Grand Canyon Tours from Phoenix & Scottsdale

The majority of Grand Canyon visitors who are not from the Southwest fly into Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, AZ. The most direct route from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon South Rim is about 230 miles. There are several Grand Canyon tour companies that leave from Phoenix or Scottsdale, though there are fewer options for this service directly from the Metro Phoenix are than if you were leaving from northern Arizona. If you are wanting to head north towards the Grand Canyon directly from the Phoenix airport, Arizona Shuttle offers transportation service to Sedona and Flagstaff every couple of hours. But most visitors post up in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area for a few days and enjoy what this resort city has to offer before heading towards the wilds of the Great Southwest. Visiting the Grand Canyon for a day trip is definitely doable, but it makes for a long day. With the drive taking just under four hours each way, your trip will be no less breath-taking, but likely abbreviated. Going on an air or helicopter tour once you get to the canyon is another great way to make the most of your time at this Natural Wonder of the World. If spending time at the Grand Canyon is important to you, consider staying a night in Sedona , Flagstaff , or Williams .

Nothing can prepare you for that initial Grand Canyon experience, where the earth opens up beyond the forest, giving way to a vast, craggy abyss. Elk and deer roam the rims, and a network of roads winds between different viewpoints, each one offering a fresh perspective on a natural wonder. The South Rim is accessible throughout the year and can be accessed most readily on a tour from Phoenix, or its adjoining city of Scottsdale, in Arizona, which are roughly 230 miles (370km) away. These five tours take care of the details, letting you make the most of your Grand Canyon trip.

"You guys have your act together. It was like a dream come true for a first timer traveling alone. Nothing went wrong, it all went right. You can't go wrong with Caravan. It's an adventure without the risk. Pure fun, and the new friends you will make are priceless." Ms. K.P., Boynton Beach, Florida
"This tour was the most amazing trip on which we've ever been. This was our first trip out West and we could not have asked for a better, more enjoyable and more valued tour! The hotels were great, the sights were breathtaking, and the meals were excellent. I enjoyed the food and the friendly staff. I would recommend this tour along with our same tour director and driver. We never felt rushed and we can't wait to go on another Caravan tour. Thank you for a truly memorable and extremely valued tour. Keep up the good work." Mr. & Mrs. S.P., Harrisonburg, Virginia
"This is a 'five star' trip that everyone should take the time to do. Enjoyed the leisurely pace, delicious meals, and outstanding side trips. Not only was there breathtaking scenery in the Grand Canyon, but everyday promised more and better things to see. Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Lake Powell, Monument Valley, I can't say enough good things. Thanks to our tour director, we learned SO MUCH about our country's history in the West. This was our first Caravan tour. Caravan is a very organized, efficient tour group that we will take again. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!" Mr. & Mrs. J.G., Venice, Florida
"I have always been a cruise person, but you have converted me! The whole trip was one wonderful sightseeing adventure. I am so glad we took a guided tour as opposed to driving so both of us could see the sights rather than one driving and missing it all. The tour director and driver were excellent in alerting us in advance of upcoming views. I had no idea how beautiful the area was and how unique each park would be. Being able to see the diverse areas on the tour made it even more spectacular than I could have imagined. This trip was way beyond my expectations. I have only done day tours so I was not sure what to expect. By the end, I felt like everyone was family. I have never been so sorry to see a trip end. If all the tours are as good as this was and the tour directors are as knowledgeable as ours, we will be on more Caravan tours. I have read about all the canyons, but I never imagined the beauty of each of them and the other areas we visited." Mr. & Mrs. J.R. Yorktown, Virginia
"Caravan is so value packed and has attended to the most minute detail to get the most value for our money. The hotels were terrific! Loved not having to deal with luggage. Once on the tour, they treated us like royalty! The meals were all EXCELLENT! I was so impressed that Caravan provided such wonderful meals in our tour cost. We absolutely had the 'dream team' with our tour director and driver! I enjoyed the sightseeing activities and I also enjoyed the 'free time' in each National Park. The tram system allowed each of us to do as much as we wanted. It was our first guided tour, but it won't be the last. I wouldn't choose another company if Caravan has a package of where we want to go. Some friends drove from Oklahoma and made the same trip. They spent twice the money and didn't see half of what we did. This was my first Caravan tour and it will not be my last. It was exactly what was described in the brochure. It was smoothly run and enjoyable. Thank you for making it so great for so many for so long! It was a great trip and we would choose Caravan in the future!" Mr. & Mrs. J.W., Downers Grove, Illinois
"The entire tour lived up to and exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed the fact that I didn't have to drive. The hotels and meals were taken care of as well as luggage handled professionally and in a very timely manner. We really enjoyed this tour and are of the opinion that we would struggle to duplicate it entirely on our own. Very enjoyable, a good mix of people from different parts of our country who became our friends on the road. In terms of bang for the buck, it is a deal hard to beat in today's world of high gasoline prices. We look forward to another trip with Caravan, next year to Yellowstone, hoping to see our same tour guide again." Mr. & Mrs. B.W., Monroe, North Carolina
"Overall, a wonderful eight days, during which I was exposed to sights I never thought existed. The tour was well conducted, the accommodations were excellent and the food was great. Don't know how you do it for what you charge. Will strongly consider other Caravan offerings, and recommend this tour to others." Mr. & Mrs. D.B., Pinellas Park, Florida

