Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve: Everything you need to know

Erica Silverstein

Editor's Note

If you're looking for waterslides and zip lines, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is not the private island playground you've been seeking. But if a relaxing day of lounging in the sand and floating on the waves, perhaps with an hour or two of snorkeling or paddleboarding, is what the doctor ordered, MSC Cruises' newest destination might be your new favorite cruise port.

MSC Cruises transformed a former sand extraction site, surrounded by damaged reefs and full of industrial rubbish, into an idyllic beach destination that the line hopes will be the poster child for coral restoration. It planted thousands of plants and trees and created a coral nursery on the island's east side. MSC has partnered with the Bahamian government to designate the 64 square miles of waters around Ocean Cay as an official marine reserve.

Ocean Cay is technically two tiny islands connected by a footbridge. In the middle is a sheltered lagoon. Beachgoers can choose from numerous oceanside or lagoon-facing beaches, each with its own vibe. Bars and food trucks are scattered throughout the island, and visitors can book water-based tours or rent water sports equipment.

There's plenty of space for everyone but very little shade. Ships dock right at the island, so passengers can walk off the ship whenever they're ready for their time in the sun.

Note: Prices for activities and rentals can vary based on sail date and whether they're booked pre-cruise, on board or onshore.

Where is Ocean Cay?

cruises from miami to ocean cay

Ocean Cay is a manmade island in the Bahamas, about 20 miles south of Bimini and 65 miles southeast of Miami. It is closer to Florida than many other cruise line private islands and beaches, such as Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Cay or Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay .

The island's proximity to the Florida cruise ports means that MSC Cruises ships can stay in port late into the night and still make it back to the U.S. first thing in the morning.

Which cruise ships go there?

Only MSC Cruises ships visit Ocean Cay. Usually, they are the ships based year-round or seasonally in the U.S., sailing Bahamas and Caribbean cruises. Occasionally, another ship on a repositioning cruise might pay a visit.

Ships visiting Ocean Cay through 2025 include:

  • MSC Magnifica
  • MSC Meraviglia
  • MSC Seascape
  • MSC Seashore
  • MSC Seaside
  • MSC World America

Sister cruise line Explora Journey's Explora 1 will also make a few stops at Ocean Cay.

How do you get to and around Ocean Cay?

cruises from miami to ocean cay

Ships dock right at Ocean Cay's pier, so passengers can walk off the ship via the gangway instead of taking a tender boat. This makes it quicker and easier to go back and forth from the ship to the island.

Pathways take you from the pier, through the Ocean Cay Village (with its shops and bars), to the various beaches. From the pier to the farthest spot on the island is a 20-minute walk. An electric tram service also picks up passengers at designated stops (most with shaded seating areas) and takes them to the various beaches around the island. This way, you're not forced to walk if you can't or don't want to.

What are the MSC Ocean Cay beaches?

The main thing to do on Ocean Cay is to enjoy a relaxing day at the beach. Visitors can choose to spend time in the protected waters of the lagoon or on a beach that fronts the ocean. In one area, the lagoon's floor is covered in plant life, so you might not want to wade but rather swim over.

Sunset, Bimini and Paradise Sands beaches do not have lifeguards stationed along the beach like the other beaches do and are marked as such; however, lifeguards on jet skis do patrol the waters near these swimming areas.

Some beaches are more chill, while others have entertainment or water sports. All are close to food trucks offering complimentary burgers, hot dogs and fries, as well as bars. But if you want convenient access to the full lunch buffet, you'll want to hang out on South Beach near Seakers Food Court.

Floating beach mats and shade umbrellas are available for rent. It's cheaper to rent them in advance versus on the island. The current onboard price is $15 per umbrella rental or floating beach mat.

Pick them up at designated rental stations on the island (including the umbrellas, which you'll have to carry to the beach and set up yourself). Note that only South and North Beach have preset umbrella stands for placing your rental umbrella. Free umbrellas are already set up at Lighthouse Bay.

Ocean Cay's eight beaches include:

South Beach

The closer, longer lagoon-facing beach, with easy access to bars, food trucks and the main Seakers Food Court. If you've signed up for water sports, you'll find equipment such as standup paddleboards and kayaks at one end of South Beach.

North Beach

Across the lagoon from South Beach (and a farther walk/tram ride), this beach is a good bet for fewer crowds than South Beach or travel parties who want to easily switch from lagoon to ocean swimming.

Bimini Beach

Bimini Beach is on the ocean side of Ocean Cay's smaller island and one of the farthest spots from the ship.

Sunset Beach

Ocean Cay's longest beach (more than half a mile) faces the ocean. The farthest end of the beach is definitely a trek from the ship.

Paradise Sands

This tiny beach is between the Spa at Ocean Cay and the wedding pavilion.

