 CAMARINES SUR TRAVEL GUIDE

Camarines Sur Tourist Spot: Sabitang-Laya, Caramoan by Tuderna

CAMARINES SUR TOURIST SPOTS| TRAVEL GUIDE

Camarines Sur Tourist Spots is a list of various destinations of the place.

Camarines Sur: The Adventure and Sports Capital of the Philippines

At 45 minutes away by flight or equivalent travel time of 10 to 12 hours by bus, Camarines Sur, the largest province in both land area and population in the Bicol province, is not necessarily an easy destination to get into from Metro Manila. Yet, despite this level of distance, the province managed to become one of the country’s rising star in tourism that saw its own and the country’s record being broken almost 9 years ago in 2010.

At the time, three of the country’s most visited places were still Metro Manila, Cebu, and Boracay respectively, based on the overall number of individuals doing the visit. Camarines Sur, on the other hand, was gathered at 2.3 million, a majority of which is local and is a rise of 49% at nearly 1.6 million a year before, according to Inquirer.net.

Camarines Sur’s prominence as a tourist destination saw it resurging sometime in 2018 at the heat of the roadblock to Boracay due to rehabilitation efforts. Although its distance from Boracay, too, is many kilometers away to easily be considered an easy alternative, it did not hamper the tourists’ interest from choosing it as a viable option in lieu of Aklan’s treasured site.

Knowing Camarines Sur as both a province and an attractive tourist destination, a few areas in the region defined the influx of tourist visit—the city of Naga and Pili, and the rugged Caramoan, as well as its offshore islands.

Camarines Sur Tourist Spots | Things to Do

Camarines Sur as part of the Bicol region is enough to make you feel excited about the holidays or the vacation season. Allow me to share with you some places to visit to give you tidbits of tips and tricks.

Culture Trip at Naga City [ Camarines Sur Tourist Spots]

While learning the culture of the city people of Naga may not be the primary reason for tourist visit in the region, much of the happening in this part of Camarines Sur is indeed centered around that. Essentially a “culture trip” aspect of the Camsur adventure, the city is a site to the region’s icons such as the varying depiction of architecture rooted in religion, the diverse museums that are scattered around the city, and equally as important, the revered effigy of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia.

Sports Adventure at Pili

It is hard to describe Camarines Sur as a tourist destination without pointing to its capital city which is also a site for the famed and world-class Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC), touted as the “best wakeboarding park in the world.”

The popularity of wakeboarding alone in the region is such, a House Bill aimed at declaring the province as a “Wakeboarding Capital of the Philippines” was approved in December last year.

Island Hop Across the Caramoan Islands [ Camarines Sur Tourist Spots]

Located at the bottom part of Camarines Sur, this 2nd class municipality is filled with different natural adventures and spots.

Caramoan is known for its uneven terrain, but at the same time, many unique sites that can be traveled by foot. But if there are places that make a trip to this underdeveloped region a worthy journey close to the sea, it has got to be the nearby offshore islands which bear the namesake of the land.

Yet, with uniformity as not the central theme to this tiny archipelago in the ocean, island hopping across the many islands of Caramoan is never dull, rather offers enough exciting dynamics with every migration.

Basilica of Our lady of Penafrancia [ Camarines Sur Tourist Spot]

The image of Our lady of Penafrancia is a wooden statue that is originated from Spain. As the patroness of Bicol, they hold a lot of feast and festivities throughout the year. The neoclassical architectural design of the façade of it is also something to see.

Consocep Mountain Resort [ Camarines Sur Tourist Spot ]

Trekking that will lead to three scenic falls, the Kawa-kawa, Tumaguiti, and Bulalacao fall. The trekking activity may take some hard work and sweat but the view along with the bath time is very refreshing and satisfying. If I may also suggest, better to head here with co-adults since the children may not be into this kind of trekking activity yet.

Itbog Twin Falls [ Camarines Sur Tourist Spot ]

The lush green background of the flowing 60-feet falls is genuinely a picturesque scene. The water is coming from Mt. Isarog, and it offers a fantastic view as it showers down to the basin part. I highly recommend that you set-up a picnic here for it will undoubtedly be fun.

