I booked the Unforgettable 8-Day Northern Lights Winter Package, including the premium package at the Blue Lagoon, Ice Caving, Lava Caving and snorkeling in Silfra. For my last day, I chose the free day in Reykjavik, although I additionally booked the Excellent 2.5 Hour Horse Riding Tour of the Volcanic Raudholar Countryside, which I highly recommend. Still, you should schedule some time to visit the beautiful city center of Reykjavik. In general, people in Iceland are kinder and more welcoming than anywhere else I have travelled so far. Also, I travelled alone, but never really felt that way, because everybody was so friendly and I met many great people on the tours. Iceland is also a very safe country for a woman to travel alone. My tour started with a three hour stay at the Blue Lagoon right after landing, which is really nice in order to relax after an exhausting flight. The milky blue, warm water, the masks and the sauna were exactly what I needed after the flight. At night, I had a Northern Lights Tour booked, which was rescheduled due to cloudy weather. The tour took place on another night, where I could actually enjoy the magical view of the northern lights. The rest of the tour basically consists of a few bus tours, that Guide to Iceland books for you with other companies. I had two two-day trips with Nice Travel where I explored the south coast and the west coast, a one day trip with Arctic Adventures, where I went snorkeling in Silfra and visited the Golden Circle, a Northern Lights Tour with David the Guide and an additional Horse Riding Tour with Sólhestar. During the tours, you get to see the beautiful landscape of Iceland, with some magnificent waterfalls, mountains covered in snow, cliffs, beaches including the stunning diamond beach, the beautiful glacier lagoon, an ice cave with clear blue ice situated in a glacier, a lava cave with a really funny guide, the vibrant underwater colours of the silfra fissure (which I recommend eventhough my dry suit was one of the few ones what did not stay dry in 4°C cold water) and lava fields. I also really enjoyed riding an icelandic horse through volcanic scenery - you don't need riding skills in order to participate. Throughout the tours, all the guides were really kind, informative, relaxed and most were also humorous. I learned a lot about Iceland, its history and myths, volcanoes and northern lights. I can only recommend this tour to everyone, who wants to enjoy the stunning landscape of Iceland. I honestly fell in love with the country and did not want to leave, after this tour. Thank you for the organisation of this great tour, I will most certainly return! :) Greetings Sarah

Ice caves in Iceland

Iceland is often hailed as a land of stark contrasts, where you can explore the ethereal beauty of a glacier ice cave.

Forged in fire and ice, Iceland is alive with primordial energy unlike anywhere else in the world. The geological and geothermal elements provide seductive sightseeing activities and visiting ice caves and ice tunnels is an activity which should not be overlooked while travelling in Iceland.

Iceland has many different caves, both well known and uncharted, but if you would like to visit a glacier ice cave, you are guaranteed an entirely one of a kind visit. Ice caves change from year to year, due to the movement of the glaciers and Iceland's ever-changing weather — and the unique character of each ice cave is an alluring call to adventure.

The incredible beauty to be admired inside the reaches of a glacier has a divine quality which, when combined with the geothermal power of Iceland, can make you feel like you are closer to earth’s beginnings.

11% of Iceland's landmass is covered with glaciers which means that an abundance of ice caves are found in the extremely thick glacial ice. These natural ice caves form when summer meltwater flows through the ice sheets, carving tunnels that can be explored during the colder months of winter.

Most often, all light is absorbed in these icy vacuums, rendering the caves in brilliant blue ice colours that are unparalleled anywhere else. Some caves also have what looks like black ice, where volcanic ash has landed on the caves. This natural occurrence is truly magnificent to witness.Ice caves in the region of Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier, were previously referred to as the Crystal Caves. The sheer size of these caves liken them to an icy citadel, its heavenly blues and enchanting coolness evoking a real sense of awe. You will want to take a camera, but nothing can prepare you for the subject.

Most day tours which involve visiting a glacier cave in Iceland involve taking a super jeep up onto the glacier. There you will be fitted with crampons (studs which fit over your boots) and be invited to take a short glacier hike (less than 5 minutes) into the cave.

Ice cave tours in Iceland can be taken at several places throughout the island. The best ice cave tours in Iceland take place at Vatnajokull glacier in Skaftafell National Park. Closer to Reykjavik, and extremely close to Vik, the ice caves in Myradsjokull glacier are popular among travellers. The meeting point for this day tour is at Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, from where you embark on the super jeep journey.

There are also tours of man-made ice tunnels which have been created in the Langjokull glacier. Some tours are available year-round and those in this area are ideal for those traversing the golden circle. Nearby Gullfoss waterfall is a popular stop on guided tours.

No-one should ever attempt going into an ice cave or tunnel without a guide, no matter how experienced they are, and with no end to guided ice cave tours, you have no reason to try.

Ice Cave Tours in Iceland

Ice Caves in Iceland is a popular tourist attraction.

