Decision-Making

Creating a road map for your life, how to see where you're going—and how to get there.

Posted March 20, 2014

The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination. —Carl Rogers

You wouldn’t think about starting out on a trip without having some idea where you’re going and how to get there. There are specific directions you have to follow. These days, with detailed maps and GPS helping us navigate, that’s made all too easy. Of course, if you really don’t care where you’re going maybe it doesn’t really matter where you end up. And in that case, you can just get into your car, point it in any direction, and hope for the best. Who knows—you might just luck out.

I think you’re getting my point. Your life is a journey with lots of stops along the way and if you could have some idea what to expect, at least some of the time, you might feel a lot better about the whole thing. The image of the journey is so much a part of our language that I don’t think we even stop to think anymore about what we’re actually saying. There are crossroads, back roads, peak experiences, mountains to climb, valleys of despair, deserts and oases, wildernesses and wastelands, rivers to cross, forks in the road, detours, dead ends, and the open road. They’re all descriptive of places we’ve been. Wouldn’t it be nice to know beforehand what lies ahead in order to avoid an unpleasant, or difficult, or seemingly insurmountable obstacle on our path?

I find it nothing short of amazing that before we buy the car, or the computer, or any other sought after device, we consult with experts, friends, consumer reports to get all the information we will need to make an informed decision. Not always so when it comes to taking responsibility for ourselves and making healthy decisions for our own well-being and happiness .

What’s also amazing is that several years of our early education is spent learning multiplication tables and long division when, at the very least, some of that time could be spent learning necessary life skills such as how to be a responsible person, not only for our own good, but for that of society as well. Or decision-making . Many adults still find it hard to make basic and essential decisions for their life.

If what I’m suggesting is offensive to you or deemed to be a private matter and none of my business or that of anyone teaching our kids, then at the very least, let me suggest that we need to find the means to teach the lessons by reframing history or mythology, or any subject for that matter, in such a way that the stories that are told carry a deeper message. It’s not about learning the details and the facts but about understanding the underlying meaning.

For example, The Odyssey is not just about the travels and adventures of the Greek hero, Odysseus. It is a story about life unfolding, about transitions. It’s a great example of one huge rite of passage, or if you choose, several consecutive passage rites that encompass all of the adventures and tasks of the journey for the hero. But in actuality, the events are as dependent, if not more so, on the choices made by the people left behind, namely the women and the common folk, as on the actions of the heroes. Interestingly, the original poem was composed in the oral tradition and was originally more sung by a poet/singer than read.

I’ll assume that many of you have done a fair amount of reading in order to understand yourself better. Or maybe have spent some time writing or journaling in order to express feelings and make sense of what has happened to you. Now I want you to try something different. I want you to envision things, not in words but in images. Create a road map that shows the course of your life thus far. On a blank piece of paper create a map of your life complete with physical landmarks to depict places you’ve been. Include mountains, valleys, rivers, deserts, back roads, and detours. Make sure the paper is large enough to allow you to spread out. Notice directions and change of directions. How many of the directional changes were initiated by you and how many directional changes and course corrections were imposed upon you? Notice how often you returned to the same old places. Did you return due to habit or necessity? Were difficult passages overcome? Did fear or indecisiveness keep you from traveling too far from home base?

Your personal road map depicts your journey so far. It shows you where you’ve been and where you’ve come from to arrive at this moment. YOU ARE HERE.

The road map for the next leg of your journey starts HERE. Understanding the nature of change in the broadest sense (that there is a rhythm, a predictability about the way change unfolds) rather than from the narrower perspective of our own private experience, helps create a feeling of familiarity and a sense of some control. No more shock or surprise or chaos when change comes; you now have some idea about what to expect and perhaps, a better idea about what to do moving forward.

How to Make a Life Map

A life map is a visual representation of a person’s life. It can have anything that has meaning to the owner such as key life events, emotions, people, goals and dreams. Life maps are used to gain self-knowledge, set personal objectives or just for fun.

There is no one right way to design a life map. Each is as unique as the person to whom it belongs. But if you have never made a life map before, it is best to start without a clear plan in mind. Being too rigid about designing your life map will defeat its purpose, which is to help you know yourself better.