Haciendas De Naga Resort [ Camarines Sur Tourist Spot ]

A place that is accredited by the National Golf Association of the Philippines like this one is a world-class experience; it has a zoo, adventure park, resort, nature park, and a wave pool! I urge you to spend the rest of the day here, and I know that you will never run out of the activity to try out.

Sabang Beach [ Camarines Sur Tourist Spot ]

The paradise-like view and adventure at Sabang beach will leave you speechless. The sunny weather matched with the picturesque view of the sea and the coastal area will make you feel that you’re really in a small paradise here on earth. You can also head to the Old Moro watchtower and have a view of the Mayon Volcano.

Isarog National Park

Heading here will entail some hiking, but the rappelling on the waterfalls or the cliff jumping will surely bring out the adventurous side of you! I urge you to come here with your brave spirit, and I know that you will never regret trying these activities.

Panicuason Hot Springs and Adventure Park [ Camarines Sur Tourist Spot ]

The natural hot and cold, hot springs found in the area along with the other relaxing activities will make you feel at home in this park. You can even try a zip line activity, biking, Tarzan swing, and a lot of more fun adventures! Spend the rest of the day here for you to fully maximize all the activities.

Camarines Sur merely is famous for everything! From people, food, and places to visit. In as much as I would like to give you a lot of information on this list, I know that this article will not be enough to provide justice to the beauty of the place. Come here and experience it fully! Have a Happy Trip!

Top 10 Tourist Spots in Camarines Sur

Table of Contents

A s the largest province in the Bicol Region of Luzon, Camarines Sur does not disappoint. The province has several beaches, waterfalls, mountains, and a generally relaxing and laid-back atmosphere compared to seaside destinations like Siargao or La Union. It also has lesser-known historical churches and landmarks, but just like other provinces in the Philippines, Camarines Sur has its own charm.

Top Ten Places to Visit in Camarines Sur

The climate here is very tropical. The peak seasons are summertime, and the influx of tourists decreases during the rainy season (usually from July to September) and gradually increases again from October onwards. However, regardless of the season, there is plenty to see in this unexploited and quaint province of Camarines Sur. Here are some of the tourist spots you can visit in Camarines Sur:

1. Lake Buhi

Lake Buhi

Lake Buhi is recognized as the source of the smallest commercially harvested fish in the world, the Sinarapan. A huge portion of the province’s local industry is agricultural and fishing. Although most towns have their own fisheries or plantations, Lake Buhi spotlights the entire province. If you can’t go fishing here, you can always go on a short boat ride and appreciate the fresh air and the view of the not-so-distant mountain of Iriga.

2. Mt. Iriga

Mt. Iriga

Also known as Mt. Asog, Mt. Iriga is an active volcano about a kilometer away from Lake Buhi. It’s already a wonderful sight to behold from afar, and up close, Mt. Iriga proves to be more than just for the eyes. Although it is labeled as an active volcano, the last time it erupted was in 1642, and it has not had any visible volcanic activity since then. This is why its crater is covered with thick layers of trees and vegetation, and hiking along the trail will give you a fantastic view of it.

3. Mt. Isarog National Park

ATV Adventure in Mount Isarog National Park

This inactive volcano was declared a national park in 1938 by the national government and is the highest rainforest mountain in Southern Luzon. The way up the summit is not your ordinary ten to twenty-minute afternoon hike. The way up can take hours, and all hikers are prohibited from hiking up and down within the same day to avoid accidents on the way down. On the way, you will see various types of birds, insects, a few faunas, and lots and lots of grass. Previous hikers do leave trails because it is a protected area, so you will have to make your own!

4. Malabsay Falls

Malabsay Falls by Red Envolope Photos

If you’re intimidated by the trek that Mt. Isarog poses, Malabsay Falls, a relatively short hike from Mt. Isarog National Park’s entrance, is a great alternate route. The waters of Malabsay can get very cold because the water comes directly from the inactive volcano’s peak, so be sure to be prepared for the temperature. Before entering, you must pay a small fee (Php 20 to 50). This also applies to Mt. Isarog.