About this Guide to Grand Canyon Tours from Phoenix

Inside this local guide to taking a Grand Canyon tour from Phoenix, you’ll find expert advice about:

  • The easiest way to get to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix
  • Is it worth it to drive to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix?
  • Why you should take a tour of the Grand Canyon
  • The best Grand Canyon tours from Phoenix
  • Additional resources for exploring the Grand Canyon

How to Get to the Grand Canyon From Phoenix

The Grand Canyon is directly north of Phoenix, but it’s a pretty long drive. The quickest way heads through Flagstaff and takes 3.5 hours without any traffic.

You could also detour through Sedona via Highway 89 for an extra road trip stop on the way to Flagstaff, which will add about half an hour to the drive.

Pro Tip: If you’re going to swing through Sedona, you might as well spend some time there, as a quick drive won’t be nearly enough to take it all in!

Is It Worth Driving to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix?

I’m not going to lie to you, it’s a long drive from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. It should be just under a 4-hour drive to the South Rim, but if you hit typical weekend traffic, it will definitely take longer.

I’ve flown into Phoenix to get to the Grand Canyon several times, but I always spend at least several days at the Grand Canyon to make the trek worthwhile.

If you want to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, it is an even longer drive of around 7 hours from Phoenix.

Although it is quite the schlep, it can be worth it if you’re seeking seclusion and stunning views, both of which you can find at Toroweap Overlook, which is one of the most underrated attractions at the Grand Canyon, in my opinion.

Local Tip : Be aware that the Grand Canyon sits at a higher elevation than Phoenix, so expect it to be much cooler when you arrive there, and be prepared with layers, especially if you’re visiting the Grand Canyon in winter .

Why It’s Worth Taking a Tour of the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is truly one of the most amazing places in the US. Seeing the stunning, sprawling vistas will be a memory you’ll never forget, and it is worth taking a tour to explore the best Grand Canyon views in this awesome landscape.

Sunset tours of the Grand Canyon are an extra special experience, with the sky catching fire over the red rock formations of the canyon.

Pro Tip: Tours are best for folks who want to learn about the history and geology of this place. It’s also a great idea for those who don’t want to drive and would instead want to enjoy the scenery.

Of course, if you’re a photographer, a tour is a great idea because you’ll get access to some unique views that you may not catch if you go on your own. But, you can definitely go it alone and enjoy spots like Hermit Road .

My pick for the #1 🏆 tour of the Grand Canyon from Phoenix is this Grand Canyon South Rim tour . Not only do you get to fly ✈️ over the widest part of the canyon, but you’ll get to do a cool Hummer tour too.

He made suggestions along the way that he felt our family would enjoy. He accomodated our kids well (8yo and 10yo) and developed a great raport with them. He guided us to the best places to take amazing family photos and even went out of his way to show us live elk in the wild. Great job Rod.” Robert ( read more reviews now )

You could choose to visit Cameron Trading Post on the Navajo Nation to browse and shop for jewelry, pottery, and rugs, drive through the town of Williams (known as the Gateway to the Grand Canyon) along Route 66, or see the gorgeous Painted Desert.

Depart from Phoenix during this epic tour and head through the Sonoran Desert, studded with saguaro cactus, on your way to Sedona.

Stop at Bell Rock to see the red rock formations that Sedona is famous for, then take a brief walk around Uptown to see the shops and galleries.

