A wonderful trip! The guide on the boat was both entertaining and knowledgeable. Great opportunity to take some wonderful photographs.

Enjoyed our boat ride out and back as well as walking some trails around the headquarters. Need to add another 5-10 minutes to the stop at Spirit Island. Seemed like we were rushed. Maligne Canyon on the way back to Jasper was a perfect way to complete the trip!

The Maligne Lake Cruise shouldn't be missed. magnificent scenery..... One piece of advice book your cruise ahead, boats were completely booked when we arrived. It's a long beautiful drive out to the lake but knowing your cruise time ahead reduces stress and who needs that when traveling.... Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. If your in Jasper you've got to go!!!

Great cruise, the scenes was beyond belief! So beautiful, and the guides were very informative. highly recommend.

Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island

Is taking a Malign Lake cruise worth it? Maligne Lake and Spirit Island are definitely bucket list-worthy destinations for any trip to Jasper National Park.

The breathtaking mountains, turquoise glacial-fed lake and tree-lined island make it one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies. And in our opinion, one of the best ways to experience these incredible vistas is to take a Maligne Lake cruise.

In fact, our Maligne Lake Cruise ended up being one of the highlights of our trip to Jasper! The cruise was very family-friendly, just the right amount of time, and we were able to learn so much about the area from our knowledgeable guides.

So, yes! Taking a Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island is definitely worth it if you are visiting Jasper National Park.

🚢 Looking for the best Maligne Lake and Spirit Island Cruise? Jasper National Park Tour: Maligne Valley, Medicine Lake and Spirit Island is the best cruise option with over 300 stellar reviews! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

On the fence about whether or not to take the Maligne Lake Cruise while visiting Jasper? We cover everything there is to know about the experience, and why you need to add it to your Alberta bucket list.

Where is Maligne Lake?

Maligne Lake is located in Jasper National Park, approximately one hour from the Jasper townsite. At nearly 23km, Maligne Lake is the longest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies and the second-largest glacier-fed lake in the world.

How Do You Pronounce Maligne?

Thought to come from the French word for malignant or malicious, Maligne is pronounced  MAH-LEEN  (not ‘Malig-nee’ or ‘Ma-line’). It is believed that the lake was given its name due to the turbulent river that flows from the lake and through the canyon and mountains.

It is also possible that early French traders gave the river and lake its name, due to the river’s treacherous confluence (or meeting) with the Athabasca River.

How Long is the Maligne Lake cruise?

There are two Maligne Lake cruise options to choose from. The 1.5-hour Classic Cruise includes 15 minutes of free time at the world-famous Spirit Island.

If you decide to go with the Premium Cruise, it is 2 hours in length and allows for 30 minutes of free time at Spirit Island. There is also a brief stop at Pincushion Bay to soak in the incredible views.

The cruises are popular, especially during the peak season. Our recommendation is to make your reservations online as soon as possible, as dates often sell out quickly.

The Drive Up To Maligne Lake

If you are heading to Maligne Lake from the Jasper townsite, you are looking at just under a 1-hour drive. The route is quite scenic, taking you through lush forests and along Medicine Lake.

The drive is very straightforward. When you leave Jasper, take Highway 16 east for about 3 km and then take the turnoff for Maligne Lake Road.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-river

Once you cross the iron bridge over the Athabasca River, stay to the left at the fork in the road. Follow the road until you reach the Maligne Lake parking area, which is pretty hard to miss.

Our advice is to be aware of the speed limit and take it slow.

Expect To See Some Wildlife

Jasper National Park is filled with a variety of wildlife including caribou, elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bears, and wolves, as well as many smaller creatures like marmots and pikas.

And the drive along Maligne Lake road is an awesome opportunity for wildlife sightings.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Animal-sighting-Big-Horned-Sheep

In fact, chances are pretty good you are going to run into an “animal jam” on the way to Maligne Lake.

An Animal Jam is where wildlife is either blocking the road and causing traffic to come to a stand-still or, there are people slowing down to look at wildlife at the side of the road, causing a slow-down.

We lost count after seeing about 20 moose of various sizes, and several big-horned sheep on our trip to Maligne Lake.

Our advice is to give yourself extra time to get to your cruise (at least 1 – 1.5 hours if coming from Jasper), just in case you get stuck in traffic.