5. Basilica of Our Lady of Peñafrancia

Basilica of Our Lady of Peñafrancia

The City of Naga is often called the Pilgrim City of Bicol. This Basilica is the only one of its kind in the whole region, so it attracts hundreds of local and foreign tourists. The church’s construction started in 1976 but was only completed in 1981. Though relatively small compared to other churches in Luzon, it has high ceilings and stained glass windows that have been well-preserved. Inside is the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.

6. Lahuy Island

Lahuy Island

If you’re a fan of nature, beaches, and tranquility, you’ll be pleased to know that Lahuy Island has all those three combined. Lahuy Island is about 10 kilometers long and 3 km wide, with crystal clear waters and cream-white sands. Bordering the beach are thick forests. Getting here requires a long boat ride from the neighboring island or central Caramoan town.

7. Matukad Island

Matukad Island in Caramoan

Aside from being the perfect beach island getaway, Matukad also has rock formations that you can marvel at and climb on. This one of the most famous islands in Caramoan and Camarines Sur’s entirety can get crowded during peak seasons, usually from April to June. The island also owes some of its fame because it is where the local reality TV show “Survivor” was filmed. In 2016, the entire island was temporarily closed for this.

8. Our Lady of Peace Grotto Shrine Park

The Lady of Peace Grotto enshrines a 26-foot tall statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is considered the biggest and tallest one in the Philippines. The statue is pure white and stands in the middle of a piece of a platform with no roof, making it look like it is glowing under the sun. At night, the statue is lighted to guide the fishermen. Getting to the statue requires climbing almost 530 steps, so be prepared. It is said that the monument can grant three wishes.

9. Lahos Island

Lahos Island via Tripadvisor

Hop on a 10-minute boat ride from Paniman Beach in Caramoan and prepare to take a picture of the massive limestone formations on the way. You will probably wonder how the heavy limestone rocks leading to Lahos Island float delicately on the blue waters. While Lahos is not as large as Matuklad, it boasts very shallow and clear waters, and you can swim under some of the protruding karst formations! Snorkeling, swimming, or simply sitting on the sand will make you enjoy this secluded island like your own.

10. Nalalata Falls

Nalalata Falls by Jovial Wanderer

What’s an excellent way to chill after a long hike? Swim in Nalalata Falls’ cool waters, and get a natural massage from the pressured falling water. What’s a better way to chill after a long hike? Rappelling! The rock behind the waterfalls has been smoothened out due to the continuous flow of water, and the flat, 50-foot-high surface serves as an excellent spot for rappelling while at the same time getting to bathe. Some guides can assist you, and rentable equipment is at the entrance. Compared to Malabsay Falls, Nalalata is a relatively easy hike once you drop off at the starting point.

Binurong point

It is located in Baras, Catanduanes, and it actually has an interesting history about the origins of its name. Binurong Point was derived from the word “buro” which refers to the process of preserving food with the use of salt and vinegar. It is said that Binurong Point was traditionally the place where locals go to preserve the fishes that they caught. Now, it is a breathtaking paradise where tourists can go to simply relax and admire one of God’s greatest creations.

9. Daraga Church

Facade of Daraga Church in Albay, Bicol

Daraga Church sits on top of a hill overlooking Mount Mayon Volcano and is considered a religious landmark in Legazpi, Albay. A must-visit for first-time visitors in Bicol's regional center, walking down its halls feels like a short journey through history, religion, and design.

The church was originally named Nuestra Señora de la Porteria (Our Lady of the Gate) Parish Church and first established as a settlement by people relocating from Cagsawa after a major eruption of the Mayon Volcano. In 1772, the Spanish government granted permission to build the religious structure with the intention of fostering a new community in the south of Cagsawa.

The present church was built in Barangay Santa Maria under the orchestration of Franciscan priests in 1773 as a replacement for the old Cagsawa Church after it was devastated by a series of volcanic eruptions.

Today, this historic icon is a part of many Legazpi City tours for those who wish to get to know more about the Albay province capital during their visit.

Tourists float on rafts on Sumlang Lake near Mayon Volcano

If you're looking to witness 360-degree views of Mayon Volcano without the hassle of tourist crowds, Sumlang Lake is your safest bet. A calm and relaxing destination to travel around, this enchanting attraction boasts an unobstructed panorama of the world-renowned conically shaped volcano.