Lighthouse Bay

Lighthouse Bay, with its colorful (and complimentary) beach umbrellas, sits between the ship and the island's iconic lighthouse. It's a happening spot with entertainment and activities throughout the day.

Ocean House Beach

This beach is exclusive to guests staying in the Yacht Club. It has its own restaurant and bar, as well as butler service and cabanas to rent for an additional fee.

Related: How MSC's private-island experience is different for cruisers in suites

Seakers Family Cove Beach

This small beach is still in the design process and has not yet opened. It's meant to be a shallow beach for families with young kids and is located close to food, bathrooms and the ship.

What are the best Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve things to do?

If you want more to do than swim, float or relax in a lounge chair, you have a few options on Ocean Cay. However, there aren't as many options as a tricked-out, theme-park-like private island like Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay.

cruises from miami to ocean cay

For a little exercise, the following rentals are available. Rentals are for one hour unless otherwise noted:

  • Snorkel equipment (all-day rental, $32)
  • Stand-up paddleboard ($32)
  • Kayak ($32)
  • Ceclo pedal boat ($122)
  • Windsurf board ($52)
  • Hobie sailing kayak ($75)
  • Hobie family kayak ($92)
  • Hobie Eclipse paddleboard ($49)

On my summer sailing, the snorkel equipment was already sold out when I went to reserve a set the day before we docked at Ocean Cay. If you plan on renting equipment rather than bringing your own, put a hold on a set as early as possible.

You can book massages at the on-island Spa at Ocean Cay, located on Paradise Sands Beach, past the far end of South Beach, where you can enjoy the sea breezes in a private treatment cabana. The wedding pavilion is also on this beach should you wish to tie the knot during your cruise.

The ship's entertainment staff organizes a few activities, including volleyball, bocce and kite competitions (marked as 18+). The youth staff organizes kid and teen activities, too, including treasure hunts and active games.

You can take a walk around the island, but you can't climb the lighthouse unless you book an official tour.

If you like to shop, Ocean Cay Village by the pier features several storefronts selling Bahamian and MSC/Ocean Cay-themed souvenirs and beach necessities.

A Discover Scuba diving center has been built but won't open until the cruise line has finished developing its diving program and tours.

You can also book a handful of excursions through the cruise ship (see below).

Ocean Cay is unusual in that it offers evening events, as the ship can stay late in port, given its proximity to the Florida cruise ports. A Junkanoo parade puts everyone in a party spirit and culminates in a laser light show on and around the lighthouse. On sailings that stay extra late, guests can live it up at the Luna Libre party on Lighthouse Beach, complete with a DJ, bonfire, dancing and limbo contests. Bars on this part of the island stay open late, as well.

What are the MSC Ocean Cay excursions?

cruises from miami to ocean cay

Want to engage in more organized fun? You can book a handful of tours for your day on Ocean Cay.

Tours include:

  • WaveRunner jet ski tour ($169 per jet ski — up to two guests)
  • Guided stand-up paddleboard tour ($49)
  • Guided kayak tour ($49)
  • Ocean Cay Lighthouse climb ($15)
  • Ocean Cay "Bahama Breeze Escape" 2-hour catamaran tour ($85)
  • Shipwreck snorkeling tour ($82)
  • Hobie catamaran sailing tour ($142)
  • Sunrise mimosa cruise ($85)

All of the tours are 1.5 to 2 hours in length, except the lighthouse climb, which is only 30 minutes. Depending on the MSC fare class you purchase, you may be eligible for discounts on tours if purchased online before your sailing. Prices for children are cheaper, except for the paddleboard tour (minimum age 14) and the jet ski tour (minimum age 10, but minimum age to drive is 18).

If your cruise ship stays late or overnight at Ocean Cay, you can book additional evening excursions. These include:

  • Glow nighttime stand-up paddleboard tour ($52)
  • Sunset Champagne cruise ($85)
  • Beachside stargazing ($89)
  • Twilight scenic island cruise and light show ($79)

These activities were not available on my summer cruise due to a combination of a later sunset and an earlier evening departure.

Does MSC Ocean Cay offer cabanas to rent?

Cabanas offer a shady hangout with a few extra perks. They're available on all beaches except Sunset Beach, Lighthouse Bay and Paradise Sands. Pricing and inclusions vary by cabana type.

cruises from miami to ocean cay

Ocean Cay Beach Cabana

Anyone can rent a cabana on North, South and Bimini Beach. The thatched roof huts are partially walled with a cushioned couch and wooden table inside and lounge chairs outside; they come with extra towels, cold water and two floating mats. Up to six people can occupy one cabana.

These cost $252 per cabana to rent on board, but pricing might differ if you book before your cruise or on the island.

