How to Get Safari Back on iPhone (iOS 17)
What to know.
- Typically, if Safari has disappeared, it most likely was just removed from the Home Screen.
- Some users are reporting that there is a glitch that appears to delete the Safari app from your iPhone altogether.
- To get it back, you must re-download the Safari app from the App Store.
Has your Safari app suddenly vanished into thin air? The good news is that you don't have the option to delete the native Safari app on your iPhone, so it has likely just been accidentally removed from your Home Screen. For this situation, we'll show you how to find the hidden app and move it back to your Home Screen. In rare cases, a software glitch can delete the app from your iPhone, so it will need to be re-installed. For either situation, let's cover how to get Safari back on your Home Screen.

If you were not able to find Safari using the solutions above, the app has likely been removed from your iPhone. Below, we'll show you how to re-download Safari from the App Store. If that fails, you may need to reset your Home Screen layout to get Safari back on your device.
Download Safari from the App Store
Here's how to re-install the Safari app on your iPhone so you can get it back on your Home Screen:
Reset Your Home Screen to Re-install Safari
If you were not able to find or re-install Safari using the steps above, this method will reset your iPhone’s Home Screen back to the factory version, which is how the Home Screen looks when setting your device up as new. Since Safari is one of the apps featured on the default Home Screen, this method will allow you to add Safari to your Home Screen.
Hopefully, the solutions above worked, and you found adding Safari to your Home Screen to be a breeze! However, if the above solutions haven't worked, there might be a deeper issue with your device. In this case, I recommend contacting Apple Support or visiting the nearest Apple store for further assistance. If you're interested, I also recommend learning how to find your lost iPhone , even if the battery has died.
- How do I get the Safari icon back on my iPhone? If your Safari app was accidentally erased, you can get the app icon back on your iPhone by redownloading the Safari app from the app store. If your Safari app was simply removed from the Home Screen but not your device, you can just add the Safari icon back to your Home Screen by using the App Library.
- Why did my Safari app disappear on my iPhone? At the moment, it is unclear why this glitch is happening to some iPhone users. However, for the most part, if your Safari icon has disappeared, you can either redownload the app from the App Store or add it to your Home Screen again via the App Library.
- Why can't I get Safari on my iPhone? Sometimes people are unable to download apps and run into many other glitches and issues if their iOS is old or out of date. It's important for security reasons and for the overall smooth running of your device to keep it as up-to-date as possible. iOS 15: How to get the iPhone's old Safari layout back
Safari's new design in iOS 15 isn't for everyone.
Apple released iOS 15 near the end of September, and the company is currently readying the next update, iOS 15.2, for release likely sometime this week. For some, there's still an annoying change in the iPhone's web browser, Safari. After updating to iOS 15 you may have noticed that the address bar is not located at the bottom of the screen.
ZDNET Recommends
The best iPhones
You can find iPhone models directly from Apple starting from $449.
The change is a jolt to your muscle memory. I know I found myself constantly reaching to the top of the iPhone's screen for the address bar, but eventually, I grew to enjoy the new layout.
It only takes a couple of seconds to make the switch. I suggest giving the new Safari a chance for a day or two before going back to the old design -- I've been using it since June and don't think I could go back to the old Safari. Nonetheless, here are the steps should you need them.
Also: iOS 15 destroyed your iPhone's battery life? Don't panic!
How to go back to the old Safari design
There are two ways to go about reverting Safari to its previous look. One is done directly in Safari; the other requires you to open the Settings app. They both do the same thing, so it's really up to you how you go about making the chance.
The first method requires you to go to Settings , then find and select Safari . Scroll down until you see get to the Tabs section. There you'll find two thumbnails of the iPhone. Tab Bar , which is the new design, is on the left. Single Tab , or the old design, is on the right. Select Single Tab .
The second method, which is much easier and quicker, is all done directly in Safari itself, but it's a little hidden.
You can move Safari's address bar back to the top of the screen with ease.
In Safari, tap on the aA icon that should be on the left side of the address bar. A menu will show up, and at the top of it will be the Show Top Address Bar option . Select it. (You can also use the same steps to reverse the change, as shown in the screenshots above.)
The new Safari isn't the only new feature in iOS 15. I have a few of them here that you need to know about , as well as some great hidden features I've found so far .
If you're going back to the old-look Safari as soon as possible, let us know why in the comments.

