The History of Zabljak

With the vast amount of fresh water surrounding Zabljak, it’s no surprise that it became a settlement for many shortly after being discovered. There are many small rivers and lakes throughout Zabljak, which is sandwiched between Tara and Piva lakes. The town saw a ton of destruction and subsequent regrowth due to both the Balkan Wars and World War II.

tourist information zabljak

Through the centuries, Zabljak was a nature-filled getaway for some and an economic centerpiece for Montenegro. Now, the country is seen as the best place to go for enjoying winter activities and breathtaking landscapes during every season.

That said, there are lots of elements throughout the town that encapsulate the history of the area and memorialize how the culture of Zabljak evolved throughout centuries.

What is the best time to visit Zabljak?

Well, if you’re a snow lover, the answer is pretty simple: winter, baby! From December to March, Zabljak is covered in a thick blanket of snow, making it the perfect destination for skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and all kinds of winter sports. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a wild mountain goat or two, though you might want to avoid challenging them to a downhill race.

But if you’re more of a warm-weather person, fear not! Zabljak is just as beautiful in the summer months of June to September. The snow may be gone, but the mountains are still there, ready to be explored on foot or by mountain bike. And let’s not forget about the stunning Black Lake , where you can take a refreshing dip or rent a boat and spend the day floating around like a true king or queen.

Of course, no matter when you decide to visit Zabljak, you’ll want to come prepared with the right gear and clothing. And if you happen to get lost in the mountains or encounter a pack of wild wolves, just remember to stay calm, stick together, and sing a rousing chorus of “Eye of the Tiger” to scare them off.

So whether you’re a winter warrior or a summer adventurer, Zabljak has got you covered. Pack your bags, book your accommodations, and get ready for the trip of a lifetime!

tourist information zabljak

If you want to see a non-tourist Montenegro and fully experience the local color, then go to the north, to the town of Zabljak. It is the most mountainous settlement in the Balkans, which enchants with its mesmerizing landscapes, unspoiled nature and incredibly clear glacial lakes. It is situated at an altitude of 1,456 meters above sea level and is located near the Durmitor National Park.

It is noteworthy that for about 100-120 days a year there is a lot of snow, so around Zabljak equipped with several ski resorts for fans of active winter holidays.

And for those who do not like the cold and prefer to travel in a warmer season, in Zabljak is also found entertainment: rafting on the mountain river Tara, hiking, mountain climbing, trips on quad bikes or horses in the canyons, collecting forest berries/mushrooms and much more.

Montenegrins love to come here, especially during the peak summer season, to escape from the bustle and crowds of people on the coast. Since Zabljak is still quite a small town and unknown to the general public, many tourists overlook it, and this is very unfortunate. There are a lot of attractions and beautiful places in the vicinity of Zabljak. In addition, if you like quiet and secluded places, you will definitely like this town, because Zabljak leaves no one indifferent.

Originally, it was a small settlement where caravans stayed for the night after a difficult journey through the mountains. The name of the place was then «Ganovi», and Zabljak received its modern name only in 1870, after a school and a church were built here. After the Turks left, Zabljak began to actively develop: a small number of stores and cafes were opened, and soon the city acquired the status of a commercial center, and then Zabljak became the administrative center of the region.

Due to the Balkan wars that raged here in 1912-1913, almost all the buildings were razed to the ground, only the Church of the Transfiguration (1862) survived. After a short period of reconstruction, the town of Zabljak was once again subjected to trials and during World War II it was burned to the ground.

But, as we can see, the town has been revived again, making it a ski center. Nowadays, Zabljak looks quite modest, but homely.

How to get to Žabljak

The distance from Podgorica airport to Zabljak is about 130 km. The most convenient way to get here is by car, but you can also use another method.

The road to Zabljak is quite winding, so there is almost no public transport. There are regular buses only from Podgorica, so to get here by bus from the coast, you will need to make a change. But be aware that buses to Zabljak are rare, so it is not always possible to find a convenient time interval.

Tickets for the bus you can see on the official website https://busticket4.me/ .

Perhaps the most convenient way to get to Zabljak is to book a transfer. Here you will not need to drive yourself, looping through the mountain serpentines, and you can enjoy the beautiful views. But you need to take care of the transfer in advance, because «on the spot» you can ask for 50 or even 100% higher payment.

If you are planning to rent a car in Montenegro, it will be a great decision, especially if you are going to visit several locations. There are many local car rental agencies in Montenegro, where the prices are very reasonable and there are virtually no deposits for the car. But as in the case with the transfer, you should think about renting a car in advance and book a car for the period you need, because during the season the demand is high and available cars quickly run out.

Zabljak ski resorts

Until recently, Zabljak ski resorts were considered the best in Montenegro, but a couple of years ago it started building another ski resort (Kolasin 1600), which is being built according to new standards. However, Kolasin is still inferior to Zhablyak in terms of infrastructure, and there is more snow on Zhablyak, which creates great conditions for free-riders.

Now Zabljak has only one ski resort out of three. It is expected that the other two (Javorovača and Štúc) will be given for privatization and reconstruction, but sponsors have not yet been found.

This resort is suitable for all fans of snowboarding, skiing and sledging. There are blue, red, black, and children's slopes, and even a small rope park for those who have not yet dared to stand on skis. It has a fairly good infrastructure: there is a parking lot, rents skis, and sleds. You can buy ski passes or tickets for the cable car (just to admire the views).

More about ski resorts in Montenegro.

If we talk about what you can see in Zabljak, there are not many interesting places, but there are several locations that you should visit while in this region. Below we will write the most famous attractions, but note that there are also a few «secret» places, where they do not take tourists. They include: Ice Cave, Stecki (medieval necropolis), Bajloviča Sige waterfall, various glacial lakes (Barno, Jablan, Valovito, Vražje, Zmejinoje and others).

Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park is a protected area that has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Here you will see many natural beauties, including the canyon of the Tara River, which is considered the largest canyon in Europe. There are many hiking trails in Durmitor, most of which you can walk even without special equipment. The park is quite large, so if you want to explore it completely, it will take you about a week. But for an introductory walk, 1-2 days will be enough.

Black Lake (Crno Jezero)

Most often, tourists go to the north of Montenegro to visit this location. The Black Lake is located on the territory of the Durmitor National Park. The lake got its name because of the shadow that falls from the surrounding mountains, creating a dark color of its water. The water in the Black Lake is clean and clear, so in summer daredevils even swim here.

Near the lake you can rent a boat during the season, if you want. In winter, the lake is completely frozen.

Djurdjevic Tara Bridge

This arched bridge is a trademark of Montenegro. Everyone who goes to Zabljak necessarily add this location to their list, although in fact, the Djurdjevic Tara Bridge is located in the neighboring municipality of Plevlja. The views from here are spectacular, and for the extreme lovers of the bridge, there are two ziplines.

Djurdjevic Tara Bridge

Excursions and activities in Zabljak

Excursions to Zabljak are sold in every local travel agency. Depending on your wishes, you can attend a one-day introductory tour of Zabljak, where you will be taken to the above-mentioned sights or you can choose a more extreme activity. More extreme excursions include rafting on the Tara River or a walk through the canyons of Montenegro on quad bikes.

If you decide to visit Zabljak on your own by car, we advise you to stay at least one night. So you will have time to visit all the main attractions, and if you want you can arrange a walk on quad bikes or rafting on the river.

In addition to the above-mentioned options, you can also do mountaineering/climbing or just walk on the slopes, go horseback riding or bicycle riding. In the fall and summer season you can pick berries, mushrooms, herbs and just enjoy the incredible views.

In the north of Montenegro, prices are about 20-50% lower (depending on the season) when it comes to food or lodging. So here dinner for two in a cafe will cost you 12-20 euros. Lodging can be rented from 20 euros/day. Also, check with your landlord or hotel reception for discounts on various activities.

Zabljak is beautiful at any time of the year. In summer the temperature here does not exceed 25 degrees, so when you leave the coast you literally «take a breath of fresh air», and in the evening you will feel a pleasant coolness.

In the autumn there is a golden period, when all the trees are covered with bright red and orange leaves. It is in the autumn that tourists and locals alike like to visit Zabljak the most.

In winter, however, there can be incredibly high snowfields, despite the relatively low temperatures high up in the mountains. But the roads are cleared quickly, so there is usually no difficulty in getting through.

High Season

In contrast to the coast, in the north of Montenegro there is no seasonality as such. In summer, tourists from the coast come here. Later the locals come to enjoy the golden autumn, in winter and spring Zabljak turns into a ski resort. So there is something to do in any season. However, if you prefer to visit Montenegro in a less «touristic» period to fully enjoy all the beauty, choose May or September-October.

Hotels and Apartments

Despite the small size of the city, in Zabljak quite a lot of real estate for rent. Here you can find small country houses, villas, chalets and hotels.

Note the following places to stay:

  • NORTH STORY - Luxury Chalet - Apartments & rooms
  • WoodMood Zabljak
  • Guest House SARA
  • Hotel Polar Star
  • Casa di Pino Eco Lodge

Restaurants and cafes

In Zabljak there are not many restaurants and cafes, so you will not get tired of the variety. When visiting the local restaurants we advise you to pay attention to the national dishes. Some of them you are unlikely to find on the coast, such as the famous kacamak or sacha meat.

Zabljak Travel Guide: Best Things to Do in Zabljak, Montenegro

Sarah profile pic

BY SARAH PAVLOVIC

Zabljak is a great place to visit if you’re looking for rustic charm, adventure and a place where you can enjoy the simple life.

Do you want to get away from the coastal summer crowds?

See Montenegro's famed 'black mountains'?

Breathe fresh, mountain air?

Enjoy slow-cooked meals of hearty, mountain food?

In short, enjoy the simple life.

Then look no further than Zabljak.

At around two and a half hours’ drive from the coast, you can visit this town in Durmitor National Park in a day trip or overnight there.

