Beat – featuring Danny Carey

  • Danny Carey
  • March 18, 2024 March 18, 2024

It looks like Danny Carey has another project happening, this time with King Crimson luminaries Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, and joined by Steve Vai. There’s not much know about this yet, except a small gig poster for one show: No word on this will be more than on show, but it takes place at Humphrey’s Concerts By The Bay in San Diego on September 17 It also appears Robert…  Read More » Beat – featuring Danny Carey

Follow up from the excellent rig rundown featuring Justin – it’s Danny‘s turn to get the treatment. David Frangioni from Modern Drummer chats with Danny Carey about his Tool touring rig from the recent 2024 US shows. Really interesting video, especially for those into drumming tech. Tool Winter 2024 Tour Wrap Up

  • March 8, 2024 March 8, 2024

About a week ago Tool finished the second leg of their North American tour, hitting up a bunch of locations they didn’t get to in 2023. They played a number of back to back shows, including a couple at the famous Madison Square Gardens. The setlist was an iteration on the last tour, with the most prominent changes being the inclusion of Flood, and the removal of Aenema. The sets…  Read More » Tool Winter 2024 Tour Wrap Up

A little while back Revolver Magazine were touting a new issue featuring Tool on the cover. I believe physical copies of this magazine are available, but for those who don’t desire phyiscal things, the article in question is now available on the Revolver website. Plenty of great Justin Chancellor interviews this month, coinciding with the Tool tour and the release of MTVoid‘s newest record. Tool Announce 2022 Tour

By Matthew Strauss

Tool

Tool have announced 2022 tour dates. The shows are set to begin in the United States in early January, with the North American run stretching into March. Tool will then play European and UK shows in April and May. Find the dates, including stops with Blonde Redhead and the Acid Helps, below.

Like many bands, Tool had plan to go on tour last year, announcing concerts in February. By June, however, the band formally canceled the tour.

“It is with great pleasure I get to announce our return to the road,” Tool drummer Danny Carey said in a statement. “These past 18 months have been trying to say the least but from great trials come great lessons and great rewards. We are genuinely looking forward to sharing them with you.”

Tool’s latest album is 2019’s Fear Inoculum .

TOOL Announces Extensive 2022 Tour

TOOL  will hit the road for an extensive tour of U.S., Europe, and the U.K. in 2022, the band announced on Monday.

The lauded hard rock outfit is set to go on tour once again beginning on January 10th at Eugene, OR’s Matthew Knight Arena . The tour will take TOOL to arenas around the U.S. throughout January, February, and March before heading to Europe and the U.K. for shows throughout late April and May. The tour will feature support from Blonde Redhead and  The Acid Helps  at select dates.

“It is with great pleasure I get to announce our return to the road,” said Danny Carey . “These past 18 months have been trying to say the least but from great trials come great lessons and great rewards. We are genuinely looking forward to sharing them with you.”

The new batch of 2022 TOOL tour dates effectively replace the band’s planned 2020 tour, which was axed as the coronavirus picture worsened. When the 2020 TOOL tour was canceled , the band noted that it would not attempt to reschedule in 2021 due to the continued uncertainty with regard to COVID-19.

The band dealt with the effects of COVID-19 on a personal level, as well. Keenan reportedly contracted the virus two separate times in 2020—first in February while on tour in support of the band’s highly anticipated new LP, Fear Inoculum , and then again later in the year. Keenan later opened up about his second COVID-19 diagnosis on a February 2021 episode  of  Apple Music ‘s ‎ The Strombo Show , during which he detailed his harrowing experience battling COVID-19 and pneumonia at once.

As Keenan noted simply in a post announcing the 2022 tour, “Let’s finish what we started. Shall we?”

Tickets for all dates go on sale this Friday, October 1st at 10:00 a.m. local time. U.K. and Irish dates will go on sale at 9 a.m. local time.

TOOL Army members can purchase pre-sale tickets for European dates on September 28th at 10 a.m. local time (24-hour pre-sale window), while U.S. pre-sale tickets are available on September 29th at 10 a.m. local time (36-hour pre-sale window). A selection of exclusive packages, which include a pre-sale ticket, will also be made available to TOOL Army members on September 29th at 10 a.m. local time.

Tool Announce Massive 54-Date Tour for 2022

Including shows in the US, UK, and Europe

Tool Announce Massive 54-Date Tour for 2022

Tool will the return to the road in 2022 for an expansive tour that includes shows across the US, UK, and Europe. Tickets are available to purchase via Ticketmaster .

