Cruising is a huge industry, so it makes sense that the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) — which started out shipping cargo — got in on the venture in 1988 with the purchase of its first cruise ship. Since then, the company has been steadily growing, adding new ships and destinations to its thriving cruise line.

Although it’s headquartered in Switzerland, you’ll find MSC cruises all over the world, including throughout the United States. Let’s take a look at MSC’s cruises, where they sail and what to expect when you’re aboard.

About MSC cruises

Here’s a quick overview of some of MSC’s key features.

Package types: There are three levels of experience to choose from on MSC. Bella is the least expensive, while Fantastica allows you to get free in-room breakfast and select your room type. Aurea is MSC’s top-tier package and includes access to exclusive amenities, as well as additional discounts and dining privileges.

Cabin type s : On MSC ships you’ll find the standard cruise ship cabins, including interior, ocean view, veranda and various types of suites.

Main U.S. routes: MSC has only a handful of departure ports from within the U.S. Most of its routes depart from Miami to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Points currency and loyalty program: The loyalty program of MSC is called the Voyager’s Club. Points are earned for the cruises you take and the money you spend while on board.

MSC cruise destinations

You can find MSC cruises all over the globe, including the Caribbean, Canada, New England, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Northern Europe, South Africa, South America and Asia. There are also worldwide cruises that sail to several regions around the globe.

MSC's worldwide cruises come in as the longest trips, with itineraries lasting as many as 127 nights. Meanwhile, the cruise line's shortest options include weekend trips to the Bahamas sailing for just two nights.

MSC cruise prices

The reviews of MSC Cruises will likely mention the price of your trip, which is often cheaper than comparable trips on other popular cruise lines. Of course, the total cost will vary based on the trip duration, time of year and what kind of room you select. The least expensive options you’ll find are on short Mediterranean cruises, which can cost as little as $119 per person.

Prices are also affected by the dates that you’re traveling. A three-night cruise to the Bahamas can cost as little as $149 per person, but that same trip can cost up to $349 per person during periods of high demand.

As you’d expect, the most expensive cruises on MSC are the longest. For example, the 127-night World Cruise costs $21,929 per person.

What is the best MSC ship?

There are a total of 23 ships in MSC’s fleet. According to U.S. News, the best MSC ship is the MSC Bellissima. Launched in 2019, the ship boasts a full-sized bowling alley and multiple pools, along with an array of restaurants, a spa and live entertainment. The ranking was calculated using a mix of user reviews and health ratings.

What is the newest MSC ship?

The MSC World Europa, MSC’s newest ship, officially debuted at the end of 2022 in Qatar. This ship features more than 2,600 cabins, 33 restaurants and six swimming pools.

What’s included in an MSC cruise

MSC’s cruise packages are on par with other mid-tier cruise lines. No matter what package you purchase, all food and entertainment is included, as is access to the main parts of the ship. This includes pools, the buffet restaurant and a nightly seated dinner.

If you purchase a higher-end package, you’ll be able to enjoy more amenities. The Fantastica experience, for example, includes free room service delivery for breakfast. The top-tier Aurea package includes complimentary room service for all meals.

Neither Wi-Fi nor specialty drinks are included as part of the base price, but they can be purchased separately. The drink package has a range of options, including non-alcoholic drinks such as soda and different types of alcohol.

MSC loyalty program: Voyager’s Club

Voyager’s Club is the loyalty program for frequent MSC cruise passengers. There are four levels in the program, and each has its own benefits.

Voyagers Club levels

The Voyager Clubs levels are Classic, Silver, Gold and Diamond.

How to earn: Classic membership is earned by going on at least one MSC cruise or having a confirmed booking on an upcoming cruise. This tier is for members who have between 1 and 2,199 points.

Best benefits: 5% discount on future cruises, discounts on packages.

How to earn: Earn 2,200 to 4,299 points.

Best benefits: $50 onboard credit per person on cruises booked at least nine months before departure, double points for cruises booked more than 12 months in advance.

How to earn: Earn 4,300 to 9,999 points.

Best benefits: One hour of complimentary thermal area access, priority disembarkation, complimentary photos.

How to earn: Earn 10,000+ points.

Best benefits: Complimentary tasting dinner, one free dance lesson, complimentary slippers and bathrobe, priority embarkation and disembarkation.

How to earn Voyager Club points

There are two ways to earn Voyager Club points. First, you’ll earn a set amount of points for taking a cruise — the specific amount will depend on the length of the cruise and the experience level you choose. Second, you’ll earn points for the activities you pre-purchase and for any onboard expenses that you incur.

Wi-Fi is not included in MSC’s basic fare. There are different packages available to those who are sailing which can be purchased before you travel or during your cruise. MSC doesn’t publish its Wi-Fi package pricing online, but for example, you can expect to pay around $270 for a two-device upgraded Wi-Fi package on a seven-day cruise with MSC Seascape.

MSC cruises are not entirely inclusive, though they do provide a lot with your base package. This includes your cabin, food, live entertainment, port stops and coffee, tea and water. They don’t include specialty drinks such as soda or alcohol, nor do they include Wi-Fi or any port excursions you’d like to go on.

MSC Cruises reviews will let you know that MSC allows passengers to add on a drink package to their cruise. The price will vary depending on your actual cruise, as well as the type of package that you choose. There are five types of packages available: Easy, Easy Plus, Premium Extra, Alcohol-free and Minors.

Expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $88 per day for any drink packages that you purchase.

Whether or not you’ll need a COVID vaccine or COVID test while sailing on MSC cruise lines will depend on where you’re going. For cruises leaving from the United States, you don’t need either. However, you will need to provide other personal information, such as your name, address and date of birth.

MSC Cruises FAQ

msc cruise package levels

Cruise Critic brings you some of the most frequently asked questions about MSC Cruises.

I'm confused by MSC's cruise fares. What are "inclusive experiences" and how do I know what to book?

MSC Cruises sells its cruises based on a tiered pricing structure. Prospective cruisers have four options (Bella, Fantastica, Aurea and Yacht Club), each increasingly more expensive, but with more inclusions and a better range of cabins to choose from.

What is the lowest cruise experience I can buy and what does it come with?

msc cruise package levels

The Bella Experience is the lowest tier. It comes with no inclusions (including no room service) beyond the always-included dining venues on each specific ship, all onboard performances and most, but not all, activities.

Bella cruisers can request early or late seating for dinner, but priority will be given to higher-level cruisers, with the set time confirmed once onboard. Bella cruisers can choose from inside, ocean-view (mostly with partial views) and balcony cabins on lower decks.

I don't want the lowest level cruise experience, but I also don't want the highest. What are the middle options?

One level up from Bella is the Fantastica Experience, which comes with 24-hour room service (free between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.). Fantastica cruisers get access to better located cabins (including on the upper decks) and ocean views with unobstructed views, as well as their preferred set dining time.

The next level is Aurea, which comes with a slew of perks including a drinks package that features a selection of spirits, cocktails, Heineken draft beers (and bottle Miller Lite in the Caribbean), wine, soft drinks and coffee 24-hour room service (also free between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.)

Also included are a spa package with two 50-minute massages per stateroom and unrestricted use of the thermal area, access to a private sun deck, priority boarding on embarkation day and My Choice Dining, which lets cruisers choose whatever time (not just early or late seatings) they want to dine in the main dining room.

Aurea cruisers can choose an inside, ocean-view or balcony cabin but also have access to a limited number of suites onboard.

What is the MSC Yacht Club?

msc cruise package levels

The highest experience level a cruiser can book on select MSC Cruise ships is the MSC Yacht Club, which is a suites-only enclave at the top of specific MSC ships. Cruisers staying in the Yacht Club have 24-hour butler service, a dedicated concierge, priority check-in and disembarkation, unlimited drinks in all venues across the ship, complimentary Wi-Fi and access to a private dining room just for Yacht Club cruisers, as well as a suites-only sun deck and lounge.

I've heard that under 12 sail free on MSC cruise ships. Is that true?

Only on select sailings in Europe do under 12 sail free. In the Caribbean, under 2 sail free, but again only on select sailings.

What currency is used on MSC Cruises?

The U.S. dollar is used for cruises in the Caribbean, South America and South Africa as well as for Grand Voyages going to Europe and to Australia. The is used on cruises in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Antilles, Dubai, the Emirates and Oman, as well as Grand Voyages departing from Europe.

Can I bring my own alcohol or soda onboard an MSC cruise ship?

No. No beverages (of any kind) -- or food -- are permitted onboard MSC cruise ships, unless medically required.

What is the dress code on MSC Cruises?

msc cruise package levels

Casual attire is acceptable during the day on all MSC cruises. Select nights during the cruise will be designated as formal. On those nights, men are expected to wear suits or a jacket and tie and women are expected to wear cocktail dresses in all restaurants except the buffet. On nonformal nights, jeans are permitted as long as they are not ripped or torn.

Check out our picks for the best formal accessories to make you stand out on your cruise .

Do you have to pay gratuities on an MSC cruise?

MSC Cruises charges a per person/per day service fee on all its cruises. The fee is automatically added to cruisers' onboard accounts, or can be paid for ahead of the cruise. Passengers who are unsatisfied with their service may remove the charges by contacting Guest Relations while onboard. An additional gratuity of is applied to all bar purchases.

MSC Fantastica Experience: Should You Upgrade?