I recommend staying a night or two. We’ve done both but you'll see so much more if you have a couple of full days there.

About Zabljak

Zabljak (pronounced 'Zhablyak') is a small mountain town of around 2,000 people. It's very easy to get around, but you will need a  car .

Zabljak

The town is the gateway to Durmitor National Park , which is why it's one of the best places to see Montenegro's 'black mountains' and raw nature. It's easier to get to than the other inland national parks - Biogradska Gora and Prokletije - so it's a great way to incorporate a visit to the mountains.

Because it's mainly a winter resort, with a modest ski field, summer is low season here. There are plenty of tourists and school groups around, but it never gets crowded the way the Montenegrin coast does.

So if you're looking for a quiet mountain retreat... this could be the perfect place for you!

Things to Do in Zabljak

1. the black lake.

The Black Lake is one of Durmitor National Park's 18 glacial lakes and it's the top attraction to see in Zabljak.

Whether you walk around the lake, go for a hike or hire a boat, time spent here is time well spent.

Zabljak Durmitor

Local's Tip: On the short walk to the lake, you'll pass people selling local specialties such as honey with walnuts and cups of wild berries they picked in the park. Fresh, organic blueberries for  €1 a cup makes a great snack!

2. Visitors Centre

With your entrance to the park, you also get entrance to the Durmitor National Park  visitor’s centre which you pass on your way to the lake. Inside, you’ll find information about the local area, flora, fauna and you can pick up maps for the hiking trails.

3. Canyoning

Now, I know I promised you adventure. And here it is.

Just outside of Zabljak, Nevidio Canyon, is home to the most popular canyoning tours in Montenegro. You start at one entry to the canyon and slide, climb, jump and swim your way to the exit. The canyon takes anywhere from 3-5 hours to navigate and it gets rave reviews. This is a must-do for adrenaline lovers!

If you have a rental car, you might like to drive yourself to the start of the canyoning tour which is 26km from Zabljak.

4. Nevidio Canyon Tour

Nevidio Canyon is an hour from Niksic towards Durmitor National Park. Nevidio Canyon means 'The Unseen Canyon' and it wasn't until 1965 that a team of Montenegrin Mountaineers managed to explore the canyon.

Nevidio is the most popular location for canyoning in Montenegro and in addition to the canyoning, you'll be treated to some stunning scenery as you travel up to the start point.

Tours here cover about 2km of the canyon and there's lots of swimming, climbing and jumping involved. Jumps here are up to 20m high! The canyoning tour takes around 3 1/2 hours, depending on the size and ability of a group.

Canyoning in Montenegro

This tour starts at the canyon, but you can ask for transfers if you don't have a rental car or you're staying nearby (eg. in Zabljak ).

You'll spend 3 1/2 hours working your way through the canyon and then enjoy a well-earned Montenegrin lunch with the group.

tourist information zabljak

Stećci are an interesting phenomenon that you’ll only be able to see in certain areas of the Balkans and two of the best sites to see stećci in Montenegro are in Žabljak, near Durmitor National Park.

Stećci are medieval tombstones that are only found in certain parts of Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia. Stećci date back to the 12th to 16th centuries and even though they’re being studied, there are still a lot of mysteries surrounding stećci.

Durmitor National Park is a hiker's dream. There are trails all over the park and there are 18 glacier lakes in the park.

The most popular hike in Montenegro, Bobotov Kuk is here. Although people often think it's the highest peak in Montenegro, it's actually the fourth highest at 2522m. If you're interested in hiking this trail,  this article  is a must-read.

And if you're interested in hiking any trails in Montenegro, I highly recommend  The Mountains of Montenegro  which has excellent descriptions of every trail.

12. Skiing and Snowboarding

Zabljak is one of the most popular ski resorts in Montenegro. However, it's in need of investment and I wouldn't recommend visiting especially for a skiing or snowboarding trip.

If you're interested in skiing or snowboarding in the Balkans, our favourite place is Kopaonik in Serbia. We go every year and love it!

My favourite apartment accommodation here is  Polar Star . The apartments and wooden bungalows are spacious and comfortable and you have an onsite restaurant and playground. Here are some more good self-catering options:

Durmitor Bungalows

tourist information zabljak

What could be more mountain-like than a log cabin?

Durmitor Bungalows is a group of Montenegrin log cabins that you can rent out.

The complex has free WiFi and a barbecue area. It's only 1km from town but is set in a classic, rural setting.

Choose from one or three bedroom cottages.

Sun Village Zabljak

Zabljak apartments

Sun Village has large bungalows that sleep up to 6 people - great for groups.

They're set just 1km from the town centre and although there's no WiFi, there's a basic gym, sauna and games room with table tennis and pool.

Apartments Durmitorska Vila

If you're looking for last minute accommodation here, make sure you check Booking.com's deals page.

The closer it is to the date you're booking for, the more deals there'll be but I wouldn't recommend this approach if you've got your heart set on a place - it might just get fully booked!

Still, this is great tool if you're flexible and looking for a bargain!

If you want to camp inside the national park you have to buy a camping permit from the visitor's centre for  €3. If you'd like to use their campsite it costs  €10.

Zabljak Restaurants

Restoran koliba.

For Montenegrin mountain food and specialties from the Durmitor region, you can't go past Restoran Koliba. This restaurant at the base of Savin Kuk ski lift is the best place for authentic Montenegrin fare - think pies, slow roasted meat, sausages, cheese, hearty soups and more. Their prices are also very reasonable at €2 for soup and meat mains from €6.

Put this place on your list!

At the other end of the spectrum, there's Dvoriste. I like to call this Montenegrin fusion. A modern take on classic Montenegrin food. People call Dvoriste a hidden gem and you can tell every meal and detail has been crafted with love.

The prices here are a little higher than elsewhere in town, but restaurants are not expensive here anyway and I think it's worth paying a few extra Euros for.

Address: Jakova Ostoji, Durmitor National Park Phone: +382 (0)69 978 437 Prices: €€€

You saw my chocolate souffle at Hotel Soa above. They also have a contemporary menu of soups, salads, pizzas and meat mains. This restaurant is more modern, where as the majority of restaurants in town are very traditional Montenegrin restaurants. So if you feel like something global, this is your place.

They also have a lounge bar which is a relaxing place to grab a drink with your significant other, sit by the fire and relax after a day's exploring.

Finally, the scenic mountain road crossing Durmitor National Park, 43.1338 18.9724 4 R16 (also named P14) from Plužine is available for enthusiast drivers. Either way, those are curvy, mountainous roads that do not permit high speeds and require additional caution. During the winter, when whole area is covered with snow. Those unfamiliar with local roads should let someone more experienced drive them to Žabljak.

Get around [ edit ]

Žabljak is a very small town, so everything is within walking distance. You can get to some of the lakes around the town only by foot. However, some chairlifts, skiing pistes, etc., are reachable only by car.

See [ edit ]

  • 43.1465 19.0934 1 Black lake ( Crno Jezero ). The biggest, most beautiful lake in the area, and the closest to Žabljak.
  • Tara Canyon - deepest canyon in Europe, second deepest in the world, right after Arizona's Grand Canyon. It figures on UNESCO World Heritage List . Some 20 km east of town.
  • 43.122502 19.081053 2 Savin Kuk ( ski lift from Pošćenski Kraj village ). €3 . ( updated Apr 2023 )
  • 43.1938 19.0896 3 Churevac ( Ćurevac ). Mountain peak Ćurevac is great point for panoramic mountain view. €2 . ( updated Apr 2023 )

Do [ edit ]

  • Skiing - Durmitor's snow cover lasts 120 days per year and its best slopes are Savin kuk, Štuoc and Javorovača. Savin kuk has two chairlifts, a ski lift, nursery lift and a ski service. Savin kuk slope is 3,500 m long. Štuoc is somewhat shorter (2,600 m) but very exciting, and Javorovača's 800 m are perfect for those preferring short runs. The Nordic skiing tracks are 3 to 12 km long.
  • Snowboarding is popular, and many enthusiast gatherings and competitions are being held at Durmitor.
  • Rafting - 1.3 km deep Tara river canyon offers unforgettable rafting experience. You can go rafting by boat or a wooden raft down the 100 km of the most beautiful and exciting part of Tara. The usual route is from Splavište down to Šćepan Polje, and in between you can see Ljutice Falls, the 165-m-high magnificent Tara bridge, an old Roman road, and Lever Tara. The scenery at Tepački bukovi, Sušica canyon, Bailove sige, and Brstanovića bukovi is breathtaking. During the river trip, either dinner or lunch is served in natural scenery on the river banks. Rafting tours can also start at Radovan luka or Brstanovica. There is a couple of travel agencies offering rafting tours. Half-day tour costs €40-50, you it is strongly suggested to book the tour one day ahead. Full day is €100, and you must have a group of at least 4 people.
  • Mountaineering - Durmitor has perfect conditions for this sport, as cliffs and slopes are abundant. There are many well marked routes taking you high in to the mountains.
  • Cycling - from the lake to Žabljak and numerous other paths are great for this type of recreation. Paths around the Crno Jezero (Black Lake) can also be done but they are not well suited to this due the hilly terrain and the rocky surface of the trails. A one-day mountain bicycle rental costs ~€10. However, the bicycles are not always in the best condition. It is best to check the bicycle before biking away from the shop.
  • Hiking anywhere around the town, exploring the wilderness.

