Washington DC

Washington is named after George Washington, the first President of the United States and the founding father. The federal district is named for Columbia, a feminine avatar for the United States.

Today, Washington, D.C., is a 68-square-mile federal district, which is home to major government buildings, including the United States Capitol, which houses the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives; the White House, where the first United States President lived and worked; and the Supreme Court Building, which makes many of the courts major decisions. School Trips in DC: What Visitors Need to Know

Participating in one of the multi-day school trips in DC is a right-of passage for many 8th graders across the U.S. If you are not visiting with one of these groups but coming to DC between mid-March and mid-June, these are a few things you need to know.

Washington DC Field Trip Season, Explained

What is school field trip season?

School trips in DC are a huge part of the local tourism industry. Most schools send eighth grade class trips. This is why you will also occasionally hear referred to as “eighth grade field trip season”. Eighth grade is usually the class that gets to come to DC because it’s a final reward before the kids head off to high school.

Trip Hacks DC offers tours specifically designed for school groups . We have led tours with students in fifth grade all the way up to 12th grade. Our tours are best for small schools who don’t pay for an all-inclusive package. For large schools, these services might make more sense.

When is school field trip season?

School group trips in DC typically happen at one of two times during the year. The big one is in the spring, roughly from mid-March through mid-June. There is also a secondary field trip season in the fall roughly from early October through Thanksgiving.

If you’re trying to avoid field trip season the months you want to consider for your trip are: December, January, and February in the winter, and July, August, and September in the summer. Most schools choose to come in the spring because it’s an end-of-the-school-year reward. Plus, the students get to spend all school year learning about social studies and history and then they get to come to DC and see things up close.

Fall field trip season is much less busy since most schools don’t want to do the trip at the beginning of the school year.

How will field trip season impact your trip?

The most important thing to know is that school groups travel together in large packs. So, if you are visiting the memorials, there might be four groups of 50 students or more at once. This can really change the feel of some of the sites, particularly smaller memorials like the Vietnam and Korean War memorials.

School groups are only in DC for a limited amount of time. They need to maximize that time as best as possible. That means that during the day they’re going to be at the sites that are only open from 10 to 5. This includes the museums and the other indoor sites. Then, after dinner, they are going to head out and tour the monuments and memorials. This is because there are not a lot of evening activities you can do with big groups of teenagers.

The bottom line is that if you’re visiting during spring field trip season you’re going to be sharing those monuments and sites with a lot of other people.

Where do field trip groups eat?

As far as restaurants go, school trips groups in DC tend to stick to a limited number of places. For lunch they go to food courts. The food courts at Union Station, L’Enfant Plaza, the Reagan Building, and Pentagon City Mall are all popular choices. Food courts are ideal for school groups because they’re cheap and they give the students a lot of different choices. For dinner, they go to the inexpensive restaurants that can accommodate groups. This includes places such as the Hard Rock Cafe, Buca di Beppo, Carmine’s, and similar chain places.

Where do school groups stay?

School groups usually stay at suburban hotels because they travel on charter buses. Thus they do not need to be near Metro. Suburban hotels usually offer group rates to schools. Although, you will occasionally see school groups staying downtown, especially if they’re a small group who doesn’t have a charter bus. So if you plan to stay at a downtown hotel and eat at mostly local restaurants, you are probably not going to bump into too many of these groups at those places.

Taking 8th Graders to Washington DC: A Teacher’s Perspective

8th graders

View of the National Mall, Washington D.C. (photo awesomedc.com)

About the Author:     This is a guest post by  Susan Crawford, an 8th grade Social Studies teacher with the Schenectady City School District , Schenectady, NY. She has been teaching there for 16 years. She has a B.A. in Social Studies and a M.S. in Reading, both from the University of Albany.  She has been going on trips with 8th graders from Schenectady for 13 years.

Traveling   with   8th   Graders

This past May, we took 43 8 th graders to Washington, DC for three days.  It was my 14 th trip with 8 th graders and our 3rd with Scholastica Travel.  It is always a challenge taking middle schoolers on such a trip.  This year we also had with us a student who had some physical challenges.  We were very fortunate that Scholastica met every one of our requests for him, checking on accommodations, restaurants and other venues we would be visiting.