Things-to-do-in-Jasper-Moose-in-National-Park

And don’t forget to show these amazing animals the respect that they deserve. Give them plenty of space, stay in your car, and most importantly, DO NOT FEED the animals!

It is not safe, will make the animal sick, could get them killed, AND you can earn yourself an eye-watering fine if you are caught!

Arriving at Maligne Lake And Heading To The Dock

When you reach the Maligne Lake area, the first public parking lot is to the left, where you will find plenty of free parking. From the lot, follow the short trail through the forest to Maligne Lake.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Parks-Canada-sign

The trail will take you to the ticket office, boathouse, Lakehouse, and Historic Chalet. Head straight down to the docks, where staff will be waiting to check you in for your cruise.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Ticket-booth

It is recommended that you arrive at least half-hour before your cruise departure.

The Boat Ride

The boats used for the Maligne Lake cruises are on the smaller side. Inside, you will find two rows of bench seating, which accommodate 3-4 people per bench.

Unfortunately, this means that not everyone will get a window seat. So if sitting at the window is important to you, we suggest lining up early.

There are no strollers allowed on the boats. So families travelling with young children will either need to use a carrier or decide if the kids can manage without.

On the upside, there really isn’t much walking to do once you get to Spirit Island anyway.

The boats are completely enclosed, with fairly large windows, and are fully heated for days that are chilly.

There is also an outdoor deck at the back of the boat where you can feel the wind in your hair as you soak in the scenery.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-on-the-boat

But just a heads up, only a few people are allowed on the deck at a time. And the downside to standing outside is you will miss the commentary given by the awesome guides, as there are no outdoor speakers.

Sit back and enjoy the ride as the knowledgeable guides give you a little background on the history of Maligne Lake, as well as enlighten you on its geology, wildlife, weather, flora and fauna.

Learn how Mary Schäffer, a wealthy Quaker and artist from Philadelphia, received a map in 1907 from an Indigenous guide named Samson Beaver.

In 1908, Mary then set out on an expedition from Banff, becoming the first European to explore the Maligne Lake and valley area.

If Lake Louise is a pearl, Maligne is the entire pearl necklace. Mary Schäffer

Spirit Island

It will take approximately 30 minutes to arrive at Spirit Island, which is the turnaround point of the cruise. Passengers are then allowed to disembark and explore the area on their own.

Visitors can the short path which forms a loop from the docks to the viewing points overlooking Spirit Island.

The path is uneven at times, with many rocks sticking out of the ground. This may present a challenge to people with mobility issues.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Spirit-Island-walking-path

Spirit Island is actually a peninsula with a small grove of trees on it. It only becomes a true island for a few days in the spring when the melting snow and heavy rains cause the water level to rise.

Spirit Island is surrounded by emerald waters and is flanked on three sides by a ring of impressive peaks and glaciers forming a “box canyon” – a narrow canyon with a flat bottom and vertical walls.

🚢 Fun Fact: The colour of the water is different at Spirit Island compared to where cruises depart at the Maligne Lake docks. The water seems to change from turquoise to emerald green the further south on the lake you travel. This is due to the fact that the closer you get to glaciers, the higher the concentration of rock flour from the glaciers can be found in the water.

Will I Get Wet on the Cruise?

For the most part, the answer is ‘no’. The boats used for the cruise are covered. There may be a bit of water spray if the windows are open when the boat picks up speed, or if you are standing outside on the deck.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Spirit-Island-upper-view-point

There are only two ways to reach Spirit Island and they are both by boat. Most visitors to Spirit Island will arrive on a guided cruise tour. The other way to reach the island is by personal watercraft such as a canoe or kayak.

Just be advised, personal motorized boats are not allowed on Maligne Lake. Since Spirit Island is located approximately 14 km from the docks at Home Bay, it will be hard to get there on your own. Paddling can take about four hours each way!

Things-to-do-in-Jasper-Boat-at-Spirit-Island

The island is considered a spiritual place for the Stoney Nakoda First Nation , who believe mountains are physical representations of their ancestors.

And because Spirit Island is surrounded on three sides by the same mountain range, this very rare phenomenon makes it particularly significant to the Stoney people.

Today, the box canyon is referred to as the “Hall of Gods.”