Hiking routes [ edit ]

  • The usual and the most visited one is to go around the Crno Jezero (so-called Black Lake) and then Malo Jezero (Small lake) adjacent to it. Allow 1.5 hr for leisurely walk.
  • There are a few trails starting at Crno Jezero that leads to several other lakes. Beware that anywhere except summer time it can be covered with snow so you'd need a proper shoes. As an example there is a hike to Zmijino Jezero which is about 1.5 hr one way on easy paths (some roots and rocks but nothing to worry about). Also there are a few paths going there so no need to return the same way.
  • A few peaks can be conquered, and those are pretty exhausting although rewarding hikes. E.g. hike to Bobatov Kuk Peak which can take up to a full day (at least 5-6 hr one way). It's possible to get to the peak from the village of Sedlo, and it's a much easier option as the starting point is much higher than Crno Jezero, after traversing the mountain go down to Crno Jezero.
  • A few climbing routes available which would require special gear.
  • One of the forks from Crno Jezero is a hike to Ice Cave (Ledena Pecina). Starting at the western part of the lake, it can take up to 4 hours steep climbing one way. It's all melted during summer time.
  • You can cross the ridge between Mala Međed and Veliki Međed in a circle hike, starting at one side of Crno Jezero and ending at the other. The most accessible point for the crossing is Velika previja . The way is well marked on the northern side and OK on the southern side (red circle around a white center). Account for at least 6 hours for the full hike.
  • A 2-hr, one-way hike from Crno Jezero (on the way to Bobotov Kuk) brings you to Katun Lokvice a large plateau surrounded by stunning mountains. In summer a shepherd sells soft drinks and beer there for prices that account for the fact that someone carried the drinks to there.

Buy [ edit ]

Žabljak is not really a shopping resort. It is, however, the right place to buy genuine Montenegrin food.

Eat [ edit ]

Žabljak has some excellent local cuisine restaurants. Notably, there is "Katun" restaurant on the very shore of Crno Jezero (temporarily closed in 2014), "MB" motel-restaurant, and "Momčilov grad" on the Štuoc.

Cold hors d'oeuvres include the famous njeguški pršut (smoked ham) and njeguški cheese, pljevaljski cheese, mushrooms, fried pastry and dried bleak. The main courses specific for the northern mountainous region are boiled lamb, lamb cooked in milk, cicvara in fresh milk cream (creamy buttered polenta), boiled potatoes with kajmak (local fresh cream cheese).

It might be a good idea to make an order and reserve seats a few hours in advance, as restaurants are small, may be crowded, and it might take some time to prepare the courses.

  • 43.15507 19.12174 1 Hotel Zabljak Restaurant . Fancy upscale restaurant with some excellent food, including some special local cuisine. entrees €2-8; mains €4-15 .
  • 43.15466 19.11801 2 Konoba "Luna" , 2 Njegoševa st , ☏ +382 68 431 808 . Fine family restaurant popular with locals. Offers some tasty local delicacies. Do not order the Cevapi here; it is not home-made. entrees €1-5; mains €2-12 .
  • Lupo Verde . Good breakfast foods (omelettes; breads and jam), but espressos are not very good.
  • Restaurant Durmitor . Excellent Durmitor local dishes at fair prices. Homemade Cevapi, soup, and lamb dishes are very tasty.
  • 43.153252 19.126234 3 Podgora , ☏ +382 69 705 835 . Restaurant with cheap and delicious national food. ( updated Apr 2023 )

Drink [ edit ]

Montenegrin quality wine is a must-try. The best known Montenegrin wines are the premium "Vranac", "Pro Corde", "Krstač", "Cabernet", "Chardonnay" and the famous home made Crmničko red wine.

Grape brandy ( rakija ) "Montenegrin loza", "Prvijenac", "Kruna" or home made grape brandy ( lozova rakija , lozovaca ) is also great.

Sleep [ edit ]

There are three major hotels in Žabljak: Planinka, Žabljak, and Durmitor. Besides these, there are many small motels (MB, Bjeloor, etc.) in and around town, not to mention that almost every local resident is willing to rent a room at affordable price. Just look for "Rooms, Sobe" sign; however take into account that not all owners are available right on spot and so you might need to call them to see the property (phone numbers are usually mentioned on their property signs).

Accommodation in Žabljak is abundant, except around New Year's Eve, when the place is packed.

What else to do? Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park

Other attractions and attractions are also associated with the nature of Montenegro and the surroundings of Zabljak in particular. It’s just amazing how on such a small area, there can be at the same time so many incredibly beautiful places! Briefly go over the main ones.

Durmitor National Park in Montenegro includes a huge array of Durmitor and three spectacular canyons, including the wild river Tara, which is the bottom of the deepest gorge of Europe with a height of 1300 meters. The park also has over a dozen sparkling lakes.

In summer, many of the fields in the park become pastures for grazing sheep and cattle, which are owned by 1,500 people living in the village of Zhablyak.

Black lake

The lake is located at an altitude of 1416 meters. It is called black because unique black pines stand around it in a dense forest, which, reflected in the water, create the effect of blackness. But the water in the Black Lake is so clear that you can see the bottom at a depth of 9 meters!

The Black Lake of Durmitor Park is one of the most romantic places in Montenegro. If you are lucky enough to come here in the spring, then you can see a picturesque waterfall (occurring when water flows from one lake to another). And in the summer – take a dip in fresh clear water. In addition, here you can ride a boat, ride a horse (if you do not know how, you will certainly be taught).

Glacier Cave Obla Head

Located at an altitude of 2040 meters above sea level. Here you can enjoy unique stalactite and stalagmitic compositions, try incredibly tasty and clear water.

This is a mountain peak located at an altitude of 2522 m above sea level. It’s simply impossible to convey the beauty of the species that open from the top of the Bobotov Cook mountain; you need to see it with your own eyes. This is a symbol of the beauty of Montenegro. All the way from Zabljak to the peak of Bobotov Kuk takes an average of 6 hours on foot.

Black Lake is not the only one in the vicinity of Zabljak. There is one more worth looking at – Zaboynoe. The lake is located at an altitude of 1477 m, abundantly covered with needles and beeches. This is the deepest lake in Montenegro (19 meters). Zaboiskoye Lake is a favorite place for fishermen fishing here for rainbow trout and enjoying amazing beauty and silence.

Monastery "Dobrilovina"

Today it is a female monastery. A monastery was built in honor of St. George in the XVI century. It has a rich history.

Zabljak: how to get

The easiest way to get to Zabljak is to fly to the nearest airport (such is the international airport in Podgorica), and then drive about 170 kilometers by bus or car.

Bus station in Podgorica

Road infrastructure is the main weak point of Zabljak, which may seriously hinder the development of the city with the status of the best ski resort in Montenegro. It can be seen that the authorities are working in this direction. And, perhaps soon it will be much faster and more comfortable to get to Zabljak (for example, when the road from Zabljak to Risan is repaired, the travel time will actually be reduced by two hours).

Of the several highways (which, as you probably already understood, are not in the best condition), the main one is the European highway E65 in the direction of Maykovets. This highway connects Zabljak with the north of the country, Podgorica and the coast.

Things to Do in Zabljak, Montenegro

  • Things to Do in Žabljak

Usually when people are coming to Montenegro I get asked the same question every time: should I stay in Kotor or Budva?

The answer is always Kotor — but there’s a lot more to Montenegro than just the coast. The north of Montenegro is like another world ten degrees cooler and home to the wild beauty advertised on all the tourist brochures.

Žabljak is probably the most well known spot in the north, a small town of 2000 people and hiking hub, and base for exploring the Durmitor National Park.

In winter the area disappears under metres of snow, but in the summer it is an interesting combination of Podgorica people escaping the lowland heat for their weekend houses, Hungarian bikers enjoying the picturesque roads, and fit-looking hikers from all over the globe.

I’m yet to reach the level of hiking prowess necessary for scaling peaks, so I usually go to Žabljak just to enjoy some decent long walks and views of rather gorgeous scenery.

Here are a few of my favourite things…

The Durmitor Ring

The Durmitor Ring in Montenegro

The most famous tourist attraction is the Durmitor Ring, a circular road beginning and ending in Žabljak that takes you through the wild mountain scenery of Durmitor National Park. It passes through tiny villages, picturesque lakes (if you go in spring you’ll see all of them), canyons hundreds of metres deep, pine forests, and high country summer sheep holdings.

It’s just incredible.

Durmitor in Montenegro

Don’t bother to look this route up on Google Maps, it isn’t there. Here is a link to an official map if you need it, but once you’re on the ground the route is well signed and difficult to get lost. You don’t need a 4×4 as the roads are paved, but they are one lane and very narrow, so watch out for oncoming traffic.

You can do the ring in two directions: one begins from the town of Žabljak itself and climbs down into the canyon and Šusičko lake. The other begins a few kilometres outside town back towards Šavnik and climbs to Sedlo Pass.

I recommend the first option, as the most challenging driving on the ring is in the forest, up and down into the canyon, and you’ll do that while you’re fresh. You also get a nice build up from forest views to green plateau plains and then the most spectacular mountains towards the end of the ring.

Caveat: don’t try this road before late May at the very earliest as you’re likely to be confronted by a wall of snow rather than a road. Not many people live up there and so the roads don’t get cleared all winter.

The lakes of Zabljak Montenegro

Across from the main highway to Žabljak is a huge plain of green that hides my favourite lake in Montenegro, Vražje Jezero (Devil’s Lake). It’s supposedly called this way because it looks like an eye – it has a pale blue ring around a deep blue center.

Go in the late afternoon, the angled sun brings out the fullest contrast in the colours and you can sit on the hill next to it. Climb the small hill next to the lake to enjoy the view, and listen to the local shepherd singing to his sheep.

Black Lake in Montenegro

The most famous lake in Montenego is Crno Jezero (Black Lake). This is maybe a fifteen minute walk from the centre of Žabljak and has all the Montenegrin accoutrements necessary for life – a cafe, music and lots of good spots for Instagram photos.

You can take an easy 45 minute walk around the lake in summer (in spring the trail might be broken by small waterfalls).

Zminje lake in Montenegro

Continuing further from Black Lake, past old mills and streams, you can continue to the next lake, Zminje Jezero (Snake Lake). Do this walk in August and you will still find springs to fill up your water bottle and wild berries to snack on along the path (the tiniest but most delicious raspberries, strawberries and blueberries you will ever have).

