The game takes place in the parallel universes of magic-dominated Arcadia and industrial Stark. The protagonist, April Ryan , is an 18-year-old art student living in Stark, identified as a 'Shifter' capable of movement between these worlds, and tasked with restoring their essential Balance.

the longest journey scummvm

The story begins in Stark, where a sleeping April unintentionally shifts to Arcadia and meets the 'White Dragon', who identifies her as the heroine of the coming story. Upon learning this, April is attacked by a dark 'Chaos Vortex' and awakens in Stark, where she dismisses her experience as a nightmare. The character 'Cortez' later surprises her by revealing his knowledge.

When surreal activity begins affecting her friends, April meets again with Cortez, who transports her to the Arcadian city Marcuria. There she meets Tobias Grensret, Vestrum of the Sentinel; learns Alltongue, the common language in Arcadia; and hears from Tobias that the Balance protecting both worlds is dissolving after the dereliction of its Guardian, and must be restored by the appearance of another.

To return to Stark, April visits Brian Westhouse, a friend of Cortez, who assists her return; Cortez then tells her of the organization known as the Vanguard or Church of Voltec. The next day, April consults Warren Hughes, a homeless boy who agrees to help April if she erases his criminal record and locates his missing sister, in doing which April finds a data cube on the Church of Voltec. Hughes then refers her to a hacker named Burns Flipper, who reveals that the wealthy magnate Jacob McAllen is head of the Vanguard, assisted by Gordon Halloway, a former candidate for Guardianship divided by the Vanguard into Chaos (in Arcadia) and Logic (in Stark), and gives her a false identification by which to infiltrate the Vanguard through its front company MTI.

Meeting Cortez and Father Raul in a Catholic cathedral, April is told that Arcadia is on the brink of war. Later in Arcadia, April meets the innkeeper, Benrime Salmin, and the clairvoyant Abnaxus, ambassador of the Venar, who identifies the coming danger. In the morning, April learns of four magical species, each of whom has prophecies of a savior who will restore the Balance, only to finally break it – and determines to visit one such species, the winged Alatian of the island Alais, having gained sea-travel by rescuing a talking bird that she names Crow. Before departing, she learns that she must defeat an alchemist named Roper Klacks, in order to free the ships' wind that he holds captive.

At Roper Klacks' Tower, April challenges Klacks to use his magic against her calculator, and wins. Immediately before her departure to Alais, Tobias gives April the Talisman representing the Balance. En route , April kills the monster known as 'Gribbler' while rescuing one of her captive Banda, whose species later give her the name 'April Bandu-embata' as a mark of gratitude and grant her part of the disc necessary to restore the Balance.

On the voyage to Alais, a 'Chaos Storm' attacks the ship, and April sabotages the ship's compass to restore its course. When the ship's captain seizes her Talisman, April attempts to retrieve it, and in so doing sinks the ship, whereupon the crew abandon her on a raft . She is taken prisoner by the Maerum, a Mermaid -like species related to the Alatian, but currently their enemies. In revealing their common ancestry, April fulfills a prophecy of the 'Waterstiller', a foretold savior of the Maerum.

After fulfilling the second prophecy by killing a 'Snapjaw', she is conveyed to fulfill the third by re-uniting the Maerum with the Alatians. After a series of tasks and in meeting with the Alatians' leader, April fulfills their prophecy by flying without wings, and convinces the Alatian to make peace with the Maerum.

In a coastal sea cave, the Teller's guard and the Maerum Queen bring stones which combine to form the second part of the Balance's disc; whereupon the Maerum convey April, at her own request, to the Blue Dragon, who gives April one of the disc's Jewels and takes her to a ship inhabited by the Dark People, who give April the third piece of the disc, and an astral map locating the Guardian's Realm.

At the Marcurian Harbor, April is attacked by the Chaos and returns to the Cathedral in Stark. There, Father Raul reveals that he is also a Sentinel Minstrum of Stark, and that Cortez is missing. On returning to her lodgings, April is caught by Gordon Halloway. She is rescued by another character, Lady Alvane, who teaches April to shift at will, and sends April to Abnaxus to receive the disc's final piece. April then returns to the White Dragon, who reveals herself as April's mother and dies, and a new White Dragon emerges from her egg.

