Trek Marlin 5 Review: The Best Entry-Level Mountain Bike Around

I reviewed the entry-level Trek Marlin 5 bike and compared it to similar bikes - how did it fair?

As an experienced rider, I know what it takes to make a good bike, whether that's a top-of-the-range road bike or an entry-level mountain bike .

Overall I found the Trek Marlin 5 to have plenty of positives, including hydraulic disc brakes and Shimano derailleurs - honestly, it doesn't stop there!

For a more in-depth look, continue reading my Trek Marlin 5 review!

Table of Contents

Full Specification

Key features, alpha silver aluminum frame.

Trek Marlin 5 comes with an impressive alloy frame and things are kept tidy with the cables being internally routed.

For an entry-level bike, this is most surprising (but also welcomed!). It is rare to see internally routed cables. I love it, it makes the bike look sleek and it stops the cables from collecting dirt and becoming damaged.

SR Suntour XCE 28 Suspension Fork

It comes with 100mm of travel suspension so when faced with rougher terrain, it excels. There isn't a moment when things feel too demanding for the Marlin 5 thanks to the SR Suntour XCE 28.

Bontrager Arvada Saddle

Trek appears to like to kit their bikes out with Bontrager components and you won't hear me complaining! This saddle is there to give you comfort on long days riding and it works well for the commuter too!

Shimano Tourney 21 Speed Drivetrain

It's common to see Shimano Tourney components at this price point. The quality is good and you have options!

You can either choose between a 3 x front derailleur or if you wish to reduce weight, you can opt for a 1 x Shimano Tourney at the front.

Which one should you choose?

Choosing the 3x will give you greater flexibility but more to think about. The 1x system will reduce the number of gears but allows you to spend more time focusing on your riding.

I favor 1x systems for their simplicity. When you're mountain biking, needing to changing the big ring can be one thing too many to get used to, especially if this is your entry-level bike and therefore your first!

If you're looking where the bike could be upgraded in the future then it could be the Shimano Tourney TY300 parts. Whilst they are decent and they are certainly a fantastic starting point, there are better options out there. A small upgrade in the future could see you finding it easier to climb hills.

Tektro HD-275 Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Hydraulic disc brakes on an entry-level bike? Trek has nailed it.

For beginner riders out there, hydraulic disc brakes are (for many, not all), the best type of braking system there is.

A slight touch on the brake levers is all you need to get a response...you don't get that from mechanical discs or rim brakes.

I came to fully appreciate hydraulic disc brakes going down Coll de sa Batalla for the first time, where I gripped on like my life depended on (it felt it did).

Since then. No turning back for me, there's only one form of brake system for me!

Bontrager XR2 27.5/29 x 2.2/2.0” Tires

Another Bontrager component!

These tires are of brilliant quality and they excel on mountain roads as well as gravel.

A downside to them is that they don't perform as well when things get muddy.

Wheel Sizes

There are different wheel sizes depending on the bike size you get.

The XS frame comes with 27.5" wheels.

Whereas, anything above that frame size gets 29" wheels.

At 5'4 in height, a lot of manufacturers would like to see me on 27.5" wheels, however, I ride 29ers on my MTB. I find this to be more comfortable and I don't feel hindered by having larger wheels.

What I'm saying is, test some bikes out, get a feel for what you like. Rules are there to be broken!

As I briefly touched upon earlier, the Marlin 5 comes with an alpha silver aluminum frame.

An alloy frame is a popular choice within this price bracket as it doesn't add extra weight to the bike as a steel frame would but it provides a good level of durability for a mountain bike.

Whilst you do get a good amount of durability, you have to factor in that this is a bike on a budget and it can't take on everything. It isn't designed for jumping so this is something to keep in mind if you're wanting a bike for serious trails.

All of the cables are internally stored in the bike, helping it to have a cleaner, more stylish look as well as improve the durability of the cables.

The bike is available in three attractive colors, including black, green, and teal. These shades are uniquely beautiful and well-selected, so every cyclist will find the right color for them.