All told, Tool will play 54 concerts between January and May of next year. The tour officially kicks off on January 10th in Eugene, Oregon — the location of the next show Tool had been scheduled to play before canceling their 2020 tour due to the pandemic.

It’s been a particularly rough pandemic for frontman Maynard James Keenan, who contracted COVID-19 not once but twice . The singer surmised that he likely contracted COVID the first time during the band’s February 2020 tour of Australia and New Zealand. He also revealed that he had been dealing with longterm symptoms, include lung damage. Thankfully, earlier this year, he told Heavy Consequence that “everything’s grand” when it came to his health.

For the North American leg of Tool’s tour, Blonde Redhead and The Acid Helps will split opening duties.

“It is with great pleasure I get to announce our return to the road,” said drummer Danny Carey. “These past 18 months have been trying to say the least but from great trials come great lessons and great rewards. We are genuinely looking forward to sharing them with you.”

I have been waiting for over 20 yrs for Tool to come back to Dallas and Jam out. Well that's exactly what TOOL did on 22January2020 in Dallas, TX at American Airlines Arena. From start to end nothing but excellence from all 4 Gentleman. lanyards voice was Top form and the musician's jammed do hard I know they have to have blisters on their fingers. They are a very fine tuned head banging, fist in the air rocking Rock and Roll band of the Decade. If you happen to get a chance to see TOOL within the next 4 shows, only in the states, get there. Because you dont want to miss this show. SHOW OF THE YEAR!!!!! Guaranteed!!!

Absolutely incredible show! The sound was perfect, the visuals were spectacular and the band sounded super-tight (no surprise there). That is no easy feat considering the complexity of their music (especially their new material). They're one of the very few bands that actually sound the same or better live than the studio album. Maynard is finally more visible on this tour as they've added two platforms on each side of the drum riser where he crouched, danced, slithered and delivered his exceptional vocals. He even engaged the crowd a little bit, which was shocking. You could tell he and all his band mates are in a good head space and were really enjoying themselves. Truly memorable show from one of the greatest rock bands ever!

The band was unreal as always.

I attended a Montreal show a couple of years back and this was just as good along with the addition of some new album tracks.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the crowd here. The fans were far more connected to the music in Montreal. They understood the ebb and flow.

But, for some reason, we've got fools in Toronto who show up, get trashed and are somehow louder than the band. People here don't seem to get the idea that they're there with 12 - 13 thousand other people so it's really not about them. But, hey, that's the maturity level of kids old enough to drink legally, but not self-aware...

If ever they're back again, I'll see them, but never at Scotia again.

Maynard Keenan of Tool

Tool are hitting the road this fall. The prog rockers announced the dates for a North American tour on Tuesday morning (June 6), including their first Canadian shows since 2019. The fall outing will compliment the band’s previously announced summer festival gigs with six weeks of new non-fest shows slated to kick off on Oct. 3 in Loveland, CO at the Budweiser Event Center.

Tool’s Maynard James Keenan Says Drag Outfit Had Nothing to Do With Florida Law: ‘I’m Not a…

Trending on billboard.

Singer Maynard James Keenan made news last month when he wore what appeared to be drag during a set at Daytona Beach’s Welcome to Rockville Festival, that seemed at first to be a reaction to the series of  controversial bills  signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis recently that ban minors from attending  drag  shows. But the vocalist who often wears women’s clothes and bizarre costumes on stage later said the choice was personal, not political.

“I’ve been cross-dressing since long before these clickbait-junkie dupes were out of diapers,” he told The Messenger . “And that’s really all there is to it. I’m not a political fella — had nothing to do with Florida.”

Tool Make a More than Welcome Return with A Melbourne Headline Show

It’s been close to seven years since iconic metal outfit tool performed on australian shores, and the group were sure not to let their fans down., tyler jenke, tyler jenke's most recent stories.

Tool's first performance in Melbourne since 2013 was a welcome return for the metal icons.

The last time Tool visited Australia was close to seven   years ago. Their seventh time in the country, it was difficult to find diehard fans who would complain about seeing these legends of progressive-rock on the live stage. However, their presence was undoubtedly a little bit hollow to some, with the group having visited three times since the release of their fourth album, 2006’s 10,000 Days .

