A new regulation has been issued by the Spanish Ministry of Health, dealing with the health measures to be implemented and concerning the travellers arriving in Spain. In this regard, it is mandatory for prospective travellers to know about the following:

  • All passengers arriving in Spain, may it by air or sea, will undergo a health check carried out by Spanish authorities before entering the country. These controls may include a temperature check as well as a documentary and a visual assessment of passengers’ condition.
  • Before initiating the travel to Spain all passengers originating from any airport or port must complete a public health form. It can be done online at www.spth.gob.es or through the free application: SPAIN TRAVEL HEALTH-sp TH. Once the form is filled-in, the person concerned will receive a QR code, which you will have to show upon arrival in Spain.
  • A transitional period is established, until July 31 , 2020, in which international passengers who have not been able to complete the public health form electronically may fill it and present it upon arrival in Spain in paper format.

PLEASE BE GUIDED ACCORDINGLY & ALWAYS STAY SAFE.

How to apply for a Spain visa from Egypt

How to apply for a Spain visa from Egypt

Steps to apply for a Spain visa from Egypt

1) discover what is a spain visa and requirements for egyptian citizens and residents.

  • Before you begin the application process for your Spain visa from Egypt, you should familiarize yourself with the basics of the visa and its requirements.
  • There are numerous Spain visas and types, but a Spain Schengen visa is the best option for most Egyptians. This is because it guarantees entry to Spain for a maximum of 90 days within a 180 period. Furthermore, a Schengen visa is for the Egypt citizens and residents who would also like to travel throughout the Schengen zone, which, in addition to Spain, includes states like France, Germany, and Italy (27 countries in total).
  • You should apply for a Schengen Spain visa from Egypt if you feel you can meet the requirements outlined in the subsequent steps.

2) Pick the best time to apply for your Spain visa from Egypt

  • Consider that the processing time on an application for a Spain visa from Egypt can range anywhere from 15-60 days. Before starting your application, make sure that you have enough time to apply. Avoid applying later than two weeks before you need to travel, but don’t wait longer than six months to submit an application (as those submitted in advance of six months tend to be rejected).

3) Learn where to apply for a Schengen visa from Egypt

  • You will likely apply for your Spain visa from Egypt through the Spanish Embassy in Cairo and its affiliated visa application centers. A Spain Schengen visa for the Egypt citizens and residents living outside of Cairo is also available, through the services provided by SchengenVisas.com. To find out the best location for you to apply for a Spain visa from Egypt, please click here and contact us.

4) Select one of the Spain visas and types for Egypt passport holders

  • There are a variety of Spain visas and types you can choose from when you apply for your Spain visa for Egyptian, Schengen-bound travelers.
  • Your purpose of travel should guide your selection. For example, if you are traveling to Spain in order to have surgery at a hospital in Madrid, you should apply for a Medical Spain visa from Egypt. Another example: if you are traveling simply to see the sights in Barcelona, you should apply for a Tourist Spain visa from Egypt.
  • To see all the types of Spain visa from Egypt, please visit this link .

5) Choose an entry category for the Spain visa for Egypt citizens and residents

  • A single entry Schengen visa is for Egyptian citizens and residents who only need a single entry to the zone, while a double entry allows two entries. A third—multiple entry—grants an unlimited number of entries and exits to the Schengen area. You must select one of these entry categories—single, double, multiple—when you apply for your visa.
  • Because it allows for unlimited journeys in and out of the zone, the multiple entry category for the Spain visa from Egypt is the most ideal for most travelers. In contrast, the single entry is the most restrictive, as once you enter the zone on a single-entry, you will not be allowed to reenter it (even if there is time left on your 90-day visa). Double entry holders may return to the zone after exiting it once but are restricted from re-entering—should the exit a second time.

6) Access your visa application for how to apply for a Spain visa from Egypt

  • The Spain Schengen visa application is accessible (for download, print out, and signature) here .
  • On your Schengen visa form, you will fill out your biographical and passport details and also indicate your preferences for visa type, entry category, and main destination (Spain).
  • Please fill out this form in Spanish (or English), submit it with the documents outlined in step 7. Consider that any documents written in Arabic (or another language) will likely need to be submitted alongside a translation into English or Spanish in order to be accepted.