Take the scenic route through Oak Creek Canyon on the way to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

“Great tour guide, live rhe information given on the trip up and back. Stoped at 4 great viewing places along the southern rim. Highly recommend, much better than driving yourself from Scotsdale!” Cheryl ( read more reviews now )

You will be driven to a few viewpoints, and also have some free time to explore on your own.

Visit attractions including El Tovar Lodge, Hopi House, Mather Point, and Yavapai Point before heading back to Phoenix.

8. Grand Canyon with Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon Van Tour

⭐️ Rating: 4.5/5.0 (795 Reviews) Price: $198.00 per person Duration: 13 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Varies Operator: Across Arizona Tours, LLC Details: Read more on Viator Now!

You’ll head from Phoenix to your first stop in Sedona, where you’ll visit the Red Rock Ranger Station to take photos of the incredible red rocks that make up the landscape of Sedona.

Then drive through the stunning Oak Creek Canyon as you make your way north to the Grand Canyon.

After you arrive at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, you’ll make stops at the best viewpoints along Desert View East Rim Drive.

“Chris Gallagher was our tour guide. He did a phenomenal job! Knew a lot of interesting facts about the areas we traveled through and entertained us with fun stories. Gave us adequate time at each stop. Five stars for Chris!!” Deb ( read more reviews now )

You’ll also have a chance to walk around on your own and visit El Tovar Lodge and Mary Colter’s Hopi House. On your drive back to Phoenix, you’ll stop for dinner (at your own expense).

My pick for the #1 🏆 tour of the Grand Canyon from Phoenix is this Grand Canyon South Rim tour. Not only do you get to fly ✈️ over the widest part of the canyon, but you’ll get to do a cool Hummer tour too.

Itinerary? There isn't one.

Your tour is a blank canvas waiting for you to explore and create your own masterpiece. With your incredible Guide providing suggestions and insights, your day is yours to craft into an unforgettable adventure overflowing with wonder and excitement. Whether you’re starting from the Phoenix area or staying in Sedona, Flagstaff, or Williams, your journey will begin at the perfect time for you. On the ride up, your Guide will engage your group with intriguing questions and offer suggestions on possible stops along the way. With your family being unique and special, your Tour should be just as exceptional. Once you reach the Grand Canyon, you’re in charge of your experience. Take a walk, visit as many overlook spots as possible, or simply rest and absorb the breathtaking views. The day is yours to savor and enjoy in any way you choose. As the day draws to a close, you’ll head home with unforgettable memories and a sense of accomplishment and assurance that you crafted your own adventure.

Adding Additional Stops

What is the BIGGEST advantage of our service?  FREEDOM.!

Freedom to CREATE the perfect day by adding additional stops.  Unlike set itinerary tours; with us you’re free to adjust your day, add stops, or simply head straight to your destination.  If it’s possible, we’ll make it happen.

EXAMPLE: When you placed your reservation you were planning on heading straight to the Grand Canyon.  As your tour approached, your plans changed.  A few additional people want to tag along and they’d love to make a quick stop at the Chapel of the Holy Cross (Sedona).  The morning of your tour you ask your Guide to stop, and it’s added.  That simple.

REMEMBER: If there are additional fees to enter, you would pay those upon your arrival.  They would not be included.  ALSO , if you have an event planned at a specific time (such as a helicopter tour), you might be restricted on time.

We answer the,why.

The Grand Canyon, a masterpiece of nature’s artistry, beckons you with its awe-inspiring beauty and timeless wonder. As you stand on its precipice, you’ll feel the Earth’s ancient history unfurl before your eyes.

Imagine gazing into a vast chasm, where layers of red, orange, and gold hues stretch as far as the eye can see, revealing millions of years of geological history. The sheer magnitude of the Grand Canyon is humbling, reminding us of the planet’s incomprehensible scale.

As the sun paints the canyon’s walls with shifting shades throughout the day, you’ll witness a symphony of colors that defy imagination. The experience is not just visual; it’s spiritual. The grandeur of this natural wonder has the power to awaken a sense of wonder and gratitude within your soul.

Hike along its trails to explore hidden treasures, feeling its powerful forces carve through rock and time.

The Grand Canyon is more than a destination; it’s a pilgrimage to the very heart of nature’s majesty. It will ignite your adventurous spirit, nourish your soul, and leave you with memories to cherish for a lifetime. Don’t wait; go and experience the Grand Canyon’s breathtaking grandeur for yourself. It’s a journey you’ll treasure forever.

