Great App awful service

If I were just reviewing the app then I would give it 5 stars all day long. The rating for the service they offer would be 1 star. The bus will be late 90% of the time. My daughter uses the bus regularly for a 9 mile trip to school and back. She’s quite often left waiting for a bus for 30 to 40 minutes in the cold and the rain. You can see the bus not moving on the app a mile away not moving. Occasionally they will put their out of service sign on as they pass the school kids . But you can see on the app they then stop to pick up other passengers. When we looked at the school Stagecoach had a stand there and they told us how they would provide a reliable service and look after our children. I have complained to the help desk and promised a reply but have never had one and when I ring back they tell me that they have closed the case . Stagecoach you are running a dreadful service in the Eastbourne Hastings area and don’t deserve the contact.

Ok-ish App, Horrific Service

Stagecoach’s app is alright. Arrival times are always different depending on whether you look at the bus or the stop, which is confusing. The actual service, on the other hand, is easily the worst I have ever seen from any company (in general—not just transit). In the morning, arrival times are fairly accurate and the bus comes as expected. Afternoon and evening service is horrible. On two separate occasions, I’ve been left without a bus outside in the cold wind and rain for over an hour; once for an hour and a half, and once this evening for *two and a half hours*!!! It’s gotten me home after dark when it’s no longer safe for me to walk home alone. Major safety issue for me. The second time, this was only solved because I eventually found a taxi, and the bus still had not arrived; It passed in the opposite direction three times in the opposite direction and didn’t return. The one that *did* come the right way—which the app said would stop at my stop—drove right by with the “out of service” sign on. I’m planning on finding an alternative so I never have to use this service again. I already have fairly limited free time due to my job, and I really can’t afford to spend hours of it waiting for buses that don’t come on time—if at all.

Has the potential to be good…

See, the problems here are twofold; the app itself is NOT optimised and even when it’s just left in the background it eats battery like a horse that’s got into the feed shed. But that could be forgiven if it would just stop being so completely random with bus times! The 79 is coming at quarter past. No, half past. No actually it’s the 300 now and the 79 is coming at quarter past again. Now it’s twenty past and it still says due at quarter past and oh now it’s gone from the screen entirely! Find the 79 on the road and tap on it and hey it says it’ll get there at half past. Except it doesn’t. The 79 doesn’t actually exist anymore but there is another one in forty-five minutes… maybe. How about instead of live tracking, it just ticks off the stops it’s already done? Less data to mess up then, and then you know it’s definitely coming and you’re not just following a inexistent dot on the screen!

A vast number of changes are being implemented across Devon's bus network this spring due to a review of congestion and roadworks that is impacting bus services. Stagecoach says its new timetables are aimed at improve the reliability and punctuality of buses.

New connections are offered across several services with other timetables seeing increased frequencies. Some services will also be reduced in frequency due to customer demand.

The full changes will come into force on Monday, April 14. However, some changes are also being introduced on Sunday, March 24, and Sunday, March 31.

Stagecoach South West managing director Peter Knight said: "We look forward to being able to offer more robust timetables for our customers this spring. It has become increasingly challenging to be able to run our services reliably with multiple roadworks and congestion related delays.

"Roadworks and the performance of the highway are now the biggest challenge to us being able to provide reliable bus services in Devon. We are working closely with our partners at Devon County Council to try and improve this for customers travelling in the region."

The bus timetable changes in full:

Exeter Area

Service A (Alphington - City Centre)

Timing changes are introduced each day to improve reliability and punctuality.

In line with passenger demand on Saturday morning, buses will run every 40 minutes between 0525 and 0805, then every 20 minutes until 0905 and then every 15 minutes throughout the day.

Service B (Science Park – Exminster via City Centre)

Following passenger feedback and working in partnership with Devon County Council, a number of new evening journeys between Science Park and Matford Park and Ride are introduced Monday to Saturday.

Additional departures are introduced from the Science Park at 1955, 2100, 2205 and 2310, with additional departures from Matford Park and Ride at 1927 (starts Exminster at 1920), 2033, 2138 and 2243.

Service E1/E2 (Exwick – Beacon Heath / Pinhoe via City Centre)

Monday to Saturday early evenings and Saturday mornings, there are a number of changes to departure times, with a small number of poorly used journeys withdrawn.

During the evening where journeys terminate at Exwick, these will complete the loop around Exwick and terminate at Iveagh Court.

Following a review of passenger demand on Sunday and Public Holidays, the frequency of buses between Pinhoe and the City Centre via Lancelot Road during core retail hours (approximately 0930-1730) will be doubled from every 60 minutes to every 30 minutes.

Service F (Cowley Bridge – Summerway via City Centre)

To ensure a reliable and punctual timetable can be operated, the frequency of Service F will be adjusted to operate every 70 minutes.

To simplify the service, there will also be changes to the route of Service F.

From the High Street, the majority of journeys will operate via Union Road and Prince Charles Road to Beacon Heath and then serve Savoy Hill and Summerway on a one-way loop, before operating back from Beacon Heath towards the High Street via Prince Charles Road and Union Road. There are no changes to the route between West Garth Road and the High Street. The section of route along Pinhoe Road will no longer be served, however, alternative services are available along Pinhoe Road.

