SHOW MONEY for VISA APPLICATION & IMMIGRATION: Everything We Know So Far

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

“How much show money should I have in the bank to guarantee my visa application approval?”

If I earned a dollar for every time I got that question, I would be pretty wealthy by now. Easily, this is the most frequently asked question on our social channels. We also make sure that we answer this in the FAQs section of our visa posts. Yet, we still get a lot of messages about it. It’s not difficult to understand why. Out of all the documents that embassies usually require from applicants, this is probably the most vague and the most complicated.

First of all, nothing and no one can guarantee approval of your visa application . You can have a huge sum on your account and still get denied a visa. Whether your application will be approved or rejected depends on a smorgasbord of factors. Yes, financial capacity is one of them, but it is JUST ONE of them. The other requirements have to be equally, if not more, satisfactory.

But how much is enough? In this article, I’ll try to answer in detail this burning question and all the other inquiries that we usually get about show money. I’m compiling everything that Vins and I know about the subject, so that we could have just one page to link to whenever we’re asked about it.

Note, however, that I don’t work for any consulate or embassy. All these are speculations based on the patterns and similarities we see in our applications, talks with travel agents, and experiences of our family, friends and members of our Support Group. Much of the evaluation process isn’t visible to outsiders. At the end of the day, it’s an exercise in making educated guesses.

So without further ado, let’s begin!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

What is show money?

Most embassies require visa applicants to submit proof of funds. On the surface, it seems like they do so to make sure that applicants can sufficiently support themselves financially during the trip (financial capacity). But it is actually much deeper than that.

More than financial capacity, they’re also concerned about rootedness . Let’s discuss rootedness first because we will be circling back to it numerous times in this article.

What is rootedness?

Remember, many applicants try to secure a tourist visa just for show, but once they’re in their destination, they will stay longer and work there. We, Filipinos, are notorious for it. We even developed a slang term for it: TNT, “tago nang tago,” referring to the act of constantly hiding from police or immigration authorities. In other words, you need to show that your life here in the Philippines is good and stable, and that you have no reason to overstay abroad.

They have all the right to reject anyone whom they suspect may not contribute to their economy or violate their laws. Having good financial standing is one of the ways you can minimize those doubts and prove to them that you have a good life here and that you have no reason to overstay or work in their country.

But there are cases wherein Immigration Officers ask for it too, depending on the country. I’ll talk more about that below.

How do I prove that I have enough money to travel?

australia tourist show money

  • A bank certificate is usually a one-page document that certifies that you have an account with that branch. Often, the latest available balance is indicated. But in some banks, you can request that some details be included.
  • A bank statement , sometimes called a statement of account, is a detailed record of the balance and the transactions on that account within a specified period of time. It includes the amounts deposited into, the amounts withdrawn from, and even the interests gained by that account, and the corresponding dates.

Which is better to submit?

The period that must be covered also varies. For Korean visa, you need to present the transactions within the past three months. For Canadian visa, four months is sufficient. For Chinese, Schengen and most other visas, six months is the standard.

How to get a bank certificate or bank statement?

The rules vary from bank to bank. For example, in my experience, BDO requires that you secure these documents from the branch where you opened your account. You can’t get one from any other branch. I have tried many times but they always require me to personally appear at my branch. One of my accounts is in the province so I always have to travel there just to tick them off the requirements list.

On the other hand, BPI allows their customers to get these documents from any of their branch. It’s ideal for me because I have just moved to a different address. My original BPI branch is already pretty far from where I live currently but I don’t need to go there to request for it.

Service fees usually apply. Try to get a copy of the official receipt too because some embassies require that it be attached to the document.

What do embassies check on my account?

Embassies requiring a bank statement check not just the latest balance. They scrutinize the following:

  • Balance. How much funds you have on your account.
  • Opening date. The date the account was opened. New accounts almost always raise suspicions.
  • Transactions. The amounts deposited into and the amounts withdrawn from that account. They also check how regular the activities are.
  • Irregularities. They check for anomalies in the transactions. For example, if there is a one-time big-time deposit, which is usually suspicious and indicative of gaming the system.
  • Consistency with your other documents. They compare the record of transactions with your Certificate of Employment or ITR (Income Tax Returns). If they see that things don’t add up, it can be a reason for rejection. For example, if your salary is only P15,000 per month but your bank account shows few deposits of P100,000 each, that can raise some red flags and be the cause of denial.

How much show money should I have in the bank to be granted a visa?

There is no one-ring-to-rule-them-all answer to this because it varies depending on many factors like: the country you are traveling to, the length of your trip, and the itinerary that you will submit.

My personal rule is P10,000 per day + airfare + cost of hotel. But that’s just me. I’ll explain below.

Most embassies don’t really disclose how much money you should have on your bank account. One probable exception is the Chinese Embassy which, according to some travel agencies, requires that your bank account have at least P100,000. (I say “probable” because I know people who have lower balance but were still granted a visa.)

That said, some embassies disclose how much “pocket money” you should have per day when visiting their country. For example:

  • For France, their visa application website indicates EUR 120 per day, if accommodations have not been settled.
  • For other Schengen countries like Germany, Greece, and Italy, it varies but usually between EUR 40 and EUR 60. Just assume it’s EUR 60, to be on the safe side.
  • For Turkey, it’s USD 50 per day.

I guess the key thing to remember here is that how much you have should be proportional to how long your stay is. For example, if you have only P100,000, don’t apply for a 59-day stay because that would obviously raise a lot of questions regarding whether or not you can afford the trip.

Add the total to the cost of flights and the cost of accommodations, and you should have the minimum amount on your bank account. MINIMUM because, of course, they have to be convinced that you will NOT be burning ALL your life savings during the trip and that you should still be able to live comfortably after. Again, it’s also about rootedness.

It’s complicated, I know. That’s why I just follow my personal rule: P10,000 per day + airfare + cost of hotel.

It works for me every time because it has plenty of allowance.

I don’t have enough funds. Can I borrow money and transfer it to my account?

Some people do it, but this is something I DO NOT RECOMMEND OR ENCOURAGE .

australia tourist show money

Like I said earlier, embassies examine the details of your financial documents. According to a friend who used to be a visa officer, they are trained to spot inconsistencies and anomalies, and it’s pretty easy to do. If they see that some things don’t match or there are unusual transactions, eyebrows will raise.

Can I ask someone to sponsor my trip when applying for a visa?

Yes, you can. However, it does not always mean it will increase your chances of approval.

For Japan, this can work. When applying for a Japan visa with a sponsor, the applicant may choose to not submit a bank certificate and provide proof of funds from the sponsor instead. The burden shifts to the sponsor.

However, for most other countries, having a sponsor does not exempt you from show money and could even hurt your application. For most visas like Korean, Canadian, and Schengen, even if you have a sponsor, you will still need to submit your own bank documents. You may have the means to support your trip financially through someone else, but they still need to see show money to confirm your stability and rootedness.

Will I still have to submit my own bank documents if I have a sponsor?

See previous section.

My bank account is newly opened. Can I use that?

It’s going to be a very risky move. A newly opened bank account can raise some red flags because it looks like you only opened one to apply for a visa, which is a no-no.

If you plan on visiting visa countries in the future, even if you’re not applying for a visa anytime soon, it’s best to open a bank account as soon as you can. We discussed this in a separate post: LONG TERM PREPARATIONS FOR VISA APPLICATION!

Can I use a payroll account in visa application?

Before anything else, let’s define what a payroll account is.

A payroll account can be either:

  • EMPLOYER’s payroll account , which refers to the account into which the employer deposits funds and from which the salary or wages of the employees on the payroll will be drawn.
  • EMPLOYEE’S payroll account , which is the account where the employee receives their salary or wages regularly.

If you’re an employee and you’re referring to the latter, it still depends on what type of payroll account you have. But YES, I have tried using it for visa application a few times back when I was a corporate slave and never had any issues with it. I think it’s important that your payroll account meets the following:

  • It is under your name , not your employer’s.
  • It has the characteristics of a personal savings account , as opposed to a cash card or prepaid account.
  • The bank can issue a bank certificate and bank statement for your account.
  • It has sufficient balance to cover your trip.
  • It’s NOT a newly opened account.