7) Assemble your required documents and learn how much does a Spain visa cost

  • Basic Spain Schengen visa application (mentioned above)
  • Passport photos (2)
  • Proof of accommodation (where you will stay in Spain)
  • Proof of travel (evidence you will ultimately leave Spain)
  • Proof of travel medical insurance (required in case you experience a health emergency in Spain)
  • Proof of finances (evidence you can financially support yourself in Spain)
  • Most applicants for the Spain visa from Egypt are responsible for Spain visa fees. 80 EUR is the set cost of most Schengen visas however some applicants pay less due to factors relating to age and reason for travel. Applicants will likely need to pay their fees in USD (rather than EUR or Egyptian Pounds). To anticipate your visa fees, please click here .
  • In almost all cases, travelers must submit supplemental documents in addition to the above. The type of Spanish visa you selected on your application will determine the supplemental documents you must submit in order to meet the Spain visa requirements for Egyptian passport holders and residents. For example, if you wish to apply for a Medical Schengen visa for Egyptian citizens/residents, you will need to submit a note from your doctor as well as other relevant information pertaining to the surgery/treatment/procedure you intend to have in Spain.
  • For help identifying your required/supplemental documents for your Spain visa from Egypt, please contact us.

8) Attend a visa appointment for how to get a Spain visa from Egypt

  • Submit your complete Spain visa from Egypt application (all documents and materials)
  • Submit your biometrics (photos and fingerprints)
  • Pay your Spain visa fees
  • Sit for a visa interview
  • Applicants should schedule their visa appointment ahead of time (rather than simply show up at the application center expecting to get an appointment.
  • Feel free to contact us to help you scheduling a Spain visa from Egypt appointment.

9) Processing time for a Spain Schengen visa

  • As noted above, those who apply for a Spain visa from Egypt should expect to wait around 15-30 days for a ruling on their application. Sometimes, however, 60 days are required to process a Spain visa for Egyptian citizens and residents.
  • If you are approved for a Spain visa from Egypt, you will receive your passport from your application destination (it will contain your new visa within it).

*10) (if relevant) Appeal a rejected Spain visa from Egypt

  • There are numerous factors that go into being approved for a Spain visa from Egypt. Rejected applicants may either appeal the ruling or re-apply. If you have been rejected for a Spain visa from Egypt, contact us for guidance on how to proceed.

When we compare the travel costs of actual travelers between Cairo and Madrid, we can see that Madrid is more expensive. And not only is Cairo much less expensive, but it is actually a significantly cheaper destination. Since Cairo is in Africa and Madrid is in Europe, this is one of the main reasons why the costs are so different, as different regions of the world tend to have overall different travel costs. So, traveling to Cairo would let you spend less money overall. Or, you could decide to spend more money in Cairo and be able to afford a more luxurious travel style by staying in nicer hotels, eating at more expensive restaurants, taking tours, and experiencing more activities. The same level of travel in Madrid would naturally cost you much more money, so you would probably want to keep your budget a little tighter in Madrid than you might in Cairo.

If you're trying to decide if either of these two destinations are within your price range, also see Is Cairo Expensive? and Is Madrid Expensive? .

Cairo has a larger population, and is about 2 times larger than the population of Madrid. When comparing the sizes of Cairo and Madrid, keep in mind that a larger population does not always imply the destination has more attractions or better activities. So, always research the type of place that you want to visit along with the activities and attractions that interest you.

The 8 best places to visit in Egypt

From diving the Red Sea’s crystal blue waters and stargazing amid the vastness of the desert to floating down the Nile River and standing in awestruck wonder before the ruins of one of the world’s most ancient civilizations... When it comes to travel experiences, Egypt is a destination that leaves visitors spoiled for choice.

With so much to see, the struggle for many visitors is just where to begin – as always, we’re happy to help! Here is our pick of the 8 best places to visit in Egypt.

Egypt’s bustling capital city is layered with cultural, religious, architectural and even culinary history. Its wonders stretch far beyond the walls of its famous museums. You can take in centuries worth of sights just by walking down the city streets, and discover untapped wonders just by saying hello to a stranger. Then there are the Pyramids of Giza , truly a wonder of the world.

At the epicenter of history in the core of the city is Islamic Cairo, the city's most atmospheric quarter. Just grab your camera and venture down its vibrant alleyways. Take in the views from the Citadel and the old city gates – known as Bab Zuweila , Bab al-Futuh and Bab an Nasr – and admire the intricate details of the area’s stunning mosques. The ancient Mosque of Muhammad Ali , Ibn Tulun Mosque and Al-Hakim Mosque are particularly incredible. Islamic Cairo is also home to monument-lined Muizz Street and Khan El-Khalili bazaar – great spots to grab some souvenirs (if your haggling skills are up to the task).

A more under-the-radar-spot is Coptic Cairo, home to the Coptic Museum , the Hanging Church , the towers of the vanished Babylon fortress – the focal point of Egypt’s tiny Christian minority since the first century CE.

Local tip: By night, Cairo transforms thanks to its buzzing nightlife scene – sip a drink in historic downtown bars or take in live performances at hip clubs and art spaces.

