Isle of Skye

1 Day Isle of Skye & Eilean Donan Castle

A one day adventure to the Isle of Skye. Drive along the world-famous Loch Ness, and towards the west coast, where mountains give way to sea lochs. Venture inside Eilean Donan Castle on an optional tour.

We leave behind the ‘Capital of the Highlands’, for a full-day adventure to the magical Isle of Skye. We drive along the world-famous Loch Ness - home of the elusive monster – and onwards through the mountains towards the west coast. Majestic mountains give way to vast sea lochs, once used by Vikings as an access route to our lands. We stop at the romantic Eilean Donan Castle with time for you to explore inside.

After crossing the Skye Bridge, learn about the island’s myths and legends, as well as the true tales of rival clans and a fugitive prince. Enjoy lunch in the main town of Portree and visit the colourful harbour. Explore the Isle of Skye’s stunning coastline, and marvel at the Old Man of Storr, Lealt Falls, and Kilt Rock. Take in the last of Skye’s otherworldly landscape as we drive through the Highlands back to Inverness.

Full Tour Itinerary

Leaving Inverness behind, we'll travel over the Kessock Bridge to the Black Isle and onwards to Achnasheen. Our journey continues through the striking beauty of Glen Carron to reach the highlight of our day together, the Isle of Skye .

The island has some 400 miles of coastline, so the next part of our journey offers beautiful views over the silvery sea lochs to the islands of Scalpay and Raasay. We'll make our way to Portree, the island's main town.

There's free time to explore this pretty community - don't forget to seek out the colourful houses surrounding the harbour.

Kilt Rock which stands overlooking the Sound of Raasay. You'll marvel at the sight of the basalt columns that resemble the pleats of a kilt and the plunging waterfall that cascades 180 feet (60m) into the sea below.

Next, we move on to see the rocky Old Man of Storr, a 50-metre pinnacle, that overlooks Loch Leathan. It makes a stunning image, just right for your next social media post.

The Trotternish peninsula is a 20-mile journey of dramatic landscapes and extraordinary rock formations. As we explore listen to stories of the many Jurassic fossils found here that have given Skye the nickname "The Dinosaur Isle”!

The Cuillin Mountains dominate the skyline of the island. We'll stop at Sligachan, where there are impressive views of the Red and Black Cuillin Mountains to savour.

Our final stop on Skye will allow you time to visit the famous Fairy Pools . After a 20-minute walk or so, you'll see the first of the pools that have become an Instagram sensation.

The series of picturesque rock pools and tumbling waterfalls are famous for their crystal clear waters that flow from the Cuillin Hills. There's plenty of time to enjoy the views before returning to the coach.

Please note that the return walk to the Fairy Pools is around 1.5 miles and will take approximately 40 minutes. As the path involves stepping stones over streams, adequate footwear is essential.

Back on the mainland, we'll make a photo stop at Eilean Donan Castle , one of Scotland's most iconic sights and an excellent place for a selfie!

The last part of our journey will take us along the banks of mysterious Loch Ness. We'll make our final photo stop at Urquhart Castle , whose ruins sit overlooking the deepest part of the loch.

From here, it's a short drive back to Inverness and the end of our tour.

3 Day Isle of Skye

This tour was absolutely brilliant! Branka, the guide, was the best. She made everything we wanted come true, even the silliest request to ''find the end of the rainbow'', but Branka somehow managed it. Her stories about the history, legends and sights of Scotland were captivating. On the last day, due to high winds, we couldn't leave the Isle of Skye in the morning. Branka went out of her way to make the trip unforgettable and stopped to show us more of the Isle of Skye and somehow managed to find some Highland Coo (which we all really wanted to see). The hostel we stayed in was booked for this trip and was so comfortable, clean and warm. I would 100% do this trip again to spend more time with Branka, she really is magical!

4-Day Isle of Skye & West Highlands Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh

The beautiful weather accompanied us for 4 days - we could not have wished for a better starting position! Our driver has presented us in each case the daily program - then it was also always briskly. We have marveled at wonderful landscapes, "official" sights and also small "highlights". In 4 days, of course, you can not visit every castle, stop everywhere - but a first impression of the diversity of the country we have received. Bobbi gave us a lot of information and tips. Both accommodations were cozy and clean - each with a small tea/coffee kitchen in the room. Breakfast plentiful (Scottish and/or continental). For those who don't want to drive themselves (or don't trust themselves to drive on the left), a minibus trip like this gives you the opportunity to see some of Scotland and the convenience of not having to rely on public transportation. Clear recommendation from my side.

Eddie the driver is enthusiastic and helpful. Since we are going through the Scottish land, it didn’t matter if he didn’t pronounce accurately! He tried taking us to places. However, the size of the bus seem to have him turned away! Re the coming Orkney tour on 8th July, please confirm if the driver means 2pm at the waiting room of Inverness train station. Marked ‘waiting room’ in blue. I have to be at the train station by 5.45pm on 14 July latest to catch the night train to London on 6.45pm

Rich has awesome pub and restaurant recommendations and his knowledge about Scotland and its history are out of this world! So ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars from Suus and Dieuwke

5 Best Isle of Skye Tours From Edinburgh to the Highlands

Welcome to the ultimate guide on the best Isle of Skye tours from Edinburgh, meticulously curated by me, Taylor, your Europe Travel Expert. Drawing from my extensive travels in Scotland and in-depth research, I’ve handpicked each tour for its itinerary, unique additions, and top-notch quality. Join me as we embark on a journey to discover the Isle of Skye, starting from the historic heart of Edinburgh.

The Isle of Skye is one of the most beautiful places in Scotland . It’s known for its charming villages, medieval castles, and dramatic landscapes that look like you plucked them right out of a photograph.

Located in the northwestern part of Scotland , the Isle of Skye is incredibly scenic, with many rugged cliffs, waterfalls, and sea views.

However, it is also quite remote, and transportation options are limited. While I’ve driven a car in Scotland and it is doable, unless you plan to rent a car, the best option for getting there is to take an Isle of Skye Tour from Edinburgh.

The Isle of Skye is around a 5-6 hour drive from Edinburgh, so it isn’t possible to do it as a day trip. Instead, most Isle of Skye Tours are 3-day tours so that you have time to fully experience this incredible area of Scotland.

I’ve traveled all over Scotland, and I can tell you, even though it’s a hike.. .you don’t want to miss the beauty that is Isle of Skye.

✅ Accommodation in B&B Included ✅ Small Group Tour (Max 16 people) ✅ Breakfast Included

✅ Day 1: Glencoe, Ben Nevis, Portree (Skye) ✅ Day 2: Old Man of Storr, Dunvegan Castle, Kilt Rock ✅ Day 3: Eilean Donan Castle, Loch Ness

For an incredible Isle of Skye Tour from Edinburgh, look no further than this 3-day trip to the Isle of Skye and the Scottish Highlands led by Rabbie’s – a very well-regarded tour company in Scotland.

This tour has over 1,000+ 5 Star reviews , which is basically unheard of. AND, you’ll check so many destinations and Scottish landmarks off your list, making it the best possible choice for visiting the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh.

Start your 3-day experience with a drive through the Scottish Highlands , one of the most scenic places in the country. You’ll stop along the way at Glencoe, a stunning place I visited on my last Scotland trip and loved , and you’ll even see Ben Nevis, Scotland’s tallest mountain!

You’ll reach Portree, which is the capital of the Isle of Skye. Here you’ll enjoy comfortable accommodation in a Scottish B&B for the next two nights while you experience everything the Isle of Skye has to offer.

The second day is all about exploring the Isle of Skye. Visit stunning sights such as The Old Man of Storr, a famous rock formation. Next venture to Kilt Rock for its panoramic views of waterfalls, cliffs, and the sea. Last but not least, visit Dunvegan Castle and learn more about Scottish clan history.

On the third day, head back towards Edinburgh, stopping at sights like Eilean Donan Castle and Loch Ness on the way . At Loch Ness, make sure to search for Nessie , the mythical Loch Ness Monster.