Of course, much of the music news of 2019 was occupied by discussions of Tool’s latest album, with the long-awaited Fear Inoculum showing up after 13 years, a lawsuit, and questions about whether the band would actually ever release anything again.

To help cap off a year to remember for the band, November saw the outfit share the dates of their first Australian tour since 2013, with most dates promptly selling out.

With months of eager waiting soon following, Saturday evening saw Tool finally return to Melbourne, taking up residence at Rod Laver Arena for the first date of a two-night stand.

Before the Los Angeles quartet could take to the stage though, fans were treated to the industrial experience that is Author & Punisher.   Likened by some in the crowd to being a “metal DJ” of sorts, this one-man project of Tristan Shore was undoubtedly something that needed to be seen to be believed.

Between droning, atmospheric sections punctuated by pneumatic beats, howled vocals, and eclectic samples, the lengthy set often drew parallels with artists like KMFDM, Ministry, or evening Tool’s own 1996 deep cut, “Die Eier Von Satan”.

Though it was clear many in the audience were conflicted by the performance (with an obvious division between those who couldn’t quite understand it and those who couldn’t get enough), the consistent arrival of crushing sounds – akin to that of hell itself being unleashed – served as the closest thing to a perfect mood-setter that fans could hope for.

With avid excitement reaching fever pitch as time marched on, the appearance of a clear curtain around the stage signalled the return of Tool to Melbourne.

As drummer Danny Carey (whose forthcoming performance would truly see him become worthy of comparisons to an octopus) kicked off the title track of their latest record, the musical slow-burn soon reached its mesmerising peak with the vocals of frontman Maynard James Keenan forcefully cascading over the exceptional work of guitarist Adam Jones and bassist Justin Chancellor.

With the spotlight overlooking the band’s members (as is tradition), the presence of immersive visuals, frenetic lights and lasers, and accompanying music videos helped to put the tunes into context; ebbing and flowing as the blistering rhythms and melodies did the same.

Though a few surprises followed throughout the setlist (including the presence of “The Patient” and “Part of Me”), a handful of omissions clearly stood out (including the absence of “Parabol” and the recently-debuted “7empest” ), though the entire set was enough to be remembered as one of the finest collections of the band’s tracks performed on stage for some time.

Though a Tool concert is often noted for its atmospheric presentation, visual accompaniment, and (in Australia, at least) comparable rarity, the true star of the show is the collective musicianship of the band members themselves. While acute and shifting time signatures may serve as a barrier of entry to some newcomers to the band, the presence of this undoubtedly added to the rich tapestry of the evening, with extended instrumental sections highlighting the sheer talent of the rhythm section.

Even the post-intermission/encore performance of drummer Danny Carey’s “Chocolate Chip Trip” became more than just a percussive spotlight, with its outstanding technical proficiency likely inspiring a few fans to pick up the sticks and take to their nearest kit.

Closing out the night with the ubiquitous “Stinkfist”, Maynard took this as an opportunity to flex his charitable muscles, requesting security stand down so that the ban of photography and video may be lifted for this final song.

Of course, with a veritable sea of phone backlights illuminating the audience, the 1996 classic rang out across the venue, soundtracking impromptu moshpits as eager black-shirted fans wrapped up a night they’d remember forever.

For longtime fans of Tool, the group’s concerts are something akin to a religious experience. In fact, it was quite easy to find folks in the crowd who were spouting the fact that they’d managed to attend numerous stops on this latest tour; effectively putting the humble effects of casual fans to shame.

However, it’s refreshing to see a performance from a band who show little to no pretence. Sure, the band’s fans may attract similar criticism at times, though Tool themselves are a group who rely heavily on allowing their music to speak for itself; almost wholly removing the human aspect and allowing focus to rest mainly on music and visuals.

With the band’s intent to make this an immersive experience, the coupling of a lack of mobile phones throughout the crowd truly allowed for a show which could be enjoyed – dare we say – like the good old days. In fact, if anything, this concert quickly became the very example of what a gig  should be, with the outfit putting on one of the finest shows you’ll ever see, and pairing it with an experience very rarely seen in this day and age.

Though Tool have now wrapped up the first night of their long-awaited return to Melbourne, some lucky fans clearly are clearly looking towards the next night with the excitement of doing it again, undoubtedly hoping that round two might just result in the potential appearance of the elusive “7empest” . Time will tell, but for those who witnessed the band’s first night in Melbourne, it’ll be hard to compare anything to this example of musical perfection.