A Dugong with yellow fish ascending to the surface at Marsa Alam in Egypt

2. Marsa Alam

Life is definitely better when you’re scuba diving through colorful corals and swimming with dolphins, dugongs and sea turtles in Marsa Alam ’s beautiful blue waters. A serene escape on the western shore of the Red Sea, Marsa Alam is one of the top spots in Egypt for underwater escapes . Popular dive spots include the Elphinstone reef and Abu Dabbab, one of the world's top beaches for snorkeling .

For land-based adventures, head to Wadi el Gemal National Park, where you can lay back by the water at Hankorab Beach or safari, hike or bike through rugged, mountainous terrain. Keep an eye out for camels at Sharm El Luli Beach or take in the beautiful scenery at the resort town of Qulaan.

To learn about Marsa Alam’s local Bedouin community, visit the Ababda House Cultural Museum or have dinner and an aromatic cup of Jebena coffee with the locals.

Detour: If you're looking for interesting souvenirs, head to Ghosoun and Hamata and meet local tribeswomen making unique hand-woven crafts and jewelry (each tribe has its own unique patterns and styles).

Felucca on the river Nile in Egypt. Luxor, Africa.

The site of the magnificent ancient city of Thebes, Luxor is said to preserve a third of the world’s ancient monuments between the pillars of its majestic temples. Dubbed the world’s greatest open-air museum, the capital of Upper Egypt recently celebrated the grand reopening of the 2.7km (1.7 mile) Avenue of the Sphinxes, an ancient thoroughfare connecting Karnak Temple , home of the famed Temple of Amun-Ra , and the impressively preserved Luxor Temple .

A sunrise hot air balloon ride will give you a captivating bird's-eye view of this city of ancient wonders. Once you're back on the ground, head to Hatshepsut Temple and Medinet Habu – two massive ancient architectural wonders that feature prominently on travelers' Instagram feeds – and cross the river to the Valley of the Kings , the royal burial site of Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramses II.

Palm trees and patches of greenery cling to the dusty riverbanks of Aswan , one of Egypt’s most tranquil locations, celebrated for the unmatched hospitality of its Nubian community. Sail your way to any of the 20 river islands accessible by felucca, the traditional wooden sailboats that ply the river Nile.

To learn more about Nubian culture, visit the island of Gharb Soheil or stroll around the colorful streets of Aswan's Nubian Village. Sample homestyle veggie-based or chicken tagines in local cafes, or purchase aromatic spices from the vibrantly colorful Aswan spice market.

Aswan is famed for its stunning sunsets, which you can watch from any of the islands or while sailing the Nile on a felucca. Another top spot for watching the sunset is the restaurant at the iconic Sofitel Legend Old Catarac t where English author Agatha Christie penned her famous mystery, Death on the Nile .

Local tip: If you’re willing to wake up at 3am for the journey south across the desert, a day trip to Abu Simbel is a history buff’s dream; the whole temple complex was moved when the valley was flooded by the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. If you’d rather let the sun wake up before you, explore Aswan’s Temple of Isis , also moved from its original location on Philae Island.

White chalk rock formations in the White Desert, Egypt

5. Black and White Deserts

The appeal of Egypt’s Black and White Deserts is quite literally black and white. These monochrome landscapes are like something out of a sci-fi movie, but the surreal scenery is a product of natural geology – the White Desert’s uniquely shaped limestone rock formations give the illusion of a snowscape, while the Black Desert features small black volcanic stones scattered over bright orange-colored sand.

A visit to either of these desert areas is perfect for a stargazing camping trip – it's the ultimate escape for anyone who’s had their fill of temples and big city traffic. The White Desert and Black Desert lie just south of the Bahariya Oasis , in Egypt’s Western Desert , which is accessible by bus from Cairo.

Local tip: While you’re out there, make sure you visit Crystal Mountain, a natural rock arch surrounded by glittering walls of quartz crystals, and Djara Cave, one of the country's most impressive, stalactite-filled caves. You’ll need to crouch down to enter the cave, but once inside, the ceiling looks like it’s coated in giant icicles.

6. Egypt's Mediterranean Coast

Egypt’s northern shoreline – affectionately known as El Sahel, meaning "The Coast" – is the ultimate summer escape on the shores of the Mediterranean. This sun-kissed coastal strip comes alive from May to September every year, drawing hordes of beach bums by day, and a veritable who’s who of Egypt’s party people by night.

The strip is lined with luxurious hotels and resorts, upscale residential compounds and world-class restaurants such as The Smokery Beach at Stella di Mare  and  Kiki's Beach at Hacienda White. The shores of Sahel are where you’ll find most of Cairo’s millennial and Gen Z crowd on Egypt’s hottest summer days.