Safari: A Beginner’s Guide for iPhone or iPad Users
Safari can be intimidating to learn when you first start using it, but this guide will help you get used to it.
On Apple devices, the default web browser is called Safari. It shares a lot of similar features to other common browsers, like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. But if you’re new to using Safari, you may feel a little lost because the interface is slightly different to the others.
So, here’s a beginner’s guide on how to use the Safari app to browse the web on your iPhone or iPad.
How to Search for Content in the Safari App
As with all web browsers, you’ll need to first enable your iPhone’s mobile data or connect to a Wi-Fi network to access the internet.
Then, to search in Safari, simply type a term, phrase, or URL into the Smart Search bar at the bottom of the screen and tap Go on your keyboard. The Smart Search bar is a combination of the address bar and search bar. As you type, you’ll see search suggestions based on your keyword as well as results from your bookmarks and browsing history.
How to Navigate a Webpage in Safari
Once you obtain your search results, you tap on a link you’re interested in. Now let’s look at how you can navigate the webpage once it’s loaded.
How to Jump Back to the Top of Webpage
After swiping to scroll down a long article, you may want to go back up to access the website’s menu. To instantly jump back to the top of the webpage, just tap the topmost edge of your screen.
How to Go Backward (or Forward) a Webpage
After tapping on a link, perhaps the webpage isn’t quite something you’re looking for. To go back to your search results, swipe from left to right from the edge of your screen.
To go forward on a webpage, swipe from right to left instead.