Ocean View Yacht Club Cabana

Yacht Club guests can access cabanas on their exclusive beach, Ocean House Beach. An Ocean View Cabana also can accommodate up to six people. In addition to fresh water and towels, the rental price includes complimentary lunch and drinks, afternoon fruit skewers, four sets of snorkel equipment and four floating mats. These cabanas are on an elevated section of the beach, offering great views of the beach and waves.

These cost $402 per cabana to rent on board; the mats and snorkel gear are valued at $188.

Beachfront Yacht Club Cabana

For an extra $50, you can get a cabana on Ocean House Beach that's closer to the water than the Ocean View version but offers all the same amenities. These cost $452 per cabana to rent on board.

Is food included on Ocean Cay?

Lunch is included on Ocean Cay, though certain venues charge extra for special meals. The island's eateries include:

Seakers Food Court

Seakers Food Court is the main complimentary barbecue lunch buffet spot on Ocean Cay. It serves up a variety of premade salads, barbecue fare (burgers and veggie burgers, hot dogs, chicken, fish and more), plus simple desserts like cookies. Water and iced tea are complimentary. Picnic tables are set in the sand around the buffet, so you don't need to carry your meal back to your beach chair.

I was impressed with the variety of options, and everything was tasty. I had to ask for a veggie burger (they're not set out on the buffet), but it came out in minutes (versus on other lines' private islands where I've had to wait 10 minutes or more for my food).

Food trucks

If you don't want to trek far from the beach for your lunch, food trucks around the island serve complimentary burgers, hot dogs, pasta salad and French fries. It's a much more limited menu than the main food court, but sometimes convenience is key.

cruises from miami to ocean cay

Seafood Shack

The Great Star food truck near South Beach offers seafood specials for an additional charge. Choose from lobster grilled cheese, fried calamari, lobster bacon roll, grilled octopus salad, seafood ceviche and seafood watermelon salad for prices ranging from $7.95 to $12.95.

Ocean House Restaurant

Ocean House Restaurant is an indoor/outdoor dining venue and bar exclusive to Yacht Club guests; it's on their exclusive beach. The menu is fancier than the fare you'll find at Seakers Food Court, with starters such as crab ceviche and charred octopus; mains such as a lobster roll, pineapple club mahi mahi and a burger blending fresh angus chunk, short ribs and brisket; and desserts such as creme caramel and mango cheesecake.

The Smiling Fish Ice Cream Parlor

If you want a cool treat after a hot beach day, The Smiling Fish Ice Cream Parlor serves up cups, cone and its signature ice cream dish — ice cream in a fish-shaped cone. Flavors include vanilla, chocolate, coconut and key lime, and you can order toppings like M&Ms, fresh mango and Nutella sauce. Be prepared for sticker shock: A cup costs $4-$6, a waffle cone $7 and a smiling fish cone $9.

Does my MSC drink package work on Ocean Cay?

cruises from miami to ocean cay

Ocean Cay has 10 bars (plus the Smiling Fish coffee bar) spread across the island, and whatever drink or all-inclusive package you have on board will apply to the island. Otherwise, you will need to swipe your cruise card to pay for drinks.

Most of the bars are thatched-roof, open-air huts with bar seating; there are conversation nooks in the sand with four chairs around a small table and even some bean bags for reclining with your beverage.

Is there shopping on Ocean Cay?

Ocean Cay Village has several shops selling souvenirs and beach necessities. Even better, they are blissfully air-conditioned, should you need a respite on your walk from the sand to the ship.

The Ocean Cay Trading Post sells Ocean Cay branded souvenirs and gifts inspired by nature. The MSC Shop and Ocean Cay Visitor Center are the spots to pick up essentials like sunscreen and beach toys; the MSC Shop also sells items from the MSC Foundation, highlighting sustainability and marine themes. The Bahamas Shop sells locally made Bahamian products.

An artisan market was closed during my visit; when it is open, it only accepts U.S. dollars for payment.

What additional Ocean Cay amenities will I find?

The rental stations doling out umbrellas and floating mats are the same buildings where you can find restrooms, changing rooms and showers. Beach wheelchairs are available for passengers with mobility issues; these can also be found by the bathrooms.

Ocean Cay is wired for Wi-Fi, so your onboard internet package will work on the island. Just connect your phone or device to Ocean Cay Wi-Fi and sign in as you would on board.

Can you stay overnight on Ocean Cay?

cruises from miami to ocean cay

You can't stay overnight on Ocean Cay — but your ship might. Though MSC cruise ships stay at Ocean Cay into the evening and sometimes remain docked overnight for a two-day visit, there are no accommodations for guests on the island.

If you want the late-night experience, look for sailings that either arrive in the afternoon and depart the evening of the following day or arrive in the morning and stay for two full days. Don't think you can camp out on the sand. For these overnight stays, passengers still need to be back on board around midnight or 1 a.m.