Life Mapping Exercise

1. Reflect on Your Life

Before you begin, take some time to reflect on your life. Consider your values, strengths, weaknesses, and past experiences. What are your passions? What are your long-term goals? Understanding these elements will form the foundation of your life map.

2. Set SMART Goals

Define your goals using the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This will ensure that your objectives are clear, realistic, and attainable.

3. Break Down Your Goals

Divide your long-term goals into smaller, more manageable milestones. This will make your objectives seem less daunting and help you maintain momentum as you work towards them.

4. Identify Potential Challenges

Consider potential obstacles you may encounter and brainstorm strategies to overcome them. By anticipating challenges, you’ll be better prepared to navigate them and stay on track.

5. Create a Visual Representation

Using the information you’ve gathered, create a visual representation of your life map. This can be done using various tools, such as mind maps, vision boards, or digital apps. Choose a format that resonates with you and allows you to easily update and modify your map as needed.

6. Review and Update

Regularly review your life map to track your progress, celebrate your achievements, and identify areas for improvement. Update your map as needed to reflect new goals or changing circumstances, ensuring it remains relevant and useful.

Using Life Maps to Set Goals in Your Life

Creative Life Mapping

Using life maps to set goals in your life.

For this method, grab a pen and a box of sticky notes. Take a deep breath and relax. Now turn your mind toward your life. Wait for thoughts to come to you. As they come, write each single word or phrase on a sticky note. Stick the note on a tabletop, a canvas or other large empty space. Keep writing as the ideas come. You might think of things such as college, money, marriage, your dream car, problems with family, the death of a pet, fears and worries, a vacation you’ve been wanting to take, hobbies – anything, really. Don’t censor any of it. Just keep writing until you get no more ideas.

Now look at these notes. Do you see a pattern? Are they mostly regrets, fears and bad experiences? Or are they goals, dreams and fantasies? Do they revolve around other people or just yourself? Do they all originate from a single, overriding emotion, belief or desire?

Arrange the sticky notes in a meaningful pattern. You might try grouping them into areas of life that make sense to you such as career, family, health and recreation. Or try making a timeline of events past, present and future.

Another way to arrange objects in your life map is in the form of a tree. Your name goes at the root or trunk of the tree, while items make the branches and fruit. It’s up to you. Give free rein to your imagination and creativity.

Working with Your Life Map

When finished with your basic life map, examine it. Do you like what it shows about you and your life? Is there anything you would like to take out of it or add to it? Why? What is most important to you in the life map? What makes you happiest? Who helps you realize the nicest things in your map? Do you see yourself realizing the dreams and aspirations shown in it?

If you are honest with yourself, the odds are you’ll see things in your life map that you aren’t pleased with. You may also notice things that you never thought were so important or influential in your life, yet figure prominently in the map.

Now make a new life map. Use a large blank sheet of paper, a large cardboard, the back of an old calendar or poster, or whatever you can find that’s big enough. This time, place only those elements that you want to be in it. Organize this new map the way you would like your life to be, not the way you see it is now (as shown in the first map). You will want it to be more structured and coherent than the other, free-flowing map. Still, be creative.

You might want to place your top priorities or favorite things at the top or center. Link related items together by drawing a line between them with a pencil (so you can erase it if you change your mind). Add details as the ideas come and connect them to existing elements in the map. For example, if one of your goals is to buy a house, you might add “pay off debt” and “make more money.”

Experiment with different layouts. Here are some ideas:

Life Map Examples

Pyramid: Your ultimate goal is at the apex; the steps toward that goal start at the base and work upward.

Timeline: You picture yourself attaining your goals through the years, one after another.

Five-pointed star: Your highest goal is at the middle point of the star, the foundations are the two lower points, and secondary goals are the two higher points.

Circle: Your life is cut into different segments, each its own goal.

Tree: The roots, trunk, branches and fruits symbolize the birth, growth and realization of your dreams.

This new map ought to show you not just what’s truly meaningful in your life and what you want to achieve; it can also help you discover ways to realize them. For example, if it’s your dream to become a published author, you may realize that some experiences you had can be turned into a book.

Keep organizing your new life map until you feel it accurately reflects your objectives. If you have the time and inclination, cut out pictures from magazines and newspapers and use those instead of sticky notes.