You can add a rear rack and kickstand to the Marlin 5’s frame, which makes this model a great choice for commuters, as well as adventurous cyclists.

Do keep in mind that if this mountain bike was made of carbon fiber, it wouldn’t weigh the frame down as much, but the Trek Marlin 5 would come in at a much higher price point.

On Which Terrain Does The Trek Marlin 5 Perform Well?

We have to keep in mind that the Trek Marlin 5 is an entry-level machine so it isn't designed to be ridden by an expert rider, taking it on challenging trail riding.

Saying that the Marlin 5 is capable of rougher terrain and it works well as a trail bike. I'd always suggest that you check what the difficulty levels are before you hit the trail.

Bontrager Components

Let's clear something up for beginner riders getting into mountain biking.

Trek fits their bikes with 'Bontrager' parts. This is a Trek brand and made in-house.

For some brands, this isn't a sign of quality, yet this isn't the case here. Bontrager is a sign of quality.

On the Trek Marlin 5, Bontrager features a lot; the seat, seat post, handlebars, grips, and stem.

The stem is Bontrager alloy,  31. 8mm 7-degree Blendr compatible .

One of the best things about using these parts is that they are truly compatible across the Trek range of bikes.

As they are made by Trek, for Trek, the parts are made with the precise specification of their bikes so everything will fit seamlessly together!

For beginner riders, this is perfect as you won't need to give much thought about whether you're buying the correct parts.

[Check out this video from Trek for an overview of the range.]

Alternatives To The Trek Marlin 5

Without a doubt the Marlin 5 is feature-rich but how does this entry-level mountain bike compare to other bikes?

Trek Marlin 5 Vs Marlin 6

The first difference has to be the cost, the Trek Marlin 5 comes is quite a lot less than the 6 - this makes it an ideal first trail bike for those new to mountain biking, or those on a budget.

Having said that for trail riders looking to spend a bit more money, you do get a durable fork, a 2x drivetrain - including a better groupset and you even get a lighter bike!

One thing I do like with the Trek Marlin 6 is that there is the option to have either a man's frame or a women's. Whilst I find that women can ride men's bikes, it's nice to have an angled top tube.

You also get more options to customize certain features, so if you fancy a different wheel size, then the Marlin 6 can cater to that.

The standout benefit would be the upgrades with the fork - the fork on the 6 is a fair bit lighter than that on the Marlin 5. This reduces the weight of the bike, making biking trails or the commute easier.

Equally, the fork has a lockout and preload function so you are able to completely lock the fork to increase how efficiently you pedal - making your adventures easier!

Trek Marlin 5 Vs Giant Talon 3

The Giant Talon 3 has some good reviews and they're well deserved. In a lot of ways, these entry-level bikes are similar so are there any features that set them apart?

When compared to the Marlin 5, the Talon 3 seems to offer more traction when pedaling. This could potentially mean that as a rider, you don't feel as safe underfoot on the Trek Marlin and you could find that you're more likely to slip.

Though, the Trek Marlin 5 does give you a greater range of color types to choose from. So for trail riders who want to make their bike their own, the Trek could be the way to go.

There is a difference in wheel size too, with the Trek Marlin 5 you get 29" wheels, whereas Giant Talon 3 gets 27.5". Which one is better will come down to what you want from a bike.

The 27.5" wheels do mean the bike is lighter, which could be an appealing bicycle option to the commuter, beginners, or anyone who wants a bit more control!

Both hardtail mountain bikes have plenty to offer and the specifications are similar. For me, it all comes down to wheel sizes and the experience you want when you're cycling.

Trek Marlin 5 FAQs

Can i do tabletop jumps on the trek marlin 5.

The Marlin 5 is part of Treks' entry-level range and is not suitable to be taken on any type of jumps.

The wheels and tires are not designed to cope with jumps and could bend, even on a small jump so don't try it!

Can I Use Tubeless Tires On The Trek Marlin 5 bike?

Unfortunately not. The wheels aren't compatible with tubeless tires.

However, the wheels and tires are robust and suit mountain bikes well.

