New Orleans’ largest cruise ship ever sets sail for the western Caribbean

It has five water slides and a frigid ‘ice bar,’ where even the glassware is frozen.

So far, 2018 has seen major developments for the Port of New Orleans. The Disney Cruise Line announced its Wonder ship will sail from the Erato Street Cruise Terminal in 2020, and Royal Caribbean cruises return next month . Yesterday marked another first: the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway became the largest cruise ship ever to sail from New Orleans.

“Our cruise business contributes significantly to the hospitality industry’s regional economic impact, and we are pleased to welcome the largest ship we have ever accommodated,” stated Port of New Orleans president and CEO Brandy D. Christian in a press release.

The Breakaway is 1,068.3 feet long. To put that into perspective, it’s three times the size of the Titanic and 22.3 feet longer than the Chrysler Building is tall.

Built in 2013 and refurbished in 2018, the Breakaway set sail from New Orleans for the first time ever at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, November 11. It’s currently ferrying 3,963 guests and 1,657 crew members on a weeklong cruise through the western Caribbean.

The ship features five water slides, a ropes course, three Broadway shows, including Rock of Ages and Burn the Floor, 24 dining venues, and 21 bars and lounges, including an ice bar where the ambient temperature hovers at 17 degrees Fahrenheit. Everything from the glasses to the bar is made of ice, and the admission cost includes a parka rental.

There are 2,014 staterooms, which range from 932-square-foot suites to 99-square-foot studios designed for solo travelers. Norwegian pioneered the solo cruise concept in 2010, when it introduced single-occupancy cabins. The snug interior units include access to a shared lounge area and hosted activities to promote mingling.

The ship will offer seven, 10, and 11 day cruises through April 2019. Ports of call include Ochas Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; and Belize City and Norwegian-owned resort island Harvest Caye, both in Belize. Prior to arriving in New Orleans, the Breakaway sailed to the western Caribbean from New York City.

With arrival of Norwegian Breakaway, New Orleans gets it biggest cruise ship ever

largest cruise ship new orleans

New Orleans soon will be home to one of the world's biggest cruise ships.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 5-year-old Norwegian Breakaway on Sunday will begin sailing out of the city after several years of sailing out of New York and in Europe.

The 3,963-passenger vessel will operate a series of five- to eleven-day voyages from New Orleans to the Western Caribbean through April. The trips will feature stops at such ports as Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and Belize City, Belize. Also on the schedule are day visits to Harvest Caye, Norwegian's two-year-old private cruise hub along the southern coast of Belize.

At 145,655 tons, Breakaway is Norwegian's fifth largest ship, and it ranks among the 25 largest cruise vessels of all time. It'll be the largest cruise ship ever based in New Orleans.

Unveiled in 2013, Breakaway was the first ship in Norwegian's two-ship Breakaway series, which also includes the 145,655-ton Norwegian Getaway . The line in recent years also has unveiled three bigger Breakaway Plus vessels, the 165,157-ton Norwegian Escape , 167,725-ton Norwegian Joy  and 168,028-ton Norwegian Bliss .

While among the biggest ships in the world, all of the Breakaway and Breakaway Plus vessels are dwarfed by the biggest ships at Royal Caribbean. Royal Caribbean's recently unveiled Symphony of the Seas , the world's biggest cruise ship, measures 228,081 tons.

Breakaway Becomes Largest Ship to Sail from New Orleans

  • November 14, 2018

largest cruise ship new orleans

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) welcomed the largest cruise ship in both length and passenger occupancy to ever sail from the port when the Norwegian Breakaway homeported at the Julia Street Cruise Terminal for its inaugural cruise Nov. 11, 2018, the port said.

“This cruise sector milestone validates Port NOLA as an in-demand cruise port and an important catalyst that contributes to our city’s excellent tourism and hospitality industries,” said Brandy D. Christian, Port of New Orleans President and CEO. “Norwegian Cruise Line is a valued cruise line partner and we are thrilled to welcome the Norwegian Breakaway.”

The 1,068-foot vessel will sail from New Orleans through April 12, 2019, offering five, seven, 10- and 11-day Western Caribbean cruises.

