How to get from Lima to Paracas

Are you looking for tips on how to get from Lima to Paracas?

Paracas is by far one of the most popular trips you can take from Lima.

Here we can find the picturesque Ballestas Islands, which are home to lots of breathtaking wildlife and even some ancient ruins too .

Whilst most only visit for the day, there’s actually more going for this town than you’d otherwise think, so it’s worth exploring further before deciding on how long to spend here.

What's in this guide?

Lima to Paracas

In this guide we’ll explore some of the most popular ways of getting from Lima to Paracas. We’ll also take a look at where to stay as well as some tips based on our time spent here.

Paracas Quick Summary:

  • 📍 Where is it: Western Peru
  • 🗺 Difficulty Getting There: Very Easy
  • ⏱ Time needed: 1-2 days
  • ☀️ Best Time to Visit: November-January

Where is Paracas, Peru?

Paracas is located along the Pacific coast of Peru , roughly halfway down the country. This makes it a really easy day trip from the capital, and it’s no surprise that Paracas has now become a major stop for travelers heading around the Southern Peruvian Loop.

statue lima peru

The climate is definitely more arid than that of Lima , and you can enjoy more blue skies here. Just remember to bring an extra layer since the evening can get cooler (especially when heading between the months of June to September).

Is Paracas worth visiting from Lima?

Not often do small towns become part of a major itinerary around a South American country, however Paracas is one of those exceptions in Peru.

It’s home to the incredible Ballestas Islands , where you’ll find penguins, sea lions and thousands of birds flying in perfect formations over the sea.

ballestas islands peru

If you only have the day free, then I highly recommend visiting Paracas and these islands with this day trip from Lima .

Along the way you’ll visit Huacachina and get to sandboard in the desert, as well as have all transport and breakfast included.

How far is Paracas from Lima?

Paracas is located roughly 250 km south of Lima, which is 3 hours driving distance (or 4 hours if taking the bus).

If going for the day then it’s best to wake up early and head on a bus, where you can be here by the late morning. We actually recommend the day trip, although travelers should try to spend more a few more days in Lima before embarking on this trip.

It’s also important to remember that trips out to the Ballestas Islands stop running in the mid-afternoon, so try and get here as early as possible.

Paracas is also located close to the city of Ica (89 km), so if you’re already here then it’s even easier and quicker to make the trip over.

Where to stay in Paracas?

Travelers who are backpacking or trying to stick to a budget will want to stay at the Kokopelli Hostel . Known for its great atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to meet other travelers and chill out in its on-site swimming pool.

If you want a private room instead, then Hotel Munay is a great option. As well as having a private en-suite bathroom, you’ll also be just a couple of blocks away from the main beach in Paracas.

Those after a more luxurious stay will want to consider Casa Paracas . Here you’ll be staying in a beautiful, sleek private room, along with air-conditioning and on-site barbecue facilities. They also organize tours and private shuttles to the airport.

Got travel insurance for Peru?

Overall getting from Lima to Paracas is very easy, and through our experience here we’ve found 3 main ways of making the trip .

Bus from Lima to Paracas

The bus is the best way for independent travelers to get to Paracas from Lima, and is also the cheapest option costing $14 for a one-way ticket . The bus ride takes 4 hours.

PerúBus are one of the best providers to go with, since they make the trip directly (usually you’d have to otherwise change in either Pisco or Ica). They currently have two departures from La Victoria Bus Station in Lima, leaving at 4:00am and 12:45pm.

You can book tickets online at RedBus to easily make plans in advance. Whilst the bus ride itself is safe, just take care since La Victoria can be sketchy (stay within the bus terminal, especially when waiting for the earlier departure).

Driving from Lima to Paracas

Driving is also another option to make the trip, and is best for those who want ultimate flexibility (since the bus only has a few departures daily, and also as the group tour times are fixed).