8th graders

Our tour guide, Mike Epstein, works very hard to make the trip memorable for our students.  Many have never been to Washington or have traveled outside of New York, so we want this trip to be extra special.  Mike gives them so many interesting and unique facts about the places we will be seeing and visiting that they are still talking about the trip weeks after we return home.   He checks with us to make sure we are doing what we want and what fits in with our curriculum.  It certainly helps that Mike is a former educator and can relate to our students.

This year was my last year as coordinator for the 8 th grade trip.  I feel very comfortable in recommending MaryLynn and Scholastica to the teachers who will continue Mont Pleasant’s tradition of taking our 8 th graders on their trip.

Thanks Scholastica, for giving our students memories that they will keep with them always.

School Trip to Washington, D.C. Cost

School trip to washington, d.c. cost.

What is the the cost of a school trip to Washington, D.C? This is a question that we often receive from trip organizers when they are planning a trip to DC for their students. Our answer? A school trip to Washington, D.C can vary in cost based on transportation, meals, desired passenger count and more. Our goal at GO Educational Tours is to always off the most affordable DC school trip package cost to our travelers.

Below are some variables that can change your desired trips cost. Our travel specialists can help customize and personalize your DC trip's cost proposal. From choosing the inclusions to the passenger count, everything is up to the trip organizer.

Distance from Washington, D.C.

Desired passenger count , trip inclusions, hotel selection (downtown or suburban) , desired length of trip .

The trip cost will be greatly impacted by your distance from DC. A group from California for example will be flying and and group from North Carolina might be getting to DC directly by motorcoach. The choice to fly and drive will have an impact on the school trip cost.

Desired Passenger Count

Group travel offers great benefits as all the passengers take on a small part of a larger cost. A full motorcoach will mean a lower cost per paying student passenger. The larger the group size the better pricing we can offer. Most vendors will offer great pricing  the larger the group size and we pass on these savings to the group.

Washington DC offers many free attractions. The museums of the Smithsonian Institution and the government buildings and memorials are all free of admission. This makes DC very attractive. There are however some museums and attractions that do have paid admissions. For example the International Spy Museum is one or the Newseum. Mount Vernon is also another has the fees go to maintaining this precious heritage for future generations. Also meals can impact pricing. We prefer a nicer sit down meal for dinner and on the go lunches in some case. You can choose to have a full meal plan or have students pay for some meals on site.

Hotel Selection (Downtown or Suburban)

DC offers a variety of hotels ranging from downtown to just outside the district to all the way to Dulles airport. The closer to DC the higher hotels prices are. You can have budget properties when you are 10-15 miles outside the city. Traffic is an increasing factor. So if time is of the essence we recommend staying closer to downtown.

Desired Length Of Trip

The more days you spend in DC the more the higher the trip cost. For example the difference between a 3 day DC school trip and a 4 day DC school can be about $150 more. This is a rough estimate we base on a base package.

Our 3 day trips range from $400 to $600 based on the different variables mentioned above. A four day Washington DC school trip will be in the $600 to $900 range. These rough prices exclude airfare of course.

If you have any questions about school trip cost to Washington DC cost please contact our team and we will be happy to design a trip for you and your students.

The Essential Checklist: Avoiding Commonly Forgotten Items when Packing

When preparing for a trip, it is important to consider the clothing requirements and restrictions that may be in place. Certain destinations or activities may have specific guidelines that travelers must adhere to for safety or cultural reasons. It is essential to pack appropriately to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip.

Research the destination:

Before packing your bags, it is crucial to research the destination. Find out about the weather conditions, cultural norms, and any specific clothing restrictions that may be in place. Different destinations may have different requirements, so it is vital to gather accurate information.

Consider the weather:

The weather plays a significant role in determining what to pack for any trip. Check the average temperatures, precipitation levels, and fluctuations in weather patterns. This will help you pack the appropriate clothing to stay comfortable throughout your journey.