How to Reveal the Safari Address Bar
Your Safari address bar is automatically hidden away when you’re scrolling down a webpage. To bring it back, tap the bottom edge of the screen that shows the website’s main URL.
How to Work With Multiple Tabs in the Safari App
Having multiple tabs opened in Safari can help you to compare information between webpages and search for new content without having to close your current webpage. Here’s how to work with multiple tabs in Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
How to Open a New Tab
To open a new tab, select the Tabs icon in the bottom-right corner, which looks like two overlapping squares. Then tap the Plus (+) to open a new tab.
How to Switch Between Tabs
Again, hit the Tabs icon. You’ll see a gallery of all your opened tabs in Safari. Select a tab to visit the webpage you want.
Since the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced a new feature in Safari: tab groups. Many of us are probably guilty of having way too many opened tabs. Therefore, organizing tabs into groups makes them more manageable. Learn more about how to use tab groups in Safari on your iPhone .
How to Open a Link in a New Background Tab
When you read long articles, you’ll likely come across a link or two within the content that sparks your interest. To avoid disrupting your reading process, you can make Safari open the link in the background, in a new tab. To do so:
- Go to the Settings app.
- Select Safari .
- Scroll down and tap Open Links .
- Choose In Background .
Next time you want to open a link, long-press it. Then, select Open in Background . When you want to visit that link, select Tabs to view all your opened tabs and choose the loaded webpage.
Saving and Sharing Webpages in Safari
The internet gives you access to a whole new world of information. Save a webpage to refer to it later, or share it with your family and friends.
How to Bookmark a Safari Webpage
To bookmark a webpage to read later, tap the Share icon in the middle of the bottom of the screen (it looks like an arrow coming out of a square) and select Add Bookmark . Type in a bookmark name.
To access your bookmarked webpage later, tap the Bookmark icon (an opened book) and browse through your bookmarks, reading list, and history to find what you’re looking for.
Besides the bookmark option, you’ll also notice that you can add a webpage to your favorites or reading list. Marking a webpage as a favorite will make it show up on your Safari home page. It’s useful if you visit the website often.
To learn more about reading lists, you can visit our guide on the differences between a bookmark and a reading list .
How to Share a Link From the Safari App
Stumble upon an interesting DIY project? A promising recipe you’d like to share with your family? You don’t have to bookmark and remind yourself to show the webpage to them later. You can share the link directly from the Safari app.
Tap the Share icon. You can then select the receiver’s name from the horizontal list of recent contacts, or choose your preferred communication app to send the Safari link to them.
Erasing Your Digital Footprint in Safari
If you’re an aspiring crime writer, having a friend notice your crime-filled search history when they peer over your shoulder is inevitably awkward. Hence, there are some things we’d prefer to keep private and erase all traces of once we exit a web browser.
Safari has a few features to help you with this.
How to Close a Tab
If you don’t close your tabs, old webpages will just auto-load again the moment you head into Safari. Having too many opened tabs affects your browsing speed as well.
Closing a tab is simple. You just need to tap the Tabs icon and then tap the Close (x) button in the corner of the tab.
How to Browse Privately in Safari
Similar to Google Chrome’s Incognito Mode, Safari has a feature called Private Browsing Mode. Your autofill information and browser history won’t be saved when you use this function. Here’s how to use it:
- First, tap the Tabs icon.
- Select the center Tabs button with an arrow next to it.
- Choose Private .
- To open a new private tab, tap the Plus (+) button.
Whenever you’re in doubt about whether you’re in Private Browsing Mode, just check the Smart Search Bar. It will be dark grey instead of white when you’re browsing privately.
How to Clear Your Safari Browsing History
If you forgot to use Private Browsing while searching for confidential information, don’t worry. You can still clear your history in Safari. Just follow these steps:
- Tap the Bookmarks icon.
- Select History (the clock icon).
- Tap Clear .
- Choose the time length from which you want Safari to clear your history.
Use the Safari App to Surf the Internet on Your iPhone
The Safari app has all the features you need for a seamless browsing experience. Once you’re familiar with these basic functions, you can check out and download Safari extensions from the App Store to enjoy more helpful features while surfing the internet on your iPhone or iPad.
How-To Geek
How to add a website to your iphone or ipad home screen.
Do you use or visit specific web apps or websites frequently? Create a Home screen shortcut on your iPad or iPhone and launch it with one tap.
Quick Links
Add a website to your iphone home screen, add a website to your ipad home screen, more about the web shortcut icon.
If you find yourself frequently visiting a website or using a web app on your iPhone or iPad, it's easy to add a shortcut icon directly on your Home screen using Safari that you can quickly tap to launch the site. Here's how.
First, open Safari and navigate to the website you'd like to put on your iPhone's Home screen. Once there, make sure you can see the navigation toolbar by tapping once near the bottom of the screen, which will make it appear.
On the navigation toolbar at the bottom of the screen, tap the Share icon (the rectangle with an upward arrow).
A Share menu will appear at the bottom of the screen. Use your finger to pull it up and swipe through the list. Tap "Add to Home Screen."
A menu titled "Add to Home Screen" will appear. Use this menu to name your new Home screen web icon anything you'd like using the onscreen keyboard. Once you're done, tap "Add" in the top-right corner of the box.
The icon for the website will appear on your Home screen . Any time you'd like to use it, just tap on the shortcut as if it were a regular app. Safari will automatically open and load the website.
On your iPad, open Safari and navigate to the website you'd like to put on your Home screen. Once there, make sure you can see the navigation toolbar by tapping once near the top of the screen, which will make it appear.
On the navigation toolbar at the top of the screen, locate the Share icon (the rectangle with an upward arrow). Tap on it.
A Share menu will appear on the right side of the screen. Tap "Add to Home Screen."
Next, a pop-up titled "Add to Home Screen" will appear where you can name your new Home screen icon anything you'd like. Once you're done, tap "Add" in the top-right corner of the box.
The icon for the website will appear on your iPad's Home screen. Any time you'd like to visit the site, just tap on the shortcut. Safari will automatically open and load it up.
The website icon we created with Safari looks and behaves like a regular app icon on the iPhone's or iPad's Home screen. You can rearrange it along with other apps, add it to a folder, or even drag it to the Dock.
You might notice that some websites have Home screen icons that seem perfectly tailored to the iPhone or iPad interface. That's because these sites specifically created an image for this purpose and defined it in their website's code . Otherwise, your iPhone or iPad will generate a tiny thumbnail of the website to use as its icon.
So far, only Safari can create shortcut icons like this. And since Apple doesn't let you change your default browser, the sites always load in Safari, as well. Still, it's a handy way to speed up your iPhone or iPad experience.
How to browse full screen on the iPhone using Safari
When the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5 went 16:9 there was a risk that, while browsing the web in landscape, the top and bottom navigation menus in Safari would not only look ridiculously long, but the screen would look far too short to be enjoyable. Luckily, Apple thought of that and included a new, full-screen mode for Safari in iOS 6 . Using full-screen, every pixel of that new, widescreen display is available to show you content and nothing but content.
Here's how it works.
- Launch the Safari app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
- Navigate to the page you'd like to view in full screen mode.
- Rotate your iPhone or iPod touch so it's in landscape mode if you haven't already.
- Tap the Full Screen button in the bottom right hand corner. (it looks like two diagonal arrows.)
- Tap the Full Screen button (now transparent) again to return to regular mode.
You can now browse to your heart's content in full screen mode until you choose to turn it off. How do you like that bigger screen now?

