spots like this and it really was the ultimate start to our day of island hopping.

For those looking to snorkel, there is a fish sanctuary just off Cobrador Island that would be perfect for seeing the underwater world.

You can also visit the main beach on Cobrador Island for 20 PHP ($0.40 USD) per person. It is a spectacular stretch of long golden sand and the water is an outrageous shade of blue. This is the only part of the day where we saw other tourists. However, they didn’t stick around long, and even if they did, it was such a big beach that it still would never feel crowded.

Alad Island

Our boat captain took us to his home on Alad Island. We aren’t sure whether he just wanted to stop in and have lunch or actually show us the island, but either way it worked out pretty great. The island has back to back crescent beaches and looked absolutely incredible from the air.

There were no resorts or hotels built here, only the homes of the local people built right next to the beach. It was a beautiful spot and one we felt privileged to enjoy. We found some shade underneath a tree and enjoyed our picnic lunch with unreal views and nobody else around.

Alad Island in Romblon

Logbon Island

Once our captain had finished his lunch we were back on the water and heading to Logbon Beach. This is another beach with a small sandbar that stretches out into the blue water. The beach is lined with palm trees and ours was the only boat even pulled up on the beach here.

While it isn’t quite as jaw dropping as Bon Bon Beach, it certainly gives it a run for its money. This was probably the second best beach we saw in Romblon and it was awesome to hang out on the sandbar and swim in the clear blue water. Logbon is also a great spot to go snorkelling and is where you are most likely to see turtles on your island hopping tour.

This beach is just across the water from the town centre and you can actually see it from Bon Bon Beach. If you haven’t made it to Bon Bon Beach yet, you can also include it on your boat tour. Our captain offered to take us over there, but we had already visited several times so we opted to head for home instead.

While we may have seen some more impressive sights while island hopping in El Nido and Coron this was just as good due to the remote location of the islands and the complete lack of any other tourists. It felt like we were the only people on the planet for most of the day, which is such a cool experience.

Logbon Island in Romblon

Like everywhere else in the Philippines, the people on Romblon Island are huge basketball fans. We ended up stumbling into a local game as we were walking home from dinner one night. After hearing all the noise and seeing all the people around the stadium entrance we knew we had to check it out.

It was only a couple of the local teams playing, but the noise and the atmosphere were immense and it was such a fun experience. I have no idea how you would find out where to watch a game, but if you get the chance it’s well worth joining in on the fun.

Local basketball game during a Romblon itinerary

A few minutes further down from Bon Bon Beach is Tiamban Beach, another brilliant beach on Romblon Island. This was one of the busier beaches that we visited, but by the time sunset rolled around it really quietened down.

There is a picnic area when you first arrive but if you walk down the beach to the right hand side there is nothing but nature. Dense palm trees line the shores and when you are at the far end of the beach it feels like you are totally secluded from the outside world.

Tiamban Beach on Romblon Island

This is hands down, the best way to explore! Jump on a scooter and take off down the coastal road that runs along the west coast of Romblon Island. The drive is stunning and there are so many random things to see along the way. We rode almost halfway around the island before turning back and it was great to get even more off the beaten path and explore some random side roads and see what we could find ourselves that wasn’t on any blog or travel guide.

A popular spot to stop and enjoy lunch is Yums Café, about 20-25 minutes outside of Romblon town centre. Alternatively, if you are looking for a good snorkel spot, check out the beach in front of the Reggae Vibes Guesthouse. The area just south of here makes up part of the Agpanabat Fish Sanctuary and offers notoriously good snorkelling.

Riding a scooter around Romblon Island

Final Thoughts

A trip to Romblon Island will probably be the most adventurous part of your trip to the Philippines. It’s totally off the beaten path, has so many spectacular places to visit, and there is almost nobody else here. This all adds up to an epic few days.

Whether you spend a few days or a week here, we hope our Romblon itinerary can help you get the most out of your time. A trip out here is already made worth it by Bon Bon Beach alone, but when you add in all the other amazing Romblon tourist spots you are guaranteed to have an incredible experience.

11 Places to Visit in Romblon + Things To Do

Romblon, an archipelagic province in the Mimaropa region of the Philippines, is not very popular among tourists. But it deserves some spotlight for all the glorious gems it has.

Romblon has a wide array of unspoiled beauty, divided among three major islands: the provincial capital of the same name, Romblon, Tablas, and Sibuyan. They feature various adventures ranging from the laidback to the most thrilling. On top of the list is Carabao Island, a stunning beach that could compete with that of Boracay, minus all the noise and the crowd. For seasoned divers who want edge-of-your-seat excitement underwater, there’s Blue Hole, a vertical tunnel at the northeast tip of Tablas Island. Sibuyan Island has Mt. Guiting Guiting to boast about. It’s the highest mountain in the province and one of the toughest hikes in the country.

