During a NASA, Intuitive Machines Moon Mission update, captured on YouTube , Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus said today:

“With respect to EagleCam — what an amazing team of faculty and students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University who put their heart and soul into an ejectable camera that would come off our Nova-C or Odysseus lander and eject onto the surface.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t get to that, with the power descent the way it happened, and so … as we went to each payload to try and reactivate them, we were able to reactivate the EagleCam. We reset the visual processing unit and powered up the EagleCam, and were able to eject it, and (we) ejected it about 4 meters away from the vehicle safely. However, either in camera or in the Wi-Fi signal back to the lander, something might not be working correctly. So, the Embry-Riddle team is working on that and wrestling with that to see if there’s anything they can do.

I think it’s a wild success. I would love to fly the EagleCam again. Those students put their heart into it and it’s a really innovative design, and if we can get a picture of a landing, I would love to give it to them. So, we’ll see what happens going forward.”

Embry-Riddle Leaders Praise EagleCam Team’s Dedication

*The announcement below was originally published at 5 p.m. on Feb. 28, 2024.

The EagleCam team is incredibly proud to be the first university student-built payload on the moon. With the challenges presented by the off-nominal landing configuration of the Odysseus lander, the student team has been working tirelessly over the past six days to adapt mission plans and procedures in order to deploy its CubeSat camera system.

Despite the team’s strong effort, the technical complications have currently resulted in an inability to acquire images of the Odysseus lander. However, the team has been able to collect other data sets from the EagleCam system, and these data will be analyzed and published in the near future. In addition to the team’s primary mission objectives, they also set out to test an electrodynamic dust shield — a device meant to electrically “shake” lunar regolith, or moon dust, off the EagleCam’s lenses — after landing.

Embry-Riddle President P. Barry Butler, Ph.D., said, “The EagleCam team of Embry-Riddle students, from first-year undergraduates to doctoral candidates, have accomplished an incredible feat. From its inception, EagleCam has been completely designed and built by students. The team has consistently displayed agility, creativity and adaptability and has gained invaluable lessons from this experience.”

Dr. Troy Henderson, associate professor of Aerospace Engineering and director of the Space Technologies Laboratory at Embry-Riddle, said, “I am incredibly proud of the EagleCam team! They overcame several obstacles in real-time with creative engineering solutions. The team worked tirelessly and intensely, and they did an amazing job. They look forward to applying the insights gained from EagleCam to help support future spaceflight operations.”

Dr. Jim Gregory, dean of the College of Engineering at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach, Florida, campus said, “I’m deeply impressed by the innovation, dedication and creativity of the EagleCam team! The students and faculty have accomplished great feats, and we’re extremely proud of all that they have learned, experienced, developed and achieved.”

Dr. Butler added, “Congratulations to all involved in the historic IM-1 mission. For years to come, our students and graduates will continue to be inspired by the EagleCam team’s determination, perseverance and innovation.”

Device Remains Operational; Team Optimistic for Deployment

Following what Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus described as “ quite a spicy seven-day mission ,” the Embry-Riddle team has been working around the clock to adapt its original deployment plan for EagleCam in order to provide critical visual support of the Odysseus Nova-C class Lunar Lander, which is currently believed to be resting on its side on the moon.

The original deployment sequence for EagleCam — which was planned to take place during the spacecraft’s lunar descent to capture imagery of the lander touching down on the moon’s surface — was first delayed following communication and navigation disruptions the night of landing, Feb. 22, 2024. The plan was modified again after the lander touched down on the moon with an “unexpected attitude,” according to Intuitive Machines reports.

Telemetry data confirms that the Embry-Riddle CubeSat is still fully operational, however, and the team now intends to deploy its camera system to capture imagery of the lander in its current state, offering valuable data that could help Intuitive Machines refine its plans moving forward.

“We are currently running simulations which show that EagleCam should deploy a total distance of somewhere between 3 to 5 meters, with a best guess at about 4.1 meters,” said Dr. Troy Henderson, faculty lead of the EagleCam team.

That distance would give the device, during its ejection from the side of the lander, an opportunity to capture photographs of Odysseus’ orientation and overall health. The imagery would then be transferred via Wi-Fi back to the lander and then transmitted down to engineers on Earth for analysis.

“We are seeing top-notch engineering displayed by our students, and in a uniquely high-pressure environment,” said Dr. Eduardo Rojas, the Embry-Riddle assistant professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering who designed EagleCam’s Wi-Fi antennas. “We have built-in redundancies into this device, with Wi-Fi antenna diversity both in the payload and the lander, which increases our chances of mission success under these unexpected scenarios.”