If you are traveling to a destination with extreme weather conditions, such as hot deserts or cold mountain regions, you may need specialized clothing. For instance, if you plan to visit a tropical rainforest, lightweight and breathable clothing that offers protection from insects and moisture would be ideal.

Pack versatile clothing:

Opt for clothing items that can be easily mixed and matched. This will save space in your luggage. Choose outfits that can be dressed up or down, allowing you to adapt to different occasions effortlessly. Selecting versatile clothing will also ensure that you are prepared for unexpected changes in weather or activities.

Respect the local culture:

When visiting destinations with conservative cultures or religious sites, it is important to dress modestly out of respect for the local customs. It is advisable to cover your shoulders, chest, and knees in such settings. It is courteous to research and adhere to the cultural norms of the country you are visiting to avoid any unwanted attention or offense.

For example, when visiting temples in Asian countries like Thailand or India, it is customary to wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. In Islamic countries, women may need to cover their heads and wear loose-fitting clothing.

Check for safety guidelines:

Some adventure activities may have specific clothing requirements for safety reasons. For instance, if you plan to go hiking, it is essential to have proper hiking shoes, comfortable clothing, and layers to protect against changing weather conditions.

Water sports often require specific attire like wetsuits or rash guards to protect against cold water or sunburn. Always check for any safety guidelines provided by the activity organizers and ensure you have the appropriate clothing and gear to participate safely.

In conclusion, it is important to do thorough research and consider various factors when packing for a trip. Understand the weather conditions, cultural norms, and any specific clothing restrictions that may be in place. Pack versatile clothing that can adapt to different situations and respect the local culture. While safety guidelines for specific activities should always be followed, it is equally important to prioritize comfort, enjoyment, and respect for the places you visit.

Essential Items to Pack for Your Trip to Washington, D.C

When planning a trip to Washington, DC, it's important to consider the weather conditions that you can expect during your stay. The weather in DC can vary throughout the year, with each season bringing its own unique climate. By understanding what kind of weather to expect, you can pack accordingly and ensure that you are prepared for the conditions.

Spring (March to May) is considered one of the best times to visit DC, as the city begins to bloom with cherry blossoms and the temperatures are pleasant. However, it is also a volatile season with fluctuating temperatures. Average temperatures in March range from 45 to 60°F (7 to 16°C), while in May they can reach up to 77°F (25°C). To prepare for this season, pack a mix of light layers such as t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, light sweaters, and jackets. It's also a good idea to have a small umbrella handy, as spring showers are common.

Summer (June to August) in DC can be hot and humid, with temperatures often soaring above 90°F (32°C). It's important to pack lightweight and breathable clothing, such as shorts, skirts, t-shirts, and sundresses. Don't forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. It's also a good idea to carry a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated during your outdoor activities.

Fall (September to November) is another popular time to visit DC, as the temperatures start to cool down and the city is adorned with beautiful fall foliage. The average temperatures in September range from 62 to 80°F (17 to 27°C), but by November, they drop to around 40 to 60°F (4 to 16°C). Pack a mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve shirts, light jackets, and sweaters. It's a good idea to have a waterproof jacket or umbrella with you, as the fall season can bring occasional rain showers.

Winter (December to February) in DC can be cold and sometimes snowy. Average temperatures range from 30 to 50°F (-1 to 10°C). Layering is key during this season, so pack thermal base layers, sweaters, heavy jackets, scarves, and gloves. It's also a good idea to have waterproof boots to navigate any snow or slush that may accumulate on the streets.

In addition to the seasonal variations, it's also important to consider the specific weather conditions during your trip. Checking the weather forecast a few days before your departure will give you a better idea of what to expect. This will allow you to make any necessary adjustments to your packing list.

To summarize, when planning a trip to Washington, DC, it's important to consider the weather for the time of your visit. Pack a mix of clothing options to accommodate the varying temperatures and potential rain showers. Remember to pack sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses for the summer months, and waterproof jackets and boots for the winter months. By packing accordingly, you can fully enjoy your trip to the nation's capital, regardless of the weather conditions.