Hiking in Montenegro

Another of my favourites, at the beginning of the Durmitor ring and less than an easy hour’s hike from the road, is Jablan Jezero. A short hike up the hill next to it and you can perch on a rock and enjoy the lake from above (always the best way to see these lakes, in my opinion).

Susicko Lake, a spring lake, in Montenegro

Further along the Durmitor ring, down in the canyon, is Sušičko Jezero (Dry Lake). I was extremely puzzled on my first visit here, as all I found was a large grassy field.

It’s actually a spring lake – it only exists in early spring when the snow is melting. If you’re here in early to late June (time varies each year depending on the amount of snow and when spring arrives) it’s a seriously gorgeous spot.

Stecci, ancient gravestones, in Zabljak Montenegro

Last year I saw some new and clearly EU funded signs around Vražje pointing to ‘Stećci’ and decided to follow them and see what was there.

Surprisingly it did not lead to a small village called Stećci but instead to a field with beautiful carved stone gravestones just lying about.

The stećci are actually tombstones and grave markers of a mysterious medieval tribe who lived in what is now Bosnia-Herzegovina and northern Montenegro. There are two sites near Žabljak, one near Riblije Jezero and another on the same road a few kilometres further to the north.

Stecci near Ribilije Jezero, Montenegro

Very little is known about the tribes, but they definitely had an eye for the best sites around for their burials.

Lunch in Montenegro

After a day of walks and exploring I like to finish up at the at the restaurant at the Etno Selo Šljeme. Down a side road that parallels the main highway, the restaurant has one of the best views in the area, staring straight at Savin Kuk mountain.

Unusually for a restaurant with a view they also do decent food – particularly the meat. The porodični ručak (family lunch) is of ridiculous size, served up with almost two kilos of meat and costs less than 30 euro. Best to walk the 6km back to Žabljak after dinner here…!

Enjoy this part of the north and all the things to do in Žabljak ! Eventually I hope to be able to write about the hikes in this region as well, just give me a few more seasons to get into Montenegrin hiking shape.

Hi Kate. Thank you for all this information. I plan to visit Zabljak (And Durmitor) from 21st – 25th May. I won’t have a car & plan to do the Durmitor Ring Jeep Tour with Summit Tours. Will it be operational during this time? I come from a tropical country. How cold will it be? And lastly, will I be too impaired without a car? I’m assuming I can do taxis for zip lining the Tara canyon, walk to the black lake and maybe hire e-bikes on one day. Thank you so so much!

It’s a good year (2024) to visit Durmitor in spring, as it has been very warm and the Durmitor ring should be fully accessible earlier than normal. It’s still spring however so I would definitely take warm clothing and a waterproof jacket. It’s best to check with the tour company directly as to if their tours as operational. As for getting around, there are many hikes and lakes within decent walking distance of Žabljak and I imagine you can use taxis or tours for longer distances. Enjoy the trip!

Zabljak - the center of mountain tourism in Montenegro

The town of Zabljak, the most high-altitude in the country. It is located in the northern part of Montenegro among the amazingly beautiful Durmitor mountain range. With a population of over four thousand people, the historic city of Zabljak is a magnificent ski resort, beloved by athletes and tourists from many countries. The surroundings of Zabljak are often called the Montenegrin Alps .

Favorable and convenient location allows the city at any time of the year to be an attractive place for cycling, rally races, as well as extreme sports: mountaineering, rafting (downhill on mountain rivers), ski and mountain tourism. It should be especially noted that connection with a diverse local nature gives a complete reboot to thoughts, well-being, and state of mind.

The charming unique nature of the amazing mountainous area influenced the special attractiveness of these places, where not only mountain ski slopes aspire, but also connoisseurs of this extraordinary pristine beauty! Four months a year the mountain snow pleases with its whiteness, and the purest mountain air fills up the chest of each with strength and vigor. And in the summer, the diversity of the beautiful flora and wild fauna of the mountainous area attracts tourists for both organized hiking trails and fascinating independent walks along the forest edges and trails. This mountainous area is inhabited by more than three hundred diverse species of wild animals and over one hundred species of rare birds in their habitat and beauty.

Most of the mountain range, canyons and valleys of local rivers (Tara, Draga, Sušica, Komarnica) form the natural national park of Montenegro . Here, as a result of geological transformations, 18 glacial lakes arose, including the most famous of them - Black with the cleanest water with a dark shade. And it should be especially noted that Montenegrin Durmitor with its pristine beauty is rightfully included in the list of the World Natural Heritage of the international organization UNESCO.

Particular tourists interest is the natural surroundings and the associated history and modernity of the city of Zabljak. The historical name of this settlement was initially «Varezina Voda» due to the abundant water sources used at that time and as curative. Then it was renamed as Ganova. The current name of Zabljak originated in the late nineteenth century. At the same time, construction began on several significant objects for the city, including a school and a church.

The devastating Balkan wars, and then the Second World War, went through many cities of Montenegro, destroying most of the centuries-old buildings. Until today, the only historical building of the ancient Church of the Holy Transfiguration, built in 1862 as a sign of a solid victory in the war against the Turks, remained in Zabljak. The city of Zabljak, like a phoenix bird, rose from the ashes, rebuilt, grew and, together with the amazing nature surrounding this administrative center, became a delightful center of year-round tourism and sports.

Here you can find several excellent modern ski centers for lovers of winter sports and outdoor activities, with a total length of trails over three kilometers. Conveniently located modern lifts to the top of the tracks, training schools - snowboarding and skiing, organized rental of sports equipment, comfortable accommodation, as well as services of travel companies, cafes and restaurants - everything for a wonderful exciting year-round recreation. And just a kilometer from here is another Bosac ski center with a length of about two kilometers with all the necessary amenities and services. In addition to these activities, in the winter in Zabljak, you can choose other various activities for your body and soul: you can ride snowmobiles in its snow-white surroundings, ride sledges, go snowshoeing, give your body exercises in any of several fitness centers, and then enjoy the pleasure of relaxing in an excellent spa complex.

The MonteBASE company carries out transfers in Montenegro from the international airports of Podgorica and Tivat to a place of rest, provides advice and many other services for recreation, accommodation and business in Montenegro.

Where is Zabljak Located?

Zabljak is located in the north of Montenegro in the region of the Durmitor Mountain Range. It is the highest town in all of the Balkans.

Montenegro is a small country that is tucked between Croatia to its north, Albania to its south, and Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia around its east.

Zabljak is all the way in the north east of Montenegro.

How to Reach Zabljak, Montenegro

The first time I visited Zabljak I went by public transportation. I took a local bus from the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica.

What is the Closest Airport to Zabljak?

Podgorica is home to the main airport of the country of Montenegro, and has flights from Athens, Belgrade , Budapest , Dortmund. Istanbul , Krakow, Ljubljana , London, Luxembourg , Lyon, Manchester, Memmingen, Milan , Paris, Pescara, Rome , Vienna , and Warsaw.

Flight Tip:  Using Skyscanner you can check the calendar to see which are the cheapest dates to Podgorica.

While it is possible to reach by public transportation, we truly recommend renting a car, as the drives in the area, and some of the best things to see, can only be done by car.

Rent a car in Podgorica:

However, if you don't feel like renting a car, you can always take the bus, and then do excursions in the area. Just ask your host wherever you are staying and they'll easily be able to get you one (Zabljak is really a small town- so everyone knows everyone).

Entry Requirements for Montenegro

In each article we like to cover a bit of everything. It's important to know entry requirements, especially since there are some very odd rules regarding traveling within the Balkan countries.

Local Adjustments for Zabljak, Montenegro

Whenever you travel there are things that you might not think of, that may be different from where you are coming from. Here are a few of the local adjustments to keep in mind while traveling to Montenegro.

What Language is Spoken in Zabljak?

The official language in Montenegro is Montenegrin. It is actually pretty much the same as all slavic countries in the area, even though they call it Montenegrin. Countries like Serbia , Montenegro , Bosnia & Herzegovina , and Croatia all speak almost exactly the same. They might just have a few different words.

What Currency Do They Use in Montenegro?

The currency used in Montenegro is the euro. This is particularly confusing, as they are not part of the European Union.

While credit card is accepted widely along the coastal towns of Montenegro, Zabljak is a bit different. Being that it is a small mountain town, almost everything is cash based. There are also few ATMs, so it is wise to take out some cash before traveling to Zabljak, Montenegro.

Outlets in Zabljak

Montenegro uses the same plug types as the rest of Europe, which are types C & F. The standard voltage in Montenegro is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.

If you are visiting from the US , make sure to get an energy converter (which is a bit different than just an electrical adapter). This is because the voltage is different.

Is it Ok to Drink Tap Water in Montenegro?

The water in Montenegro is perfectly safe to drink, especially in the mountain town of Zabljak. We suggest bringing a refillable water bottle for hikes and activities around the area.

Tipping Culture in Montenegro

The tipping culture in Montenegro is about 10% of the bill in nice restaurants. If you are going for something small like coffee or a drink, you can simply leave some extra change as a tip.

Things to Do in Zabljak, Montenegro

While Zabljak may be small, it has plenty of activities to keep you occupied and exploring! Here are the highlights of the best things to do in Zabljak, Montenegro.

Walk Around Black Lake

One of the main highlights of visiting Zabljak is the black lake. From above it looks like two round lakes connected by a small passage, making it kind of like an 8-shape. it is located just outside the main town, about 5-10 minutes depending on where you are staying.

Black Lake, Zabljak Montenegro

The Black Lake is one of the most popular spots in Zabljak, Montenegro.

You can grab a taxi to visit here, or park in a lot that is just a 10 minute walk from the lake. Entry is 3 euros, and it takes about an hour and 20 minutes to complete. You can also rent a small row boat, or you can chill at the cute restaurant on the lake that has live music.

Whatever you do, this lake is a must for when you visit Zabljak, Montenegro . We didn't see anyone swimming, so bringing a bathing suit shouldn't be necessary. Make sure to bring sneakers though, as the trail can get pretty rocky at times.