If not your payroll account doesn’t have enough funds, you can submit it along with your other accounts to make a stronger case. I like submitting my payroll account because it shows where my money is coming from and is consistent with my COE and ITR.

If you’re an employer and you’re referring to the former, I have no idea if you can use this account. I have not done it (as an employer).

Can I use a joint account in visa application?

YES. I do this most of the time.

In the past few years, I have been using two joint accounts when I’m applying for a visa: one with my business partner (AND account) and the other with my mom (OR account).

I have used the OR account on its own before and had no issues. But I have never used my AND account on its own. I use it together with other accounts, so I am not sure if an AND account is acceptable as a stand alone proof of funds.

Can I submit multiple bank accounts when applying for a visa?

Yes, you can. I do it most of the the time. This paints a clear picture of my finances, so the embassy could easily understand. I have at least three bank accounts now:

  • Payroll account, where I get my salary.
  • Savings account, where I transfer my savings, not to be touched unless emergency. This is also my joint account with my mom. (I give my mom access to my savings, for emergency purposes.)
  • Travel account, which is another savings account that I set up specifically for saving up for my trips.

I submit all three accounts when I’m applying for a visa. Usually, at least. Sometimes, when I get lazy, I just submit one or two.

Do Immigration officers in the Philippines look for show money upon exit?

Sometimes. It’s hard to tell whether or not they will ask you for show money. But yes, they do in certain cases.

australia tourist show money

According to the Bureau of Immigration , financial capability is NOT a requirement for traveling abroad. However, if they suspect that the traveler is not telling the truth about their purpose of travel, they may need you to undergo secondary inspection.

According to a memorandum entitled Guidelines on Departure Formalities for International-Bound Passengers , released by the Bureau of Immigration to their airport and seaport officers in 2012, in the secondary inspection, the traveler will be evaluated based on age, educational attainment, and… *drum roll* financial capability to travel.

To be clear, NOT ALL travelers will undergo a secondary inspection, only those who are suspected of having a different purpose of travel. According to the bureau (as told to a news agency), tourists who are more likely to be questioned are:

  • First-time tourists flying to a not-so-popular destination.
  • Tourists with no steady source of income in the Philippines and no benefactors.

If you’re unemployed and it’s your first time to travel abroad, there’s a big chance you will need to undergo secondary inspection and be asked to present proof of financial capability.

I have no money in the bank. What can I do to avoid getting offloaded?

Get a sponsor who can shoulder your travel expenses. This applies to students, fresh graduates, or unemployed individuals who have no capability to support the trip financially.

Ideally, the sponsor is a Filipino immediate relative . You should have the following notarized documents ready:

  • Affidavit of support indicating the relationship within the 4th civil degree of consanguinity or affinity, together with the supporting documents.
  • Affidavit of undertaking/ guaranty

You can merge these two items into just one document — an Affidavit of Support and Guarantee — to reduce notarization fees.

Sometimes the Immigration Officer won’t ask for it, but it’s better to come prepared.

However, note that having the above papers does not guarantee getting through. It will increase your chances, but it’s still up to your demeanor and answers, and the judgment of the Immigration Official.

If I am sponsored by someone else, will the Immigration Officer ask for show money upon exit?

Maybe. According to a friend who is an Immigration Officer, in addition to the Affidavit of Support and Guarantee, the traveler must also provide proof that the sponsor can support the trip. This may be the sponsor’s bank documents (show money), Certificate of Employment, or ITR.

If your sponsor is a foreigner or a Filipino based abroad, there may be additional complications. Please check the links below for more details.

  • For travelers sponsored by a Filipino accompanying you on the trip
  • For travelers sponsored by a Filipino abroad
  • For travelers sponsored by a foreigner

Again, whether or not they will ask for proof of funds depends solely on the judgment of the Immigration Officer.

Do Immigration Officers abroad look for show money upon arrival in their country?

It depends on the country you’re visiting. For example, as a matter of policy, Thailand requires foreign visitors to have at least 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 per family (or the equivalent amount in another currency) in cash upon entry.

Another example is Taiwan, which requires visa-free Filipino travelers to have proof of sufficient travel funds in the form of cash, credit cards, travelers checks, or similar forms. They don’t really say how much exactly.

However, it is not always implemented. Our team has been in and out of Thailand and Taiwan but none of us were asked how much cash we carry or how much budget we allocate for the trip.

That said, for countries that have a show money rule, it is always best to comply, just in case they ask. It’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I personally have been asked about funds in other countries. In the Maldives and in another country — I can’t remember if it was Australia or Singapore — I was asked how much money I had with me. I answered truthfully and shared that I also had a credit card and an ATM card. In both occasions, they let me through without any more questions.

Hi, Yosh! Lumabas both your name and your mom’s name sa Joint Account sa Bank Certificate and Bank Statement?

Yosh Dimen

Hi Iza, yes po. Andun pareho yung names namin.

I think sa BDO, kapag OR account, may option ka na name mo lang yung mag-appear pero need ng permission nung ka-joint account. Nagawa ko na sya once before, pero di ko alam if pwede pa rin sya hanggang ngayon.

Mary Grace Dilag

Hi Yosh, just want to ask lang po if Insurance policy, retirement fund and investments pwede i-add sa requirements? Thank you!

Yung investments po, pwede. Yung retirement fund, di ko po sure kasi di ko pa naranasan/naitanong. Baka pwede naman if along with other bank accounts.

Yung insurance policy po na tinutukoy nyo ay ung life insurance? Nagsubmit din ako dati once (separate sa travel insurance na required ng schengen) kasi ung sa akin ay ung may kasamang investment, pero di ko na matandaan kung anong country haha.

Do you have any idea how far back they’ll trace the income if you can’t provide an ITR? I’m a freelancer and have irregular payouts.

Hi! How will the joint bank account work for married couples na applying? The other is a freelancer while the other has stable job. In the application form, there’s a question for the funding. Should we both put “half me half sponsor”? Or the one with stable job can state to sponsor all expenses for the other one? And the freelancer can choose “fully sponsored” in the funding part? I’m really confused po

Thank you so much for this info! Husband and I are applying for a Canadian tourist VISA this month, and it’s to be sponsored by his parents who live there, but we plan to still submit documents for proof of rootedness like you suggested. For my case though I recently opened (like last week) a Checking account and used funds from my Savings account (3 years old) to open it with 100k. I plan to get a banking statement reflecting both accounts… Would that possible be questioned since my Checking account is new? Or should I just show only my Savings account?

How Much Show Money Is Needed for an Australian Tourist Visa?

Traveling to Australia as a tourist is a dream for many, but to turn this dream into reality, understanding the requirements for an Australian Tourist Visa is essential. Among these requirements, the concept of 'show money' plays a crucial role. Show money is the term used to describe the financial proof applicants must provide to demonstrate their financial capacity to cover their expenses during their stay in Australia. This article delves into the details of the show money requirement for an Australian Tourist Visa, guided by the regulations set by the Department of Home Affairs in Australia.

The Australian Tourist Visa

Before discussing the specifics of show money, it's important to understand what an Australian Tourist Visa requires. The Australian Tourist Visa is a gateway for travelers wishing to explore Australia's diverse attractions.

This visa allows individuals to visit Australia for holidays, recreation, or to visit family and friends. Applicants must not work or sell goods or services to the public. To apply for this visa, one must meet certain criteria set by the Department of Home Affairs, including health, character, and financial requirements.

This visa, regulated by the Department of Home Affairs, mandates applicants to demonstrate sufficient financial capacity, ensuring they can cover their daily living expenses without undue hardship. The crucial show money requirement varies, reflecting the individual's planned duration and activities in Australia. Applicants must provide evidence, like bank statements, to prove their ability to sustain themselves financially during their stay. Meeting these requirements is key to experiencing the rich culture and natural beauty Australia offers, making it a coveted destination for many.

Show Money Requirement: What It Is and Why It Matters

The show money requirement is a crucial part of the visa application process. It serves as evidence of your financial capacity to support yourself during your stay.