This is a small-group tour that guarantees a maximum of 16 people or less, which ensures that you have an enjoyable, personalized experience and not your average run-of-the-mill tour where you’re herded places in a large group.

⭐ Unlike many other tours, this one includes your accommodation in a charming B&B or 3-star hotel, so you don’t have to worry about planning a thing! You just get to sit back and enjoy Skye.

Urquhart Castle on the Loch Ness is one of the fabulous sights seen during the Isle of Skye tours from Edinburgh.

2. Best Tour for History Buffs: 3-Day Isle of Skye, Inverness, Highlands, and Glenfinnan Viaduct Tour

⭐Rating: 5/5 Stars | ⏳Duration: 3 Full Days | Book Now !

✅ Free Time in Inverness ✅ Harry Potter & Outlander Sites! ❌ Does Not Include Accommodation

✅ Day 1: Loch Lomond, Glennfinnan Viaduct, Urquhart Castle ✅ Day 2: Skye: Quiraing, Eilean Donan Castle ✅ Day 3: Culloden, Clava Cairns, Highland Folk Museum

This tour includes so many of my favorite places in Scotland. If you can only take one tour to Skye and the Highlands, I’d recommend this one! This tour is run by The Hairy Coo and visits many amazing historical sites, including the Glenfinnan Viaduct (Harry Potter fans, anyone?!?), Eilean Donan Castle, Culloden Battlefield, and more.

On the first day of this tour, you’ll travel through the Scottish Highlands to places like Loch Lomond, the Glenfinnan Viaduct, Fort Augustus Abbey, and Urquhart Castle.

You’ll end the day in Inverness, one of my favorite places in Scotland, where you will stay the next two nights. You will need to book your own accommodation in Inverness , but this gives you flexibility on where you want to stay.

The next day, head to the famous Isle of Skye. Explore scenic places like the Skye Bridge, the Trotternish Ridge, and panoramic views of Quiraing. You’ll also have a chance to stop at Eilean Donan Castle, which is considered the most beautiful castle in Scotland.

On the last day, learn more about Scottish history as you visit the site of the Culloden Battlefield. Other highlights include the Clava Cairns (a MUST for Outlander fans!), the Highland Folk Museum, and the village of Dunkeld.

This tour is one of my favorites! It covers so many bases- Scottish legends like Loch Ness, and sites for both Harry Potter and Outlander lovers (Can you tell I love them? Lol!). Plus, it gives you front row access to places that not every tourist has the opportunity to see in Scotland.

It is the perfect option for anyone who wants to learn more about Scottish history and culture while exploring the scenery.

“I couldn’t recommend this tour more! If you are on the fence of booking it, just do it! Our tour guide, Stephen, did an incredible job of keeping the group entertained while providing great historical facts.” – Caroline ( Read More Reviews Here )

This tour is the best option for a private, personalized experience in Scotland.

🚨 Note : You will need to book 2 nights of accommodation on your own for this tour. However, this will give you the flexibility to decide where you want to stay. I recommend this hotel!

“Would recommend! I only had a short time to see Skye and was nervous about driving on Scottish roads so this was an ideal way for me to see the bits I wanted! (and bits I wouldn’t have ever known about!) It ended up being so much more fun and energetic than anticipated as our friendly guide Michael got us all ready to converse, igniting new discussions and friendships between mostly solo travellers (of a relatable young age group) and getting the party started! (with an impressive volume of historic tales)” Jasmine C ( see more reviews )

Similar to other tours, the first day is spent traveling from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye, which stops at places like Dunkeld (a beautiful cathedral town) and Eilean Donan Castle. Day two is spent in Isle of Skye after an overnight in Portree, with visits to Dunvegan Castle, Kilt Rock, and more. On the final day, drive back to Edinburgh and stop at places like Glenfinnan Viaduct and National Wallace Monument.

For budget or younger travelers, this is the perfect tour to book!

Edinburgh to Isle of Skye: Car, Train, & Bus Tour

Portree Colorful Houses in front of water on the Isle of Skye

This article has links to products and services we love, which we may make commission from.

Are you planning a trip to The Misty Isle in search of dramatic landscapes, rural culture, folklore, and fairies? This guide explains exactly how to travel from Edinburgh to Skye by car for road-tripping, by train for comfort, by bus for affordability, and by day tour accompanied by expert guide. We’ve personally done the latter!

Note: While Skye is an island located in the Inner Hebrides in Scotland, you don’t actually have to arrive by water as there is a bridge. However, we will include ferry options below too.

You may also like our free  7-day Scotland itinerary .

Edinburgh to Skye by Car

The direct route from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye’s capital, Portree takes around 5.5 hours (236 miles) without stops.

This itinerary follows the A90 over the Queensferry Crossing (Forth Bridges – image below), which connects South Queensferry with the Kingdom of Fife, and onto the M90 and A9 through Perthshire.

Next, the rural roads, which are referred to as “A” roads of the A86 and A87, lead the way to the Kyle of Lochalsh and over the Skye Bridge; Fàilte (welcome)!

Map of Edinburgh to Skye Direct Driving Route

This part of the journey takes around 4.5 hours (203 miles), with the winding scenic road to Portree remaining.

  • Edinburgh to Skye Driving Time:  Approx. 5.5 hours
  • Pros:  Flexibility, independence, scenic
  • Cons:  Very long, driving single “A” roads can be daunting for first-time visitors, the weather

Scenic Drive From Edinburgh to Skye

The trip to Skye is usually enjoyed at a slower pace over 2-7 days, taking in Scotland’s lively cities, rustic landscape, deep lochs, fresh food, and maybe a whisky dram or two!

There isn’t just one route, but the classic itinerary tends to include a sightseeing stop at the 100ft Kelpies in Falkirk (M90), through Stirling for its castle and the Wallace Monument, to Callander “the gateway to the Highlands” at the Trossachs National Park, joining the A82 to the majestic Glencoe and up to Fort William.

From here, there are two options.

The route either veers left to Glenfinnan, where, if you time it right, you’ll witness the Jacobite steam train, aka Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express, chug over the viaduct.

Then it is back on the road to Mallaig to catch the ferry to Armadale in Skye.

Tickets should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.

Or, the route veers right to Spean Bridge and up the rural roads to the Skye Bridge.

Spean Bridge is close to St. Augustus, south of Loch Ness , so if you want to go Nessie hunting, you could add a side trip to Loch Ness and Inverness before or after visiting Skye; this is very common.

We cover this route in detail during our free seven-day Scotland itinerar y .

Map of Edinburgh to Skye Scenic Route with Ferry Crossing

Another lesser-known option that connects Skye to the mainland is the seasonal Glenelg to Kylerhea ferry .

Note: Many businesses in the Highlands and remote areas of the country shut down for winter, so plan accordingly by booking accommodation in advance, purchasing ferry tickets, packing meals/snacks, and topping up fuel/electricity when you can.

Glencoe from car window on Highlands day tour

Edinburgh to Skye by Train

If driving in Scotland and “on the left” sounds tricky, there is a train that departs Edinburgh Waverley and arrives in Mallaig about 6.5 hours later.

The journey requires one change: check the ScotRail app for the destination legs before booking so that you know where to depart and change over.

This train journey is special as it goes through some of the West Highland Way hike locations, such as Bridge of Orchy and Rannoch, and it goes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, just like the Harry Potter train!

From Mallaig Station, you can walk to the ferry port and sail to Armadale Pier in Skye (30 minutes) and then ride the very scarcely operated bus to Portree (1.5 to 3 hours).

Use this journey planner to help marry up all of the stages of the journey.

If choosing this option, consider that you won’t see much of Skye’s highlights unless you have a tour booked like this one .

An alternative train route is Edinburgh to Kyle of Lochalsh.

It has three legs to the journey, which requires two separate changeovers, then a bus to Portree, which is a little more frequent than the bus from Armadale Pier to Portree.

The train takes anywhere between 6 hours 40 minutes and 7 hours 40 minutes, and the bus is just over one hour.

See Citylink for bus times.

It is not impossible to visit Skye by public transport; it is just a little challenging and has many moving parts!

