With a Grammy and 20 years experience in the music industry under her belt, Paula Cole is one of the most experienced singer/songwriters out there right now. Although over the years Cole’s had problems with record labels going out of business, and other barriers in her career, she has without fail, made it out the other end of every obstacle even stronger than before.
The venue was intimate, and therefore there wasn’t a bad view in the house, everyone could see and hear Cole perfectly. The speakers were positioned well so that even though we were on the side, the acoustics were great. She’s a humble artist, and when she took to the stage with nothing but a warm hello and her guitar, the audience hushed in anticipation. What we then heard was more than we were expecting. She opened with Feelin Love, which was sang beautifully, and I realised that she’s one of the very few artists who sound even better live than on their studio records.
Paula played a great selection of her tracks, from old to new, and it was especially great when she played some new tracks. Although she’s been performing for years, this shows in experience rather than a tired performance, she really was at the top of her game.

A lovely and intimate evening of gorgeous music with a fabulous ensemble of players, lead by the incomparable Paula Cole. Her rhythm guitarist travels with Meshell Ndegeocello - enough said. Her bass guitarist was quiet, confident and terrific...and her percussionist/drummer was fabulous! The Towne Crier staff was attentive and on time, kind and courteous. All of this combined made for a fantastic concert experience.

Paula Cole Announces US Tour Dates, New Album 'American Quilt' Out Now
Watch Cole's stunning live performance videos for “Wayfaring Stranger,” “Black Mountain Blues,” and "God's Gonna Cut You Down."
Today, Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Paula Cole announced a run of US tour dates. Following the release of her acclaimed album American Quilt, the Grammy-winning songwriter and producer is embarking on a 23-date tour, beginning on August 8 at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and concluding at Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield, Maine on November 18. Twelve evenings will be a double bill with songwriter Madeleine Peyroux. Tickets are currently available for purchase here .
Released in May, American Quilt has been acclaimed by outlets including Rolling Stone, USA Today, and No Depression. Forbes.com writes, "Cole is back with the powerful and gritty American Quilt..." American Songwriter also praised album writing, "Throughout, the 11-track collection contains the folkloric roots of American music. Cole's radiant vocals pull the underlying humanity of a nation divided."
Watch Cole's stunning live performance videos for "Wayfaring Stranger," "Black Mountain Blues," and "God's Gonna Cut You Down."
With a musical catalog defined by honest and deeply personal lyrics carried by her powerful, radiant voice, Cole has always had a gift for discerning the underlying humanity in stories from her own life as well as those around her, and channeling those emotional elements into captivating music. On American Quilt, Cole applies this natural insight to American history and musical roots traditions by interpreting a selection of classic songs - each of which provide an entry point for rediscovering the overlooked stories and figures that populate America's interwoven cultural lineage.
The album was produced by Cole, who was the first woman nominated (without collaborators) as Producer of the Year at the 1997 Grammy awards. She garnered a total of seven Grammy nominations that year and won "Best New Artist" for her second album and major-label debut, This Fire, with its timeless hits, "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" and "I Don't Want to Wait" (later the theme song for hit TV series Dawson's Creek). Today, as a visiting scholar at Berklee College of Music, Cole tells "all my female students, 'Start thinking like a producer, think about how you want the whole track to sound, be a voice.'"
"Together these songs make an American Quilt," says Cole, "a patchwork of heritage, a stitched-together-history of culture both painful and beautiful. I hope the listener will step inside the canoe and float down the Missouri River of their mind. I hope they will hear the gospel of the country, and taste the liquor in the speakeasies. I hope they will feel the freedom in the jazz of the cities, heed the call to morality in the spirituality of a day's hard work, and the call to the Great Beyond from the Appalachians."
As on previous albums, Cole was joined by a longtime "family" of musicians, including esteemed drummer Jay Bellerose and guitarist Kevin Barry, collaborators since the trio's days at Berklee. American Quilt follows 2019's acclaimed album of originals, Revolution, deemed by PopMatters as "an exceptional piece of work, a timely reminder of how soulful and perceptive a writer and singer Cole is and has always been."