This post may contain affiliate links. if you click one, i may earn a commission at no cost to you. as an amazon associate, i earn from qualifying purchases..

When you book an MSC cruise, it’s not as simple as deciding which cabin you want to stay in and securing your place. There are different ‘Experiences’ that you have to choose from.

These will impact what cabin you get, your dining options, and the perks you get.

The Bella experience is the basic package, while the Fantastica MSC fare is one step up from that, and then Aurea is the top level.

In this guide, I’ll take you through the Fantastica experience, what to expect from it, and whether it’s worth paying the extra to upgrade.

Me on Fantastica Balcony

  • What is the Fantastica package on MSC Cruises?
  • What’s included in the MSC Fantastica package?
  • What is the difference between MSC Bella and Fantastica?
  • How much does the Fantastica experience cost on an MSC cruise?
  • Is Fantastica worth it on MSC Cruises?

What Is The Fantastica Package on MSC Cruises?

The Fantastica experience is the mid-level cruise package available when you book an MSC cruise. It allows you to select your cabin and location, and request either early or late dining. It comes with a small selection of other perks.

When you book with MSC Cruises, you have to choose an experience – these aren’t optional. The Bella experience is the most basic and also the cheapest, while Fantastica is the mid-range option.

The main reason for choosing Fantastica, for most people (me included) is the chance to choose your room and avoid any undesirable cabins , like these ones that have metal rather than glass fronts…

msc cruise package levels

The Aurea package is more of an upgrade for people who want a lot of additional benefits added in. You can read more about the differences between the packages here: MSC Bella Vs Fantastica Vs Aurea .

What’s Included in the MSC Fantastica Package?

Firstly, remember that Fantastica is an upgrade on the Bella package, so you get everything that you would get with a Bella experience, plus some extras.

Here’s everything you get with the Bella experience, which you also get with Fantastica:

  • Your accommodation, meals in the main dining room and buffet, and live entertainment
  • The option to book a discounted drinks package when you book your cruise
  • Access to the swimming pools, sports facilities and gym
  • Earn loyalty points for the MSC Voyagers Club every time you cruise

The Bella experience is very much what you would consider to be the basic cruise experience.

So you get your room, and you don’t have to pay extra for your dining if you stick to the main dining rooms or the buffet restaurant, that’s all included.

As is your live entertainment, which are the nightly theatre shows taking place on most days of your cruise. This doesn’t mean all of your entertainment is free though – some features may have an additional cost.

Performers on stage aboard MSC cruise

There are some things that are always free to use though, including the swimming pools and the sports facilities – including the walking/running track, basketball and so on. The gym’s free too, so if you’re in the mood to burn off that buffet meal you’ve just indulged on, you always can.

The kids’ clubs are always free too, so during normal activity hours, you can drop them off and let them enjoy a wide range of activities with the other children on board. Services like babysitting late at night may have additional costs though.

MSC kids club

Finally, every time you cruise you’ll earn points towards the MSC loyalty programme, which is called MSC Voyagers Club. These points will earn you rewards for future cruises with MSC.

So, what else do you get with Fantastica that you don’t get with Bella? Here are the perks…

Here are the benefits of upgrading to a Fantastica experience:

  • The chance to choose your own cabin and location on the ship
  • One free change to your cruise (cabin or cruise date)
  • Breakfast served in your cabin with free delivery
  • 20% discount on a speciality restaurant pre-paid package
  • Chance to request your preferred dinner sitting (subject to availability)

Now, let’s take a closer look at each of the Fantastica perks to help you to decide if it’s worth the extra cost…

Choose Your Own Cabin Number

The main reason people tend to choose Fantastica is the chance to choose your cabin number – since it means you’ve got more chance of getting one of the better rooms on the ship.

The Bella cabins are usually in undesirable locations such as right at the top front, where you will feel the movement more and so are more likely to suffer from seasickness. The Fantastica cabins, however, have the best mid-ship locations.

Suggested read: Will You Get Seasick On A Cruise? How To Know

This is the Fantastica balcony cabin that we stayed in onboard MSC Virtuosa:

Fantastica balcony cabin on MSC Virtuosa

We had previously booked a Bella balcony, but it was right at the front and MSC Virtuosa is a very big ship so we didn’t fancy all of that walking with two young kids.

Nipping back you your room for your sunglasses can be a 15-minute job if your cabin isn’t in a convenient spot. And don’t get me started on carrying sleeping children while wearing heels!

The Bella balcony room also had a metal balcony rather than glass, which meant that our children wouldn’t have been able to see the view.

So, before the cruise, we paid an extra £80 to upgrade to a Fantastica balcony, which I think was worth it.

With the Fantastica package, you get one free change to your cruise. With Bella, if you need to change your cabin or your sailing date, you need to pay an additional fee, which we did.

Free Breakfast Room Service

A nice touch with Fantastica is the free breakfast served in your room . Room service normally has a delivery charge, and outside of breakfast you have to pay for the items you order too. But at breakfast time, Fantastica guests get both the food and the delivery for free.

To order, you just hang this card on your door handle before you go to bed.

MSC cruise breakfast menu

On the other side is the room service menu, so you just write how many you would like of each item.

MSC cruise breakfast menu

Speciality Dining Discount

With MSC Cruises, you can also book a speciality dining package, paid up front, to allow you to experience some of the different restaurants on board. Do this with a Fantastica experience package and you’ll save 20% compared to if you wait until you’re on the ship.

msc cruise package levels

If you like speciality dining, this could make the upgrade worth it for you. But really, I think it’s just a way for MSC Cruises to encourage more people to book multiple dining experiences.

Choice of Dining Sitting

Finally, you’ll also have the chance to request your preferred dinner sitting, either early or late. The actual times will vary, but you’ll be assigned a time either in the early window (usually 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm) or the late one (usually 7.45 pm to 9.45 pm).

That doesn’t mean you can pick a time, but if you request early, it means you’ll be given a time between 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm, and that’s when you’re expected to turn up.

These are subject to availability, with guests assigned their seating in priority order from the Suites down, so there’s a chance you won’t get your requested time still if you book an Inside cabin.

Also, those times are just an example and the actual times for each sitting can vary depending on the ship and itinerary.

If you’re given a time that you don’t want, you can always try to change it. If you have a particular reason such as young kids who can’t wait until 9 pm to eat dinner, then you have a very high chance of success, particularly if you booked Fantastica. #

But even if you booked Bella and you just don’t fancy that time, then it’s still definitely worth an ask if you want to switch.

What Is the Difference Between MSC Bella and Fantastica?

The main difference between MSC Bella and MSC Fantastica is that Fantastica gives you more choice – choice of where your cabin will be, and when you’ll eat dinner.

How Much Does the Fantastica Experience Cost on an MSC Cruise?

What’s clear is that the Fantastica experience is an upgrade – you wouldn’t choose the Bella experience over the Fantastica if both cost exactly the same.

So, how much does Fantastica cost?

There isn’t a fixed price, and it’ll depend on your cruise date, and how sold out the ship is. Generally, the cost to upgrade from Bella to Fantastica will cost around £50-100 ($60-120) per person, but it may be more depending on your itinerary.

There may even be some cruises where Bella is not an option, and you have to book Fantastica – but if you do, then the cost will already be included in your fare. You might think that it’s free, but it just means that you aren’t seeing the lower Bella costs. The extra fee is incorporated into the fare you’re paying.

This will happen when all of the cheapest cabins have sold out, those that are in less desirable locations on the ship. MSC doesn’t want you to get the benefits of Fantastica without paying for them, so it puts a limit on how many people can book Bella instead.

Sorry if you saw a ‘free’ Fantastica upgrade and thought you were getting a great deal – it just means you’re a little late, and Fantastica is the minimum option available!

MSC Seascape deck

Is Fantastica Worth It on MSC Cruises?

So the big question is whether Fantastica is worth paying the upgrade price, or if you’re better off sticking to Bella.

With a lot of options for different cruise packages, you’re able to pay extra for the benefits if you decide not to upgrade, which means you can pick and choose the things that matter most to you. But that doesn’t work with MSC.

If you decide to book Bella, you can’t then pay a fee to request a different dining sitting, or to change your cabin location.

So you have to look at the benefits that Fantastica offers, and decide whether they’re something that matters to you.

The main reasons to upgrade would be if you cared about the location of your cabin, and if you want to have more of a choice when it comes to eating in the main dining rooms.

If you’re not that bothered about where your cabin is, and you will spend more evenings eating in the buffet restaurant, Fantastica probably isn’t worth it, and you might as well get the cheapest MSC cruise you can with Bella.

Bella inside cabin on MSC Virtuosa

But if you want the best views, or to be closer to the elevators, and you do want to make sure you avoid a super-early or super-late dinner sitting time, then pay for the upgrade.

The other perks – the free breakfast in your room, the speciality restaurant package discount and the free cruise change – are nice to have. The cruise change is only useful if something happens to cause you to move your cruise, and your travel insurance may cover you for that anyway.

So check the prices for the upgrade when you’re planning on sailing, and think about whether you want to control your cabin location and have a say on your dinner dining time. That’ll tell you whether you should be booking Bella or Fantastica.

Or maybe you should be booking Aurea instead. Read more about the MSC Aurea experience to see whether it’s worth paying for the top-tier package.