A word of warning however; that driving in Lima is a different beast. I (George) have lived here for a while, and even basic driving etiquette is not followed (such as switching lanes or even stopping at red traffic lights). As a result it can be a really stressful experience, and not a great idea for us travelers out to have a good time.

I’d only recommend renting a car when heading from Lima to Paracas if you’re used to driving in South America (or Peru specifically). Hertz and SIXT are some of the best car rental companies to choose from in Lima, whose offices are located right outside the Jorge Chávez International Airport.

Small Group Tour to Paracas

Out of the three options, this is one of the most popular and is best for travelers who are short on time .

huacachina peru

On this memorable Day Tour from Lima , you’ll be picked up from your hotel and first visit the oasis town of Huacachina. Located within the Ica Desert, you’ll be able to go Sandboarding as well as fly around the dunes in an adrenaline-pumping buggy ride (both activities are included).

You’ll then head to Paracas where you’ll visit the Ballestas Islands, and also enjoy the beach and landscapes from town.

As well as all activities and a hearty breakfast, you’ll also have a private vineyard tour included too (the Ica region is famous for its particular blends).

Getting from Lima to Paracas

And that’s all for this guide on how to get from Lima to Paracas. This once-quiet fishing village has now turned into a major stop when backpacking through Peru .

Not only can you visit the Ballestas Islands, you can also relax on remote beaches and enjoy the peaceful small-town vibes.

In this guide we’ve explored how to get from Lima to Paracas, as well as where to stay and what to do.

Excellent bus stop, checking of baggage and ID. Felt very safe and the driver was great.

This is from someone who was skeptical about some of the negative reviews, it was punctual, extremely comfortable, quiet, and professional. Highly recommend.

Comfy seats with plenty of reclination, air conditioning and storage. No headphones provided to use with the TV screens (and all content appeared to be Spanish only) but brought my own entertainment so no big deal.

The TV was on the whole time and the sound was incredibly loud even tough nobody was watching. My noice canceling headphones could not handle it. Why ruin the nice bus ride with noisy and bad movies?

Lima to Paracas express. Made several stops along the way to fill the bus so wasn't exactly express.b also stopped in Pisco. Terminal is hectic and difficult to get to with traffic. Bus was clean and comfortable though. Would use again.

I arrived 3.33am and they didn’t leave to take the bus. The bus was on place, I got in and the bus started to move. The driver was opening the door for me but the lady outside wave to him saying just keep going on. I had to buy another ticket and they were not helpful.

Additional information to help choose what bus company to take:.

  • Some bus companies, such as the hop on hop off companies, do pick you up from wherever you’re staying, which is a much more secure and safer service rather than having to take local taxis. Going with public bus companies you will always have to travel to the terminal meaning there is the need to find out where the terminal is and organising transport to on the day of travel.
  • This varies from company to company. The best way to find out the safety record of any bus company is to put the name of the company with the words “hijackings” or “accidents” and googling the results. This way you will be able to see which companies are the best.
  • Most companies will have TV’s, toilets (how clean the toilets are depend on the company) and semi-cama or cama seats. All important factors which help determine the best company.
  • You will find while doing research that different companies offer different things. Some companies have special luxury class buses that come at a higher price, some companies, such as Cruz del Sur, have loyalty point schemes and other companies, such as Peru Hop, offer discounts on accommodation and other things. Make sure to check out a couple of different companies to see what benefits you can get and which will be the best for you.

Paracas Tours from Lima

travel from lima to paracas

To truly enjoy what Paracas has to offer, you need to travel with the BEST rated Paracas Tours from Lima in 2024. And no better option than the Full Day Paracas Tour , operated by Peru Hop!

The beach town of Paracas, home to the Paracas National Reserve and the Ballestas Islands also known as the “Mini Galapagos”, is probably the best place in Peru to visit the Pacific coast.