“We are excited to introduce Norwegian Breakaway to New Orleans, providing our guests with another premium destination to cruise from when sailing to the Caribbean,” said Andy Stuart, President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line. “New Orleans is well known for its lively music, culinary scene and entertainment, a perfect complement to the high-caliber experiences guests will discover on Norwegian Breakaway.”

The port said it is on target to surpass 1 million cruise passenger movements for the fifth consecutive year in 2018, thanks in part to ocean and river cruise lines homeporting newer and larger ships.

Homeports are 98 percent of cruise calls at the port, according to a statement.

“Ninety percent of cruise passengers travel from out-of-state, 73 percent spend a day or two in New Orleans either before or after their cruise, and 75 percent report making a purchase in the Crescent City,” Christian said. “These passengers generate over 306,000 rooms a night in New Orleans-area hotels.”

The Norwegian Getaway repositions to New Orleans replacing Norwegian Breakaway in November 2019.

What’s Included and Not Included in Your Cruise Fare!

An image showcasing a cruise ship with a clear division

I am eagerly anticipating embarking on my dream cruise vacation!

But before I embark on this exciting adventure, I need to know exactly what’s included and not included in my cruise fare.

From the comfort of my cabin to the delicious food options and thrilling entertainment, I want to make sure I have all the information I need to plan my budget.

So, let’s dive in and explore what’s included and what’s not in my cruise fare!

  • Cabin is included in the fare but amenities vary depending on cruise line and cabin type.
  • Buffet offers a wide selection of international dishes, while specialty restaurants come at an additional cost.
  • Free shows and entertainment are included, but paid activities such as go-karts and simulated skydiving are available for an extra charge.
  • Gratuities, spa treatments, and extra activities like go-karts and roller coasters are not included in the cruise fare and require separate payment.

Cabin and Accommodations

The cabin is included in the fare, so I don’t have to worry about any extra charges for my room. It’s great to know that I can enjoy a comfortable and cozy space without any additional costs.

The cabin amenities vary depending on the cruise line and the type of cabin chosen. Typically, cabins come with standard features such as a bed, storage space, a private bathroom, and a television. Some higher-end cabins may offer additional amenities like a balcony, mini-fridge, or even a butler service.

As for room service options, many cruise lines offer 24-hour room service, allowing passengers to order food and beverages directly to their cabin. It’s a convenient option for those who prefer dining in the privacy of their own room.

Food and Dining Options

I love the variety of food options available on a cruise, from the buffet to the main dining room.

The buffet is a great option for those who want a wide selection of dishes to choose from. They usually offer a range of cuisines, including international dishes, salads, soups, and desserts. It’s a casual dining experience where you can try a little bit of everything.

On the other hand, specialty restaurants are a more upscale option. These restaurants often have a specific theme or cuisine, such as Italian, steakhouse, or seafood. While these restaurants come at an additional cost, they provide a more intimate and gourmet dining experience.

Whether you prefer the variety of the buffet or the elegance of the specialty restaurants, there are plenty of dining options to satisfy every palate on a cruise.

Entertainment and Activities

With a wide range of entertainment shows, activities, and movies, there is never a dull moment on a cruise ship. Here are some key things to know about the entertainment and activities on board:

Free shows: Cruise ships offer a variety of free entertainment shows, including Broadway-style performances, live music, comedy shows, and magic acts. These shows are included in the fare and provide great entertainment for guests of all ages.

Paid activities: While many activities on the ship are included in the fare, there are also some paid activities available for an additional charge. These can include go-karts, simulated skydiving, and even roller coasters. These activities offer a unique and thrilling experience for those looking for a little extra excitement on their cruise.

Additional Charges and Gratuities

When it comes to additional charges on a cruise, it’s important to be aware of the cost of specialty restaurants and gratuities. Specialty restaurants offer a more upscale dining experience and usually have a cover charge. These restaurants offer a variety of cuisines and are a great option for a special night out. Gratuities, on the other hand, are the service charges that are automatically added to your onboard account. These charges typically amount to around $15 per person, per day, and are distributed among the ship’s staff. It’s important to budget for these charges as they are not included in the cruise fare. Additionally, spa treatments and services are not included in the fare and also come with an additional cost. So, be sure to factor in these extra charges when planning your cruise budget.