The ultimate guide to MSC Cruises ships and itineraries

Gene Sloan

MSC Cruises may be the biggest cruise line you've never heard of — assuming you're an American.

While the Switzerland-based company is the third-biggest cruise line in the world, it has far less name recognition among Americans than big U.S.-based lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line . That's because, until recently, MSC Cruises mostly catered to Europeans. A large percentage of its customers came from countries such as Italy, Germany, France and Spain.

That's all changing now — and in a big way.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

As it expands its fleet at a rapid pace , MSC Cruises is massively building its footprint in North America in an effort to woo more Americans. As recently as 2017, the line only had a single vessel based in North America. Now it's up to three ships sailing out of U.S. ports, and by the end of 2023, that number will have shot up to five.

All the North America-based ships are marketed heavily to Americans, and the line has tailored some of the features and activities on the vessels to a North American crowd.

Like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises has been building big resortlike vessels that offer every sort of amusement known to humans, from giant water parks to race car simulators. It currently operates eight of the 20 biggest cruise ships in the world — one of which (MSC Meraviglia) now calls North America home with year-round sailings out of New York City.

3 things TPG loves about MSC Cruises

  • Its affordability
  • The incredible array of activities on its ships
  • The status match it offers with its loyalty program

What we could do without

  • Onboard announcements in five languages (on overseas sailings)

The MSC Cruises fleet

MSC Cruises has grown enormously in recent years. As recently as early 2017, the line had just 12 ships in operation. But it's added new ships at a rapid pace over the past six years and now operates 22 vessels, more than any other major line besides Royal Caribbean and Carnival. It also has three more giant new ships on the way in the next few years.

If that sounds like too many ships to get your head around, note that all 22 of the vessels in operation, as well as the three on order, fall into six distinct classes . The ships within each of the classes have similar sizes and onboard attractions. If you know one ship in the class, you know them all.

Related: MSC Cruises ships from newest to oldest — a complete list

As a result of its rapid growth, MSC Cruises recently passed Norwegian to become the world's third-biggest cruise brand when measured by passenger capacity. Only Royal Caribbean and Carnival are bigger.

Not including pulldown bunks and pullout sofas, MSC Cruises' 22 ships have 77,832 berths — about 21,000 more than Norwegian's fleet. At its current pace of growth, MSC Cruises could soon pass Carnival to become the world's second-biggest line.

As noted above, the MSC Cruises fleet includes eight of the world's 20 biggest cruise vessels — MSC World Europa , MSC Euribia , MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia , MSC Bellissima, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape . Built in the last six years, these eight ships aren't quite as big as Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis Class vessels (the world's biggest cruise ships), but they're right up there when it comes to amenities and passenger capacity.

msc cruise package levels

The grande dame of the MSC Cruises fleet is its recently unveiled MSC World Europa. At 215,863 tons, it's the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever built and the first of a new series of so-called World Class vessels that are nearly as big as Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships.

The next-biggest ships in the MSC Cruises fleet are its recently unveiled Meraviglia Class vessels: MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Euribia. Similar in design, these five ships aren't quite as big as MSC World Europa, but they're right up there when it comes to size, amenities and passenger capacity.

MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Euribia, which debuted in 2019, 2021 and 2023, respectively, are a tad longer than MSC Bellissima and MSC Meraviglia and are considered a subset of the class known as Meraviglia Plus. Each can hold 4,842 passengers at double occupancy (or 6,334 passengers if every last pulldown bunk and pullout sofa is filled).

The other two Meraviglia Class ships, which date to 2019 and 2017, can carry more than 5,600 passengers with every berth filled.

In addition to these five giants, MSC Cruises also operates four large Seaside Class ships. Each has a total capacity of 5,336 to 5,632 passengers.

Add those in, and MSC Cruises operates 10 of the world's 35 biggest cruise ships, plus four somewhat smaller Fantasia Class vessels that can each hold around 4,400 passengers at maximum occupancy.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Together, the 14 World, Meraviglia, Seaside and Fantasia Class vessels make up MSC Cruises' big-ship fleet. The line's remaining eight vessels, split among two classes, are considerably smaller, with maximum occupancy topping out at 2,700 to 3,200 passengers.

The eight smaller ships, which in general are the line's older ships, allow MSC Cruises to offer itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of the World Class or Meraviglia Class vessels, although even the biggest MSC Cruises ships are still designed to be able to call at most ports around the world.

Among the smallest MSC Cruises ships is the MSC Armonia.

The smaller ships also appeal to a subset of MSC Cruises fans who are willing to give up some onboard amenities in exchange for intimacy. They're usually less expensive on a per-day basis, too.

In addition to all the above, MSC Group — the line's parent company — has announced plans for yet another class of big ships to start arriving later this decade, though few details have been released. MSC Group is also developing a series of small luxury vessels that'll operate under a separate brand called Explora Journeys.

Destinations and itineraries

msc cruise package levels

MSC Cruises sails almost everywhere in the world, but its heaviest presence is in Europe, where it's the biggest cruise operator.

In a typical summer, the line will deploy the vast majority of its ships in the Mediterranean or northern Europe. In recent years, the line has also kept at least a couple of ships in Florida in summer for voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. This year, the line had two ships based in Florida for summer sailings to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, plus one ship sailing out of New York City for the summer.

During winter, MSC Cruises typically will add more ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. (For winter 2023-2024, it expects to have six in the region.) It'll also typically send four or five ships to South America in winter and often deploys vessels in winter to South Africa and the Middle East.

For winter 2023-2024, it'll have one ship in South Africa. The line's Middle East deployment this year has been cut back due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Additionally, MSC Cruises often offers an around-the-world cruise in winter on a single ship.

In North America, MSC Cruises ships have generally sailed out of Miami , but the line recently added Port Canaveral and New York City as home ports, too. The line also offers cruises from the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Martinique and Guadeloupe, and in a major development, the line opened its first private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve , in the Bahamas in 2019. It's a major stop for many MSC Cruises itineraries in the region.

In Europe, major MSC Cruises hubs include Southampton, England; Copenhagen; Kiel and Hamburg in Germany; Ancona, Venice, Genoa, Naples, Palermo, Bari and Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) in Italy; Barcelona, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca in Spain; and Marseille, France.

Who sails MSC Cruises?

msc cruise package levels

MSC Cruises is increasingly known for having big, bustling megaships that'll appeal to people who like a megaresort experience. In other words, if you're the kind of person who loves staying on property at Disney World or at a giant Las Vegas resort , this could be the line for you.

The bigger MSC Cruises ships offer vacationers a ton of options for dining (some vessels have more than a dozen distinct places to eat dinner or at least grab a quick bite) or entertainment. They're lively and fun.

They also have an inordinate amount of teen- and tween-friendly attractions — everything from some of the largest waterslides at sea to sprawling amusement areas with race car simulators, flight simulators and XD cinemas (more on all this below). That makes them particularly appealing to families, including multigenerational groups. Families are a big part of MSC Cruises' business.

But it's not just families that flock to MSC Cruises.

The line's ships are designed to offer something for everyone, and they thus appeal to a wide demographic, including couples of all ages and even solo travelers (the line has added solo cabins on its newer ships and occasionally runs promotions for solo travelers). They also draw customers from a wide range of the income spectrum.

At one level, MSC Cruises ships have a for-the-masses feel. However, overlaid across many of the line's ships are high-end suites, upscale restaurants and luxury services — most notably the suites and amenities in the exclusive, upscale MSC Yacht Club areas found on some vessels (more on that later). As a result, the line draws a good number of luxury-seeking travelers.

The demographic profile of MSC Cruises ships can be markedly different depending on where the vessels are based. On Caribbean sailings out of Florida, you'll find that a large percentage of passengers are English-speaking North Americans.

MSC Cruises voyages in Europe are often heavily filled with Europeans speaking Italian, German, Spanish and French, as well as some English speakers. In Europe, the line offers onboard programming in all five of these languages (all crew members speak English no matter where the ships are sailing).

Reality check: Due to the diverse origins of passengers on European sailings, the line typically makes announcements in all five of the aforementioned languages. This can result in extraordinarily long announcements at times, which can be a distraction to some cruisers. The good news is that on sailings out of U.S. ports, only safety announcements are made in all five languages. Other announcements are in English only.

Cabins and suites

msc cruise package levels

MSC Cruises offers a wide range of accommodations on its ships. On its newest vessels, you'll find everything from relatively low-cost, windowless "interior" cabins that measure as little as 172 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to suites more than five times that size that sprawl across two decks.

Still, MSC Cruises doesn't offer the sort of truly giant suites (more than 1,000 to 2,000 square feet) you'll find on some Norwegian and Royal Caribbean ships.

msc cruise package levels

At the high end, the accommodations are aimed at affluent travelers who, for whatever reason, prefer the megaship experience to being on a luxury ship, and they can be quite impressive.

The biggest suites on MSC Grandiosa, which launched in 2019, span two levels and offer around 635 square feet of interior space, plus another 237 square feet of outdoor balcony space.

msc cruise package levels

On more than half of MSC Cruises' ships, many of the top suites are part of an exclusive, keycard-accessed area called the MSC Yacht Club . Billed as an upscale "ship within a ship" and aimed at luxury travelers, the MSC Yacht Club is at the very top of vessels and comes with a private lounge, a pool, sunning areas and even its own restaurant.