  • Edinburgh to Skye Train Time 1:  Approx. 6.5 hours, then onward ferry and bus approx. 2-3 hours
  • Edinburgh to Skye Train Time 2:  6.5-8 hours, then bus approx. 1 hour
  • Pros:  No driving, scenic, seat reservations, electronic charging points, on-board restrooms, cafe
  • Cons:  Room for error, very limited bus service, no flexibility/independence to travel on Skye

Portree Colorful Houses in front of water on the Isle of Skye

Edinburgh to Skye by Bus

The Edinburgh to Inverness and then Inverness to Portree bus takes around 7.5 hours with one changeover; however, this option is not very frequent.

If traveling from Glasgow is possible, there is a direct bus to Portree, which takes around 7 hours.

  • Edinburgh to Portree Bus Time:  Approx. 7.5 hours with changeover
  • Pros:  No driving, scenic, on-board restrooms, affordable
  • Cons:  Room for error, very limited bus service, no flexibility/independence to travel on Skye, comfort restricted

Tours From Edinburgh to Isle of Skye

If all of the above options sound like a headache, consider letting someone else take control of the wheel on a multi-day Isle of Skye trip from Edinburgh.

This 3-day Isle of Skye tour includes a day traveling via Kelpies, Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond, Trossachs National Park, Glencoe, Glenfinnan Viaduct, Loch Ness, and Inverness, where customers have to reserve accommodation for two nights.

On day two, the tour visits attractions on Skye such as the Cuillin Mountains, Trotternish Peninsula, Portree, the Old Man Storr, Kilt Rock, and the Quiraing.

The final day features Culloden Battlefield, Cairngorm National Park, and whisky tasting in Dunkeld (Perthshire), before heading back to Edinburgh.

Alternatively, this 3-day Skye tour arranges accommodation for you, visits most of the tourist sightseeing spots above, and transports customers by Mercedes bus for comfort.

  • Edinburgh to Skye By Tour:  3 days
  • Pros:  Guided tour with driver, lots of sightseeing opportunities
  • Cons:  Lack of flexibility in itinerary, long days, groups of people

Visit Isle of Skye things to do - Skye Island tours

Why visit the Isle of Skye in Scotland?

The Isle of Skye has often been listed as one of the most scenic islands in the world .

And once you are there, you understand why! There is everything (except palm trees LOL): mountains, lochs, white sand beaches, cliffs, waterfalls, castles… And fairy stories!!! It is possible to spend a whole holiday on the Isle of Skye.

Things to see on your Isle of Skye Tour

Below are some of the highlights on Skye Island that you could see on your tour:

  • The pinnacle of the Old Man of Storr protecting the island
  • The Quiraing ridge with stunning views that can go all the way to the sea on a clear day
  • The funny Kilt Rock with the Mealt Falls dropping directly into the ocean
  • The magical landscapes of the Fairy pools cascading from one to the other with the mountains in the background
  • The magnificent cliffs of Neist Point with one of the most iconic lighthouse landscapes in the world

The dream of the Isle of Skye Day Tour from Edinburgh

A lot of people visiting Edinburgh are searching for opportunities to do a day trip to the Isle of Skye, as they have heard of its beauty. However, it is absolutely not possible. Let me explain why:

Can you see the isle of Skye on a day trip From Edinburgh

No. Edinburgh to the Skye Bridge is a 4h30 drive. And the Island is larger that you would expect.  There is not enough time in the day.

Where is the Isle of Skye? How to get there? – Map

Let’s have a reality check, here is a map of Scotland:

Map - Isle of Skye location

And let’s talk distances and driving time without stopping

  • Edinburgh to Skye Bridge: 4h25 drive 200 miles – 322 km
  • Glasgow to Skye Bridge: 4h20 drive 180 miles – 290 km
  • Inverness to Skye Bridge: 2h drive 80 miles – 129 km

Size of the Isle of Skye

And once you are on the island, it is actually bigger than one imagines… this is why there is so much to see. For example the main town Portree is already a 1-hour drive from the Skye Bridge and it is only in the middle of the Island!

Plus, some of the roads are single tracks which means that driving takes a lot more time.

So, I am sorry, but it is not possible to visit the Isle of Skye on a day trip from Edinburgh….

How to visit the Isle of Skye – Tips

Option 1 – touring the isle of skye on a road trip – self-drive tour.

The absolute best way to discover the Isle of Skye is to rent a car and do a road trip on your own. This way you can stop whenever you like the scenery and you can explore out off the beaten path locations such as the magnificent untouched Loch Coruisk . If you choose that option, head to my article about all the Things to do on the Isle of Skye .

OPTION 2 – Join an organized Isle of Skye Tour

The other option for those not willing to rent a car and drive is to book an organized tour. Small group tours are the best because you can stop more often and have more time at each location, plus the itinerary is flexible depending on the group.

Road to Skye - Scotland Isle of Skye Tours from Glasgow or Edinburgh

Pros of an Organized Skye island Tour:

  • The road is scenic almost all the time. In the bus, you will be able to enjoy it the whole way (tip: while driving through Glencoe towards the Isle of Skye, sit on the left side of the minibus).
  • You get a lot of information about the history of Scotland and what you are seeing (which you don’t have in the car unless your partner/friend is a history teacher…)
  • Scottish Tour guides are famous for being very funny

Good to know before your Tour of Skye Island:

  • Whatever tour you choose, there will be lots of driving to get to the Isle of Skye and to drive around the Isle of Skye
  • You can only see a selection of the best spots on the island – but it will already be enough to blow your mind

Such tours depart from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness.

Options to Consider for Skye Island Tours

A I wrote earlier, there are no one day tours of Skye from Edinburgh possible. But you still have several options possible:

  • Set up base in Edinburgh and book a 3- or 4-day tour to the Isle of Skye (different return options possible)
  • Set up base in Glasgow and book a 3-day tour to the Isle of Skye
  • Arrive in Inverness by cruise and do a one-day trip to Loch Ness and the South of the Isle of Skye
  • Take the bus to Portree, the main town on the Isle of Skye and book day trips from there to see the highlights of the Highlands or complete a guided hike

With all those criteria you will find below some suggestions to book your Isle of Skye Tour depending on your criteria.

– On the way through Glencoe towards Skye, sit on the left side of the bus – On the way around Loch Ness when driving back from Skye, sit on the right side of the bus

Fun Alternative – Edinburgh to Isle of Skye Tour 3 days (with train)

About the program.

Another company offers a similar tour but will a small twist: on your way back, you can ride on the Jacobite train, the famous Harry Potter train with amazing views of the “Road to the isles” and traveling on the Glenfinnan viaduct.

It is great scenery, and nice to break from the bus a little. But that means not covering the Glencoe area, as it is replaced by the train.

Best Scottish Highlands & Skye Tours – 4 or 5 days

About the 4-day program.

If you are lucky to have one more day, you can book a 4-day tour to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh to spend a little bit more time admiring the West Highlands before getting to the island.

View from Mallaig towards the Isle of Skye

This way you get both Glencoe and the Road to to the isle with the Glenfinnan viaduct (but by bus not train). You will reach the isle of Skye with the ferry from Mallaig. If the day is clear, the views of the Cuillin mountains will be fantastic. So much scenery in 4 days!

5-day Highland and Skye Tour

And if you have even longer, check out this 5 day trip to the Isle of Skye and the Highlands

You will see a lot of the most magnificent scenery in Scotland.

Best One-day Isle of Skye Tour from Inverness

Red Cuillin Mountains

If you are stopping in Scotland and you cruise, your best option is to do a day tour from Inverness. You will not see the whole island, but you will be able to admire a lot of the Highland scenery with:

  • The Loch Ness and its monster
  • The Road to Skye and 5 sisters of Kintail in Glen Shiel
  • The famous Eilean Donan Castle
  • The South of Skye Island with the red Cuillin Mountains towards what I think if one of the best views in Skye: The view from the town of Elgol

But you can also consider taking the bus or train to take this tour as it takes you to another part of the Isle of Skye which is also magnificent and less touristy.

Best Isle of Skye tours from Portree

If you like more control, another solution is for you to take the bus to the Isle of Skye, organize your own accommodation in Portree (see my suggestions on the Scotland Accommodation Article ) and book day trips from there.