When you are happy with it, glue everything together on the blank sheet, cardboard or poster. Hang it somewhere or keep in a scrapbook. Look at it often to remind yourself of what you really want to do in this life. After a while, as goals and perspectives change, you will want to create a new version of the map accordingly. It’s important to keep it current and true to its owner. It is your life map, and yours only. Make it speak to you as a constant guide and inspiration.

Tips for Life Mapping

a. Be Honest with Yourself

When creating your life map, it’s crucial to be honest with yourself about your goals, strengths, and weaknesses. Acknowledge your limitations and don’t set unrealistic expectations. By being truthful, you’ll create a more accurate and achievable life map.

b. Embrace Flexibility

Life is unpredictable, and circumstances can change rapidly. Embrace flexibility and be willing to adapt your life map as needed. This will help you stay on track and remain resilient in the face of challenges.

c. Practice Patience

Achieving your goals takes time, effort, and persistence. Practice patience and remember that progress is often slow and gradual. Celebrate your small victories along the way and maintain a positive mindset.

d. Seek Support

Don’t be afraid to seek support from friends, family, or professional coaches. Sharing your goals and discussing your life map with others can provide valuable insights, encouragement, and accountability.

e. Prioritize Self-Care

While pursuing your goals, it’s essential to prioritize self-care. Ensure you maintain a healthy work-life balance, and make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. This will help you stay focused, energized, and motivated on your journey.

What is a life map?

life map

Life is full of twists and turns.

There are unexpected bumps along the road. Obstacles that you have to work around. And plenty of people you meet along the way that can help or hinder you.

Since life’s such a journey, doesn’t it makes sense to bring a map ?

If you’re wondering what a life mapping exercise is, you’ve come to the right place.

A life map is a visual diagram that represents a person’s past, present, and future.

It’s a graphic organizer that helps individuals reflect on key moments in their lives, set life goals, and plan for the future. This engaging diagramming tool is similar to a mind map diagram , but it focuses on an individual’s life story. And it can help you live your life to the fullest.

How to create life maps

You can use various tools and templates to help you get started.

It can be as simple as a piece of paper and some markers, or you can take advantage of digital tools like mind mapping software . Mindomo’s a great example of the latter. It features everything you need to create great life maps by yourself or with others. And when you’ve finished with one, you can save it, export it or share it.

But regardless of your chosen method, the goal is to create a visual representation of your life journey.

Discover key moments, priorities, and plans

The first step in creating a life map is to reflect on your past. Consider the key moments and events that have shaped who you are today. Start by listing these events in chronological order or time order. This record will help you understand the patterns and milestones that have influenced your life.

Next, think about your present situation. What are your current priorities, family dynamics, and overall happiness? Take the time to write down your thoughts and expectations for the present. This step is crucial for ensuring your life map accurately reflects your current situation.

Once that’s done, it’s time to look forward.

Consider your future and the life goals you want to achieve. Think about your career, personal relationships, and any other aspects of your life that are important to you. Write down these goals and expectations to help guide your life map’s future journey.

Building a better life with mind maps

A life map is also a versatile tool that can be adapted to suit different purposes.

For example, you can create a life map focused solely on your career or one that explores your personal relationships. This flexibility allows you to tailor the exercise to your unique needs and goals.

Moreover, life maps can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, allowing you to capitalize on your talents and address areas that need improvement. This self-awareness can lead to personal growth and increased self-confidence.

Another advantage of life mapping is that it can help you better manage your time and resources. By identifying your priorities and mapping out your goals, you can ensure that you allocate your time and energy effectively. This can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Life maps can also foster a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the journey you’ve taken so far. By reflecting on your achievements and the challenges you’ve overcome, you can develop a deeper appreciation for your life experiences. And you can get more out of the lessons you’ve learned along the way.

Moreover, life mapping can be a therapeutic exercise, helping you process past traumas or difficult experiences. There’s great value in visually exploring these events and understanding their impact on your life. Doing so will empower you to heal and move forward with a renewed sense of purpose.

How will you use a life mind map?

Creating a life map can also be a fun and creative way to express yourself. By using images, symbols, and colors, you can create a unique and visually appealing representation of your life’s journey. Vision Mapping (How to Create the Road Map to Your Dream Life)

Vision mapping is the process of creating a detailed mind map of the goals and dreams that you have for your life. Vision maps are a powerful tool that help you to create a personal vision and a detailed plan for your life. You can then use vision maps to help yourself stay accountable to your life vision.