Keywords: specialty restaurants, gratuities, spa treatments.

Extra Activities and Excursions

Go-karts, simulated skydiving, and roller coasters are some of the extra activities on a cruise that may require an additional charge. These paid activities provide an exciting and thrilling experience for passengers seeking adventure on their vacation. Cruise lines offer a variety of options to cater to different interests and age groups. From high-speed go-kart races to indoor simulated skydiving, these activities add an extra level of excitement to the onboard experience.

However, it is important to note that these activities are not included in the cruise fare and require separate payment. Additionally, when the ship docks at various ports, passengers have the opportunity to participate in shore excursions. These excursions, which are organized by the cruise line, offer a range of activities and experiences at the destinations visited, such as guided tours, water sports, and cultural explorations.

Similar to the paid activities onboard, shore excursions also require separate payment. It is advisable to plan and budget accordingly to enjoy these additional experiences during your cruise.

Are There Any Additional Charges for Using the Gym on the Cruise Ship?

Yes, there may be additional charges for using the gym on the cruise ship. However, there are usually membership options available that allow guests to use the gym for free, just like in a resort.

Are Tender Boats Available for Free During Port Visits?

Yes, tender boats are available for free during port visits. They are included in the cruise fare and run the entire time the ship is in port. There are no additional fees for using them.

Do Specialty Restaurants on the Cruise Ship Require an Extra Charge?

Yes, specialty restaurants on the cruise ship require an extra charge. However, there are still plenty of included dining options. Onboard entertainment, such as daily shows and activities, is included in the fare.

Are Spa Treatments and Services Included in the Cruise Fare?

Spa treatments and services, like massages and facials, are not included in the cruise fare. They come with additional charges. However, the gym is free to use and offers great views.

Are There Any Additional Charges for Activities Like Go-Karts or Simulated Skydiving on the Ship?

Yes, there are additional charges for activities like go-karts and simulated skydiving on the ship. These are considered specialty activities and are not included in the cruise fare.

Norwegian Cruise Line Brings New Ships to New Orleans and Port Canaveral

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced they’ll be relocating two of their ships, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Epic , this fall. Now departing from New Orleans and Port Canaveral (Orlando), these new voyages cater to the rising demand for warm-weather destinations among travelers. Guests can indulge in seven-day round-trip voyages to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, including visits to the cruise line’s private island destinations: Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, and Harvest Caye in Belize.

Norwegian Getaway: A Tropical Journey from New Orleans

norwegian getaway

After a summer in the Mediterranean, Norwegian will reposition the Getaway to New Orleans starting October 20, 2024. This ship will replace the Norwegian Breakaway, which will relocate to Miami for the Fall and Winter. While it’s there, the Getaway will be the newest and largest ship sailing from New Orleans, almost a decade newer and 33% larger than competing cruise ships sailing from the port.

Norwegian Getaway, the second ship in the Breakaway-class, has 40 different restaurants, bars, and lounges. It features the popular Waterfront exterior promenade offering fantastic ocean views and outdoor dining experiences, a ropes course, two drop water slides, two pools, and four hot tubs.

Itineraries on the Getaway include stops at Harvest Caye, Belize; Roatan, Honduras; and Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico.

Norwegian Epic relocates to Port Canaveral (Orlando)

Norwegian will also reposition the Norwegian Epic to Port Canaveral, FL, starting on October 30, 2024. There, it will join a variety of other cruise ships of all ages and sizes in offering Caribbean itineraries. This ship will explore destinations like Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas; St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; Cozumel, Mexico; and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

The Epic is a one-of-a-kind ship, being the only ship in its class. It has 19 bars and lounges, 15 complimentary and specialty restaurants, the Posh Beach Club adults-only area, a large aqua park for kids, two pools, and five hot tubs.

High demand for Caribbean cruises

Originally, these two ships were supposed to be sailing Mediterranean cruises during this time, but because of an increased demand for warm-weather sailings in the Caribbean, Norwegian decided to reposition them. “The Caribbean continues to be a hotspot for our guests worldwide, especially during the fall and winter seasons,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “We are committed to providing our guests with the best vacation experience, and bringing two of our largest ships to sail picturesque, tropical cruises from New Orleans and Port Canaveral, Fla., was a no-brainer.”