Grand Canyon Tours - Todd's Amazing Tours

GROUND :   Our original, award winning ground tour.  Featuring our Internationally recognized Tour Guides.  A “at your own pace” , luxury adventure.  Simply, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

ADD WHEN BOOKING YOUR RESERVATION

GROUND:   We’ve combined our incredible ground tour with a private charter flight back to the Phoenix area.

FLIGHT:   It’d be a shame to miss flying over the Canyon.  It’s right there!  Your flight includes a 30 minute tour over the heart of the Canyon before heading home.  Flight time approx 1.5 hours.

tours grand canyon from phoenix

GROUND:   Our ground tours are, in themselves, a amazing experience, we wanted to make them even better.

HELICOPTER :   From the ground Sedona is aweinspering.  Seeing it from the air, life changing.  Your pilot will take you into seldom seen red rock canyons and hover over red sandstone rock monuments.  Memories you’ll never forget.

FLIGHT:   After your incredible ground tour, you’ll board your private charter bound for the Phoenix Valley.  Not before first touring the Grand Canyon by air.  Flight time approx 1.5 hours.

NOTE: The helicopter portion of the tour is NOT included in the base price.  Tickets are sold per-person and selected during checkout.

  • CHARTERED VEHICLE – NOT PURCHASED TOUR :   You’re “Chartering” your vehicle of choice for the day.  Where you choose to go, is up to you.  During checkout you’ll be asked to give us an idea of where you’re heading, but that can be changed ANYTIME.  Even on the morning of your adventure.
  • SUGGEST not MANDATE :   We will only “suggest” destinations.  You will have the option of adding, or deleting destinations to fit your needs.
  • EXAMPLE :   You select town of Tombstone (home of the OK Corral) as your destination when making your reservation online, but the morning of your trip you decide to go the Grand Canyon instead.  Not a problem, you’ll go to the Grand Canyon.  You’re in charge.
  • ENTRY FEES :   You will be responsible to paying the entry fee into the National Park, State Park, or any other destination that requires a fee to enter (in the past you were required to pay when booking).
  • EXAMPLE:   As part of the commercial tour, the entry fee into the Grand Canyon National Park is $8 per-person over 16 years of age.  You’re a private party entering, so it’s a flat fee of $35 (regardless of how many people are in the vehicle).    Depending on your group size, this could save you a few dollars.
  • SEASONAL PASSES:   National Park seasonal passes can be used for entry (they are not valid when part of a commercial tour).
  • ADDITIONAL STOPS:   No additional fees for added stops.
  • EXAMPLE:   Under our old system, many of the stops outside of the primary destination (Sedona, Montezuma’s Castle) were EXTRA.  Under our new system, there is no additional fee.  You’ll simply be responsible for any additional fees to enter.

L IMITATIONS:

Safety is our ONLY CONCERN.

PLEASE READ BELOW:

  • TIME LIMITS:   You’re Chartering the vehicle for 13 hours MAX.  Typically, your day will end at 8PM (7AM – 8PM).  However, if you go over this time, there may be an extra fee.
  • EXAMPLE:  Your family/group decides to cram as many stops in as possible, and each stop took longer than expected.  You arrive home after 8PM.  An additional charge of $200 per-hour will be added.
  • ADDITIONAL DAY:   If you charter a vehicle for ONE DAY, and want to add an additional day, there will be additional fees.  An example of these fees may be a hotel room for your Driver, additional vehicle Charter fees, food fees, etc.  ALSO, it may not be possible, since someone may have the vehicle chartered.

Suggested Departure if you’re headed to the Grand Canyon:

  • 7AM from the Phoenix area (surrounding areas)
  • 9AM from Sedona area (surrounding areas)

You will head North out of the Phoenix Valley, arriving at the Grand Canyon National Park approx 12PM.  From Sedona, you’ll head up scenic Oak Creek Canyon.  Your Driver LOVES sharing interesting history along the way, allowing the time to slip away.

ARRIVAL:   During your trip, you’ll chat with your Guide about available lunch options (not included).

After lunch your exploration begins;

  • Take a walk along the edge of the Grand Canyon on the Rim Trail.
  • Checkout the Mather Point Visitor Center.
  • Explore the historic “Grand Canyon Village”.
  • Escape the crowds and add more overlook stops.