How to Add Safari app back to Home Screen on iPhone
Guide to put safari icon back to your iphone home screen or dock..
Just like Mail and Messages, Safari is a part of the app package that comes pre-installed on iOS and macOS. Safari is also the default browser on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Hence, you cannot Offload or delete Safari unlike a few other pre-loaded apps on iOS such as GarageBand, iMovie, Pages, and Keynote.
In case, Safari is missing from your iPhone then you might be looking to reinstall it. Well, you can’t reinstall Safari on iPhone because the app is already there on your iPhone or iPad. Moreover, you cannot update Safari from the App Store as it updates automatically when there is an iOS update.
That said if you can’t find Safari on your iOS device then you shouldn’t worry. The app is intact on your iPhone with all the settings and data including browsing data and logins. Possibly, Safari isn’t appearing just because you accidentally removed it from your home screen, moved it to an app folder, or disabled the app at some point in time.
Thankfully, you can easily add Safari back to the home screen and access it like before. Let’s find out how to restore Safari icon on iPhone running iOS 14 .

How to get Safari back on iPhone
Make use of one of the below ways to get the Safari icon back on your iPhone or iPad.
From App Library on iOS 14
- Go to the App Library and open the Utilities folder. [Refer: How to find iOS 14’s App Library ]
- Look for the Safari app.
- Press and hold an empty area on the screen until you see the jiggle mode.
- Tap the Safari app icon and drag it to one of your home screens.
- Tap ‘Done’ at the top-right corner after moving the app.
That’s it. Similarly, you can add other apps to the home screen in iOS 14 .
Using Search

If Safari is missing from the iPhone home screen, then use Spotlight Search to see if the app is there in an app folder . This method also works with iOS 13.
To do so , swipe down the screen while you are on the home screen. Type Safari in the search box at the top. You can now see the particular app folder name in case Safari is residing in a certain folder. You can then normally move Safari from that folder to the home screen or some other app folder.
Look for Safari in the App Library
If you don’t see Safari in the Utilities app group then simply search for the app in the App Library.
To do so , swipe down on the App Library page and search for Safari. To put safari back on the iPhone dock, press and hold the Safari app icon and continue holding it until you can add the app back to the home screen. Then drag and place the app in the dock.
Alternatively , you can long-tap the Safari icon in App Libray and select “Add to Home Screen”. It’s worth noting that the add to home screen option won’t appear if Safari is already there on your home screen, in an app folder, or even on one of the hidden app pages in iOS 14.

This is certainly the easiest way to restore the home screen layout and appearance on your iPhone or iPad.
NOTE : We do not suggest using this method because it will re-arrange all your apps on the home screen and remove home screen widgets as well.
To restore the default home screen layout in iOS 15 , go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone . Select Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout and then tap “Reset Home Screen” to confirm.

Unrestrict and Re-enable Safari on iPhone
Parental Controls on iOS allow users to restrict access to built-in apps. If you disable or turn off an app on your iPhone, the app is just temporarily hidden from your home screen.
In case you have disabled Safari, then you won’t be able to find it anywhere on your iPhone using the above-mentioned methods. To access the Safari browser again, you first need to enable the app. For this,
- Go to Settings > Screen Time.
- Enter passcode if asked and make sure the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions is turned on.
Safari will now appear on your home screen and you can even find it through Search.

Thank you! There were many other sites whose only solution was to reset the home screen which, apparently, reverts it to factory settings! I did not want that. Your solution to restore the (in my case) Safari icon was fast, easy, and accurate! I knew there had to be a better way! Thank you, again!