What's the typical weather like on Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve?

Like the rest of the Bahamas, Ocean Cay has warm weather year-round. Summer highs are in the 80s, and winter lows are around 70 degrees. May and June are the rainiest months, with hurricane season running from June through November. Should a storm threaten Ocean Cay, your cruise ship will reroute and skip a visit to the island until weather conditions improve.

I've found the sun very intense in the Bahamas, and there's not a ton of natural shade on Ocean Cay. Be sure to apply and reapply sunscreen liberally if you plan to spend all day at the beach to avoid sunburns.

12+ Ocean Cay Tips & Things to Know (MSC Private Island)

Sitting just 65 miles off the coast of Miami in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay (pronounced Ocean “Key”) is the newest gem in the lineup of private islands run by major cruise lines.

Ocean Cay is the pride of MSC Cruises, which calls on the island for extended visits from ports in Florida, including Miami and Tampa.

Welcome sign on Ocean Cay

So what’s so special about the island? Put simply, it’s a paradise for cruise passengers. Transformed from a former industrial sand excavation site, MSC put roughly $300 million into renovating the spot to become a must-see spot.

While there is still work to be done, passengers can enjoy white-sand beaches, plenty of space to lounge, and electric blue waters. In short, if you’re taking a cruise because you want sun, beach, and sand, then Ocean Cay is exactly what you’re looking for.

During our recent visit we spent hours exploring and enjoying the island to give you some ideas on what to expect, but also tips on visiting to make your stay even more enjoyable.

Your Visits Last Well Into the Evening

Lighthouse show on Ocean Cay

With the location of Ocean Cay just 65 miles from Miami, that gives it a unique advantage over most other cruise ports. The ship can make it back home to port in just a few hours. This allows MSC to offer extended stays at the island that last well into the night.

For instance, you might arrive and be able to go into port at 10 a.m. and not have to be back on the ship until 10:30 p.m. This gives you the chance to enjoy the entire island all day and even well into the evening.

That’s a rarity among most cruise ports, where you often have to be back on the ship by 4 or 5 o’clock in the afternoon.

As well, the cruise line puts on a spectacular lighthouse show (shown above) each night that you don’t want to miss.

Your Drink Package Works on the Island

Bar on Ocean Cay

Just like other cruise lines, MSC offers a full lineup of drink packages. With these deals you pay a set amount ahead of time and then get your fill of drinks without having to worry about the bill at the end of the trip.

Typically drink packages don’t work in port. However, since Ocean Cay is operated by MSC, they allow you to use your drink package on the island just like you would on the ship.

Ocean Cay has bars dotted all around the island, so you are never far from an opportunity to use the drink package. Take advantage of this perk to save some money on drinking in the port.

Wi-Fi Also Extends to the Island

Years ago, Internet on a cruise ship was a luxury. These days it’s seemingly a necessity. Luckily for cruise passengers, you don’t have to go without online access just because you are in port.

When you get an Internet package while sailing, that package extends to Ocean Cay, and you can use it just like on the ship. So whether you are checking e-mail or posting that pic to Instagram, you can do it from the beach on the island.

Bring Your Towel From the Ship

When you go to the beach, don’t forget to bring your towel. You’ll have a big orange beach towel in your cabin when you arrive on the ship (if not, head to the towel station by the pool). This is meant for you to bring to shore on Ocean Cay.

Remember to keep this towel with you and bring it back with you when you come back from the beach. There’s a $20 charge for towels that aren’t returned at the end of the cruise.

South Beach Can Get Crowded

Crowded South Beach on MSC's Ocean Cay

The closest beach to the cruise ship is Lighthouse Bay. It sits right at the front of the ship, giving you views of the lighthouse and the ship.

But the most popular beach in our experience is South Beach. As you walk off the ship, it’s a straight shot through the “village” area and past the Seakers buffet.

During the mornings the area is relatively uncrowded but more people come as the day goes on. By the early afternoon, it can be a packed beach.

Even With Crowds, There’s Still Plenty of Space

Beach on the west side of Ocean Cay

We mentioned a crowded South Beach, but don’t let that scare you off. Truth is that Ocean Cay is huge, with multiple beaches. That means there is plenty of space, no matter which beach you want to go to. Even if you walk down a little you can find open space on South Beach.

What’s especially nice is that many beaches are so large that MSC has spaced out the beach loungers. So instead of having lounger after lounger next to each other, they are staggered in many spots (not all) to give everyone breathing space.

Take Advantage of the Lagoon

Beach on Ocean Cay

Wonder why South Beach is so popular with passengers? Not only is it a straight shot from the ship, but it also sits on a “lagoon” that features calm water, no matter what the open ocean is doing.