However, this atmospheric beauty wasn't always the stunning landmark tourists visit today. The lake was once pervaded by water lilies, volcanic debris, and filthy waters for years until the residents held a bayanihan (communal work) initiative to rehabilitate the 14-hectare body of water. The effort has paid off; it is now a famous rendezvous for couples and small group tours.

Hidden in the outskirts of Legazpi, the lake sits on the Albay Agri Ethno Eco Village in Camalig town and is accessible via jeep from the city center. Don’t forget to try riding on a traditional bamboo raft while enjoying the beautiful scenery Albay has to offer. It's also home to Socorro's Lakeside Restaurant and Grill, one of the best restaurants in Albay .

They are also closely monitored by the local government and only allow seasonal sightings and interactions from November to July to ensure its long-term sustainability.

View of Mayon Volcano from the Cagsawa Ruins park

In 1814, Mayon Volcano recorded its most violent eruption, completely burying the entire town of Cagsawa by fast-flowing volcanic matter, except for the belfry. But unlike any other beautiful place in the Philippines, this once lively town had to go through such tragedy for it to be one of the most popular Albay tourist spots in Daraga..

Set against the magnificent backdrop of its creator, Cagsawa Ruins Park is declared a national cultural treasure that brings visitors closer to the volcano. The site is just a short drive away from Daraga proper, and once you’ve arrived, several exhilarating Mayon Volcano tours await you, including the Mayon ATV tour around the foothills of Mount Mayon as well as awe-inspiring landscapes in the area.

Overview: Bicol Region

Why Visit Bicol?

Bicol region is rich in tourist spots and adventure activities. The region is composed of six provinces – Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes and Masbate Island. With so many places to visit every backpacker will be delighted to visit each province.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

According to wikipedia the region has recently seen a revival in its tourism industry, due to the popularity of Mayon Volcano, the new CamSur Water Sports Complex, whale shark spotting, among others, which consequently increased the number of upscale resorts in the region.

The region owed its beauty from its long span of colonial history and of course the peninsula’s natural wonders. There are lots of fun activities to do in the region. Every water sports lovers can do as scuba diving in Catanduanes or visit the CamSur Water Sports Complex. As for nature lovers the magnificent conical shape Mayon Volcano stands proud as the background of each city surrounding it. Or one can swim with the whale sharks in Sorsogon. For the fan of history and old style architectures like me Naga is the place to be.

Our Bicol Experience

We went to Bicol for vacation holiday. I was graciously accepted by a group of 10 elementary teachers to join them. (Sabit lang hehe) The trip wasn’t that planned so when we reached Cubao Bus Terminal we were shocked by the mob of people waiting for buses to going to Bicol. We failed to anticipate the flock of people on holiday season. (Actually I did but they were the once who build the IT, so I am not in control hehe) After an hour or 2 of waiting we were able to secure a bus seat for 12 people, yes we were 12 in the group. The bus leaved at 11PM We reached Polangui, Albay at around 10AM and we were hostibly accepted by my friend’s co teacher parents. We rested and eat and planned to tour the Mayon the next day.

The next day we hired a jeep to tour us in Mayon area and Legaspi City.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

Our fist stop was Tiwi – most of them attended the mass since it was a Sunday. As for me and my friend Kuya Allan, because we were not a Catholic, we toured Tiwi Plaza and Tiwi Municipal Hall.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

The jeep that we hired traversed the east side of Mayon going to Legaspi since it was more accessible from where we were.

In Legaspi we visited the Embarcadero de Legaspi a premier waterfront development in the Legazpi City harbor.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

We didn’t tour the city center. Maybe because I’m with the tourist who do not want to walk around the city and feel the locality or maybe because it was already pass 11am and it is time for lunch.  We ate our packed lunch in Cagsawa Ruins and failed to see the conical shape of Mayon Volcano.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

Next we headed to Kawa-Kawa Hill in Ligao City. The hill is famous for its religious destination because of the larger than life Stations of the Cross.