10 New Things Your iPhone Can Do in This Week's iOS 17.4 Update
Apple will this month release iOS 17.4, its biggest iPhone software update of the year so far, featuring a number of features and changes that users have been anticipating for quite a while.
1. Generate Podcast Transcripts
Apple is adding audio transcripts to the Podcasts app for iPhone, meaning you'll be able to read along to your favorite podcasts as they are spoken. If you're familiar with lyrics in Apple Music, it's very similar.
2. Protect Messages Against Quantum Attacks
Apple is bringing a new cryptographic security feature to iMessage called PQ3. This "groundbreaking" and "state-of-the-art" protocol provides "extensive defenses against even highly sophisticated quantum attacks," according to Apple.
3. Support for Next-Generation CarPlay
Next-generation CarPlay is set to launch in the U.S. later in 2024, and iOS 17.4 brings support for a slew of new apps, including climate control, tire pressure, rear-view camera feed, electric vehicle charging status, and more.
4. Siri Reads Incoming Messages in Other Languages
Previously in iOS 17, Siri's interaction with Messages was limited to one option – the ability for Siri to automatically send your dictated messages without asking you to confirm them first.
5. Stolen Device Protection Away From Home
To make it harder for a thief to access passcode-protected data on a stolen iPhone, Apple in iOS 17.3 included Stolen Device Protection. With the feature enabled, Face ID or Touch ID is required to access passwords in iCloud Keychain, Lost Mode settings, options for erasing the device, and making purchases in Safari.
6. Live Activity for Stopwatch
For some reason, Apple previously never offered Live Activity support for when you start a stopwatch in the Clock app, until now.
7. Generate Apple Cash Virtual Card Numbers
iPhone owners running iOS 17.4 will be able to generate a virtual card number for spending Apple Cash when Apple Pay isn't an online option.
8. App Support for Cloud Gaming Services
With iOS 17.4, streaming game apps will finally be allowed on the App Store worldwide, which means services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce NOW can be offered as standalone iPhone and iPad apps.
9. Set a Contactless Payment Provider
In iOS 17.4, third-party payment applications and banks can utilize the NFC chip in iPhones to enable contactless payments directly through the device in the European Economic Area, bypassing the need for Apple Pay or the Wallet app. Users in this region will have the ability to choose a primary contactless payment service, which is triggered at payment terminals or by double-pressing the iPhone's Side button.
10. Support for Alternative App Stores
App developers in the EU will be able to offer alternative app stores or install their apps through alternative stores. This means users in the EU will be able to set their preferred alternative app store as the default app store on their device, rather than Apple's own App Store. EU users will see an option for this in the Settings app.

Siri's language support is disappointing, especially for multilingual users. It struggles with reading and replying in the original language, and even after updates, many languages are still missing. This problem isn't just with Siri; it extends to other Apple services like Translate. It's surprising how OpenAI supports a wide range of languages, including ancient ones, while Apple lags behind in providing basic global language support. For those of us who speak multiple languages, using Siri with iMessage feels like a joke.

Method 1: Using the Full Screen Button
One of the most straightforward methods to go full screen on iPhone Safari is by utilizing the built-in full screen button. This feature allows you to maximize your viewing area with a single tap, providing a seamless transition into an immersive browsing experience.
To initiate full screen mode using the full screen button, follow these simple steps:
Open Safari : Launch the Safari browser on your iPhone and navigate to your desired webpage. Whether you're exploring the latest news, reading an engaging article, or browsing captivating visuals, ensure that you're on the webpage you wish to view in full screen.
Locate the Full Screen Button : Once you're on the webpage, look for the full screen button, which is represented by two diagonal arrows pointing outwards. This button is typically located in the bottom-right corner of the Safari interface, adjacent to the address bar.
Tap the Full Screen Button : With the full screen button in sight, tap it to seamlessly transition into full screen mode. As you tap the button, the Safari interface will fade away, allowing the webpage to expand and fill the entirety of your iPhone's display.
Enjoy Full Screen Browsing : Congratulations! You've successfully activated full screen mode using the full screen button. Now, you can immerse yourself in the content without any distractions, making the most of your iPhone's display real estate.
By utilizing the full screen button, you can effortlessly enhance your browsing experience, whether you're engrossed in an article, exploring captivating visuals, or simply seeking a clutter-free interface. This method offers a quick and convenient way to maximize your viewing area, allowing you to focus on the content that matters most to you.