Guests on canceled sailings will receive full refund plus a 10% future cruise credit

Unfortunately, these changes mean thousands of guests will be impacted by the canceled sailings. For the Getaway, Norwegian has canceled seven cruises. Guests who were booked on these sailings have been notified already. Those guests will receive a full monetary refund for the full cost of the cruise, plus a 10% discount on a future cruise through December 31, 2024. Guests scheduled for the sailings on the Epic that will be canceled have not yet been notified at the time of this publication.

Bookings will open in February

The new sailings will open for booking in February. Guests can visit Norwegian Cruise Line’s website or contact a travel professional to secure their spot on these new sailings.

The release also stated, Disney Cruise Line returned to the Big Easy with the Disney Magic in January, while Royal Caribbean returns with a new vessel, the “Brilliance of the Seas” in November 2024. The port is also seeing record growth in river cruises, with nine homeported vessels including America’s first Viking Cruise that began sailing in 2022.

Ninety percent of cruise guests travel from out-of-state, with 73% spending one or two days in New Orleans either before or after their cruise, the release said. That generates more than 300,000 hotel room nights in New Orleans and more than $125 million in local spending each year.

"New Orleans is one of the most popular pre- and post-cruise destinations in the country, which is a tribute to our excellent partners at the Port of New Orleans as well as the work of our team at New Orleans and Co.,” said Walter J. Leger III, President and CEO of New Orleans and Co. “Travel drives our economy, but visitors don’t just show up. In a highly competitive marketplace, travelers have choices, and we have to earn their business through aggressive sales and promotion."

The entire cruise industry came to a complete halt in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Topping pre-pandemic levels set in February 2020 with 154,409 passenger movements and 31 vessel calls, Port NOLA set a new passenger record in March 2023 for oceangoing and river cruises.

“This is really encouraging as our cruise business drives tourism and contributes significantly to the hospitality industry," said Port NOLA President and CEO Brandy D. Christian. "We want to thank all our cruise line and hospitality partners as we work together to make cruising out of New Orleans two vacations in one."

Princess Cruises just unveiled its biggest ship ever — and it's loaded with new features

Gene Sloan

The most notable new Princess Cruises ship in over a decade is finally here.

The much-awaited, 21-deck Sun Princess — the biggest and most venue-packed Princess ship ever — began its first sailing with paying passengers Wednesday after an 20-day delay .

The 4,300-passenger vessel, originally scheduled to debut Feb. 8, departed from Civitavecchia, Italy (the port for Rome), late in the day on a 10-night sailing across the Mediterranean.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The initial itinerary for Sun Princess will take it to Naples and the island of Sicily in Italy; Piraeus (the port for Athens) and the island of Crete in Greece; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Mallorca and Barcelona in Spain.

"This is an historic day as our new Sun Princess sets sail on her inaugural voyage, and our guests get to experience our sensational, next-level Love Boat firsthand," John Padgett, Princess Cruises' president, said Wednesday as the vessel began its first voyage. "The ship is a magnificent showcase of advanced design, technology and craftsmanship, with elevated spaces and experiences all focused on taking the Princess vacation experience to a new level."

Under development for more than six years, Sun Princess is the first of Princess' new Sphere Class of vessels. They have been designed to be significantly bigger than previous Princess ships and offer several notable new-for-the-line features.

Related: Princess is getting creative with its newest ship

Among the most significant new offerings, Sun Princess is the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — part of an effort to draw more upscale customers to the brand.

Additionally, Sun Princess offers an innovative new type of "cabana cabin" along the ship's extra-wide 10th deck that comes with access to a private deck area. Plus, the top deck of the ship received some unusual-for-Princess sizzle with the addition of a glass-dome-topped pool area that transforms into a nightspot after the sun goes down.

Other notable differences between Sun Princess and earlier Princess ships include the lack of a buffet restaurant on its main pool deck. But don't worry, buffet lovers: There still is a buffet-like venue on the ship. It's eight decks below the pool deck, closer to the ship's central piazza and just off its outside promenade.