Within just a few square kilometers, you can see enigmatic archaeological sites, jaw-dropping desert scenes, stunning beaches, and an extraordinarily diverse array of avian and marine wildlife. The best part about Paracas is that it’s only about a four hour drive from Lima, making it a super convenient location for a quick trip from the capital, either as a day tour or as a stop on a longer trip of the country.

Must-See & Visit In Paracas

Nicknamed “The Mini Galapagos”, it’s the most well-known attraction for travelers in Paracas. Given the nickname due to the similarity to the Galapagos at a way better price, these rocky islands off the Pacific coast of Peru are an essential stop for any nature lover. The islands are home to hundreds of species of animals such as the endangered Humboldt penguin, seals, many subtropical birds (the blue-footed booby, guanay, etc), and much more exotic and interesting wildlife.

Quick tip: The best way to get to Paracas while seeing some of Peru’s hidden gems is by traveling with one of Peru Hop’s passes ! Make sure to check them out and find your perfect option.

El Candelabro

On the way to the Ballestas Islands, visitors will pass El Candelabro, a large prehistoric petroglyph of unknown origin spanning over 150m high and 50m wide. There is still no definite answer as to why it was etched on the sandy hills but there are many theories with the most reasonable being that it was used as a navigational guide for ancient sailors.

paracasblog-candelabro

Like the Ballestas Islands, the Paracas National Reserve is a protected area for many important wildlife species, particularly birds. In total, the reserve is home to 74 species of plants, 216 species of birds, 16 types of mammals, 10 species of reptiles and 193 species of fish. The main attraction, however, is the scenery. This peninsula represents a point where the driest desert on Earth meets the Pacific Ocean, creating a very picturesque and dramatic landscape. There are several coastal areas and beaches with their own unique appearance: the tiny finish village of Lagunillas , the stunning red sand beach of Playa Roja and the secluded cove of Playa de la Mina, among others.

How to visit the Paracas National Reserve & Islas Ballestas

Since the town of Paracas is only a small outpost existing primarily as a hub for travelers visiting the area’s sights, there are only a couple bus companies which offer service directly to Paracas from Lima. Once in Paracas, it will also be necessary to purchase the relevant entrance tickets and arrange transportation to the islands or reserve independently. There are many different tourist agencies and transportation companies offering these services within Paracas.

The best way to avoid any hassle, however, is to book a trip with Peru Hop. The Full Day Tour on offer right now will pick you up directly at your hostel in Miraflores and bring you to both the Paracas National Reserve and the Ballestas Islands, plus an EXCLUSIVE tour through the Secret Slave Tunnels in Chincha. Trips depart every day and offer FREE extra stops such as the Paracas National Reserve for no extra charge. Since transportation, hostel/hotel pick-up and drop-off, accommodation, entry prices, etc. are included, all you’ll have to worry about is the cost of food. It’s really the best and most convenient way to visit these locations.

All Peru Hop passes make it easy to add a Ballestas Islands tour when heading to Paracas.

About the ride from Lima to Paracas

The bustling city of Lima is a place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. Apart from its many natural and man-made attractions, the capital city of Peru happens to be a launching pad for the many other adventures this magnificent country has to offer. One of the experiences you definitely don’t want to miss is a trip from Lima to Paracas.

Paracas is a coastal town well-known for its natural wonders. From its mysterious prehistoric geoglyphs, to spectacular wildlife sanctuaries, this place has all the ingredients for an epic adventure. Its beaches are pretty spectacular, too, making it well worth visiting even if you’re not the adventurous type

Located 160 miles (257 km) south of Lima, Paracas is a place you can explore on a daily trip (as long as you get an early start). To make the journey, you’ll have a couple of options.

Number one, you can hop on one of several direct bus lines . Lima to Paracas bus lines boast as many as 19 departure times, giving you tons of flexibility to plan your outing. Buses to Paracas are also pretty affordable, making them the preferred option with tourists.