Five Things to Know About the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship

2024 ioa golf classic presented by lpt realty tools of a winner: jessica peng.

  • Tournament News

Ruoning Yin of China imitates a selfie as she poses with the trophy after winning the DIO Implant LA Open

If there is one word that best describes the LPGA Tour’s return to action at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, it would be, well, return. Not only does the LPGA arrive back in the United States to begin a four-month campaign of competition that will see players crisscross the country, but it also marks the reemergence of one of the game’s preeminent stars as Pak is lending her name to the Los Angeles Tour stop for the very first time, just as the best in women’s golf have all seemed to finally aligned their schedules to go head-to-head in Hollywood. Here’s a closer look at the field of 144 players vying for a piece of the $2 million purse that is up for grabs at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Pak is Back

Since Seri Pak retired from the LPGA Tour in 2016, sightings of the World Golf Hall of Fame member are few and far between. But with the addition of Pak’s name to one of the Tour’s two annual L.A. stops and her newfound role as tournament host, her sheer presence this week will provide a whole new generation of rising stars a chance to learn from and get to know one of the pioneers of women’s golf who changed the game globally. “Mentoring the next generation of golfers and giving back to the game I love is at the core of everything I do,” Pak said upon being announced as host of the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. The Korean superstar won 39 times worldwide, including 25 times on the LPGA Tour, five of which were major titles. Pak joins fellow Hall of Fame member Annika Sorenstam and major champion Michelle Wie West as the third player to currently host an LPGA Tour event.

Stars Are Out in Hollywood

A group of American stars in Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang are making their much-anticipated returns to competition at Palos Verdes Golf Club. For Korda, it’s the first time she’s competing on Tour since January when she won the second event of the season at the LPGA Drive On Championship after defeating Lydia Ko in a playoff. Korda skipped the Asian swing to take some time to travel to her family’s native home in the Czech Republic, spent some time bonding with her newborn nephew and shared social media posts fine-tuning her game. She finished tied for fifth last year in this event.

Like Korda, Thompson last competed on Tour at the LPGA Drive On Championship, where she picked up a tie for 16th result in her season-opener, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t been competing elsewhere. She teed it up on the Ladies European Tour at the Aramco Team Series – Tampa and also appeared in the made-for-TV competition, Capital One’s The Match, alongside Zhang, who is also making a return to action in Los Angeles. Zhang has been away from the Tour studying at Stanford, and this week will make her first start since picking up a tie for seventh at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in January.

And while Thompson, Korda and Zhang have taken some time away, Vu did make the trip to compete in Asia only to be sidelined by illness at the second stop in Singapore and then forced to withdraw again the following week due to injury in the People’s Republic of China. Hopefully, a healthy Vu will be ready for her return to action in L.A. where she finished tied for 11th last season.

Yin Defends

One year ago, Ruoning Yin was relatively unknown at No. 146 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, but she quickly became one of the game’s rising stars by holding off Georgia Hall for a one-stroke victory at Palos Verdes Golf Club to win for the first time on the LPGA Tour. Yin’s win came early in her career in just her 20th start, and she quickly etched her name in the history books as she became only the second player from the People’s Republic of China to win on Tour, joining Shanshan Feng. The victory became a springboard to a breakout season for Yin who went on to win her first major title at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club and spent six weeks ranked No. 1 in the world. Yin has had a quiet start to her 2024 campaign, and she will be looking to pick up her first top 10 of the season as she works to defend her title in L.A.

Long-Awaited Returns

New mothers Sophia Popov and Caroline Masson will be adjusting to life as #LPGAMoms as they make their comeback at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. Popov last competed on the LPGA Tour in August 2022 after stepping away to rehab a right shoulder injury. During her time away, the 2020 AIG Women’s Open champion revealed that she was pregnant with her first child and has been absent from competition while on maternity leave since giving birth to her daughter, Maya, in June 2023. Popov made her official return to competition two weeks ago on the LET at the Aramco Team Series – Tampa where she spoke about feeling nervous being back on the first tee, the challenges of juggling caretaking with playing and learning to take care of not just her daughter but herself. Masson, who last competed in November 2022, will be back in action this week for the first time following the birth of her son, Benton, in April 2023.