  • 1.25K views
  • ~ mins read

There’s a reason Iceland is called ‘ice-land’. Glaciers of crystal blue ice blanket the country, slowly making their way over mountains and volcanoes as they finally crumble into a mirror-flat lagoon or the ocean. From afar, they are impressive bulks of indescribable dimensions. Up close, they define the meaning of ‘awe-inspiring’ as we humans try to grasp the sheer natural power of the ice. But the true beauty of glaciers can’t be appreciated without digging deeper. The natural ice caves carved out by these slow-moving giants are the crystalline hearts of the glaciers. To really get to grips with the beauty and power of a glacier, you need to take an Iceland ice cave tour on your next trip to Iceland .

Things to Know

Ice cave tours are only available during a short spell of the year, usually, from November to March. So, if you’re eager to explore the underbelly of a glacier in Iceland , make sure to book in advance, as many tours are fully booked before the start of the season. After March, the weather is warmer meaning caves are liable to collapse, as they move and reform each fall. Every winter, guides explore the glaciers for newly formed ice caves, meaning you can never step foot in the same ice cave twice! If you miss the window for ice cave tours, there are other similar options such as ice tunnels available during summer months. For safety reasons, it is imperative that you only head out onto a glacier and into an ice cave with a professional guide. Glaciers are constantly moving, closing and opening new crevasses which are easy to miss for the untrained eye. It is dangerous to traverse a glacier alone, so don’t take the risk. Equipment such as crampons will be provided, however be sure to wear warm clothing and suitable footwear even in the summer months.

3 Types of Ice Cave Tours in Iceland

1.  natural ice cave tours.

Iceland ice cave tours are a family friendly activity that will delight all ages. Vatnajokull glacier in the southeast of the country is possibly the most popular glacier for natural ice cave tours. It is the largest glacier in Europe, in a national park of the same name, and is accessible from Reykjavik. By car, travellers can take the Route 1 road along the south coast of the country. Be aware that driving times in winter are longer. Reaching Vatnajokull may take upwards of 5 hours from Reykjavik in winter months.

Ice cave tours can easily be done in a day trip where you meet your guides on site. For example, for a tour at Vatnajokull, you may meet at the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon or at  Skaftafell . You’ll then head out to the glacier in a 4x4 and you’ll have a short walk on the ice before entering the cave. Normally, these tours take approximately 2.5 hours where you’ll learn about the glacier and the formation of the ice caves while taking in the breathtaking beauty of these crystal structures.

2.  Man-Made Ice Cave Tours

Jokulsarlon cave

If you’re not visiting Iceland in the winter months, but still want to explore deep into a glacier — don’t despair! Ice cave tours are still available year round. The difference is, these caves or tunnels are generally man-made. While the twists and turns of these caves haven’t been carved out by the glacier itself, they are still large impressive structures that let you experience the inner workings of a glacier.

One of the most popular new man-made ice tunnels is located on Langjokull glacier  — Iceland’s second largest glacier after Vatnajokull. Langjokull is so named for its oblong shape, and is located in the southeast of the country and is approximately 4 hours from Reykjavik.

To reach the tunnel you will first ride on a huge 8 wheel truck that was once a NATO missile-launcher truck! This monster will take you on a 40 minute trip along the glacier to the mouth of the ice cave. Once just inside the entrance, you will be given crampons to aid your walking (though the floor of the cave is level) and any safety advice. The cave descends 30 meters down into the glacier and is approximately 500m long. You’ll learn a lot about the glacier and the formation of the ice. The walls of the cave allow you to chronologically track the story of the glacier, including when volcanic eruptions happened. Inside, you’ll get to explore the 5 beautifully crafted chambers that are lit up with colourful LED lights. For anyone feeling especially romantic, there’s even a wedding chapel where you can get married!

The Langjokull ice tunnel may not be a natural wonder, but it is still an exceptional way to explore the heart of an Icelandic glacier that’s available year-round.

 3.  Combination Tours

If you have limited time in Iceland and want to make the most of it, there are also combination tours that include ice caves. Ice cave and snowmobiling tours on Langjokull are available during November – April. A combination of  the ice tunnel tour with a helicopter ride and a super jeep tour are also available during July – December.

While there are many tours in Iceland that allow you to explore the ever-changing landscapes of glaciers, none are quite as up-close-and-personal as Iceland ice cave tours. Enter a frozen world of aquamarine ice that has been thousands of years in the making. If ice caves tours interests you then you cannot miss some of the amazing glacier tours in Iceland .

So, to make your trip to Iceland nice and easy, we want to share some essential tips, tricks and packing advice to visit Iceland’s most iconic ice caves.

After all, venturing into the ice caves in Iceland is something that needs proper preparation, safety precautions and expertise to do as safely as possible.