ROMBLON TOURIST SPOTS + TRAVEL GUIDE + LIST OF HOTELS, RESORTS, AND  BEACHES

Romblon Destinations | Travel Guide covers various places to visit in the province as well as a list of hotels and resorts.

Romblon: An Archipelago at the Heart of the Philippines

Set at a location which could quickly be taken for as the “heart” of the country, Romblon is a cluster of islands and a province that lies at the upper center of the Philippines. As a tiny archipelago within an archipelago, Romblon consists of three major islands, namely Romblon Island itself, Sibuyan Island, and Tablas Island as well as a slew of other smaller isles numbering to 20.

For some, the moniker might seem confusing as there is both an island separates from the rest named “Romblon” and a whole archipelago named collectively as “Romblon.” To rid the confusion, let us not forget that “Romblon” without the “Island” in its appellation refers to the province as a whole, while “Romblon” with “Island” in its name talks about that one specific island in the province.

Consequently, it is Romblon Island that is the province’s capital city and therefore where the seat of the local government resides.

Romblon is a region in the Philippines that is lived by a distinct culture called Romblomanon and who speaks their dialect called “Ini.”

Marble Capital

Considered the “Marble Capital of the Philippines” for its world-class and significant export of marble.  Romblon thrives partially by exporting this valued rock across the country and elsewhere. However, despite this reputation, Romblon is only the second-largest producer of marble in the country.

A Quiet Neighbor of Boracay

With a location set at a considerable distance from one of the Philippines’ top tourist destination, Boracay, it is hard not to compare Romblon with Aklan’s prized gem. But while tourists are indeed flocking in Boracay, sometimes day and night, that the place has become overcrowded in the process, Romblon prides itself for being the tranquil version of Boracay, but not less the looks.

For those who are not willing to compromise on peace—often the primary elements for tourism—Romblon is undeniably one of the best alternatives in the region. Almost literally, some of the best beaches in Romblon is like Boracay itself, minus the crowd and thus the preservation of serenity in the area. Indeed, you have all the reasons to explore Romblon tourist spots.

Like many small archipelagos of its kind, one of the main attractions in Romblon is undeniably is constellations of islands, each of which has its unique offerings but all with a common denominator for being awesome. Meaning, each island has plenty of beaches whose untainted beauty preserves what is inherently appealing to nature as we know it.

Romblon Tourist Spots, Beaches

But there are also other places of interest scattered across Romblon, and it speaks of sites such as caves and waterfalls, both of which has a unique level of entertainment to their visit.

On the other hand, Romblon is also a place of historical value to it as well. As a site that was once commonplace for foreign pirates (Dutch) and local raiders (Moros), Romblon is an area where the Fort of San Andres once stood and is now a house to the PAG-ASA Romblon Observatory.

Another noteworthy infrastructure with historical value in the area is the Fort Santiago which is now nothing but a ruin of its former glory.

Currently, these two areas are among the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Summer is just around the corner, and I know that you are very eager to find a place to visit. If you would like to get rid of the crowd and at the same time enjoy the beach and other activities, then I highly recommend that you head to Romblon.

Romblon Island Visitors Guide

romblon tourist spot

This brief guide to Romblon Island will let you know how to get there, what to do, eat, and drink, where to stay, and must-see spots.

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Not too far away from Boracay Island lies the island of Romblon.  It is part of Romblon town and is one of the three major islands of Romblon province along with Sibuyan Island and Tablas Island .  The naming can be confusing but it is what it is.

Though the smallest among the three major islands of the province, Romblon Island is blessed with natural attractions and resources including beaches, waterfalls, rock formations, and marine life.  While it isn’t always crowded and over-commercialism hasn’t reached the island yet, there exists a handful of eateries, resorts, and shops to help make your stay enjoyable and more relaxing.

Romblon Island Location Map

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Romblon Island summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Romblon Island in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

The Twin Forts of Romblon were Spanish military defense made of coral blocks and bricks.  Built between 1573 and 1644, the forts were used to protect Romblon against Muslim raiders and Dutch invaders.  They are located on a higher elevation and overlooking the town and the sea including the harbor.  Presently, only Fort San Andres which is located on San Antonio Hill remains intact while Fort Santiago on Calvary Hill is in ruins.  The twin forts were declared National Cultural Treasure and San Andres remains a popular spot for sightseeing and photo shoots.

4 | Marble Quarry and Workshops

One of the biggest producers of marble in the country, Romblon was given the nickname as the Marble Capital of the Philippines .  To see a marble quarry, head over to Lio Bay.  There’s a huge quarry area through a village and right on the coast.  Marble workshops, on the other hand, are found along the side of the road leading to the village.  You can see how these marbles are carved and shaped in statues and other items.