Tour Itinerary

Tour information, tour route map.

On our Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh we travel via Glasgow to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. We’ll make our first stop at the charming village of Luss which sits on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Sparkling lochs, tumbling waterfalls and majestic Munros takes us to Rannoch Moor and Glencoe. We’ll stop at Scotland’s most famous glen and hear about the infamous Glencoe Massacre of 1692, when the MacDonald’s were slaughtered by the Campbells.

At Glenfinnan we’ll climb up to the viewpoint for stunning views of Glenfinnan and Loch Shiel. You’ll see the 21 arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct curve through the glen as the route to Harry Potter’s Hogwarts.

We’ll get off the beaten track for views over Loch Duich and the Five Sisters of Kintail before travelling over the bridge to the Isle of Skye.

Glencoe

Your friendly driver-guide has the flexibility to ensure you see the best of the island whatever the weather. Skye never disappoints – there is just so much to see.

You can’t miss Skye’s Mountain range, the Black Cuillins, which adorn calendars and paintings the world over. The sparkling crystal-clear waters of the Fairy Pools lie at the foot of the Cuillins and make for great photos, or even a spot of wild swimming!

We’ll have time to explore Portee and enjoy some lunch before we head to the Trotternish Peninsula. The awe-inspiring scenery never seems to stop, and we’ll get spectacular views at the Quiraing, Mealt Falls and Kilt Rock before we reach the famous landscape of the Old Man of Storr.

Fairy Glen

We cross the Skye Bridge on to the mainland and Eilean Donan Castle*. The castle sits on an island at a point where three great sea lochs meet, surrounded by majestic highland scenery. Eilean Donan was used in many films including Highlander and James Bond epic, The World is Not Enough.

The village of Fort Augustus lies at the southern end of Loch Ness and is lunch stop. You can enjoy an optional cruise on Loch Ness or take a stroll along the Caledonian Canal.

Our journey continues through the Cairngorms National Park, passing Blair Castle to Pitlochry for our final refreshment stop of the day. We return to Scotland’s capital city Edinburgh via the Queensferry crossing ending our 3-day Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh.

22/03/23 – Helen and Whitney-May

This was just the most wonderful experience and I would like to commend you and Jerry (our tour guide) on what will likely be the absolute highlight of our trip to the UK (we still have a little while here but you’re going to be hard to beat!) A million thank you’s for this experience. It was all round amazing, from every annoying enquiry I sent last minute to the office, through to the on-the-ground offering. The carefully researched commentary, lovely bus, caring on time guest service levels provided by Jerry and well, the scenery -though not your making 🙂 –  was next level heavenly. I cannot recommend your tour more highly! Warm regards.

17/03/23 – Taylor

We LOVED our tour with Discover Scotland! Our guide Michael was amazing we could not have ask for anyone better. We enjoyed our whole trip from the bus rides hearing stories, history, songs and much more about Scotland, to our quick picture stops, all our longer spots where we had time to explore, and our free time in Kyleakin.  We felt like our interests were heard by our guide and we were given options and suggestions to do things we would enjoy.  The only thing we wished we could change was staying longer. We are very thankful for our guide and discover scotland for everything. Thanks for everything

02 /11/ 22 – Sergio

I had a wonderful time with Discover Scotland Tours. We had an amazing tour guide also our driver named Jerry! The tour had plenty of photographic stops from day 1. Driving through the Highlands into the Isle of Skye and to Loch ness the group and I could feel the magic Scottish atmosphere. Thank you Jerry for taking care of every single one of us and thank you Discover Scotland Tours for this fantastic experience.

10/10/22 – Vanessa

We had an amazing time! John our guide was perfect! I can’t say enough good things about him! He obviously loves his job and the island.  I appreciated how you kept in touch with me leading up to the tour and how responsive and clearly  you answered my questions. I will most definitely recommend John Black and your company to everyone willing to hear me go on about what an amazing experience we had. Thank you for everything and with some luck we will be making more plans with your company.

19/08/22 – Kylie + Corbin

Our 3-day Isle of Skye tour with Scott was unforgettable! Despite road closures to start the trip, Scott maintained positivity that radiated throughout the group. Each day brought adventure and memories that we will always cherish. It’s easy to see that Scott loves people and Scotland as he went out of his way to make sure everyone got to see and do what they set out to. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and guide!

02/08/22 – Angelina

My friends and I recently went on the Isle of Skye, Highlands, and Loch Ness 3-day tour from Edinburgh, and it was the highlight of our vacation! Our tour guide, John Black, was quite the character. Throughout the whole trip, he was super cheery and always cracking jokes. His personal anecdotes, vast knowledge, and captivating story-telling provided us with a unique glimpse into the Scottish people, culture, and history. John was extremely accommodating for everyone on the tour, making frequent stops for bathroom breaks and food throughout the day. The bus itself was very comfortable, with AC and plenty of space for everyone, and had great views no matter where one sat. Our accommodation was booked through Discover Scotland as well, at Winklebeech bnb in Kyleakin. It had a quaint and homey vibe, and the owner was super welcoming. She was also extremely accommodating to our dietary restrictions and even offered us some bug spray after seeing all of our midge bites! The rooms were tidy and comfortable, with all the necessities one may need. We managed to hit all the destinations on the tour, and it ran very smoothly with no delays. We were especially in awe with the Isle of Skye- It’s a must-see for everyone who visits Scotland! Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend Discover Scotland Tours and would visit again in a heartbeat!

28 /07/22 – Roxanne

We had a wonderful time and it was through this tour that Scotland came alive for us. Our Tour Leader made a point of getting to know each of us. In between the gorgeous countryside and  the historical background Michael provided, he played songs told amusing stories and made it us feel like we were all part of one family. There were lots of stops for the bathroom and food as well. He was patient answering all of our questions and was respectful of the country’s we came from. We loved this tour and will be talking about it for quite some time. Also good value for our money.

11/07/22 – Darryl

We were very happy with our three day tour. This being our first, and probably only trip to Scotland, we appreciated the variety of things we saw and the general information about your country.

We were especially impressed with our tour guide, John Sheedy. In addition to being an all-around nice guy, he was very attentive to everyone’s needs and well prepared with interesting stories. Having grown up on the isle of Skye was a bonus. John conveyed his genuine love and pride of Scotland and made our trip fun and comfortable.

01/07/22 – Jessica

Mark and I had THE BEST weekend. It’s my first time in Scotland, and although it was a whirlwind, I’m excited to get back and spend more time in certain places. Accommodation was great, Garry was FANTASTIC. So warm and bubbly and knowledgeable and fun.  We’re both quite introverted and I was overwhelmed and missing my children and we never once felt pressured or intruded on, but also Garry made us both feel so seen and included, I was so grateful for how he handled us. Lots of stops, would be good to have a bit more time in some places, but I also really liked ticking lots of things off my list. It was also really relaxing, I slept on the bus all the time – as a parent it was just so lovely to not have to worry about ANYTHING.  Garry added a few fun things in that I wasn’t expecting which was so great! Lots of Harry Potter stops! A DINOSAUR FOOTPRINT! I just loved every minute.  I would do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you add some northern Scotland tours! Let me know if you do.

10/06/22 – Gráinne

My tour was the Isle of Skye, the Highlands & Loch Ness 3 day tour with Gary. The itinerary was great. Loved all the stops. Loads of time at each stop , didn’t feel rushed. Our tour guide, Gary, was fantastic. He had loads of fun facts and quips and kept us all motivated even though the weather was against us. Will definitely recommend Gary and the tour to anyone!

The village has some restaurants for evening dining and a shop should you require any necessities.

What about my accommodation?

Your tour excludes accommodation. During the tour booking process you will be asked if you are booking your own accommodation or whether you wish us to reserve this on your behalf?

Please contact us to let us know the name of the accommodation you have reserved.

Above all, please ensure you are ready in plenty of time each morning.

Will I be able to pay by credit card while on tour?