We’ve got the windy city covered., “i don’t want to wait” icon paula cole, fresh off “lo,” enthralls old town school on tour opener.
Posted by Andy Argyrakis
Almost a decade has passed since Paula Cole released an entirely original pop/rock album following a string of jazz, folk and social justice-themed projects, but “Lo” finds her seamlessly picking up where she left off as a both a thought-provoking troubadour and boundary-blurring producer.
In fact, the “Best New Artist” Grammy Award-winner also made history as the first ever solo female to be nominated for the latter during an unstoppable stretch in the 1990s, starting out backing Peter Gabriel and rising to being a headliner on the Lilith Fair.
The fact it was the very first night of this new tour made it all the more special, particularly when she debuted the likes of “The Replacements & Dinosaur Jr.,” “Follow The Moon,” “Invisible Armor,” “Green Eyes Crying” and “Wildflower,” boldly living up to her biographical description of being a “truth-teller, provocateur, feminist, and brilliant autobiographical writer who has pushed for personal honesty and social change.”
Even one of her most humongous hits, “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? 2.0,” fit the bill as a tongue-in-cheek take on gender stereotypes, which may have went over the heads of many listeners swept into the multi-platinum mania of “This Fire,” but was nonetheless communicated with clarity and accepted as intended on this nearly two-hour night.
Cole continued intermingling the distant and recent past thanks to the soulful “I Believe In Love,” the stunningly stripped down “Happy Home,” her hometown story “Gloucester Harbor Shore” and the Wurlitzer glow of “Strong Beautiful Woman,” fresh off its TikTok resurgence, always managing to come across as timeless.
The headliner left everyone with an unplugged and enthralling interpretation of the fitting “Flying Home,” complimenting the long-awaited return to her already accomplished singer/songwriter roots and fully realizing them on the road.

Paula Cole Premieres “Wayfaring Stranger,” One Patch From Her Upcoming LP ‘American Quilt’
by Madeline Crone April 1, 2021, 8:02 am
Paula Cole vehemently opposes the divide of genres. The Grammy-winning songwriter and producer says, “I feel like it’s part of my mission to talk about this constructed division, to deconstruct and unify the human family through music.”
Videos by American Songwriter
“I’m in a very prolific part of my life,” Cole tells American Songwriter over the phone one March morning. She’s officially an empty nester and filling the space with productivity she hasn’t experienced in several years as an independent artist.
Following her 2016 double jazz album Ballads, the artist realized her work was not done. She poured years of pent-up jazz influence—her first love—into 31 tracks and still had strong tracks leftover. The hesitation that held Cole from recording her first all-jazz album for decades led her to broaden the scope for her next. Cole’s forthcoming project, American Quilt, paints a detailed portrait of her whole musical story. Throughout, the 11-track collection contains the folkloric roots of American music. Cole’s radiant vocals pull the underlying humanity of a nation divided.
“The mantle of jazz weighed heavy on me; I suffered imposter syndrome,” she says. “As a white person and a young person, I didn’t feel entitled to it for a long time. But after putting the work in, it was finally time to put my own expression in, and that album was successful. But it didn’t feel right to make another one of just jazz. I knew I needed to incorporate the folk aspects to represent myself better.”
Cole was raised on folk, Americana, and country music. Her father was a bassist in a polka band. As opposed to jazz, her native music came more easily from memory. “I’m a mixture, even genetically,” she says. “I was raised on all of it. I’m not too fond of the ideas and labels that separate them anyway. So if I am making music and honoring my musical family and all of its roots, it needed to be everything.”
In January 2020, right before the pandemic hit, she went into the studio with folk songs like “Shenandoah,” “Black Mountain Blues,” which she learned from Bessie Smith and Janis Joplin, and “Wayfaring Stranger,” released March 19 as an entrance single .
Her longtime friend and mentor Emmylou Harris turned her on to the 18th-century mountain tune on her 1980 album, Roses in the Snow. Her performance captured a moment within the melodic delivery that emerged one day as Cole sat at a piano during a soundcheck. “It just leaped out of me,” she says. “It sprang from my subconscious because it’s part of it. I knew then I needed to record it”
Harris—who she notes as “one of the most important voices for America”—convinced Cole to stick with her guns when she was ready to drop from the music industry. “Wayfaring Stranger” resonates for her on a personal level, marking how far she’s come in her artistry. But it also captures the spirit of transcendental storytelling this album evokes.
Cole says, “These songs are oral history encompassed in a hymn where it was born and brought overseas. Here it was mixed with pioneers, native Americans, onboard clipper ships. The melody keeps being recycled, preserving history in a way. Each tune here is a patchwork of a musical lineage that tells a fuller story.”
“Wayfaring Stranger” was produced and arranged by Paula Cole for her eleventh studio album American Quilt and features Jay Bellerose (drums), Kevin Barry (guitar), Ross Gallagher (upright bass), and Kathleen Parks (violin).
Watch an exclusive video of Paula Cole’s Live at The Cabot performance of “Wayfaring Stranger” below. American Quilt is due out May 21.