Woman looking at scenic view of Siwa oasis at sunset

7. Siwa oasis

Far removed from the mayhem of Egypt's big cities, this little gem of an oasis is home to Siwan Bedouin people who follow a largely traditional way of life, and the town has thus far been only lightly touched by tourism. The locals are Amazigh tribespeople, who have managed to preserve much of their linguistic and cultural heritage thanks to the isolated location of their oasis home.

Siwa is often described as "the Sunset Oasis", and its sunsets are indeed unparalleled in Egypt. Whether you find a vantage point atop Dakrour Mountain or the ruined Shali Fortress , or take in the scenery and serenity of Taghaghien Island or Fatnas Island, you’re promised an unforgettable sunset. You can also expect a lot of mosquitos, so don’t forget your repellent.

Siwa is a prime destination for tourists looking to escape the winter chill and it's a leaping off point for the Great Sand Sea (the world’s third-largest dune field), swimmable hot and cold springs and crystal clear salt lakes where you can float effortlessly, supported by the saline waters.

Siwa is also famed for producing some of the country’s best dates, and you may be able to sample straight from the tree – just ask locals first. Every November, Siwa holds the Siwi Palm Date Festival.

Local tip: Try the local Abu Mardem chicken or lamb – a spiced dish that’s marinated for eight hours before being put into an iron pot and buried under the sand to cook.

Nubian men smoking a water-pipe in Aswan, Southern Egypt

8. El Gouna

It’s always sunny in this fully-integrated little town along the pristine shoreline of the Red Sea, just north of Hurghada. El Gouna has become the base for a multinational community of digital nomads, young families, and expats convinced that life is better by the water.

El Gouna has great aquatic activities, and lots of options for hiking and safaris in the surrounding desert landscapes, appealing to younger travelers. It also has bougie boutiques, cultural events and top-tier culinary experiences thanks to its many upscale restaurants, appealing to an older set.

With its world-class services, restaurants and living spaces, it's a great place to visit but also a fine place to set up your seaside office. There are plenty of coworking spaces and solid wifi connections, and lots of ways to keep busy outside of work hours – why work from home when you can work from El Gouna?

The Best Places to Visit in Spain

Spain contains multitudes—seriously. Spanning 17 autonomous regions and two small enclaves in North Africa, the country is a cradle of diverse cultures, geography, traditions, even languages. And while there’s nothing wrong with a sun-and-sangria holiday, there’s so much more to see and do: embark on a luxury train ride across Spain’s mountainous north, go on a wine and architecture pilgrimage in Rioja, discover the sleepy side of Ibiza, and travel back in time to Andalucía’s Moorish past. The landscapes are just as diverse—from Lanzarote’s lunar lava plains to the lush archipelago of Islas Cíes and the stunning rock formations in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Reserve (Europe’s only desert!).

First-timers typically make a beeline for Madrid and Barcelona , but even then, most people will only scratch the surface of these cities and their surroundings. Just an hour outside Madrid are art-filled medieval castles, mountain hiking trails, a “ beach ” for beating the heat, and even an under-the-radar Picasso museum . Plus, there’s so much to see in Catalonia beyond Barcelona, not least the picturesque coves and charming seaside towns of the Costa Brava . One trip isn’t enough—Spain is a place to discover again and again.

Having a hard time deciding where to go first? Here are 10 trip ideas to get you started.

Madrid: A Feast for the Senses

The Spanish capital is having a moment, with a flurry of hot new restaurants like Tramo and Bao Li , the just-opened Royal Collections Gallery , and a crop of fabulous new and revamped hotels . There’s never been a better time to visit. Regardless of your travel plans, you’ll want to set aside time to stroll around the UNESCO-recognized El Retiro Park, which spans 308 acres of classical gardens, trickling fountains and lakes, and expansive green lawns perfect for beating the summer heat. The park itself is home to a clutch of stellar museums, but nothing compares to the nearby Museo Nacional Del Prado—one of the world’s most important institutions for European painting—or the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which houses Picasso’s Guernica, among other masterpieces. And don’t sleep on the galleries, either: there has been a wave of recent openings including the Malaga-born Badr el Jundi , the laboratory-like El Chico gallery, and the up-and-coming Arniches 26 .

Stay Here: Set inside a 19 th -century palace in the upscale Salamanca district, Rosewood Villa Magna exudes an air of hushed luxury. Still, it manages to feel very local and stitched into the fabric of the city—its restaurants and seasonal pop-up concepts are just as much of a hit among madrileños as out-of-towners. Don’t leave without enjoying a scalp-tingling treatment in the property’s fabulous new hair spa.