In the Scottish Highlands many businesses do not accept card; particularly in rural areas where mobile signals are not very strong. Your driver will also take cash payment for any optional extras. Therefore, it is best to bring cash with you.

There are cash machines on route should you require to take out money while on tour.

Can I reserve a specific seat on the mini coach?

Seats are chosen on a first come first serve basis, we are unable to take requests for specific seats. Our mini coaches all have panoramic windows so the beautiful Scottish landscape can always be enjoyed, no matter where you sit.

If you suffer from motion sickness, then you may be affected by the roads in Scotland. They can be twisty and narrow. It’s best to come prepared with a travel sickness preventative, whether that be medicinal, wristbands or another option, to ensure it doesn’t impact your overall enjoyment of the tour.

A spectacular route north…

You’ll depart Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, or its largest city, Glasgow, and begin the journey north. Our route to Skye takes you via Loch Lomond via the Trossachs National Park . We’ll stop in a picturesque village, where you can relax over a cup of coffee or explore at your leisure. You’ll get stunning views of the UK’s largest expanse of fresh water, Loch Lomond. Your driver-guide will tell you the history and theories behind the ‘The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond’ song as you enjoy the stunning scenery of this area.

Cross the brooding expanse of Rannoch Moor and journey through Glen Coe…

As you continue further north into the Scottish Highlands, you’ll watch in awe as the landscape becomes more and more dramatic. Glen Coe is one of the most incredible places in Scotland. Learn the brutal story of the MacDonald Clan massacre and take in the weeping waterfalls that inhabit this incredible glen.

Fort William for lunch and Britain’s tallest mountain…

This highland town of Fort William marks the end of Scotland’s oldest and most popular long-distance walks, The West Highland Way. Here, you can take in views of Ben Nevis , the UK’s tallest peak. Standing at 1,345 metres above sea level, it is often known to both locals and visitors as simply ‘the Ben’.

Overnight: Inverness

A full day on the incredible Isle of Skye…

Your experienced and knowledgeable guide will ensure you get the most out of your day based on a variety of things such as the weather, your group and local events. You will enjoy sights such as the craggy Cuillin Mountains . The sharp peaks which rise up from the flatness of the surrounding terrain are the dominating feature of the island and can be seen from every other peninsula on Skye.

Lunch in Portree, Skye’s capital…

We will also include a stop at Portree, the colourful capital of Skye. Overlooking a sheltered bay, this scenic fishing village has a variety of food options, making it a perfect lunch spot.

Experience Skye’s dramatic landscapes…

We will also explore the Trotternish Peninsula . It is the most northerly of Skye’s peninsulas and it contains some of the most striking landscapes in Scotland. Here we will stop for photographs at The Kilt Rock ,  Mealt Waterfall and The Old Man of Storr .

Explore Urquhart Castle perched on the edge of Loch Ness…

Our day begins by visiting the most famous loch in the entire world… Loch Ness . It’s also one of Scotland’s largest, so large that every other lake and river in England and Wales could fit in with room to spare. In fact, the entire population of the world could fit into Loch Ness, and it’s got a monster in it too!

Cruise on Loch Ness and look out for the famous monster Nessie…

You can then hop on a Jacobite Cruise * to Nessie spot on the loch itself. As well as being very large and deep, Loch Ness has heavy deposits of peat, making it difficult for instruments to locate Nessie in the cloudy water — a perfect hiding location for a huge water-dwelling monster.

Explore the famous battlefield of Culloden…

Our next stop is at Culloden Battlefield *, the site of the last stand of the Jacobites against the British government forces on 16 April 1746. It was one of the most harrowing battles in British history. Jacobite supporters, seeking to re-establish the Stuart monarchy to the British thrones, joined together to fight the Duke of Cumberland’s government troops. It was the final pitched battle on British soil and, in less than an hour, around 1,600 men were slain – 1,500 of them Jacobites. You can experience everything about the events leading up to, during and after the battle in the impressive visitor centre and interactive exhibition, as well as having the chance to wander the land where the battle itself took place.

Wander the picturesque Highland town of Pitlochry…

We’ll then continue south to Pitlochry ; the geographical centre of Scotland and one of the gateways to the Highlands perched by the side of the River Tummel. Pitlochry has been a tourist centre since the 1860s thanks to Queen Victoria and Sir Walter Scott, who popularised the Highlands that boomed with the railways of the 1870s. We’ll then continue south to Edinburgh city centre, where our tour will end.**

*Please note that availability for the Jacobite Cruise may vary depending on season

**You may be provided with a complimentary train ticket for return to Glasgow

We had a great experience on our tour. Our tour guide Iain was thorough, well informed and funny. He made sure that our group found all of the best photo opportunities and even took us on some side adventures. He went out of his way to make sure we were safe, happy and got to feed the hairy coos! Highly recommended!

As a New Zealander, I learned the sad and tragic history of Scotland and its people, especially after visiting the battlefield at Culloden- and my heart was touched, and drawn out in sympathy for these brave warriors of old. Our tour guide, Steven B, was passionate about the history of his people, and he shared it amazingly well, so much so that you could not help but feel for him and his people. I have come to love and appreciate the Scots. The Highlands were stunningly beautiful, especially the Isle of Skye - and we had perfect weather the whole time.

I really couldn’t say enough good things about this tour. Our guide Alex was professional, knowledgeable, kind, and very funny. He took us to see as much as we could within reason and added extra if he could. Alex went above and beyond to make this a great experience and it truly was. It was so fascinating learning about the country and culture from a true native. The bed and breakfast was nice with a great selection of breakfast. Would highly recommend!

One Day Isle of Skye Itinerary

It’s time to start your Skye adventure, and what better way is there to do so than by chasing pixies at the famous Fairy Pools. This beautiful collection of waterfalls and plunge pools sit at the foothills of the Cuillin Mountains , a short walk from the nearby car park. Plucked straight out of a fantasy fiction novel, the crystal-clear water from the mountains flows between a collection of pools of various shapes and sizes.

Pack your swim gear (if you dare to face the bitter cold) and make your way along the 30-minute walk from the car park to the pools. There are plenty of places to stop and admire the natural beauty around you as you follow the path to the Fairy Pools. The first waterfall sits around 2km along this path, which is quickly followed by the rest of the collection of waterfalls.

Swimming is allowed in these pools, however, the water rarely rises to a comfortable temperature so a wetsuit might be advisable if you want to refresh yourself for the day ahead.

Fairy Pools skye

The largest town on the island, Portree is a popular stop off point for visitors to the island. Built into the natural harbour of the eastern shore, the high cliffs that surround the dock provide beautiful views out over the bay. The seaside feel and the old-fashioned buildings give Portree a cute and homely feel to it.

If you walk up the hill to the south end of the village, you will find a vantage point named “The Lump”. This high point offers spectacular views of the surrounding bay and town behind you.

The town of Portree is a must in any Isle of Skye itinerary.

Once you have explored the quaint streets of Portree, it is time to fuel up before the afternoon’s adventures. The cute cafe named “the Granary” is located in the centre of Portree and is the perfect spot to heat up and enjoy the delicious food Skye has to offer.

Choose from a huge selection of freshly caught seafood that Scotland does so well, or simply have a lighter bite to eat with a homemade cake and coffee.

The Old Man of Storr

Fabled resting place of the Giant of Trottenish Ridge, the Old Man of Storr is said to be the burial ground. Sticking up from the earth, the Old Man pinnacle is rumoured to be thumb of the giant, the only part of the body remaining above the ground. This is just one of many folklore and tales as to the origin of the incredible stacks of Storr.

The basalt columns sitting 2300ft above sea level are another hugely popular sight on the Isle of Skye. Located just 6miles from Portree, the hike to get to the viewing platform for the Old Man of Storr will take you roughly 1hr and 15mins. It is a pretty steep climb, so be sure to pack your hiking shoes and a camera, as the view is definitely worth it.

At the top, you will reach a plateau that sits high above the surrounding landscape. Views across the sea to the mainland, highlighting the jagged, rough and rugged landscape that the west coast of Scotland is famous for. The 50m tall stacks in front of you are the main feature, named the “Old Man” due to the apparent resemblance of the outline to an old man.