Can You Walk on Spirit Island?

Because the Island is of spiritual significance to the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, and to preserve the area in its natural state, walking onto the island is not permitted out of respect.

When is the Best Time to Take a Maligne Lake Cruise?

The best time to visit Lake Maligne and Spirit Island is from mid-June to late October. This is when Maligne Lake has thawed from the winter and the boat cruises are able to operate.

If you are wondering when is the best time to visit the island from a photography standpoint, aim for late afternoons.

During the summer, the sun moves west across the sky and will shine almost straight down on the island around 4 pm.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Spirit-Island-lower-view-point

This magic hour gives the best photo results. But considering Spirit Island is one of the most beautiful and scenic spots in Alberta, we are pretty sure your photos will be stunning no matter what time of day you take them!

🚢 Fun Fact: Apple used an image of Spirit Island when they launched the 2014 iPad model to showcase its heightened photography capabilities.

What Amenities Are Available at Maligne Lake?

You can find restrooms, gift shops, and places to grab a bite when you arrive at Maligne Lake for your cruise. However, once you are on the boat, or at Spirit Island, these amenities become extremely limited.

Restaurants

You will find three food options when you arrive at Maligne Lake. These restaurants only operate seasonally, so you may want to check their availability if you are heading there during the shoulder seasons.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Waffle-Hut

Your options include The Lakehouse which serves grab-and-go style food, the Waffle Hut which offers coffee and decadent waffle options, and the View , which is the outdoor lakeside patio restaurant with great a la cart options.

Head into The Lakehouse where you will find a pretty large gift shop, along with the restaurant.

You will be able to find all the usual souvenirs, along with some really unique pieces by local indigenous artists.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Inside-gift-shop

Restrooms are available in the parking lot, as well as in the Lakehouse and Waffle Hut. Your best bet is to go before your cruise, as there are no facilities on the boat itself.

Once you reach Spirit Island, you will find environmentally friendly pit toilets there. But seeing as you are only on the island for a very short time, you wouldn’t want to waste it waiting to use the potty!

Other Things to Do at Maligne Lake

Aside from taking a cruise, there are plenty of other great things to do at Maligne Lake. In fact, the lake is one of the most popular recreational areas in Jasper National Park.

Rent a Boat

If you happen to be visiting during the summer months, you can choose to rent canoes, rowboats, Stand Up Paddle Boards and kayaks, for an adventure on the water.

The boathouse by the main docks rents out boats by the hour or the full day.

Boats are rented on a first-come-first-serve basis so the best chance to secure a rental is to arrive early in the morning or late in the evening.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-hiking-trail-signs

Bald Hills Loop

Length:  15 km return loop Duration:  6.5 – 8.0 hours Elevation Gain : 780 meters Difficulty : Difficult Best Time To Go:   All Year

If you are looking for a longer day hike option near Maligne Lake, then the Bald Hills Loop is a perfect choice.

It is pretty steep and demanding at points, so be sure to pack the right gear and bring enough water. Of course, this hike rewards you for your efforts with absolutely amazing views of the mountains, glaciers and lake.

Can You Swim in Maligne Lake?

Swimming in Maligne Lake is allowed, but you do so at your own risk. Even though the gorgeous blue waters look really tempting, the glacier-fed lake remains extremely cold for swimming, even in the hot summer months.

Can You Fish at Maligne Lake?

Fishing on Maligne Lake is allowed, provided you have a Park pass and fishing permit, and that you are aware of current regulations.

This means you need to know the fishing limits, as well as be able to identify the various fish within the park.

There is no live bait fishing allowed in the park. Kids under the age of 16 are allowed to fish on their accompanied pass, but just be aware, their catch is included within the permit holders’ daily limit.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Sampson-Narrows

A daily fishing permit from Parks Canada will cost you $9.80 per person. You can also opt for an annual permit which will cost $34.30.

Maligne Lake and Spirit Island in Jasper • All You NEED to Know

Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is a glacial lake in Jasper that is just a 45-minute drive from the town of Jasper along the stunning Maligne Lake Rd. It is one of the most serene lakes in all of the Canadian Rockies and is prized for its astounding natural splendor.