Does the Trek Marlin 5 have lockout suspension?

The Marlin 5 doesn't have a full lockout suspension. You do get a coil spring that has a pre-load adjuster though.

Final Thoughts

If you're wanting performance on a budget, there are plenty of plus points from this 29er.

The aluminium frame and Shimano Tourney components give the Trek Marlin 5 something to shout about.

Let's not forget the hydraulic disc brakes, making them ideal for dirt roads or a commute in any weather conditions. Braking at all speeds shouldn't be an issue with disc brakes.

Overall I have positive things to say about this bicycle. All terrains, mountains, trails, or commutes, the Trek Marlin 5 can do them all!

‍ This Trek Marlin 5 2022 review gives you all the details you need to decide if this budget hardtail is the right bike for you.

The Trek Marlin 5 is a solid bike for the price, but just a bit more money could get you a lot more bike. If you’re looking for a daily rider that’s comfortable on your local tails, the Marlin 5 will serve you well with a solid aluminum frame and reliable components.

I got my first mountain bike when I was twelve, and I’ve ridden everything from ultra-budget hardtails to high-performance racing rigs. For this review I dug deep into the spec’s and performance of the Trek Marlin 5 to see how this budget mountain bike measures up to the competition.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

‍ ‍ ‍ Trek Marlin 5 Performance

The Trek Marlin 5 is definitely an entry level mountain bike, so you shouldn’t expect serious capability for really technical trail riding. It does give you decent performance on easier flowy trails and definitely is enough bike to get you started in the sport.

The aluminum frame is durable and relatively light, so this bike feels rugged enough for taking on off-road riding and singletrack. It has enough capability for beginner riders, but you’ll quickly feel held back as your skills progress.

The Trek Marlin 5 definitely doesn’t have the same descending capability as a real trail bike, but it’s sturdy enough to handle some flowy singletrack.

The 100mm of front suspension isn’t very much, and you’ll find it bottoming out if you ride on very rocky, rough trails. The geometry is also limiting with a very steep head tube angle and short reach that will leave you in a sketchy position on steep descents.

The steep seat tube angle puts you in a good position for climbing efficiently. At under 31 lbs, this bike is relatively lightweight for it’s price and doesn’t feel like it’s slowing you down on the uphills.

If you’re looking at a bike like this, it’s likely it will be your only bike and will be used for multiple purposes. From trails to bike paths to cruising around town, the Trek Marlin 5 offers great versatility. I’ve used mountain bikes for commuting for years, and I think the Marlin 5 would be a great option for a commuter.

This bike is perfectly functional for commuting and comes with features like a kickstand mount and rear rack mounts so you can fully equip it for getting around town.

Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 Frame and Geometry

The Trek Marlin 5 is built around Trek’s Alpha Silver Aluminum frame which is durable and relatively lightweight. It’s awesome that this budget frame has internal cable routing that keep your shifting and brake lines protected and hidden away inside the frame. Combined with a chainstay disc brake mount, this makes the bike look sleek and clean.

The geometry is on-par with what you’d expect for a basic hardtail mountain bike, so you won’t get the most aggressive positioning. This geometry puts you in a nice comfortable position that’s great for all-around riding. Just don’t expect to feel comfortable on super steep trails.

Specs and Components

For the $740 price, the Marlin 5 gets you a decent selection of features including hydraulic disc brakes, a coil-sprung suspension fork, and reliable Shimano shifting. The components are nothing fancy, but they perform to my expectations for a budget bike.

The Marlin 5 comes equipped with a 2x8 Shimano Altus drivetrain for 16 total gears to choose from. This setup is a bit old-fashioned as most modern mountain bikes have shifted to one-by drivetrains for simplicity.

The Suntour XCM coil spring fork gives you 100mm of front suspension travel that helps smooth out bumps and chatter in the trail. It also has a hydraulic lockout so you can improve your efficiency on pavement.

This coil sprung fork doesn’t have as much adjustability as a higher end air fork, and it’s not lightweight, but it works well for the price.

The Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 comes with Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic disc brakes. If you’re looking at getting a budget mountain bike, this may be the first bike you’ve ever had with powerful hydraulic disc brakes, and you’ll be amazed by the power and modulation you get over other mechanical disc brakes or V-brakes.

Brakes are an easy-to-overlook feature for mountain bikes, but they make a huge difference in giving you confidence to ride fast knowing that you’ll be able to stop at a moment’s notice.

This bike comes with Bontrager alloy wheels. For this model Trek chose to have wheel size depend on the frame size. XXS comes with 26” wheels, XS and S come with 27.5” wheels, and M and above come with 29” wheels.

I think this is a pretty smart way to do wheel sizing for a bike like this. On small frame sizes, the rear wheel can be annoyingly close to the seat tube. Variable wheel sizing ensures that riders of all sizes have a frame and wheel size that feels easy-to-control.

The wheels are not tubeless compatible and use a schrader valve, so you’ll be limited if you’re looking to upgrade tires.

The Bontrager XR2 Comp wire bead tires on the Trek Marlin 5 are nothing special, but they work well for giving grip in a wide range of conditions. They aren’t particularly lightweight or aggressive, but they do the job.

Other Components

  • The Bontrager alloy handlebar is a good width that gives you control on the trail or in traffic.
  • The Bontrager Arveda saddle with steel rails is durable and comfortable on longer rides.
  • The bike has a durable and lightweight Shimano aluminum crankset.

Competition for the Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2

At $750, the Trek Marlin 5 is at the lower end of the price range for mountain bikes. There are a lot of bikes to choose from in this category so it’s hard to stand out. The Marlin 5 does a good job of providing high-value features and components, but it isn’t anything unique in the category.

In my opinion, the Trek Marlin 5 is at the edge of the price cutoff where you can start to get a really capable aluminum hardtail for trail riding. Unfortunately, I think it falls on the wrong side of that cuttoff.

The Trek Marlin 5 is a perfectly functional mountain bike for everyday use and occasionally hitting the trails, but if you want to spend more time on singletrack and develop your skills, there are better options.

Read on to see some other options to consider, including two of the best mountain bikes you can buy if you’re on a budget: the Marin Bobcat Trail 4 and the Canyon Grand Canyon 5.

Trek Marlin 5 vs Marin Bobcat Trail 4

Marin Bobcat Trail 4

For a more trail-worthy bike at a similar price, the Marin Bobcat Trail 4 is a fantastic option that’s built for progressing mountain bikers. At $800, the cost is only slightly more than the Trek Marlin 5, while the design and components make this a more capable trail bike.

The Bobcat Trail 4 has the same coil spring suspension fork and hydraulic disc brakes as the Marlin 5 and comes with a super reliable Microshift Advent 1x9 drivetrain. This budget 1x drivetrain offers fantastic value with wide 11-46 cassette gear range and a clutched rear derailleur. This drivetrain will be a big upgrade for trail riding.

The biggest difference between these two bikes is in the frame and geometry. Marin has done a much better job of bringing progressive modern mountain bike geometry into this budget frame. The slacker head tube angle and longer reach will make the Bobcat Trail feel much more confident on singletrack.

Personally, I would definitely recommend the Marin Bobcat Trail 4 over the Marlin 5 as it has more capability to ride well on trails as you progress your mountain bike skills. For $200 more you can upgrade to the Bobcat Trail 5 for even more capability.

Trek Marlin 5 vs Cannondale Trail 6

Cannondale Trail 7

The Cannondale Trail 7 is a popular entry-level aluminum hardtail that competes with the Trek Marlin 5 in price point and specs. There really isn’t too much differentiating these bikes. Both have basic but sturdy aluminum frames, 2x8 drivetrain setups, 100mm Suntour forks, and similar geometry.

One advantage of the Marlin 5 is that it comes with 29” wheels for size medium and above, where the Cannondale Trail 7 only has 27.5” wheels across the sizes.

Trek Marlin 5 vs Canyon Grand Canyon 5

Canyon Grand Canyon 5

If you can scrape together just a little bit more cash, the Grand Canyon 5 is an incredibly high-value mountain bike that delivers a lot more bang for your buck than the Marlin 5.