DEPARTURE:   You’ll start heading home at 4PM, arriving back in the Phoenix Valley at approx. 7:30PM. (6:30PM Sedona).

(1) FLEXIBILITY:   There’s no such thing as a “typical” tour.  There are few limitations to your opportunities to explore.

(2) ACCOMMODATING:   Families with children, seniors, group members with physical challenges, the necessity to stop frequently; no problem.

(3) LUXURY:   Premium, comfortable vehicles, period.  Our first consideration is the comfort of our Guests.

Private Charter vs Group Tour - The Advantages of going Private.

It’s going to be hard for you to not have a great time on your Private Tours.  Simply, you’re in charge.  We can change things at a moments notice, ensuring you and your group/family have an AMAZING TIME!

Mobility Scooter - $100

Available when making your reservation as an add-on.

Many of our Guests have physical challenges, which can limit their ability to take advantage of everything the Grand Canyon has to offer.  This simply wasn’t acceptable, so we set to work on a solution!  The mobility scooter to the rescue!

We want ALL of our Guests to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure .  Going on walks with the more mobily family members is an important part of the adventure.  No one should be left behind.

KEEP IN MIND:   The scooter has a max weight limit of 275 pounds.  It’s fantastic for PAVED trails at the Grand Canyon. The most popular trail, the Rim Trail, is perfect for the scooter.  HOWEVER; it will not work at Antelope Canyon , or Horseshoe Bend .

Will appear as option @ checkout

The National Park Service has announced that the Grand Canyon National Park has officially received its International Dark Sky Park certification.

Our Approach  – We adjust our pick-up time, so you leave later.

SUMMER : From the Phoenix area, Approx. 1PM pick-up (rather than 7AM), 12:30AM return.  Sedona area, 3PM (rather than 9AM), 11:30PM return.

WINTER :  From the Phoenix area, Approx. 11AM pick-up (rather than 7AM), 10:30PM return.  Sedona area, 1PM (rather than 9AM), 11:30PM return.

todds amazing tours arizona tours

While there are several places to take in the dark, glowing sky, we focus on the more remote overlooks.  Typically, they’re less crowded.

While the entire Park is “Dark Sky” certified, we’ve found that the further away from the historic village, the better.  Many of the remote overlooks don’t have a light bulb within 20 miles.  However, it’s incredible the intense glow that can emanate from a cell phone…

The remote overlooks offer seclusion, which is perfect for stargazing.

The Other Guys  – Simply, most tour companies don’t offer a tour after dark.  Also, the mixed group tours depend on “seat volume”.  Simply, filling seats.  While AMAZING, most visitors want to go during the day.

Of course your family/group isn’t restrained by these limitations.

O ur Advantage  – We tailor your helicopter tour around your ground tour,  MAXIMIZING  your experience.

Our Approach  – Todd setout to perfectly blend the ground tour with the helicopter adventure, making BOTH BETTER.

We’ve discovered that by seeing the remote overlooks FIRST (East end of the National Park), it elevates your helicopter flight to yet another level.  Now when your Pilot points out a landmark below, we’ve already seen it from the ground.

We actually modify your ground tour to heighten your helicopter tour experience.  Rather than go into the Park through the busy South entrance, we’ll swing around the East entrance.  Starting at the East entrance allows us to start with the remote overlooks, ending at the Grand Canyon airport.

The Other Guys  – The odds are someone in your mixed group isn’t doing the helicopter tour, tossing a wrench in everyone’s day.  You’ll be dropped off at the airport, while the rest go into the park.  Both groups end up waiting, wasting valuable time.

Meteor Crater is located 40 miles East of Flagstaff, Arizona and is the World’s best preserved impact crater.

How does adding Meteor Crater affect your Grand Canyon Tour?

Meteor Crater is BY FAR the largest detour of all the stops.  It adds about 1.5 hours of driving and takes about 1 hour to explore.

If you’d like to see Meteor Crater, we suggest making it your ONLY stop.  This is still give you about 2 hours at the Grand Canyon.  Plenty of time to see the best-of-the-best overlooks.

Is 2 hours enough time to see everything we want to see at the Grand Canyon?

As far as the overlooks, absolutely.

NOTE: If you’re planning on doing a hike/walk, you may not be able to see the most remote overlooks in the Park.  Most of our Guests are perfectly fine with this adjustment, since their hike/walk follows the rim of the Grand Canyon.

