  • Trips cannot be scheduled on dates which are half days for any grade.
  • Trips are between October and June of the school year.
  • Trips are within the five boroughs of New York City.
  • All requests are received by OPT at least two weeks before the trip date.
  • All assigned trips are confirmed with the bus company dispatcher one to three days before the scheduled trip.

Are the field trips interactive?

Student experiences at the Museum of the City of New York are driven by inquiry, dialogue, and hands-on activities. Educators will use interactive techniques to encourage active learning and student participation.

How many students and chaperones can attend a field trip?

Each field trip accommodates a maximum of 35 students and six adults. For groups with more than 35 students, you may request multiple simultaneous field trips in different spaces. The Museum asks that you assign at least one adult to every ten students.

Is there a place where students can eat lunch?

The Museum  does not have any eating facilities – please plan accordingly!

The Museum is located across the street from Central Park’s Conservatory Garden. Weather permitting, the Museum’s Fifth Avenue terrace may be available for seating on a first-come, first-served basis. The Museum  does not accept  food deliveries for groups sent to the Museum.

How much does each field trip cost?

Each Field Trip costs $175.00 as a flat rate for a maximum of 35 students and six adults.

How do I pay for the Field Trip?

The Museum accepts cash, check, credit card, and purchase orders (Vendor Code MUS015000)

Checks made payable to the Museum of the City of New York may be sent to the following address:

Museum of the City of New York Attn: Field Trips 1220 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10029

Field Trip payments are  not refundable .

What is the cancellation policy?

Groups that cannot make their visit must cancel by e-mail with at least two weeks’ notice or they will not be able to reschedule. Because our educators are coming in specifically for your Field Trip, more than one cancellation will prohibit the entire school from scheduling any future group reservations for the rest of the school year.  All cancellation notices and rescheduling requests must e-mailed to  [email protected] .

What are the directions to the Museum?

  • The Museum of the City of New York is located at 1220 Fifth Avenue, between 103rd and 104th Streets.
  • By bus: M1, M3, M4, or M106 to 104th street, M2 to 101st Street.
  • By subway: Lexington Avenue #6 train to 103rd Street, walk three blocks west, or #2 or #3 train to 110th Street, walk one block east to Fifth Avenue, then south to 104th Street.

Where should my group enter the Museum and check in?

The Education Entrance is on 104th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenue. Ramp access is available at the 104th Street entrance.

Upon arrival, you will be asked to  check in  with a Visitor Services staff person. This will involve paying any outstanding balance and providing the final attendance for your group.

What are the accessibility accommodations at the Museum?

Ramp access is available at the 104th Street entrance, around the corner from Fifth Avenue.

What time should groups arrive before their scheduled field trip?

Due to the high volume of Field Trips occurring each day, we must adhere to the scheduled start times for each program and  do not have a space  to accommodate groups arriving more than 15 minutes early.

If a school books multiple programs with staggered start times, each class is  expected to arrive separately at their scheduled program start time .

Please note :  Each field trip experience is  designed to be "site specific" -  your Educator will lead your field trip in the exhibition or classroom space reserved for the program you have chosen .  We do not have availability for groups to self-guide in the Museum before or after their scheduled Field Trip, due to the high volume of Field Trip groups the Museum sees each day.

What happens if my group is late?

If your group is running late, please e-mail  [email protected]   or call 917.492.3334 immediately. Your Field Trip may be shortened accordingly.

Are the Museum’s programs accessible for all types of learners?

The Museum welcomes students of all needs and abilities. When completing the  Field Trip Request Form , please describe your students' needs so we can best prepare for your students. Any information you can provide is appreciated and will be shared with your Museum Educator.

What is the difference between Gallery Programs and History Labs?

Gallery Programs provide 60-minute interactive tours in the Museum’s exhibitions where students will see artifacts, art, and multimedia presentation about New York. History Labs provide 75-minute hands-on experiences in the  Museum’s classroom spaces  that are specially designed for elementary school students, encouraging project-based and multi-modal learning.

Are there pre- and post-visit curriculum materials available for classroom use?

We encourage teachers to visit the Museum on their own before their Field Trip. Teachers always receive free individual admission to the Museum and a 15% discount in the Museum Shops with ID.

The Museum will provide all materials for your Field Trip.

Newtown Creek Alliance’s Education Programs

Newtown Creek Alliance provides STEM based, interactive, environmental programs on a variety of topics grounded in the history and ecology of Newtown Creek and its surrounding watershed.

Programs are booked through our online portal and enrollment is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have questions please reach out to [email protected]

Newtown Creek offers four different programs that take place in our two educational spaces, Kingsland Wildflowers and Queens Landing . Select a program below to learn more about the program and its location.

In New York State, schools and youth organizations have opportunities to take students/participants on field trips. Most field trips are beneficial and a great learning experience. They enhance the lessons being taught in a regular classroom or within the context of the organization. Unfortunately, a few have ended in disaster. Anytime a large group of youth are in a public forum there is a potential for problems. Experience has shown that:

  • Youths can get separated from the group and lost;
  • Medical emergencies occur;
  • Bus accidents can happen;
  • Teachers/leaders and/or adult chaperones can be injured and unable to assist emergency personnel in identifying students who are injured, or
  • Youths may go with a stranger because the adult said they were on a field trip.

To assist you in your efforts to prevent problems, the New York State Police has developed a Field Trip Attendance System. It is available for schools and organizations which may not have a system in place or, as supplemental material for those that do. The system includes a Field Trip Attendance Sheet and color-coded, numbered Identification Tags.

The New York State Police also have a Child Abduction Prevention program called Step Away for Safety that can be presented to students a few weeks prior to their outing. The program can requested by completing a Presenter Request Letter and forwarding it to your local State Police Troop Headquarters.

To reinforce your awareness of this topic and to examine the materials involved, you may view the Field Trip Attendance System materials on the State Police website