With a 1x12 Sram Shimano Deore drivetrain, a better suspension fork, better Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, and a lightweight aluminum frame with trail-ready geometry, this bike gives you a boatload of functionality that’s left off a mountain bike like the Trek Marlin 5.

Because of their direct-to-consumer model, Canyon is able to offer bikes at significantly lower prices than most manufacturers. The Grand Canyon is just $900. In my opinion, this is one of the best value hardtail mountain bikes on the market.

Geometry

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

Smaller frames (XXS-S) have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. The larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.

2020 Trek Marlin: What you need to know

The 2020 Trek Marlin is a quality entry-level hardtail mountain bike. It is ideal for kids, commuters and those new to mountain biking. It has seen improvements in its frame, components and design.

It is worth noting at this point that the Trek Marlin has proper mountain bike geometry. This is quite rare for beginner mountain bikes, making it stand out from other bikes of a similar price, as you can actually ride it on the trails and have fun. However, this is not the type of bike that you want to start hitting big jumps or very technical terrain. But, if you are looking for a fun bike to take on relatively mellow trails, cross country rides or gravel tracks, the 2020 Trek Marlin is worth considering.

The frame has been totally updated for 2020. All the bikes have the Alpha Silver Aluminium frame apart from the Marlin 4. This brings the 2020 Trek Marlin’s geometry and weight closer to the X-Caliber, which is a cross country race bike. It has internal cable routing to protect the cables and to give it a nice and tidy look. If you decide to upgrade to a dropper seat post , the internal cable routing is ready and waiting for it too.

Other Upgrades and Features

The 2020 Trek Marlin has upgraded contact points. Lock-on grips and low profile pedals all enhance the riding experience. There have been reports from some owners that the saddle isn’t particularly comfortable though (but you can obviously upgrade it if you don’t get on with it). But the new enhancements give a new rider a confidence-inducing feeling, making it a great bike to hone your skills on.

All the models in the range come with 100mm forks, disc brakes and a simple, durable drivetrain. These features are a similar style to what you would find on a cross country race bike. This means pedalling is smooth and efficient. It will cope with trail centre trails with no problem, but the higher-end versions are more comfortable thanks to the upgraded forks.

One notable feature that the 2020 Trek Marlin has (as do all Trek bikes), is the lifetime warranty. This adds value for money to an already well-priced bike.

For 2020, Trek has released women’s specific bikes in the Marlin range. These have the same geometry and components, but they have grips, handlebars, pedals and saddles designed for women, replacing the Trek Skye range of bikes.

Wheels and Brakes

Mountain bike wheel sizes are always worth looking at when you are buying a bike. The Marlin has different wheel sizes for different frame sizes. The extra small and small frame sizes have 27.5″ wheels while everything above a medium has 29″ wheels. This means that smaller riders will find the bike nimble and easy to change direction.

The hydraulic disc brakes and internal cable routing are features that are usually found on more expensive bikes, adding to the Trek Marlin’s great value for money.

Things to Consider When Choosing

  • The Trek Marlin is a hardtail bike aimed at people that want a bike for transport, as well as for having fun off-road on a budget. For riders that are planning on using it for just trail riding, the 2020 Trek Marlin should be fine, and you will have a lot of fun on it. But very rough terrain or downhill trails will be tricky.
  • Although the 2020 Trek Marlin has been fitted with improved from previous models, you may find that you want better ones. This is quite standard practise for new bikes, as they usually come with pedals that are not particularly grippy.
  • Smaller frame sizes come with short-reach brake levers. These make it easier for riders with small hands to brake.

2020 Trek Marlin 5

2020 trek marlin

The 2020 Trek Marlin 5 is the entry-level version of this hardtail. It is suited to riding daily as a commuter, but it also works well on the trails. This versatility makes it a good value for money bike at £395. Therefore, if you are looking for a reliable commuter bike that can hold its own on an off-road trail, this is worth considering. The light frame and 21 gears make this an efficient bike to pedal while the hydraulic disc brakes give it plenty of stopping power.