Essential Items to Pack for a Memorable Cross Country Road Trip

When planning a trip, it is essential to pack the right documents and items to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. Whether you are traveling domestically or internationally, there are several important documents and items that you should bring along. In this article, we will discuss some of these crucial items and provide you with a comprehensive packing list for your next adventure.

Passport and Identification:

If you are traveling internationally, your passport will be the most important document to bring. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of your departure. Additionally, carry a copy of your passport and keep it separate from the original. Along with your passport, bring other forms of identification such as a driver's license or national ID card.

Travel Insurance:

Having travel insurance is highly recommended, as it can provide coverage for unexpected medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other unforeseen circumstances. Keep a copy of your insurance policy handy, along with emergency contact numbers.

Visa and Entry Permits:

If you are traveling to a country that requires a visa or entry permit, make sure to obtain it before your departure. Some countries offer visas on arrival, but it is always better to check the specific requirements and regulations of your destination well in advance.

Itinerary and Reservations:

Print or save electronic copies of your travel itinerary, accommodation reservations, and any tickets or confirmations related to your trip. This information will be handy if you encounter any issues during your journey or if you need to provide proof of your travel plans.

Health Documents and Medications:

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or require specific medications, ensure that you have the necessary documentation, prescriptions, and an ample supply of medications for the duration of your trip. It is also a good idea to research any vaccinations or health precautions recommended for your destination and carry relevant documents for proof if required.

Currency and Payment Methods:

Depending on your destination, it is advisable to carry some local currency for immediate expenses upon arrival. Additionally, bring a debit or credit card that can be used internationally. Inform your bank about your travel plans to ensure your card is not blocked due to suspected fraudulent activity.

Communication and Electronics:

Bring your mobile phone and charger, along with any necessary adapters for charging in different countries. Consider purchasing an international SIM card or activating an international roaming plan to stay connected while abroad. It can also be helpful to carry a power bank for recharging your devices on the go.

Travel Guides and Maps:

To make the most of your trip, bring along travel guides, maps, or any other resources that provide information about your destination. These can be helpful for finding your way around, discovering hidden gems, or understanding local customs and etiquette.

Comfort and Safety Essentials:

Do not forget to pack essentials that will ensure your comfort and safety during the trip. This includes clothing suitable for the weather and activities, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, toiletries, and any personal items you may need.

Miscellaneous:

Other important items to consider include a small first aid kit, a photocopy of your important documents, a travel lock, a portable umbrella, and a reusable water bottle.

Remember to double-check your packing list to ensure you have everything you need before leaving for your trip. By bringing the necessary documents and items, you can have peace of mind and enjoy your journey to the fullest. Safe travels!

Where to Pack What: A Guide to Packing for Air Canada

When embarking on a trip, there are a plethora of additional items that can greatly enhance the experience and make the journey more enjoyable. Whether you're venturing into the great outdoors or exploring a bustling city, having the right gear and accessories can make all the difference. Let's take a look at some of the items that you may want to consider packing for your next adventure.

A camera is an essential item for capturing the memories of your trip. Whether you're a professional photographer or simply enjoy snapping photos as a hobby, a good camera can help you capture the beauty and essence of your surroundings. A DSLR or mirrorless camera will provide you with high-quality images, while a compact camera or even a smartphone can still produce impressive photos. Don't forget to bring extra memory cards and batteries to ensure that you never miss a shot.

Comfortable Walking Shoes:

Exploring a new destination often involves a lot of walking, so it's crucial to have a pair of comfortable shoes that can handle the miles. Look for shoes that offer good arch support, cushioning, and a sturdy sole. Depending on the terrain you'll be encountering, you may want to consider hiking boots for outdoor adventures or lightweight sneakers for urban exploration. Taking care of your feet will help prevent blisters and ensure that you can keep going for longer without discomfort.