It’s well worth a visit for anyone visiting the Canadian Rockies, and is a must-stop if you’re in Jasper for a few days. Here’s everything you need to know about traveling to Maligne Lake and Spirit Island.

All You Need to Know About Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is a premier destination in the Canadian Rockies for scenic beauty. It’s the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies and a must for any visitor to Jasper National Park .

Its serene natural beauty and picturesque views are prized around the world. The grandeur of the lake as countless glaciers run off into the lake below from the Hall of Gods is beyond compare. On a sunny day, the waters of Maligne Lake sparkle a dazzling cerulean blue.

maligne lake

Maligne Lake stretches from the boat docks for 22km past the famous Spirit Island to the base of the Coronet Glacier. Spirit Island is a small peninsula island that sits 14 kilometers from the docks at Home Bay.

The small island is now world-famous for its resplendent scene that is treasured around the world. It feels more like the landscape of a dream than reality.

What Wildlife Can You See at Maligne Lake?

spirit island cruise maligne lake

An expansive forest of pine and spruce trees flank Maligne Lake. It makes for a wonderful habitat for many wildlife including mule deer, wolves, elk, caribou, bears, moose, and mountain sheep.

The waters also draw in birdlife that includes Bald Eagles, Osprey, and Golden Eagles. That being said, don’t come expecting to see any or all of that wildlife — especially wolves or caribou.

Why is Maligne Lake so Blue/Emerald?

maligne lake

The blue waters of Maligne Lake vary as the water moves from the inflow to the outflow of the lake. This is due to the glacier sediment deposited at the lake’s start in a box canyon.

Melting glaciers run into the lake and deposit rock flour which in turn refracts the sunlight and produces the signature color. As the water flows out of the lake the rock flour settles and causes a shift in color from one end of the lake to the other. If you take a cruise on Maligne Lake you may notice that the further south on the lake you travel, the closer you get to glaciers, the more the lake shows off an emerald color.

maligne lake

There are a plethora of things to do around Maligne Lake all year round. In the summer, visitors can hike, canoe, fish, or hop on a tour boat. While the winter months are great for cross country skiing.

The gorgeous blue waters of Maligne Lake make look very tempting for a swim, but the glacier-fed lake remains cold for swimming year-round. While we haven’t taken a dip in Maligne we’ve been in many Jasper and Banff lakes and can attest to their temperature that at most reach a few degrees above freezing.

maligne lake

Even the drive to Maligne Lake is eye-watering as you drive from Athabasca Valley through Maligne Valley. From the townsite of Jasper it is roughly 45km and passes the worthwhile stops of Maligne Canyon and Medicine Lake, both are fed from the outflow of Maligne Lake.

There is no notable outflow from Medicine Lake as the water travels through underground caves before reemerging in dramatic fashion in Maligne Canyon.

Spirit Island Jasper Information

spirit island

Spirit Island is a small island that sits along the lakeshore of Maligne Lake in Alberta, Canada. It’s prized for its spectacular landscape and photos of the picturesque island circle around the globe for its idealistic landscape.

The island is surrounded by emerald blue glacier waters and flanked by staggering mountains that form a box canyon referred to as the “Hall of Gods.”

Most interesting enough is the vast majority of the year it is not an island as it is connected to the lakeshore . Spirit Island is a spiritual place for the Stoney Nakoda First Nation . Mountains are considered the physical representations of ancestors, and since the island is surrounded by the same mountain range it is immensely treasured.

How to Reach Spirit Island

There are only two ways to reach Spirit Island and they are both by boat. The vast majority of visitors to Spirit Island will visit the popular cruise tour with the Pursuit Collective. The boat ride is around 30 minutes and provides amazing views of the lake along with some history from a tour guide.

Personal Watercraft

The other way to reach Spirit Island is by personal watercraft such as a canoe or kayak. No internal combustion engines are allowed, but small electric trolling motors are permitted. Paddling can take up to 4-5 hours each way and is recommended for those with paddling experience.

Paddlers can choose from three campsites along the lakeshore to camp with the closest campsite at Fisherman’s Bay. These campsites require advance reservation and are very hard to get as they are extremely popular, especially Fisherman’s Bay in the summer. If you don’t have your own canoe or kayak to get to Spirit Island, you can rent one with Wild Current Outfitters.