I decided to go by my self on day 2. I had planed to ride the Bicol express the night of Monday (day2) – Naga-Manila Route. Since the departure was still at 6:00PM I still had time to go around Legaspi City and Naga City. I left Polangui at around 9am and reached Legaspi at around 10am. Transportation in Legaspi is organized every jeep, bus, vans and even tricycle stops at the Terminal Station at the back of Gaisano Mall.  From the terminal I took a jeep going to Daraga and went down to the Capitolyo. I just walk around the Albay Provincial, the Legaspi City Hall and St. Gregory the Great Cathedral.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

Then I took a jeep going to Daraga Church or the Nuestra Senora de la Porteria Church for some picture takings before going to Linon Hill with is about 10-15 minutes by jeep. I took a tricycle going there.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

After Lignon Hill I proceeded to Legaspi Terminal Station to take a van going to Naga City. Travel time took 2 hours. Do not take a bus if you are rushing. Buses make stop to get passengers.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

Just like in Legaspi City, Naga City also has organized terminal system in front and side of SM City Naga. I walk around row of houses beside the rail to reach the PNR Naga station. I bought tickets first before touring Naga City for 2 hours.  From the terminal station I walked to reach the major road I am seeing to ask someone where in the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral. But when I saw a busy area with a “Centro Naga” arch I headed there and the city tour began.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

I have visited the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, Ateneo de Naga, Naga City Hall and SM Naga before proceeding to PNR Naga Station.

tourist spots in bicol camarines sur

All in all I spend 3 days in Bicol region. Grrrrr… 3 days stay couldn’t justify the beauty of the region. I will definitely come back there and tour the whole region.

What is the famous festival in Camarines Sur?

geographic-faq

As an Ecotourism Specialist, I have had the opportunity to explore various destinations around the world. One region that has always fascinated me is Bicol, particularly Camarines Sur. This province is not just known for its beautiful landscapes, but also for its vibrant and colorful festivals. One of the most famous festivals in Camarines Sur is the Kaogma Festival.

The Kaogma Festival is the biggest festival in Camarines Sur, thanks to the efforts of the Villafuertes. This festival has gained popularity over the years and has become a major attraction for both locals and tourists. It is a celebration of culture, heritage, and unity. During this festival, the streets come alive with colorful parades, street dancing, and cultural performances. It is truly a sight to behold.

But the Kaogma Festival is not the only festival that Camarines Sur is known for. The region is also home to several other religious and cultural celebrations. One of the most prominent religious festivals in Bicol is the festival honoring the feast day of Our Lady of Penafrancia. This festival includes a fluvial procession along the Naga River, which is a truly breathtaking experience.

Another important festival in Bicol is the Tinagba Festival. This festival is a tradition of the first harvest offering, which coincides with the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. It is a way for the Bicolanos to thank the gods for the bountiful harvest and to seek their favor for the coming year. The Tinagba Festival is a colorful and lively celebration that showcases the rich agricultural heritage of the region.

In the town of Pili, Camarines Sur, the Cimarrones Festival is held every October 24. This festival is a cultural and religious celebration that honors the cimarrones, an indigenous group that opposed colonization during the Spanish period. It is also a fiesta of San Rafael Arcangel, the patron saint of the town.

Apart from these festivals, the Bicol region also hosts the Kasanggayahan Festival. This month-long celebration brings together the festivals of the different provinces in the region. It is a showcase of the rich heritage and culture of Bicol, with performers from various provinces demonstrating graceful and rhythmic cultural performances on the streets.

Bicol is not just known for its festivals, but also for its deep-rooted traditions. The Bicolanos hold strong beliefs in God, the soul, and life after death. They have annual rituals like the pabasa, tanggal, fiestas, and flores de mayo. These traditions are a testament to the rich culture and heritage of the region.

While most of the festivals in Bicol have religious origins, there are also non-religious celebrations like the Ibalong Festival in Legazpi City, Albay. This festival is based on the Ibalong Epic and celebrates the story of three legendary heroes accompanied by Ibalong. It is a showcase of the region’s history and cultural heritage.

In Camarines Norte, the Bantayog Festival is celebrated every April. This historical festival pays tribute to the heroism of Jose Rizal and local patriots who took part in the Daet revolt in 1898. It is a time to remember and honor their sacrifices for freedom.