5 | St. Joseph Cathedral

The St. Joseph Cathedral Parish, also known as Romblon Cathedral, is a centuries-old church built during the Spanish colonial period.  It was built to withstand Moro raid attacks and protect the people from these attacks.  It was declared a National Cultural Treasure and is one of popular landmarks of the province.

6 | Talipasak Beach

A private property known as San Pedro Beach Resort, Talipasak Beach is a haven of lush greenery overlooking the crystal clear water.  Its peaceful vibe and breathtaking view makes it a perfect spot to chill out.

7 | Tiamban Beach

Not too far away from Bonbon Beach lies Tiamban Beach, a white sand beach with crystal clear water.  The unspoilt beach is lined with palm trees and is less crowded therefore a great spot to relax and enjoy the serenity this beach offers.

8 | Nearby Destinations

Romblon Island is surrounded with islands blessed with amazing beaches and caves.  You may not want to miss the Cobrador Island and beach which remain unspoilt like most other beaches in the province.  You may also want to see Tinagong Dagat, a lagoon hidden by rocky walls and some cliffs.  Alad Cave, Logbon Beach, and Marakay Marakay Cliff Jump are some other spots you may want to see when in Romblon.

NOTE: The Biniray Festival occurs annually in Romblon Island the 2nd week of January.

2 | Jd & G. Italian Food

Jd & G. Italian Food is a cozy restaurant known for its great service and warm hospitality especially from its owner who cooks special food requests that aren’t even on the menu as long as the ingredients are available.  Customers keep coming back for their pizzas but they also serve good pasta, chicken, and homemade desserts.  Being the top restaurant on the island based on reviews, we definitely shouldn’t miss Jd & G. Italian Food.

3 | Romblon Deli

The restaurant may look simple from the outside but the food is anything but.  The restaurant serves western favorites including pizza, pasta, chicken, and pastries.  The restaurant is open as early as 7:00 AM so you can start your day here before you explore the island.

Smohk is an American restaurant known to serve the best American burger and pork chop in Romblon.  In addition to excellent food, the restaurant has a great ambience and impressive service making it one of the must-visit restaurants on the island.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.   AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda , and  Expedia .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skyscanner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Romblon Island.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Romblon Island, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling on Romblon Island or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Banton, Romblon: A Travel Guide to the Heritage Paradise

romblon tourist spot

After exploring the provincial capital of Romblon for a three days , I spontaneously decided to stop by for a few days on the island municipality of Banton – still part of Romblon province – en route back to the Luzon mainland. The remote island sits halfway between the larger islands of Tablas and Marinduque in the northern portion of the Sibuyan Sea. It is known for its exceptional archaeological sites, colonial-era fortress, and isolated white-sand beaches that ring its mostly rugged coastline. The name Banton was derived from the Asi word batoon , meaning “rocky”, referring to the rugged topography of the island due to its volcanic origin. Another possible origin is the word bantoy , which is the Asi word for the venomous stonefish.

Heritage Town of Banton

Ferries to and from the island arrive and depart from Banton Town, along the eastern coast. The Port of Banton is a great place to start your exploration of the compact town center, which can be easily explored on foot. The pier area is a great place to watch the sunrise breaking over the Sibuyan Sea and the rocky beach next to the port, which leads to Punta Matagar , a rock formation shaped like an arrowhead as its name in the local Asi language suggests.

Established by Spanish colonizers in 1622, Banton is the oldest colonial settlement in Romblon province. A walk around town reveals a Spanish-era church, fortress, and some heritage houses. Fuerza de San Jose was built between 1640 to 1650 to protect the settlement from Moro pirates from Mindanao. Unfortunately, due to poor restoration and surrounding urban development, this fortress isn’t as impressive as Fuerza de San Andres , the hilltop fort in Romblon town. Saint Nicholas of Tolentino Parish Church was also built around the same time as the fortress which surrounds it, however, the church now has a 20th-century facade.

Guyangan Cave System

In 1936, archaeology put Banton on the map when 700-year-old textile fragments were discovered inside a wooden coffin inside Ipot Cave (closed to the public), one of the seven caves of the Guyangan Cave System , located at a forested limestone hill just north of Banton town. Declared a National Cultural Treasure, the Banton Burial Cloth dates from the precolonial times, between the 14th to 15th centuries, and is the oldest surviving example of ikat textile not only in the country but in the entire Southeast Asian region!

Ikat is a resist technique that originated from Indonesia. It involves the dyeing of the textile fibers prior to weaving. In warp ikat, only the warp fibers are dyed. The Banton Burial Cloths are displayed at the National Museum of Anthropology in Manila.