This change of route will improve the level of service to Union Road and Prince Charles Road, as well as improved access to Morrisons in both directions.

Service H (Exeter St David’s – Digby)

Service I and J (City Centre – Digby)

To provide a more even spacing of Services 2, 57, I/J and R/S along Topsham Road during the evening, departure times on Service I from Digby will be changed to operate 30 minutes later throughout the evening, leaving Digby at XX00.

Service P (Crossmead – Pennsylvania via City Centre)

To ensure a reliable and punctual timetable can be operated, the frequency of buses during the main part of the day Monday to Saturday will be adjusted to every 35-40 minutes.

Following requests and feedback from passengers, the route of Service P will be amended from 14 April 2024.

From Exeter St Thomas, towards Crossmead, buses will operate a one-way clockwise loop via Cowick Street, Dunsford Hill, Barley Lane, Barley Farm Road, Berkshire Drive, Charnley Avenue, Isleworth Road, Buddle Lane, Okehampton Road and Buller Road before returning to current at Cowick Street. The new route for Service P will see the service reinstated to Charnley Avenue, Isleworth Road, Buddle Lane, Okehampton Road and Buller Road.

As a result of the new route, Bowhay Lane will no longer be served, however, alternative bus stops are available nearby on Dunsford Road (Services 6A and 360) or Berkshire Drive (Service P).

Service R and S (Wonford and Thornpark Rise Circular)

There are some changes to departure times Monday to Friday and Saturday early mornings to better utilise resource and match passenger demand.

There is a slight reduction to the number of journeys on Saturday morning to better reflect passenger demand.

Service Green (Matford Park & Ride – Sowton Park & Ride via City Centre)

Service 1/1A (Exeter – Cullompton / Tiverton)

1645 MF College Days Petroc to Tiverton Bus Station withdrawn due to low demand.

In summary, the frequency of buses Monday to Saturday daytime between Exeter and Cullompton will be increased providing a co-ordinated 15 minute frequency and an additional journey opportunity every hour.

To coincide with the increase in frequency between Exeter and Cullompton, a new route variation will be introduced, known as Service 1A.

Service 1A will operate every 30 minutes throughout the day operating a more direct route via the B3181 and then serving Swallow Way before arriving into Cullompton.

Timing changes are introduced Monday to Sunday to improve reliability and punctuality and to provide a more even spread of departures.

New bus stops will be provided on Moor Lane, to provide a number of new journey opportunities. Connections with the Falcon will be available at Honiton Road Park and Ride and passengers travelling to and from Sowton Park and Ride will be able to use Service Green.

Service 55 (Exeter – Tiverton)

Monday to Saturday journeys from Exeter to Tiverton at 0545, 0730 and 1933 from Tiverton to Exeter will be withdrawn. An altenative journey oeprates via Service 355 at 0730.

Following a request from Devon County Council, the 2000, 2130 and 2300 Monday to Saturday journeys from Exeter Bus Station to Tiverton will additionally serve Silverton (Square). As a result, Monday to Saturday evening departures from Tiverton to Exeter will be re-timed to depart slightly later.

Service 57 (Exeter – Brixington via Topsham and Exmouth)

Following a review of data and surveys on reliability, punctuality and passenger flows and demand, significant changes to the route and timetable are introduced. With low demand for travel across Exmouth , the route will be separated in Exmouth Town Centre to ensure passengers will benefit from a more reliable and punctual service.

Service 57 will operate between Exeter Bus Station and Exmouth Parade only. The section of route between Exmouth Parade and Brixington will be covered by a new Service 99.

During the early morning and late evening, some Service 57 journeys will continue on to operate as new Service 99 and therefore at these times, a through service to Brixington will continue to be provided.

To ensure a robust timetable can be operated the Monday to Saturday daytime frequency will be adjusted to operate every 20 minutes. There are no changes to the frequency of buses during the evening or on Sunday and Public Holidays.

A small number of school day only journeys will be removed from the timetable.

Service 58/58A (Exeter – Exmouth)

Timing changes are introduced Monday to Saturday to improve reliability and punctuality

Service 95 (Exmouth – Sandy Bay) – 24 March 2024

Timing changes are introduced each day to improve reliability and punctuality. To achieve this and better reflect passenger demand the journeys that currently operate between Countess Wear and Exmouth Leisure Centre are removed from the timetable.

To ensure the route caters for the vast majority of passengers, who are those travelling between Sandy Bay and Exmouth, the route will be simplified and become more direct.

Buses from Sandy Bay will operate the current route as far as Littleham Cross and then non-stop via Salterton Road to Exmouth Pavilion, before continuing via the current route to Exmouth Leisure Centre.

The section of route along Cranford Avenue, Douglas Avenue, The Maer and Queens Drive will no longer be served, however, passengers for Cranford Avenue can use Service 357 and passengers for Douglas Avenue can use Services 97 and 357. There will be no service to The Maer and Queens Drive, however, alternative stops are available nearby.