What are Vision Maps?

It is important to note that vision mapping is not the same process as creating a vision board . A vision board is generally a collection of visual elements that doesn’t necessarily have a specific plan for just how you will reach your life goals.

On the other hand, a vision map is a very detailed plan that helps you set goals and lay out the specific steps you need to take to achieve them.

Vision maps clearly show where you are, where you want to be, and what specific steps you need to take to get there. They also highlight the challenges you expect to encounter, and the supports that you have to help you along the way.

Like vision boards, your personal vision map should also use visual elements to help paint a vivid picture of your vision.

How to Create Your Personal Vision Map

Begin with your vision for your life.

To get started with vision mapping, take a moment to think about your vision for your life.

Your personal vision map should begin with your destination in mind. What will it look like when you create the life you want to live ?

This can be a big and scary question that feels intimidating. You may be wondering if it is even possible to come up with a vision for your life. But don’t let those feelings discourage you from getting started.

Your goal is not to have to every single detail of your life figured out during the vision mapping process. Instead, just focus on your future self and what make the decisions you think are best for that version of you.

If you feel overwhelmed or confused, consider starting a vision mapping journal. Write down anything that inspires you in your journal. It may be an idea you have for a side hustle, a picture of what you envision your family life looking like, or anything else that helps you clearly see what you want your future to look like.

Before long, you will start to see connections between your ideas. This will help you understand your personal vision for your life.

Map out your pathways

The next step is to map out the different paths that will take you from where you are to where you want to be. Just like when you are taking a trip from one point to another, there are many possible routes that will take you to your destination.

The important thing is making sure that each pathway contains specific steps to help you move closer to your vision.

The best vision maps also highlight the obstacles and challenges you are likely to encounter along the way. This will ensure that you take the necessary steps to prepare yourself to overcome them successfully.

You should also include the key stakeholders that are going to help you along your journey. For example, specific family members and friends are two different stakeholders that you have in your life to help you when things get tough.

You may notice that you have different visions for different areas of your life, or that they all intertwine along different paths to form a single vision. That’s okay! There are no rules in vision mapping. This is your personal vision for your life!

Analyze your pathways

One of the greatest benefits of vision mapping is that it helps you visualize each different pathway toward your vision.

Having a clear visual of each possible pathway will help you make the best decisions that will take you to where you want to be.

A great analogy to understand this step is thinking about a cross town trip in a car. Having a good map allows you to plan the best route for your journey. For example, you could take the highway because it is faster and has less traffic than the downtown route.

Being able to take a closer look at each individual step and challenge along each different pathway will help you make more informed decisions about your life.

Look back at your progress often

Keep your vision map in a convenient place that you visit often. You should have simple access to it so that you can check in frequently – just as you would check a map often on a long road trip.

life journey road map

Remember that the goal isn’t to laminate your map and move on. Your vision of the future is always in motion, and life will throw unexpected curveballs at you all the time!

Sometimes these show up as opportunities, while other times they are setbacks. You should be able to count on your vision map as much as possible, but you don’t want to be so rigid that you turn away opportunities.

You may have to revisit and update your map if you find that life is calling you toward a direction you had not originally intended to pursue.

Vision mapping can be a scary experience because it involves stepping outside of your comfort zone ! Embrace this feeling and enjoy the excitement! When you do the hard work to plan and prepare, it won’t take long before your dream life becomes your reality!

Don’t forget to share this post with your friends and family members on social media! If you know someone who could use some help with the vision mapping process, this could be just the blog post that they need!

Guide to life maps

life journey road map

What is a life map?

A life map is a timeline that includes key moments from the past, helping you gain a broader perspective of the goals you're trying to achieve and your progress toward those goals. You can also use a life map to explore future plans, projections, and goals.

Life maps feature visual elements, such as photos, drawings, symbols, and icons. These visual elements provide additional context and make your life map easier to scan and understand.

As the name "life map" suggests, you can use these maps to explore your own personal life and goals, but you can also use them to explore the timeline of a company, project, or product. Life maps are powerful strategic planning tools that help you organize information and make better, more informed decisions.