The ship's main theater, to be called the Princess Arena, also has a new look. Its new-for-Princess, in-the-round shape can be converted into a more traditional proscenium-type theater or a keyhole-type theater to allow for different types of productions.

Among other standout venues, Sun Princess features a secret hideaway for magical performances designed in partnership with the Magic Castle performance venue in Los Angeles.

The biggest Princess Cruises ship ever

At 177,882 gross tons, Sun Princess is about 22% bigger than the biggest ships in the Princess fleet until now. Although 22% bigger, it's designed to hold just 17% more passengers.

In other words, its space-to-passenger ratio is greater, making the ship feel roomier — if only modestly.

The arrival of Sun Princess marks the first time Princess has launched a new class of ship in nearly 11 years.

Related: The 3 types of Princess ships, explained

Sun Princess will initially sail in Europe through the fall before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for voyages to the Caribbean. Fares start at $577 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a seven-night Caribbean sailing.

A second ship in the new Sphere Class series, to be called Star Princess, is on order from the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, for delivery in 2025. Its first voyage is scheduled for Aug. 4, 2025, and will take place in the Mediterranean.

TPG will be reporting live from Sun Princess starting March 9.

ACL-American Cruise Lines launches Mississippi River's largest season yet

CruiseMapper logo

ACL-American Cruise Lines has announced the commencement of its Mississippi River season, with the arrival of the first guests in New Orleans (Port NOLA Louisiana) .

In the upcoming weeks, all 5 of ACL's Mississippi riverboats will commence cruises on the Lower Mississippi. This year marks the company's largest season to date across the country, particularly on the Mississippi, where ACL plans for ongoing expansion. The company's new riverboats are scheduled to sail more than 16 itineraries throughout the region, exploring not only the Mississippi but also its tributaries, the Tennessee, Ohio, and Cumberland Rivers.

Over the past five years, ACL has nearly tripled its U.S. fleet and introduced brand-new riverboats on the Mississippi River annually since 2018. The company recently announced the construction of five more ships, including new riverboats, at its affiliated shipyard, Chesapeake Shipbuilding , in Salisbury, MD.

Following the Mississippi River season opening, ACL's full fleet of 19 other small ships and riverboats will continue to navigate across the country, visiting 140+ U.S. ports this year.

ACL remains the sole company offering two distinct styles of riverboats for exploring U.S. rivers, along with several categories of small cruise ships sailing U.S. coasts. The company's most recent accolades include a new series of 12 small coastal cruise ships, known as Project Blue, offering exclusive itineraries along the East Coast. While ACL expands along U.S. coastal waterways, it also intensifies production along U.S. rivers, particularly the Mississippi. More information on the company's newest riverboats and all ships under construction will be released as the year progresses.

ACL's ongoing development along the Mississippi River region contributes millions annually to a growing number of U.S. ports and communities. The company's innovative new riverboats and unique itineraries provide numerous opportunities for its guests.

In May of this year, ACL will introduce several new Mississippi River experiences, including the first Great Smoky Mountains National Parks cruises. This exclusive itinerary allows guests to explore Great Smoky Mountains National Park along a 12-day voyage from Knoxville, TN, to Nashville, TN , cruising the Ohio, Tennessee, and Cumberland Rivers.

Also in May, ACL's first new 35-day Civil War Battlefields cruise will embark, exploring the Mississippi, Tennessee, and Cumberland Rivers, as well as extensive regions of the East Coast and Chesapeake Bay, while visiting 20+ Civil War battlefields.

In August, ACL will host a historic 61-day Great United States cruise - the USA's longest river cruise - exploring 4 rivers, 20 states, 3 national parks, and sailing along East Coast USA and Hudson River, with call ports including New York City , Boston MA , and Bar Harbor ME .

In 2024, ACL proudly continues its 50-year tradition of exploring the USA. As the company expands across North America, more opportunities arise along the Mississippi River and beyond, delighting guests and supporting historic sites, cultural venues, and American-owned businesses across the country.

A classic mississippi river cruise line has abruptly shut down.