Returned to Stark, April gives Flipper the star map to decipher, infiltrates MTI, and is captured by antagonist McAllen. Unable to escape, she surrenders her two jewels and the disc, and is then imprisoned. Upon escaping in pursuit of her object, she is trapped again; but rescued by Cortez. McAllen then reveals that he and Cortez are two Dragons (called 'Draic Kin', in-universe) meant to protect Stark, but at odds after McAllen's decision to re-unite the two worlds despite the risk of Chaos. The two then appear to die in combat. Retrieving the disc and the four jewels, April returns to Flipper, whom she finds dying after the seizure of her deciphered map by Gordon Halloway, and gains a copy from him, which she uses to locate the Guardian's Realm near the space station 'Morning Star'.

At the station, April frees Adrian, the derelict Guardian, and escapes with Halloway in pursuit. On her way to the Guardians' Tower, she imprisons the Chaos Vortex in her Talisman and later summons Crow, who helps her complete the necessary trials. Inside the tower, April re-unites Halloway with the Chaos Vortex to restore his candidacy as Guardian and returns to Stark and Arcadia.

In the Epilogue, the scene returns to Lady Alvane's home, where she has narrated the entire story to two youths, and where she reveals that the two worlds re-united under Gordon Halloway. Upon their departure, an aged and graying Crow enters, asking the tale of the " warrior princess " who won the war of the Balance, and she corrects his impression; a possible reference to the sequel, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey .

ScummVM celebrates 20th birthday with The Longest Journey support

As well as Myst 3, Grim Fandango, and Crusader: No Remorse

ScummVM celebrated its 20th birthday on Saturday, two decades of making old games easier to run on modern systems. The project started focused on LucasArts adventure games built in the SCUMM game engine and the first release only supported Monkey Island 2, and it has since grown to support over 300 games across other genres too. To celebrate that big birthday, a new update hit adding support for more game engines and many more games, including The Longest Journey , Grim Fandango , and Crusader: No Remorse.

Cover image for YouTube video

ScummVM 2.5.0 is the first version to support '2.5D' games, the announcement explains, thanks to a merger with fellow vintage video game platform ResidualVM. So say hello to support for Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey, and Myst 3: Exile. (Yeah, Grim Fandango has an official remaster these days, but maybe you want the original too?)

It adds support for more games too, including Crusader: No Remorse and Little Big Adventure. And it now supports interactive fiction games made in Glulx as well as games made in Adventure Game Studio version 2.5 or higher. That's squillions more games right there.

Blowing up machinery in a Crusader: No Remorse screenshot.

Also new: better support for Retina displays; "a major rewrite" for the Nintendo DS version; Korean and Japanese translations for the ScummVM GUI; and more. See the patch notes for everything and download over here .

ScummVM isn't an emulator, it doesn't recreate the operating system games originally ran in. It replaces whole game engines with its own new compatible versions. So sure, it makes them play nicely with modern processer speeds and screen resolutions and such, but ScummVM also adds new features like cloud support, and isn't just limited to PC, bringing many games to iPhone and Android and Nintendo Switch and... lots of things. It's good.

Projects like ScummVM played a huge part in keeping interest in adventure games alive after big developers wandered off into other genres. As well as sustaining hoary veterans, they preserved history and made it possible for new generations to experience these games without a huge amount of faff. This ongoing interest is probably also part of why we've seen a lot of adventure game remasters and remakes. ScummVM has also paved the way for long-unavailable games to return to stores; GOG started selling Blade Runner after ScummVM added support, for example. Thanks to all the ScummVM devs over the years!

Building latest ScummVM with "The Longest Journey" Playable

Lolonois

Update February 2022 : As with latest changes in ScummVM and provided binaries of ScummVM (2.6.0-git) in RetroPie it is no longer needed to to the below limbo. TLJ can be played on a Rpi3 with the software renderer enabled. See also here for a related discussion: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/32216/myst-iii-don-t-running-well-on-pi3b

--- snip ---

I was puzzled about the note in another thread it was communicated that The Longest Journey (TLJ) is not startable with the latest scummvm. As there is/was no "outcry" of scummvm users on other platforms that the TLJ is not playable, I strongly assumed the cause is related to how scummvm is build on retropie and no regression in scummvm itself.