This term refers to the proof of sufficient funds that applicants must present to the Department of Home Affairs, ensuring they can afford their stay in Australia without undue hardship. The Department of Home Affairs assesses this aspect to ensure that visitors can afford their daily living expenses without resorting to unauthorized work or public funds. It's a measure to demonstrate that visitors can manage their daily living expenses independently, maintaining the integrity of the tourist visa program.

The importance of this requirement cannot be overstated. It prevents tourists from becoming financially stranded or resorting to unauthorized work. The Department of Home Affairs assesses show money to ensure visitors have a smooth, enjoyable stay without financial stress. The amount varies based on the length of stay and estimated daily living expenses, encompassing costs like accommodation, food, travel, and leisure activities. Show money is more than just showing a bank balance; it's about presenting a realistic, well-planned financial snapshot for the duration of your Australian adventure.

How Much Show Money Is Required?

Understanding the show money requirement for an Australia Tourist Visa is crucial for anyone planning to visit Australia. This requirement is a part of the visa application process set by the Department of Home Affairs, aimed at ensuring that visitors possess adequate financial capacity to support themselves during their stay.

The exact amount of show money needed varies based on several factors, including the length of your stay, the nature of your visit, and your accommodation plans. While the Department of Home Affairs does not specify a fixed amount, applicants should be prepared to show sufficient funds to cover their travel, accommodation, and day-to-day expenses,  plus a margin to account for any unforeseen expenses. This includes costs for food, transportation, and any personal expenses. Financial capacity can be demonstrated through bank statements, support letters, or proof of prepaid expenses. Each application is assessed individually, considering the applicant's circumstances. Therefore, it's important to provide comprehensive and accurate financial documentation to meet the Australian Tourist Visa requirements successfully.

Estimating Daily Living Expenses

When planning a trip to Australia with an Australian Tourist Visa, accurately estimating daily living expenses is crucial. This estimation is a key component of the show money requirement set by the Department of Home Affairs, as it demonstrates your financial capacity to sustain yourself during your stay.

To estimate these costs, consider expenses such as accommodation, food, transportation, entertainment, and any personal expenses. Prices vary significantly across different Australian cities and regions. For instance, living expenses in major cities like Sydney or Melbourne may be higher compared to smaller towns or rural areas. Researching the average costs in the specific areas you plan to visit will provide a more accurate estimate.. Additionally, it's advisable to add a buffer to your estimated daily expenses to cover unexpected costs, ensuring a stress-free stay in Australia. This comprehensive approach to budgeting aligns with the Australian Tourist Visa requirements and facilitates a smooth application process.

Financial Capacity: More Than Just Cash

It's important to note that financial capacity isn't limited to liquid cash. The Department of Home Affairs considers various forms of financial proof. This can include bank statements, a letter of support from someone who will financially support your trip, or evidence of prepaid accommodation and tours. The key is to demonstrate that you have sufficient resources to cover all expenses during your stay.

Tips for Demonstrating Financial Capacity

1. detailed bank statements: .

Submit recent bank statements that show a consistent balance over time. Large, unexplained deposits can raise questions about the genuineness of your funds.

2. Employment Stability:

Evidence of stable employment in your home country can support your application by showing you have a steady income source.

3. Property or Business Ownership:

Documents proving property or business ownership can strengthen your application by showing additional financial ties to your home country.

4. Sponsorship or Support Letters:

If someone is sponsoring your trip, provide a letter from them, along with their financial documents, to substantiate their support.

Role of the Department of Home Affairs

The Department of Home Affairs plays a crucial role in the Australian Tourist Visa process, particularly in assessing the show money requirement. They assess each application individually, considering the personal circumstances of the applicant.

The Department scrutinizes financial evidence, like bank statements and sponsorship letters, to ensure visitors can sustain themselves without undue strain on public resources. Their assessment is in detail, taking into account various factors to ensure each applicant possesses sufficient funds for their stay, thereby upholding the integrity of the visa process and safeguarding the interests of both the visitors and Australia. It's crucial to provide accurate and comprehensive information to avoid delays or rejections.

Planning Your Application

When planning to apply for an Australian Tourist Visa, start by assessing your financial situation against the requirements. Ensure you have sufficient funds to cover your proposed trip's duration and scope. Prepare your documents well in advance and consider consulting with a visa expert if you have any doubts or complex financial situations.

Meeting the show money requirement for an Australian Tourist Visa is a critical step in ensuring a successful application. Demonstrating your financial capacity to cover daily living expenses without recourse to public funds is essential. Remember, the Department of Home Affairs assesses each application on its merit, and thorough preparation can make a significant difference in the outcome of your visa application.

Traveling to Australia can be an enriching experience, and with the right preparation, securing an Australian Tourist Visa can be a smooth and straightforward process. By understanding and meeting the show money requirements, you are one step closer to exploring the wonders of Australia.

Sufficient Funds for Australian Tourist Visa

Sufficient Funds for Australian Tourist Visa

How much funds do I need to show for an Australian tourist visa?

You must have access to sufficient funds to cover your expenses while in Australia. You will not have work rights while one a tourist visa, so you may need to demonstrate proof of funds for Australia.

One of the requirements for obtaining an Australian tourist visa is to demonstrate that the applicant has funds the required for Australia tourist visa to support their stay. This is known as the “sufficient funds requirement.” The sufficient funds requirement is in place to ensure that an applicant will not rely on public funds during their stay in Australia and will be able to cover the costs of their accommodation, transportation, and other living expenses.

In general, the sufficient funds requirement for an Australian tourist visa is calculated based on the length of your stay in Australia and the number of people in your group. The Australian Department of Home Affairs provides guidelines for the sufficient funds requirement for various types of tourist visas and lengths of stay.

It is important to note that the sufficient funds requirement is only one of the requirements for obtaining an Australian tourist visa. An applicant may also need to meet other requirements, such as providing a valid passport, a letter of invitation from their partner or family member if they are visiting Australia to see them, and evidence of their relationship with their partner or family member.

What funds will the applicant have available to support their stay in Australia?

You need to explain where you will be accessing funds from to support your stay. Do you have personal savings, will you still have income from your home country, will a family member support you? To do this, you could provide bank statements for your Australian tourist visa, payslips, or an undertaking from a family member to support you.

You can also provide evidence of a credit card with sufficient credit to cover their expenses in Australia.

Minimum bank balance for Australian tourist visa

There is no ‘minimum’ bank balance that you need to show for an Australian tourist visa. What you need to demonstrate is that you have enough funds to support yourself during your trip. A one week trip staying with your brother is going to cost a lot less that a 6 month trip travelling around all of Australia.

For working holiday visas, AUD5000 is currently considered ‘sufficient funds’, but remember, the working holiday visas have work rights as the tourist visas do not.

Estimate how much the trip will genuinely cost you – be realistic. For example, the sufficient funds requirement for an individual who is applying for a short-stay tourist visa and is planning to stay in Australia for up to three months may be around AUD 1,000 to AUD 1,500. This amount is based on the assumption that the applicant will be staying in a hotel or hostel and will be paying for their own meals and transportation.

“Show Money” for Australian Tourist Visa: How Much Do You Need in Your Bank Account?

There is no information as to how much money you should have in your bank account when applying for an Australian tourist visa unlike when applying for a Schengen visa where the amount is specified .

As a rule of thumb, you should have enough money for the 3 main travel expenses (transportation, food, and accommodation) throughout the duration of your stay.

For purposes of visa application, I will keep  an amount equivalent to 100-120 Euro per day . However, on the actual trip, I spend way less than that as I always travel cheaply.

Australia Visitor Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process

Updated: February 7, 2024

Australia Visitor Visa is the only option to visit Australia as a tourist for many nationalities. If you don’t qualify for either the Electronic Travel Authority(ETA) or the eVisitor Visa, then you will need to get a Visitor Visa.

Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.

The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
  • Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries

Visitor visa validity

The Australian Visitor visa is valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years from the date of issue. The validity of the visa depends on your nationality and circumstances. You must visit Australia within the validity of your visa.

Duration of stay

Most Visitor visas granted allow for 3 months of continuous stay in Australia. Depending on circumstances, you might be granted a stay of 6 months or even 12 months.

