15 Best Things to Do in North Chicago (IL)

The second most populous city in Lake County is right on the lakeshore, south of Waukegan , and is known for its military heritage.

North Chicago is home to the sprawling Naval Station Great Lakes, which today serves as the United States Navy’s only boot camp.

One reason for civilians to head onto the base is for the excellent museum, dedicated to the life and service of sailors in the United States Navy.

The city has a great location, a stone’s throw from big attractions like Six Flags Great America, as well as numerous beaches on Lake Michigan.

One option just ten minutes away is the ecologically crucial Illinois Beach State Park, while the Metra system and the Robert McClory Bike Path offer useful alternatives to cars.

1. National Museum of the American Sailor

The museum at Naval Station Great Lakes is one of ten around the country operated by the Naval History and Heritage Command.

In particular, the National Museum of the American Sailor aims to capture the entire history and experience of the sailor in the United States Navy.

This is done with the help of more than 40,000 artifacts and records. The museum holds an impressive collection of uniforms and accessories, from 1900 to the present, and has a wealth of items and photographs relating to boot camp.

2. Six Flags Great America

Fans of white-knuckle rides will have no lack of choices, with high-profile rides unveiled almost every season. When we wrote this list a recent arrival was The Joker, a free-spin steel coaster, in which you’ll flip head over heels up to six times.

Also part of the park is the 20-acre Hurricane Harbor Chicago, a water park that has just added Tsunami Surge, the tallest water coaster in the world at 86 feet, with a top speed of 25 mph.

Six Flags Great America is unrecognizable in the build-up to Halloweem when the park opens for Fright Fest, with frightening street performers, haunted houses and spooky twists to many of the rides.

3. Illinois Beach State Park

Both a popular summer destination and an invaluable natural site, Illinois Beach State Park takes up several miles of lakeshore, from Waukegan almost as far as Wisconsin.

You can get there in a matter of minutes from North Chicago, and you’ll encounter the only remaining expanse of beach ridge shoreline in Illinois, accessible via miles of trails.

The dunes support an incredible 650 plant species, and away from the shore are wet prairie, marshland and sandy ridges covered with black oak forest. Naturally the beach is a major draw in the summer months and there’s 6.5 miles waiting for you.

For overnight stays there’s a campground in the southern unit, as well as the 96-room Illinois Beach Resort and Conference Center. Caution is advised for swimmers as there are no on-duty lifeguards.

4. Foss Park

One of the less frequented lakeside parks on the North Shore can be found in North Chicago. One reason why Foss Park is less frequented than others close by is because it doesn’t have a beach.

Three short minutes on the train from North Chicago and you’ll be in Waukegan where the novelist Ray Bradbury was born.

One of the city’s best features is its excellent municipal beach, backed by natural sand dunes. One mile long, the beach is free to the public all summer long, but non-residents may have to pay a fee for parking.

Just to the south is the 1,000 slip marina, and the Stiner Pavilion nearby hosts outdoor concerts on Tuesdays all summer long.

Waukegan’s dockside area is a good spot for a stroll, and Dockside Ice Cream here is loved for its hot dogs and fine selection of ice cream flavors and cone styles.

6. Lambs Farm

This wonderful non-profit organization in nearby Libertyville offers vocational and residential services to some 250 adults with developmental disabilities.

Members of Lambs Farm’s community are employed at the farm’s various attractions, which offer a perfect family day out, with a mini golf course, amusement rides, miniature train and a petting zoo, complemented by a restaurant, pet shop, bakery, country stand and thrift shop.

Lambs Farm has a long history, going back to a pet store founded by Bob Terese and Corinne Owen in 1961, giving rare employment opportunities to people with developmental disabilities.

They relocated to the current 70-acre site in 1965, turning a restored barn from the 19th century into one of the largest pet stores in the area.

7. Robert McClory Bike Path

Running the length of Lake County is a 25-mile bike path that threads several North Shore communities between the Illinois-Wisconsin state line in the north and the boundary with Cook County in the south.

Much of the route follows the course of the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad, which was extended to Milwaukee in 1919 and shut down in the 1960s.

The trail runs through quiet residential areas, occasionally using low-traffic streets and passes by numerous parks and Lake County preserves.

For extra convenience the Metra line runs parallel to much of the trail, so you can always hop on a train if you run out of time or get tired. At the northern trailhead the path merges with the Kenosha County Bike Trail, while in the south you can join the Green Bay Trail.

8. Heinz Orchard

Close by in Green Oaks is a small, family-owned orchard that has opened its doors for a U-Pick season every September for more than 70 years.

Heinz Orchard is a no nonsense kind of place, offering nothing more than high-quality apples and bucolic scenery.

Several varieties are grown here, among them McIntosh, Jonathan, Empire, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious, and the farm’s website will let you know when your favorite is coming into season.

There are no admission fees at Heinz Orchards, on the condition that a member of your party has to buy a bag (½ peck or 1 peck).

9. Lake Bluff

The well-to-do village of Lake Bluff is less than ten minutes south by car, a brief Metra ride or an easy trip along the Robert McClory Bike Path.

On E Scranton Ave, by the station is a cute little downtown area with a village green. In the space of two or three blocks are cafes, a microbrewery, a wine bar and Vegan (Be Market), American (Maevery Public House) and Mexican (The Otherdoor) restaurants.

There are a few stores clustered around, including a florist, and convenient for people riding the Robert McClory Bike Path, a cycle shop.

You can take a while to enjoy the foliage at the Village Green, and a short way south is Artesian Park, home to the Lake Bluff Farmers’ Market on Friday mornings, early June through early October.

10. Independence Grove Forest Preserve

The centerpiece of this preserve just west of North Chicago is a 115-acre lake reclaimed from a gravel quarry.

The land was purchased by the county in the 1970s and went through a long-term restoration before Independence Grove Forest Preserve opened to the public in 2001.

There are 7.1 miles of trails rambling around the lakeshore and then connecting with the Des Plaines River Trail to the west.

Spring through fall you can rent kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards and fishing boats for an adventure on the lake, and there’s a summer concert series at Millennia Plaza on the southeast shore.