Travel Adapter:

In our increasingly connected world, having a travel adapter is essential if you plan on using electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, or cameras. Different countries have different plug outlets, so having a universal travel adapter will ensure that you can charge your devices no matter where you are. This small but mighty device is a lifesaver for staying connected and documenting your journey.

Portable Charger:

On long days filled with exploration, it's easy for your phone or camera battery to drain quickly. To avoid being left without power, a portable charger is a must-have item. Portable chargers come in various sizes and capacities, so choose one that suits your needs. They are lightweight and can easily fit in your pocket or bag, ensuring you have a backup power source to keep your devices alive.

First Aid Kit:

While we hope for the best during our travels, accidents and minor injuries can happen. Having a basic first aid kit on hand can provide peace of mind and allow you to address minor cuts, scrapes, or headaches quickly. Include items such as band-aids, antiseptic wipes, painkillers, and any necessary medications. It's always better to be prepared and have the necessary supplies readily available.

Portable Water Bottle:

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when traveling or exploring new environments. A portable water bottle is the perfect travel companion, allowing you to refill it on the go and avoid single-use plastic bottles. Look for a bottle that is durable, leak-proof, and easy to carry. Many bottles also come with built-in filters, so you can have access to clean drinking water no matter where you are.

These are just a few additional items that can enhance your travel experience and make your trip more enjoyable. Before packing, consider the specific activities and destinations you'll be encountering, and tailor your gear accordingly. Whether it's capturing beautiful moments, staying comfortable, or being prepared for the unexpected, having the right items with you can truly enhance your journey. So, pack your bags, grab your camera, and embark on your next adventure!

8th Grade Washington DC Trip: It’s Back!

8th grade trip to dc

This article was written by Allie Bourgeois, a student in Journalism class.

For the first time in three years, U32 teachers will bus their way to Washington D.C. along with the eighth-grade class this coming June.

The school has been traveling to D.C. in some way since the mid-70s, but the tradition of an eighth-grade graduation trip is more recent.

Sue Verchereau, Administrative Assistant in the middle school office, can’t remember exactly when it began. When she started working here in 2002, the yearly trip, started by Sally DeCicco, had already been happening for some two decades.

“We’re not 100% sure exactly when it started; the school had some of our data hacked last year [and we lost] our [records of] previous itineraries and things like that for DC,” said assistant principal Amy Molina. “[But] our best guess is the late 80s, early 90s.”

Amy and Sue have been working together to plan the entire DC trip for over a decade.

“[Sue] takes the lead on the financial part of it and making sure that we raise the money we need to raise and that we’re helping families and kids. I’m more on the logistics side of it. I organize the itinerary and make all the contacts with all the different places that we go,” said Amy.

Sue’s office window as she organizes chaperone groups for the trip

Sue organizes 4-5 fundraisers a year to help kids gather money needed for the trip. It’s not required that students fundraise the money needed to go on the trip, but the option is there for those who need it. If, by the time the trip comes around, a student still needs financial help, they can dip into their grades’ scholarship fund. (The scholarship fund is extra money collected from fundraising for the DC trip.)

“[The trip] is a great culminating activity for eighth graders because so much of what happens in DC is directly tied to the eighth-grade curriculum,” said Amy. The Civil Rights, Holocaust, and systems of government units covered in the curriculum build up to the museums and memorials visited in D.C.

A cornerstone of the trip is a visit to the National Mall. From there, students have a chance to visit all of the Smithsonian Museums, see the monuments along the green, and tour the Capitol Building. They’ll also see a show, Shear Madness this year, at the Kennedy Center.

But planning this year has been different. It’s a lot more expensive and a lot more difficult.

“Costs have gone up a ton, specifically [with] the buses, but [with] meals and the cost to stay at Marymount University [as well],” said Amy. “[It’s] a lot more expensive to go than we were expecting. In the past, I think we paid [roughly] $24,000 for our buses. [This year it was] $36,000.”

The price students pay to go on the trip has increased as well. In 2019, it was $680. This year, it was $720, and it will continue to increase as $720 didn’t cover the costs. They’re using leftover money from the scholarship fund and contributions to pay for the trip as best they can. The difference, if any, will be covered by the school.