1.) Book the right ice cave tour in Iceland

Visiting Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, An Ice Cave Tour And Stokksnes In Iceland

As we all know, Iceland’s natural beauty is incredible to explore, experience and enjoy whilst visiting the country. That being said, the natural environment can be unpredictable and even dangerous if you don’t treat it with the respect it deserves.

Visiting Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, An Ice Cave Tour And Stokksnes In Iceland

Now, one of the best ways to book an ice cave tour in Iceland is to go with a reputable guide. We booked this ice cave tour in Iceland that handles all the nitty gritty details like liability insurance, qualified guides and safe equipment and expertise to get you into, and of course, out of the ice caves as safely as possible.

Visiting Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, An Ice Cave Tour And Stokksnes In Iceland

Our guide was so informative and attentive to our safety during our ice cave tour. Our guide was very particular about the safest walking routes and ensuring we used all the safety equipment correctly.

Not only that, the team were so friendly – which makes all the difference for a fun tour, doesn’t it?

2.) Preparing for your Ice Cave Tour

Visiting Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, An Ice Cave Tour And Stokksnes In Iceland

For your Iceland trip, generally, make sure to use a backpack that can be used to travel to Iceland, but also work really well for the expeditions and tours you do too.

For us, we always take a backpack so we can pack all our gear and layers for our Iceland trips. Plus, it’s got a handy stowaway harness and hip belt – which, in real terms and without any fancy jargon, means it’s totally versatile to wear as a backpack but also tuck in the straps to pop on the plane with Hand Luggage Only… See what I did there? Ha!

Osprey Sojourn Porter Backpacks-2

For years, we’ve used Osprey backpacks on our trips and the Osprey Sojourn Porter travel packs have been really useful for our Iceland adventures.

For us, the bigger the better for our backpacks and we now have the 65-litre Sojourn Porter travel pack . It’s always so helpful in carrying equipment with us for hand luggage on the flight over and it’s made from 100% recycled materials. That being said, you can easily go for the smaller (but no less mighty) 30 or 46-litre backpack , too.

These are great if you’re packing light. or using them for everyday hikes, expeditions or day-to-day use.

Osprey Sojourn Porter Backpacks-10

Now, the key thing that makes the Osprey Sojourn Porter travel packs epic for us is the AirScape back panel – let me explain. It’s so cool… literally. I absolutely hate heading out on a trip and ending up with a sweaty back from carrying my backpack around the airport or between destinations.

The nifty AirScape tech on the Osprey Sojourn Porter travel packs makes sure you’re cool and dry with vented back panels and ridged foam. It’s a godsend when on longer trips.

Oh, and let’s not forget the floating, exterior-access boot bin within the backpack itself. Now, stay with me, it might sound dull to some but this makes a massive difference when travelling.

You see, I love changing into ‘comfy’ shoes after an excursion and the boot bin keeps my muddy hiking boots totally separate from the rest of my gear. Plus, it’s got StraightJacket compression straps to reduce the size for storage after your trip.

It’s a win-win!

Oh, and don’t forget that Icelandic weather can be totally unpredictable. Pack layers and always have waterproof clothing available in case the rain falls.

3.) Ice cave safety precautions

As with every ice cave tour in Iceland, you want to make sure you follow every safety measure before you join the tour. Always have a good pair of hiking boots to wear on your ice cave tour.

We always go for a good waterproof pair, especially in icy conditions when meltwater can be an issue. As with the tour we booked (and other tour companies do the same), they will provide you with crampons (little spikes to dig into the ground or ice).

This means you won’t need to buy a pair of these.

As with the crampons, you’ll be provided with helmets with your tour operator but just make sure to take a snood or scarf with you. The wind chill factor can be intense, even on sunny days in Iceland.

Finally, gloves are key. Even in the summer months. Remember, you’re going to be hiking through the glaciers and it can be chilly.

4.) When to join an ice cave tour in Iceland

Nearly all ice cave tours in Iceland run exclusively in the summer months when the weather is milder. That being said, all ice cave tours in Iceland have the chance of cancellations at a moment’s notice.

I know it can be disappointing if your tour gets cancelled, but take this as a good sign that you’re with a reputable operator who’s looking out for your safety.

Always have a backup plan and try to avoid booking the ice cave tour on your last day in Iceland. This way, you can rearrange if it does get cancelled.

5.) Locations of the ice cave tour in Iceland

Typically, ice cave tours in Iceland happen wherever there is a glacier that has formed over thousands of years. As the glacier fringes melt, they open vast caverns and caves that can be explored with a qualified guide.

We joined a tour that took us to the Katla Ice Cave from the town of Vik. Though, you can easily join tours that take in the Vatnajökull Glacier (near Jökulsárlón), Skaftafell National Park or Langjökull Glacier.

6.) Going it alone?

This really shouldn’t be an option. Only head to the ice cave tours in Iceland if you’re going with a qualified guide. Glaciers are inherently dangerous places, especially at the fringes where they are beginning to melt.

Always book a tour, never go it alone. After all, no one likes a reckless explorer.