Make sure to call in at the modern Visitor Center, which has intriguing natural history exhibits, while if the conditions are right in winter, ice skating, ice fishing and cross-country are available at the preserve.

11. Foss Park Golf Course

Open to non-residents, this public 18-hole golf course has been around for almost half a century and is one of the best kept secrets on the golf scene in the Chicago area.

Praised for its constant good condition and manicured greens, Foss Park Golf Course is a park 72, with a total yardage of 6,839 from the tips.

This is a rather hilly track, with a slope rating of 126, with elevated greens and scenic views throughout. For the last decade the course has hosted the Foss Park Open in June, attracting some of the top golfing talent in the Midwest.

12. Greenbelt Forest Preserve

In a very urbanized area, this 600-acre preserve on North Chicago’s northwest side is an oasis with a fascinating location and a riveting story to tell.

The Greenbelt Forest Preserve is on the Green Bay Road, which cuts the property in two and was used as a walking path by Native Americans and then fur traders in the 18th century.

The Green Bay Road follows the sub-continental divide, to the point where rain that falls to the east will end up in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and rain falling on the west side will head for the Gulf of Mexico.

There are five miles of trails for hiking (four miles for biking and cross-country skiing), with informative interpretive boards here and there. In spring and summer there’s a fine display of wildflowers like mayapples, blue-eyed grass and shooting stars.

13. Old School Forest Preserve

After snowfall in winter, this Lake County preserve is a fantastic day out.

On the east side and visible from I-94, the preserve’s outstanding feature is its sledding hill, which has thrilled generations of kids since the land was acquired from the defunct Bradley School in the mid-1970s.

Old School Forest Preserve is just under 550 acres, in a landscape where mature oak woodland gives way to sweeps of prairie.

August is another great time to pay a visit, when native prairie species like purple milkweed and golden alexanders are in flower.

14. The People’s Choice Family Fun Center

In business since 1984, this family entertainment in Waukegan has recently moved to a new location.

In 43,000 square feet of indoor space, the center is open 365 days a year, and has a small world of fun for children, including an arcade, token redemption games and an 18-hole, blacklight mini golf course.

There are more than 150 machines at the arcade, complemented by a redemption counter with more than 1,000 prizes, from stuffed animals to candy.

Inside the center is Rocky’s Pizzeria and Ice Cream Shoppe, which has a second location on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in North Chicago.

15. Lake Carina

In the care of Lake County, this small lake by the Des Plaines River is a much-loved fishing destination. You can fish from the shore or dock, and small, non-motorized craft are permitted on the water.

Lake Carina ranks well for largemouth bass fishing, and quite well for bluegill and the minimum length limit for bass is 15”, with a 1 fish daily limit.

Running close by the river on the east bank is the Des Plaines River Trail, which starts just north in Wadsworth and follows the watercourse through almost all of Lake County and some of Cook County.

1.  Art Institute of Chicago

What is it? Located in downtown Chicago, the Art Institute is a great art museum that is home to  more than 300,000 artworks that span centuries .

Why go? Here, you can find one of the world’s most iconic   paintings like Georges Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (which you may have seen in the cinematic classic  Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ), Edward Hopper's Nighthawks and Grant Wood's American Gothic . Afterwards, explore the stunning Modern Wing, itself a work of art by architect Renzo Piano, or special exhibitions like Life and Afterlife in Ancient Egypt , featuring artworks and artifacts spanning 3,000 years.

2.  Lincoln Park Zoo

What is it? It's   l ocated smack dab in the middle of Lincoln Park, and is home to more than 1,000 animals, including lions, bears, apes and red pandas! 

Why go? You don't even need to open your purse to come here, as it's the only remaining free zoo in Chicago, so just walk right in! It's a great place to take the kids to and requires very little planning. They even offer parties for adults at night, if that's your bag. 

3.  360 CHICAGO

What is it? Sitting right at the top of the towering 875 N Michigan Avenue building (formerly the John Hancock building), this observation deck places you 1,030 feet in the air. On a clear day, visitors can see four different states ( Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan) .

Why go? If you want to do more than just take a really good look at the view then you should probably test your mettle on 360 CHICAGO’s TILT attraction , which dares guests to not freak out as the observation deck is tilted (duh) out over the busy streets below. If you’ve got a fear of heights, this may not be for you.

4.  Garfield Park Conservatory

What is it? T his enormous greenhouse in Garfield Park is a mong the largest conservatories in the United States. It provides a home for some 600 species of plants (most of which aren’t indigenous to the region).

Why go? Make sure to secure a (free!) reservation online and then s top by to admire the gigantic trees that fill the Palm House, or the Jurassic Park -evoking Fern Room, designed to show you what Illinois may have looked like millions of years in the past. In the warmer months, be sure to make time to explore the sprawling outdoor gardens too. 

5.  The Field Museum

What is it? In 1893, this huge natural history museum   was created to become the home to biological and anthropological collections. And, fun fact: It has more dinosaur bones and ancient artifacts than any other institution in Chicago.

Why go? Take a trip here and be transported back in time. Here, you'll find a recreation of   an ancient Egyptian tomb, stand beneath a towering skeleton of Máximo the titanosaur, or encounter Chicago's most famous prehistoric resident, SUE the T. Rex , the largest and most complete T. Rex fossil skeleton ever found. Fuel your passion for discovery with dinosaurs, ancient artifacts, cultural insights and groundbreaking science.

6.  Millennium Park

What is it? One of the most popular places to spend time outdoors in the city, Millennium Park really is vast, covering a massive 24.5 acres. It hosts well-known pieces of public art and a long list of special events, including free concerts and movie screenings in the summer—plus it’s also very good for a nice sit-down.

Why go? Snap a requisite selfie in front of the hulking Cloud Gate (a.k.a. the Bean), take a walk to the Boeing Galleries, go for a stroll through the serene Lurie Gardens or relax on the lawn in front of the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion.

7.  Museum of Science and Industry

What is it? Interactivity is the name of the game at the Museum of Science and Industry, a long-running Hyde Park institution and the largest science center in the Western Hemisphere. It boasts such attractions as a mirror maze, a simulated tornado and an entire WWII-era U-505 submarine.