Allowed number of entries

Most Visitor visas are multiple-entry , but Home Affairs also issues single visas in certain circumstances for certain nationalities.

When to apply

Since the tourist visas are valid for at least 3 months, it’s a good idea to apply well in advance. Most applications get processed in 3 weeks or fewer.

  • their relationship to you
  • the purpose of your visit and length of stay
  • if you will be staying with them
  • Proof of their funds (if they will be paying for your stay)
  • Your plans or travel itinerary while in Australia
  • a letter from your employer stating you plan to return to your job
  • proof that you study at a school, college or university in your home country
  • proof that you have immediate family members in your home country

At a later date, you may be required to obtain and submit the following:

  • Medical Certificate
  • Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)

All non-English documents (except for police certificates) must be translated into English and all documents’ copies (both original and translations) must be certified.

Photo requirements

You need one passport-size digital photo for the Visitor Visa application. The photo must meet the following requirements.

  • Taken in the last 6 months
  • Showing your head and shoulders against a plain background
  • Neutral facial expression with mouth closed, eyes open, and looking at the camera
  • Religious head coverings are allowed but must not obscure the face
  • Piercing is allowed but must not cause any reflections or shadows

There is no official guidance for the size and resolution of pictures uploaded online but the file type must be JPG. You will get to move the photo to position your face within a frame.

As long as the picture is clear, crisp, and not excessively big, it will be accepted.

Visitor visa fee

The Australian Tourist Visa application fee is 190 AUD , payable online.

You may also have to pay for:

  • Health checks
  • Police certificates

Processing time

Australian immigration reports that 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% are processed in 21 days . These periods start after you submit your biometrics (if required).

Visitor Visa Application Process

Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Application on ImmiAccount Portal

How to apply

You must apply for your tourist visa online through the Immi Portal. Applying on paper is not possible for the visitor visa anymore. Follow the below steps:

  • Go to the ImmiAccount portal and create an account
  • Click on “New application” and pick “Visitor Visa (600)”.
  • Enter your personal information, passport details, employment details and financial information
  • Upload your documents such as passport, photo, etc.
  • Pay the required visa fee
  • Submit the application

The Visitor Visa is part of Australia’s biometrics program. If you apply for a Visitor Visa from any of the below countries, regardless of your nationality, you must give your biometrics.

  • Afghanistan
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Kazakhstan
  • New Zealand
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Philippines
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Solomon Islands
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • United Arab Emirates

If you apply from one of these countries, you will receive an email informing you that you need to visit an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) to have your biometrics collected. The biometrics are usually a face photo and fingerprint scan.

You must complete the biometrics procedure within 14 days of getting this email otherwise your application becomes void without a refund!

AABCs are typically managed by VFS Global. They charge a service fee for biometric collection. This fee depends on AABC and the country you are applying from.

For example, the biometric service at AABC in Dubai, UAE is AED 109.17. The biometric service fee at AABC in Manila, Philippines is PHP 557.

How to schedule biometric appointment?

Within 24 hours of applying for your Visitor Visa, you will receive an email with a biometric request letter from Home Affairs. Follow these steps to schedule your biometric appointment.

Find the nearest ABCC to you and follow the prompts to schedule your biometric appointment.

How to attend biometric appointment?

Follow the below steps to attend your biometric appointment at an AABC.

  • Arrive at the AABC at least 15 minutes before your appointment time
  • Original passport
  • Biometric appointment confirmation
  • Biometric fee receipt and
  • Biometric request letter received in the email from Home Affairs
  • Your facial photo is taken and your 10 fingertips are scanned

What if you can’t attend your appointment?

If you can’t make an appointment, you can reschedule your appointment up to 24 hours before your scheduled appointment date and time. You can reschedule up to 2 times.

What if you miss your appointment?

If you miss your scheduled appointment, you will lose the fee paid as the biometric fee is nonrefundable. You will also have to wait 24 hours to schedule a new appointment.

How to track status

You will receive the status of your application in your email. You can also track the status of the visa in your ImmiAccount.

How to download approved visa

When your Visitor Visa is approved, you will receive a grant letter in your email from Home Affairs. The grant letter is your Visitor Visa.

The Visitor visa is electronically linked to your passport, so you don’t need to download or print your Visitor Visa.

If you’re ever asked to show any proof, you can use the Grant Notification you received in your email. You can also download it from your ImmiAccount under “Visa Grant Details”.

How to check the validity of your Visitor Visa

The expiration date of your Australia eVisitor visa is indicated as “Must not arrive after” on the visa letter. If you lost your grant letter or don’t have a copy of your Visitor Visa, you can check the validity details on the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) portal by using either your Visa Grant Number or Transaction Reference Number.

What are the Financial Requirements for Visitor Visa Australia 2023?

Updated September 2, 2023

What are the Financial Requirements for Visitor Visa Australia?

When applying for any visa to Australia, there will be a long detailed list of requirements with financial documents being very important when applying for, in particular, a Visitor Visa. As they are short-term visas that do not allow the option to work it is essential the government has proof that you will be able to financially support yourself during your travels.

If one of the conditions cannot be fulfilled, then there is a possibility that the application for the visa will be refused.

The requirements also vary depending on what visa will be submitted.

For example, the requirements for a partner visa or a visitor visa will certainly be different, considering the function and purpose.

Partner visas will certainly have more complex requirements than the requirements for a visitor visa.

Generally, when applying for a visitor visa to Australia, there are requirements such as identity documents relating to a national ID, birth certificate, and any other identity documents.

There are also travel documents that include passports, visas that have been obtained, boarding passes, stamped passports, and other documents relating to overseas travel. In addition, there are several forms that must be filled out, and the other important thing is the financial requirements.

Why are Financial Requirements for a Visitor Visa Important?

Financial requirements for a Visitor Visa are important requirements that also become a benchmark in determining whether you are eligible or not in applying for a visa visitor.

In submitting visitor visas to any country, these financial requirements must be included, although in each visa application to several countries different conditions are required.

These financial requirements for Visitor Visa Australia generally include bank statements for the past 3 months with a closing balance of at least $ 5,000 AUD per applicant, payslips, audited accounts, taxation records, or credit card limits.

If you have a sponsor in submitting a Visitor Visa, your sponsor is also required to provide financial requirements such as Australian income or overseas tax assessment, bank statement for the last 3 months with a closing balance of at least $ 5,000 AUD for one applicant, as well as proof of ownership of assets in Australia (home, car, business, etc.)

We understand that financial requirements for Visitor Visa are one of the conditions that can confuse you.

If you are confused about understanding these financial requirements for Visitor Visa but still want to come to Australia, we recommend using a professional and trusted migration agent to avoid rejection of the Visitor Visa application.

Australian Visitor Visa – Visa Costs and Required Funds

AustralianMoney

It is a million dollar question – How much money do you need to have to show to the Australian Immigration in order to have your visa granted?

Required funds for Australian visitor visa

If you call the Department of Home Affairs and want to enquire about required funds for visitor visa this is usually a script:

A: Hi, I would like to apply for visitor visa. How much money do I need to have? D: You need to have at least AUD$1,000-1,500 if you apply to stay for one month. A: But my air ticket will cost me at least AUD$2,000, are you sure? D: Do not worry about the ticket. Have at least AUD$1,000-1,500 and that would be good for one month. If you have a relative, somebody to provide you with free accommodation, in that case you will need even less than that.

Please note that on the Department of Home Affairs website and in all their correspondence it is stated that „You should not rely on the Department’s advice but rather consult a Registered Migration Agent“.

We advise clients not to rely on the content of the Department’s website, because the published information is only general and may not be valid for your case.

Requirements for Australian visitor visa

I previosly wrote about the requirements for visitor visa –  click here  to find out more. Please note that you can meet all the general requirements and still do not get the visitor visa. It is all up to the government do judge your circumstances and whether you actually have some other motives besides simply visiting Australia.

By using a migration agent you can increase your chances of getting a visitor visa and avoid making the common mistakes with visitor visa application. Sometimes, mistakes in do-it-yourself application may influence the success of all your future visa applications. Therefore, it is always advisable to use the services of a migration agent especially if you are planning to later apply for any other type of Australian visa.