Please don’t walk on Spirit Island as it holds significant cultural value for the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. The cruises do not allow any walking on the island but there is a nearby overlook for visitors to appreciate the breathtaking scenery and capture photos of the iconic location.

Maligne Lake Cruise

maligne lake cruise

One of the most popular activities on Maligne Lake is to hop on a Maligne Lake boat tour run by the Pursuit Collective. The hour and a half panoramic cruise heads to Spirit Island 14 km up the lake. It’s around a half-hour to the island where guests get 15 minutes off of the boat for photos before the return journey.

maligne lake

You’re guaranteed spectacular mountain vistas while you cruise across the cerulean water. You can buy individual tickets for the Maligne Lake Cruise, but for the best deal consider purchasing the Banff Jasper Collective’s Banff Explorer Pass that includes the Banff Gondola and the Icefields Experience.

We enjoyed Pursuit’s Classic Cruise tour to Spirit Island, but honestly felt very rushed with only 15 minutes on the island. Their Premium Cruise gives at extra 15 minutes of time on Spirit Island.

Advanced Purchase Pricing (CAD):

The Maligne Lake cruises run from 2024 dates: May 31* – October 13th.

  • Classic Cruise – $82/adult and $53.50/child
  • Premium Cruise – Cruise9/adult and $70.85/child
  • Pursuit Rewards Cruise (for Alberta locals): $66.00/adult and $42.90/child
  • Age 5 & Under – Free if sharing a seat with adult (but they still require a ticket)
  • Kids Go Free Early Bird! Receive one free child ticket for each paying adult on the 9 AM and 9:15 AM Classic Cruise.
  • Pursuit Pass Jasper (Columbia Icefield Adventure – including Skywalk and Maligne Lake Cruise)$160.00/adult and $104/ child

Maligne Lake Camping

spirit island cruise maligne lake

There are three campsites located on Maligne Lake. To get to them you will have to paddle yourself and your camping gear in. Though if you manage to score a campsite on one of these backcountry Jasper campgrounds in the summer consider yourself lucky, as they are very competitive.

  • Hidden Cove (4 camping sites): This is 4 km from the parking area and is great for novice paddlers and families who want to spend the night on Maligne Lake.
  • Fisherman’s Bay (8 camping sites): 13 km from the parking area. This is the closest campsite to Spirit Island. At 13 km it will likely take you a majority of the day to paddle here.
  • Coronet Creek (8 camping sites): 21.3 km from the parking area at the Southern end of Maligne Lake. Camp here and wake up to amazing views of Coronet Glacier.

When is the Best Time to Photograph Spirit Island

Maligne Lake - Spirit Island

Pursuit claims that the best time to photograph Maligne Lake is in the later afternoon as it gives you the best even light on Spirit Island. They even used to run a “ Through the Lens ” cruise three times a week, giving a 60 minute stop on Spirit Island guided by a photographer. *This is no longer offered*

While this may be the best time to photograph Spirit Island to the average visitor, the truly best time to photograph Spirit Island is at sunrise. This means you’ll need to be camping at one of the nearby campsites to catch the beauty of the first rays hitting the Hall of Gods.

Nevertheless, if you can’t score a camping reservation and paddle 14 km in for a photograph, we totally get it! Then the first cruise available in the morning, typically around 9am, or the last one of the day, are the best options.

The History of Maligne Lake

maligne lake

Maligne Lake’s original Indigenous name was “Chaba Imne” (Beaver Lake) who lived in Jasper. During the summer months, the Indigenous community frequently visited the lake for food gathering and hunting activities.

Known as the “Lake of Deep Waters” and the “Lake of Healing,” Chaba Imne held profound spiritual importance. Even today, First Nations individuals continue to visit the picturesque Spirit Island.

Mary Schäffer was a wealthy Quaker and artist from Philadelphia and was inspired to explore the Rockies in search of Chaba Imne after hearing about its beauty and wonders from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation people. She received a map in 1907 from Samson Beaver, an Indigenous guide and settler. Mary set out on an expedition from Banff and reached the lake and valley. She reached the lake in 1908 and explored the valley extensively.

maligne lake

Her writings and paintings about the lake are what would, in turn, bring more tourists to the area in the coming years. Mary was so taken by Maligne Lake’s natural beauty and said that “if Lake Louise is a pearl, Maligne is the entire pearl necklace.”