MSC Yacht Club accommodations also come with 24-hour butler service and a dedicated concierge.

Solo cabins (called interior studios) measuring just 127 square feet can be found on the line's seven newest vessels.

Insider tip: Passengers can use the interactive TVs in cabins to browse information, find out about daily events and activities, check bills and book services. On some ships, MSC for Me interactive wristbands can open your cabin door and also allow you to book services or make contactless payments for items on board.

Restaurants and dining

msc cruise package levels

While a few of MSC Cruises' smallest ships have relatively limited dining venues, many of the line's vessels offer a wide range of choices.

On the line's recently unveiled MSC Euribia, for instance, there are nearly a dozen distinct eateries, as well as a number of bars and lounges that serve at least small bites. MSC Seashore has five specialty restaurants that feature waterfront, outdoor seating on the ship's boardwalk.

Every vessel has at least one or more main dining rooms and a casual buffet where meals are included in the fare.

For dinner in a main dining room, you must either have My Choice dining with the Aurea experience (a flexible dining option where you dine whenever you want) or classic dining (where you have a fixed table and time for dinner).

Nearly every ship also has at least one — and sometimes quite a few — extra-charge venues. Among the most common across the fleet is the American-style steakhouse Butcher's Cut, which is found on more than half the line's vessels. There also are sushi bars on more than half the line's ships, with varying names like Kaito Sushi and Galaxy Sushi.

The line's newest ships have teppanyaki restaurants, too, and passengers on MSC Cruises' Seaside Class ships, as well as MSC Meraviglia and MSC Splendida, can dine at a Mediterranean-style seafood restaurant.

Several of the line's newest vessels, including MSC Grandiosa and MSC Bellissima, also have the French cuisine-serving L'Atelier Bistrot.

Entertainment and activities

MSC Cruises offers a broad range of entertainment and activities on its ships. As noted above, the line's biggest vessels offer multiple entertainment venues, from Broadway-style theaters to spaces for circus-like performances; all manner of deck-top attractions; large casinos; and full-service spas. Plus, you'll find multiple bars, lounges and nightlife spots.

Theaters and shows

msc cruise package levels

Like other megaship lines, MSC Cruises is known for big, glitzy theater productions performed in onboard theaters that are as state-of-the-art as anything you'll find on Broadway.

On the line's newer ships, such as MSC Euribia, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Grandiosa, there are main theaters that hold nearly 1,000 people. They offer as many as six different full-scale theatrical productions during a typical voyage, with multiple showtimes for each production and a range of styles. You'll find original Broadway-style musicals, piano concerts and even operas.

Some MSC Cruises ships have high-tech, multipurpose entertainment spaces that serve as comedy clubs and karaoke bars but can also transform into music venues. Dubbed the TV Studio & Bar on some ships, these spaces also house radio and TV broadcasting equipment, and they can host games, quizzes and talent contests aired live on TV sets in cabins.

Other interior attractions and activities

msc cruise package levels

In addition to entertainment spaces, the interiors of MSC Cruises ships are loaded with other venues where passengers can kick back and let loose day and night, including a seemingly endless array of bars, lounges and nightspots.

Every MSC Cruises ship has a casino, and on the line's larger vessels, they are big operations. Le Grand Casino on MSC Grandiosa, for instance, has 164 slot machines, 12 table games (including blackjack, roulette and poker) and its own bar.

The five Meraviglia and Meraviglia Plus Class vessels also have soaring interior mall-like spaces called Gallerias with bars, restaurants and retail shops, as does the new MSC World Europa.

Many of the Gallerias, for example, are home to an innovative chocolate bar and boutique created by well-known French patissier and chocolatier Jean-Philippe Maury.

The Gallerias on the five Meraviglia and Meraviglia Plus Class vessels — MSC Euribia, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima — are topped with one of the most stunning features found at sea: a dazzling "digital sky" made with curving LED screens that offer regular light shows during the day and evening. There's something similar on MSC World Europa.

The bigger MSC Cruises ships also have interactive game zones with such attractions as Formula One racing simulators, immersive XD cinemas, arcade games and even full-size bowling alleys.

msc cruise package levels

For something more soothing, all MSC Cruises ships include spas. These can be quite big on the larger vessels, with expansive thermal areas and a wide choice of treatments and services.

Insider tip: Passengers can get information about onboard entertainment and restaurants (and make reservations) on the interactive screens found around MSC Cruises vessels.

Top-deck attractions

msc cruise package levels

The top decks of MSC Cruises ships offer pools, hot tubs and plenty of lounge space, plus some spectacular family-focused fun zones — on the line's newest ships, at least.

On the line's Meraviglia and Seaside Class ships, top-deck amenities include sprawling back-of-the-ship water parks with multiple waterslides, ropes courses and watery play areas for the little ones.

msc cruise package levels

Some ships even have zip lines — the longest at sea.

Additionally, the main pool areas on the newest MSC Cruises ships are among the biggest and most stunning at sea. Some of the line's ships also have adults-only pools topped with glass ceilings that can be opened on warm days.

Children's programs

msc cruise package levels

MSC Cruises has some of the most extensive children's programs at sea, with dedicated clubs and activities for children as young as a couple of months old through the age of 17.

On most ships, the line offers programming for five distinct age groups.

For the very youngest cruisers, there's Baby Club, a program for babies and toddlers up to the age of 3. The line partnered with baby care brand Chicco to develop dedicated Baby Club play areas on every ship with toys, games and music and rhythm activities. You can leave your toddlers at the clubs, which have dedicated staff, or stay and play with them.

MSC Cruises ships also have a dedicated Mini Club (ages 3 to 6) and Junior Club (ages 7 to 11) with age-appropriate activities. Designed in partnership with the Lego Group, the Mini Clubs offer games, events and activities such as arts and crafts. Junior Clubs have a Masterchef at Sea Juniors competition, plus acting, dancing and singing activities.

MSC Cruises ships also have Young Club, a tween program (ages 12 to 14) that includes sports tournaments, high-tech games and other activities.

Then there's Teen Club (ages 15 to 17), which hosts disco parties, karaoke parties and Wii, Xbox and PlayStation 4 tournaments. On MSC Grandiosa, teens even get the chance to pilot a drone through an obstacle course during an activity called the Drone Academy, and the ship holds a teen dance competition designed in partnership with the company behind "The X Factor."

Kids and teens clubs on newer MSC Cruises ships can also access cutting-edge equipment like 3D printing machines, virtual reality devices and 3D product scanning, all of which are used in activities.

What to know before you go

Required documents.

If you're a U.S. citizen on a cruise that starts and ends in a U.S. port, you'll need either a current passport or an official copy of your birth certificate and a driver's license or other government-issued photo identification to sail. Passports must be valid for at least six months.

For cruises from international ports, you'll need a passport. It's important that the name on your reservation is listed exactly as it appears on your passport or other official proof of nationality.

MSC Cruises adds an automatic service charge of $16 per person to final bills on sailings out of U.S. ports. Sailings with pricing in euros have a 12 euro charge ($13.13 at current exchange rates). Children 2 to 11 pay half the adult rate on most cruises. Children under 2 are not charged for service.

Also, a 15% gratuity is added to bills at bars for cruisers who do not have a drinks package. If you buy a drinks package, the gratuity charges for drinks is folded into the package price when you book it. A 15% service charge is also added to items in minibars, salons and spas.

MSC Cruises has been rolling out Wi-Fi with speeds so fast that you'll be able to watch Netflix from your room on your mobile device. Unlike some lines, though, MSC Cruises doesn't offer flat-fee pricing for Wi-Fi. Instead, MSC Cruises charges by the number of devices you use and how you want to use the internet (think: browsing, texting, sending emails or video streaming).

Basic packages for browsing start around $72 for one device with unlimited data. A two-device plan with unlimited data for browsing costs about $109. There's also a four-device browsing plan for about $223. If you're looking to stream video along with other internet uses, you'll need a streaming plan. These start around $100 for one device and can be as high as $313 for a four-device plan.

Unlike other cruise lines, MSC Cruises does not let passengers switch their internet plan from one device to another during the cruise, even if they're only using one device at a time. Make sure you sign up for the Wi-Fi plan on the device you intend to use it with. If you'll want access on both your phone and your tablet, you will need a two-device plan.

Passengers can chat with friends and family on board ships even if they don't have an internet package by downloading the MSC for Me app to a smart device. The app also lets you book services on board.

Carry-on drinks policy

Unlike some lines, MSC Cruises doesn't allow passengers to bring their own alcohol on board.

Smoking policy

Smoking (including electronic cigarette smoking) is allowed in a limited number of designated areas on ships, with the primary smoking area on ships being an outdoor pool area that varies by ship and is indicated by signage. Smoking is forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies, and those who violate this rule will face a $250 fee.

Unlike some lines, MSC Cruises does not build self-service launderettes onto its ships. Vessels offer extra-charge laundry and dry-cleaning services.

Electrical outlets

All vessels have standard North American-style, 110-volt outlets in rooms, as well as European-style, 220-volt outlets. A growing number of vessels also have USB ports in cabins.

For cruises in the Caribbean, South America and South Africa, as well as on MSC Grand Voyages going to Europe and to Australia, the onboard currency is the U.S. dollar.