Once deployed, EagleCam’s primary objective will be to verify that Wi-Fi connection. In addition to designing the Wi-Fi antennas, Rojas also led a team of students who contributed to various other aspects of the project, including designing, manufacturing and testing Wi-Fi hardware for both EagleCam and the lander. They also designed and built EagleCam’s power system.

Embry-Riddle students have remained busy throughout the mission thus far, simulating computer models, working with flat-sat hardware, adjusting system parameters and configurations, researching, and continually evaluating various scenarios to increase the overall chances of mission success.

The timeline for deployment remains unknown. More information will be released as it becomes available.

Embry-Riddle Camera System to Provide Critical Mission Support for Lunar Lander

The EagleCam team has discussed the importance of agility and adaptability since the beginning of this project. As a result, it has been able to quickly pivot over the past 36 hours.

Following news from Intuitive Machines (IM) that the Nova-C class Lunar Lander may currently be on its side, the EagleCam team is now working closely with IM to deploy EagleCam as soon as possible. The goal is that the resulting images will provide critical insight into the lander's orientation, health and additional mission support.

More information will be released as soon as it becomes available.

*The announcement below was originally published at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 23, 2024.

Camera System Deployment Forthcoming

Due to complications with Odysseus’ internal navigation system — specifically concerning the software patch to navigation data to include NASA’s NDL (Navigation Doppler Lidar) payload, which is meant to ensure a soft landing — the decision was made to power down EagleCam during landing and not deploy the device during Odysseus’ final descent.

However, both the Intuitive Machines and EagleCam teams still plan to deploy EagleCam and capture images of the lander on the lunar surface as the mission continues.

The time of deployment is currently unknown.

Stay tuned! More information will be released as soon as it becomes available.

Embry-Riddle Device Lands on Moon

Members of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University community held their breath and then erupted into thunderous applause Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024, as Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus Nova-C class Lunar Lander touched down on the moon.

This was no ordinary mission: In addition to marking the United States’ first return to the lunar surface since 1972, the spacecraft was also carrying precious cargo aboard: an entirely student-built CubeSat called “ EagleCam .”

After four years of design and development, EagleCam touched down at approximately 6:30 p.m. (EST), becoming the first-ever university student-built project to land on the moon.

“We are thrilled and humbled by the remarkable dedication of the many students and faculty at Embry-Riddle who achieved this remarkable milestone,” said Embry-Riddle President P. Barry Butler, Ph.D. “When you look up at the moon tonight, take a moment to think about this awe-inspiring moment for Embry-Riddle.”

“The students truly made history with this project,” added Dr. Jim Gregory, dean of Embry-Riddle’s College of Engineering. “The grit, innovative thinking and persistence they’ve displayed is beyond admirable.”

According to Intuitive Machines, the lander is upright, has good telemetry and solar charging, and the team is continuing to learn more about the vehicle’s specific information (Lat/Lon), overall health and attitude (orientation).

“Odysseus is alive and well,” Intuitive machines reported this morning via X . “Flight controllers are communicating and commanding the vehicle to download science data.”

EagleCam has landed on the moon and the Embry-Riddle team is working with Intuitive Machines’ mission control to downlink data as it becomes available.

More updates will be released as they become available. Please be patient and stay tuned!

Update (Feb. 14): After this story's original publication, the SpaceX launch was rescheduled to 1:05 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024.

Years in the making, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s miniature satellite camera system, called “EagleCam,” is scheduled to leave Earth late tonight aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which is scheduled for launch late Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024 (technically Feb. 14 because it will be after midnight, near 1 a.m. EST).

The launch of this device, which is poised to accomplish a series of firsts — including becoming the first-ever university student-built project to land on the moon, the first to capture third-person imagery of a spacecraft and the first to use Wi-Fi on the lunar surface — will mark the beginning of a more than six-day journey to the moon.

On its final approach — which is scheduled to occur Thursday, Feb. 22 — EagleCam will jettison from Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C Lunar Lander just before touching down on the moon to capture this historic imagery.

“For students to have this opportunity to show that they can design, test and build a working CubeSat — that is a winning combination for their future careers,” said Dr. Troy Henderson, EagleCam faculty advisor and director of Embry Riddle’s Space Technologies Laboratory. “These students have contributed years of hands-on work to a real-world project and have shown an incredible amount of ingenuity.”

A completely student-designed and -developed CubeSat, the EagleCam project began in 2020 , with work on the device taking place on Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus. In addition to the photographic innovations it seeks to accomplish, the device will also test an electromagnetic dust shield , which could potentially help keep the glass on astronauts’ helmets clean, offering greater visibility in space.

“EagleCam will probably record enough data for Ph.D. students to analyze in dissertations for the next 10 years,” Henderson added. “The scientific return is enormous.”