Additionally, Lizette Salas, who has been sidelined with a back injury since the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links, will enjoy a homecoming of sorts as she tees it up for the first time since July at this week’s FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. Salas grew up an hour’s drive north of Palos Verdes Golf Club in Azusa, Calif., and is quite familiar with Palos Verdes as she often practices at the club. She recorded her lowest round of the 2023 LPGA Tour season at the venue last year, recording a 64 in the second round, and went on to finish in a tie for 13th, her season-best result in 2023.

What’s Next?

The FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship kicks off a stretch of three consecutive events for the LPGA Tour in what will be a ramp-up to the first major championship of the season, The Chevron Championship. Following this week’s stop in L.A, the Tour heads to Arizona for the inaugural Ford Championship presented by KCC, and then players move on to Las Vegas for the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards, which is shifting from its prior May date on the schedule to March. Then, the Tour will enjoy a one-week break before traveling to Houston for the first major of the year.

Although the group has regularly put out reissues and remasters of classic tracks in the 2020s — see “Vocoder,” “Ballads,” “ELO 50th Anniversary Vol. 1” and “ELO 50th Anniversary Vol. 1” — their last album comprised of wholly original music was 2019’s “Out Of Nowhere.”

The ten-track record sounds sharper than it has any right to; by our estimation, Lynne’s voice still hits the Beach Boys-level high notes with ease and the tight instrumentation is just as hook-y and danceable as the group’s catchy hits from their ’70s heyday.

If you’re trepidatious of revisiting one of your favorite groups, we recommend starting with the Beatles-esque “From Out Of Nowhere,” tropical “All My Love” and hard-rockin’ “One More Time.”

Make sure to save the upbeat, call and response bop “Time Of Our Life” for last. We promise, you’ll be dancing in no time.

Haven’t heard the record yet?

ELO band members

Although Lynne and pianist-keyboardist Richard Tandy have been going strong with ELO since the early 1970s, many of the other members from way back when have since left the band.

For a closer look, here’s who you’ll see when ELO plays at a venue near you this year:

Jeff Lynne (1970–86, 2000–01, 2014–) lead/backing vocals, guitar, piano, bass, drums, keyboards Richard Tandy (1972–86, 2000–01, 2014–16, 2024-) pianos, keyboards, backing vocals, guitar, bass Milton McDonald (2014-) guitar, backing vocals Mike Stevens (2014-) guitar, backing vocals Iain Hornal (2014-) backing and lead vocals, guitar, percussion Lee Pomeroy (2014-) bass, backing vocals Marcus Byrne (2014-) keyboards, piano Donovan Hepburn (2014-) drums Melanie Lewis-McDonald (2014) backing vocals, percussion Rosie Langley (2016-) violin Amy Langley (2016-) cello Jess Cox (2016-) cello Jo Webb (2017-) keyboards, acoustic guitar, backing vocals Steve Turner (2017-) keyboards

Nvidia unveiled its Omniverse Cloud application programming interfaces (APIs), enabling a leap forward in digital twin software tools.

With industry giants like Ansys, Cadence, and Siemens on board, the APIs are set to power a new wave of digital twin applications, enhancing design, simulation, and operation processes, Nvidia announced at its Nvidia GTC 2024 event in San Jose, California today.

The launch of Omniverse Cloud APIs represents a leap for digital twin technology. By integrating core Omniverse capabilities directly into existing software applications, developers can now streamline workflows and accelerate the creation of digital twins for a wide range of industrial applications. I am moderating a panel on industrial digitilization and digital twins on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at GTC.

“We believe that everything manufactured will have digital twins,” said Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, in a keynote talk today at Nvidia GTC 2024. “Omniverse is the operating system for building and operating physically realistic digital twins. With generative AI and Omniverse, we are digitalizing the heavy industries market, opening up boundless opportunities for creators.”

GamesBeat Summit Call for Speakers

We’re thrilled to open our call for speakers to our flagship event, GamesBeat Summit 2024 hosted in Los Angeles, where we will explore the theme of “Resilience and Adaption”.

While the consumer metaverse is making slow progress, the industrial metaverse has moved into high gear. Nvidia has been investing in Omniverse for five years, using the foundation of Universal Scene Description (USD), a file format created by Pixar for universal data exchange for 3D simulations. Nvidia licenses Omniverse to enterprises for $4,500 per year. The new part of this GTC event is the Omniverse Cloud APIs.