Paula Cole Announces New Album Lo
Stream New Track “The Replacements & Dinosaur Jr.” Here
Extensive Headlining US Tour Dates Also Announced
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and producer Paula Cole will release Lo , her first collection of entirely new, original songs in nearly a decade, on March 1, 2024. Today, Paula shares the first single from the album, "The Replacements & Dinosaur Jr.” - a heartfelt tribute to her friend and artistic mentor, Mark Hutchins , who left us too soon, aged 51. The song pays homage to Hutchins’ musical influences, spanning from The Replacements and Dinosaur Jr. to The Beatles, XTC, Daniel Lanois, and A Tribe Called Quest. This song, like the forthcoming album, beautifully blends vulnerability with joy, staying true to Paula's signature authentic and soul-stirring style.
Paula recalls, "Mark exploded my mind. I literally heard the Beatles first with Mark. Also The Replacements, Dinosaur Jr., A Tribe Called Quest, The Pixies, and a lot of gorgeous early-90’s alternative music folks might not associate with me. We connected in our love for Peter Gabriel’s music. I was mourning, honoring, celebrating Mark when I wrote this. I wanted to acknowledge him and his lasting influence in my life. Mark should have had an enormous career. I’m so grateful. The song needed to be fun, like he was."

The album features longtime Cole collaborator Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John) on drums, plus Ross Gallagher (Joe Henry, Marc Ribot) on upright bass, Chris Bruce (Meshell Ndegeocello, Bettye LaVette, Tom Waits) on guitar, and Rich Hinman (Maren Morris, Sara Bareilles) on pedal steel and guitar. The album was produced by Cole and recorded at The Village recording studio in Los Angeles by nine time Grammy-winning engineer, Mike Piersante.
Paula has also announced an extensive US tour which will kick off April 11 in Chicago, and feature many of the musicians who perform on Lo in her backing band. See below for a full list of dates.
A truth-teller, provocateur, feminist, and brilliant autobiographical writer who has pushed for personal honesty and social change, Cole wrote all the songs on Lo , as a way to navigate her opening to trust again after life’s indelible blows. Weaving the personal with the universal, she wrestles with questions of identity and intimacy, history and our collective failure to learn from it, ultimately showing the album to be a window into her own psyche.
Paula Cole is a Best New Artist Grammy-winner and was the first woman nominated in her own right for a Grammy for "Producer of the Year." She has in recent years honored her love for jazz and folk standards, and songs for social justice with her releases ‘Ballads’ , ‘American Quilt ’ and ‘Revolution’ for which NPR called her a “ boundary-pushing feminist trailblazer,” for having “long incorporated powerful social statements into her emotional hit songs.” Her beloved anthems "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? " and "I Don't Want to Wait" are still playlist and radio perennials.
Stay tuned for what is sure to be a big year for Paula Cole, see tour dates here and stream “The Replacements & Dinosaur Jr.” here .