One less cruise line will ply the Mississippi River this summer, bringing fewer ships and passengers to Minnesota ports.

American Queen Voyages, one of three cruise lines touring the Upper and Lower Mississippi in recent years, abruptly announced on its website last week that it would be shutting down, citing an inability to rebound from the pandemic. The cruise line began life in 2011 as American Queen Steamboat Company.

The line's iconic paddlewheeler American Queen and sister ships American Duchess and American Countess had once again been scheduled to visit Minnesota river towns such as Red Wing and Winona this summer, on various Mississippi itineraries. AQV's website includes a link for requesting a refund for these canceled journeys.

Those three ships are currently docked in or around New Orleans. There was no immediate information on the vessels' future.

American Queen Voyages may be out, but U.S. river cruising is surging, including on the Mississippi, which offers a more laid-back alternative to ocean cruising.

The busiest operator on the Great River is rapidly expanding American Cruise Lines, whose sleek new line of smaller, modern "American Riverboats" — American Melody, American Serenade and American Symphony — will again sail a range of Mississippi River tours including Minnesota, starting in late June. In 2025, American Cruise Lines' own paddlewheelers American Heritage and American Splendor will also come to Minnesota. Itineraries that begin in Red Wing include a pre-cruise hotel night in St. Paul.

Meanwhile, luxury line Viking River Cruises will embark on its third summer/fall season aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi, the largest cruise ship on the waterway.

There were signs of American Queen Voyages pulling back as early as last year. The line announced last summer that it would end its Great Lakes tours, which had recently included stops in Duluth. Travel Weekly reported in January that a number of travel agencies had stopped selling the cruise line due to service issues and delayed payments.

Norwegian Breakaway llega a New Orleans en 2018 (Norwegian Cruise Line)

New Orleans will get its largest cruise ship ever in 2018

Norwegian Cruise Line will start sailing its Norwegian Breakaway from New Orleans in 2018. The ship will be the largest to call New Orleans its homeport and will nearly double Norwegian's cruise capacity from the city.

The 3,963-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will start sailing from New Orleans in November 2018, according to a Tuesday morning (Oct. 3) news release from the Port of New Orleans. The ship will sail week-long as well as 10- and 11-day cruises to the Caribbean.

Brandy D. Christian, president and CEO of the Port of New Orleans, said the ship will add jobs and boost revenue for the local hospitality industry.

"We are pleased to welcome the largest ship we have ever accommodated," Christian said.

The Norwegian Breakaway will replace the Norwegian Pearl, which sails from New Orleans to the Caribbean and from Seattle to Alaska depending on the time of year. The Pearl, which can serve up to 2,394 passengers, begins sailing cruises from New Orleans in November and is set to homeport here through April 2018.

At 1,068 feet, the Breakaway is the largest ship the Port of New Orleans has docked, both in length and in passenger occupancy. The ship was built in 2013, and will undergo a two-week dry dock next spring to "refresh" its public spaces, including new flooring, furnishing, decor and stateroom carpeting, according to the news release.

The Breakaway is currently homeported in New York City, where it sails week-long trips to Bermuda and to the Bahamas and Florida.

Andy Stuart, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line, said the decision to move the Breakaway to New Orleans follows growing demand for cruises beyond the east and west coasts of the United States.

Once ported in New Orleans, the Breakaway will visit ports of call including Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; the Roatan Bay Islands, Honduras; and Harvest Caye, Belize, an island owned and developed by Norwegian Cruise Line.

"We want to provide more opportunities for our guests across the country to explore beautiful destinations and enjoy all the spectacular features of our newest ships, along with the freedom and flexibility that only a Norwegian cruise can offer," Stuart said.

The arrival of the Norwegian Breakaway, in addition to a  Royal Caribbean ship set to arrive in December 2018 , will bolster already growing cruise line traffic for the Port of New Orleans. The port handled more than 1 million passengers in 2016, reaching a new record and breaking the 1 million passenger mark for a third year in a row.

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas will home port in New Orleans starting Dec. 15, 2018. The 2,435-passenger ship will sail week-long cruises to The Bahamas and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

The Norwegian Breakaway arrives in New Orleans on Nov. 11, 2018.