Soak up the views from this platform and reflect on the natural beauty that this incredible island has shown today. Although the trip has come to an end, you will definitely be coming back for more some day.

Places to visit if you plan a longer visit to the Isle of Skye

If you plan to extend your trip to Skye and are planning a 2 day Isle of Skye itinerary, 3 day Isle of Skye itinerary or perhaps an even longer 4-day itinerary for the Isle of Skye there are additional places we recommend considering including (if you take a Skye tour you will find many of these attractions are part of the tour)

Fairy Glen is one of the most well-known and photographed natural rock formations in Scotland. It’s about a two-mile walk from Portree, the capital of Skye. The best way to find it is to take the footpath south out of town towards Dunvegan, past the Skye Brewery and Cill Chriosd, then up and over Lùb Mòr to reach The Fairy Loch. Once you’re at Fairy Glen, there are lots of places to explore and views to admire!

Here are some tips for visiting:

– Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water with you

– Don’t climb on the rocks – not only is it dangerous, but you will also destroy the fairy’s homes!

Fairy Glen.

Dunvegan Castle is more than 1000 years old. It’s the home of Clan MacLeod, and one of Scotland’s oldest inhabited castles, so it has some great stories to tell!

Try to see as many of these features as you can:

– The Fairy Flag – find out about this mysterious flag that only flies on the day a Fairy Flag bearer dies.

– The Fairy Tree – find out how it got its name and when it was planted.

– Dunvegan Castle is also home to the oldest example of Gaelic writing in the world, which you can see inside.

Dunvegan Castle

The Quiraing is another rock formation that has a fascinating story. It’s a landslip on the eastern side of Meall na Suiramach, which includes a variety of peaks and rock formations. It’s between Staffin and Uig, about three miles south of the village.

The Quiraing consists of a series of rocky pinnacles which make an extraordinary sight as they rise out of the moor. It includes precipitous rock faces and covers about 2000 acres. The best way to get there is by turning off the A855 onto the B880, then continue onto the A87.

A famous landmark of Skye that can be seen from here is The Needle – a jagged rock tower that stands on the summit of Sgùrr Alasdair. This mountain is named after Alexander Nicolson, who was known as ‘Alasdair Crotach’, and was the last clan chief of Clan MacLeod. He built a memorial cairn on top of it in memory of his nephew, who died during the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

The Quiraing.

Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls are a short, half-mile walk from Staffin. The falls themselves aren’t huge, but they’re beautiful and unusual because they flow over red sandstone!

There’s a lovely view of the falls, and you can also see Kilt Rock – a narrow stack shaped like a kilt. This is where staffin – the Gaelic word for ‘trousers’ – comes from.

Kilt Rock

Duntulm Castle is in the north west of Skye, near Dunvegan. Built around the 13th century by Clan MacLeod, it was once an important stronghold. You can still see plenty of the castle’s original features.

Neist Point Lighthouse stands at the most northerly point on Skye. It’s a five-mile round trip from Carbost, and it’s absolutely stunning!

There’s also an Interpretation Centre with tons of information about the lighthouse itself.

Skye Museum of Island Life tells the story of Skye’s people through the centuries. It’s in Portree, and it’s free!

Talisker is one of the best known and most popular single malt whiskies in the world, produced on Skye. The whisky distillery is open for tours! The distillery is located in Carbost near the Skye Museum of Island Life.

Planning your visit to Skye

You will need a car to travel to (and around) the Isle of Skye. The only alternative would be to book an organised tour if you prefer not to drive.

The Isle of Skye is connected to Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland of Scotland by the Skye bridge , via the island of Eilean Ban. Located at the southern end of the island, this bridge is free to use and is by far the easiest way to get onto the island.

If you are heading to the Isle of Skye from Scotland’s largest cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh, the drive to the island will take you around 5-5½ hours. It makes sense to stay overnight on the island in either one of the many B&Bs or hotels, or at one of the camping sites around the island.

If you are planning to stay more than one day it is essential to book accommodation in advance as the island is very busy during the summer months.

Click here to find all the best deals for accommodation on the Isle of Skye.

Highland cow

When it comes to weather in Scotland, there is no such thing as being too prepared. It is not uncommon to experience snow, hail, rain, wind and sunshine all within the hour in Scotland, especially when you venture to the rugged north.

We recommend packing warm layers of clothes , easy to remove and easy to layer up in case the temperature changes whilst you are out. A good waterproof is perhaps the most important item to pack, as are a good pair of walking shoes. If you are going in the winter, full winter gear will be required, such as a hat, gloves, scarves and plenty of warm layers.

If you are going to hike around the mountains of Skye, we cannot stress enough the importance of being prepared for the worst. Due to the rapid change in weather conditions in Scotland, it is very common for hikers to head to the hills unprepared and unfamiliar with the landscape, and soon after need rescued from these conditions.

Pack a compass, map and head torch and make sure you know how to use all of them.

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

We advise you take out travel insurance.

How to get from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye (all options)

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: February 4, 2024

Discover the best ways to get from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye including public transport, driving and tour options.

The Isle of Skye is both the northernmost and largest of all the major islands in the Inner Hebrides and a must-visit destination on any Scotland tour.

Blessed with a rugged, hilly landscape, a smattering of quaint fishing villages and the ruins of many a medieval castle, a Skye tour road trip is the gift that keeps on giving.

With outstanding natural formations like Kilt Rock, the old man of Storr, Trotternish Peninsula, the fairy glen and the mystical fairy pools, you’ll be a wee bit blown away by all the outstanding natural beauty of the island.

It’s a world away from the big mainland cities of Edinburgh , Glasgow and Aberdeen, and with towns like Portree – with its quaint harbourside boutiques, cafes and bars – as well as Dunvegan, Uig and Broadford, you’ll get a fascinating insight into the local way of life.

When it comes to planning your Scotland itinerary, you won’t need to go to the lengths that Bonnie Prince Charlie did to get there!

Instead, we’ll outline full details and travel tips on how to get there and what to do when you arrive on the Isle of Skye. So you can really make the most of your day trips, three-day tours or longer trip there.

Prefer a private driver-guided tour to take you to Skye and beyond? We recommend this 3 day Skye tour with award-winning Edinburgh Black Cab Tours which will take you to Eileen Donan Castle, The Old Man of Storr, The Quiraing, Fairy Pools, Sligachan Old Bridge, The Fairy Glen, Neist Point Lighthouse, Kilt Rock, Portree, Talisker Distillery, and Dunvegan Castle.

Map showing routes from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye.

When to visit the Isle of Skye

What transportation methods do you prefer, what do you want to see along the route, how long do you want to spend on skye, by train + ferry (mallaig to armadale), by train + tour or public transport (kyle of lochalsh + skye bridge option), answers to frequently asked questions about travelling to skye from edinburgh, how will you visit the isle of skye from edinburgh, considerations when choosing the best way to get from edinburgh to isle of skye.

If you want to visit the Isle of Skye or any part of Northern Scotland on a multi-day tour for that matter, there are plenty of things you need to consider.

Firstly, you’ll need to decide when you will visit the island. Whilst the isle of Skye is accessible all year round, many of its main attractions like the fairy pools, fairy glen and the Old Man of Torr might not be so easy to get to in the winter if affected by snow or heavy rain. Roads, especially some back roads, might be a bit more difficult to drive as well.

Therefore it’s probably best to time your trip between the months of May to September. Although for the best weather July and August are undoubtedly the best times to go.

However, this is peak season and coincides with the school holidays. So prices for accommodation on Skye , as well as ticket prices for day trips, or a guided tour, are likely to be much more expensive, not to mention higher in demand.

Scenic Isle of Skye.

Once you have decided when you will go to the Isle of Skye, the next thing to work out is how you will get there.

Will you drive there all the way from Edinburgh? Or would you prefer to take a combination of train or ferry and bus via another destination like Inverness or Fort William ?

If you are intending to drive to Skye, will you be hiring a car?

Are there other landmarks in Scotland would you like to see en route from Edinburgh?