Boating on Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake Boathouse

The original boathouse built by Donald Philips in 1928 rents a number of canoes, kayaks, and rowboats. Taking a paddle on Maligne Lake is a wonderful activity to enjoy on a warm summer day. You can rent boats by the hour or the full day to make the most out of the backcountry offerings along the lakeshore.

maligne-lake-boathouse

Boats are reservable online and it’s best to arrive 30 minutes ahead of your scheduled time so you can sign waivers, get ready, and go over safety briefings. Boat rentals operate rain or shine so remember to take a look at the weather forecast before booking.

Pets are allowed on the boat rentals, though please prepare for them accordingly. The water is very cold, usually around 10 degrees Celsius in mid-summer. While humans are provided a PFD from the boathouse staff, pets are not.

Visitors can use their personal non-motorized watercraft on Maligne Lake.

I’ve already mentioned this above, but the most popular thing to do at Maligne Lake is enjoy a boat cruise to Spirit Island.

Kayak/Canoe/Stand Up Paddle

The Maligne Lake Boathouse rents out water devices so you can get out on the water during the summer!

Walk the Mary Schaffer Loop Trail

Walk the Mary Schaffer Loop Trail

This is an easy 3.2 trail with only 82 meters of elevation gain near Maligne Lake. It will loop you through some beautiful forests and starts and ends at Maligne Lake. It’s a great winter activity! This is the busiest trail near Maligne Lake so try to get on the trail early morning or late evening.

Walk the Moose Lake Loop

This is a similar trail at only 2.7 km, but has slightly more gain at 109 meters. The trail starts at Maligne Lake and gets you to the quiet Moose Lake!

Opal Hills Loop Trail

If you want a longer and more demanding hike near Maligne Lake, check out Opal Hills. At 7.9 km and 520 meters of gain, it’s rated as a hard hike. You’ll find it’s not traveled so often and will likely only pass a few other groups on the trail. It’s fantastic as a winter snowshoe, but also in the summer when you can get to the lake viewpoint.

Bald Hills Loop

At 15km and 780 meters of gain this a longer day hike option near Maligne Lake. It’s quite steep and demanding at points so make sure you pack the right gear and enough water. Your effort for this hike will be rewarded at the end with absolutely amazing views.

How to Get to Maligne Lake?

Jasper in winter

Maligne Lake is roughly 45km from the Town of Jasper. To get there, get on the Yellowhead Hwy and take a right on Maligne Lake Rd and continue on this pretty much the whole way till you get to Maligne Lake.

Maligne-Lake-Road

If you have the time, I suggest stopping at Maligne Canyon, as it’s a great beginner-friendly Jasper hike . And definitely don’t miss Medicine Lake on your way in. Keep your eyes out for moose, sheep, and elk – Maligne Lake Road is one of the most well-known places to see wildlife in the park!

You’ll know you’ve reached Maligne Lake when you get to the end of the road. There are multiple big parking areas to park at, as well as outhouses, and a whole dining and cafe area to enjoy the sunshine and views.

Where to Stay in Jasper National Park

canoeing in jasper

One of the best places to stay in Jasper is the Fairmont Park Lodge . We enjoyed one of their Lakeview rooms for three nights and had a fantastic time. The Fairmont sits right on Lake Beauvert, which in my opinion, is one of the most stunning lakes I have seen in Jasper.

spirit island cruise maligne lake

The Fairmont is comfortable and spread out. It’s not your standard hotel, but instead, there are plenty of individual cabins, so you can easily keep your distance from other guests. There’s a heated pool to enjoy in the winter and summer. They also have a boathouse where you can rent kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.

There are a few restaurants on-site, which are all delicious! Make sure to try Orso Trattoria for a nice night out.

Thank you so much for writing everything in detail

We have very much appreciated your blog and have gained much knowledge from it. We are planning our once in a life time trip to Banff and Jasper next week (August 29 – September 5), staying in Canmore. We are wondering what your thoughts are concerning the wildfire haze? Would we be wise to postpone our trip to next summer, or do you feel we would still be able to experience the beauty of the area?