Application Charge Fees

If you apply for visitor visa subclass 600, the fee is $140 in case you apply from outside of Australia. If you want to extend your visa, the fee is $345. If you want subsequently to extend your stay again, you will need to pay $1,045.

An extension means that you need to apply for new visitor visa. With every new application you need to meet the requirements and hope that it will be approved.

Family members and their visitor visa

If you want to travel with your partner or your family to Australia, please be aware that every person needs to have a visa. That means that if a family of four wants to come to Australia and they need a visa, they need to apply for four visitor visas. The same applies if they want to extend their stay.

Rights with visitor visa

The visitor visa for Australia allows you to come to Australia for a holiday, short business trip or to visit family and friends.

This visa also allows its holders to: • Study in Australia for up to three months. • Work as a genuine unpaid volunteer, but only if an Australian resident would not otherwise be paid to do the work (you can be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses such as meals and accommodation).

Study in Australia while on visitor visa

If you already hold a visitor visa and you would like to apply for a short study course in Australia, please be free to contact us and we will gladly help you with the application. Also, our agency is at your disposal for enquiries about enrolment into the course, selection of the course, etc.

We offer consultation for people who want to cut their costs of application and need simply some guidance or would like an agent to look at their application and give some tips and/or advice prior to lodgement.

We also offer full service and super visa application service for clients from high-risk countries for which we usually prepare substantial documents and therefore increase their chances of approval.

You shouldn’t have any problem using a Visa, Mastercard or American Express card in Australia. But watch out for transaction fees that come with using a card.

Debit cards are typically the preferred option for making ATM cash withdrawals. If you don’t want to link your bank account to your card, however, consider a prepaid travel card — but watch out for its additional fees, too.

credit cards

Using a credit card

Since credit cards are a common payment method in Australia, you may want to consider a travel credit card .The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card , for example, doesn’t charge the normal foreign transaction fees, helping you keep more money in your wallet (Terms apply, see rates & fees ). You could earn rewards on your purchases and get travel insurance, luggage insurance or car rental insurance. With some cards, you could even get a concierge service, which can be helpful when traveling abroad.

Another option could be an airline cobranded card . This type of card helps you save money on flights, checked bags, lounge access and more. Some cards also come with complimentary travel insurance and similar perks.

  • ATM cash withdrawals using a credit card comes with cash advance fees and cash advance APR. Consider using a debit card instead.
  • Notify your bank of your travel plans to Australia.
  • Credit line access
  • May come with travel insurance and coverage
  • May come with concierge service
  • Cash advance fees on ATMs
  • Cash advance APR on ATMs

Which credit card issuers are accepted in Australia?

American Express and Discover cards are accepted in Australia, but Mastercard and Visa take the lead when it comes to reliable acceptance.

If you’re looking for an ATM that accepts your Amex, major banks like ANZ, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, St. George Bank and WBC allow cash withdrawals with your card. For Discover cards, look for Bank of China, Bank West, HSBC, iCash or ING ATMs.

Explore top debit cards with no foreign transaction fees and travel credit cards by using the tabs to narrow down your options. Select Compare for up to four products to see their benefits side by side.

  • Credit cards

Using a debit card

A debit card comes in handy for cash withdrawals since you won’t pay any cash advance fees or a cash advance APR. You’ll want to find a card that waives or reimburses foreign transaction and ATM fees, such as the Betterment Checking account which automatically reimburses pesky international ATM fees.

  • Use a debit card for ATM withdrawals and a credit card for purchases.
  • Notify your bank you will be traveling to Australia.
  • No cash advance fee
  • No cash advance APR
  • No overdraft
  • Weak or no rewards
  • No access to a credit line
  • Potential foreign transaction fees up to 3%
  • Potential ATM withdrawal fees

person at laptop with credit card and phone

Using a prepaid travel card

When it comes to staying protected against theft, using a prepaid travel card is your best option as it’s not linked to your bank account. However, travel cards can have expensive fees.

To avoid foreign transaction fees, try loading your prepaid travel cards with Australian dollars.

  • Can load Australian dollars
  • No link to your bank account
  • May take time to load

Australian currency notes

Paying with cash in Australia

In general, most establishments in Australia accept cards. However, carrying some cash is a good idea in case you stumble across a place that doesn’t.

Either exchange US dollars at a bank or make an ATM cash withdrawal. If you go for the latter, consider using a debit card and preferably one without foreign transaction fees or ATM fees.

  • Payment flexibility
  • Convenience
  • No need for ATMs
  • High risk of theft

Woman taking a check picture

Using traveler’s checks

Traveler’s checks aren’t widely accepted in Australia. This could make purchasing and cashing your checks a nuisance.

Considering checks come with foreign transaction fees and purchasing fees, they could become more expensive than they’re worth. In Australia, the other payment options could be better alternatives.

  • Not accepted everywhere
  • Fees for purchasing and cashing checks

What’s the Australian currency and where can I get the best exchange rate?

Australia uses the Australian dollar with a symbol $ and a currency code AUD.

You could exchange US dollars upon arrival, but the conversion rates at the airport usually aren’t favorable. An ATM cash withdrawal could give you a better rate.

The main banks in Australia are:

  • Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA)
  • Westpac Banking Corporation (Wespac)
  • Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ)
  • National Australia Bank (NAB)
  • Bank of Queensland
  • Macquarie Bank
  • Bendigo Bank
  • AMP Bank Ltd

Find ATMs in Australia

The Australian banking system has an extensive network, including offering ATMs inside banks, convenience stores, gas stations, shopping centers and on the streets. ATMs should accept both Mastercard and Visa, but you may see Visa’s Plus or Mastercard’s Maestro or Cirrus logos displayed. To avoid foreign transaction and ATM fees, go with a Betterment Checking debit card in hand, which reimburses these fees automatically.

Using money transfers to safely travel with cash

With WorldRemit you can send money to Australia before you depart. Once you arrive, pick it up from a local WorldRemit agent.

To make the transfer, you need to submit an Australian phone number and an address.

If you don’t have one, WorldRemit recommends submitting the phone and the address of the place you’ll be staying at. This is in case the local agent needs to contact you. But you can still pick up the money with only your passport.

Plastic is widely accepted throughout Australia. For best value, consider using a travel or an airline cobranded credit card for purchases and a debit card for ATM cash withdrawals. But make sure your cards have no foreign transaction fees.

Tourism and the visitor economy

Spectacular and unique, Australia is an aspirational tourism destination for international travellers.

Thinking about entering the Australian market?

  • Investors typically establish a new company, register as a foreign company or acquire an existing company. Assess your options with our Investor Guide .
  • Austrade is Australia’s national investment promotion agency. We attract and facilitate game-changing foreign direct investment into Australia. Our team of business and investment specialists can connect investors to early-stage opportunities in Australia and provide direct and tailored professional assistance. Find out how we can help .

We enjoy an enviable reputation for our world-class cultural and natural attractions, from pristine beaches and rainforest to the opportunity to experience the oldest living culture on Earth.

After ten years of constant growth, we welcomed almost 10 million visitors in 2019 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re also a high yield market, with international visitors staying long and spending big.

Supported by the Australian Government’s visitor economy strategy, THRIVE 2030 , the sector has resumed its path to long-term sustainable growth, creating new opportunities for investors.

Australians holiday at home

Operators in Australia also benefit from a strong domestic market.

Australians are enthusiastic travellers and love to explore their own backyard. Increased domestic demand during the pandemic has continued; and in 2022 overnight and day trip spending by domestic tourists surpassed pre-pandemic levels.

  • In a typical year, Australians account for around three-quarters of total tourism spend
  • Australians make more than five domestic overnight trips a year on average
  • In the September quarter 2022, spending on domestic overnight trips increased by 33% to A$27.8 billion, when compared to pre pandemic levels.
  • By 2027, annual domestic overnight trip and day trip expenditure is expected to reach A$137.9 billion and A$41.1 billion respectively.