In recent years, Mallorca has shed its reputation as a package holiday destination and emerged as one of Spain’s most sophisticated hotspots. Now, the Balearic island is synonymous with art and culture, hip hotels, and stellar boutique shopping. Get in step with the island’s rhythms in the capital of Palma, home to indie shops like Arquinesia Perfumes and Cortana , lively bars and restaurants including Brutus and CAV , and one magnificent 14 th -century cathedral—the island’s most recognizable landmark. Learn about Mallorca’s rich craft traditions such as “llata” basket weaving and Ikat textile design by signing up for a workshop on the dada-days platform, or head to the mountain towns of Deià and Sóller to discover locally-made goods and artworks at creative businesses like Earth Core , Datura Studio Isla or the café-cum-ceramic-shop De Moniö .

Stay Here: Mallorca’s new kid on the block is the 14-room Portella Palma , launched by brother-and-sister team Enrique and Inés Miró-Sans of Barcelona’s Casa Bonay fame and designed by Parisian design duo Festen. Once the home of Spanish painter Joaquín Torrents, the 17 th -century palazzo still feels like an artist’s residence, with antique furniture, views of the city’s 11 th -century Arab Baths, and artful details around every corner—from a Joan Miró lithograph to custom pieces by 300-year-old Mallorcan glass company Gordiola.

Fresh Air and Bold Flavor in Asturias

Image may contain Landscape Nature Outdoors Scenery Mountain Mountain Range Peak Panoramic Grass and Plant

Northern Spain has long been overlooked by tourists, but the mountainous principality of Asturias is (finally) having its moment in the sun. A new high-speed train —20 years in the making—now links Madrid and Asturias, reducing the journey to just over 3 hours. And the capital city, Oviedo, has been named the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy in 2024 for its gastronomic delicacies ( fabada stew, hundreds of regional cheese varieties) and fabulous restaurants like NM by Michelin-feted chef Nacho Manzano, who also runs the region’s legendary two-starred Michelin restaurant Casa Marcial . Beyond being a gastronomic paradise, Asturias is also a haven for outdoorsy types: a third of the region is environmentally protected, making it prime for adventures such as hut-to-hut trekking in the Picos de Europa mountain range (which also straddle Cantabria and Castilla y León). Don’t miss the tiny village of Covadonga—the gateway to the Picos de Europa—which is famed for its dramatic, cliff-hugging Basilica of Nuestra Señora de las Batallas.

Stay Here: The best new addition to the region’s hospitality scene is CoolRooms Palacio de Luces , a restored palace located just outside the charming fishing village of Lastres. Don’t be fooled by its aristocratic interiors—rates start at around $180 per night—and be sure to make reservations at the hotel’s excellent Asturian restaurant, whose dishes spotlight local ingredients like sea urchin caviar and smoked Los Caserinos cheese.

La Rioja: Where Wine Meets Culture

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Countryside Rural Farm and Aerial View

Rioja needs no introduction. Located an hour’s drive south of Bilbao, Spain’s premier wine region is home to more than 500 wineries and is known worldwide for its bold, oaky reds. It’s also a must for architecture lovers, with high-design bodegas dreamed up by Frank Gehry, Santiago Calatrava, and Zaha Hadid. You’ll see the best of the region on a custom tour with the husband-and-wife team behind Rioja Wine Trips . But be sure to discover the gems of the wider La Rioja province, too, including the small medieval hilltop town of Briones, which is home to the excellent Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture (don’t skip the museum’s Garden of Bacchus, where you will find 220 varieties of grapes from around the world). It’s also worth motoring out to the small town of Ezcaray to tour the workshop of century-old, family-run textile brand Mantas Ezcaray, which regularly collaborates with high-fashion brands including Loewe and Hermès.

Stay Here: Iñigo Aragón and Pablo López Navarro are the founders of Madrid’s coveted Casa Josephine interior design and architecture studio. They’re also the proprietors of a five-bedroom guest house in the 200-person village of Sorzano. The Riojan townhouse is straight out of the pages of a design magazine, with an impeccable mix of furniture spanning styles and periods. Ask the owners for their black book of restaurants and bodegas.