“Omniverse is a platform for developing and deploying physically based industrial digitalization applications. It’s the feedback loop for AI to enter the physical world. Omniverse is not a tool. It’s a platform of technologies that supercharge other tools and let them connect to the world’s largest design, CAD and simulation industry ecosystems, such as Siemens, Autodesk, or Adobe,” said Rev Lebaredian, vice president of simulation at Nvidia in a press briefing and interview with GamesBeat. “Our software partners like Siemens and Ansys use Omniverse to build new tools and services. Our end and industry customers like BMW, Amazon robotics and Samsung use Omniverse to develop their own tools to connect their industrial processes.”

Both generative AI and digital twins are changing the way companies in multiple industries design, manufacture and operate their products.

Traditionally, companies have relied heavily on physical prototypes and costly modifications to complete large-scale industrial projects and build complex, connected products. That approach is expensive and error-prone, limits innovation and slows time to market, said Lebaredian.

The theory behind the digital twin is to build a factory in a digital form first, simulating everything in a realistic way so that the design can be iterated and perfected before any one has to break ground on the physical factory. Once the factory is built, the digital twin can be used to reconfigure the factory quickly. And with sensors capturing data on the factory’s operation, the designers can modify the digital twin so that the simulation is more accurate. This feedback loop can save the enterprise a lot of money.

Lebaredian pointed out that the world’s “heavy industries” are facing labor shortages, supply constraints and a difficult geopolitical landscape. That’s why they’re racing to become autonomous and software defined.

“They’re creating digital twins to design, simulate, build, operate, and optimize their assets and processes,” he said. “This helps them increase operational efficiencies, and save billions and cost. Once built, these digital twins become the birthplace of robotic systems, and virtual training grounds for AI, like the need for reinforcement learning and human feedback for training large language models. This new era of digital twins needs physics feedback to ensure that AI learned in these virtual worlds can perform in the physical world.”

Omniverse Cloud APIs

Nvidia Omniverse Cloud APIs will elevate the industrial metaverse.

The five new Omniverse Cloud APIs offer a comprehensive suite of tools for developers. They include USD Render which generates fully ray-traced renders of OpenUSD data; USD Write, which allows users to modify and interact with OpenUSD data; USD Query, which enables scene queries and interactive scenarios; USD Notify, which tracks USD changes and provides updates; and Omniverse Channel, which facilitates collaboration across scenes, connecting users, tools, and worlds.

“Omniverse Cloud APIs let developers integrate core Omniverse technologies for OpenUSD and RTX directly into their existing apps and workflows. This gives ISVs (independent software vendors) all the powers of Omniverse interoperability across tools physically based on real time rendering, and the ability to collaborate across users and devices,” Lebaredian said. “The APIs will be available on Microsoft Azure later this year, enabling developers to either sell enterprises or consumers managed services. The world’s largest industrial software companies are adopting these APIs and bringing hundreds of thousands of users. Our first partner is Siemens.”

Companies like Siemens and Ansys are already integrating Omniverse Cloud APIs into their platforms. Siemens, for example, is incorporating the APIs into its Xcelerator Platform, enhancing the capabilities of its cloud-based product lifecycle management software, Teamcenter X.

“Through the Nvidia Omniverse API, Siemens empowers customers with generative AI to make their physics-based digital twins even more immersive,” said Roland Busch, president and CEO of Siemens AG, in a statement. “This will help everybody to design, build, and test next-generation products, manufacturing processes, and factories virtually before they are built in the physical world.”

I interviewed Busch about digital twins at CES 2024 in January.

Ansys and Cadence are also leveraging Omniverse Cloud APIs to enable data interoperability and real-time visualization in their respective software solutions for autonomous vehicles and digital twin platforms.

With the demand for autonomous machines on the rise, the need for efficient end-to-end workflows has become paramount. Omniverse Cloud APIs bridge the gap between simulation tools, sensor solutions, and AI-based monitoring systems, enabling developers to accelerate the development of robots, autonomous vehicles, and AI-based monitoring systems.

“The next era of industrial digitalization has arrived,” said Andy Pratt, corporate vice president at Microsoft Emerging Technologies, in a statement. “With Nvidia Omniverse APIs on Microsoft Azure, organizations across industries and around the world can connect, collaborate, and enhance their existing tools to create the next wave of AI-enabled digital twins.”

The launch of Omniverse Cloud APIs marks a pivotal moment in the digital transformation of industries worldwide. With the power of Nvidia’s AI-driven technology, companies can unlock new levels of innovation and efficiency, transforming the way they design, simulate, build, and operate in the digital age.