On cruises in other parts of the world, the onboard currency is the euro. All vessels operate on a cashless system with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account. You'll receive a Cruise Card (or, on the newer ships, an MSC for Me wristband) that you can use to make purchases.

Drinking age

You must be at least 21 years old to consume alcohol on sailings in the U.S. and the Caribbean. The drinking age on sailings everywhere else in the world is 18.

During the day, there's no specific dress code, and people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination and you're bound for the top deck, that means dressing for the beach — T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to put on when you go inside) are just fine.

On most evenings, the line recommends "smart casual" dress, meaning summery dresses for women and a lightweight jacket for men. On select days, the line also holds Gala evenings on its ships where the dress code can be more formal. For Gala evenings, if dining in a main dining room, the line suggests a tuxedo, dinner jacket or dark suit and tie for men and a dressy outfit, formal gown or cocktail dress for women.

MSC Cruises loyalty program

MSC Cruises has a point-based frequent cruiser program, the MSC Voyagers Club , that has four tiers ranging from Classic (requiring 1 point) to Diamond (10,000 points).

Members earn points based on the length of the cruises they take and which "experience" they book on those sailings. There are four different "experiences" you can book on an MSC Cruises sailing, each with different inclusions and price points. The most basic "Bella" experience will get you fewer points than the top "MSC Yacht Club" experience.

For a sailing of under five nights, for instance, your earnings would range from 200 to 800 points depending on the experience you book. For cruises that are five to nine nights in length, you'd earn from 500 to 1,500 points depending on the experience.

Every person in your stateroom will earn points for the cruise. You can also earn points with onboard spending and any bookings you made before embarkation. You'll earn 100 points for every $150 in prepaid and onboard expenses.

Know, though, that there are a couple of key caveats. Only the Voyagers Club member who makes the final payment for the onboard expenses will receive those points. For prepaid expenses, points will be equally distributed among the cabin occupants.

Say, for example, the total amount of prepaid onboard services that apply to all cabin occupants before the cruise is $600. If there are four cabin occupants, the spending for the points calculation of each member will be $150, which is equal to 100 points.

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the entry-level tier (Classic) doesn't bring all that many truly valuable rewards. By far the most alluring benefit at this level is the 5% discount that members get when booking future sailings (note that this discount is not valid on Tandem and MSC Grand Tours). That's real savings every time you book a cruise.

The real perks begin at Diamond status, which brings a free dinner in an extra-charge restaurant, priority embarkation at the start of a cruise and priority disembarkation at the end of a cruise.

Unlike with most cruise line loyalty programs, you won't automatically keep your status forever with MSC Cruises. Once achieved, your status is good as long as you take a cruise at least once every 36 months. If you don't, not only will your points disappear, but your entire account will be erased, requiring you to re-enroll and start all over again.

That's the downside of the MSC Voyagers Club. However, the program also comes with one very big upside: MSC Cruises will let you status match your way to top-tier Diamond status based on your status level with any of more than two dozen other loyalty programs — not just those run by competing cruise lines but also those operated by Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton. It's very rare in the cruise world.

How much does an MSC Cruises voyage cost?

MSC Cruises is known for some of the most affordable ships at sea. It's not uncommon to find MSC Cruises voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from under $75 per person, per night, including all taxes and fees — at least in the offseason.

For instance, at the time of publication, four-night sailings from Miami to the Bahamas in September 2024 start at just $249 per person, not including taxes and fees of $100. That works out to just $87.25 per person, per night, with taxes and fees, for a package that includes your lodging, transportation and meals.

As you might expect, pricing for ships will generally be lower during offseason periods such as September, October and parts of November.

The timing of when you book can also matter. Cruises book up much further in advance than airplanes or hotels, and many cruisers will tell you the best pricing for any given sailing often is available when cruises first go on sale (which can be a good two years before a departure). Booking far in advance also gives you the best chance of getting your preferred cabin type and location on a ship.

Once on board an MSC Cruises ship, you'll pay extra for most drinks, extra-charge restaurants, spa services, shore excursions, internet and a few other amenities — unless you've paid up for a more inclusive package.

When pricing cabins, MSC Cruises offers one of four main "experiences," each of which comes with different inclusions and varying price tags. The basic "Bella" experience includes your room, dining in the main restaurants and buffet, and access to all the included features of the ship, such as kids programs and theater shows.

Note that if you book the Bella experience, you cannot select a specific cabin. You can only choose between the broad categories of inside, ocean-view or balcony cabin, and a cabin is later assigned to you.

One step up is the more expensive "Fantastica" experience, which adds room service and breakfast delivered to your cabin, priority choice of dinner sittings, access to additional kids activities and classes, and more. At this level and above, you can pick a specific cabin when booking.

With the even pricier "Aurea" experience, you'll get complimentary access to the spa's thermal area, priority boarding and other perks. The Aurea experience also comes with access to My Choice dining and an exclusive sun deck area that on many ships features an exclusive bar and hot tubs.

Then there's the MSC Yacht Club experience, mentioned above, which is the ultimate in onboard living. Even with its higher price tag, the MSC Yacht Club still provides great value for its wide range of perks, such as unlimited drinks in all MSC Yacht Club areas, including premium spirits and minibar items.

How to book

If you're sure you know what sort of cabin you want, on which ship, on which itinerary — and about a dozen other things — you can head over to the MSC Cruises website to book directly.

That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise (there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process: trust us) we recommend you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises. A good travel agent will quiz you about your interests, travel style and preferences, and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. They also can help if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage.

If you're sure MSC Cruises is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. You want someone who knows all about the line's various cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see them firsthand.

Whether you use a travel agent or not, make sure to maximize your purchase when paying for the cruise by using a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases . This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which offers 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit). There's also the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card , which earns 2 points per dollar spent on travel (and dining).

Bottom line

Long a major player in Europe, MSC Cruises is growing fast in North America with a lineup of big, new, amenity-filled ships.

If you're a megaresort lover, you'll feel right at home on MSC Cruises' new World, Meraviglia and Seaside Class vessels, which rival the biggest vessels of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian for their array of onboard amusements.

You'll also love their affordability. Among the world's biggest ships, they offer some of the lowest pricing. You'll be sharing your vacation with hordes of other people, of course — as many as 6,000 on some MSC Cruises vessels. However, even the biggest MSC Cruises ships have quiet nooks where you can escape the crowds.

Everything You Need To Know About MSC Cruises

Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • January 25, 2022

If MSC Cruises has its way, it’ll eventually be as well known in North America as brands like Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean.

MSC Divina at Ocean Cay

Although MSC is far better known in European markets, it has slowly but surely been grabbing the attention of American cruisers, especially since the splashy arrival of MSC Seaside back in 2017.

With prices that are often considerably lower than the competition and ships that have significantly raised the company’s profile, MSC is definitely making a splash with North American cruisers.

It’s worth noting, however, that the Swiss-based line has encountered a few growing pains along the way, especially in regard to the differing needs of an American audience.

MSC Seaside sailing

A Basic Introduction To MSC Cruises

Before we take a closer look at why MSC Cruises might — or might not — be right for you, let’s take a quick look at the history of the company.

Founded in Italy in 1989 as a part of the Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC Cruises has since become one of the world’s largest cruise companies (and the largest privately-held cruise operator).

Until relatively recently, their primary target was European cruisers, with minor forays into the North American market.

It was the aforementioned MSC Seaside that really changed things where the company’s efforts to penetrate the North American market were concerned.

The ship — which previously sailed year-round out of Miami — was specifically designed for North America, with the company heavily promoting Seaside to both American and Canadian cruisers.

After the cruise industry shutdown in 2020, MSC Cruises moved  Seaside  from Miami to Europe and South America.

Two ships are currently homeported in Miami: MSC Divina and MSC Seashore. For the first time ever, MSC is also sailing from Port Canaveral. Currently,  MSC Meraviglia  is operating voyages from the central Florida port.

A fourth ship,  MSC Seaview,  is spending the winter sailing in the Caribbean from Barbados and St. Maarten.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve

In addition to the ships that ply the waters of the Caribbean, MSC Cruises recently invested heavily in the construction and opening of its own private Bahamian island called Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

The island, which differs from the private islands of other lines because of its focus on the environment, includes a dock for one ship, pristine beaches, and many activities for guests to enjoy.

Is This the Right Cruise Line For You?

While MSC Cruises offers similar amenities to its rivals, it tends to be priced lower (sometimes significantly so).

As for the experience, there is a definite European influence and international flavor to MSC sailings, with announcements in several languages (English, Italian, Spanish, French) to accommodate the many guests from outside North America and food with a distinctive European flair.

Guests who sail MSC Cruises routinely comment on the European-inspired art and decor, thoughtful design of the ships, and connection to the sea the vessels offer.

On the other hand, a complaint which is sometimes heard is that that the crew is not as “friendly” as other lines, but this is probably related to the European ethos of the company which stresses the quality of service over what might be called a “feel good” approach to customer appreciation.

Consider the difference between a waiter at a casual American restaurant and a fine dining establishment in Rome, and you have an idea of what to expect.

What MSC’s Ships Have To Offer

During the busy winter season, MSC Cruises might have four or five ships sailing the turquoise Caribbean waters. Larger, newer ships such as the MSC Meraviglia and  MSC Seashore offer tons of onboard activities, easily comparable to the flashiest Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, or Carnival ships.