Poised to grow

International tourism is beginning to recover following the recent global disruption from the pandemic. Tourism Research Australia predicts international visitor expenditure will exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2024 before increasing to A$48.8 billion by 2027.

With our proximity to fast-growing markets in the Asia-Pacific, we’re well-positioned to recapture a significant share of global travel spend.

Our long-term national strategy for the visitor economy, THRIVE 2030 , sets out our plan to return to pre-pandemic visitor expenditure of A$166 billion by 2024, and grow it to A$230 billion by 2030.

Australia’s political stability and resilient economy offers prospective businesses and investors a safe and low-risk business environment.

And the Australian Government is backing the further recovery of Australia’s visitor economy, with a new $48 million tourism and travel package announced in the October 2022 Budget. The measures include plans to:

  • attract workers to our vibrant tourism industry
  • train and upskill new and existing hospitality and tourism workers
  • support tourism businesses with activities that drive international travel to and from Australia.

Importantly, our THRIVE 2030 strategy supports sustainable growth. We know our natural assets, such as world-class nature and wildlife, are key to our attractiveness as a destination, and must be protected. In pursuing industry growth, we recognise that balancing social and environmental factors alongside economic ones is essential to sustain a truly healthy visitor economy for decades to come.

Gen Z travellers warned not to ‘skimp’ on travel insurance

Gen Z are making a big mistake when it comes to travel and while they’re doing it to save money, it can end up costing them big time.

Travel warning ahead of Swift concert

Gen Z are making a big mistake when it comes to travel and while they’re doing it to save money, it can end up costing them big time.

Aussies’ appetite for travel hasn’t diminished despite cost of living pressures, with 91 per cent of Australians planning to travel this year.

However, while the younger generation have the travel bug too, there’s a few things they are willing to forgo to help keep costs down such as taking fewer trips, splurging less on accommodation, booking cheaper destinations and the most “concerning” — not purchasing travel insurance.

Research reveals Gen Z are ‘skimping’ on travel insurance to ‘save a few dollars’.

New research from Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) revealed that 2.4 million Aussies say they won’t purchase travel insurance as a way to save costs due to financial pressures.

But, it can end up having the opposite effect, costing a lot more if things go pair-shaped on your trip.

“We’re seeing a concerning trend as Gen Z appear to be ditching travel insurance,” Jo McCauley, CEO at Southern Cross Travel Insurance told news.com.au

“According to our research twice as many Gen Zs are saying they won’t be purchasing travel insurance this year compared to Baby Boomers.

“We’re also seeing this trend represented in our policy sales with Gen Z only representing 17 per cent of our policyholders over the past 12 months, which is significantly less than other generations.”

Southern Cross Travel Insurance revealed Gen Z claimed the most for lost or stolen baggage and personal belongings, medical and evacuation and changes to journeys.

She said the categories claimed for the most often by Gen Z policyholders are lost or stolen baggage and personal belongings, medical and evacuation costs and changes to journeys.

“Travelling without travel insurance simply isn’t worth the risk,” Ms McCauley warned.

“We’ve seen medical bills in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for simple injuries like a broken bone. It’s a cliche but, it’s true — if you can’t afford travel insurance then you can’t afford to travel.”

She said she knows how tempting it might be to skimp on travel insurance to save a few dollars, but reinforced it’s not worth the risk.

Aussie travel blogger Jacki , who has clocked 1.5 million likes on TikTok for her jetsetting content, revealed she needed to have dentistry work done twice on a trip to Europe and was thankful she had taken out travel insurance.

Aussie travel blogger, Jacki, revealed in a TikTok, she was lucky to have taken out travel insurance during a recent trip to Europe after needing a filling and chipping her front tooth.

Jacki said the three things she always looks out for in an insurer is if they cover lost luggage, lost phones, dentistry and flight cancellations.

“So, my biggest fear when I travel is getting my luggage lost and turning up somewhere and having nothing and no money,” she explained.

“I always look at how much they cover for luggage and how long it takes them to give you the money for lost luggage — and how quick the process is to let them know that your luggage has been lost.”

She said had she not taken out cover, the costs for the dental work would have been ‘super expensive’.

She said the same goes for losing your phone, adding that she lost it during her Europe trip, but was lucky to have found it again.

“I obviously always look at medical cover because that’s what every travel insurance covers,” she said.

“But I also take extra care to look at dentistry cover because I have actually had to visit the dentist twice while travelling and it can get super expensive.

“I had a filling in Sweden and somehow chipped my front tooth on a night out in Greece and both times it was covered by dentistry, so always look at that too.”

Ms McCauley, from SCTI, said travel insurance doesn’t have to be expensive.

She also recommended looking at the company’s cover for lost luggage, lost phones, flight cancellations and delays.

“We offer an International Medical Only product which is a more cost effective option for those that are looking to protect themselves against medical costs while overseas but aren’t interested in cover for lost luggage or flight cancellations. It’s a great option for the more budget conscious traveller.”

The Future of Travel 2024 research, commissioned by SCTI, also revealed that 91 per cent of Aussies plan to travel either domestically or overseas in the next 12 months.

However, around 43 per cent say they are less likely to travel interstate over the next 12 months due to the rising cost of living, and more than half (53 per cent) say they are less likely to travel overseas this year for the same reason – both significant increases on 2023 figures (37 per cent and 48 per cent respectively).

More Coverage

It showed that Aussies plan to travel overseas for longer but take fewer trips compared to last year. The length of time Australian travellers intend to spend overseas has increased from 14 days per trip in 2023 to 16 days per trip in 2024. However, the average number of trips they take will be less than those who travelled last year.

According to SCTI data the most popular length of time for people to travel overseas is between seven and 13 days, with 35 per cent of policies selecting this time frame. T

his is closely followed by 14 to 20 days (2 per cent) and 21 to 27 days (17 per cent).

Travellers returning from Europe or Asia have been warned to carefully check their luggage.

The woman has demanded a refund from a popular cruise line after she was turned away at the dock.

Fans travelling to the first of Taylor Swift’s concerts are being warned to plan ahead.

Australian Budget Guide

Manage your budget and get the most out of your trip to Australia with a bit of clever planning. Read on to learn how to calculate the cost of a trip Down Under.

Understanding how much money you need to holiday in Australia depends on a number of factors. While you can certainly live life to the luxe here, you can also enjoy a budget-friendly holiday. From finding bargain flights to making the most of free attractions, here’s everything you need to know about how much it costs to eat, sleep and stay here. And how to save a bit of money along the way!

When to book your flight

Aerial View of Sydney Harbour, NSW © Destination NSW

Aerial View of Sydney Harbour, New South Wales © Destination NSW

So, you’ve decided to visit Australia? Great choice! Your next decision will be picking the right time of year to book your flights. Keep in mind, Australia is on the opposite side of the world to the Northern Hemisphere, so our travel periods are the opposite as well.

Flights are going to be most expensive if you’re visiting in summer (December to February) – when the sun is shining and the summer school holidays are in full swing. If you’re travelling at this time, it’s best to book flights 10 to 12 months ahead – before planes fill up and prices climb.

If you’re planning to visit Australia outside peak periods, you’ll still want to book seven to 10 months in advance. You’ll still find plenty of sunny days in shoulder seasons and off-peak periods, and the flights can be a few hundred (Australian) dollars cheaper.

Generally, the best flight deals are offered well in advance, so the earlier the better. There are exceptions to the rule, of course, but if you’re risk-averse, then it pays to have plans in place so you’re not disappointed.

How to save money on your flights:

  • Use a flight comparison site to find the best price – many have a ‘price alert’ function that will notify you when the price of flights drops.
  • Visit a few different airfare search engines and input your itinerary to see which site finds the cheapest flight options.
  • Speak to a travel agent who is an Aussie Specialist . They’re experts on travelling Australia and have the knowledge to help you plan and book the best options for you.
  • If you’ve decided to book everything yourself, book directly through airlines. Comparison sites and search engines are great research tools, but often you get even better deals when you book through your airline of choice. Many also offer price-matching promises.

Booking accommodation

Just like flights, booking your accommodation will partly depend on the time of year you’re visiting. There are a lot of different hotels and accommodation on offer in Australia, from free campsites to AUD$1,000+ per night luxury resorts, so availability will depend on where you’d like to stay.