With a single tap, you can unlock the full potential of your iPhone's display and elevate your browsing sessions to new heights.
Method 2: Using the Zoom Feature
Another effective method to achieve full screen on iPhone Safari involves leveraging the zoom feature. This approach allows you to magnify the webpage, effectively maximizing the content within the Safari browser and creating a full screen-like experience. While it may not directly activate a dedicated full screen mode, the zoom feature offers a practical alternative to enhance your viewing area and immerse yourself in the content.
To utilize the zoom feature for a full screen-like experience, follow these simple steps:
Open Safari : Begin by launching the Safari browser on your iPhone and navigating to the webpage you wish to view in a larger format. Whether you're reading an article, exploring images, or engaging with multimedia content, ensure that you're on the desired webpage.
Activate Zoom : Once you're on the webpage, use the standard pinch-to-zoom gesture on your iPhone's screen. This involves placing two fingers on the screen and either spreading them apart to zoom in or pinching them together to zoom out. By performing the pinch-to-zoom gesture, you can effectively magnify the content on the webpage, creating a full screen-like effect.
Adjust Zoom Level : After activating the zoom feature, you can adjust the zoom level to suit your preferences. Whether you prefer a slightly enlarged view or a more immersive experience, the zoom feature allows you to customize the content's size within the Safari browser.
Navigate the Zoomed Content : Once you've adjusted the zoom level, you can seamlessly navigate the zoomed content by scrolling and interacting with the webpage. Despite not activating a dedicated full screen mode, the magnified content offers an expansive and immersive viewing experience, allowing you to focus on the details without distractions.
By leveraging the zoom feature, you can effectively create a full screen-like experience within the Safari browser on your iPhone. Whether you're engrossed in textual content, exploring intricate visuals, or simply seeking a more immersive browsing experience, the zoom feature empowers you to maximize the viewing area and engage with the content in a more impactful manner.
So, the next time you wish to enhance your browsing experience on iPhone Safari, consider utilizing the zoom feature to magnify the content and create a full screen-like effect. With a simple pinch-to-zoom gesture, you can unlock a more immersive and visually engaging experience, allowing you to make the most of your iPhone's display real estate.
Method 3: Using the Reader View
When it comes to decluttering webpages and focusing solely on the core content, Safari's Reader View emerges as a powerful tool for enhancing the reading experience on your iPhone. By utilizing the Reader View feature, you can seamlessly transition into a distraction-free environment, allowing you to immerse yourself in the textual content without any visual disturbances. While not a traditional full screen mode, the Reader View offers a unique approach to maximizing the readability and focus on the essential elements of a webpage.
To leverage the Reader View for a more immersive and distraction-free browsing experience, follow these simple steps:
Open Safari : Begin by launching the Safari browser on your iPhone and navigating to the webpage containing the content you wish to explore in Reader View. Whether you're delving into an article, perusing a blog post, or engaging with textual content, ensure that you're on the webpage that aligns with your reading interests.
Activate Reader View : Once you're on the desired webpage, look for the Reader View icon located in the address bar. This icon typically resembles a series of stacked lines, symbolizing the consolidation of content for a streamlined reading experience. Tap the Reader View icon to activate this feature.
Enter Distraction-Free Mode : Upon tapping the Reader View icon, Safari will seamlessly transition into a distraction-free environment, presenting the textual content in a clean and easily readable format. The extraneous elements of the webpage, such as advertisements, navigation menus, and visual clutter, will be suppressed, allowing you to focus solely on the core text.
Customize Reading Preferences : Within the Reader View, you have the flexibility to customize your reading preferences. This includes adjusting the text size, choosing a preferred font, and altering the background color to optimize readability based on your personal preferences.
Immerse Yourself in the Content : With the distractions minimized and the textual content presented in a clean and organized layout, you can now immerse yourself in the material without any visual disturbances. Whether you're absorbing informative articles, exploring in-depth analyses, or delving into captivating narratives, the Reader View empowers you to engage with the content in a focused and immersive manner.
By utilizing the Reader View feature, you can effectively create a distraction-free and immersive reading environment within the Safari browser on your iPhone. While it may not activate a traditional full screen mode, the Reader View offers a unique approach to enhancing the readability and focus on textual content, ensuring that you can delve into the material without any visual distractions.
So, the next time you're seeking a more immersive and focused reading experience on iPhone Safari, consider utilizing the Reader View to declutter webpages and immerse yourself in the textual content. With a simple tap, you can unlock a distraction-free reading environment, allowing you to engage with the material in a more impactful and focused manner.
In conclusion, the ability to go full screen on iPhone Safari opens up a world of immersive and visually engaging browsing experiences. By exploring the three methods outlined in this article, users can seamlessly transition into a clutter-free and expansive viewing environment, allowing them to focus on the content that matters most to them.