It turned out that with some changes to the configure build flags TLJ does run well. :-)

Currently the below changes are only verified to be working on a Rpi4 (Retropie 4.7.11) with scummvm master .

The reason why I do table it here is to ask what is needed to make it also run on a Rpi3 (e.g. with the renderer opengl_shaders as the residualvm build does?) and who wants to volunteer to test it on Rpi3? (I guess on any other smaller HW than a Rpi3 it is not feasible to run TLJ at all.)

So, these are the changes to the scriptmodule to make TLJ run like charm on a Rpi4 (note that also the --host=raspberry is removed):

If you want to reduce compile time add to the params these switches --disable-all-engines --enable-engine=stark .

If you encounter the output during configure like:

you can stop the build rightaway: TLJ will not run, scummvm will terminate with " No renderers have been found for this game "

@Lolonois Thanks for your efforts here. I finally had a chance to try it out. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work.

I really think the issue is specific to the Pi 3. I also have a Pi 4 set up with RetroPie, and Longest Journey works great on that device with the final ResidualVM release. So, I guess I would expect it to work out of the box, so to speak, in ScummVM.

I have tons of ScummVM games, so I did the whole lengthy build here. Made sure I didn't see the warnings you called out. Good news is the build change doesn't seem to break any other games. I only had time to try a few, but Grim Fandango still runs as does Blade Runner and PQ1 VGA.

The runncommand.log for TLJ still gives the same error as before:

@plimbs and all. I had succcess. I resinstalled a RPI3 with the latest RetroPie image on it. It turned out that vc4-fkms-v3d has to be enabled in the boot config:

Open /boot/config.txt and scroll all down. Then remove the # before dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3 to enable it, safe file, reboot:

It should not be needed to recompile scummvm. I built it with

--opengl-mode=gles2 --force-opengl-game-es2

but I assume

--opengl-mode=auto --force-opengl-game-es2

will also work. Maybe you can confirm which configure switches worked for you @plimbs .

Here is my ScummVM start output:

... and then the magic starts :)

TLJ starts and runs smooth in the cutscenes and in the game (just started a game and walked around and examined the scenery a bit).

Epilog: You may note that emulationsstation won't start any more ("greets" you with the (infamous) "already in use?" question (can't recall the exact message from my memory), but this can be easily remediated:

Other things I did, but I assume they are unrelated:

  • Did update to latest RetroPie-Setup Script
  • Did update all Raspian Packages
  • Installed libglew headers for ./configure of scummvm: apt-get install libglew-dev

PS : However, I installed a minimal RetroPie (ES and ScummVM). I did not test other emulators. I can not tell what possible knock-on effects the vc4-fkms-v3d enabling may have.

Maybe someone of the community can chime in why vc4-fkms-v3d is initially disabled at RetroPie?

@lolonois I am really sorry. I finally got back to playing with the Pi today. I was all set to try out your hard work here. I thought I should begin with an updated ScummVM release, so I did that first. Lo and behold, TLJ works! I was able to boot and play the prologue scene.

I definitely appreciate your help, though!

April Ryan is a struggling student artist in the year 2209, recently arrived in the big city of Newport. Lately she has been seeing strange, life-like dreams. Somewhere in the mountains, a mysterious white dragon talks to April, calling her the "mother of the future". When April wakes up, she dismisses the vision as a nightmare. However, an old enigmatic man named Cortez, whom April has spotted near her house before, unexpectedly tells her that she must face the reality in her dreams. Soon April learns that our reality is but one facet of a universe that consists of two parallel worlds: Stark, the world of science and technology, and Arcadia, the world of magic. Though raised in Stark, April possesses the ability of shifting between the two worlds, and must restore the balance in both of them before it is too late.

The Longest Journey is a third-person puzzle-solving adventure game. The player navigates April over pre-rendered backgrounds with fixed camera angles, interacting with people and objects through a simple point-and-click interface. The gameplay follows the traditional template introduced in LucasArts adventures, relying mostly on inventory-based puzzles and multiple-choice dialogues to advance the story. To help keep track of things, the game includes a diary, where April records her thoughts about important events, and a conversation log that records the text of every conversation.