It’s worth noting that many of these activities come with an additional fee. This is one of the reasons we often say that when booking a cruise, make sure to look at the base fare and any expenses you’ll encounter along the way.

MSC Divina Freeport Bahamas

Slightly older vessels like the MSC Armonia and MSC Divina have been kept up well thanks to recent refurbishments; the Armonia was in late 2019, and the Divina was in 2016.

While smaller than the newest MSC ships, both the Armonia and Divina have a classic European feel and are generally well-regarded among those who prefer a smaller ship experience.

READ MORE: MSC Meraviglia Ship Review

Onboard entertainment varies by ship. On the MSC Meraviglia , the options include theater shows, a ropes course, and more bars than you could hope to drink from in a week.

MSC Armonia and MSC Divina offer classic review shows and the type of musical acts that will be familiar to cruisers of other lines, along with a good mix of bars and restaurants.

For kids, every MSC ship offers a splash pad and pool section along with age-appropriate kids clubs featuring a partnership with LEGO.

MSC Cruises pizza

Regarding where the ships go, MSC Cruises has done its homework when it comes to creating interesting itineraries for travelers. A full slate of Western Caribbean, Eastern Caribbean, and Bahamas sailings are offered, with most of the popular ports represented.

Most sailings range from three-night Bahamas getaways to two-week adventures.

What You Need To Know About MSC’s “Experiences”

sail away msc cruises port miami

When it comes to booking on an MSC ship, things are handled differently than on any other line sailing out of North America. MSC offers a variety of packages which they call “experiences.”

Each of the three levels — Bella, Fantastica, and Aurea — offers both different perks and price points. So what is the difference between them?

  • Bella:  This is the basic package, which includes your cruise fare and taxes, tap water, tea (tap) and coffee in the dining rooms, access to kids’ programs, and most onboard activities. This experience offers a guaranteed cabin, which means you cannot choose its location and are assigned your specific cabin closer to the sail date.
  • Fantastica:  This package is offered in cabins located on higher decks, including some ocean views, balconies, and interiors, and features some extra amenities, including room service.
  • Aurea:  The highest-end category is for those staying in a suite and includes discounts on spa treatments, as well as free access to the spa’s thermal suite.

Fantastica and Aurea also offer one free cruise change, which is applicable on either the cruise dates or the destination. The change needs to take place up to one month prior to departure for a new cruise that sails within three months of the original departure.

Aurea also offers flexible dining and access to a dining area specifically reserved for those classes. On most ships, Aurea guests have a dedicated outside space that is restricted to only guests at this level.

Occasionally, MSC Cruises offers specials in conjunction with the various levels, such as drink packages, wifi access, or other perks.

Because booking an “experience” is foreign to non-MSC cruisers, it’s worth consulting with a rep from the line or your travel advisor to ensure you understand exactly what you’re getting and how much it will cost.

MSC Divina stateroom cabin

It should be mentioned that MSC Cruises has done a great job with its Super Family Cabin, which is a way for larger groups to sail together at an affordable price.

Offered on the MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seaside, and MSC Seashore , these staterooms include a set of bunk beds, a king or two twins, a separate room with a fold-out couch, and two bathrooms! Some also offer additional features such as bathtubs (as opposed to a simple shower) and balconies.

What is the MSC Yacht Club?

MSC Meraviglia Outdoor Pool Yacht Club

The MSC Yacht Club is a ship-within-a-ship concept that allows guests to have access to their own secure area. This entitles guests to their own restaurant, pool, bar, lounge (with drink package included), their own elevators, and priority embarkation.

MSC ships that have the Yacht Club are MSC Grandiosa , MSC Bellissima ,  MSC Divina ,  MSC Fantasia ,  MSC Meraviglia ,  MSC Preziosa , MSC Seashore, MSC Seaside , MSC Seaview , MSC Splendida, and MSC Virtuosa .

Should you Consider MSC Cruises?

While they are still considered “the new kid” in the North American market, MSC Cruises is quickly gaining market share and mindshare among cruisers, thanks in no small part to fares that are often hundreds of dollars per person less than comparable sailings on their big-name competitors.

If you are ready for something a little different and willing to sacrifice some of the mass market appeals that come with other lines, then MSC Cruises is certainly something to consider.

Ocean Cay is a testament to their commitment to sustainability and offers unique experiences that simply can’t be found on any other cruise line’s private island.

MSC Meraviglia promenade

For families, MSC should be a top contender, not only due to those exciting Family Super cabins but also for their frequent Kids Under 11 Sail Free promotions, the LEGO partnership, range of on-deck activities, and commitment to helping families connect in new and exciting ways.

Ultimate guide: msc cruises drink package options.

' src=

As an experienced cruiser, I understand that selecting the perfect beverage package can significantly improve your onboard experience. This is why I’m presenting you with the ultimate guide to the drink package options offered by MSC Cruises.

From the Easy Package to the Premium Extra Package, MSC offers a range of choices for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. With detailed information on inclusions, limitations, and recommendations, as well as tips for making the most of your package, you’ll be able to decide which option is perfect for your drinking preferences and consumption habits.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • MSC offers a variety of drink packages, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic options.
  • The prices of the drink packages range from $30 to $88 per person, per day.
  • The packages have different inclusions and limitations, such as drink selection and access to specialty restaurants.
  • It is important to consider your drinking preferences, cruise duration, and individual consumption habits before purchasing a drink package.

Alcoholic Drink Packages

I’m considering purchasing the Easy Plus Package because it includes specialty restaurants and drinks up to $10 per glass. When it comes to drink package pricing, it’s important to consider the benefits that these packages offer.

With the Easy Plus Package, not only do you get the convenience of having your drinks included, but you also have the freedom to choose from a wide variety of beverages. From house wines to classic cocktails, this package allows you to indulge in your favorite drinks without worrying about the cost.

Additionally, the inclusion of specialty restaurants means that you can enjoy a delicious meal paired with your preferred libation. The Easy Plus Package truly offers great value for those who want to have a hassle-free and enjoyable drinking experience during their cruise.

Non-Alcoholic Drink Packages

The Non-Alcoholic Drink Packages offered by MSC include a variety of refreshing options such as soda, energy drinks, and alcohol-free cocktails. These packages are a great choice for those who prefer to abstain from alcohol or simply want to enjoy a wide range of non-alcoholic beverages during their cruise.

One of the benefits of opting for a non-alcoholic package is the cost-saving aspect. Compared to the alcoholic drink packages, the non-alcoholic options are generally more affordable.

Additionally, non-alcoholic packages offer a healthier alternative, allowing guests to stay hydrated and enjoy a variety of refreshing drinks without the effects of alcohol.

Whether you’re looking for a soda to quench your thirst or a delicious mocktail to sip on, MSC’s non-alcoholic drink packages have you covered.

Cost and Inclusions of Drink Packages

Pricing for the drink packages varies based on the duration of the cruise and the type of package selected. When comparing the prices of the MSC drink packages, it is important to consider the benefits of purchasing a drink package.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Drink Package Pricing Comparison:

The Easy Package is the most affordable option at $49 per person, per day.

The Easy Plus Package is priced at $64 per person, per day and includes drinks up to $10 per glass.

The Premium Extra Package, priced at $88 per person, per day, offers a wide selection of drinks up to $16 per glass.

Benefits of Purchasing a Drink Package:

Convenience: With a drink package, you can enjoy unlimited drinks without worrying about the cost.

Cost Savings: Purchasing a drink package can be more cost-effective than buying individual drinks throughout the cruise.

Variety: The different packages offer a range of drink options, allowing you to try new beverages and enjoy your favorites.

Additional Information on Drink Packages

When considering the drink packages, it’s important to note that there is no daily limit on drinks included with the packages. This is one of the advantages of purchasing a drink package with MSC Cruises. Unlike some other cruise lines, MSC does not impose a daily limit on the number of drinks you can enjoy.

This means that you can fully indulge in a wide variety of beverages throughout your cruise without any restrictions. Whether you prefer classic cocktails, premium brand drinks, or non-alcoholic options, MSC offers packages to suit every preference.

In comparison to other cruise lines’ drink packages, MSC’s offerings are relatively affordable and provide a generous selection of drinks. So, if you’re looking to enjoy unlimited beverages and maximize your cruise experience, purchasing an MSC drink package is definitely worth considering.

Choosing the Right Drink Package

As a passenger, it is important to consider your drinking preferences and habits before selecting the right drink package for your MSC cruise. The duration of your package will also play a role in your decision.

If you enjoy a variety of alcoholic beverages and plan to indulge throughout your cruise, the Premium Extra Package might be the best option for you. This package offers a wide selection of high-end drinks and cocktails.

On the other hand, if you prefer classic drinks and don’t need as much variety, the Easy Package could be more suitable.

Additionally, if you are a non-drinker or traveling with minors, there are non-alcoholic packages available.

Take the time to evaluate your preferences and the length of your cruise to ensure you choose the package that best fits your needs.

Types of MSC Drink Packages

I personally found the variety of drink packages offered by MSC to be appealing. When it comes to drink package options for families, MSC has you covered. They offer different packages to suit various preferences and budgets.

The benefits of purchasing a drink package are numerous. Not only does it provide convenience and peace of mind, but it can also save you money in the long run. MSC offers packages for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, ensuring that everyone in your family can find something they enjoy.