Privacy is built in.
Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.
Intelligent Tracking Prevention
Safari stops trackers in their tracks.
What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.
Privacy Report
Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.
Customization
Putting the you in url..
Safari is more customizable than ever. Organize your tabs into Tab Groups so it’s easy to go from one interest to the next. Set a custom background image and fine-tune your browser window with your favorite features — like Reading List, Favorites, iCloud Tabs, and Siri Suggestions. And third-party extensions for iPhone, iPad, and Mac let you do even more with Safari, so you can browse the way you want across all your devices.
Safari Profiles allow you to separate your history, extensions, Tab Groups, favorites, cookies, and more. Quickly switch between profiles for topics you create, like Personal and Work.
Web apps let you save your favorite websites to the Dock on Mac and to the Home Screen on iPhone and iPad. A simplified toolbar and separate settings give you an app-like experience.
Safari Extensions add functionality to your browser to help you explore the web the way you want. Find and add your favorite extensions in the dedicated Safari category on the App Store.
Save and organize your tabs in the way that works best for you. Name your Tab Groups, edit them, and switch among them across devices. You can also share Tab Groups — making planning your next family trip or group project easier and more collaborative.
Smart Tools
Designed to help your work flow..
Built-in tools create a browsing experience that’s far more immersive, intuitive, and immediate. Get detailed information about a subject in a photo with just a click, select text within any image, instantly translate an entire web page, and quickly take notes wherever you are on a site — without having to switch apps.
Notes is your go-to app to capture any thought. And with the Quick Note feature, you can instantly jot down ideas as you browse websites without having to leave Safari.
Translation
Translate entire web pages with a single click. You can also get translations for text in images and paused video without leaving Safari.
Interact with text in any image or paused video on the web using functions like copy and paste, translate, and lookup. 6
Visual Look Up
Quickly learn more about landmarks, works of art, breeds of dogs, and more with only a photo or an image you find online. And easily lift the subject of an image from Safari, remove its background, and paste it into Messages, Notes, or other apps.
Surf safe and sound.
Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.
Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.
Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.
Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.
Learn more about Apple Pay
With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.
Same Safari. Different device.
Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.
When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.
Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.
iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.
Designed for developers.
Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimizations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.
Make Safari your default browser
Customize your start page, view your browsing privacy report, monitor your saved passwords, use apple pay in safari, view your tabs across all your devices, read the safari user guide, get safari support.
Rotate the screen on your iPhone or iPod touch
The screen on your iPhone and iPod touch can rotate so that you can see apps in portrait or landscape mode. Learn how to rotate the screen on your iPhone or iPod touch, or get help if the feature doesn't work.

I have seen users describe Safari as being "grey" but black is a first for me ....
Quit Safari. From the home screen - Double tap the home button and find the Safari icon in the task bar. Tap and hold down on the icon until it wiggles, then tap the red minus sign. Tap the screen above the task bar. Try Safari again.
Or do you mean that the app border is black in color now? That indicates that private browsing is turned on. settings>Safari>Private Browsing>On. If you turn it off, Safari will be the regular grey color again.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History) - it's 'Clear Cookies and Data' on iOS 5
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Apple says iOS 17.4 won’t remove Home Screen web apps in the EU after all
Last month, Apple confirmed that iOS 17.4 would remove support for Home Screen web apps in the European Union. At the time, Apple said this decision was due to requirements under the Digital Markets Act related to support for alternative browser engines on iPhone.
Apple is now walking back that decision and says it will “continue to offer the existing Home Screen web apps capability in the EU.”
Home Screen web apps are here to stay
Apple’s decision to remove Home Screen web apps, also known as progressive web apps or PWAs, faced a lot of criticism. The Open Web Advocacy organization, for example, said “entire categories of apps will no longer be viable on the web as a result” of the change. There were also reports the EU was going to investigate the decision .
At the time, Apple explained that it would have to build an “entirely new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS” to address the “complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps using alternative browser engines.” This, the company said, “was not practical to undertake given the other demands of the DMA and the very low user adoption of Home Screen web apps.”
With today’s announcement, Apple has reversed course and said that Home Screen web apps will continue to exist as they did pre-iOS 17.4 in the European Union. “This support means Home Screen web apps continue to be built directly on WebKit and its security architecture, and align with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS,” Apple explains today.
This means that all Home Screen web apps will still be powered by WebKit, regardless of whether the web app is added using Safari or not – exactly as it works today and has for years.
Here is Apple’s full statement:
Previously, Apple announced plans to remove the Home Screen web apps capability in the EU as part of our efforts to comply with the DMA. The need to remove the capability was informed by the complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps to support alternative browser engines that would require building a new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS. We have received requests to continue to offer support for Home Screen web apps in iOS, therefore we will continue to offer the existing Home Screen web apps capability in the EU. This support means Home Screen web apps continue to be built directly on WebKit and its security architecture, and align with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS. Developers and users who may have been impacted by the removal of Home Screen web apps in the beta release of iOS in the EU can expect the return of the existing functionality for Home Screen web apps with the availability of iOS 17.4 in early March.
Apple is adding this update to its Developer website on Friday , while also keeping the initial explanation there out of full transparency.
9to5Mac’s Take
Top comment by natan facchin.
As me and many people stated: it is possible, Apple is just kicking and screaming because of the regulations, which although usually I don't like, in this case are good. And so is this decision.
MacOS supports it, as it does running any software from anywhere, including root and it's very secure.
To me, this is an example of the vagueness of the Digital Markets Act. Reading between the lines, it sounds like Apple thought it couldn’t offer WebKit-powered Home Screen apps in the European Union because of the DMA’s guidelines on browser equality.
Apple clearly interpreted the guidelines as meaning it had to offer PWA support for alternative browser engines in order to keep offering the feature for Safari and WebKit.
In the two weeks since the initial announcement, and the associated pushback, Apple came to the realization – one way or another – that it was mistaken. Whatever the backstory is, I’m glad Apple listened to the feedback and reversed course on this one.