Discover Ibiza’s Quiet Side

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Sea Water Coast Shoreline Boat Transportation Vehicle and Bay

Most serenity-seekers decamp to the lesser-developed Balearic isles of Formentera and Menorca. But Ibiza also has a quiet side, with pristine secluded beaches, a pastoral countryside, and small inland villages with a bohemian soul that harks back to the island’s hippie past. One of its best-known natural areas is the UNESCO-listed Ses Salines Natural Park, a vast ecological sanctuary with salt flats and roughly 200 species of birds. The island is also known for its dense meadows of water-cleaning Posidonia seagrass, which are among the best preserved in the Mediterranean. The once-sleepy town of Santa Gertrudis is now one of the island’s hotspots, with trendy boutiques like Es Cucons , lively restaurants including an outpost of New York-born Il Buco , and an all-seasons Parra & Romero gallery. Not far from that is the village of Sant Mateu d’Albarca, where you’ll find the farm-to-table restaurant Juntos , which serves vegetable-centric dishes with ingredients sourced from the 173-acre farm. (Don’t leave without perusing ceramics, botanical-dyed robes, and other goodies at the expertly edited on-site boutique). Even the island’s famous party scene has grown up; today, the hardest rope in town is arguably the gastronomic chiringuito Jondal , helmed by El Bulli alum Rafa Zafra.

Stay Here: Founded in 1999 by Barcelona native Margaret Von Korff and her Ibiza-born husband Luis Trigueros, Cas Gasi is one of the island’s original agroturismos . A 19 th -century finca is at the heart of the sprawling estate, which comprises four hectares of fruit orchards and vegetable gardens along with two pools, an open-air-yoga platform, and a revamped spa offering reiki and Ayurvedic massages.

Catalonia Beyond Barcelona

There are a lot of reasons to love Barcelona right now: hip gastro wine bars like Tiberi and Masa Vins , edgy new art spaces like VASTO and Araucària , revamped icons such as the century-old Grand Hotel Central , and big-ticket events such as the forthcoming Louis Vuitton-sponsored America’s Cup yacht race. But there’s so much more to discover outside Catalonia’s capital. In the seaside city of Tarragona, a short train ride away, you can tour a second-century Roman amphitheater and one of the largest and best-preserved circus complexes in the Roman Empire. Closer to Barcelona, the charming town of Sitges has a seafront promenade lined with grand mansions and atmospheric terrazas and is a great jumping-off point for hikes in Garraf Natural Park. Wine lovers should consider a day trip to the Penedès, about 30 miles west of Barcelona, which is the heart of Spain’s cava production. Meanwhile, those wanting to hit the beach should venture north to the famed Costa Brava to discover its picturesque coves and charming coastal towns like Cadaqués and Begur.

Stay Here: The medieval city of Girona is one of Catalonia’s lesser-known gems. The best place to stay? The newly opened Palau Fugit hotel, set inside an 18 th -century palace in the heart of the Barri Velli district. The ground-floor courtyard is always hosting public programming like concerts and art exhibitions, there’s a leafy outdoor courtyard with a heated pool, and one of the 25 suites is set inside an ancient stone watchtower.

Time Travel in Andalucía

Image may contain Architecture Building Castle Fortress and Outdoors

Andalucía is a mille-feuille of civilizations and cultures; however, its top attractions are the towering fortresses, monumental mosques, and awe-inspiring palaces constructed during the Moors’ 800-year rule. There are few sites as impressive or as well preserved as Granada’s formidable Alhambra fortress, which contains a series of 13 th to 15 th -century Moorish palaces and gardens, backed by the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Still, you don’t need to endure long ticket lines to step back in history. In Códoba, chef Paco Morale’s two-starred Michelin-starred Noor (“light” in Arabic) borrows inspiration from Andalucía’s layered, overlapping history: currently on offer are a trio of menus inspired by the “Golden Age” of the 16 th and 17 th centuries, with dishes incorporating prized ingredients such as saffron and orange blossom water. In Malaga, the popular El Pimpi restaurant—which streams across an 18 th -century townhouse across from the Roman theater—feels like a time capsule with its wine barrel decoration, bull head taxidermy, and old black-and-white photographs. And it goes without saying that Seville tiene un color especial (or so the song goes…)—just strolling its atmospheric streets is like traveling back in time, but be sure to set aside time to tour the Casa de Pilatos palace, which features some of the most impressive Mudejar-style tile work we’ve ever seen.

Stay Here: Located an hour outside Seville, Caballo de Hierro is a 54,000-acre estate centered on a sprawling country house that’s kitted with antique treasures and embroidered textiles. But the highlight is the turquoise-tile stable housing a team of thoroughbred Spanish and Arab horses, which can be ridden through the property's flower-covered hills.