Black Lake, Zabljak Montenegro

There are several benches along the path to relax and enjoy the views.

Relax at Snake Lake

This lake is much smaller than Black Lake, and is also right outside the center of Zabljak, about 10-15 minutes away. There is a trail that goes to the other side of this peaceful round lake, and we saw many people relaxing here with beers and music.

Surrounded by giant pine trees, this place feels like a true hidden gem. It is free of charge to enter, and you can park right next to the trail, which takes just a few minutes to walk (despite the sign saying 25 minutes).

There are also a few other trails in the area. We didn't get a chance to do them, but we saw plenty of other people hiking the area, so imagine it to be pretty scenic.

Snake Lake, Zabljak Montenegro

This lesser visited lake is a great place to hang out with friends.

Stop at the Mountain Viewpoints

One of our favorite parts about Zabljak, Montenegro was the beautiful mountains surrounding the area. We loved driving along the roads, our personal favorite being "Prevoj Selo", which winds through a series of mountains.

Mountain View of Zabljak Montenegro

There are so many beautiful places to stop and enjoy the views.

Along the side of the road you'll find a few great viewpoints, a couple of them actually having big wooden frames to the photos in.

Sedlo frame, Zabljak Montenegro

There are a couple of different frames, located right on the side of the road.

Climb Bobotov Kuk

Bobotov Kuk is the the most beautiful mountain in the Zabljak Mountain region, and is definitely one of the best things to do in the area.

This can be a half day to full day trek, depending on which path you'd like to take. If you start in Zabljak, the hike is about 10 hours round trip. However, if you'd like a bit of a shorter hike, you can start in Sedlo instead, which is about 4-5 hours.

Finally, if you'd like a happy medium, and aren't going with a car, you can start in Sedlo, and finish in Zabljak, which is about 7 hours of hiking. Whatever you choose, you'll get to see some seriously stunning views along the way.

Explore Piva Canyon

The Piva River is bright blue in color, and is surrounded by canyon walls. We didn't see any spots where you could actually swim, but driving around it was simply breath taking. The drive winding around the canyon offered stunning views from whichever side you visit.

There are several viewpoints in the area, and you can simply just look on Google Maps for the small photo icons to find them.

Try Rafting

Want try some more adventurous activities? Well one of the top things to do in Zabljak is to take a rafting trip. Actually, many excursions include a combo of taking you to some lakes, as well as rafting.

This is the perfect option for someone who wants to have a lot of fun, but doesn't have a car to do so. It runs at 50 euros a person, and is a half day trip.

Want to secure a tour in advance that is more complete? Here are a few other options:

Another great thing to do while you're in Zabljak is to check out the beautiful views of Tara Canyon. With a  bridge of arches towering over blue waters, it really is quite the sight.

Take a Trip to Nevidio Canyon

Another hidden gem, and one of the best things to do in Montenegro, is to visit Nevidio canyon. Just an hour outside of Zabljak, it is actually the perfect spot to visit on a day trip, or as a stop if you're visiting the coast of Montenegro before or after Zabljak.

We weren't actually able to visit unfortunately, as we were short on time, but have a friend that lives nearby and recommended it to us.

We hear it can be difficult to navigate, and only should be done with a guide. So speak with a local and add Nevidio Canyon to your Zabljak bucket list!

Here are a few tours that you can take from Zabljak, Niksik, or Kotor:

Local Food & Drink in Zabljak, Montenegro

Zabljak has a different type of cuisine than other areas of Montenegro. While cities like Kotor or Budva specialize in seafood and fresh pastas, Zabljak has a bit of heavier cuisine with a lot of meat, stews, and soups. We went for one of our best meals right in the center of town to a place called Oro, which we definitely recommend.

Moving Around Zabljak, Montengro

The town of Zabljak itself is very small, and there really isn't a need for any kind of transportation other than walking.

However, the majority of the things to do in Zabljak are actually natural places that surround the town. in which you will need to drive or have someone drive you.

In our opinion, the best way to get around is to rent a car. If you want to see nearby places you can also grab a taxi (we suggest asking a local for a phone number). If you want to spend a full day exploring and don't have a car though, then an excursion will be your best bet.

driving in Zabljak Montenegro

By driving you'll get to have amazing views, and stop whenever you'd like.

We didn't find any car rental agencies inside of Zabljak, so if you are coming from another part of Montenegro, you can check the list of cities in the box below:

What to see and visit in Zabljak

Meet Žabljak from the right perspective

Žabljak is a small town located in the beautiful natural surroundings of Durmitor. In addition to the unusual diversity and pristine beauty of nature, it is also made special by the fact that with its altitude of 1456m it bears the title of the highest inhabited place in the Balkans. Although it is rich in serious natural resources for the development of winter tourism, lately it has been significantly more visited by tourists and more attractive during the summer period. This tranquil town lies on the edge of the Durmitor National Park, covering an area of 39,000ha, surrounded by 18 glacial lakes, 5 canyons, 748 natural springs, untouched forests with more than 400 years old trees, ice caves. Black Lake is only a few minute’s drives – about 2km from the center of Zabljak (3 km from our apartments).

1. BOBOTOV KUK (2523 m)

tourist information zabljak

We intentionally started from the highest peak of the Durmitor mountain range. With the obligatory accompaniment of a guide, the beauty you get when you climb to the top is priceless. Bobotov Kuk (2523 m) together with the peaks Bezimeni Vrh (2487 m) and Đevojka (Soa, 2440 m) form the highest rocky ridge of Durmitor called Soa Nebeska, which means “Supporter of the sky”. Soa Nebeska with its rocky ridges on one side falls 800 meters deep into the valley of Škrka, that is. Škrčkih lakes, while on the other side it rises above the “stone sea” of the valley Valoviti Do (2027 m), the highest valley in the Durmitor massif. Bobotov Kuk is a peak of impressive appearance, whether it can be observed from Valoviti Dol, from Žabljak, from Trojni Prevoj, from the shoulders of Zubac, from Prutash, from Lučin Vrh, Medjed, Mina’s Bogaz, Bezimeni Vrh, Čvorovo Bogaz or Mount Vojnik. From wherever you look, the slender and impressive silhouette of Bobotov Kuka dominates the mountain massifs and parts of northern Montenegro. Bobotov Kuk used to be called Ćirova Pećina, after the hunter Ćiro Stijepović from Žabljak. There is still a lot to be said, but we will leave it to you.

2. BLACK LAKE

tourist information zabljak

What makes Žabljak recognizable to domestic and foreign guests is certainly BLACK LAKE. Black Lake in the Durmitor National Park is one of the TOP tourist attractions in Montenegro. Black Lake is the most famous and at the same time the largest of the 18 ice lakes in the Durmitor National Park. With more than 3 km of trails around the lake, is the most popular place for a beautiful unique walk, enjoyment, and recreation. The lake is located at the foot of the mountain peak Medjed and consists of two smaller lakes: Veliko and Malo. These 2 lakes are connected by a narrow sea, which dries up in the summer, creating 2 completely separate lakes. Untouched nature, which is unique in every respect, leaves no one indifferent. If you are a fan of local food, there is a national restaurant with local cuisine on the lake, which offers a fantastic view. The hiking trail around the lake is 3.5 km long and is a mandatory route for all guests who visit it. The height of the lake mostly depends on the famous “shooting” of Celina. Celine is a spring located below the mountain Medjed, which covered the lake. At the time of melting snow, with a strong explosion of sound, Čeline “shoots” and the water falls into the lake in waterfalls. If the year was without snow, this phenomenon is absent and the level of the lake is significantly lower. There is an adventure park on the lake itself, so it will be interesting for the youngest ones as well.

3. ZMINJE LAKE

tourist information zabljak

Zminje Lake is located an hour’s walk from Black Lake, from where the trail leads along Mlinski potok. On the shore there are benches and a place for barbecue. There is a legend connected with Zminje Lake on Durmitor, which explains its unusual name. Namely, according to the legend, there used to be a lot of snakes in this area, and when one winter the area was hit by great cold and snow, the snakes came all the way to this place, trying to keep warm. However, they froze and disappeared in that place, and when the winter receded, a lake remained in which today the forest that surrounds it is painted as patterns on the skin of a snake. In any case a place that is a must visit if you want true peace in the heart of nature.

4. VRAŽJE LAKE

tourist information zabljak

The mountain lake, located at an altitude of 1411 m, is included in the Durmitor National Park. It was named after a legend, which is easy to conclude. Some of the most beautiful paintings from Žabljak were taken on Devil’s Lake. It is located on the territory of the municipality of Zabljak in the south-eastern part of the Durmitor National Park near the village of Novakovici and not far from Fish Lake. Devil’s Lake is rich in fish and very popular among Montenegrin fishermen. The pond is flowing and flows in the shape of a small stream on the south side. Devil’s Lake is located at 1411 m above sea level in the middle of a small flat valley. The average depth is 4 m, the maximum of about 11 m. The lake is very clean and rich in fish, especially trout. A large number of anglers come here in the season when fishing is allowed to try their luck. In the summer season next to Black Lake, Devil’s Lake is a favorite place to swim.

5. JABLAN LAKE

Lake Jablan is located on Durmitor, about 8 km away from Zabljak. It is located at 1791 m above sea level and from the direction of Black Lake it can be reached in about two hours of easy walking. This walking tour from Black Lake to Jablan Lake is one of the most popular walking tours of NP Durmitor. Bounded by mountains and coniferous forests, Jablan Lake is a “bright spot” in the pristine nature that surrounds it, providing visitors with “all the silence of this world”, with the chirping of birds and at the same time eye rest provided by greenery, if you decide to visit this area. summer months. Jablan Lake is, by the way, named after the yellow flower that is so named, and which is abundant in the surrounding meadows, and it is also called “Little Lake”, although it is not so small. The clear water of Lake Jablan is a true mirror of nature, a reflection of perfect harmony without human interference, everything is exactly as it was created… Looking at everything around him, one can only conclude how “powerless” he is against nature, and that at any moment her beauty is actually unsurpassed.