Why go? Step inside a building that dates back to the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and explore exhibits that depict a Chicago street circa 1910 and a massive model railroad that depicts the 2,200-mile journey from Seattle to Chicago. Right now MSI is hosting Pompeii: The Exhibition, dedicated to the ancient Roman city that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption 1,900 years ago.

8.  Wrigley Field

What is it?   Built in 1914, this timeless institution is home to the city’s North Side baseball team, the Chicago Cubs.

Even if you have no interest in baseball, you can grab a Chicago-style hot dog and soak in the electric atmosphere. 9.  The 606

• Humboldt Park

What is it? This is Chicago’s version of NYC's High Line,  a  2.7-mile stretch of an abandoned elevated rail line. It has now been revamped into a pedestrian path that connects Logan Square, Humboldt Park, Bucktown and Wicker Park.

Why go? Try coming here for a run, or even take a bike along and quickly get around to many different neighborhoods, with more than a dozen entrance and exit points along the route. You'll see some great art on your journey.

10.  Shedd Aquarium

What is it? This Museum Campus staple is the home to thousands of aquatic creatures from all around the world, including adorable rockhopper penguins, a truly impressive selection of sharks and a giant Pacific octopus.

Why go? Watch tropical fish swim through a 90,000-gallon aquarium in the gigantic Caribbean Reef exhibition or pony up some extra cash to have a face-to-face encounter with a penguin, otter or an adorable beluga whale.

11.  Chinatown

What is it?  One of the oldest Chinese-American communities in the country.

Why go?  Explore a variety of Asian businesses, learn about Chinese culture by checking out a museum or have a picnic in a beautiful park when you visit Chinatown. There’s no shortage of things to do and you can easily spend an entire day wandering the South Side neighborhood. Best of all, a seemingly endless wealth of restaurants are at the ready to help you refuel once you’re worked up an appetite, so prepare to feast on dumplings, noodles, barbecued meats and much more. 

12.  Music Box Theatre

What is it? This beloved two-screen Lakeview movie house doesn’t usually show the latest blockbusters, but that’s kind of the charm. What it does offer is a beautifully curated selection of films in a vintage theater with clouds projected on its ceiling.

Why go? The Music Box is one of the best spots in town to see movies that don't typically make it to the multiplex. Think arthouse releases, documentaries and foreign language films. It’s also got a comfortable lounge and garden, perfect for killing some time before or after a film. If you don't feel like leaving the house to see a flick, you can rent one through the Music Box Direct streaming platform .

13.  The Green Mill

What is it? This Uptown cocktail lounge is a fixture of Chicago’s live jazz scene and has been slinging drinks since before Prohibition (Al Capone and other gangsters used to hang out at the Green Mill—his associate ‘Machine Gun’ Jack McGurn was even a part-owner).

Why go? Once you’ve snapped a picture of the iconic Green Mill marquee, head inside, order a cocktail and take in a set from some of the city’s top jazz musicians. The music typically goes late—weekdays it shuts at a whimsical 1:11am—but you’ll usually need to show up early if you want to score a good seat.

14.  Jackson Park

What is it? You might know Jackson Park best for the fact that it served as the site of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. It's also a great place to visit to get lost in nature, without even having to leave the city.

Why go? Take a walk through the Garden of the Phoenix and see Yoko Ono's stunning Skylanding sculpture. Or head over to the iconic Statue of the Republic at the intersection of Hayes and Richards Drives. Or, if you’re really looking for a ramble, take a detour to the nearby Midway Plaisance Park, which leads to Washington Park.

15.  Lakefront Trail

• South Shore

What is it? This epic 18-mile trail stretches all the way from Hollywood Avenue to 71st Street. On it you'll find walkers, runners and cyclists, getting their daily exercise and soaking in the glorious lakeside views.

Why go? Unsurprisingly the trail is hugely popular—prepare to fend off crowds in summer, though it's worthwhile to make a trip for the view and easy access to the lake for a dip. 

16.  National Museum of Mexican Art

• Lower West Side

What is it? Located in the Latino neighborhood of Pilsen, this cultural institution hosts one of the country’s largest collections of Mexican art—and admission is always free.

Why go? Inside the permanent “Nuestras Historias” exhibition, you’ll see work from famous artists like José de Páez and Miguel Cabrera as well modern pieces by Chicago-based talent such as muralist Héctor Duarte and imagist Errol Ortiz.

17.  Hideout

• River West/West Town

What is it? Situated in a tiny house on a nondescript industrial corridor is o ne of Chicago's smallest and most hallowed independent music venues .

Why go?  It can be difficult to reach this tucked-away spot via public transportation, but it is worth it for the cheap beer, fresh sounds and DJs dropping nostalgia, from Prince to Devo.

18.  Museum of Contemporary Art

What is it? T his iconic Chicago museum mainstay is a destination for cutting edge exhibitions and programming. It h osts one of the largest collections of contemporary art in the United States.

Why go? Take in a constantly shifting lineup of exhibitions, including touring shows from the likes of Takashi Murakami and Kerry James Marshall, or stop by the MCA Store, where you'll find everything from ceramics made by local artists to apparel from internationally-renowned designers.

19.  Chicago Riverwalk

What is it? T he Riverwalk provides a pedestrian path along the city’s most popular waterway as it hugs  the banks of the main branch of the Chicago River. It’s lined with restaurants, bars and gathering spaces.

Why go? The waterside walkway allows you to observe some of the city’s most gorgeous architecture from a new perspective. Plus, it's the best spot to take in the late night Art on theMart, which projects images on the side of Merchandise Mart in the evenings.

20.  Humboldt Park

What is it? Humboldt Park is one of the biggest stretches of green space on Chicago’s West Side. And it’s a good one, filled with  lagoons, pedestrian paths, wide-open fields and a boathouse.

Why go?  Humboldt Park is especially great in the warmer months, when it becomes something of a community hub, attracting crowds who come to enjoy the views of the lagoons from the boathouse, eat Puerto Rican food sold by vendors throughout the park and ramble along the winding paths.