The industrial software makers using Omniverse Cloud APIs include Ansys, Cadence, Dassault Systèmes for its 3DExcite brand, Hexagon, Microsoft, Rockwell Automation, Siemens and Trimble.

Focus on Nvidia and Siemens

Roland Busch is CEO of Siemens.

Siemens is one of the companies that is all-in on Omniverse and digital twins. The Siemens Xcelerator platform offers immersive visualization that enhances product lifecycle management. Siemens said it is adopting the new Nvidia APIs in its Siemens Xcelerator platform applications, starting with Teamcenter X.

Teamcenter X is Siemens’ cloud-based product lifecycle management (PLM) software. Enterprises of all sizes depend on Teamcenter software, part of the Siemens Xcelerator platform, to develop and deliver products at scale.

By connecting Nvidia Omniverse with Teamcenter X, Siemens will be able to provide engineering teams with the ability to make their physics-based digital twins more immersive and photorealistic, helping eliminate workflow waste and reduce errors.

A Sony VR example: Working with XR design is more engaging.

Through the use of Omniverse APIs, workflows such as applying materials, lighting environments and other supporting scenery assets in physically based renderings will be dramatically accelerated using generative AI.

AI integrations will also allow engineering data to be contextualized as it would appear in the real world, allowing other stakeholders — from sales and marketing teams to decision-makers and customers — to benefit from deeper insight and understanding of real-world product appearance.

By connecting Omniverse Cloud APIs to the Xcelerator platform, Siemens will enable its customers to enhance their digital twins with physically based rendering, helping supercharge industrial-scale design and manufacturing projects. With the ability to connect generative AI APIs or agents, users can effortlessly generate 3D objects or high-dynamic range image backgrounds to view their assets in context.

This means that companies like HD Hyundai, a leader in sustainable ship manufacturing, can unify and visualize complex engineering projects directly within Teamcenter X. At Nvidia GTC, Siemens and Nvidia demonstrated how HD Hyundai could use the software to visualize digital twins of liquified natural gas carriers, which can comprise over 7 million discrete parts, helping validate their product before moving to production.

Redesigning data centers

Nvidia uses Omniverse to help design digital twins for data centers.

Nvidia also unveiled a digital blueprint for building next-generation data centers using Omniverse digital twins supported by Ansys, Cadence, Patch Manager, Schneider Electric, Vertiv and more.

Nvidia said that designing, simulating and bringing up modern data centers is incredibly complex, involving multiple considerations like performance, energy efficiency and scalability. It also requires bringing together a team of highly skilled engineers across compute and network design, computer-aided design (CAD) modeling, and mechanical, electrical and thermal design. I’m assuming these are the “ sovereign AI ” data centers that Huang has been talking about.

On the show floor, Nvidia is showing a demo of a fully operational data center, designed as a digital twin in the Nvidia Omniverse. The latest design shows advanced AI supercomputers consisting of a large cluster based on an Nvidia liquid-cooled system, with two racks, 18 Grace CPUs, and 36 Nvidia Blackwell GPUs, connected by fourth-generation Nvidia NVLink switches.

To bring up new data centers as fast as possible, Nvidia first built its digital twin with software tools connected by Omniverse. Engineers unified and visualized multiple CAD datasets in full physical accuracy and photorealism in Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD) using the Cadence Reality digital twin platform, powered by Nvidia Omniverse APIs.

The new GB200 cluster is replacing an existing cluster in one of Nvidia’s legacy data centers. To start the digital build-out, technology company Kinetic Vision scanned the facility using the NavVis VLX wearable lidar scanner to produce highly accurate point cloud data and panorama photos.

tool tour dj

Then, Prevu3D software was used to remove the existing clusters and convert the point cloud to a 3D mesh. This provided a physically accurate 3D model of the facility, in which the new digital data center could be simulated.

Engineers combined and visualized multiple CAD datasets with enhanced precision and realism by using the Cadence Reality platform. The platform’s integration with Omniverse provided a powerful computing platform that enabled teams to develop OpenUSD-based 3D tools, workflows and applications.

Omniverse Cloud APIs also added interoperability with more tools, including Patch Manager and Nvidia Air. With Patch Manager, the team designed the physical layout of their cluster and networking infrastructure, ensuring that cabling lengths were accurate and routing was properly configured.