It’s also been more difficult to get into museums. Previously, groups could come and go as they pleased but this year Amy had to reserve specific time slots for visiting.

On top of planning, Sue expects that the trip itself might be more difficult too.

“It’s going to be exciting [but] a tiny bit frustrating to take them because they might not have the skills to be out in a big group. They just didn’t have the experiences older kids would have,” said Sue. “A lot of them haven’t traveled [in a while] because you couldn’t for a long time.”

Another concern is the number of students not traveling. “It looks like 84 students are going this year; that would be 16 not going,” said Sue. Although this is a normal occurrence, every year she is “sort of befuddled about it [because it’s] a wonderful opportunity.”

As well as being a “wonderful opportunity,” Sue views the trip as a rite of passage. “It’s [great for] students who are just getting ready to step up to high school. They’re really right to have an experience on a college campus,” said Sue.

For Amy, the trip is about teaching students about the world.

“I think school in general, it’s not just learning about how to be a better mathematician or how to spell hard words. It’s [learning] how you [are] a part of our world. And I think that one way to do that is through experiences,” she said. “We have a lot of kids at U32 that if we didn’t take the DC trip, may never leave Vermont, may never go to Washington, DC. Getting your eyes open to a bigger world is a huge part of this [trip]. That’s why I love doing [it],”

The DC trip didn’t happen in 2020 or 2021 because of the pandemic. Last year, in 2022, it was scheduled but then canceled due to complications with planning. (DC hadn’t fully opened up from the pandemic just yet; Premier Transportation, the bus company they use, wouldn’t take them; and Marymount University, where they’ve always stayed, wasn’t open to visitors.)

Sue noted that it was a lot harder to garner excitement about the trip. She attributes this to not having a “trickle down” of excitement from upperclassmen. The graduating class this year was the last grade to go on the trip.

This year, the plans haven’t changed much. They’ll begin their ten-hour bus ride at 6:30 the night of Monday, June 6, and return back to U32 in the early hours of the following Saturday. They’ll still have all of the fun past grades have had exploring DC’s museums, monuments, and shopping centers, as well as attending shows and eating out.

“I’m super excited to go,” said Sue. “I’m excited to take this group of kids. This is like the first normal year that they’ve had in three years.”

Q:  When is the trip ?

A :   The 8th grade Washington D.C. trip runs from March 13 (8 pm departure) - March 17 (Saturday morning return).

Q:   How much is the trip ?

A:  This year's trip cost is $672.00

Q:  Is this trip mandatory for my 8th grade child ?

A:   No.  The 8th grade Washington D.C. trip is voluntary, though we believe it will be a  wonderful learning experience and we will miss not having your child with us.

Q:   What is the name of the company associated with this trip ?

A:   Student Adventures.  Click on the Student Adventures tab on the left for more info.

Q:   What are the eligibility requirements for my child to participate ?

A:    A student with a single day of suspension may  appeal to a building administrator who will consult with the DC trip committee for permission to attend.

Any student who receives more than one out- of-school or in-school suspension will be excluded from this trip .  Click the Student Eligibility tab at left for more info.

Q:   How do I sign my child up for the 8th grade Washington D.C. trip ?

A:   Please use the Sign Up for Trip tab at the left for instructions on how to sign up

Q:   What if I sign up my child and then have to cancel ?

A:     Please refer to the "Enhanced Cancellation Protector" section of the Parent Registration PDF found in the Helpful Documents tab.

Q:   Are parents allowed to sign up for the trip as chaperons ?

A:   At this time, we are not anticipating the need for parent chaperons.  The number of chaperons is partly dictated by the number of students participating.  At this stage of planning, we still do not know the final number of students enrolling for the trip.  We currently have 20+ staff members who have offered to act as chaperons should we need them.  Neighboring districts also call on their 7th grade and high school staff to act as chaperons for their 8th grade trips.  We do not know yet if that will be the case here. For now, we encourage parents interested in acting as chaperons to keep their calendars clear for the trip dates (May 2 - May 6) and put aside the necessary funds should the need for their services arise.  If we find ourselves needing extra chaperons, a fair and unbiased means of filling those positions will be presented.