While most of the Guyangan are closed to the public to prevent looting and disturbing important archaeological sites, a few like Silak Cave can be visited by tourists with the help of a local guide. Accompanied by experienced guide Awe Faigo (Tel. +63 9661541826, Guiding fee: ₱500 per group of 1-10 persons), who’s been visiting these caves for more than 50 years, we hiked up a steep, rocky path for 10 minutes to the narrow entrance of the burial cave, where we slipped through a large crack into a small cavern with human bones and broken Chinese ceramics.

The cavern was lit by natural light from an opening that overlooks the coastline, giving the cave its name which means “light” in the Asi language. If you look closely at the skulls, some of them exhibit artificial cranial deformation , a practice among precolonial Filipinos especially among the nobility.

Beach Hopping by Scooter

To visit the beaches elsewhere, I rented a self-drive scooter that took me on counter-clockwise tour that circumnavigated the island. Most of the roads on the island are paved, however, they are mostly single-lane narrow and very steep at some portions, so one must be extra cautious and wear a helmet when navigating the island. Alternatively, one may hire a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) to tour you around the island. You’ll have to bring packed lunch with you, as there are no places to eat outside of town.

My first stop was Catarman Beach , a boulder beach along the northern coast which reminded me of those found in Batanes. This shoreline has views of Marinduque island to the north and its peak, Mt. Malindig. Driving farther east to an access road that abruptly (and dangerously) ends at a cliff then climbing a concrete steps, I reached Tabunan Beach , the largest white-sand beach on the island with a rocky islet, Polloc Island , offshore. I ate my packed lunch here and went for a short swim before rounding the southern section of the island to drop by more white-sand beaches, which were smaller: Suk-an Beach , Macat-ang Beach and, finally, Tambak Beach , which had powdery white sand.

Hiking at Mt. Guinsiba & Mayamig Peak

Aside from exploring the coastline, one can discover hiking trails that lead inland to the island’s mountainous interior. A rewarding day hike from Banton town is Mount Guinsiba . On my second morning on the island, I decided to go on a solo sunrise hike. I left the guesthouse at 4:00 am drove the scooter up a mountain road for 15 minutes to the bottom of concrete steps that led to the top of Mt. Guinsiba. It took me 30 minutes to reach the unfinished concrete view at the summit, climbing 643 steps then a 100-meter grassy trail. The cloudy weather obscured the sunrise on the horizon, but the weather eventually cleared to reveal magnificent views overlooking Banton Town, the Sibuyan Sea, and the taller mountains nearby.

A more challenging but more scenic hike is Mayamig Peak (also called Malamig Peak) in the mountainous heart of the island. From Banton town, I drove to the trailhead at Barangay Tan-ag via Barangay Tungonan (since the route via Sibay has a very steep ascent). Visit the Tan-ag barangay hall to register and hire a guide (₱200 per group). From the trailhead, it’s a 40-minute easy hike to Mayamig Plateau , a grassy highlight with panoramic views of the surrounding islands and cold, foggy weather. Walking across the plateau, we could see, to the south, Gakot Island (Bantoncillo), Simara Island (Municipality of Corcuera) and Tablas Island, and, to the north, Marinduque Island. From the plateau, its another 10 minutes to Mayamig Peak itself, the highest point of the mountain.

How to Get There

Inter-island ro-ro ferries travel to the islands of Romblon Province, including Banton, from Lucena City, Quezon, a few hour’s bus ride south of Metro Manila.  Starhorse Shipping Lines (Tel. +63 42 7107403) has overnight trips via Lucena-Banton-San Agustin (Tablas Island)-Romblon on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays at 4:00 pm. Travel time from Lucena to Banton is around six hours. Schedules frequently change, so it’s best to contact the shipping companies to confirm. The ferries also don’t leave on time.

Please contact the  Romblon Provincial Tourism Office  for the latest travel requirements and other tourism inquiries.

Where to Stay

There are only a few basic guesthouses in Banton town. I highly recommend Hipos Yang Inn (Tel. +63 9184011324), a family-run budget accommodation with dorm-style rooms and sari-sari store where you can buy basic food supplies. The inn is located at Alejandro Fatallo St, 250 meters away from the Port of Banton. Room rates are ₱300 per head for solo guest and ₱250 per head for two guests for a fan room, and ₱500 per head for solo guest or ₱350 per head for two guests for an air-conditioned room.

Where to Eat

There are no restaurants on the island, only a few carinderias or eateries that primarily serve local residents. At Hipos Yang Inn, you may cook your own food in the common kitchen, or have the staff prepare your meals during your stay.

Getting Around

The most practical way to get around the island is to hire a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) or rent your own scooter. I was able to rent a Motorstar scooter with helmet from a local couple I met on the ferry en route to Banton for ₱300 per day. Contact Cecil at +63 9216881240.