The demo showed how digital twins can allow users to fully test, optimize and validate data center designs before ever producing a physical system. By visualizing the performance of the data center in the digital twin, teams can better optimize their designs and plan for what-if scenarios.

Users can also enhance data center and cluster designs by balancing disparate sets of boundary conditions, such as cabling lengths, power, cooling and space, in an integrated manner — enabling engineers and design teams to bring clusters online much faster and with more efficiency and optimization than before.

Abortion organizations hosted at Olivia Rodrigo ‘s “Guts” tour will no longer be distributing emergency contraceptives at the singer’s concerts.

Organizers tell Variety that after widespread media attention , local abortion funds were told Thursday afternoon that they were no longer allowed to hand out free emergency birth control pills and other reproductive health resources at the concerts.

“The reality is that youth have sex, and youth need access to birth control and emergency contraception,” Hurley tells Variety over the phone. “What we’re doing is completely legal in all 50 states.”

A representative for Rodrigo did not immediately respond to Variety ‘s request for comment.

Destini Spaeth, chair of the Prairie Abortion Fund, which will have a booth at Rodrigo’s March 15 concert in St. Paul, Minn., strongly disagrees with the decision, telling Variety , “There is something really positive about a 16- or 15-year-old having a Plan B and a few condoms in her dresser to use as she needs it.”

She continues, “Sex and sexual health tools — whether that be abortion, Plan B, condoms — are villainized because you’re [seen as being] promiscuous. We don’t look at it as a sign of responsibility. … If the kids aren’t getting the education that they need in school, at least they can rely on reproductive health organizations in their communities to get that information and resources to them.”

While the organization was explicitly prohibited from distributing Plan B, lubricant and condoms at Rodrigo’s concert Friday night, Spaeth says the Prairie Abortion Fund will still be out in full force disseminating informational materials as well as hats, buttons and stickers.

The initiative received a largely positive response, but, as with anything pertaining to abortion, also provoked a swift backlash from conservative pundits. For one, Breitbart News tweeted about Rodrigo , “Curious how the Disney Channel churns out so many high priestesses of child sacrifice.”

Addressing concerns about children being exposed to sexual health resources, Right by You founder Stephanie Kraft Sheley tells Variety , “The idea that we haven’t been thoughtful or careful in carrying out our work at this event, or any event, is just incorrect.”

Sheley says speaking to young people at community events is quite common for Right by You and other abortion funds, which are “deeply familiar with our own communities and what they need in terms of information and resources.”

“Our position is that it does not hurt a young person to see us out in the community doing that work,” she adds. “None of that pearl clutching happened before our eyes at this event, and it nevers does. It was very normal to see a younger child walk up with curiosity with their parent and have the parent explain to them what’s on the table and why we’re here. … We’re not having children walk up and grab things off the table that aren’t for children.”

Hurley points out that much of the backlash against the funds is predicated on false information. “It’s disappointing that extremists are causing a moral panic over something they don’t even understand,” says Hurley. “They don’t know the difference between emergency contraception [like Plan B] and the abortion pill, which are two completely different things.”

She adds, “Extremists are purposefully conflating the two to restrict access and shame minors out of getting the resources they needs. … Their agenda is just control and power over autonomy, and they always go after young people first.”

Despite the decision, organizers praise Rodrigo for supporting abortion funds and other reproductive health organizations through her Fund 4 Good initiative — especially in states where abortion is banned or severely restricted.

“Nothing I am saying about this particular decision takes away from our intense gratitude that Olivia has given us this platform and this visibility. I think it is remarkable and needed, and I hope others will follow suit,” Sheley says.

Others are holding onto hope that Rodrigo’s team will change course.

“I love that Olivia has taken this public stance,” says Spaeth. “We just need our allies to be all in. We need them to be all in for us so that we can actually do our work. We can’t be given these parameters. We’re the experts at this.”

Funds associated with the “Guts” tour are clear that it was their decision, not Rodrigo’s, to hand out emergency contraception at her concerts.

Other organizations are finding different ways to reach the community, like the DC Abortion Fund, which tweeted ahead of Rodrigo’s July 20 concert in Washington D.C., “Little do these decision-makers know: We have no issue handing out Plan B, free of charge, on the public sidewalk outside the venue.”

Says Hurley, “We’ll keep doing our work regardless of whether we can do it in the Capital One Arena.”