21.  Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise

What is it? A 90-minute boat tour on the Chicago River.

Why go?  You may be familiar with the city’s gorgeous skyline, but do you know the deep history behind it? The Chicago Architecture Center's renowned boat cruise will take you down the Chicago River and give you the fascinating scoop on more than 50 buildings along the way. It’s the perfect way to see the city from new angles and learn something in the process.

22.  Chicago Theatre

What is it? A hundred-year-old theater in the heart of downtown.

Why go?   From Aretha Franklin to Frank Sinatra, some of the biggest names in the world have performed at this legendary, 3,600-seat theater. You can catch all types of concerts and stand-up sets here every week. If you’re more interested in the history side of things, book a tour that lets you explore the venue and even stand on the historic stage!

23.  Chicago Cultural Center

What is it? Cultural events and the arts are the focus of this public building, which also happens to contain the world’s largest stained glass Tiffany dome.

Why go? There’s always something happening in the Chicago Cultural Center, including free concerts in the Preston Bradley Hall and art exhibitions on the third floor. Best of all, you’ll never have to pay admission. Want to snag a souvenir? Stop by Buddy , a shop showcasing local artists.

24.  Chicago History Museum

What is it:  Once upon a time this museum was just the stodgy old Chicago Historical Society, which let you sift through thousands of archived photographs and curio. That library still exists, but joining it are several permanent and temporary exhibits, the largest of which is "Chicago: Crossroads of America," a treasure trove of fascinating historical objects, including a chunk of the original Fort Dearborn.

Why go:  I f you want an in-depth look at the people, places and things that make Chicago what it is today, the History Museum is well worth a visit.

25.  WNDR Museum

• Installation

What is it?  An interactive experience based around art and technology that encourages guests to reconsider the world around them.

Why go?  The WNDR Museum is the home of Chicago's only Infinity Mirror Room, created by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. After you snap a selfie inside of it, check out more one-of-a-kind art installations, including a room dedicated to the work of artist Keith Haring and a hallway that features a light-up floor.

26.  Historic Pullman Foundation Visitors Center

What is it?  This destination houses exhibits about the growth and preservation of this historic South Side neighborhood, site of the 1894 Pullman Strike and other important moments in U.S. labor history.

Why go? Back in the 1880s, businessman George Pullman built a company town to house employees for his eponymous railroad sleeper car company. The town was annexed into Chicago at the turn of the 20th century, and the industrial complex has since been designated a National Monument. Swing by the Visitors Center on the first Sunday of every month for a guided tour.

27.  The Second City

• Comedy clubs

What is it? Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Joan Rivers are just a few of the famous folks who honed their talents onstage at this theater devoted to sketch and improvised comedy.

Why go? You’ll see some of the most talented rising comedic talents (and maybe a couple future Saturday Night Live cast members) on the Second City’s Mainstage. If you want to learn more about improv, stand-up or sketch writing, you can sign up for a class at the Training Center.

28.  Goose Island Fulton Street Brewery & Taproom

• United Center

What is it? Goose Island, one of Chicago's oldest craft breweries, produces many of its beloved beers at this facility. It also contains a barrel aging warehouse and a sleek taproom where visitors can pop in for a drink.

Why go?  Whether you’re after a fresh-poured Goose Island beer or you’re on the lookout for a rarity (including the sought-after Bourbon County Stout and its many variants), you can grab a seat in the Fulton Street brewery's taproom or patio. 

29.  Robie House

• Historic buildings and sites

What is it? This house is widely considered to be the greatest example of architect Frank Lloyd Wright's signature Prairie-style architecture. It was inspired by the flat Midwestern plains when it was constructed in 1910.

Why go? It's free to admire the building from outside. But if you want to get the full experience, snag a ticket for a tour offered by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust, you can go inside and see the original art glass accents, restored furniture and a fireplace that divides the home's living and dining areas.

30.  Navy Pier

What is it? Navy Pier is a popular spot for tourists to flock to, and it stretches out into  the waters of Lake Michigan. It's also home to a 200-foot Ferris wheel, Chicago Children's Museum, Chicago Shakespeare Theater and plentiful dining options.

Why go? This is a great place to bring the whole family along to, as there's something to do for everyone. You can take a ride on the Ferris wheel, take a boat tour or even visit the world's largest rooftop bar, Offshore .

31.  The B_Line (Hubbard Street Murals)

What is it? Back in 1971, artist Ricardo Alonzo and local volunteers from the West Town Community Art Center filled a stretch of Hubbard Street in the West Loop with vivid murals on environmental themes as a street art project. Now, with curator and managing director Levar Hoard at the helm, local artists have been working to restore and reimagine this open-air street art gallery since 2019.

Why go? There are many incredible places to view street art in Chicago, but The B_Line, which runs along West Hubbard Street roughly between Racine and Halsted, is diverse, vivid and a clash of past and present—you'll see some of the original works alongside newer landmarks, including a powerful tribute to late Chicago rapper Juice WRLD.

32.  DuSable Museum of African American History

What is it?  Founded in 1961 by educator and artist Margaret Taylor Burroughs, the DuSable Museum is the country's oldest independent African American museum. The museum is named for Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, a Haitian trader who is considered the first permanent resident of Chicago, and holds more than 15,000 pieces. Pay a visit to see paintings, sculptures, print works and historical memorabilia relating to the history, contributions and experiences of African and African American people.

Why go?  The DuSable Museum hosts a variety of exhibitions focusing on national, local and global Black history and culture, as well as timely programming—current highlights include "Fighting Racism in the Trenches," which chronicles the story of World War I veteran Kathryn Magnolia Johnson.

Located on Chicago’s affluent Near North Side — just north of the Chicago River — the River North business and residential area has come a long way from its shady beginnings as a notorious red light district . Now home to some of the city’s trendiest art galleries, hotels, bars, and restaurants, it attracts well-heeled locals and visitors alike. It’s also home to several well-known landmarks, including the Merchandise Mart,   which once belonged to the Kennedy family.  