What you’ll see – Approx. 50,000 years ago a 150 foot iron/nickel meteor blasted a hole in the ground.  At over 2.5 miles wide and 550 feet deep, standing next to it you can’t help but marvel at its size.

Our “Deluxe Package”.

We’ve combined our award winning ground tour “Premium Package” with a private charter flight over the Grand Canyon on the way back to the Phoenix Area.  You won’t find it anywhere else.  We’ve created a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

  • Ground Tour of the Grand Canyon

Private Grand Canyon tour benefits

What is a private tour? A private tour means it's your tour. You will have your very own personal guide, with a private vehicle, exclusively for your group and nobody else.

Other than you tour guide, you are only traveling with your group. This has never been more important than it is currently. Since we don't have to stick to a strict itinerary, a private tour allows for some small modifications to a standard Grand Canyon tour.

Daily Life Travels

Road Trip from Phoenix to Grand Canyon

A road trip from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon is the perfect way to see some of the most stunning landscapes in the United States.

There’s nothing quite like hitting the open road and exploring America’s incredible landscapes. And what could be better than combining that with a visit to one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders?

A road trip from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon is the perfect way to see some of the most spectacular scenery in the country.

The drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff is a beautiful one, as you travel through red rock canyons and past pine-covered mountains. Once you reach Flagstaff, you can continue on to the Grand Canyon Village, where you’ll find visitor centers, restaurants, and hotels.

If you’re up for an adventure, consider hiking down into the canyon itself. Or if you’d prefer something a bit more relaxed, take a scenic helicopter tour or simply enjoy a leisurely walk along the rim.

The drive from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon is about 4 hours long, and there are many beautiful places to stop and take pictures along the way. I just did this trip with my family and it was really quite amazing!

We flew into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport which is right in downtown Phoenix. Then we hopped into our rental car for our road trip from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon! But, we made sure we did some sight-seeing in the Phoenix area before heading north.

The first place we stopped at was Hole in the Rock located in Papago Park. It is exactly what it sounds like – a hole in a rock. But, the cool thing is you’re able to climb up into the rock and you get a beautiful view of the park below.

The hike up to the hole is a short, easy .3 mile hike. But, this is a popular walking spot, so expect to see lots of people while you’re here. Many people like to sit and hangout in the hole for a while to enjoy the view.

Another great spot to check out in Phoenix is Tempe Beach Park. It’s a beautiful spot with lots of things to do!

You can rent electric scooters to drive around the perimeter of the lake. You can also rent paddle boats, kayaks, and paddle boards to enjoy out on the water! It’s a great place to watch the sunset.

Montezuma Castle National Monument and Well

Montezuma Castle and Well Arizona is a nice stop as you drive north from Phoenix. Both spots are a short drive off I-17.

Montezuma Castle National Monument

The castle is a national monument that was built between approximately AD 1100 and 1425. The well is about 15-20 minutes drive from the castle and is worth visiting.

Montezuma Well

The Red Rock Scenic Byway is a picturesque drive that takes you from I-17 to Route 89A in Sedona. So be sure to take the exit for Route 179 toward Sedona on your way from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon.

The route winds its way through the red rocks of Sedona, providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the scenery, including hikes, viewpoints, and photo ops.

The drive is definitely worth it if you’re looking for a beautiful Arizona road trip.

Sedona, Arizona

The Bell Rock trailhead parking lot is a worthwhile stopping point as you drive north along route 179. It’s one of the first red rock landmarks you’ll see as you enter Sedona.

Chapel of The Holy Cross

The Chapel of the Holy Cross sits elevated on the red rocks that can be seen in Sedona. This building is rated as one of the best attractions in Sedona.

But, if you’re going to visit, make sure you get there as early as possible. Parking very limited, but it’s worth the visit even if you just drive by.

Chapel of the Holy Cross

Slide Rock State Park Arizona

As you drive through Sedona, Arizona’s famous red rock country, you’ll see signs for Slide Rock State Park. The park is located in scenic Oak Creek Canyon, just north of Sedona.

Slide Rock State Park

The park features a natural water slide created by Oak Creek flowing over a smooth granite surface. The water is cold and refreshing, and the slide is a lot of fun! There’s also a swimming hole and some hiking trails.

The swimming area in Oak Creek at Slide Rock State Park

There is a fee to enter and the park does close before sunset. You’ll find the park hours and entrance fee information on the Slide Rock Park website .