ICYMI: Stefanik Promises to Hold Colleges Accountable at E&W Roundtable on Campus Antisemitism

February 29 , 2024.

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik participated in an Education and the Workforce Committee roundtable about the spread of antisemitism on campuses featuring testimonies from students from universities across the country.

Student participants from Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, University of California, Berkeley, Rutgers University, Stanford University, Tulane University, and Cooper Union were included.

campus tour troy university

Watch her line of questioning here.

View the transcript of her line of questioning below.

Congresswoman Stefanik : “ Thank you so much Chairwoman Foxx, and thank you to each of the students for bravely sharing your testimony of your experiences that you have faced on campus. The inexcusable, hateful, and vicious antisemitism that these universities have allowed to take root and it is a rot that goes deep.

One of you testified that it’s not just about university presidents being removed, but that the fact that had to be pushed on places like Harvard for over a month was inexcusable. We need to continue to make sure that there is accountability to root out this rot of antisemitism. It is clear: It’s not just Harvard, Penn, and MIT, but each of these university leaders have failed. It is atrocious to hear the experiences that each of you have faced whether it’s threats of violent act or the horrific, horrific antisemitic statements.

My question is for Mr. Kestenbaum from Harvard as well as Talia from MIT. Both of those university presidents, one in the case is former, were in that hearing that set off an earthquake and a reckoning. Can you talk to me: What the experience has been on campus after that hearing? So you have a removal of one university, and it’s gotten worse, the antisemitism, and you have a failure from the MIT board to remove the president, in Dr. Kornbluth, and it’s also gotten worse. Can you walk me through, specifically, the antisemitism task force and some of the other things you weren't able to get to in your testimony?”

Shabbos Kestenbaum, Harvard : “Absolutely, thank you for the question. And on behalf of the many Harvard students and faculty who are watching this right now, you are a hero for the Jewish community. So, really thank you, Congresswoman. The antisemitism committee is so remarkably useless that its most respected member and my Professor, Rabbi David Wolpe, resigned. It accomplished absolutely nothing that Harvard’s solution was we’re going to create a second task force. The co-chair of this task force is someone who has repeatedly and on the record stated that antisemitism at Harvard is ‘exaggerated.’ Its other co-chair resigned three days ago. I have emailed the antisemitism task force more than forty times–four, zero. I have not received a single response. When I say that Congress is our last hope it’s because Harvard has refused to take any responsibility, any accountability, and to help Jewish students. All of the acts of antisemitism that I listed in my speech all happened after Claudine Gay resigned. And I would also add that Claudine Gay is still getting paid 900,000 dollars. So what does that tell you about taking responsibility and protecting Jewish students when someone who can say that the calls for genocide against Jews is context-dependent gets to keep her job?”

Congresswoman Stefanik : “And MIT, in the case of Dr. Kornbluth, the fact that she remains as President, what message has that sent to the MIT community?”

Talia Khan, MIT : “Well, immediately after that hearing, we heard from the MIT Corporation executive board members that they fully supported Dr. Kornbluth and every single thing that she said at that hearing including her failure to explicitly condemn calls for genocide on campus. And they said that they believe that she is doing an ‘excellent job’ in combating antisemitism on campus. So, immediately after that, we just get gaslighted by the MIT Corporation. And essentially, after that, they just doubled down in gaslighting us and, you know, creating this illusion that we are, you know, a small group crying wolf. And they essentially continued to tell us, ‘Oh. We’re working on things. Things are happening. We’re very concerned.’ But it's just all lip service, and they play this game where even when we tell them we got an email from a non-Jewish student who lives with a student who is a leading member of the Anti-Israel Club who has stated, very, you know, openly in his dorm, that ‘Violence against any Jew who supports Israel is acceptable’. And when we said this to Dr. Kornbluth and the rest of MIT administration, they acknowledged it. They didn’t do anything. And so, they're making up these things calling us, you know, saying that we are exaggerating or that they can’t police free speech, but this is not about free speech. And I think that’s one thing that we’ve noticed is that there are actual threats. There are people’s offices who have been attacked. People have banged on office doors, tried to unlock office doors, and that has nothing to do with free speech. That is people’s lives at risk. That is people fearing physical violence. There have been people calling for physical violence on our campus, and literally nothing has been done. And I have to walk through the halls, every Jew at MIT has to walk through the halls, seeing these people proudly walking around after they've broken rule, after rule, after rule and not been disciplined. And we've really, it’s really scary. Genuinely, we are genuinely fearful.”

Congresswoman Stefanik : “Well, thank you for that answer. And for the lawyers, for these universities have failed. If you think this is going to get brushed under the rug, the list is getting longer by the day. This Congress will not stop until we hold you accountable. That’s a promise.”