While early morning and evening journeys on Service 99 will connect into Service 57 journeys, without the need to change bus, at other times, passengers will need to change buses in Exmouth Town Centre for onward travel via a short walk between the bus stops at Rolle Street and Exmouth Parade.

Service 173 (Exeter – Moretonhampstead via Tedburn St Mary and Chagford)

Timing changes are introduced Monday to Saturday to improve reliability and punctuality.

Within Exeter City Centre, buses will follow a more direct route from Sidwell Street to High Street and Fore Street and will no longer serve New North Road and Queen Street, which will reduce journey times and improve punctuality.

Service 343 (Tiverton – Cotteylands – Tiverton)

1515 Monday to Friday Schooldays journey from Tiverton High School to Tiverton Bus Station will now operate via the standard route, departing Morrisons at 1524, due to low demand for travel from Tiverton High School.

Additional Service 352 journeys will operate at 1115 and 1345, plugging gaps in the current timetable.

Electric buses will be 'transformative' - council

East Yorkshire Bus being driven in Hull city centre

The existing diesel powered buses operated by Stagecoach and East Yorkshire Buses will be replaced by an electric fleet

  • Published 4 hours ago

The Department for Transport has announced £5.7m of funding to support the rollout of electric buses across East Yorkshire.

The money, which forms part of the government's Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas scheme, will go towards the cost of 40 electric buses and charging equipment.

Officials said the fleet would help improve air quality and make buses more appealing.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the funding was in addition to £57m allocated for 260 electric buses for the wider Yorkshire and Humber region.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transportation, roads and highways at Hull City Council, said the announcement would have a "transformative impact".

He added: “There are currently no electric or hybrid buses operating on public bus services in Hull so, in addition to the environmental benefits, the new vehicles will have a wider impact by changing how our residents, and visitors to the city, see buses and help encourage, and increase, passenger demand.”

The greener buses will replace diesel ones on public routes operated by Stagecoach and East Yorkshire Buses, officials said.

'Major step forward'

Councillor Paul West, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Taking the bus instead of using cars already helps cut down on CO2 emissions, but this announcement is a major step forward in making public transport the most environmentally friendly way to travel.”

Further money for the vehicles will come from Hull City Council, Stagecoach and East Yorkshire Buses later this year.

Stagecoach said it aims to have a zero-emission fleet by 2035.

The latest announcement follows a government promise to reallocate £2.5bn of funding from the scrapped HS2 project to improve transport across the North of England.

Newcastle Airport night bus service launched to help make holidaymakers' travel easier

  • Newcastle Airport
  • Tuesday 19 March 2024 at 12:53pm

Newcastle Airport.

A new night bus service has been launched to help people get to Newcastle International Airport.

Transport bosses in the North East revealed plans for a six-month trial of a new bus service aimed at helping holidaymakers and shift workers.

The bus will be operated by Stagecoach but has been publicly funded through the North East’s £163.5 million Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), plus a financial contribution from the airport itself.

News of the experimental service, which could be made permanent if demand is high enough, comes just days after Newcastle City Council announced a crackdown on “illegal, inconsiderate, and dangerous” parking around the airport.

Details about the overnight service

The 787 bus will operate between the hours of 2.50am and 5.20am – starting Sunday 24 March.

The route will start at Newgate Street in the centre of Newcastle before taking in the West Road, Westerhope, Newbiggin Hall, and then the airport.

A single journey on the night bus will cost £2 for adults, or £1.80 for a short trip of less than 2km, and £1 for young people aged 21 and under.

Councillor Marion Williams, the cabinet member for transport, said: “Newcastle Airport is an extremely busy transport hub, operating 24 hours a day and with passengers and staff often needing to travel to and from the site at night and in the early hours when public transport options are limited.

“This new night bus, between Newcastle city centre and Newcastle Airport, is intended to fill that gap by providing a service at times when people might otherwise find travelling more of a challenge.

“This is one of a number of ways that we, together with regional partners, are hoping to improve access to convenient, affordable and reliable public transport services.”

Graeme Mason, chief sustainability and communications officer at Newcastle International Airport, said: “We are delighted that this new service will be launching in time for the upcoming busy summer season. It will not only provide an alternative transport option for passengers departing from the airport early in the morning, but will also open up employment opportunities for people living along its route.”

Newcastle City Council is proposing turning the B6918 Ponteland Road and Callerton Lane into ‘red routes’ where drivers are prohibited from stopping.

Civic centre officials claim that drivers are ignoring the double yellow lines already on those roads and disturbing residents by parking outside their homes while waiting to pick people up from the airport.

Northumberland councillor Gordon Stewart said he could understand the concerns but feared the council’s move would “not show our area’s international airport in a welcoming way” and risked simply pushing drivers onto roads over the border into his county instead.

He added: “Another major concern is people may be getting dropped off or collected by the roadside outside the airport which would be dangerous.”

The only free parking available at the airport itself is in the Short Stay 2 car park, where drivers can park without charge for up to 15 minutes only.