The fact that the Marlin 5 comes with a kickstand should give you an idea of what it is designed for. But, it is a low priced mountain bike that is suitable as a mode of transport, no matter what the surface you are riding on is.

Specifications

Trek marlin 6.

trek marlin 5 extra small

The 2020 Trek Marlin 6 is a bit more of a mountain bike than the 5. It is actually an entry-level cross country bike. That doesn’t mean that you can’t use it as a commuter too though. This is because it comes with the mounts for a kickstand, mudguards and rack.

It has a wide range of gears for fast and easy pedalling on any surface you need to ride on. It is running a 2 x 8 drivetrain. Which is rare for a bike in this price range, as they normally have a triple chainring upfront. The advantage you get with this is, there is less chance of your chain coming off on bumpy terrain and you can change gear quicker.

This version of the Marlin has a suspension lockout feature. This means you can stop the suspension bouncing when you are riding roads or climbing, to make pedalling more efficient.

Trek Marlin 7

2020 trek marlin

The 2020 Trek Marlin 7 is a mountain bike that is at home on a commute as it is in a cross country race. It has a higher quality fork and components to reflect its racing ability. This is the flagship model of the Marlin range, with a RockShox fork equipped with a lockout and 18-speed drivetrain.

This bike is designed to take on long distances over smooth and rough terrain, either for fun or for racing. Priced at just £550, makes it a very good value for money mountain bike.

What Is An Electric Mountain Bike?: Everything you need to know

Thanks for the article about the latest Trek Marlin mountain bikes available (and the reminder about the lifetime warranty). It’s helpful that you’ve pointed out which bikes are good options for someone who wants to both be able to take it on the trail and to use as a daily commuter. Many people don’t have the space for more than one bike so it’s great to find options that will work in a variety of environments and conditions!

' src=

Thanks for your comment. It is a good versatile bike for novice riders.

' src=

Definitely tempted with this bike; it’s a great one that I can use pretty much anywhere from the sound of it, and with a decent price like 395, it’s something that won’t break the bank, either. I have no real experience with Trek bikes, but this one looks like a real ringer. I like how it’s versatile for those of us who are smaller, too.

Thanks for your comment. It is well priced and well made. I wouldn’t be suitable for big downhill trails with jumps and drops, but it would be good for most novice riders.

I would be interested in seeing how the internal cable routing for the dropper post is accomplished on the Marlin 7″

If you look at this YouTube video, the guy shows you how it is routed. https://youtu.be/-Fg5M_Hygzo?t=342

I just got my new 2020 Marlin 7 Emerald/Iris and no holes.

Major disappointment in Trek, but the claim is that they changed them for 2020. Apparently the derailleur being used mounts over the reinforcement area and the brilliant engineers decided to just nix it. Thoroughly disappointed.

That is good to know. Thanks for sharing, it is great to get information from customers positive and negative.

' src=

Just got the marlin 7 2020, it doesn’t have 27 gears it has 18 and I think they have under geared it. Other than that it is a brilliant bike.

You are right! Not sure where I got that from, thanks for pointing it out. I have now changed the info. Glad you like the bike, and thanks for letting me know.

Just picked um my marlin 6, great looking bike But the pedal’s aren’t great can anyone suggest any worth while or any other simple upgrades worth doing. Thanks

Hi James, It all depends open your budget. I have the Nukeproof Horizon pedals and they are the best I have used. However, if you want something a little cheaper, check out the DMR V12. You can see them on chain reaction on the link below.

Hi Ari, it all depends on your budget. Brand X are reasonably priced, but check out my blog on dropper posts to help you choose the right one for your bike.

  2. Trek Marlin 5 Review: The Best Entry-Level Mountain Bike Around

  3. Review of Trek Marlin 5

The Marlin 5 Gen 2 has 16 gears on a 2×8-speed drivetrain and comes with a complete Shimano Altus M315 drivetrain, which is one quality class higher than Tourney.