If you’ve got your heart set on checking into a boutique hotel , you can expect to pay around AUD$250 per night. It’s best to book your stay well in advance – around six months for peak travel periods.

If you’re not fussed where you sleep, you can use last-minute hotel booking sites to lock in great deals just a day or two before you arrive – between around AUD$100 to AUD$200 per night. Accommodation providers don’t want empty rooms, and many offer unbeatable deals to fill them. Some sites let you set alerts, sending notifications when prices drop.

If you’re on a tight budget, there are affordable hostels all over Australia, starting from as low as AUD$20 for a dormitory bed and up to around AUD$85 per person for a private room. Most hostels have an incredible price to quality ratio – not to mention it’s a great way to make some new friends!

How to save money on your accommodation

  • Avoid peak travel periods, such as summer and school holidays .
  • If you have a favourite hotel chain, sign up for its newsletters to be alerted about deals and offers.
  • Look for accommodation where kids stay and/or eat free. It's often a perk offered at big resorts and hotels.
  • Consider sacrificing location for price. You can find great hotels with lower nightly rates just a bit further from the city centre or a few blocks back from the beach.

Activities in Australia

Booking organised tours and travelling with guides is the perfect way to get a complete and immersive experience Down Under – you’ll be able to learn from locals, get up close to the wonders of nature and won’t need to worry about managing your own schedule. Popular day tours, like whale watching and guided walks, cost around AUD$100 to AUD$200. If you’re booking high-demand activities – such as the Field of Light or swimming with whale sharks – secure your spot at least a month in advance to avoid disappointment. However, most activities, such as surf lessons (about AUD$120) and some sporting events (from around AUD$65), can be booked closer to the day.

If you’re a frugal traveller, you needn’t miss out on anything. From internationally acclaimed museums and galleries to world-class hiking , there are free activities aplenty in Australia. With just a little bit of research, you can self-guide to exquisite beaches and secluded lookouts by taking public transport (less than AUD$10 for the day) or renting a vehicle (from around AUD$50 per day). There are even free historical walking tours in major cities (although a donation of at least a few dollars is expected).

How to save money on your activities

  • Walk! With leafy streets, water views and colourful neighbourhoods to enjoy, walking is the best way to take the pulse of Australia.
  • Make the most of Mother Nature. Many of Australia’s greatest wilderness areas are free to visit (though a vehicle entry fee is charged in selected national parks in most states). From trekking through the rainforest to cooling off in waterfalls, getting outdoors is the ultimate way to see the country – for next to nothing.
  • Visit museums and galleries without spending a cent. Many galleries offer free entry on certain days or times. Most also have year-round free entry to permanent collections.
  • Check out multi-attraction tickets and family deals . Search online or check with reception staff at your accommodation for bundle packages that offer lower rates on group and family activities .

  • Take public transport. Australian public transport is used by practically all Aussies. It’s clean, convenient and safe to use, only costing around AUD$2 per trip compared to AUD$20–AUD$30 for a taxi or rideshare for a comparable journey. Daily caps on public transport fares apply in most major cities: you won’t spend more than around AUD$17 on a weekday in Sydney or around AUD$9 on a weekday in Melbourne . Weekend fare caps are lower still. Better yet, some public transport (such as the Melbourne city circle tram) is completely free.
  • Save when eating out. Restaurant meals can cost from around AUD$20, but you can get discounts of up to 50% with sites and apps that offer deals at restaurants across the city. You can also keep an eye out for daily specials, happy hours and weeknight deals.
  • Make your own meals. If you have access to a kitchen at your accommodation, try your hand at preparing some classic Aussie foods . You can shop at local markets for fresh, seasonal produce, including Australian native ingredients .
  • Refuel at the cheapest petrol stations. If you’re driving around Australia, keep in mind that not all petrol stations offer the same price. The cost of filling a tank can vary from one outlet to another nearby outlet by more than AUD$10.
  • Access the internet using free WiFi. You’ll find it in most restaurants, cafés, hotels, fast-food outlets, libraries and even shopping centres. There are also free public WiFi hotspots in major tourist precincts.

Nationals MP Andrew Willcox and Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie

Australian politicians spending two-thirds of time on the road at taxpayer expense, data shows

Nationals’ Bridget McKenzie and Andrew Willcox top list with more than $20,000 spent each on nights away from home

A handful of federal politicians are spending more than two-thirds of their time on the road and in hotels, with one Nationals MP billing taxpayers for accommodation nearly every night over a four-month period, latest travel expenses data shows.

Andrew Willcox, the first-time member for Dawson, spent 113 days travelling over a 116-day period between August and December 2022, according to the most recent independent parliamentary expense authority’s (Ipea) data.

Senators and MPs living in regional and rural areas of the country often rack up the highest travel and accommodation expenses in the quarterly report. North Queensland MP Willcox spent $21,125 and was staying in places other than his home for 97% of that time period, Guardian Australia’s analysis shows.

The latest batch of Ipea data, released Thursday evening, covers the period between October and December 2022. It was delayed after the reporting system went offline for a long period, resulting in a period of limited transparency over politicians’ expenses.

The expense authority explains parliamentarians are paid an allowance for each night they stay in accommodation away from their home base within the country. It includes expenses for cancelled official travel arrangements.

Willcox told Guardian Australia he was establishing his electorate office in Mackay and employing new staff.

“Unlike the electorate of Sydney, Dawson is a lot larger in size and the best way to meet with my constituents in regional areas is to get in the car and drive and spend time in each area,” he said.

“I won’t achieve much for my electorate sitting in my lounge room, and 53 [Guardian Australia counted 50] of those nights away, were in Canberra for parliament.”

But while Willcox topped the list as parliament’s biggest road-tripper for the quarter, he was not the only one to spend his nights in transit.

Ranking first in travel expenses was Victorian Nationals senator, Bridget McKenzie .

The shadow infrastructure minister’s travel allowance bill came up to $29,305 over a period of 108 days. Ninety-nine of those nights were spent in accommodation across regional Victoria and capital cities, averaging $296 a night.

McKenzie spent more than 90% of the three-month period on the road. A spokesperson said the additional travel related to the Albanese government’s October budget, which affected funding commitments promised under the former government.

“As Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development spokeswoman, Senator McKenzie visited eight capital cities and six regional cities during the reporting period,” the spokesperson said.

“The final months of 2022 also covers Senate estimates hearings, which Senator McKenzie also prosecuted.”

after newsletter promotion

Others high up on the list included Nationals MP, Colin Boyce, who has previously appeared on the list of big travel spenders.

Boyce said in his first year as the member for Flynn, he only spent 73 nights at home.

“The remaining 292 days I spent visiting local communities understanding each of their complex issues or in Canberra representing them in Parliament,” he said.

“I’m currently averaging over 50,000km a year to stay in touch with residents all over the electorate and will continue to ensure that every community in the Flynn electorate is strongly represented.”

The Queensland Greens senator, Penny Allman-Payne, who lives in Gladstone, spent 53 nights over a 76-day period in temporary lodgings.

She said she preferred to live in Gladstone, rather than relocating to Brisbane like other politicians do.

“Living regionally means I’m away from home more than some parliamentarians, but it gives me invaluable insights into the needs of Queenslanders who are often overlooked by the major parties,” Allman-Payne said.

The reporting system has frequently been used as a tool to expose MP expense scandals and rorts when taxpayer-funded expenses are stealthily used for reasons not covered under the guidelines.

Taylor Swift struck a deal with Singapore not to perform in any other Southeast Asian country

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has defended an exclusive deal his city-state struck with Taylor Swift that prevents the pop star taking her current Eras Tour to anywhere else in Southeast Asia. Swift is performing six concerts from March 2 to 9 in Singapore under an exclusive deal that has been criticized by some Southeast Asian neighbors who complain they have been deprived of the tourist boom that her concerts have brought elsewhere. Lee confirmed on Tuesday that Swift was provided with “certain incentives” from a government fund established to rebuild the tourism industry after COVID-19 disruptions to make Singapore her only Southeast Asian destination. MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Taylor Swift stole the show at an Asian summit Tuesday when Singapore’s leader was prompted to defend his tiny country’s exclusive concert deal with the singer that risks bad blood in the region by preventing her from performing in neighboring nations.