Ocean Cay is actually made of two islands, with a small outer island wrapping around South Beach to protect it. The result is that the large body of water between the two is always calm.

During our visit the wind was whipping at the edges of the island, which caused rough surf. But this lagoon formed between the two islands was as calm as a pond with gorgeous blue water.

Chairs Are Free, Umbrellas Are Not

One of the few disappointments on Ocean Cay is there is a lack of shade. Of course the beach is bright and sunny, with thousands of loungers laid out, free for anyone to use. Just pick one you like and claim it.

In between every pair of loungers is an umbrella stand, but they don’t have umbrellas. To get one you have to rent it ($12.99 during our cruise). Given the power of the sun in the Bahamas we don’t like that you can’t get some access to shade while on the beach without having to pay for it. Still, it’s a small price to pay to avoid looking like a lobster at the end of the day.

Use the Free Tram to Get Around the Island

Let’s make one thing clear — for a private island, Ocean Cay is large. We’ve been to other islands run by cruise lines and while the island itself may be large, the area reserved for passenger use is relatively small. That’s not the case on Ocean Cay.

We’d estimate it would take about 30 minutes to walk the entire island, and that’s at a good pace. At the end of the day we were exhausted from exploring every inch of the cay.

Instead, use the free tram that runs constantly to points around the island. These tractors pulling carts can save you a lot of time and energy when getting from point to point.

Each Bar Has a Water Station

Smart cruise passengers know to stay hydrated. Without realizing it, you can quickly get dehydrated when laying out in the hot sun or even swimming in the water.

While plastic bottles are discouraged on Ocean Cay for environmental reasons, each bar has a water station that you can use to fill up your reusable bottle or glass. They are located on the backside of each bar. Just walk up and fill up. There are also water fountains at each restroom if you need a drink.

Two Spots Offer Great Pictures

View of cruise ship from Lighthouse Bay

Want to get a snapshot to remember your trip to the island? We recommend two different spots to get a great shot.

First, if you want a picture of you and the ship, head over to Lighthouse Bay. This beachy spot puts you in a great spot with the front of the cruise ship surrounded by sand and blue water. There are also lots of brightly colored umbrellas and beach chairs that add to the atmosphere.

The second spot we recommend is the bridge that connects the two islands that make up Ocean Cay. This spot gives you a perfect backdrop of the lagoon with electric blue water while you can pose against the bridge railing.

Use the Beach Shack to Eat Without the Lines

Right now there are two different spots to get something to eat on the island. The first is Seakers, which is a huge buffet with tons of seating. It’s the main spot that the majority of people seem to eat.

The only issue is that around lunchtime the lines can get long. Instead, we recommend trying the Beach Shack.

There are multiple Beach Shacks dotted around the island, so no matter where you are, there’s one that’s close by. They serve burgers (including veggie burgers) and dogs, similar to the buffet. But with so many around the island, the lines are short, even at lunchtime when it can take some waiting to eat at the main buffet.

If you’re hungry and don’t like waiting, take advantage.

The Ship’s Casino Is Open in Port

Do you love to play in the casino while on a cruise? If so then you might know that casinos are normally open only when the cruise ship is out at sea. When you are in port, it’s closed.

That’s not the case on Ocean Cay. During our visit we noticed that the casino was open all day while docked in port. Of course, it was pretty quiet during the day, but picked up in the evening as more people made their way back onto the ship.

Ocean Cay Is Still a Work in Progress

Ocean Cay view of the island

While there is a lot to love about Ocean Cay, don’t expect it to be a perfect tropical paradise just yet. The beaches and water are unmatched, but many parts of the island is still a work in progress.

For instance, we had a construction yard in the middle of the island. Meanwhile, MSC is planting 75,000 trees and plants around the island and many of them are freshly done. This makes the island look somewhat barren and there are large stretches of sand that are dotted with new palm trees.

In the coming years it is obvious that the island will be a lush space with lots of greenery and shady palms. For right now, it still has some growing to do.

Ocean Cay Bahamas (MSC Marine Reserve)

Last updated on February 3rd, 2024 at 12:32 pm

Escape to the private paradise of Ocean Cay, an exclusive marine reserve developed by MSC Cruises. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this eco-friendly island, surrounded by pristine turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs. Relax on white sandy beaches, snorkel with tropical fish, or enjoy water sports such as paddleboarding and kayaking. Ocean Cay offers a tranquil and sustainable retreat for nature lovers.

The temperatures at Ocean Cay average between 80°F and 90°F. Summer and early fall are the hottest months and the highest humidity. Winter still has highs of 80°F, but evenings are cooler and it is the driest time of the year.

Think of Ocean Cay as an extension of the ship. You pay for non-inclusive items with your MSC card. The one exception is the Bahamian market, and that is U.S. cash only.