ScummVM version 2.5.0 released, supports Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey, Little Big Adventure, and AGS games

Haven't seen a thread about this so I figured I'd make one: ScummVM , one of the coolest open source projects of all time just got it's 20 year anniversary update which folds in a lot of development threads that have been works in progress for years. The biggest is incorporating ResidualVM , the 3D game only side project fully into ScummVM, adding support for it's 4 games: Grim Fandango, Escape From Monkey Island, Myst 3, and The Longest Journey (plus the ResidualVM exclusive The Longest Journey AI upscaling mod ), as well as support for the Adventure Game Studio engine, which powers pretty much all recent indie point and click games such as The Blackwell series, Gemini Rue, Kathy Rain, and a couple hundred/thousand other games . This is on top of the last major update which folds in nearly every text adventure engine support (this adds yet another engine, Glulxe). Oh and they support a few RPGS such as a few Ultima games, and some of the early Might and Magic games. What I find so cool about ScummVM is its not an emulator, each game supported by it has to be implemented by hand by a dedicated team of volunteer programmers who reverse engineer the whole game engine from scratch. Each game is running natively, updated to run on any modern operating system, as well as more obscure ones such as a full port for the Dreamcast, Vita, and DS . I personally just buy/download whatever supported games from Steam/GOG/etc, pull the files I need into a central ScummVM folder, and point ScummVM at that. With this new update, I can run the earliest text adventure game, Colossal Cave Adventure (1977) and a new release AGS game (Strangeland, 2021) as well as nearly every game important to game and adventure game history in between. Their auto tagging system for games often finds alternate versions of games included in GOG/Steam downloads and can add those for you, and certain games have mods, like the Monkey Island 1 and 2 Talkie Editions , (and for Monkey 1 the further mod of adding in Monkey Island 3 style music ). If you're willing to poke around you can set up their MT-32 emulation, add midi soundfonts, or fan made midi-rerecordings to get the best possible version of each game. The amount of work this piece of software has gotten, entirely volunteer and free is mindboggling, and I wanna shout out this 20th anniversary update as I'm certain there's people who haven't heard of it before. Ninja edit: they've also worked with some developers to put out select games as freeware, with the files on their site, you can get 11 games for free here , as well as extra files to add support for features on games that aren't free, like versions of the Broken Sword series cutscenes for older versions, or the subtitle files for Blade Runner.

ScummVM continues to be one of the best things people have invented. It's just a wonderful piece of software.

I think I started using this about 17 years ago, when it was just a few Lucasarts/Adventuresoft/Revolution games supported? Before then I was vainly trying to get things working with VDMSound after windows 2000 lol (which to be fair got quite a few games working that otherwise would not start on 2000 or later XP). The number of games & engines they've reversed engineered since then is pretty mindboggling. Many thanks to the devs who've worked on it over the years. I've been able to introduce so many people to P&C games who might not have ever bothered if it meant fiddling around with Dosbox or PCEM (which I don't mind personally, but are nowhere near as simple as scummvm).

Little Big Adventure? Wow that's cool.

PurpleMoustache said: What's even crazier is one of the first two devs (the project started when two different people both realized they were working on porting Monkey Island 2, and decided to join forces) later made uTorrent and founded Spotify. I haven't personally used it as you either have to Jailbreak or have a Mac and pay $100 a year for the Apple Dev access, but they have a Discord that has a live feed of their github commits and someone is dedicated to making that iOS version good, so presumably it would be on par. I think however, all non-desktop/laptop computer ports don't have access for 3D/2.5d (Blade Runner, etc) games at the moment. Click to expand... Click to shrink...

Current status in ScummVM

The ResidualVM Stark engine is being merged into ScummVM.

In the latest daily builds of ResidualVM, The Longest Journey was completable.

Installation

Required data files.

For more information on how ScummVM uses game data files, see the user documentation .