This is an important factor because if you want to stop off at Loch Lomond, visit Urquhart Castle or Eilean Donan castle, head to Fort Augustus or the Caledonian Canal, or even go past Loch Ness, this will determine how long your journey takes (you will need to factor in at least an hour at some of them) and what driving route you will have to follow.

Woman standing in front of a sign which. read Loch Ness

Lastly, you will also have to consider how many nights you want to stay on Skye and whether you will be doing a guided tour or day trips whilst you are there. This will determine the overall length of your tour journey to the island.

During your time in Scotland, if you want to head to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh, driving is by far the easiest way to do that.

The beauty of a trip like this is that you don’t need the services of a tour guide. Instead, if you do your research you can create a highly personalised itinerary based on the places that interest you the most.

For instance, if you want to see fantastic scenery, a drive through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, as well as Glen Coe, is a must. You can do this from Edinburgh by taking the A82.

Harry Potter fan s might also choose this route for the chance to see the Hogwarts Express Jacobite steam train , that runs between Fort William and Mallaig in the series of Harry Potter films.

Alternatively, if you wanted to head to visit Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, you could do so by travelling along the A9. For both routes, you will need to join the A87 to the Isle of Skye.

Although it can be a bit daunting travelling on foreign roads if you are an international driver don’t worry, most of these routes will take you along motorways or dual carriageway, which makes driving a breeze – especially if you have a good GPS or satellite navigation system.

Whichever route you decide to take on your journey from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye, set aside at least one full day for doing this, as you will want to stop off several times to take in the wonderful scenery in this part of Scotland.

For those who want to take the ferry to the Isle of Skye, your best option is to take the train from Edinburgh (Waverley) to Mallaig in the Highlands of Scotland, and then get a ferry from there to Armadale.

Located on the west coast, it typically takes between 7 to 9 hours to complete this journey. But as the first train leaves Edinburgh at 7.15 am, and the last ferry departs Armadale at 6.10 pm it is doable in a day.

However, should you prefer, you could always stay overnight at Fort William before catching the ferry ride the next day – which takes between 45 minutes and one hour.

The ferry ride is a wonderful experience, and well worth doing on account of the fantastic scenery you will be able to take in. If you can strike up a conversation on the way with a friendly local all the better, as they will act as a fantastic tour guide.

Please note, that public transport is limited at Armadale, so it is advisable to pre-book a taxi for when you get there. There are buses that run but it can be tricky to get exact information – often these seem to run in the summer months and coincide with the ferry services.

Mallaig to Armadale ferry.

An alternate way to get to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh is to take the train to Inverness. This will take the best part of 4 hours.

From there you can then take a train to the Kyle of Lochalsh which takes approximately 2 hours 40 minutes. The Kyle Railway Line is a wonderfully scenic train journey (one of our favourite train trips in the UK )

Alternatively catch a bus from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, which is about a 2-hour and 15-minute trip, before taking another bus over the Skye Bridge to Portree, or other parts of the island.

This is a good option for visitors to Scotland who do not want to hire a car. There are opportunities for day trips from Inverness too via bus or tour for those without their own vehicle.

Once on Skye, there is public transport available that will take you around the island or alternatively book a tour from your accommodation.

For bus timetables consult Citylink which operates between the Kyle of Lochalsh and destinations on Skye.

Q. Is there a train from the Isle of Skye to Edinburgh?

A. Unfortunately, a direct train does not run from a departure point of Edinburgh to Isle of Skye.

That said, you can get direct trains from Edinburgh to Inverness. From there you can then take the scenic 82-mile Kyle Line to the Kyle of Lochalsh – via Glen Carron and Plockton. Once there you will need to hire a taxi to take you over the Skye Bridge to your destination on the island, catch a bus or pick up a day tour.

Q. Can you fly from the Isle of Skye to Edinburgh?

A. Although the isle has a tiny airfield next to the small town of Ashaig, (which you might recognise from the opening scene of the 1980 film Flash Gordon ) it does not operate commercial flights. Instead, it occasionally is used to transport patients to hospitals in other parts of Scotland like Glasgow or Inverness, by the Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS Highland.

The closest airports near the Isle of Skye, from which you can fly from Edinburgh airport, are Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis and Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides . Both of which offer car hire and other transport links from either the airport or main town.

Q. Can you do a day tour to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh?

A. It is not viable to do a day tour from either Glasgow or Edinburgh to the Island of Skye unless you have a very early start! Once you leave Edinburgh, driving non-stop to the Isle of Skye will take a journey time of approximately 5 hours one way. So a return trip of 10 hours would be a very long journey, and not give you very much time to see any of the island’s main attractions. Namely Dunvegan Castle, Cuillin Mountains, Trotternish Peninsula, Kilt Rock or the Old Man of Storr, on a Skye tour.

Besides, unless you are pressed for time, you’ll be able to see the likes of Dunvegan Castle, the Grampian Mountains, Hogwarts Express, Ben Nevis, Urquhart castle, Glen Shiel, Loch Ness and the Scottish Highlands, depending on which way you drive there.

Q. How long is the train ride from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye?

A. There is no direct train from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye.

However, you can take a train from Edinburgh to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands which takes about four hours.

From there you can either hire a car and drive , or take a bus, through Northern Scotland and over the Skye Bridge to the island. This journey takes a further three to four hours. Depending on what time you arrive, you might need to stay in Inverness overnight.

Q. Is Isle of Skye worth visiting?

A. The Isle of Skye is well worth heading to when you visit Scotland and you will have an amazing time if you do go there, especially in the summer months.

Not only will you see dramatic landscapes like the Trotternish Peninsula, as well as rolling hills and stunning views, but you will also get to visit bucket list items like Dunvegan Castle, Armadale Castle, the Old Man of Storr, Elgol Beach, Kilt Rock and the old town of Portree on your Skye tour.

Scenic views in Skye Scotland.

Q. How do you get to Isle of Skye Scotland?

A. The Isle of Skye is one of the most popular destinations to go to on Scotland tours. The easiest way to get there from Edinburgh is to drive.

You can hire a car from the main city centre near Edinburgh Castle. Depending on which route you decide to take you could also see Loch Lomond, Trossachs National Park, Glen Shiel, Ben Nevis or the Scottish Highlands along the way. You can even search for the Loch Ness Monster too!

Alternatively, if you are unable to do a driving route, you can get a train to Inverness from Edinburgh and get a bus from near the car park at the station there. Unfortunately, there are no direct trains or direct buses to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh.

For every visitor to Scotland, a trip to the Isle of Skye is an absolute must. Blessed with stark, rugged landscapes and a rich history that goes back centuries, the island is as captivating as it is beautiful.

Quite simply, you’d be hard-pressed to name another place that is like it in the world. (Go on, we’ll wait!)

One thing is for sure though, whether it is Kilt Rock, the Old Man of Storr, the Trotternish Peninsula or Elgol Beach you visit, Skye is an island that will forever own a little piece of your heart.

Much like the rest of Scotland really.

Day 1: Edinburgh

Begin your Scottish adventure in the capital and historic wonder of Edinburgh. After arriving either by air or maybe by train from London, check into your hotel to relax and decompress. I recommend the Balmoral Hotel, Waldorf Astoria — The Caledonian or Kimpton Charlotte Square. After settling in, take a cab up to Calton Hill to explore. Even better if you can get there a little while before sunset for the amazing views. Head back down the hill for dinner at Dishoom to enjoy some delicious Indian cuisine.

Day 2: Hike Arthur’s Seat and Harry Potter Walking Tour

If you are an early riser, you will want to head to Arthur’s Seat for a spectacular hike. About 2 and a half miles long in total, the crest of this hike will give you another incredible viewpoint of Edinburgh. After, you may want to check out the National Museum of Scotland, the Writer’s Museum or if you are traveling with kids, Camera Obscura - an interactive journey through optical illusions and mind-bending exhibits. You could also take a Harry Potter Walking Tour through the city or explore Greyfriar’s Kirkyard dating back to the late 1500s. Try dinner at Scran & Scallie in the Stockbridge neighborhood for traditional Scottish plus fare with modern innovation in a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Day 3: Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile

Start your day with a tour of Edinburgh Castle. Perched majestically atop an ancient volcanic rock, Edinburgh Castle stands as a symbol of Scotland's rich history and offers breathtaking views of the city below. Later, enjoy lunch at a pub like Piper’s Rest and try a “Whiskey & Tales Tour” for part Scotch Whiskey tasting and part traditional storytelling. For the rest of the day, you can walk Victoria Street and check out all the unique shops, meander the Royal Mile or take a stroll to Dean Village before heading back to your hotel. Try The Witchery for dinner, located inside a 16th-century merchant’s house filled with enchanting ambiance and culinary delights. Just be sure to make reservations!