River North is adjacent to the Gold Coast, which is just to its north, the  Magnificent Mile shopping district , which is just to the east, and the Loop, Chicago's business district, which is just south past the Chicago River.

Treat Yourself to a Tantalizing Meal at Tanta

Tanta Chicago , home to award-winning Peruvian chef, Gaston Acurio, offers colorful meals full of flavor and spice. Acme Hotel Co , a chic boutique hotel, offers comfort, rock ‘n’ roll style at affordable prices. Owned and operated by a Chicago-based development group, ACME targets those budget-conscious types looking for the type of amenities typically featured at local luxury properties. ACME houses two eating and drinking venues:  The Berkshire Room , a craft cocktail lounge, and West Town Bakery, a chef-driven eatery that has some of our favorite pastries. The bakery even carries its own version of the popular cronut, and it’s available in several varieties.

Amenities: Order coffee at check-in for a specific time, and a thermos will be delivered direct to your door for free as part of the Morning Joe program. Each room has Amazon Echo so you can stay connected. And, if you're a guitar player, you'll love having an ESP guitar in your room — select suites automatically have them but you can check one out at the desk and rock out in your room. Another cool amenity is the DIY Cocktail Kit, which costs $18—you can keep the shaker.

They've transformed the downstairs bar into  Watershed , a cocktail lounge specializing in spirits from the Great Lakes region and craft beer.

Margeaux Brasserie , a luxurious traditional Parisian cafe and bar, with a 1920's-themed ambiance, offers several varieties of French champagne perfect for clinking glasses. You'll love the romantic, toned-down atmosphere, the gentle music that you can still have a conversation over, and the creative menu options. Located inside the Waldorf Astoria Chicago , on east Walton, there's ample parking available.

Enjoy a Drink and a Show

Underground Wonder Bar 

River North has its fair share of jazz clubs and blues bars but we recommend heading to Underground Wonder Bar to hear the musical stylings of home-grown artists. Passionate blues, jazz, reggae and Latin performers have made Underground Wonder Bar a must-do stop for many famous visiting musicians, including the likes of the Stones and David Byrne.

Shop Till You Drop

Ikram, the luxury women’s boutique, moved from its long-time Rush Street location to a larger space in River North. The city of Rockford is located on the Rock River in Northern Illinois. It is the second-largest city in Illinois after Chicago.

Visit DeKalb

DeKalb is the home to Northern Illinois University.

Many of the original buildings of DeKalb have been maintained in their original condition and serve as a unique way to view the changing styles of architecture over the years.

This includes buildings such as the Egyptian Theater, which first opened in 1929, and the Ellwood House Museum, a Victorian mansion first built in the 1870s and altered by the Ellwood family into the early 20th Century.

Discover waterfalls

There are many beautiful waterfalls in Illinois , making for amazing views while exploring the abundant nature of the state.

Several of those waterfalls are located in the Northern part of the state.

You will find many types of waterfalls ranging from impressive cascading falls through to gentle stepstone waterfalls.

Stumble upon historic sites

John Deere Historic site

The world-famous company John Deere was first founded in Northern Illinois in the mid-1830s by blacksmith and repairman John Deere.

The company was revolutionary with not only the invention of the self-scouring steel plow but also the unique (for the time) business model of manufacturing products before sales.

The John Deere historic site commemorates this pioneer of the industry by preserving the original Deere family home, first built in 1836.

The house has been maintained with period household items to accurately portray how the family and their live-in apprentices would have lived.

There is also a working blacksmith shop on site. The site is an ode to pioneer living as well as the unique figure of John Deere.

There is also a gift shop for memorabilia available.

Heritage Farm Museum

The Byron Forest Preserve is a sprawling property of prairies and woodland located on the Rock River.

They aim to preserve open spaces and the natural woodland of the area while providing activities for the community.

In this space is the Heritage Farm Museum, a collection of farm buildings from the mid-1800s, preserved to display what early farm life in the area was like.

There are 5 different buildings, each displaying a different aspect of farm life.

These include a grout house, barns (complete with ‘residents’), and more.

While visiting the farm you can follow workshops learning how to make cornbread, churn butter, and (seasonally) maple syrup and honey production.

The Heritage Farm Museum is a great activity for families or history enthusiasts looking to learn more about the area.

Ellwood House Museum

The Ellwood House Museum is a well-preserved site consisting of three different historic buildings from the late 1800s and four beautiful gardens.

These include the Ellwood Mansion, originally built for entrepreneur Isaac Ellwood and his family, the Ellwood-Nehring House, and a once multi-car garage turned into an exhibit space.

The museum offers guided tours from 30 minutes to 1 hour that cover several buildings on the property. The tours end in the visitor center where detailed exhibits about the Ellwood family can be seen, including the role they played in the historic life in the DeKalb region.

Tours are offered Wednesday – Saturday at 1 pm and 2 pm with additional times being added during the tourist season.

Tickets for the tour must be purchased at least one day prior.

Old Settlers log cabin

The Old Settlers Log Cabin is another historic site, but this time largely dedicated to the early settlers of the area. It is located on the property that was once Fort Dixon, which was a military base during the Black Hawk war.

On the property, there is a statue of Abraham Lincoln at 23 years old when he served as a volunteer during the Black Hawk war.

This is the only known statue of Abraham Lincoln in military attire.

The cabin is open to visitors on weekends and during the Dixon Petunia Festival, which is held over the 5 days preceding Independence Day (4 th of July).

The Petunia Festival is a small festival that takes place in Dixon showcasing a parade, fireworks, local bands, and of course the petunias of the area.

Lincoln-Douglas debate square

This site is a pivotal site in regards to the early politics of America and the creating of an environment that lead to the Civil War.

On this site the Freeport Doctrine, a statement regarding slavery and state rights of the time, was proclaimed by Stephen A. Douglas in 1858. This happened during the second of the famous debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas.

It created a division in the Democratic Party between the North and the South and allowed Abraham Lincoln to win the 1860 election.

This divided atmosphere and Lincoln’s Presidential win ultimately led to the start of the Civil War.