Copy the data files from your The Longest Journey CDs, DVD or digital distribution into one directory:

  • The 1a — 79 directories (only 4f for demo version).
  • The global directory.
  • The static directory.
  • The fonts directory (not critical, but recommended – see below).
  • x.xarc and all the INI files.
  • game.exe (not critical, but recommended for a styled message dialog)

The 2-CD and DVD versions have some of the data files packed in installer archives. Unpack the archives.

Mixing files from different versions of the game is not supported.

Steam Version

The Steam version and the demo from Steam are missing the fonts directory. The required fonts can be copied over from the demo version , or from the GOG or retail version.

Gamesplanet Version

This release contains the following files among others:

You need to use innoextract from https://constexpr.org/innoextract/ (available in Homebrew on macOS and in many Linux distributions) and extract the distribution with the following command:

Then follow the instructions for the normal CD release.

German 4-CD Version

The German 4-CD version includes a copy protection scheme which prohibits normal copying of the files (the TOC is modified to create artificially big files so copying fails).

There are two impossibly large files on each CD in the \Global\xarc directory. The following files must be left out when copying them from the CDs:

All other instructions apply as mentioned in "Required data files".

Alternative method

It is possible to run the Setup.exe file even in modern Windows versions (tested on Windows 11). The warning about the game not working under Windows NT can be safely ignored.

In the installer make sure to choose "Maximum" when asked for install size. The installer will copy all required files to the installation directory which can then be used with ScummVM.

If you don't use Windows, it might be possible to use a compatibility layer like Wine (open source) on Linux or Crossover (commercial, free trial available) on macOS or Linux to run the installer, but this is untested. Alternatively, a Windows install (Windows 95 or later) in a VM should work too.

Only use this method this if the normal instructions fail. This was only tested with the German 4-CD version (for which these instructions apply) and it is likely that other language version's installer won't copy all necessary files. This may also copy over files that are not needed by ScummVM so it might take up more space than copying the necessary files manually.

The mouse is used to interact with objects and menu elements.

ScummVM can load replacement assets instead of the original files for some of the asset types. By leveraging this capability, users can create mods for the game. These are the currently supported modding features:

  • Load mods from the mods directory inside the game data path. Each mod should be in its own directory in the mods subdirectory. Mods are loaded in alphabetical order.
  • Load external PNG files instead of the XMG files inside the game archives. The replacement PNG files can have larger dimensions when compared to the original XMG images, enabling the creation of a high resolution mod. The game looks for the replacement files in a mod directory and then in the xarc subdirectory of the directory containing the archive in which the XMG picture to be replaced is located. For instance: mods/[my_mod]/1e/00/xarc/fountain_layercenter.png needs to be used for the Venice park background. ScummVM expects PNGs to be in pre-multiplied alpha format for improved load times. However the replacement_png_premultiply_alpha scummvm.ini setting allows to load regular transparency PNGs when set to true for convenience when testing.
  • Load replacement video files for the Smacker animations. The replacement files can be either in Smacker or Bink encoding. With Smacker, only 1-bit transparency can be used. Transparent pixels must have the Cyan color (#00FFFF). When using Bink, 8-bit transparency can be used. The alpha channel should be encoded in the pre-multiplied alpha format. The replacement videos can have larger dimensions than the originals but must have the same number of frames and the same frame rate. Like with PNG files, replacement video files are loaded from mod folders: for instance mods/[my_mod]/08/02/xarc/011001.bik is the animation where the tree spirit lifts the egg back into the nest.
  • Load replacement textures for the 3d models. Each original tm file contains several textures, each with its associated mipmaps. The replacement files are zip archives containing dds packaged textures. The replacement archives must be placed at the root of the mod directory and be named after the tm file they replace: mods/[my_mod]/april_waitress.tm.zip . Each zip archive must contain all the textures from the replaced tm file. The textures need to be encoded in uncompressed RGB or RGBA dds files with mipmaps. Files inside the archive must be named according to the replaced texture name, but with the bmp extension replaced with dds : backdress-highres-battic.dds The extractAllTextures console command can be used to extract the tm files to png files.

  6. The Longest Journey use ResidualVM daily to play without most bugs

I just played through the entire game again, and there are no bugs. ScummVM did crash a lot, however, but I'd guess that Windows 11 is to blame for that.