Red Rock State Park

Another great park to visit as you drive through Sedona is Red Rock State Park. This beautiful state rock is a 286 acre nature preserve and environmental education center with stunning scenery.

There are various trails you can walk on your own to get views of the red rocks of the canyon and beautiful views of Oak Creek. They also offer guided nature walks daily at 10am. If you’re into birds, there are guided bird walks on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 8am.

Oak Creek going through Red Rock State Park. Swimming and wading in the creek is prohibited to help protect the habitat.

Flagstaff, Arizona is a great place to stop and see some of the natural wonders of the area. Just south of Flagstaff is Sunset Crater National Monument which is a volcano that erupted about 1000 years ago.

The lava flow from the eruption created the cone-shaped mountain that is now Sunset Crater. The monument is open year round and offers hiking trails, viewpoints, and a visitor center.

Sunset Crater

Williams Arizona

Williams, Arizona is located on Historic Route 66 and makes a perfect stop when traveling from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. The town is known for its Route 66 memorabilia and as the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon.” There are several things to see and do in Williams, including the following:

The Bearizona Wildlife Park is a family-friendly attraction that features drive-through wildlife habitats where visitors can see bears, wolves, bison and other animals up close.

Entrance to Bearizona

The Grand Canyon Railway offers train rides from Williams to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The ride takes about 2.5 hours each way and includes views of the Colorado River and the canyon walls.

The Grand Canyon Railway is a great option if you’re staying overnight in one of the resorts within the Grand Canyon Village.

Grand Canyon Train

The Williams Depot Museum tells the story of Route 66 and features exhibits on local history and culture. The Frontier Museum showcases exhibits on Western history, Native American culture and pioneer life in Arizona.

Buckskinner Park is a great little park that has a reservoir with beautiful views of mountains surrounding the park. If you have some downtime, this cute little park is definitely worth visiting.

Some things you can do at this park are hiking and fishing. The day we visited, there was a man hiking who said he saw an eagle and an osprey. This is a good spot to bird watch and see other wildlife as well!

Buckskinner Park in Williams Arizona. This park is just a short drive from Historic Route 66.

Santa Fe Reservoir is another great fishing spot in Williams, Arizona. Much like Buckskinner Park, it has beautiful views of the mountains surrounding the water. There is also a dam here that you can walk across.

Santa Fe Resevoir in Williams, Arizona

The day we went, I saw more Ospreys than I have ever seen at one time. There were at least 6 ospreys flying over the reservoir and fishing for lunch. It was really quite the experience! And, I got some great pictures too.

Osprey overlooking Santa Fe Reservoir

While I was at the reservoir, I also saw a Great Blue Heron. While I see both Ospreys and Blue Herons quite often in my home state of Connecticut, it was still really exciting to be able to see these birds in a completely different environment!

Great Blue Heron at Santa Fe Reservoir

Dogtown Lake

Dogtown Lake Campground is another great place to go visit if you have some downtime on your way to the Grand Canyon. This beautiful lake is located in the Kaibab National Forest.

Dogtown Lake in Williams, Arizona

This lake is a good spot for camping, fishing, and hiking. There is a hiking trail that takes you to a scenic overlook of the area from the top of nearby Davenport Hill. Whether you’re looking to go camping or just enjoy some tranquil time in nature, this is a great spot to visit.

Enjoying the views of the lake from a wood swing at the Dogtown Lake Campground.

Kaibab Lake

Kaibab Lake Campground is another great spot located in Williams, Arizona. This lake is a great spot for fishing, hiking, picnicking, and camping. Much like the lakes mentioned above, it is a beautiful spot where you have a nice view the mountains in the surrounding area.

Kailey posing at Kaibab Lake

Mountain drive

Bill Williams Mountain is a peak that you can actually drive up to in Williams, Arizona! The Bill Williams Mountain Road Scenic Drive is definitely worth doing if you have time!

Bill Willams Mountain

The drive to the top is best to take in late spring, summer, and in the fall when the leaves are changing. The road is closed in the winter for safety reasons. The road takes you right to the top of the mountain where you get great views of the San Francisco Peaks, the Prescott/Chino Valley, and the Grand Canyon.

If you happen to be in the area when the road is closed, you can always hike up the mountain. It is a short day hike that’s moderately difficult. Along the hike, you’ll get great views of the valley below as well as views of surrounding peaks!

Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world and for good reason. It is an amazing sight to see and there are plenty of activities available such as hiking, camping, river rafting, and more.