Wireless Internet:

The wireless Internet from the ship extends to the island. You will, however, need to sign off the ship’s service and onto the island’s service.

Both Bahamian Creole and English.

Where You Dock in Ocean Cay Bahamas (MSC Marine Reserve)

There is one pier at Ocean Cay for the exclusive use of MSC. This pier can accommodate their largest cruise ships. The pier allows passengers to walk right off and not have to wait for a tender. You will not need your passport to visit the island, just your room keycard.

Click here for an interactive map of the island.

Good To Know: Bring beach towels from your cabin, both to and from, with you if you plan on heading to the beach. If you are a MSC Yacht Club guest, towels will be provided to you.

MSC asks that if you intend to go into the water, you use coral reef-safe sunscreen (which you can buy on the island).

Striving to be eco-friendly, there are no paper maps of the island so as to cut down on waste. There are also no plastic water bottles on the island, so if you want a container for the day bring one with you.

Getting Around Ocean Cay Bahamas (MSC Marine Reserve)

There are no cars, buses, or taxis on Ocean Cay.

The island is large to traverse on foot, but it is possible. The closest beach is a 10 minute walk from the ship. The furthest point from the ship on the island is about a 20 minute walk.

The island has a free tram service to get from the pier to the beaches. There are golf carts on the island, but those are used exclusively by staff.

Shopping In Ocean Cay Bahamas (MSC Marine Reserve)

There are four shopping areas on the island where you will find essentials and souvenirs.

The Bahamian Shop & Market has authentic arts and crafts.

Ocean Cay Trading Post will find a selection of souvenirs and gifts including T-shirts, caps, beach items and accessories.

The MSC Logo Shop will provide you with essentials and souvenirs. This shop is also where you will find MSC Foundation items.

Dining In Ocean Cay Bahamas (MSC Marine Reserve)

Sneakers Food Court

This stop is included in your cruise ticket and is the main dining area on the island. They have American favorites and Bahamian flavors, along with dining options for the kiddos.

  Food Trucks

There are food trucks located at various spots on the island. Their menus are limited to burgers, hot dogs, fries, pasta salads and brownies. There are also seafood food trucks that offer, at an additional cost, lobster bacon rolls, lobster grilled cheese and fried calamari.

There are numerous beach bars all across the island where you can get something to drink. They have a wide range of beverage options.

Lighthouse Bar

You can’t miss the 100 foot red and white lighthouse on the island. You will be able to enjoy drinks along with live music.

Springers Bar

Located in the marina, this is an authentic Bahamian bar offering cocktails and other drinks.

The Smiling Fish and Coffee Bar

One of the most fun places on the island, you will find hundreds of different kinds of ice cream. They also offer freshly brewed whole bean and ground coffee, espresso and cappuccino.

Things To Do in Ocean Cay Bahamas (MSC Marine Reserve)

The sand and the surf are the main draws at Ocean Cay. It is a chance to soak in the beautiful sights of beaches and water.

There are no pools on Ocean Cay, but there are seven beach areas with over two miles of white sandy beach shore. Lifeguards are on duty in most of these areas.

  • Bimini Beach
  • North Beach
  • South Beach
  • Lighthouse Bay
  • Paradise Sands Beach
  • Sunset Beach
  • Ocean House Beach

Bimini beach has a beautiful view of the Bahamian Sea and has calm waters.

North and South beaches are the best for families. These areas are shallow and the waters tend to be calm. There are some palm trees, but not many. Umbrellas are available to rent.

Lighthouse Bay gives you great views of the lighthouse, pristine white sands and places to lounge near the water. This beach is the closest to the ship, and so tends to be the busiest.

Paradise Sands Beach is located next to the Ocean Cay spa where you can get a massage or facial treatment.

Sunset Beach is the longest beach on the island, but there are no lifeguards. There are a variety of water sports available here

Ocean House Beach is reserved for MSC Yacht Club guests. Here you will be able to rent a beachfront or ocean view cabana for the day.

Even though the beaches at Ocean Cay are the biggest draw, and there are other water related sports that you can take part in.

There are wave runner excursions, and a guided kayak or paddleboard trip. Snorkeling is a favorite activity too.

There is also a spa on Ocean Cay on the far side of the island that offers massages and facials.

Paddleboard tour

This activity allows you to see the natural habitat around Ocean Cay with a guided tour. Equipment is provided and both beginners and experienced paddle boarders will appreciate this tour.

Glow Nightime Stand Up Paddle Boarding

This specially equipped stand-up paddle board is fitted with LED lights that let you glide, illuminated, across the calm waters of Ocean Bay Lagoon.

Kayak Explorer Tour

This guided tour takes in the exquisite views of Ocean Cay’s coastline and marine life.