Beauty and Bounty in the Basque Country

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Landscape Scenery Plant Vegetation Tree Countryside Land Woodland and Mountain

It’s impossible to talk about the Basque Country without mentioning the food. The region is known for its boisterous pintxo bars, cider houses, and more Michelin stars per square meter than almost anywhere else in the world. You could spend days eating your way through Bilbao and San Sebastián, but don’t leave out the many culinary institutions outside the city like the family-run Casa Cámara restaurant in the fishing village of Pasai Donibane, just north of San Sebastián, which uses a pulley to lift shellfish out of the water and into the middle of the dining room. In recent decades, the País Basco has also established a reputation as one of Spain’s most vibrant arts hubs, home to heavy-hitting institutions like the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and contemporary galleries including Galeria Espacio Marzana and Villa Magdalena . Be sure not to miss the Chillida Leku sculpture park dedicated to the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida.

Stay Here: San Sebastián is packed to the gills with smart city hotels. But for a bit more room to spread out, make the newly revamped Villa Soro —located just a 10-minute walk from Zurriola beach—as your home base. Reopened in 2022 by the Soldevila-Ferrer family, who also own Barcelona’s Hotel Majestic and Mallorca’s Sant Francesc Hotel Singular, the heritage property has refined interiors, original details like a wood-carved staircase, and artwork by famous Basque artists including Eduardo Chillida.

A Design Detour on Lanzarote

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Sea Water Car Transportation and Vehicle

No man is an island, but we have the visionary artist César Manrique to thank for the Canarian jewel that is Lanzarote. When others disparaged the island as being the ugliest in the entire archipelago—“nothing but camels and stones”—Manrique marveled at its elemental beauty and rustic simplicity. During the last two decades of his life, he devoted himself to creating gardens, lookouts, and cultural centers while protecting its coastline from the mass development you see on some of the other Canary Isles. His influence is everywhere, from the Timanfaya National Park (where he designed the tourist facilities) to the island’s Museum of Modern Art, the popular Jameos del Agua lava caves, and his former house turned museum. Once you’ve immersed yourself in the world of all things Manrique, discover Lanzarote’s other allures such as its otherworldly vineyards, planted in volcanic ash soil and encircled by low-lying rock walls—the designs are so artful, you might think Manrique had something to do with it.

Stay Here: Set inside the former home of César Manrique’s father, the 20-room César Lanzarote is a singular place to stay. It also has a prized location within La Geria Natural Park, surrounded by the estate’s original vineyards. Still, the most show-stopping feature might be designer Virginia Nieto’s island-inspired interiors—all white and green tones, stone and wood surfaces, and linen fabrics.

Seeing Green in Galicia

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Sea Water Shoreline Coast and Bay

You don’t need to hike the Camino de Santiago to discover the wonders of Galicia. The new Costa Verde Express luxury train whisks travelers across Spain’s verdant north, with stops in picturesque Galician towns like Viveiro and Ribadeo and the magnificent capital of Santiago de Compostela, where travelers will have the chance to tour the cathedral and dine at the city’s famed parador , one of the oldest hotels in Spain. Increasingly, travelers are using the waterfront city of Vigo as the jumping-off point for their Galician adventures, whether it’s exploring the villages along the Vigo estuary, hiking to the archaeological remains of Monte do Facho, or exploring the postcard-perfect beaches of Islas Cíes, a 45-minute ferry ride away. And if you find yourself in the fishing village of Corrubedo, be sure to check out David Chipperfield’s Bar do Porto , which serves Galician wines and fresh Atlantic seafood.

Stay Here: A revamped 18 th -century paper factory is the unlikely setting of Galicia’s most sumptuous hotel: the family-run A Quinta da Auga country manor, located a 10-minute drive from Santiago de Compostela. The property’s tranquil riverside setting is complemented by its refined yet homey interiors, sublime spa, and verdant gardens.

U.N. Chief Calls Conditions in Gaza a ‘Moral Outrage’

In a visit to the Rafah border crossing, Secretary General António Guterres called for an immediate cease-fire and expressed solidarity with Palestinians in the territory.

Reporting from Jerusalem

António Guterres, the U.N. secretary general, reiterated his call on Saturday for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza, using a visit to a border crossing in Egypt to slam the “nonstop nightmare” Palestinians faced in the territory.

“I want Palestinians in Gaza to know: You are not alone,” Mr. Guterres said. “People around the world are outraged about the horrors we are all witnessing in real time. I carry the voices of the vast majority of the world: We have seen enough. We have heard enough.”

Mr. Guterres spoke to reporters from the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, one of the two main ground corridors being used to transport desperately needed humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. More than five months into Israel’s war against Hamas, Palestinians in Gaza are facing widespread hunger and deprivation despite a huge international relief effort.

For months, aid organizations have struggled to transport and distribute sufficient food and other supplies in Gaza, which faces a blockade that is jointly enforced by Egypt and Israel.