The site has a number of waysides describing the events and issues surrounding the debate and how it fits into American history.

The site has a relaxed park setting with benches and walks to enjoy as well as the historical elements.

Graham Ginestra House

The Graham Ginestra House is a historic site located on the property of the Ethnic Heritage Museum in Rockford.

The house has been home to two influential families who ran businesses in the area.

It was first built by Freeham Graham in 1857, a businessman with a range of companies. It was later sold to Leonard Ginestra and his wife Mary who ran a mobile home park in the area.

The house has a Greek Revival, Italianate architectural style and has been maintained with appropriate historical items from the era.

This includes many pieces from the family themselves, including distillery pieces from Leonard Ginestra’s wine-making.

Tours are offered on Sundays from 2-4 pm and combined tours with the Ethnic Heritage Museum are available.

Franklin Creek Grist Mill & Interpretive center

The Franklin Creek Grist Mill and Interpretive Center operates as part of the welcome and education center of Franklin Creek State Natural Area.

It is a large 4-story reconstruction of the grist mill located on the site 150 years ago.

At the center, visitors can watch the 4-ton waterwheel turn and operate delicate historic machinery to grind corn as it would have been done in the past.

They are also able to learn more about historic construction techniques and the important role that the mill played in early colonial life in the area.

There are also educational exhibits about the flora and fauna of the Natural Area and advice on the hiking trails and scenic points to see.

Visit a museum

Discovery center museum.

The Discovery Center Museum is a fun and interactive children’s science museum spread over 2 floors with more than 300 different exhibits.

The exhibits focus on various science topics, including the human body, electricity, space travel, machinery, and light.

Many of the exhibits are interactive and hands-on, encouraging children to be involved in science and experience it for themselves.

Behind the museum, there is also a large Discovery Park, a multi-level science park with mazes, a water play area, and the popular dinosaur dig pit.

There are also various temporary exhibits throughout the year.

The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday. Tickets must be reserved in advance, either online or via phone call. Visitors can choose to visit in the morning or afternoon.

Illinois Railway Museum

The Illinois Railway Museum has an interesting history in itself, as it was started in 1953 by a small group of men who came together to purchase and preserve Indiana Railroad 65, an interurban car that had been retired and would soon be destroyed.

Since then the museum has acquired many different historic railway pieces ranging from steam locomotives to more modern electric pieces.

Some of the highlights include the inspiration for Japan’s famous bullet trains, the Electroliner train, and the last surviving Green Hornet streetcar of Chicago.

The museum has a 5-mile demonstration railroad where visitors can experience riding historic trains.

There are many educational displays and immersive exhibits to encourage learning about the interesting history of railroads in the area.

Loveland Museum

The Loveland Museum in Dixon was founded in 1940 as a way to continue the Loveland family name, preserve the history of the area and honor the ‘father’ of the community of Dixon, John Dixon.

The community house part of the property can be rented for special events and creates a beautiful atmosphere.

The museum houses a range of historic items from the area’s history.

There are exhibits surrounding John Dixon, the founder of the community, The Black Hawk War and Civil War, and various other significant events in the area.

There are also exhibits focusing on local industry and attractions, the Truesdell bridge disaster, and President Ronald Reagan.

This museum is a great way to see the small and often-forgotten items and aspects of history.

Visit a historic mansion

Hegeler Carus Mansion

The Hegeler Carus Mansion is a unique landmark in Northern Illinois as one of the great Second Empire structures. It was designed in 1874 by renowned architect Boyington for the prominent Hegeler family.

In 1887, Hegeler launched the Open Court Publishing Company operating out of the 1st floor and hired Dr. Paul Carus, a German scholar.

From this location, Carus wrote over 70 books and countless other articles.

The 57-room mansion is virtually unaltered from its original appearance and offers a unique look into a part of history.

It is considered a great achievement of architecture and interior design and houses the oldest indoor gymnasium in existence.

Colonel Davenport Historic house

Colonel Davenport Historic House is the preserved home of George Davenport, an influential figure in the area’s history.

He was a prosperous trader and businessman who later also served during the Black Hawk war.

As his business continued improving, he built a home in 1833 which become a Centrepoint of industry in the area.

The house was considered a mansion for its time and is built using unique construction methods.

It is built in the Federal style and has been well-maintained over the years.

It now functions as an interesting look into business and industry in history.

The house is open from Wednesday– Saturday from 12 pm – 4 pm. There are guided tours available.

Ulysses S. Grant home

The Ulysses S. Grant home was once home to the 18 th President of the United States.

The house was a present to Grant from the citizens of Galena after his return from the Civil War in 1865.

It was designed by architect William Dennison and enjoyed greatly by Ulysses S. Grant. He described it as “a lovely villa exquisitely furnished with everything good taste could desire”.

Following his election, he didn’t spend much time in the house anymore but the house was always well maintained by caretakers in anticipation of his return.

The house is currently owned by the State of Illinois and was completely restored in 1995. During the restoration, it was returned to its 1868 appearance. Today visitors can see much of the furniture used by Grant and his family.

This is a great way to look into the presidential history of the time.

The house is open Wednesday – Sunday with 30-minute tours running regularly throughout the day.

Visit Galena wineries

In the northwest of Illinois, fall signals the start of the grape-stomping season among the many beautiful wineries in Galena.

There are 4 main wineries with each offering different and unique experiences.

Galena Cellars Vineyard and Winery has both fruit wines and hybrid grape wines and offers behind-the-scenes tours, overnight stays, and bike trails.

Massbach Ridge Winery has a range of whites, reds, and roses, and holds various events throughout the year, including the fall Massbach Stomp.

Rocky Waters Vineyard and Winery has a lodge-style tasting room and beautiful scenery and offers overnight stays for groups of up to 10.

Best things to do in Central Illinois. 

Fergedaboudit Vineyard and Winery uses hybrid grapes to create Tuscan-style wine and participate in the Garlic Fest in August. Their tasting room is decorated like an old Tuscan village and is open year-round.

Visiting wineries is a great way to experience the rolling hills and landscapes of Northern Illinois, as well as the delicious wines and cuisine.