Q:    Can parents drive to Washington D.C. on their own and see their kids ?

A:    Our nation is a public venue and families are welcome to visit Washington D.C. at the same time as their children.  However, students who go on this school trip MUST stay with the tour at all times.  Parents, for example, cannot "borrow" their child for the day, or even a portion of the day, while the child is on our trip.  If parents are in D.C. they may not travel with our tour or join us on our tour.  This is for liability reasons.  With the multitude of child custody issues that exist today, our tours are "closed" to anyone other than our chaperons and our students.  If parents are in the D.C. area, or if a student has family in the D.C. area who would like to see the child, we can arrange for a supervised visit during lunch.  However, in this situation, the individual(s) having a supervised lunch with our group must contact the Scranton office at least 14 days in advance of our trip and submit a copy of their drivers licence and fill out a volunteer information sheet.  Because our children travel in groups, anyone interacting with our students must undergo a complete background check...even to join us for lunch.

Q:   W ill there be fund-raising opportunities for my child ?

A:   Please use the Fund-raising Opportunities tab at the left for details.

Q:   What happens to the fundraising money ?

A:    Funds raised by individual students will be tracked on a spreadsheet by one of Scranton's secretaries.  Periodically, an e-mail with the most current spreadsheet will be sent to Student Adventures.  The funds listed will be credited to each individual student's account. Student Adventures   will then send an invoice for the sum owed, at which time, funds held by Scranton Middle School for those individuals will be sent to Student Adventures.   If the amount raised by the student exceeds the total amount of the trip, a refund will be made to SMS for the excess funds.  These funds will then be placed in an account to provide trip scholarships to students with financial needs.  If the family had already made a cash payment to Student Adventures, SMS will refund the family any "out of pocket" expenses before transferring the remaining funds into the scholarship account.  If a child cancels their trip, any dollars earned through fundraising are returned to SMS and deposited in the scholarship account.

Q:   W hat will my child be doing if he/she doesn't go on the trip ?

A:   As with several other details of the trip, the answer partly depends on the number of students going to Washington.   If a larger number of students participate, a proportionately larger number of staff will also be absent from school.  For the students staying behind, it is likely that a good portion of their three days will be spent participating in activities prepared by our 8th grade history department.  These activities will substitute for or mirror those found on the Washington trip, though some portion of each day may also be dedicated to their regular subjects (English, science, etc.). If a smaller number of students participate in the trip, it is likely that more of a regular schedule will be followed at school with classes being taught primarily by the regular staff members remaining behind.  As above, an effort will be made to provide activities similar in topic to those experienced in Washington. With either scenario, students will be under the supervision of professionals employed by Brighton Area Schools, whether they are the existing staff or substitute teachers.  Likewise, in the event that a substitute teacher is needed, they will be provided with all the materials and lessons plans required, just as they are during any other teacher absence.

Q:  I have concerns about safety and security - where can I get answers ?

A:   For questions regarding safety and security, please click ( here ).

Q:   What if my child needs to take daily medications ?

A:    Once we get closer to knowing for certain how many students will will have, students will be required to fill out a medical form, even if they have no medical issues.  Once the student's chaperon is determined, that chaperon will be keeping track of which students in their care need to be given medication each day.

Q:   What if my child has life threatening allergies ?

A:   As with the procedure explained about for daily medications, once your child's chaperon has been identified, they will have all the information you have provided about your child's allergies.  Depending on the severity of the allergy, we may need to establish an allergen-free bus (we have done so in the past for peanuts).   Also,  under the Trip Itinerary tab, we have attempted to link the restaurants we visit so that you may contact them about the food choices that are available.

Q:  How much spending money do you recommend for students ?

A:   Student Adventures  recommends that students bring around $50.00.

Q:  What should my child pack for the trip ?

Q :  Do the same bus drivers drive for the entire 10-12 hour trip ?

Q:   What about the type of buses, accommodations, and the trip itinerary ?