Another way to go from Lima to Paracas is by car. There are multiple car rental companies in the capital. We recommend that you get yours from one of the bigger operators if you want a well-maintained vehicle.

What to see when traveling from Lima to Paracas

The road from Lima to Paracas will take you along Peru’s Pacific coast. After conquering Lima’s traffic jams, you’ll be off to the races via the Carretera Panamericana Sur (South Pan-American Highway).

For the most part, you’ll be navigating desert-like terrain, so you’ll often find yourself peering to the right, and the expansive blues of the Pacific ocean. Sometimes, the ocean will be out of sight, but if you’re driving, it’s just as well - eyes on the road! Speaking of roads, the highway is well-maintained, despite Peru’s reputation for less-than-ideal roads.

After a couple of hours, the scenery starts to brighten up with more and more natural greenery starting to pop up. If you’re going by car, you can make a stop at one of the beaches in the Cerro Azul District.

Alternatively, you can drive a little longer and check out the Casa Hacienda San José near Chincha Alta. The storied colonial mansion-turned hotel is a 17th century relic where you can learn about Afro-Peruvian culture, and even explore elaborate escape tunnels.

As you make your way into Paracas, you’ll quickly realize just how special this place is. Seamlessly joining ocean with the desert, the landscape offers a pretty unique blend of colors and textures. If you’re into photography, you’re really going to love this place!

Affectionately named Peru’s Mini Galapagos, the Ballestas Islands are home to one of the world's largest seabird sanctuaries, as well as huge numbers of penguins and sea lions! And then there’s the island’s famous Paracas Candelabra, a mysterious geoglyph created by who-knows-who, as if to mark the place as ‘special’.

Once you’ve explored the beauties of Paracas, you can head over to the nearby town of Ica. Here, you can feast your eyes on the Huacachina Lagoon , a fairytale-like oasis in the middle of the desert. Seriously, if you’re looking to make pictures you’ll brag about later, this is the place to be.

And if you’re up for tasting one of Peru’s world famous vintages, pay a visit to one of the many local Pisco vineyards – you won’t regret it!

How to Get from Lima to Paracas

Taking a bus If you’re looking for an easy and affordable way to get from Lima to Paracas, look no further than getting a bus. There are 3 operators to choose from: Peru Bus, Cruz del Sur, and Oltursa. Between them, they offer 19 departure time options, which makes planning your trip a real breeze.

Each offers a different set of amenities spread across the Economy, 130 Reclining Seats, 160 Reclining Seats, and Tourist options. A ride on the $17 entry-level Economy bus from Peru Bus offers A/C, toilets, reclining seats, a TV, as well as snacks.

The mid-range Tourist and 160 Reclining Seats Oltursa buses offer A/C, toilets, reclining seats, and snacks, plus WiFi, and have English speaking staff, which is very convenient. Tickets for the Oltursa buses are $21 for the Tourist option and $27 for the 160 Reclining Seats one.

And then there’s the top of the range Cruz del Sur with its 130 and 160 Reclining Seats options. These buses boast all the amenities the other two operators offer, plus blankets to keep you warm and chargers for your phone. The prices for the two Cruz del Sur buses are $23 and $28, respectively.

Taking a car Going from Lima to Paracas by car is undoubtedly a more flexible way of traveling between the two cities. You get to do things at your own pace, and explore (or not) exactly the attractions you want. But things aren’t as simple as just that.

Car rentals in Lima typically range between $20 and $40 for a small car. If you’d prefer to get an SUV, expect to pay double the price. And that doesn’t cover insurance, which some companies require.

Gasoline prices in Peru hover around $3.80 per gallon, which is not a deal-breaker, but still something you should consider.

Desert cliffs overlooking a narrow strip of beach on the Pacific Ocean in Paracas.

Visit Paracas for sunny weather, desert dunes overlooking the sea, pisco and wine tours, and a rollicking community of marine fauna on the Ballestas Islands. If you’ve got a packed itinerary, Paracas is the perfect place to unwind down by the bay.