Day 4: Head to the Highlands

Pick up your rental car and get situated — it’s time to head to the highlands. Today you’ll be driving to Inverness, the capital of the highlands. Your drive time will be a little over three hours in total, but you can break that up with some of these great stops. To start, head to Pitolchry for lunch (about 1.5 hrs drive). Try Port-na-Craig Inn & Restaurant for a meal on the river Tummel. Before or after lunch, you may want to walk around a bit, cross the suspension bridge or check out the Pitolchry Dam Visitor Center. With about half of your drive left, you’ll be entering Cairngorms National Park.

If you’ve got your heart set on seeing some hairy coos (the adorable highland cows) you may want to stop at Rothiemurchus Farms for their “ Hairy Coo Safari ,” about an hour's drive from Pitolchry. After that, it’s onward to your Inverness accommodations. I recommend Ness Walk for a 5-star luxury stay that will wow you from the start, trust me.

If it’s not too late, I recommend checking out Clava Cairns & Culloden Battlefield before dinner. You can have a fabulous meal at Torrish Restaurant (at Ness Walk) or walk along the river into town and choose whatever sounds good.

Day 5: Loch Ness and Eilean Donan Castle

After breakfast at Ness Walk which, I do highly recommend, head to Loch Ness (about a 15 min drive) for a 1-hour boat cruise. You may want to bundle up as it can be cold on the water. Catch views of Urquhart Castle and the elusive Nessie if you can. If you are an Outlander fan, you can take a 25 min detour to Beauly Priory & Beaufort Castle after the Loch Ness Cruise. From there it’s 1.5 hours to your next stop, the unmissable Eilean Donan Castle. Note that you will need to pay for parking here and purchase a ticket to the castle if you would like to cross the bridge and go inside. This iconic castle dates back to the 13th century and is so rich in history that walking around its interior will transport you to another time.

Your final destination for the day is Portree on the Isle of Skye — about an hour's drive from the castle. I recommend Cuillin Hills Hotel, Boseville Hotel or Sligachan Hotel (about eight miles from Portree). For a fine dining experience, have dinner at Scorrybreac Restaurant or check out Dulse & Brose at the Boseville. Be sure to make dinner reservations ahead of time no matter where you plan to eat in Portree.

Day 6: Isle of Skye

Take today to explore the Isle of Skye (in your hiking boots, if possible). I recommend driving the Trotternish Peninsula — about 1.5 hrs drive time in total without stops — but you will definitely want to stop and check out the natural beauty of this island. My highlight list includes Old Man of Storr (it takes about 1.5 hrs to complete the hike if you are up for it), Lealt Falls & Kilt Rock, Quirang Lookout, Skye Museum of Island Life & Flora MacDonald’s Grave & Fairy Glen (spend some time walking around this area — it’s magical).

Note: parking lots can fill up fast during peak season (July & August). I recommend heading out early for the best experience. There are also not many places to stop and eat on this drive. You may want to swing by “Co-op Food” in Portree for some provisions as you head out or you can pause for a meal at Columba 1400 in Staffin.

Enjoy a shower and dinner back in Portree. Get a good night’s sleep after a full day of exploring.

Day 7: Drive to Armadale

In the morning, drive to Armadale (about an hour) where you will catch a ferry to Mallaig. Book your tickets in advance. If time permits, you can take a detour to the Fairy Pools on the way or spend some time checking out the Armadale Castle, Gardens & Museum. After the ferry ride, grab lunch in Mallaig. Try The Cabin Restaurant & Takeaway

Continuing on your road trip, you will drive from Mallaig to the Glenfinnan Viaduct (about 40 min). If you want to see the “Hogwarts Express” cross the viaduct (otherwise known as the Jacobite Steam Train), you’ll need to time it right as it only passes by at 10:45am and 3pm. Arrive an hour early to park and walk the 15 minutes to the viewpoint. Later, spend some time walking around the Loch Shiel waterfront (known as Black Lake to Harry Potter Fans) before driving onward to Fort William and Inverlochy Castle Hotel to relax for the evening.

Day 8: Inverlochy Castle and Afternoon Tea

No driving today! Spend the day at Inverlochy Castle, where there are so many activities to partake in — billiards, woodland walks, row boats on the loch, archery, clay pigeon shooting and more. Enjoy afternoon tea (maybe even with Champagne) and take it easy as you near the end of your road trip.

Day 9: The End of Your Scottish Adventure

Today you are headed either back to Edinburgh or to Glasgow, depending on where you would like to end your Scottish adventure. Both cities have international airports and well-connected train stations so you can be on your way home or to your next destination. But on the way, you must drive through Glencoe (taking A82) for some of the most unmatched scenery in the world. If you are up for more hiking, stop at the Glencoe Lochan Trails and choose one of the three easy trails to explore.

After your walk, continue on the A82 to see the Meeting of Three Waters, the picturesque “wee white house” and Glen Etive. After you are done exploring Glencoe, keep driving to your ending location and think back on all the beautiful sights you have seen in Scotland.

Indulge in the hearty flavors of traditional Isle of Skye cuisine, where fresh seafood like succulent scallops and flaky haddock take center stage. Explore the island's culinary heritage with classic dishes such as stovies, a comforting mix of potatoes, onions, and meat slow-cooked to perfection, offering a taste of Scotland's rich gastronomic tradition.

The Old School Restaurant  is one of the best places on the island to sample local produce. It’s located in Dunvegan and offers a fantastic dining experience, complete with a pre-dinner room, open fireplaces, and a varied menu. The menu highlights include the beer-battered haddock, langoustine, and sticky toffee pudding.

The Oyster Shed is a perfect choice if you're a seafood lover. It’s found in the small village of Carbost, and the menu changes daily depending on the catch. Popular options at this eatery include oysters, lobster, smoked salmon, mussels, and crab. There’s even a seafood platter if you’re after a bit of everything.

The Stein Inn is the oldest pub on the Isle of Skye, dating back to 1790. It’s located on the shores of Lochbay, so it offers stunning views of the Outer Hebrides. Here, you can try a variety of Skye-inspired dishes, including shellfish and over 120 Scottish whiskies. It’s also possible to stay overnight in a sea-view room.

You’ll find Cafe Sia & Siaway in the town of Broadford. A highlight of this place has to be its wood-fired pizzas, which are also available for takeaway. The ice cream milkshakes are another delight, as well as the real-fruit smoothies. Of course, there are plenty of other tasty dishes on offer too.

Another popular spot in Broadford is Deli Gata , known for its charming setting, signature sandwiches, cream cheese bagels, and soups. Many tasty sweet treats are available, including scones, coffee and walnut cake, lemon drizzle, and chocolate orange cake. So much to choose from!

Pitlochry is a nice town worth considering.

isle of skye 1 day tour from edinburgh

Seconding Pitlochry. We've also stayed near Aviemore.

If via the Kyle bridge, somewhere in the Pitlochry area would be fine; my preference if possible would be to stay in beautiful Fortingall or nearby Aberfeldy, and use the evening to explore Glen Lyon, to the west of Fortingall. IMO (and that of many others) it's one of the most beautiful glens in Scotland .

Map - https://maps.app.goo.gl/tvbeGEUeTRP4yNLs8

If via the Mallaig ferry (which will of course make it a longer day, albeit a much more scenic one) then I'd head back through Glen Coe, hopefully with enough time to detour down Glen Etive for a bit (stunning) then end up either in Killin, near the Falls of Dochart, or again, in the Perthshire Highlands around Glen Lyon.