UGA faces new calls for campus safety measures after nursing student's death

ATHENS, Ga. — While the slaying of a nursing student in an apparent random attack at the University of Georgia last week has spurred some students to enact personal safety measures, including walking in groups and packing pepper spray, pressure is mounting on the college to urgently upgrade security on campus.

The debate over how to best protect students comes at a troubling moment across the country as university campuses have been rocked by deadly violence .

At the University of Georgia, an online petition to place "blue lights" — emergency phone boxes that allow the user to quickly connect with police — across its Athens campus of more than 40,000 students garnered over 25,000 signatures on Monday.

And the nonprofit organization SafeD Athens, which includes parents of students, is calling on the university to take on other initiatives, such as increased safety patrols, enhanced camera surveillance systems in designated "safe zones" and re-evaluating the campus' environmental design to identify areas where people could be prone to dangerous situations.

"We've been pushing these programs for well over three years, and many times in front of stakeholders and UGA leadership, and it falls on deaf ears, quite honestly," SafeD Athens board President Susan Monteverde said Monday. "And we're asking parents to help, we're asking students to help or want students to take responsibility for their own safety and security on campus."

Her organization began as a community Facebook group that grew out of a concern for student safety following a string of crimes in the fall of 2021 in downtown Athens, about 70 miles east of Atlanta.

The GBI and local police at Cielo Azulak Apartment in Athens, Ga.

The body of Laken Riley, 22, was found Thursday after a friend reported her missing when she didn't return from a jog that morning within an area of the University of Georgia consisting of wooded trails . Riley was a University of Georgia graduate studying nursing at another school. University Police Chief Jeff Clark told reporters that she had suffered "visible injuries" and died of blunt force trauma.

A suspect was identified Friday as Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, and was booked in the Clarke County Jail on several charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery and concealing the death of another.

Laken Riley, left, with Bianca Tiller, her former roommate during freshman year at University of Georgia.

Clark said there was no specific motive for the attack, and described Riley's killing as a "crime of opportunity." Ibarra did not attend the university and is an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, his status prompting Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to publicly fault the Biden administration for its immigration policies.

Other Republican lawmakers in Georgia have echoed Kemp's comments, while some Democrats said connecting Riley's death with border security is a "cheap" political tactic.

Monteverde said that "whoever the suspect is is irrelevant to the fact that UGA needs to enhance their safety and security on campus."

Violence against college students has escalated this month with the fatal shooting of two people at a University of Colorado Colorado Springs dorm room and the strangulation of a freshman in a dorm at Campbellsville University in Kentucky. In both cases, authorities arrested fellow students in connection with the deaths.

While the circumstances surrounding each case are different, Lynn Gainous, a SafeD Athens co-founder, said it's a wake-up call for all universities to assess whether they have enough security measures and programs in place to combat serious crimes.

"It's really, really devastating to hear that maybe something could have been done to prevent this," Gainous said of Riley's killing.

Even at the University of Georgia, where police say the majority of reported crimes involve "minor theft" of personal property, students have not been immune from fears of greater violence. This month, a 19-year-old student was reportedly confronted on campus by an armed robber who threatened to shoot her if she didn't turn over her phone. A suspect was quickly arrested after the student called university police for help, a university spokesman said in a statement Sunday.

"The numerous security cameras we have installed in the area recorded what happened, which has significantly aided the investigation," spokesman James Hataway said.

In addition, the university said it has invested $16 million in security protocols, including improving its network of security cameras, hiring more police, creating a nightly ride-share program and launching its UGA Safe app , which has a mobile blue-light feature.

University officials said the administration would meet with law enforcement this week to determine what else can be done, on top of moving ahead with improving outdoor lighting and security cameras around campus.

"We are committed to doing even more," the school said.

But some University of Georgia students say they'd like to see visible safety patrols, specifically at night, and the return of blue-light phone towers that would give them peace of mind.

The university was one of the first campuses to install blue lights in the 1980s, but they were removed in 2004 because the upgrade of the call boxes from analog to digital was deemed too costly and the school said too few people used them.

Students Sanjana Gowda, 19, and Anavi Hebbar-Shah, 18, said they are signing onto the online petition asking for blue lights and they're even carrying pepper spray on campus.

"It's like it's always there in the back of your mind," Gowda, clutching a key chain that includes her pepper spray and a whistle, said of last week's attack. "This happened in broad daylight on campus — somewhere that I go pretty frequently, too."

"It's just really disappointing that this stuff has to happen," Hebbar-Shah added. "And then, it just happens frequently. And then it just keeps happening."