Packing & Preparing

What to Bring:   Take all items  on board the bus  that you plan to use throughout the day, including  phones, cameras, jackets, and spending money (not required – keep to minimum). Please send healthy snacks and water.

You’ll also need to have a gym bag with you  on the bus.   Pack this with whatever you’ll need for the Freedom Center pool & recreation area.

Everything you’ll need at the hotel (sleepwear, toiletries, games, more snacks & drinks – water) goes in a bag that can be put in the  under-bus storage.  You won’t be able to access it throughout the day.

Medication  must be given to the chaperones before boarding.

Phones and other screens:   Students are responsible for their possessions, so use discretion.  Label these items with name and parent phone number in case they are misplaced.

What NOT to bring:   Don’t bring anything that isn’t allowed at school (weapons, alcohol, vapes, etc.).  All bags and luggage will be inspected. Please triple check that there are no prohibited items. If there are, you might not be able to attend the trip and school policy enforced.

Weather:   We will be outside and walking A LOT!  Wear comfortable shoes.  Check  the DC forecast  and pack accordingly, including jacket/rain coats.

Music and video:  Must be played through headphones. No flash photography after dark.  No laser lights.  Movies rated G or PG only.

Bag Checks and Student Screening:   Students and their luggage will pass through metal detectors and bag searches before boarding in the morning.  If anything is found that is prohibited from school (see the student handbook), your child will not be allowed to attend the trip.  Please TRIPLE CHECK that there are no items that would get them in trouble on their person, or in their luggage.

Student Safety is the most important aspect of this tour. The following procedures are in place to ensure safe travels:

  • School behavior standards will be upheld during the trip, and participation may be denied based on a student’s disciplinary record.
  • Chaperones and tour coordinators have required clearances. Most are district employees who know the students and are familiar with the places we visit.
  • Experienced tour coordinators travel with the group at all times. They explain meeting times, places, etc. in advance of each stop. They will alert students and chaperones to any changes that need to be made, and are in contact with the bus drivers at all times.
  • Students travel in groups with their roommates and their bus chaperones.
  • The places we visit have strict security and/or police on site.
  • Hotel rooms do not have exterior exits. Hotel rooms have landline phones and students are told how to contact chaperones during the night.
  • A security guard walks the halls all night. Mechanisms are put in place to ensure students do not visit one another’s rooms during the night.
  • Only experienced drivers are used, and we strictly follow federal laws pertaining to driver safety.

Walnut 8th graders learn history during Washington D.C. trip

WASHINGTON (KSNB) - Several eighth grade students from Grand Island are spending their spring break taking in the sights of the nation’s capitol.

Forty-five kids from Walnut Middle School, along with seven sponsors, are checking out Washington, D.C. and the Gettysburg Battlefield. It’s all thanks to a grant from the American Battlefield Trust’s Field Trip Fund.

The grants are awarded based on a competitive national application process.

Every year, classrooms around the country submit paperwork to receive this money for teachers to plan field trips to Civil War, War of 1812, or Revolutionary War battlefields and related historic sites.

Eighth Grade American Studies Teacher Tyler Madison said he looked forward to giving the students the opportunity to walk where history was made.

“My hope is that this trip sparks an interest and curiosity that lasts long after they’ve left our school. Helping bring this history to life for my students is always a highlight of my year,” he said.

The American Battlefield Trust is the largest battlefield land preservation organization in the country, having saved more than 52,000 acres of hallowed ground across 24 states. Through visiting preserved battlefields and walking in the footsteps of the citizen soldiers who fought there, the Trust aims to provide a foundation of good citizenship for the leaders of tomorrow. The Trust strives to produce excellent educational resources in a variety of formats for both educators and the public alike, ensuring that Americans never forget how their country was forged.

During the 2018-2019 school year, more than 7,500 students from 24 states took part.

“These kids get a chance to go to where history was made, where our country was created and defined,” said Trust President David Duncan of Field Trip Fund recipients, “Battlefields are outdoor classrooms that will teach future Americans about our democratic republic.”