The South Rim

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the most popular spot for visitors, and is home to the Grand Canyon Village. The village offers lodging, food, and shopping options for visitors. There are also several trails that start from the village, including the popular Bright Angel Trail.

Bright Angel Lodge is one of the places to stay within Grand Canyon National Park.

The North Rim

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is much less crowded than the South Rim, and it offers visitors a more peaceful and secluded experience. It is also home to the only lodge inside the park, making it a perfect spot for those who want to avoid camping.

The views from the North Rim are just as stunning as those from the South Rim, but with far fewer people around, visitors can really take in all that this natural wonder has to offer.

A road trip from Phoenix to Grand Canyon is a great way to see some of the best scenery in the country. Starting in Phoenix, take I-17 north to Flagstaff. But instead of continuing on the interstate, get off the exit for highway 179 towards Sedona. Then head north on Route 89A towards Flagstaff.

There are many scenic routes to take between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon National Park, including the historic Route 66 in Williams. From Williams, just take Route 64 north to enter the National Park at the South Rim.

The North Rim is only open for a few months from spring through fall. It takes about 4.5 hours to drive from the South Rim to the North Rim. If you’d like to make the trip, you’ll take Highway 64 east to Cameron then drive north on Highway 89A west to Jacob Lake. From Jacob Lake, take Highway 67 south to the North Rim entrance.

The Grand Canyon is one of the most iconic sights in the United States, and it’s easy to see why. The canyon stretches for more than 277 miles, and visitors can explore it on foot or by car. The drive from Phoenix to the canyon is a beautiful one, with spectacular views of the desert landscape.

Vice President Kamala Harris urges Phoenix crowd to fight for reproductive rights

March 8 , 2024.

PHOENIX — Vice President Kamala Harris gave a speech about reproductive rights in Phoenix on Friday afternoon.

More than 200 pro-choice supporters chanted “Four more years” inside South Mountain Community Center.

“In states across our nation, extremists have proposed and passed laws that criminalize doctors and punish women,” Harris told the crowd. “Laws like those in Arizona that make no exception even for rape or incest.”

he event was Harris’ fifth stop on her  Fight for Reproductive Freedoms  tour, which kicked off on Jan. 22, the anniversary of  Roe v. Wade .

She said women in the U.S. have fewer rights now than they did before the Supreme Court repealed  Roe v. Wade  as the law of the land.

“The idea that someone that survives a crime of violence to their body, a violation of their body, would then be told they don’t have the authority to make a decision about what happens to their body next? That is immoral,” Harris said.

VP visits Arizona to give speech on reproductive rights

Before her speech, several Arizona leaders welcomed Harris to the Grand Canyon state.

Rep. Greg Stanton, a Democrat, traveled with her as she made her way to Phoenix.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego then welcomed Harris as she stepped off the plane.

“Extremists even attacked the freedom to use IVF treatment,” she said. “Please let us consider the irony. On the one hand, these extremists tell women they do not have the freedom to end an unwanted pregnancy, and on the other hand, these extremists tell women they don’t have the freedom to start a family.”

At that point, a heckler started yelling and interrupting the speech. Officials then removed the protestor.

Harris also shared a  livestream of her speech  on social media.

Biden administration focuses on Arizona ahead of November election

Arizona is the 13th state Harris has visited in 2024. Her Friday visit marks her fourth trip to the Grand Canyon state since being sworn in as vice president.

Her most recent trip took place in October 2023, when she visited Flagstaff as part of a tour to whip up support among young voters.

Biden’s most recent trip to Arizona took place in September. He visited Tempe to announce the creation of the McCain Library.

Harris also touched upon the Alabama Supreme Court’s recent ruling that embryos created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) are legally considered children. The decision triggered a nationwide debate over the legality of IVF treatments, which combine sperm with eggs outside of the human body.

The forecasts I’m seeing say 2 inches of snow. Not enough to create treacherous conditions or close the roads. But still plenty to slow you down and warrant extra caution.

The roads (I-17 I-40 and AZ64) are all good highways, but not to be driven in darkness. You’ll climb over 6,000 feet in 150 miles.

Read my reply. I-17 to I-40 west to AZ 64. Have you looked at a map?

Local news actually just said 6-12" of snow is possible in that area. Keep your eye on weather & roads.

Do not drive in an active snow storm, especially if snow is accumulating on the highways.
