Nina Conti: ‘Monkey is a weapon against my father, a version of me who can stand up to him’

As she sets off on tour, ventriloquist and comedian nina conti talks rebellion, misogyny, and how a puppet helped her to find her voice.

Nina Conti Credit: Matt Crockett Provided by peter@peterleonepr.co.uk

Every four or five years, Nina Conti performs invasive surgery on a small brown monkey puppet. First she removes his jaunty safari suit, then she rummages around in his little head, pulls out a bit of stuffing, removes his squeaker, and cuts a couple of holes around the back of his jaw, making just enough room for her to get her hand inside and transform the monkey into Monkey, her faithful, sweary stage companion for the past 20 years.

Conti, 48, has gone through four or five Monkeys since she first began performing as a ventriloquist. Once she’s converted them from child’s toy into ventriloquist’s dummy, they have a life span of around five years before their latex mouths crack and their fur starts to rip. Conti keeps them all and occasionally, because her act is nothing if not archly meta, brings them out on stage to spook her audience, “like ghosts of the past”, she says.

Once, at the beginning of her career, she flew to Austria to perform and made the mistake of putting Monkey in the hold. He was lost and Conti, devastated, flew straight back home without performing and started to look for a replacement. “This was pre-internet and I had to phone all the toy shops in London asking, ‘do you have a puppet of a monkey in a safari suit?’”

These days, she buys spares whenever she finds them online, often second-hand and has, she thinks, five Monkeys left in her stocks. “Which is enough,” she smiles. “To last my lifetime.”

Conti is currently on tour with a new show in which she – and Monkey – play matchmaker with the audience in what she calls “the world’s first ventriloquial dating show”.

Performing a preview of it at London’s Soho Theatre, Conti, in a vivacious red mini dress, talks to the audience, drawing them out about their relationships, their dating history, what they might be looking for in a partner while Monkey – tiny, cute, with a Scottish accent and an irredeemably foul mouth – speaks his mind, providing a running commentary on what his handler is really thinking and calling out her “disingenuous shit”, to the raucous delight of the crowd.

Aside from Monkey, the audience provides Conti’s other dummies: she gets them up on stage, straps grotesquely large mouth masks across their faces and speaks for them as they go on a date or talk about their love life. “I’ve been putting masks on people for years,” says Conti.

“We didn’t know how ahead of the curve we were,” adds Monkey.

A cool young woman is given a laconic posh drawl and made to talk incessantly about how she wants a rich boyfriend. A couple who met on Tinder appear to sing each other a song about intimacy. And all the while Conti stands in the middle, moving their mouths with a lever in each hand, not moving her own, and thinking, gloriously, on her feet.

“I can’t rehearse it,” she says. “It feels high wire. I’m just following my heart all the time. But that’s the reason I find it so thrilling.” Does she at least have to train to throw her voice like that, night after night? “I find it a little boring, the not-moving-your-mouth part,” she says. “I don’t respect that part of it as much as I should anymore.”

She wasn’t always so confident. When she first started on the comedy circuit in 2001, she did the same seven-minute act over and over again and paid a stooge to sit in the audience. Even now, she worries when she finds herself on a bill with more conventional comedians. Often she will start the show with the same joke she used in that seven-minute set: Monkey asks her where his microphone is and when she says she hasn’t got one for him, he says, “well, that messes up the illusion.”

“If I count how many times I’ve made that microphone joke, it must be in the tens of thousands. It’s safety. There’s a very, very uncool moment if I’m before a crowd who doesn’t know me and I take Monkey out of the bag. They’re thinking, ‘holy shit, is she going to talk to that teddy? This is going to be excruciating.’ So I always start with the apology,” she bursts out laughing. “I wouldn’t want to go on stage looking proud to be a ventriloquist.”

Conti has been a comedian and ventriloquist for 20 years now, which still seems to be a surprise to her. The daughter of actors Tom Conti and Kara Wilson, she grew up in London in a bohemian household where acting was revered and nights at the theatre were the norm. When she was five years old, her father starred in They’re Playing Our Song in the West End; she went to see it 21 times, sitting alone in a box, eating Maltesers. “I was,” she says, “in heaven up there.”

Encouraged to have a back-up plan, she studied philosophy at the University of East Anglia but, inevitably, acting was “too dazzling” to resist. Her father helped her to get an agent, but she didn’t get any of the parts she was put up for. “And I had a chip on my shoulder that I would be accused of nepotism. So that was problematic – going into acting, I was defensive. It wasn’t an open door.”

She found another agent and one of her earliest jobs was working with the experimental theatre director Ken Campbell on his 24-hour production of The Warp , which she loved, before becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000, which she hated.

“Wear that corset, stand like this in the background, listening to everybody else like you care – that was constraining beyond belief. Add on to that a sort of reverence – ‘This is your training. This is the RSC’ – the pomposity, and the hordes of tourists. I had to get out of there.”