Europe has questions —
Apple under fire for disabling iphone web apps—eu asks developers to weigh in, eu sent queries to apple and app developers as apple kills home screen web apps..
Jon Brodkin - Feb 27, 2024 5:41 pm UTC
European Commission officials are probing Apple's decision to remove home screen web apps from iPhones and iPads in Europe. The EC confirmed it is seeking information from Apple and app developers who would be affected by the change, kicking off a process that could lead to a formal investigation.
"We are indeed looking at the compliance packages of all gatekeepers, including Apple," a European Commission spokesperson told Ars. "In that context, we're in particular looking into the issue of Progressive Web Apps, and can confirm sending the requests for information to Apple and to app developers, who can provide useful information for our assessment."
Apple is removing the ability to install home screen web apps in Europe when iOS 17.4 is released, claiming it is too hard to keep offering the feature under the European Union's new Digital Markets Act (DMA).
A Financial Times report yesterday said that Europe's "competition regulators sent questions to developers last week seeking to determine the impact of Apple's decision to disable so-called 'progressive web apps' in the EU, in a move seen as a precursor towards an in-depth probe."
"EU officials said formal proceedings could be prevented if Apple made further concessions," the FT wrote.
March 6 compliance deadline
Apple and other companies are required to comply with the DMA by March 6. European officials will evaluate whether Apple's compliance plan meets the requirements. "The DMA team is ready to act if and when needed following expiration of compliance deadline," the EC spokesperson said.
The DMA provides for fines of up to 10 percent of a "company's total worldwide annual turnover" and up to 20 percent for repeat infringements.
After the iOS 17.4 changes, it will still be possible to add website bookmarks to iPhone and iPad home screens. But those bookmarks would take the user to the web browser instead of a separate web app.
The Digital Markets Act targets " gatekeepers " of certain technologies such as operating systems, browsers, and search engines. It requires gatekeepers to let third parties interoperate with the gatekeepers' own services and prohibits them from favoring their own services at the expense of competitors.
Group slams Apple’s “attack on open web”
Open Web Advocacy, which describes itself as "a not-for-profit organization made up of a loose group of software engineers from all over the world," called Apple's decision "a direct attack on the open web, its users, and its developers."
"This is emphatically not required by the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). It's a circumvention of both the spirit and the letter of the Act, and if the EU allows it, then the DMA will have failed in its aim to allow fair and effective browser and web app competition," the group said .
Open Web Advocacy said that Apple's move seems designed to prevent web apps from becoming a viable competitor to the App Store model in which developers pay Apple commissions of up to 30 percent. "It's telling that this is the feature that Apple refused to share. And it makes sense: the idea that users could install safe and secure apps that Apple can't tax, block, or control is terrifying to them," the group said.
The group is also gathering signatures for an open letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook. "Apple's justifications gesture toward security and privacy, but are at best unfounded," the letter said. "Web Apps provide safe computing that puts users in control through their browsers, and iOS opening up to competing browser engines will enhance, rather than erode, security and privacy."
Apple cited “complex security” concerns
Apple claims in a developer Q&A that it would be too hard to guarantee the security of home screen web apps in alternative browser engines. Apple is removing the ability to install these web apps with Safari, meaning they won't be available through either Apple's browser engine or alternative engines.
"Addressing the complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps using alternative browser engines would require building an entirely new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS and was not practical to undertake given the other demands of the DMA and the very low user adoption of Home Screen web apps. And so, to comply with the DMA's requirements, we had to remove the Home Screen web apps feature in the EU," Apple said.
According to the Financial Times, Apple declined to comment on the EU probe but pointed to an earlier statement that said, "We expect this change to affect a small number of users. Still, we regret any impact this change—that was made as part of the work to comply with the DMA—may have on developers of Home Screen web apps and our users."
We contacted Apple today and will update this article if it provides any further comment.