6. ĐURĐEVIĆ TARA BRIDGE AND RAFTING

tourist information zabljak

Built between 1937 and 1940, the bridge on Đurđevića Tara (or simply the Bridge on Tara) is one of the most visited attractions in Montenegro. Hundreds of buses with thousands of tourists come to visit this wonderful combination of nature and architecture/construction every year. At the bridge, there are restaurants where you can relax and enjoy the unique view. Also, don’t forget to buy some of the many souvenirs (from magnets, cups, decorative plates, handmade carpets, T-shirts, etc.) in addition to photos. 172 meters above the Tara River, this bridge at the time it was completed was the largest concrete bridge in Europe. The Tara Bridge has always been a great inspiration to many artists, and its magnificent beauty has been admired even by world-renowned architects and engineers. This is supported by the fact that it is included in the list of 10 most beautiful bridges on the planet. This year, tourists can enjoy the charms of Zip Line, so who lacks a little adrenaline, this will be the right thing for him. Next to the bridge there is a restaurant with a beautiful terrace and excellent cuisine. A few words about RAFTING ON THE TARA RIVER…

tourist information zabljak

The wild, most beautiful, clearest mountain river in Montenegro, called “Tears of Europe”, springs below Komovi (1,250m above sea level) and flows through the canyon 144 km to Šćepan Polje (433m above sea level) with the river Piva makes the Drina, one of the longest and richest in water river of Southeast Europe. The canyon of the river Tara is up to 1,330 m deep, which makes it the deepest canyon in Europe and after Colorado in the world. For the most part, it is located in the Durmitor National Park, which was built on September 4, 1980. listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, meeting as many as three conditions: geological, hydrological and biological phenomena. Tara is also the last unpolluted river in Europe, so you can drink it freely while descending its rapids! Anyone who dares to spend several days with the river will remember for a lifetime the birth of a morning in a canyon or a night when the only bright, narrow stripes of the starry sky and swarms of fireflies. The most attractive part of the canyon, about 100 km long (from Šljivansko to Šćepan Polje), abounds in rapids (over 50) wild tributaries, sparkling waterfalls, lush and diverse forests whose trees are several hundred years old and the sky is up to 50 m high.

rafting

The rafting season on Tara starts in mid-April and lasts until October. The degree of weight of water increases at the beginning of the year, reaches its maximum usually at the beginning of May, when it is also the highest water level, and then decreases in proportion to the water level by the end of summer. With a professional guide, there is no reason to be scared, and the adrenaline you will experience and the beauty you will see is amazing!

The most frequently asked question is WHEN IS TARA THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FOR RAFTING? The answer to this question is ALWAYS! Most adrenaline is in May and the first half of June, but with the water level falling in July, August and September, some disappear, but new beeches and attractive rapids appear that are not noticed while the water is high, so Tara always offers something new, so we often say that we can never cross the same river twice.

7. STEĆCI - GREEK CEMETERY

tourist information zabljak

Although for centuries they look like other people’s, “Greek graves”, stećak tombstones – as a cultural heritage of the people from this area are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. While the locals do not show much interest in “meeting” them, foreign tourists rush to them to learn about the mystique of this special stone and the story they hide “ The site of the Greek Cemetery is located at 1,431 meters above sea level and 11.4 km, southeast of Zabljak, in the hamlet of Novakovici – on the same village road that leads to the necropolis of Bare Zugic, with the Greek Cemetery 2.3 km closer to Zabljak. The necropolis is located on the left side of the road, 200 meters, northwest, from the road and the shore of Fish Lake. It is formed on a slight grassy hill, elongated ellipsoidal in shape, which extends in a north-south direction. It is a smaller necropolis, consisting of 49 stećak tombstones, of which: are 10 slabs, 27 chests, and 12 gables. The central part of the necropolis is visible from the lower elevations of the surrounding terrain because there is a stećak, gabled, of monumental dimensions. Apart from five specimens of the slab type which are of amorphous and natural shape, the remaining stećak tombstones are of fine workmanship and shape. 22 specimens were decorated, as follows: 12 chests and 10 gables. The stećak tombstones are made of local whitish-gray limestone, of various sizes, quality of workmanship, and state of preservation. Decorations include carved and embossed decorative, symbolic, and figural motifs and representations on stećak tombstones, chests, and slabs higher than 30 cm. The most numerous decorative motifs are stripes with oblique lines as a frieze or frame on the vertical sides of the stećak or as a border on the upper horizontal surface of the chest and slabs. The architectural decorative elements of the arcades are the most visually striking. There are decorations made of parallel lines, such as a lattice decoration in the central part on the horizontal sides of the stećak. Of the figural representations, one representation of a stylized man with a sword and shield stands out, and one scene from a hunt. Based on the above, the exceptional location where the necropolis Greek Cemetery near Fish Lake is located, and the workmanship and decoration, it is assumed that members of the feudal lords from those areas were buried in the necropolis near Fish Lake, as well as their families in the XIV and first half of the XV century. The Greek cemetery necropolis near Riblje Lake is in relatively good condition, but various minor damage is evident in most of the stećak tombstones. As the necropolis is located on a natural elevation, it is significantly more exposed to extreme atmospheric influences, which are the cause of the partial dislocation and sinking of most of the necropolis stećak tombstones. The surfaces of all stećak tombstones are covered with lichen and moss, which makes it impossible to inspect the overall condition of each individual stećak tombstone. But anyway, something you really have to see.

8. CANYON NEVIDIO

tourist information zabljak

Nevidio Canyon is a part of Mala Komarnica, a river that springs at the foot of the southern part of Durmitor, more precisely in Dobro Dol. The sinking passages between Boljske grede (2091 m above sea level) and Lojanik (2091 m above sea level) only to reappear in the gentle river valley as a permanent river. The surroundings of the entrance are one of the most beautiful in the Durmitor area. The beauty of this area is the village of Pošćenje with two glacial lakes, the periodic Skakavica waterfall, which scatters the water of Grabovica, which flows into Komarnica, from a seventy-meter high rock. At the very end of the valley at an altitude of 935 m begins the canyon Nevidio or Neviđbog as it is called by the inhabitants of this area. It rightly bears this name because Komarnica suddenly gets lost in a strangely carved entrance and becomes invisible to the human eye.

kanjon nevidio

Thrown and hidden in inaccessible terrain, it aroused attention and curiosity, but there were few organized attempts to get to know and explore it. The first serious but unsuccessful attempts were made are 1957 and 1964. Strange and fantastic stories about the last unconquered canyon of Europe followed. Until August 1965. when members of the P.S.D. “Javorak” from Nikšić, and if with scarce equipment, they passed through the canyon and were the first to present to the world the long-hidden, wild and stunning beauty. Today, Nevidio Canyon finds its place in brochures as a unique tourist attraction. The unrepeatable beauty of the straits, cascades and sparkling beeches guarded by the Nevidio canyon is reason enough to visit this incredible jewel of Montenegro. However, although it does not require special physical readiness, passing through the canyon is not recommended without a guide and adequate equipment. The first contact with the Nevidio canyon overshadows the indescribable beauty, unusual and strange, a beauty to which man is not accustomed. Most of the canyon is in eternal shadow. Due to the vertical rocks, the sun’s rays cannot reach the bottom. Steep and inaccessible rocks are ruled by harsh conditions for vegetation, so the canyon can be said to be a gem of raw nature that enchants. Although most of the published brochures state that the length of the canyon is 3000 m, the actual length of the canyon is 1700 m. The height difference is 125 m (entrance 935 m above sea level, exit 810 m above sea level). The slogan of “Nevidio Canyoning” – “It’s really real” has fully justified its message. Most tourists characterized the passage through the canyon as one of the most beautiful and important events in their lives. Nevidio Canyon is located in the municipality of Savnik in Montenegro. Nevidio Canyon is an integral part of the tourist offer of Zabljak and Montenegro.

9. SAVIN KUK (2313 m)

tourist information zabljak

Savin Kuk (2313 m) is one of the most beautiful, most recognizable and most photographed, and of course the most visited peaks of Durmitor. Savin Kuk is part of an unsurpassed panorama over Black Lake (1416 m). Durmitor is recognizable by this panorama. Savin Kuk is one of the most visited peaks because the cable car stops only a hundred meters below the peak, near Savina Voda. The cable car is part of the Durmitor Ski Center. The peak was named Savin Kuk after Rastko Nemanjić. His spiritual name was Sava, and he was proclaimed a saint (Saint Sava). He often visited Durmitor and Savin Kuk. They say it was his favorite top. According to the legend, the source of Savina Voda (2212 m) was created thanks to the miracle of Saint Sava, who painted a cross on the ground with a stick and the water appeared. Every year, on Ilindan – August 2, people climb to the spring in the hope that the water will bring them happiness, health and peace. The water is put in a bottle and stored until next year. This water is used as a kind of protection against bad influences. Along with Medjed, this is the most famous peak for visitors to Durmitor. The path to the very top was made at the beginning of the twentieth century for the exit of the Montenegrin King Nikola the First. In addition, this peak is attractive because of the legend of Sava’s water, which is claimed to be healing. Less than five kilometers from the center of Zabljak, there is a ski center Savin kuk, on the slopes of the mountain peak of the same name. The highest elevation is at 2,010 m / nv and the height difference is 700 m. The average snow cover is 120 days a year.

At the very top there is a beautiful panoramic view that will definitely leave you breathless!