Beachside Stargazing

A guide will use state of the art computerized tracking telescopes to find star clusters, planets, nebulas and galaxies in the Bahamian sky.

Ocean Cay Bahama Bank Escape

A spacious double decker power catamaran will take you on a boat ride around Ocean Cay. It will then anchor in the shallow waters of the Bahama Banks while you enjoy drinks and music.

Twilight Scenic Island Cruise & Light Show

Take a twilight cruise around the Cay on a double decker catamaran. You will also be treated to the Ocean Cay Lighthouse Lightshow from the water before returning to the island.

Shipwreck Snorkeling Getaway

You will be taken by boat to one of the best snorkeling sites. All of your equipment and instructions are provided. Explore on your own or follow your snorkel guide.

Sunrise and/or Sunset Cruise

Catch the sun as it rises on a private double dicker catamaran with complimentary mimosas. The sunset cruise will provide complimentary champagne while you view the spectacular Bahamian sunset.

From ultra-luxury to megaships, a look at all the ways to cruise in 2024

If you're new to cruising or have only been on a couple of caribbean adventures, you may not realize how many different types of cruises and ships there are, by kris anderson • published march 24, 2024 • updated on march 24, 2024 at 7:22 am.

If you live in South Florida you've no doubt seen cruise ships docked or out on the open seas, heading to or coming from somewhere nearby or far away.

And if you're new to cruising or have only been on a couple of Caribbean adventures, you may not realize how many different types of cruises and ships there are.

From huge ships like the Icon of the Seas that can hold up to 7,600 passengers to smaller luxury vessesl with fewer than 100 passengers on board, and from heading up and down Florida's coast to across the world, the types of ships and destinations are nearly limitless.

When many think of cruising, they might picture big beautiful ships that are resorts at sea, with thousands of passengers on board enjoying the food, drinks and entertainment.

Get South Florida local news, weather forecasts and entertainment stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC South Florida newsletters.

"For a lot of people that megaship experience is really what they’re looking for. This is the big cruise ships, you see them all the time out of South Florida," said Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief of the Cruise Critic website.

From Carnival to Norwegian, MSC, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Disney, Celebrity, Holland America, Virgin and more, all of the major cruise lines are right in South Florida's backyard.

Diddy's alleged drug ‘mule' arrested for cocaine possession at Opa-locka Airport

Ken Muscat, the managing director of Scenic Group and someone who's worked in the cruise industry for 30 years, said that means more options for cruisers.

"I think that's one of the greatest things about the cruise industry. It's so diverse and there really is something for everybody," Muscat said.

Muscat said the bigger ships may have more appeal for a wider range of travelers.

"I think the big ships are catered best towards multigenerational travel," Muscat said. "You've got families, you've got the grandparents that are coming along from both sets of parents, you've got the young kids and these big ships offer so many different alternatives for everybody."

He also said the smaller ships have something to offer as well.

"Now, we're also seeing this trend of smaller ships and new brands that are coming into the industry that are offering these ultra luxury or very premium kind of products," Muscat said.

McDaniel agreed.

"They are very inclusive. The service is top notch, and the dining is excellent," she said. "These small ships can take you to more remote places around the world, smaller ports. So you’re going to see different places than you might see with some of these megaships."

Smaller ships might provide a sunset sailing into St. Barts or a stroll in the sand on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands.

Companies like Scenic, Regent Seven Seas, Emerald, Ritz Carlton, Silversea and Explora Journeys offer these five-star sailings out of South Florida and other ports in the Caribbean, just a short plane ride away.

If you're up for a longer plane ride, you can venture on board a river cruise to explore the winding waterways of Asia and Europe.

"The food is wonderful, the wine is flowing. But every day you're in these small little ports," said Michelle Fee, CEO of Cruise Planners. "And you get to experience that by stepping off the ship and you're right in the little, quaint town."

And since there are two international airports in South Florida, there's another cool cruising option: expedition cruises.

These are bucket list trips with exotic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations.

"They typically will do longer cruises, world cruises, or visit places all over the Med[Mediterranean], Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galapagos, very exotic ports of call," Muscat said.

With more and more companies offering expedition excursions, these remote destinations are more accessible than ever before.

"I’m a firm believer that there is a cruise and a cruise ship for every single person on the planet," McDaniel said.

The Nieuw Amsterdam’s homeport is Fort Lauderdale and it departed on March 16 on a 7-night voyage. Holland America Line reported offering counseling services to “team members.”

Holland America Line stated the team is “deeply saddened” and the “safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority.”

Meanwhile, two firefighters suffered smoke inhalation after a fire aboard the Carnival Freedom cruise ship during a voyage to Freeport. The ship is based out of Port Canaveral.