Singapore is a key member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations , a 10-nation bloc known as ASEAN. Its three-day summit was expected to focus on member Myanmar’s humanitarian crisis and conflicts in the South China Sea.

Instead, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was grilled on the summit’s sidelines about a lucrative and exclusive deal his city-state struck with Swift that prevents the singer from taking her Eras Tour to any other stop in Southeast Asia.

Swift is performing six concerts from March 2 to 9 in Singapore, and some Southeast Asian neighbors complain that the Singapore deal deprives them of the tourism boom her concerts bring to hosts. Her Eras Tour shattered records when it reportedly surpassed $1 billion last year , and her film adaptation of the tour quickly took No. 1 at the box office and became the highest-grossing concert film to date.

The Singaporean leader confirmed Tuesday that Swift was provided with “certain incentives” in exchange for making Singapore her only Southeast Asian destination on her Eras Tour. Lee defended the deal at a joint news conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, a self-professed Swiftie whose Spotify Wrapped list boasted Taylor Swift as his second most streamed artist of 2023. Albanese is hosting the summit in Melbourne, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Australia becoming ASEAN’s first external partner.

(AP Photo/Ohad Zwigenberg, File)

Lee did not reveal the cost of the exclusive deal, which was paid for from a government fund established to rebuild tourism after COVID-19 disruptions. He also did not directly answer when asked if he had encountered bad blood among other leaders due to the deal, instead suggesting that if Singapore hadn’t struck an exclusive deal, a neighboring country might have done so.

“It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don’t see that as being unfriendly,“ Lee said.

Thailand’s Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, brought attention to the deal in February with a public claim that a promoter told him the Singaporean government subsidized the concerts with around $2 million to $3 million per show with a condition that the artist not play anywhere else in Southeast Asia.

Srettha said that if he had known about the deal before, he was confident he would be able to pull off something similar.

But Thailand doesn’t hold it against Singapore, said Prommin Lertsuridej, the Secretary-General of the Prime Minister. He told reporters in a group interview Monday that Thailand took what Singapore did as an example, and while Thailand already has some laws in place to allow such incentive packages, the government is working to remove red tape and make Thailand a more attractive venue for international events.

“We learn from each other,” Prommin said, adding that he admired Singapore for being able to come up with and achieve this “good business idea.”

In February, Indonesian Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno took to Instagram to apologize to Swift’s fans, saying: “International music events, such as Taylor Swift concerts, do have a big impact on a country’s economy. But I’m sorry Swifties, Taylor Swift hasn’t stopped by in Indonesia yet. Bought out by Singapore. However, this is a lesson for us.”

Raisa Christy, a 37-year-old fan living in Jakarta, Indonesia, said she regretted that Swift’s closest stop by far was in Singapore. However, she believes it’s the only spot in the region that has the capabilities and infrastructure that meet Swift’s standards.

Lee said that, while he didn’t know what Australia’s arrangements were, he expected it similarly made “mutually acceptable, sensible arrangements” with Swift when she performed in Melbourne and Sydney — one of which Australia’s prime minister attended — before flying to Singapore.

Swift’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Other questions at the news conference covered increasing tensions in the South China Sea , the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the likelihood of China joining in a regional free trade pact.

Travis kelce’s life is changing–and he knows it’s because of taylor swift.

Before he met Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce was already famous. He was hugely successful, wealthy, and respected in his arena–literally. But even he couldn’t compete with the most celebrated and well-known musician on the planet.

As the two superstars continue to date, the media frenzy around the pair seems to grow with no end in sight. While he may be used to attention and some media scrutiny, Kelce seems to be learning just how crazy things can become when one is romantically entangled with the pop singer–and he knows why.

Kelce recently flew out to Australia to be with Swift while she was performing in the country on her The Eras Tour. Much of their time together was private, but they were photographed and filmed while taking a private tour of a local zoo. Photographers weren’t allowed in the zoo while they were there–or at least not near them–but that didn’t stop a helicopter or two from getting some shots that spread across the internet like wildfire.

The football player seems to be taking the intrusion with heart. Maybe it’s because he knows that they’re not chasing the couple because of him, but rather because of her.

On a recent episode of the New Heights podcast, which is hosted by Kelce and his brother, now-former football player Jason, he mentioned the vacation. “They helicoptered us,” Kelce commented when the topic came up. He quickly corrected himself, saying, “Well, not us — Taylor.”

He didn’t seem bitter about the fact that his girlfriend is much more popular than he is. Instead, he explained why he felt the world, and thus the media, loved her so much. “This is all because Taylor is the biggest and the best thing possible,” he stated.

Google’s Surprise Update Just Made Android More Like iPhone

Trump suddenly flips on bitcoin as tipping point powers price to fresh all time high over 70 000 amid ethereum and xrp etf speculation, whatsapp suddenly issues surprise update warning for all users.

Kelce and his brother speak openly about the budding relationship, which has become a topic of conversation in almost all entertainment circles. Publications regularly churn out content connected to them, and every time one visits the other–either for a concert or a game–it’s a moment. The two were first linked in September 2023, and since then, they’ve been seen together many times, and they’ve made their relationship status clear.

Of course, all this attention is not just fun for Kelce, it’s good for business. Sales of his jersey spiked shortly after the couple went semi-public. He scored a hit on the Billboard charts, in part because of his newfound popularity. The recent Super Bowl champion is also working on a slate of projects, from possible TV gigs to producing films—and much of it can be traced back to his somewhat newfound fame.

Virgin Australia announces small dogs and cats to be allowed in cabin on domestic flights

Virgin Australia has announced it plans to become the country's first airline to allow pets to ride onboard.

Small cats and dogs will be allowed on specific domestic flights with the service expected to launch within the next 12 months, subject to regulatory approval.

The proposed changes will allow pets onboard a limited number of designated rows and they will need to remain in a Virgin-approved pet carrier for the whole flight.

Jayne Hrdlicka_Brisbane Airport.jpg

Virgin Australia group chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka said this is a change that travellers want.

"Our love for animals has always been in the Virgin Australia DNA and we are excited at the prospect of taking off with Australia's first-ever pets in cabin flights," Ms Hrdlicka said.

"Overwhelmingly, our guests tell us they want to travel with their pets, and we are now on a journey to make that a reality."

She said it's something that commonly happens overseas and is proven to work well.

"This is only a domestic opportunity for dogs and cats to travel onboard, it's a little complicated to do that internationally."

Ms Hrdlicka said the airline was working with the service regulator to figure out what the service might cost travellers.

Pet carriers must fit under the seat in front in designated rows under the plan.

She said the designated rows will also allow passengers who do not want to be near animals to book a seat away from them.

Australians want pets in cabins, survey results show

Virgin Australia surveyed its Facebook followers in 2021 and saw 85 per cent of respondents voting in favour of the airline launching pets in cabin flights.

"Almost 70 per cent of Australian households have a pet, so this announcement is really significant for a large proportion of the country," Ms Hrdlicka said.

Ms Hrdlicka said the service is only for dogs and cats: "no snakes, no birds, no hamsters, no rabbits, unfortunately those guys have to stay home."

Melbourne Airport chief executive Lorie Argus said the airport has been working with the airline to help a seamless transition.

"Animals being carried onboard Virgin Australia flights will be required to remain in their approved pet carriers at all other times within the terminal," Ms Argus said.

"We expect the pets in cabin concept will prove a popular offering and we look forward to working with Virgin Australia to make it a reality."

Two air hostess lie next to a dog wearing a pilot costume.

Ms Hrdlicka said there will be spots for dogs to go to the toilet at airports, but pets won't be out and about in the terminal.

"Dogs and cats must stay in the carrier from the moment they get to the airport until they get to the other side."

She said it would be up to owners to manage their animals, just like parents manage their small children on flights.

Pets are currently required to be checked into cargo unless they are authorised service dogs.

There will be no changes to the way authorised service dogs travel under the new plan.