When to use a life map

Life maps provide a framework for a chronological look at a company, project, or product. Analyzing a project's historical progress helps you see recurring issues, repeated themes, and other valuable insights. Common life map use cases include:

Goal setting

Use a life map to set team goals and track progress. When taking the time to plan and organize company goals, it helps you appropriately allocate team members to the right roles and tasks and ensures successful project completion. The life map format helps managers and individual contributors achieve goals while sticking to a timeline.

Showing company history

A life map is an ideal format for displaying a company's history. When starting with the company's founding date, companies can create a history life map that includes mergers and acquisitions, key executive hires, product launches, and other major milestones. Business leaders can use a life map to show their long-term success, reflect on growth, and plan for the future.

Project planning

Life maps are a useful strategic tool for project planning . Create a life map to display the timeline of a project from inception to completion. Add in sequential steps and (or) project milestones, along with any important dates. Project managers often use life maps to track their progress.

Mapping industry trends

You can create a life map to track industry trends to gain a better perspective on industry ebbs and flows. Pick an industry and a timeframe and make a life map with details about the state of the marketplace, key industry players, and notable events. Marketers and strategists often find patterns, cycles, and other insights when taking a chronological look at trends.

Benefits of life maps

Benefits of life maps

Life maps provide a broad look at a specific timeframe or project, often inspiring further inquiry and deeper exploration. Notable benefits of life maps include:

Outline growth

Life maps present a sequential layout of major events and milestones over the life of a company, project, or product. This zoomed-out view helps highlight long-term growth and advancement toward goals.

Help develop insights

When looking at a comprehensive overview of a project, it's easier to see patterns and draw conclusions. The timeline format makes life maps ideal for this type of strategic analysis. After you fill your life map with project details, you should spend some time reviewing it to see what insightful conclusions you can draw.

Seeing the entire picture

When deeply involved in a project, it's easy to get caught up in specific details and lose sight of the larger picture and overall goals. Life maps keep you on track, showing you a full look at the project—including tasks, milestones, and goals. With the complete picture, you can more effectively prioritize tasks and ensure all team members understand their roles.

Ensure all team members are on the same page with company goals

A life map can provide a practical roadmap for project workflows and progress toward company goals. You can use a life map to communicate expectations and standards, ensuring all team members are on the same page within a company or project.

How to create a life map

Follow these steps to create a life map:

  • Define your purpose. Choose a topic for your life map. It can be anything spanning across a timeframe, from a company's multi-year lifespan to the short-term duration of a project.
  • Plan the layout of the map. Pick a starting point for your life map. That could be the company's founding date, an important kickoff date, or another point at the beginning of your timeline.
  • Create a timeline. Start filling in the life map and adding important milestones and key events chronologically. You can start at the beginning and then work toward the present, or you can choose to begin with the present and work your way backward.
  • Consider your most essential goals. As you're building your life map, think about the highest priority goals for the company or the project. These goals likely influenced past events and will be important as you move forward.
  • Look at the future. With your top goals in mind, set short-term and long-term goals. You can add these to your life map as future points on the timeline.
  • Review your map. Spend time looking over the life map, adding additional details that come to mind, and making notes of trends and insights.
  • Update your map as needed. Life maps are dynamic tools. Refer to your life map for inspiration later on and add to it as you progress toward your goals.

Inspiring therapists and counselors to be more creative

September 14, 2012 by Carolyn Mehlomakulu

The Road of Your Life

This past week I have been on the road a lot, moving from California to Texas.  With this journey on my mind, I thought I would share about an art therapy intervention to represent one’s life like a road.

Draw the Road of Your Life

I usually give the client a prompt that goes something like this: “Imagine your life is like a journey along a road.  Draw a picture to represent what this road would look like. Think about the the important events that have happened so far and where you hope to be heading.”

This intervention can be used with children or adults. I have often used this intervention toward the beginning of treatment to help gather information about the client’s history and future goals, as well as to help the client put their current situation into context.  I have also used this activity recently with a child to aid in the transition to another therapist. After creating his road art piece, he was able to have a transition piece and timeline that he could use to fill in the new therapist on the major people and events in his life.

Here are some examples of art pieces about life as a road.  Please note that in order to protect confidentiality I never post actual client artwork.  The first two pieces are loosely based on themes and images I have seen in client artwork.  The third piece is based on my own life and transitions.

Have you tried this intervention with your own clients or for yourself?  Please share your thoughts, experiences, and comments!