From the Easy Package, which includes basic drinks like water and coffee, to the Premium Package, which offers a wide selection of premium brand drinks and cocktails, there is something for everyone. Purchasing a drink package allows you to indulge in a variety of beverages throughout your cruise without worrying about the cost adding up.

It’s a great way to enhance your vacation experience and make the most of your time on board.

Pricing, Restrictions, and Tips for Drink Packages

The pricing for MSC’s drink packages varies depending on the duration of the cruise and the specific package chosen. When comparing drink package prices, it’s important to consider the value you will receive.

The Easy Package is generally the most affordable option, followed by the Easy Plus Package and the Premium Package. The Kids Package is usually priced lower than the adult packages. Purchasing drinks individually without a package can be more expensive in the long run.

It’s also worth noting that some cruise lines may have restrictions on the purchase of drink packages for cruises shorter than a certain duration. When evaluating the value of drink packages, consider your drinking preferences and habits. If you are not a big drinker, purchasing drinks individually may be more cost-effective.

Be sure to check the specific inclusions and exclusions of each drink package before making a decision.

Making the Most of Your Drink Package

When it comes to maximizing the value of your MSC drink package, there are a few key strategies to keep in mind.

One of the best ways to make the most of your package is by exploring the variety of drink options available in MSC’s Premium Extra Package. This package offers a wide selection of premium brand drinks and cocktails, allowing you to indulge in higher-end beverages throughout your cruise.

Additionally, don’t forget to take advantage of MSC’s private island, Ocean Cay. The drink package can be used on the island, so make sure to enjoy a refreshing cocktail or beverage while lounging on the pristine beaches.

Considerations Before Purchasing a Drink Package

Before purchasing a drink package, it’s important to carefully evaluate your drinking preferences and calculate the potential cost and value of the package based on your expected consumption.

MSC Cruises offers a range of drink packages, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. The pros of these packages include convenience, as you don’t have to worry about individual drink prices, and the ability to try a variety of drinks without breaking the bank.

However, there are also cons to consider, such as the limited selection in lower-tier packages and the requirement for everyone in the cabin to purchase the package.

When compared to other cruise lines, MSC’s drink packages are relatively affordable, but it’s important to do the math and consider your own drinking habits to determine if it’s worth it for you.

What’s Included and Not Included in Your Cruise Fare!

An image showcasing a cruise ship with a clear division

I can’t wait to set sail on the cruise vacation of my dreams!

But before I embark on this exciting adventure, I need to know exactly what’s included and not included in my cruise fare.

From the comfort of my cabin to the delicious food options and thrilling entertainment, I want to make sure I have all the information I need to plan my budget.

So, let’s dive in and explore what’s included and what’s not in my cruise fare!

  • Cabin is included in the fare but amenities vary depending on cruise line and cabin type.
  • Buffet offers a wide selection of international dishes, while specialty restaurants come at an additional cost.
  • Free shows and entertainment are included, but paid activities such as go-karts and simulated skydiving are available for an extra charge.
  • Gratuities, spa treatments, and extra activities like go-karts and roller coasters are not included in the cruise fare and require separate payment.

Cabin and Accommodations

The cabin is included in the fare, so I don’t have to worry about any extra charges for my room. It’s great to know that I can enjoy a comfortable and cozy space without any additional costs.

The cabin amenities vary depending on the cruise line and the type of cabin chosen. Typically, cabins come with standard features such as a bed, storage space, a private bathroom, and a television. Some higher-end cabins may offer additional amenities like a balcony, mini-fridge, or even a butler service.

As for room service options, many cruise lines offer 24-hour room service, allowing passengers to order food and beverages directly to their cabin. It’s a convenient option for those who prefer dining in the privacy of their own room.

Food and Dining Options

I love the variety of food options available on a cruise, from the buffet to the main dining room.

The buffet is a great option for those who want a wide selection of dishes to choose from. They usually offer a range of cuisines, including international dishes, salads, soups, and desserts. It’s a casual dining experience where you can try a little bit of everything.

On the other hand, specialty restaurants are a more upscale option. These restaurants often have a specific theme or cuisine, such as Italian, steakhouse, or seafood. While these restaurants come at an additional cost, they provide a more intimate and gourmet dining experience.

Whether you prefer the variety of the buffet or the elegance of the specialty restaurants, there are plenty of dining options to satisfy every palate on a cruise.

Entertainment and Activities

With a wide range of entertainment shows, activities, and movies, there is never a dull moment on a cruise ship. Here are some key things to know about the entertainment and activities on board:

Free shows: Cruise ships offer a variety of free entertainment shows, including Broadway-style performances, live music, comedy shows, and magic acts. These shows are included in the fare and provide great entertainment for guests of all ages.

Paid activities: While many activities on the ship are included in the fare, there are also some paid activities available for an additional charge. These can include go-karts, simulated skydiving, and even roller coasters. These activities offer a unique and thrilling experience for those looking for a little extra excitement on their cruise.

Additional Charges and Gratuities

When it comes to additional charges on a cruise, it’s important to be aware of the cost of specialty restaurants and gratuities. Specialty restaurants offer a more upscale dining experience and usually have a cover charge. These restaurants offer a variety of cuisines and are a great option for a special night out. Gratuities, on the other hand, are the service charges that are automatically added to your onboard account. These charges typically amount to around $15 per person, per day, and are distributed among the ship’s staff. It’s important to budget for these charges as they are not included in the cruise fare. Additionally, spa treatments and services are not included in the fare and also come with an additional cost. So, be sure to factor in these extra charges when planning your cruise budget.

Keywords: specialty restaurants, gratuities, spa treatments.

Extra Activities and Excursions

Go-karts, simulated skydiving, and roller coasters are some of the extra activities on a cruise that may require an additional charge. These paid activities provide an exciting and thrilling experience for passengers seeking adventure on their vacation. Cruise lines offer a variety of options to cater to different interests and age groups. From high-speed go-kart races to indoor simulated skydiving, these activities add an extra level of excitement to the onboard experience.

However, it is important to note that these activities are not included in the cruise fare and require separate payment. Additionally, when the ship docks at various ports, passengers have the opportunity to participate in shore excursions. These excursions, which are organized by the cruise line, offer a range of activities and experiences at the destinations visited, such as guided tours, water sports, and cultural explorations.

Similar to the paid activities onboard, shore excursions also require separate payment. It is advisable to plan and budget accordingly to enjoy these additional experiences during your cruise.

What Is Typically Included in a Cruise Fare?

When booking a Carnival Cruise, inclusions vary. Generally, the fare covers accommodation, dining, on-board entertainment, and access to amenities like pools and fitness centers. However, it’s important to check if alcohol, specialty dining, excursions, and gratuities are included or come at an additional cost.

Are There Any Additional Charges for Using the Gym on the Cruise Ship?

Yes, there may be additional charges for using the gym on the cruise ship. However, there are usually membership options available that allow guests to use the gym for free, just like in a resort.

Are Tender Boats Available for Free During Port Visits?

Yes, tender boats are available for free during port visits. They are included in the cruise fare and run the entire time the ship is in port. There are no additional fees for using them.

Do Specialty Restaurants on the Cruise Ship Require an Extra Charge?

Yes, specialty restaurants on the cruise ship require an extra charge. However, there are still plenty of included dining options. Onboard entertainment, such as daily shows and activities, is included in the fare.

Are Spa Treatments and Services Included in the Cruise Fare?

Spa treatments and services, like massages and facials, are not included in the cruise fare. They come with additional charges. However, the gym is free to use and offers great views.

Are There Any Additional Charges for Activities Like Go-Karts or Simulated Skydiving on the Ship?

Yes, there are additional charges for activities like go-karts and simulated skydiving on the ship. These are considered specialty activities and are not included in the cruise fare.

Everything You Need To Know About MSC Cruise Drink Packages

October 16, 2023

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a commission if you purchase through my links, at no extra cost to you. Please read  full disclosure  for more information.

Going on an MSC cruise and wanting to know everything about their drink package options? This post discusses each of MSC’s drink packages, generalized tips you need to know, if their drink packages are worth it and also includes a menu of their drink selections.

MSC cruise line is actively breaking into the North America cruise circuit. In doing so more and more people are looking into whether or not they should take a cruise on MSC.

With their competitive prices (Although I have heard they will be raising prices to match competitors so if you’ve been thinking about booking a cruise with MSC I would jump on it!) it is a great option for many who are seeing prices continue to rise on some of their favorite cruise lines or for anyone who just wants to try something new!

I personally took a chance and tried MSC for the first time in May 2023 and absolutely loved it. I cruised on MSC Seaside for 7 nights out of Port Canveral to Nassau, Ocean Cay, Cozumel and Costa Maya.

Unlike other cruise lines who may only offer an alcoholic and non alcoholic drink package, MSC has several levels to their drink packages at all different price points. This is a great selling point that I wish more cruise lines offered.

Not everyone needs every option in the world and would like to have a drink package at a lower cost that still gives them a few choices.

This blog post will answer all of your questions on MSC drink packages, leaving you an expert on the subject so you will know exactly what package is best for you on your next cruise.

This post is all about MSC cruise drink packages.

If you’re going on an MSC cruise and definitely want the drink package, first and foremost you should see if they are offering their FREE DRINKS AND WIFI promo. It is not always offered/isn’t offered in every country from what I hear but if it is, it’s 100% the way to go.