U.N. officials have said the obstacles include lengthy Israeli security inspections, attacks on aid convoys by desperate Palestinians and organized gangs, and roads badly damaged by months of airstrikes and fighting. Israel has blamed the delays on U.N. staffing and logistics and says it does not impose limits on the amount of aid that can enter Gaza.

The worsening conditions this week led the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a global authority that has classified food security crises for decades, to project that famine was “imminent” for the 300,000 Palestinian civilians in northern Gaza. Aid groups and U.N. officials have argued that it would be better for Israel to ease entry restrictions for trucks at established crossing points into the enclave and to do more to speed the delivery of goods inside Gaza.

“From this crossing, we see the heartbreak and heartlessness of it all: a long line of blocked red relief trucks on one side of the gates, the long shadow of starvation on the other,” Mr. Guterres said. “That is more than tragic — it is a moral outrage.”

Israel’s minister of foreign affairs, Israel Katz, responded to Mr. Guterres in a post on X , the site formerly known as Twitter. Mr. Katz criticized the secretary general for suggesting Israel was to blame for the humanitarian situation in Gaza without also condemning Hamas and the United Nations for their roles, and for doing so “without calling for the immediate, unconditional release of all Israeli hostages.”

The visit to the border by Mr. Guterres came a day after a draft U.N. Security Council resolution, backed by the United States and calling for an “immediate and sustained cease-fire in Gaza,” failed to pass when Russia, China and Algeria voted against it at a meeting of the council in New York.

The resolution, which included some of Washington’s strongest language since the start of the war, was criticized by those who opposed it and others for not demanding a permanent end to the war. Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, denounced the U.S.-backed measure before the vote, calling it a “hypocritical initiative” that did not do enough “to save the lives of Palestinians.”

In recent weeks, Israel and Hamas have held indirect talks — mediated by Qatar and Egypt — to try to reach a cease-fire deal. The proposal would also include the release of at least some of the more than 100 remaining hostages held by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups in Gaza, according to Israeli officials.

Israel started its campaign in Gaza after a surprise attack led by Hamas on Oct. 7 that killed over 1,200 people in Israel, mostly civilians, with more than 250 people taken hostage, according to Israeli officials. Five months later, more than 32,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the Gaza health ministry, and wide areas of the enclave have been leveled.

Israeli leaders have vowed to send ground troops into Rafah, the city in southern Gaza where about a million Palestinians have sought refuge from the fighting. President Biden expressed “deep concerns” over a major Israeli operation in Rafah during a phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel this week, according to the White House. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said on Friday that an assault on Rafah risked “further isolating Israel around the world.”

Israel says the operation is necessary to root out remaining Hamas fighters in the city. Mr. Netanyahu vowed on Friday that Israel would invade Rafah regardless of whether the United States backed the decision. “I hope we will do it with the support of the U.S.,” Mr. Netanyahu told Mr. Blinken, according to the Israeli prime minister’s office. “But if we must, we will do it alone.”

Mr. Netanyahu said Israel would seek to evacuate civilians from combat areas. But U.N. officials like Mr. Guterres have warned that the potential offensive was still likely to have dire consequences.

“Any further onslaught will make things even worse,” Mr. Guterres said. “Worse for Palestinian civilians, worse for the hostages and worse for all people of the region.”

An earlier version of this article misstated Algeria’s vote at the U.N. Security Council on Friday. Algeria voted against the resolution, but could not veto it as a nonpermanent member of the council.

Our Coverage of the Israel-Hamas War

News and Analysis

The latest exchange of fire  between Israel and Hezbollah across the Lebanon border has raised fears that the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas — a Hezbollah ally — could spiral into a wider conflict .

Israel has deployed an expansive facial recognition program in Gaza . The experimental effort, which has not been disclosed, is being used to conduct mass surveillance in the territory.

The authorities in Gaza said that 12 people had drowned  while trying to retrieve airdropped aid that had fallen into the Mediterranean.

A Hostage’s Account: Amit Soussana, an Israeli lawyer, is the first former hostage to speak publicly about being sexually assaulted  during captivity in Gaza.

A Power Vacuum: Since the start of the war, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has done little to address the power vacuum that would appear after Israeli forces leave Gaza. The risks of inaction are already apparent in Gaza City .

Chuck Schumer’s Speech:  Speaking to the U.S. Senate, the majority leader and highest-ranking Jewish official in the United States branded Netanyahu a major impediment to peace. In an interview, he explained why he felt obligated  to call for new leadership in Israel.

A Tough Balancing Act: Israel has been noticeably out of step with Western nations when it comes to relations with Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. That approach reflects unique security needs that have gained new relevance  since the start of the war in Gaza.