Paracas provides access to the Paracas National Reserve, a pristine desert kingdom where enormous colonies of sea lions, sea birds, and innumerable ocean denizens gather to feast on the nutrient-rich waters off the Peruvian coast . Enjoy the mesmerizing desert dunes or greet the wildlife on the Ballestas Islands. After a nature-packed day, luxuriate at a resort pool overlooking the beautiful Paracas bay.

If you’ve got extra time, consider a Nazca Lines flight. Planes depart from the nearby Pisco airport and you'll be back in Paracas with time to watch the sunset. Other options for thrill seekers include kayaking, bike tours or quad tours in the Paracas reserve, and dune buggy and sandboarding tours.

Climate & Weather

Paracas enjoys a warm and pleasantly dry desert climate throughout the year. There is virtually no rainfall, and lots of sunshine so that you can enjoy the array of outdoor activities year round. The weather does shift slightly from a warmer summer season to a cooler winter season.

From December to March Daily Average: 80°F (27°C)

From June to September Daily Average: 60°F (18°C)

“Paracas” derives from Quechua words meaning “rain of sand” and refers to the strong winds that regularly whip across the sandy coastline and peninsula. Wind speeds average between 25 to 60 km/h (15 to 37 mi/h).

The coastal mainland is desert dry with an arid climate and little vegetation. But it’s a different story in the ocean. Flowing up the coast of South America from Antarctica, the cold-water, nutrient-rich Humboldt Current sustains an incredible diversity of marine wildlife including the famous sea lions and guano birds of the Ballestas Islands .

Best Time to Visit

The best months are in the summertime from December to March, when the days are hot and the sky is clear. The Paracas seaside is especially busy during this time and attracts Peruvians on their summer holiday.

Best time for wildlife viewing depends on what wildlife you wish to see. Depending on the season, you might see different species of birds or aquatic animals. For example, penguins are best seen from April to November. Sea lions are here all year round in the hundreds, so don’t worry about missing them.

Geography & Map

  • On the coast of Peru about 3 hours south of Lima, the hammerhead-shaped Paracas Peninsula juts out into the Pacific Ocean. The northern edge of the peninsula curves out and up to form the Paracas Bay.
  • Elevation 0 to 7 ft (0 to 2 m) City Population: 7,009

The Paracas Peninsula dates back to 900 BC and is named after the Paracas culture. The people were fishermen and farmers who cultivated beans, maize and red peppers. From excavations at the Paracas Necropolis, we know that the Paracas were exceptionally skilled craftsmen. Obsidian knives, fine pottery, shell and bone necklaces, gold ornaments, and finely woven textiles have been found in subterranean tombs. The dry climate and the lack of light in the underground burial chambers ensured the preservation of these artifacts.

travel from lima to paracas

On September 8, 1820 AD, the “Freedom Expedition” headed by the Argentine general Jose de San Martin landed on Paracas Bay with more than 4,000 soldiers. He is said to have drawn up ideas for the Peruvian flag during this stay and that the pink flamingo, a resident of the Paracas peninsula, inspired the flag’s red-and-white colors. The liberation force later marched to Lima in the effort to free the South American colonies from Spanish imperial rule.

In 1925, a team of archaeologists led by Julio C. Tello began excavating the Paracas Cavernas, a communal burial site dating to 300-200 BC. Tello began to excavate the Wari Kayan site. The team found mummy bundles wrapped in cloths, feathered costumes, fine jewelry, and food offerings. Textiles from Nazca culture were also found in Paracas site. The two sites together are known as Paracas Necropolis. In 1975, the Peruvian government created the Paracas National Reserve.

Things to Do

travel from lima to paracas

Rent a Bike

Grab a rental bicycle and venture out to the coastal desert expanses of the Paracas Peninsula. Riding on two wheels (as opposed to a car) gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. The challenge, though, is that winds kick up in the afternoon and you might be in for some extra work if you find a strong headwind.