Visiting the company is a great activity as the staff offer friendly, laidback tours that feel more like visiting a friend than a business.

It’s possible to see all parts of the distillery, including the barrel room, and at the end of the 45-minute tour is a guided tasting.

The tour is a unique and enjoyable experience, but visiting the Blaum Bros Distilling Co. is also great for those who just want to enjoy a drink on vacation.

With their distinguished cocktail bar, Blaum Bros is a great place to relax.

Six flags Great America

Six Flags Great America is an ideal choice for the whole family.

It is a large amusement park now spanning 123 hectares. This makes it the largest theme park in the Midwest.

Originally opened in 1976 and known as Marriott’s Great America, Six Flags acquired the park in 1984 and improved it into its current form.

With four themed areas and over 45 various rides and attractions, a visit to Six Flags Great America is sure to entertain everyone.

There is also an attached water park, Hurricane Harbor , for some extra fun in the summertime.

The Anderson Japanese Gardens

The Anderson Japanese Gardens were established in 1978 by John R. Anderson and were inspired by Anderson’s trip to the Portland Japanese Garden in Oregon.

They were designed by Hoichi Kurisu, the Landscape Director for the Garden Society of Japan from 1968 – to 1972 and designer of various other Japanese gardens in America.

The gardens are designed in a traditional Japanese style, as a walking garden (designed to be strolled around and enjoyed) with a pond in the middle.

The garden features all the key elements of a Japanese garden – water, stone, and plants, and also includes a number of secondary elements.

These include pagodas, stone lanterns, and bridges.

The garden has a number of iconic Japanese trees and plants as well as a traditional sukiya tea house.

The gardens have been officially recognized by the Japanese government for their efforts towards international friendship and cultural heritage.

Chestnut Mountain Resort

Chestnut Mountain Resort is a full-service resort just outside of Galena overlooking the Mississippi River.

In winter, the resort functions as a ski resort with 19 ski runs ranging in difficulty level.

The Art Institute of Chicago is a world class museum with hundreds of thousands of artworks. The diverse collection spans thousands of years and includes pieces from a variety of media including painting, prints, photography, sculpture, decorative arts, textiles, architectural drawings and more.

Millennium Park is part of the larger Grant Park , located in downtown Chicago bordered by Michigan Avenue to the west, Columbus Drive to the east, Randolph Street to the north, and Monroe Street to the south. Until 1996, when the Petronas Towers were built in Kuala Lumpur, the 110 story Sears Tower, now Willis Tower, was the world's tallest office block. Built in 1927 as a donation from the family, the Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain is one of the largest in the world. Designed in the period's iconic Art Deco style, the central fountain is surrounded by four seahorses that represent Lake Michigan's four bordering states. From 8am to 11pm, the fountain bursts to life hourly, shooting 15,000 gallons of water through nearly 200 nozzles each minute to create an impressive display.

Originally called the Columbian Museum of Chicago, the Field Museum of Natural History was founded in 1893 to showcase the biological and anthropological collections gathered for the World Columbian Exposition. The 20-acre green space offers numerous activities for both kids and adults alike, including a climbing wall, a mini-golf course, a 3-acre playground, a public garden, an ice-skating skating "ribbon" during the winter and scooter and rollerblade rentals in the summer, not to mention a tennis facility. Whatever you choose to do, you'll get to enjoy fantastic views of the Chicago skyline. Recent visitors loved that the park is free to access, and they noted that the attraction is excellent for family fun.

Museum of Science and Industry Museum of Science and Industry

Chicago's extensive Museum of Science and Industry is the Western Hemisphere's largest science museum, showcasing more than 35,000 artifacts and a variety of hands-on exhibits meant to inspire creativity. The museum resides in the 14-acre former Palace of Fine Arts, which hosted the famous World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. The fair brought together some of the world's greatest scientific minds, including Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, who at the time were competing to prove which type of electricity – direct current or alternating current – was more effective.

More than 1.7 million people make their way to Willis Tower's Skydeck Chicago each year, and it's easy to see why. Occupying the 103rd floor – that's nine floors higher than 360 CHICAGO – of the 110-story Willis Tower (the third-tallest building in North America after One World Trade Center and Central Park Tower), Skydeck Chicago boasts breathtaking views of the city. Visit on a sunny day and you may be able to see far beyond Chicago's borders to Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and other parts of Illinois.

The highlight for most visitors is the Ledge. Extending 4.3 feet beyond the building's exterior, this platform is made entirely of glass – even the floor. Travelers also liked the video screens that show what it would be like to stand 103 floors above other Chicago attractions, including Wrigley Field and Millennium Park . However, long lines quickly form for Skydeck Chicago, so plan on arriving early or purchasing a Chicago CityPASS, which covers expedited admission into the attraction. Or, simply pay extra for expedited entry, which features an express line to the elevators. For the best views, it's advised that you visit just after opening or after sunset. If you'd like to enjoy the sunset from the tower, plan on arriving 30 to 45 minutes before sunset to ensure you have enough time to get through the elevator line and up to the top.

North Avenue Beach North Avenue Beach free

Located in Lincoln Park directly on Lake Michigan, North Avenue Beach is one of the most popular swimming spots in Chicago. The sandy beach has volleyball courts, plenty of space for visitors to stretch out and multiple things to do near nearby. Plus, it offers spectacular views of the city skyline. Beachgoers can also find restaurants, sports rental companies, restrooms and more inside a 22,000-square-foot beach house adjacent to the shore.

Recent visitors said the beach is a nice spot that is perfect for relaxing, biking and running, but they warned that it can get busy on warm summer days.

The Second City The Second City

If you've seen a sketch comedy show or hilarious movie in the last 40 years, it's likely that someone from The Second City appeared in it. The Second City is one of the world's most iconic improvisational comedy theaters, and it has helped launch the careers of numerous famous comedians, including Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. If you're in the mood for a laugh, check out a live show on any night of the week at any number of The Second City's seven stages (which are all housed in its facility at the northwest corner of North Avenue and Wells Street in Old Town). 