10. DURMITOR RING

tourist information zabljak

Something we have left for the end, in our opinion, is something that rarely anyone has in their offer. Since it’s a ring, wherever you go, you will return to the starting point. The ring around Durmitor is an 85 km long ring road around Durmitor. The path takes you through villages where you can meet local people, try and buy their local products and learn more about their way of life in this harsh environment. This is a tour that does not require any physical activity, for all those who would like an easy one-day escape to nature. The Durmitor Ring is the easiest way to see a lot of the diversity of the Durmitor National Park, without any physical effort. This includes all types of landscapes, such as deep canyons, peaks, pastures, rivers, streams, forests, etc. The ring around Durmitor is a circular road around the mountain Durmitor, 85 km long over the plateau of Tara and Piva. It passes along the peaks that rise to a height of over 2,000 meters, over high mountain passes (Sedlo, Štuoc) and crosses the Sušica canyon. This magnificent path will surprise you again and again, with its beautiful views, untouched nature and authentic villages, where the way of life has been almost unchanged for hundreds of years. Riding the ring around Durmitor is an unforgettable experience for all nature lovers. As we said, this route is most often crossed by car, but sports fans often dare to cross it by bicycle.

Sober Travelers Find Something to Savor in Wine Country

Mocktail trails, olive oil tours and elevated dining experiences are among the many ways the renowned wine-producing areas of Sonoma, Mendoza and Tuscany are appealing to sober or sober-curious travelers.

A green, brown and yellow illustration of a woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat and biking through a wine vineyard.

By Christine Chitnis

Amy Snook knows more about wine than your average traveler. Originally from California, she now lives in the Douro Valley of Portugal, her partner works in the wine industry, and she has visited 47 countries, many of which have celebrated viticulture. But seven years ago, on a trip to Mendoza, a winemaking region in the foothills of Argentina’s Andes Mountains, she opted to abstain from drinking alcohol, a decision she would repeat in future travels.

“It’s such a long flight to Argentina, and I was only there for 10 days,” said Ms. Snook, 34, a publishing professional. “I’m aware of how alcohol affects me, and I chose to prioritize feeling amazing every day of the trip over dealing with a hangover.”

During her visit, Ms. Snook bicycled between vineyards, reveled in breathtaking scenery, relaxed with spa treatments and engaged with sommeliers and winemakers, coming away with a new appreciation for sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

“The obvious question when you tell someone that you aren’t drinking is, ‘Out of all the places you could go, why travel to wine country?’” she said. “But to me, it makes perfect sense because these regions offer all the perks of luxury travel — wellness amenities, beautiful landscapes and fine dining.”

With 41 percent of Americans seeking to reduce their alcohol intake, according to a consumer-sentiment study released in January by NCSolutions, Ms. Snook’s experience is part of a larger trend: the rise of sober-curious or mindful drinking. While sober travel is hardly a new concept, its popularity is surging to new heights — particularly among younger generations — and forcing a reckoning in the wine industry. The 2024 State of the U.S. Wine Industry report , an annual forecast of market conditions and trends written by the wine-business analyst Rob McMillan, found that 52 percent of consumers ages 21 to 34 believe that consuming alcohol, even in moderation, is bad for your health.

This trend is reshaping travel to world-class wine destinations like Sonoma County, in California, as well as Mendoza and Tuscany. Blessed with temperate climates, extended growing seasons, fertile soils, rich histories and breathtaking vistas, these renowned wine locales are expanding their offerings to attract drinkers and nondrinkers.

Here are some of the restaurants, tour groups and wineries in those regions that are reinventing the travel experience to be more inclusive of the sober-curious.

Dining in Sonoma

If wine is a true expression of the land, embodying the unique characteristics of its soil, weather and the meticulous craftsmanship of those who cultivate it, can you still forge that connection without drinking?

At Cyrus , a Michelin-starred fine dining destination in Geyserville , Calif., the answer is a resounding yes. Sonoma County, double the size of neighboring Napa, made conscious decisions to protect and diversify its land use, ensuring grapes as well as agricultural crops were grown. Douglas Keane, Cyrus’s owner and chef, highlights the local harvest by working with small farms and purveyors to source his ingredients. Crosnes — a Chinese artichoke — from Alexander Valley Vineyards gardens, yuzu and finger limes from the citrus grower David Levine, and cheesefrom Andante Dairy have all ended up on Cyrus’s menu.

Also on the menu: Kally , an alcohol-free wine alternative produced with housemade organic verjuice and sourced from Northern California. Served at more than 15 other Michelin-starred restaurants, Kally’s bottles include Early Chardonnay, which is crisp, bright and changes flavor and aroma as it moves across the palate, similar to a fine wine. A tart, vibrant Golden Sparkler has notes of jasmine and citrus, and a floral, fruity Rosé Sparkler offers hints of strawberry and hibiscus.

“Chefs and sommeliers are interested in having precise nonalcoholic pairings. Their food was created to be prepared with sophisticated drinks, not just sparkling water,” said Scott Mitic, who created the beverage along with his wife, Katie.

Customers, too, appreciate having a choice, he said, noting that many of Kally’s most loyal drinkers are wine enthusiasts. “This is not an abstinence movement; it is a moderation movement.”

Cyrus Schultz, the wine director and sommelier at Cyrus, aims to create drinks that make sober guests feel just as special, if not more, than those indulging in traditional wine pairings. His nonalcoholic creations include the Rosé Champagne, an effervescent blend of coconut, white sesame, cherry blossom and lime, and the Apple Martini, a sweet, herbaceous concoction of pink lady apple, fennel and mint olive oil.

“The intention is never to mimic alcohol products, but to construct the pairings similarly to how a chef looks at a menu — different textures, temperatures and flavor profiles,” Mr. Schultz said.

These efforts are not limited to one restaurant. Chris Vomvolakis, senior manager of consumer public relations at Sonoma County Tourism , said bars, restaurants and wineries across the region are recognizing that it’s not all about wine.

The town of Healdsburg recently created the Mocktail Trail , with eight participating restaurants, and Meadowcroft Wines in the town of Sonoma curated a flight of original zero-proof cocktails. David Messerli, Meadowcroft’s marketing and strategy director, said the winery encourages guests “to discern aromas, flavors and nuances, much like they would with wine.”

“For those opting out of alcohol, we felt there was more we could do,” he said. “People have various reasons for abstaining from alcohol, and no one should feel excluded because of it.”

Women-led luxury in Mendoza

Mendoza, renowned for its malbec wines and stunning Andean landscapes, is no stranger to luxury accouterments, but sober guests? That is a newer phenomenon. “We have definitely noticed an increase in guests seeking nonalcoholic travel options in recent years,” said Victoria Stiles, sales manager at Cavas Wine Lodge , a luxury 18-room hotel set amid a 55-acre vineyard.

At Cavas, wine may be the main attraction, but guests can book spa treatments using vine and grape-seed extracts, join yoga sessions on the private terrace overlooking the Andes and vineyards, and take full-day hiking excursions to Aconcagua Provincial Park, a rugged, mountainous destination that is home to Mount Aconcagua, South America’s highest peak.

Wild Terrains , a certified B-Corp travel company specializing in experiences for women, has planned three days of a 10-day Argentina tour to be sober-inclusive in Mendoza. Built around women-owned businesses, stops include boutique lodging at Entre Cielos , horseback riding in the Andean foothills, home-cooked asado at Estancia Los Chulengos and a private dining experience at Michelin-starred Zonda Cocina de Paisaje . The meal offers special mocktail pairings with distinct flavors like lemon verbena, beets and burro, an herb used to make digestive teas and infusions.

“In Mendoza, our trip centers on talented female winemakers who are pushing boundaries in a historically male-dominated industry,” said Lauren Bates, founder of Wild Terrains. “While these experiences include wine tastings, we want sober travelers to feel intentionally included even if they are skipping the wine tasting.”

Sofia Pescarmona, owner of the Bodega Lagarde vineyard and Zonda Cocina de Paisaje, said that while the restaurant experience aims to showcase their wine, nondrinkers will also appreciate it.

“We truly believe we can offer an elevated experience for those who don’t drink wine by highlighting other seasonal produce grown on our property,” she said.

Tasting olive oil in Tuscany

Wine tastings epitomize indulgence, especially immersed in the heart of Tuscany, when visitors can savor glass after glass of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Salvatore Ferragamo Jr., chief executive of the Il Borro wine estate and grandson of the fashion house’s founder, encourages guests to find other ways to indulge.

“The olive harvests in the autumn produce the region’s spicy, piquant ‘green gold,’” said Mr. Ferragamo.

Il Borro, in Tuscany’s Valdarno, is a meticulously restored medieval village that includes 58 suites, three vacation villas, two restaurants, stables, working vineyards and olive groves. Olive oil production began in 1996, following the recovery of varieties like Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino that had long been neglected. Now, after touring some 80 acres of organic groves, guests can engage in a tasting experience of two distinct oils, one full-bodied with floral, fruity and grassy aromas, the other robust, peppery and dark.

Another option, Tuscan Organic Tours , offers immersive daylong experiences that delve into wine and oil but also other rich agricultural offerings. Delicious tours with private transportation highlight tastes and flavors that include Pecorino di Pienza, one of the most renowned Italian cheeses, saffron and fresh pastas. The tours include visits to organic farms, lunches, tastings, and opportunities to participate in cheese-making and saffron harvesting.

Visa Information for Nationals of Haiti

The Department of State has suspended visa services in Haiti

The information below outlines options Haitian nationals seeking U.S. visas may consider.

Immigrant Visas

Immigrant visas are for foreign nationals who intend to live and/or work permanently in the United States.  In most cases, a relative or employer sponsors the individual by filing a petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  Further information on immigrant visas can be found here:  https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate.html .

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince has suspended routine immigrant visa appointments until further notice. Immigrant visa applicants who can travel to another U.S. embassy or consulate that processes immigrant visas and remain in that country for the duration of their visa processing should consider requesting the transfer of their case from U.S. Embassy Port-au-Prince using the instructions below:

If the case is at U.S. Embassy Port-au-Prince :   Applicants may contact a new U.S. embassy or consulate in writing to request the transfer of their immigrant visa case.  Applicants can find the contact information for Immigrant Visa Units at U.S. embassies and consulates at https://usembassy.gov/ .  The applicant should provide evidence, if possible, of their presence in the country to which they would like their case to be transferred, or documentation of their ability to enter and remain in that country for the duration of the immigrant visa process.