Rent an ATV

Quads (ATVs) are an excellent option for those who want a bit of a thrill as they traverse the peaceful Peruvian desert. These guided tours are especially good at taking you to hidden spots on the peninsula that you wouldn’t have otherwise seen.

Ride the Dunes

If the sight of sand dunes tempts you to hurl yourself down a slippery slope with a board strapped to your feet, take a dune tour from Paracas or Pisco. Dune buggy drivers take passengers out into the Ica Desert. Stops include low dunes where beginners can learn basic skills and safety techniques, and then higher dunes where the brave of heart can gain more speed on steep descents.

travel from lima to paracas

Splurge & Relax Poolside

If you’ve got a packed itinerary, your Paracas hotel is a great place to relax and renew your energy before tackling your next adventure. Paracas boasts a wide choice of reasonably priced beach resorts with gorgeous swimming pools overlooking Paracas Bay. Enjoy the beauty of the landscape, sip on a pisco cocktail, and bask in the warmth of the sun arching its course overhead.

Water Sports

Paracas Bay’s flat water and strong winds make it ideal grounds for the practice of a variety of water sports. If you’re game, check with your Paracas resort to borrow the equipment you need to kayak, windsurf, and kitesurf. Paragliding tours are also available.

Nazca Lines Tour

The Pisco Airport is located at the southern end of Pisco town, about 6 mi (10 km) from Paracas. It is not usually open for commercial flights, however charter aircraft do provide Nazca Lines flyover tours. Check out our Nazca guide for more information about seeing these enigmatic lines.

Huacachina Oasis

While nature lovers flock to Paracas, thrill seekers are drawn like bees to honey to Huacachina and its blue-green lagoon. Located about 1 hour and 15 minutes by car from Paracas, and just outside of Ica, the oasis town is surrounded by 100-foot sand dunes.

Paracas, Peru: Ultimate Guide with 40+ Things to Do!

Posted on Last updated: February 9, 2024

Are you ready to visit Paracas, Peru, a hidden gem on the Lima peninsula? This captivating coastal town offers a unique blend of natural beauty and fascinating history, with breathtaking sea life to discover.

Whether planning an escape from your country to  South America or are stopping in Paracas, Peru on your South American cruise adventure, make sure you take advantage of the opportunities provided by the beautiful culture and breathtaking scenery.

paracas peru what to do

History and Background of Paracas

Paracas, a word that might sound mysterious to many, yet to the indigenous Quechua people, it translates to “sand rain,” echoing the whispers of the sprawling desert and gusty winds that sculpt its dunes.

The region isn’t just a mesmerizing blend of desert and ocean, but it’s also a canvas painted with stories spanning millennia.

The Ancient Paracas Culture

Long before the world-famous Incan Empire graced the landscapes of Peru, the Paracas culture thrived here around 800 BCE.

Renowned for their intricate textiles, sophisticated pottery, and peculiarly elongated skulls, these early inhabitants have left a profound mark on the archaeological history of the Americas.

The nearby Julio C. Tello Museum offers an exquisite display of these artifacts, providing a window into their daily lives, beliefs, and death rituals.

The Paracas National Reserve

Established in 1975, the Paracas National Reserve encapsulates the very essence of the region’s biodiversity. Spanning over 335,000 hectares, it protects both terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

It’s not only a haven for flamingos, sea lions, and countless bird species but also home to archaeological sites revealing traces of the Paracas culture.

The juxtaposition of the fiery red beaches, turquoise waters, and golden desert creates a picturesque spectacle that’s nothing short of breathtaking.

The Candelabra Geoglyph

Staring enigmatically from the sandy hills is the Paracas Candelabra, a geoglyph over 150 meters long and believed to date back to 200 BCE. Its purpose remains shrouded in mystery, with theories ranging from a navigational guide for sailors to a religious symbol.