Recent reviewers said that everyone in their group could not stop laughing during the shows, which typically last 90 minutes to two hours. Ticket prices vary by the show and date, but run anywhere from $30 to $100.

The Chicago Theatre The Chicago Theatre

Aside from Cloud Gate and Buckingham Fountain , The Chicago Theatre's red and yellow marquee is perhaps one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Illuminating North State Street at the northern edge of the Loop, The Chicago Theatre first opened its doors in 1921 as an extravagant movie theater and performance venue. Throughout its history, the theater has hosted such big names as Duke Ellington, Diana Ross and Prince, in addition to screening blockbuster flicks. Though the theater fell into disuse in the 1970s, new management and a full renovation in the 1980s helped return the venue to its former glory. Today, the theater is still used for a variety of comedic, theatrical and musical performances.

According to past patrons, the theater's historic appearance enhances the overall experience of catching an event here. Just remember, cameras and video cameras, including those on cell phones, cannot be used during tours or performances. If you're not in town for a show, consider signing up for one of the venue's guided tours. Tour tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for kids ages 12 and younger. Tours are available Monday and Tuesday at noon and 2 p.m. and last about an hour.

Best known for serving gangsters during its speakeasy days, the Green Mill invites travelers to step back in time. The long bar that runs along the club's left side sits in front of smokey mirrors and is peppered with decor reminiscent of the Prohibition era. The entire place is cast in a warm reddish glow while old-time jazz plays from the jukebox. The bar – one of Al Capone’s favorites – has no set menu; order whatever cocktails you like (though the chocolate martinis are delicious). There is also a selection of beer and wine.

Garfield Park Conservatory Garfield Park Conservatory free

One of the biggest botanical conservatories in the United States, the Garfield Park Conservatory houses thousands of plant species in eight indoor gardens, as well as 10 acres of outdoor gardens.

Each indoor space has a distinct focus. The Aroid House features varieties of its namesake, which are among the most popular houseplants; it also features sculptures by the world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly made specifically for the Aroid House. As its name suggests, the Desert House boasts cacti and succulents, while the Fern Room arranges ferns around an indoor lagoon. The Palm House, the conservatory's largest structure, recreates a tropical landscape complete with more than 70 palm trees. Meanwhile, the Elizabeth Morse Genius Children's Garden aims to educate little ones about plants. Horticulture Hall displays a range of flowers and plants and also has tables where visitors can take a seat and have a rest.

The Richard H. Driehaus Museum The Richard H. Driehaus Museum

Occupying a restored mansion built in 1883, the Richard H. Driehaus Museum presents exhibitions relating to architecture, art and design from the 19th century to the present day.

The Nickerson Mansion containing the museum boasts an entrance hall made with so much marble that the building was nicknamed "the Marble Palace." (The museum takes its current name from the philanthropist who founded it in 2003.) Its reception room features intricate woodwork as well as items from the museum's permanent collection, such as a Tiffany Studios lamp that dates back to the early 1900s. Meanwhile, the front parlor displays Renaissance Revival furniture original to the Nickerson Mansion. The dining room, fitted with elaborately carved oak, houses a silver punch bowl first exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Other highlights from the permanent collection include a gem-encrusted inkstand, a ceramic clock, multiple chandeliers, paintings, sculptures and an array of decorative items.

The "People’s Palace," a popular destination occupying a full city block in the downtown Loop neighborhood, is a stunning architectural marvel as well as a venue for a great deal of cultural programming, including art exhibits and concerts. Among its features are one of the largest Tiffany stained-glass domes in the world (made with around 30,000 individual pieces of glass) and a marble lobby adorned with mosaics made of gold, glass and precious stones.

Visitors invariably rave about the impressive structure and its elaborate decorations, saying it’s worth it to pop in for free to see the ornate ceiling.

University of Chicago University of Chicago free

Founded in 1890 by John D. Rockefeller, the University of Chicago is an urban research university in the city's Hyde Park neighborhood close to Lake Michigan. Currently, it has more than 7,000 undergraduate students and more than 10,000 graduate, professional or other students as well as nearly 2,400 full-time faculty members.

Impressive as those statistics may be, they aren't reasons to visit. But the university's 217-acre campus, which was designated a botanic garden in 1997, and its mixture of English Gothic and modern architecture are. Some of the newer structures were designed by celebrated architects like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen, while some of the older ones are adorned with gargoyles that date back to the 1893 World Columbian Exposition. The university welcomes visitors to explore its campus, and provides information about its architecture on its website. Those who've visited before routinely call the buildings diverse and beautiful, and many recommend stopping by in the spring when flowers bloom across campus, or fall when amber leaves transform the grounds.

The Location

Study ranks Chicago as most walkable city in America for tourists

With summer on the way and tourism ramping up in Chicago, a recent study shows that there is plenty of reason behind the appeal of traveling to the Windy City.

The study, conducted by Preply , analyzed major U.S. cities and measured how easy it was to navigate each city's most recognizable tourist landmarks on foot.

Compared to European cities that are known for being walkable, the expansive and car-dependent nature of many American cities makes it much more difficult to see what a city has to offer without a vehicle.

The study found that Chicago is the most walkable city for tourists in the U.S. by this metric, with it taking just 28 minutes to explore the city's most famous landmarks, including "The Bean" or "Cloud Gate" and the Magnificent Mile.

The brisk pace in Chicago is miles ahead of Orlando, which the study ranked as the least walkable city for American tourists.

According to Preply, it takes over 11 hours and 65,100 steps to cover Orlando's major landmarks on foot.

The only other cities where major landmarks can be seen within an hour on foot were Nashville and Dallas, taking 33 minutes and 41 minutes, respectively.

Rounding out the top five were Santa Fe and New Orleans, each requiring between 6,000 and 7,000 steps and less than an hour and 15 minutes to see the major attractions.

In addition to The Bean and the Magnificent Mile, Preply included Millennium Park itself, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Architecture Center as the spots that could be seen within 28 minutes of walking.

Outside of Chicago, Milwaukee was the lone U.S. city to crack the top 15, coming in at 15th at 2 hours and 35 minutes of walking and 14,280 steps.