About paula cole.
Paula Cole’s eleventh studio album, “Lo” is devastatingly personal and utterly gorgeous. Her first album of original compositions in five years, “Lo”’s eleven songs, written entirely by Cole, navigate her opening to trust again after indelible blows of life. As the first woman to ever be nominated for the Best Producer Grammy in her own right, Paula Cole returns to the helm of recording as sole producer. On “Lo”, her loyal bandmates of many years (musicians that are stars unto themselves) join Cole in the studio. “Lo” was recorded entirely live, featuring full band performances from Jay Bellerose (drums), Chris Bruce (guitars), Ross Gallagher (upright and electric bass, backing vocals) and Rich Hinman (pedal steel, guitars). It was recorded and mixed by nine-time Grammy-award-winning-engineer, Mike Piersante, whose unique sound is the canvas for “Lo.” The autobiographies that are the songs of “Lo”, are the newest Polaroid snapshots of Cole’s life.
The focus is her most recent period of years, saying goodbye to her friend and early collaborator, Mark Hutchins, on “The Replacements & Dinosaur Jr.”, reflecting on her childhood’s psychological influence in “Follow The Moon”, her primary relationship, in which she wrestles inner demons in “Green Eyes Crying”, lays down her “Invisible Armor” to find hope, rebirth, acceptance in “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,” and physical intimacy in “take it take it take it”. Cole faces her identity in the spine-chilling, redemptive “Wildflower”. “Lo” is a window to Paula Cole’s psyche. Continuing her social-justice writing through music, Cole’s “Lo” reveals songs “Calling All Saviors” (a catchy pop gem), and “Letter From A Quarry Miner” (written from a North American quarryman, to his European family during The Great Depression in 1932.) Cole weaves in the words of W. B. Yeats in “Golden Apples of the Sun ” while honoring Ray Bradbury in “Fahrenheit 451”. The song is a poem, touching on the concept of the anthropocene and the frightening prospect of erasing history. With her eleventh studio album, “Lo”, Cole eloquently weaves the personal with the universal, the shy with the provocative. She concludes with the uplifting “Flying Home”, an homage to Max Erhmann’s “Desiderata”.
From whispering poetry in a low alto range, to opening her throat in primal scream, Paula Cole’s voice is more commanding than ever, revealing battle scars, deep wisdom, the soulfulness of gospel, the urgency of rock, and the sensitivity of folk. Cole plays piano, Rhodes, acoustic guitar, clarinet and sings her artfully arranged background-vocals. She is a poet with a funky groove.
Cole has been a truth-teller, a provocateur, a feminist, a rebel, and a brilliant autobiographical writer who has pushed for personal honesty and social change. An artful weaver of genre, she is difficult to categorize – she is simply Paula Cole. From her debut “Harbinger”, in her androgynous combat boots and sensitive songs, to the everlasting hits of “This Fire”, to her genre-busting “Amen” (a neo-soul-touched tour de force) to a vibrant line of independent recordings on her own 675 Records label, she has released music for over three decades, recorded and performed with greats such as Peter Gabriel, Dolly Parton, Missy Elliot, Meshell N’Degeocello, Melissa Etheridge, Herbie Hancock, Sarah McLachlan, Terri Lyne Carrington,
Emmylou Harris, Nona Hendrix, Paul Buchanan of The Blue Nile, to John Paul White and Jason Isbell. She was an instrumental force behind the historic Lilith Fair. Her songs have been covered by artists from Herbie Hancock and Annie Lennox, to Lissie, to HAIM, sampled by hip hop artists, and performed by choirs. Paula Cole has pushed buttons and boundaries, declared truths and followed her own path of iconic vision.
Cole will be on tour in 2024 with concerts surrounding the release of “Lo”. Look for upcoming tour dates and announcements across Cole’s social media platforms.

Paula cole announces new album ‘lo’.
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and producer Paula Cole will release Lo, her first collection of entirely new, original songs in nearly a decade, on March 1, 2024. Today, Paula shares the first single from the album, “The Replacements & Dinosaur Jr.” – a heartfelt tribute to her friend and artistic mentor, Mark Hutchins, who left us too soon, aged 51. The song pays homage to Hutchins’ musical influences, spanning from The Replacements and Dinosaur Jr. to The Beatles, XTC, Daniel Lanois, and A Tribe Called Quest. This song, like the forthcoming album, beautifully blends vulnerability with joy, staying true to Paula’s signature authentic and soul-stirring style.
Paula recalls, “Mark exploded my mind. The song needed to be fun, like he was.”
A truth-teller, provocateur, feminist, and brilliant autobiographical writer who has pushed for personal honesty and social change, Cole wrote all the songs on Lo, as a way to navigate her opening to trust again after life’s indelible blows. Weaving the personal with the universal, she wrestles with questions of identity and intimacy, history and our collective failure to learn from it, ultimately showing the album to be a window into her own psyche.
Paula Cole is a Best New Artist Grammy-winner and was the first woman nominated in her own right for a Grammy for “Producer of the Year.” She has in recent years honored her love for jazz and folk standards, and songs for social justice with her releases ‘Ballads’, ‘American Quilt’ and ‘Revolution’ for which NPR called her a “boundary-pushing feminist trailblazer,” for having “long incorporated powerful social statements into her emotional hit songs.” Her beloved anthems “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” and “I Don’t Want to Wait” are still playlist and radio perennials. Stay tuned for what is sure to be a big year for Paula Cole, see tour dates here and stream “The Replacements & Dinosaur Jr.” now.

In 1996, Paula Cole released her self-produced second album, This Fire . It was an double-platinum smash, and lead single “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” catapulted into the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100. Her songwriting was especially loved by traditionalists, feminists, and the LGBTQIA community. Cole was nominated for seven Grammys and became the first solo woman to be nominated for Producer of the Year. Her second single, the anthemic “I Don’t Want to Wait,” dominated charts for a year and was the well-loved theme song for the television show Dawson’s Creek .
Cole’s songwriting pushes boundaries and touches hearts and minds. Her live performances are movements of passion. She was a seminal figure in the formation of the first Lilith Fair and has performed the world over.