The Spanish Conquest and Colonial Era

While the ancient cultures imbued Paracas with a rich heritage, the Spanish conquest in the 16th century ushered in a new chapter.

The colonial era influenced local architecture, art, and traditions, traces of which are evident even today.

Modern Paracas

Today, Paracas is a harmonious blend of its ancient legacies and modern luxuries. As tourism booms, the town is emerging as a hotspot offering diverse experiences – from luxury resorts to eco-tours, and from vibrant festivals to serene beach getaways.

This region, with its deep historical roots and contemporary charms, beckons travelers to dive into an immersive journey through time and nature.

Embracing the Heart of Paracas

Local legends and stories.

Paracas Peru, a land steeped in history, is home to many tales that have been passed down through generations. Here are a few you might hear whispered in the sea breeze or shared by a local over a meal:

  • The Legend of the Candelabra: A massive geoglyph etched into a sandy hill, some say it’s an ancient guidepost, while others believe it’s connected to the Nazca Lines. There are tales that it represents the cactus plant used in sacred rituals.
  • Stories of the Sea: Paracas is heavily influenced by the ocean. Listen for tales of mermaids or sirens, who’d sing songs to allure fishermen.

Delving into Paracas Culture

The heart of Paracas is its people and their traditions:

  • Festivals: Celebrations like the Festival of the Sea pay homage to Paracas’ marine life and the importance of the ocean. Dancers, musicians, and parades fill the streets, while locals prepare seafood feasts.
  • Daily Life: Don’t be surprised to see locals fishing in traditional boats, called ‘caballitos de totora,’ a practice dating back thousands of years.

Conversing in the Local Tongue: Quick Language Tips

While Spanish is widely spoken, a few phrases can bring smiles to the locals:

  • “¡Hola!” – Hello
  • “¡Gracias!” – Thank you
  • “¿Cuál es la leyenda detrás de esto?” – What is the legend behind this?
  • “¡Me encanta Paracas!” – I love Paracas!

It’s always appreciated when visitors make an effort to speak the local language, even if it’s just a word or two!

Craftsmanship in Paracas: A Testament to Tradition

Wander the markets or little boutiques, and you’ll find:

  • Textiles: Colorful fabrics and textiles often depict stories, legends, or daily life. They’re made using techniques passed down through generations.
  • Jewelry: Look for pieces incorporating locally sourced materials, reflecting both the desert and the sea.
  • Hand-carved Totems: Drawing inspiration from myths and legends, these are a testament to the region’s rich past.

About Your Expert Guides

Chefs Nando Chang & Valerie Chang Cumpa grew up in Chiclayo, Peru, and moved to the United States when they were 12 and 10 years old, respectively, where they spent their childhood watching father Papa Fernando cook. The Chang’s cooking style developed as they explored their connection with the food of their birthplace. In 2018, Val, Nando, and their father, Fernando, opened Itamae in the Miami Design District food hall. The following year the team opened a fast-casual offshoot concept, B-Side, inside popular Food Hall 1-800-LUCKY.

In 2020, Itamae graduated into a stand-alone space in the Design District’s Palm Court. In 2021, Itamae made The New York Times’ prestigious Restaurant List, and in 2022 the restaurant was honored with a Michelin Bib Gourmand on the guide’s inaugural Miami list. In March 2023, Val opened Maty’s, named after her grandmother, in Miami’s Midtown neighborhood. The menu at Maty’s offers a modern take on comida criolla, the traditional Peruvian food of the Chang’s upbringing.

Maty’s was named among Bon Appetit’s 24 Best New Restaurants and also earned a place on The New York Times’ Restaurant List, with Val and Nando being the first siblings to be named together to Food & Wine magazine’s coveted Best New Chefs Class of 2023. Itamae is currently transitioning locations and will be reopening as a tasting counter next to Maty’s in the spring of 2024.