If the Case is Pending at the National Visa Center (NVC):   Applicants may contact NVC at https://nvc.state.gov/inquiry to request a transfer to another immigrant visa processing post.  Applicants should be prepared to provide evidence of the ability to enter and remain in the requested country for the duration of the process.

Applicants may also request NVC expedite their case at the new consular section by emailing [email protected] and providing the specific reason for their expedite request.  Please be aware expedited case processing does not apply to family preference visa categories where a case is not current.

The Department of State continues to communicate with U.S. adoptive families in the intercountry adoption process and adoption service providers regarding recent developments in Haiti, and we are assessing the situation as it unfolds.  The Department is responding to individual inquiries from Adoption Service Providers and prospective adoptive parents.

We are working as quickly as possible to identify options for continued case processing and assisted departure for Haitian children in the intercountry adoption process, while meeting U.S. laws, regulations, and our Hague  Convention obligations as well as minimizing the risk of Haitian children coming to the United States with no clear path to legal status .

We are also working with Haiti’s child welfare authority, the Institut du Bien-Être Social et de Recherches (IBESR), to assist Haitian adoptive children in obtaining exit permissions, while we work on solutions at other stages of the intercountry adoption process.

Prospective adoptive parents should remain in regular contact with their adoption service providers in the United States.

U.S. citizens who have adopted Haitian children through the domestic Haitian process (rather than an intercountry adoption) and have an appointment date from USCIS for an N-600K interview may apply for a B-1/B-2 visa for the child to attend the interview and naturalize.  This is appropriate only for children who do not intend to reside in the United States.  See Nonimmigrant Visas  below.

Nonimmigrant Visas

Most nonimmigrant visa categories require the applicant to demonstrate intent to leave the United States after a temporary stay .

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince has suspended routine nonimmigrant visa appointments until further notice.  T he U.S. Embassy in Port au Prince can only accept expedited nonimmigrant visa appointments for life-or-death medical emergencies (with proof of travel plans) or to facilitate travel for a child with a confirmed USCIS appointment for a naturalization interview based on a Form N-600K .  Applicants can submit a request for an expedited NIV appointment by following the instructions provided at https://www.ustraveldocs.com/ht/en/nonimmigrant-visa .

Nonimmigrant visa applicants may apply at any embassy or consulate where they are physically present and where appointments are available.  A full list of embassies and consulates is available here: https://www.usembassy.gov/ .  Appointment wait times are available at U.S. Visas (state.gov) .  Once an interview appointment is made, applicants can request an expedited appointment but must describe the unique circumstances that justify such a request.

Air Travel Consumer Report: January 2024 Numbers

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today released its Air Travel Consumer Report (ATCR) on airline operational data compiled for the month of January 2024 for on-time performance, mishandled baggage, and mishandled wheelchairs and scooters. The ATCR is designed to assist consumers with information on the quality of services provided by airlines.

DOT expects that airlines will operate flights as scheduled and that when they do not, airlines will provide consumers the services consumers have been promised when a flight is canceled or delayed because of an airline issue. After a two-year DOT push to improve the passenger experience, the 10 largest airlines now guarantee meals and free rebooking on the same airline and nine guarantee hotel accommodations. Consumer-friendly information regarding airline commitments to their customers is available on the Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard at FlightRights.Gov. DOT also pushed airlines to provide fee-free family seating and rolled out a new family seating dashboard that highlights the airlines that guarantee fee-free family seating, and those of the 10 largest that do not, making it easier for parents to avoid paying junk fees to sit with their children when they fly.

In addition, DOT is improving transportation for individuals with disabilities. In July 2023, DOT finalized a rule which requires airlines to make lavatories on new, single-aisle aircraft more accessible. Then, in February 2024, DOT issued a proposal to address other barriers that Americans who use a wheelchair encounter when it comes to air travel by, among other things, mandating enhanced training for airline employees and contractors who physically assist passenger with disabilities and handle passengers’ wheelchairs.

Further, when necessary, DOT takes enforcement action against airlines and ticket agents that fail to comply with the Department’s aviation consumer protection requirements. In 2023, DOT issued the largest fines in the history of the consumer protection office. This includes a $140 million penalty against Southwest Airlines for failing passengers during the 2022 holiday meltdown. That penalty, which was in addition to over $600 million DOT already ensured was refunded by Southwest to passengers, requires Southwest to establish a $90 million compensation system for future passengers affected by significant delays and cancellations. DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds to travelers since the pandemic began.

Flight Operations

The 560,352 flights operated in January 2024 were 99.56% of the 562,845 flights operated in January 2023. Operated flights in January 2024 were down 0.44% year-over-year from the 562,845 flights operated in January 2023 and down 7.18% month-over-month from 603,756 flights operated in December 2023.

"U.S. Airlines Operated Domestic Flights: January 2022-January 2024. Operated=Scheduled - Canceled"

In January 2024, the 10 marketing network carriers reported 582,425 scheduled domestic flights, 22,073 (3.8%) of which were canceled. In December 2023, airlines scheduled 606,218 domestic flights, 2,462 (1.3%) of which were canceled. In January 2023, airlines scheduled 573,877 domestic flights, 11,032 (1.9%) of which were canceled.

On January 6, 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered the grounding of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with a mid-cabin door plug installed operated by U.S. airlines or in U.S. territory. On January 24, 2024, FAA cleared all such aircraft to return to service after each aircraft operator successfully completed a new inspection process approved by the FAA. Alaska Airlines and United Airlines have informed the DOT that the grounding of the 737 MAX9 aircraft with the mid-cabin door plug installed has impacted their on-time statistics during this reporting period.

Complaints About Airline Service

The release of air travel service complaint data in the Air Travel Consumer Report (ATCR) has been delayed primarily because of the continued high volume of complaints against airlines and ticket agents received by the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP) and the time needed to review and process these consumer complaints. The Department is investing in modernizing its system for handling consumer complaints with the support of a Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) investment to improve the customer experience for the tens of thousands of consumers who use the system each year and enable OACP to more effectively engage in oversight of the airline industry.

As DOT modernizes its system, given the continued high volume of air travel service complaints concerning airlines and ticket agents, DOT has revised how it processes consumer complaints received after June 1, 2023. From June 2023 until the date its system is modernized, DOT intends to revise the ATCR to display consumer submissions (complaints, inquiries, and opinions) as opposed to complaints for this period. The Department will continue to display civil rights complaints in the ATCR in a similar manner as before and anticipates publishing submission and civil rights complaint numbers in spring.

Tarmac Delays

In January 2024, airlines reported 71 tarmac delays of more than three hours on domestic flights, compared to five tarmac delays of more than three hours on domestic flights reported in December 2023. In January 2024, airlines reported six tarmac delays of more than four hours on international flights, compared to zero tarmac delays of more than four hours on international flights reported in December 2023.

Airlines are required to have and adhere to assurances that they will not allow aircraft to remain on the tarmac for more than three hours for domestic flights and four hours for international flights without providing passengers the option to deplane, subject to exceptions related to safety, security, and Air Traffic Control related reasons. An exception also exists for departure delays if the airline begins to return the aircraft to a suitable disembarkation point to deplane passengers by those times.

The Department investigates extended tarmac delays.

Mishandled Baggage

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers handled 37.4 million bags and posted a mishandled baggage rate of 0.75%, higher than both the rate of 0.50% in December 2023 and the rate of 0.73% in January 2023.

The Department began displaying the mishandled baggage data as a percentage (i.e., per 100 bags enplaned) in January 2022. This is consistent with the manner that the mishandled wheelchairs and scooters rate is calculated and displayed.     In the prior three calendar year reports (2019 to 2021), the Department calculated the mishandled baggage rate based on the number of mishandled bags per 1,000 checked bags.

Mishandled Wheelchairs and Scooters

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers reported checking 56,659 wheelchairs and scooters and mishandling 836 for a rate of 1.48% mishandled wheelchairs and scooters, higher than the rate of 1.39% mishandled in December 2023 and lower than the rate of 1.47% mishandled in January 2023.

As described earlier, in February 2024, the Department announced its proposal to strengthen its rule implementing the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) to address the serious problems that individuals with disabilities using wheelchairs and scooters face when traveling by air that impact their safety and dignity, including mishandled wheelchairs and scooters and improper transfers to and from aircraft seats, aisle chairs, and personal wheelchairs. The proposed rule would require that airlines meet strict standards in accommodating passengers with disabilities by setting new standards for prompt, safe, and dignified assistance, mandating enhanced training for airline employees and contractors who physically assist passengers with disabilities and handle passengers’ wheelchairs, and outlining actions that airlines must take to protect passengers when a wheelchair is damaged during transport. The proposed rule also clarifies that damaging or delaying the return of a wheelchair is an automatic violation of the ACAA.

Bumping/Oversales

Bumping/oversales data, unlike other air carrier data, are reported quarterly rather than monthly. For the fourth quarter of 2023, the 10 U.S. reporting marketing carriers posted an involuntary denied boarding, or bumping, rate of 0.20 per 10,000 passengers, lower than both the rate of 0.35 in the third quarter of 2023 and the rate of 0.30 in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Incidents Involving Animals

As part of its IT modernization, DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP) is improving the options for covered carriers to submit their monthly and annual Reports on Incidents Involving Animals During Air Transport. While the new system is being developed, OACP is permitting covered carriers to delay submission of reports on incidents involving animals during air transport. Annual data on such incidents will be published when DOT receives carriers’ complete submissions of the 2023 data.

In January 2024, carriers reported zero incidents involving the death, injury, or loss of an animal while traveling by air, equal to the zero reports filed in both December 2023 and in January 2023.

Consumers may file air travel consumer or civil rights complaints online at   https://secure.dot.gov/air-travel-complaint , or they may mail a complaint to the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection, U.S. Department of Transportation, C-70, W96-432, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590.