The Carnival Freedom cruise ship experienced its second fire in less than two years, and passenger footage caught the flames with smoke coming from the ship's exhaust funnel Saturday afternoon.

"That's nutty," X user @breezebreeze_ can be heard while showing the fire aboard the ship.

Carnival Cruise Line put out several tweet replies regarding the incident they say happened at 3:15 ET.

"Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel," one of the posts read. "The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to Princess Cay due to weather."

The news prompted passengers of the ship's upcoming departure from Port Canaveral on Monday to ask the cruise line if their itinerary would go off as planned.

"Is the cruise for the Carnival Freedom March 25 departing cruise from Port Canaveral still planning on going?" one X user asked Carnival. "We need to know for travel purposes!"

"I can almost guarantee it'll be canceled," another X user wrote about the ship's next planned cruise. "This isn't the first time this has happened ironically to this ship, and the following sailing when it happened that time were canceled, but obviously not confirm[ed]."

Carnival quickly responded to quell any rumors, saying it does not expect any impact on the next Carnival Freedom voyage.

The Freedom's exhaust funnel caught fire in May 2022 while the ship was docked at Grand Turk Island in Turks and Caicos. Video from then also showed the ship’s funnel – referred to by some as the whale tail – consumed by flames and smoke.

The part of the ship that caught fire is designed to help direct the flow of exhaust gases away from the ship, according to the Crown Cruise Vacations website.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," Carnival said about Saturday's fire. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated."

Carnival said the captain made "multiple announcements to guests and crew" about the fire. The port side of the funnel fell onto Deck 10, Carnival said. No injuries were reported.

The Carnival Freedom was in Freeport as scheduled Sunday, according to CruiseMapper. Carnival said there are no operational issues with the ship’s systems.

2 crew members die on Holland America ship; fire breaks out on Carnival cruise

MIAMI — Two crew members died on board a Holland America cruise ship, and a fire broke out on a Carnival ship while both of the ships were in the Bahamas this weekend, officials said.

The two crew on the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam died Friday during an "accidental steam release" while it was calling at the private resort island Half Moon Cay, Holland America said in a statement on Sunday.

"There was an accidental steam release in an engineering space on board Nieuw Amsterdam, which sadly resulted in the death of two crew members," the cruise line said.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Dutch Safety Board were investigating the exact cause of the release, Holland America said.

A representative of the Bahama’s Coroner’s Court did not immediately respond to a request for information, such as the crew members’ identities and the cause and manner of death.

The cruise line said the conclusions of any investigation would be taken seriously. "Safety is always our top priority, and we are working to understand what, if anything, can be learned from this tragic accident," it said.

Passenger Laine Doss said she was on board when the captain announced the deaths on the vessel's P.A. system.

"We were celebrating the last day of the cruise," she said, when the mood changed "to something extremely somber."

The captain's voice broke, she said.

"He broke down crying," Doss said. "There was a moment of silence that the captain requested. And that entire scenario did affect the entire cruise. Things were canceled, joyous events were canceled, and we really just thought about mortality — the people who perished on the ship."

Crew members were being offered counseling, Holland America said.

Dutch government inspectors determined the vessel to be "fully operable," and this was "confirmed" by the U.S. Coast Guard, the cruise line said.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said she was looking into the statement and was unable to immediately confirm it.

The Nieuw Amsterdam returned Saturday to its home port of Fort Lauderdale, guests disembarked, and the vessel has embarked on a cruise with a stop in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Monday, Holland America said.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this event," the cruise line said. "We’ve been in contact with the families of both team members and are offering our support to them and to all of our crew at this difficult time."

The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.

Fire on the port-side exhaust funnel of another Florida-based cruise ship in the Bahamas, the Carnival Freedom, rocked some passengers Saturday and took the ship out of commission for repairs, the cruise line said.

No injuries were reported.

In a statement Sunday, Carnival Cruises acknowledged witness reports of a lightning strike or the sound of thunder before the fire erupted.

Passenger Heath Barnes said the ship was on a detoured path, destined for an unscheduled stop in Freeport, as a result of stormy weather and high winds when fire started.

"I was shocked," he said. "I mean, I looked out there and you're not supposed to see black smoke and fire shooting out of the tail end of the cruise."

The blaze was preceded by "the loudest thunder-lightning clap that I've ever heard in my life," Barnes said.

Ship personnel extinguished the fire, Carnival Cruises said.

The cruise line said a technical team determined the ship sustained enough damage that it will need repairs before it can be returned to scheduled cruises. The funnel was stabilized, passengers were expected to be returned to Port Canaveral, and the ship will set off to Freeport for repairs, it said.

"The damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Carnival Cruises said.

Passengers scheduled for those late-March cruises are being offered full refunds and credit that can be used for a future cruise, it said.

It was the second funnel fire on the Carnival Freedom since 2022.