So, she turned to puppets. Campbell, with whom she had a short but significant relationship when she was 26 years old and he was 60, told her she should try ventriloquism, an idea she initially wrote off as “bonkers”, until she gave it a go. “I went to his house and he said, ‘these are the letters you can’t say without moving your lips. Just replace six letters and off you go.’ That was the training.” It turned out she was a natural at relaxing her face, which is the key skill, apparently (“It’s not about keeping it still, that doesn’t work – the muscles are working too hard”).

At first, she practised with a classic dummy but she found him “lascivious and creepy. Every conversation I had with him, I came away feeling icky.” Then she remembered a monkey puppet that she had found in the house she shared with some fellow actors; she used to make people laugh having him hump things around the room.

“There was something about that face. I felt like, that face knows me, that face can access all the grubby recesses of my mind and will out me. That’s a projection onto what is just a pretty normal little monkey face but it really was like a vent, an outlet, where stuff came pouring out.”

Suddenly, Conti had a voice – even if it wasn’t coming out of her own mouth. Having spent most of her twenties waiting for the phone to ring, and for directors to tell her what to say, she could just get up and perform.

Nina Conti Credit: Matt Crockett Provided by peter@peterleonepr.co.uk

The comedy circuit was, back then, fairly male-dominated. “I saw these strong women like Jo Brand and Rhona Cameron but I wasn’t one of them. I was a girly girl, just a sap, really, a flirty, dressed-pretty dumbo. I’m being mean to myself, but I don’t really blame me, that’s what you were meant to be.”

Putting Monkey, a nakedly macho character, on her hand was a little like putting on armour, even if she did internalise some of the scene’s misogyny. “It felt like you’d better be tough or die out there. Monkey would call me a slag and a slut to get in with the guys in the audience. And I’d laugh it off in such a carefree way to demonstrate that I’m cool with everything because I am one! There’s truth in it.”

She wouldn’t do that now, would she? “I think I might. Because I secretly find it funny for some reason. If I unpick and worry about it too much, it’s a bit misogynistic. But it’s survival.”

Katherine Ryan: ‘I decided that night that I should be very frightened of men’

Like all the great comedy character creations, Monkey – rude, foul, priapic, unfiltered – gives voice to the part of Conti she might usually keep hidden in polite company.

“I was brought up to be nice and good. But when you’re saying all the things that aren’t allowed, people are relieved. And I was relieved – I don’t have to stand here saying, ‘this is who I am’. I don’t know who the hell I am. I’m somewhere between the two, or I’m nowhere. I like that mess because it’s better reflection of my own head than just knowing my voice and going out there and saying my thoughts.”

Her parents were a little bemused by her career choice at first – still are. “My dad sometimes tells me, ‘you’re a great actress, you should do more acting, you should be Nina in [Chekhov’s] The Seagull .’ I’m not doing The Seagull , Dad, I’m doing the monkey!”

Leaving the RSC to become a ventriloquist was, she admits, a form of rebellion – against her parents, and their hallowed craft. But it goes deeper than that. “Monkey is, in some ways, a weapon against my father,” she says suddenly. “He’s a version of me that can stand up to him. He’s not the gabbling, lefty worrier I am – he’s someone who knows his own voice. Solid.”

Her father was a Labour supporter but has become an enthusiastic Conservative, almost running as the Tory candidate in the 2008 London mayoral election. “I find his politics atrocious now, and I’m finding that really sad because I’m very close to him,” she says. “It feels like he’s gone to the other side. I can’t talk politics with him because he makes me nervous and I haven’t done my reading.” Does he know that she feels that way? “Yeah! But he’s beyond the pale, impenetrable.”

She is currently writing a memoir, which will excavate her “intense” relationship with her parents, among other things. Her co-writer, of course, is Monkey, a faithful filter through which she can explore and share her feelings. “You go to therapy to say everything in a safe space. I think of the stage and Monkey as a safe space. You can get stuff out and it takes the sting out of it.”

In lockdown, she and her partner Shenoah Allen, of the improv duo The Pajama Men, started a “filthy but wholesome” podcast, Richard and Greta , in which they play two extremely open pensioners sharing explicit relationship advice. They’ve done some live shows together, too. “It’s very interesting to work with another human being on stage,” she says. “Not to be up there with some audience member who I’m in control of, but a person who feels like a comedy machine, like a restless, rumbling power next to me. And it’s very healthy for me – I’m not the only one who can talk.”

She has two sons, Arthur, 17, and Drummond, 10, from her marriage to comedian Stan Stanley which ended a few years ago. Sometimes she says, she plays Monopoly with them and Monkey plays, too, “throwing his cash around, desperate to win”. He is, inescapably, one of the family.

In 2012, Conti made a film, Her Master’s Voice , in which she took the puppets Campbell had bequeathed to her in his will to Vent Haven in Kentucky, a resting place for the “bereaved” puppets of dead ventriloquists. Nominated for a Bafta, it is odd, funny and extraordinarily moving. Now, as her children get older she finds herself thinking about what will happen to Monkey when she dies.

“It’s a macabre thought, but you do wonder – what will Monkey mean to them when I’m gone? Will they hold him? Will it be too much? Or will they put him on and do his voice and will that be creepy?” she looks, briefly, haunted. “That’s a really weird thing to leave behind.”