Getting the FREE DRINKS AND WIFI promo while booking is going to be cheaper than if you add a drink package after booking. (Most likely, haven’t seen a time it’s not cheaper. Only exception may be the minors package.)

This promo is going to vary in price based on several things: ship, sailing length, capacity, and I’m sure a couple other factors MSC offcials know.

@yourstrulychelsea I was beyond excited to save $500 on our upcoming cruise #greenscreen #cruise #cruisedrinkpackage #drinkpackage #over21tiktok #cruiselife #cruisetips #cruisehacks #msc #msccruises #howtosavemoneyonacruise #cruisemusthaves #cruiseessentials #disneycruise #royalcarribeancruise ♬ original sound – CHELSEA CRUISES

When I went on MSC Seaside in May of 2023 I was able to get the drinks and wifi add on for $180/person for my 7 night sailing.

* It is important to note when they say “FREE DRINKS AND WIFI” it is not actually free but offering you the add ons for a discount.

Compared to other cruise line’s who would offer a drink package for $700+ for that length of time and that wouldn’t include wifi as well, it was a GREAT DEAL.

For my sailing after booking, wifi was available for $80/device. If you factored in that price (which isn’t an exact science I understand, just using it as a possible example) that would make my drink package only $100 for 7 nights!!

That’s a little over $14/day.  That’s the price of one drink on Royal Caribbean before gratuity.

If you do book the FREE DRINKS AND WIFI PROMO it is going to give you their Easy Plus drink package which I will go into detail about what that includes below. In my opinion this is good enough for most people and you will not need to upgrade.

If you do want the Premium Extra package you can pay the difference in cost from the Easy Plus.

MSC Cruise Drink Packages:

1. easy package:.

If you’re looking to save some money or are not picky and are fine with the most basic drinks, MSC’s easy drink package might be the one for you.

This package includes:

-Selected classic or international cocktails -Non-alcoholic cocktails and mixed drinks -Spirits (whisky, vodka, gin, rum, tequila, brandy – one brand per type) -House wines (red, white, sparkling, rosè) -Draft beer Heineken and bottled beer Heineken* -Soft drinks from the fountain, canned soft drinks, fruit juices by the glass and bottled -Bottled Mineral Water -Classic hot drinks (espresso, cappuccino, caffèlatte, hot tea, hot chocolate)

2. Easy Plus Package:

The Easy Plus package is included in MSC’s FREE DRINKS AND WIFI PROMO. This package is the perfect option for your every day cruiser. Some may want to upgrade but most will find this package has everything they need.

This is the package I had for my MSC cruise and think it’s a great option with a wide variety of drinks. I normally don’t get the drink package because of the cost but for the price I was offered, I couldn’t turn it down. Besides alcoholic drinks, I loved the cocktail and latte options I could get.

The biggest help was being able to get 1 liter water bottles to take back to my room at night.

-Variety of frozen and classic cocktails -Fresh fruit cocktails and protein shakes -Well spirits, liqueurs and cordials -Variety of draught and bottled beers -Non-alcoholic cocktails and all non alcoholic drinks -Bottled Mineral Water -Wide range of hot drinks -10% discount on bottles of wine purchased on board -Selection of wines by the glass

@yourstrulychelsea This is an estimate, not exact numbers for everything. Let me know in the comments if you think this is cheap or expensive in the comments! #greenscreen #cruise #cruiselife #cruisetips #cruisetipsandtricks #cruisehacks #vacation #royalcarribean #royalcarribeancruise #carnivalcruise #carnivalcruiseline #virgincruise #virgincruiseline #norwegiancruise #disneycruise #disneycruiseline #ocean #cruisequestions #cruisequestionsanswered #qanda #cruisefacts #goingonacruise #crusingtok #cruisetok #cruisetiktok #cruisetiktoks #cruiseessentials #cruisefood ♬ Confidence – Lux-Inspira

3. Premium Extra Package:

If you want top shelf options on your cruise, the Premium Extra package will be the choice you want. If you did get the free drinks and wifi promo you can upgrade from Easy Plus to Premium Extra for a fee.

-Wide Selection of Premium and International cocktails -Non-alcoholic cocktails and all non-alcoholic drinks -Fresh fruit and protein cocktails -Premium brand spirits, liqueurs and cordials -Wide selection of fine wine by glass -Champagne by glass -Wide variety of draft and bottled beer -Bottled Mineral Water -Wide selection of classic and specialty hot drinks -25% discount on purchased of bottled wine and champagne

4. Alcohol-Free Package:

If you don’t drink alcohol but still want to indulge in delicious mocktails, sodas, lattes and more then you should consider the Alcohol-Free package.

-Non-alcoholic cocktails -Fresh fruit and protein cocktails -Energy drinks -Sodas -Flavored water -Wide range of hot drinks -Soft serve ice cream

Looking for cruise essentials for your next vacation? Check out my Vacation/Cruise Must Haves list on my Amazon storefront! It is pinned in the top four on my page.

5. minors package .

This package is exactly the same as the Alcohol-Free package but is specifically for minors. If you’re cruising with your child and buy a drink package for yourself, they will be required to get the Minors package.

-Non-alcoholic cocktails -Fresh fruit and protein cocktails -Energy drinks -Flavored water -Soda by glass and bottle -Wide range of hot drinks -Soft serve ice cream

No matter what drink package you choose, MSC offers a wide variety for a multitude of needs.

Generalized facts about MSC’s drink packages and tips:

  • Gratuties are already included in the price of the drink package
  • Brands may vary by sailing
  • MSC drink packages are available on all ships except sailings in South Africa and China
  • Only Easy Plus and Premium Extra drink packages can be used at specialty dining restaurants
  • If you have booked MSC’s Yacht Club it will automatically come with their Premium Extra drink package
  • It is 15% cheaper to purchase a drink package before your cruise compared to when you are already on it
  • MSC unlike other cruise lines does not let you bring alcohol on the ship
  • Drink package can be used on MSC’s private island: Ocean Cay Marine Reserve

When I cruised on MSC Seaside in May of 2023 I also took pictures of their drink menu that was offered on the ship. I have included these pictures below.

Are MSC Cruise Line’s drink packages worth it?

After having a drink package on for my MSC cruise I would say their drink package is definitely worth it! Especially if you can score the FREE DRINKS AND WIFI PROMO.

MSC offers a huge variety of drink options that go across all of their different package options.

Even if you don’t buy a drink package for your cruise, they have several options that are reasonably priced. Particularly if you’ve been looking at other cruise lines that don’t offer any cocktails for under $10.

Starlink on cruise ships: Which lines have faster internet connections on board?

N o matter how far your cruise roams, staying connected to the internet can be as important for some cruisers as oxygen and water. Whether you're keen on live-streaming penguins from your balcony on an Antarctica cruise, catching up on your favorite TV series or hopping on a Zoom call in the middle of the Pacific, connectivity and high-speed access are now considered essentials when cruising.

In the past, cruise lines struggled to keep up with the demand for seamless connectivity at sea. In the middle of an ocean, ships had to rely on satellite systems that could be unreliable, prohibitively expensive and maddeningly slow. Satellite systems allotted only so much broadband for each ship, and every ship carried thousands of people, each with multiple devices.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

A better solution was required. Enter Starlink, the world's first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet. Part of Elon Musk's SpaceX program, Starlink now provides many cruise ships with bandwidth that can support streaming, online gaming, video calls and more worldwide. Starlink debuted in 2019 and has quickly revolutionized how hundreds of cruise ships provide internet access, boosting connectivity and capacity as ships roam the world.

Will your next cruise offer landlike Wi-Fi speeds? Here is everything you need to know about Starlink on cruise ships.

How does Starlink work?

Compared to standard communications satellites, which orbit from 22,000 miles away, Starlink's thousands of satellites orbit the atmosphere from about 340 miles above the Earth's surface. With much closer proximity to Earth, Starlink's data connections offer stronger and faster connections and provide the opportunity for more bandwidth on cruise ships.

The coverage of the Starlink satellites is extensive and growing, with more than 5,400 satellites currently in orbit and plans in future years to reach up to 42,000 satellites in orbit at once. Traditional satellite networks have a much more limited fleet and reach, especially in some of the ocean's most remote areas. Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation, with near-complete coverage of all the world's oceans and waterways.

The Starlink system is affixed to ships as a series of flat panels positioned on upper decks, replacing the now antiquated domes often placed near the ship's funnel and radar masts.

Starlink's website estimates download speeds that range from 40 to over 200 Mbps and upload speeds that come in at 8 to more than 25 Mbps, with a latency of less than 99 milliseconds. These are wide-ranging estimates that don't factor in cruise ship-based throttling, cruise ship capacity, global positioning and the costs and challenges of outfitting a cruise ship with bow-to-stern Wi-Fi connectivity.

The industrial-strength steel frames and fireproof materials used throughout the ship make a strong, consistent signal throughout a cruise ship an industry-wide challenge. There will be patches on a ship, regardless of which line you're sailing, where you'll find a weaker signal. Signals are often at their strongest in the main public gathering areas.

Similar to traditional satellites, severe weather can be a factor in Starlink connections while at sea. Intense storms can bring temporary service interruptions or reduced speeds, while heavy rain or snowfall can cause signal attenuation, which might cause a brief loss of connectivity.

Cruises with Starlink