Wildfire haze can change day by day, and even hour by hour, so it’s near impossible to know what will happen next week. It’s best to check forecasts on the FireSmoke.ca website at https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/ . It’s only really semi accurate up to 24 hours in advance. Other than that you can look at all the webcams around the park to see what the air looks like. The best ones are the Lake Louise ski resort webcam, downtown Canmore webcam, Town of Banff webcam, and Emerald Lake webcam.

On my way to the lake, I was lucky enough to see a bull moose and his mate and mule deer. This is an absolutely incredible place to see wildlife and spectacular scenery. Jared was the captain and Mel was the hostess. She was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the area and gave us a lot of info about the history of the lake and area and the wildlife. The scenery was breathtaking. I highly recommend this cruise. When they’re open there’s a deli and gift shop nearby. Since I had rushed to get to the cruise on time, I did not have my lunch so it was a good place to get a good quick bite at a reasonable cost. I did not get to shop at the gift shop, unfortunately. I’ve been visiting Jasper National Park ever since I was a kid, but had never got around to enjoying one of the park’s most iconic experiences- the Maligne Lake cruise to Spirit Island.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

I can honestly say, I saved the best for last!

The scenery I saw during the Maligne Lake cruise epitomized everything I love about Jasper- rocky mountain peaks, hanging glaciers, peaceful forests, and azure coloured lakes. The views got better and better the further along we cruised, climaxing with a stop at the famous Spirit Island.

Toss in a warm, sunny day in early September, and it made for a perfect, unforgettable boat cruise in Jasper National Park. Here’s a look at our afternoon on Maligne Lake and enjoyable cruise to Spirit Island!

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise Review and Tips- Jasper National Park, Canada

Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island

After a nice picnic on the shore of Maligne Lake, we lined up at the dock near the Maligne Lake boathouse, excited to board the day’s last cruise to Spirit Island.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

Even though we bought our tickets in advance, I wanted to get there early so I could secure a window seat on the small boat. I wasn’t the only one who had that idea though, and people started lining up as soon as the previous boat departed.

Lucky for me, I got the last window seat and as we sailed away from Home Bay, I readied my camera for all the beautiful alpine scenery we’d see during our boat tour of Maligne Lake.

travelyesplease.com | Scenic Cruise on Maligne Lake - Jasper National Park, Canada

Soon into our journey, the view opened up to a part of the lake I hadn’t seen before. Since Maligne Lake is so long and narrow, it’s hard to perceive the magnitude of its beauty from the boathouse. As I was quickly finding out, a boat is the best way to see Maligne Lake.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise Review and Tips- Jasper National Park, Canada

As our cruise on Maligne Lake continued on, our guide pointed out notable landmarks, all the while sharing interesting facts and stories about Maligne Lake.

We learned about the explorations of Mary Schäffer, who “discovered” the lake after following a map drawn for her by Stoney tribesman Samson Beaver. We heard anecdotes about climbers summiting Leah Peak and even got to see some fossilized coral reef that was brought down from the mountain. I also learned that the mountains running alongside Maligne Lake were called the Queen Elizabeth Ranges, named in honour of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

Before I knew it, our little blue boat was gliding into the Samson Narrows, one of the prettiest sections of Maligne Lake. There were a few small islands, a quiet bay, and backcountry campground, but Spirit Island was still out of view.

travelyesplease.com | Scenic Cruise on Maligne Lake - Jasper National Park, Canada

As gorgeous as the scenery along Maligne Lake was, it didn’t distract me from my excitement to get to Spirit Island. I had long admired photographs of this renowned spot and desperately hoped it lived up to my high expectations.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise Review and Tips- Jasper National Park, Canada

As soon as we docked beside Spirit Island, I eagerly made my way down the short nature trail.

I was awestruck by the landscape surrounding me. Rocky mountains framed the lakeside, while Spirit Island and its distinctive sole cluster of trees pointed towards the far end of Maligne Lake.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

It was a work of art incomparable to any painting or photograph. I felt my breath quicken, then calm, as I gazed at Spirit Island, fully absorbing the moment.

travelyesplease.com | Visiting Spirit Island and Maligne Lake- One of Jasper National Park's Most Scenic Locations

I didn’t want to look away or turn my back, but was motivated to continue up the trail knowing that a different vantage point awaited me.

Once I arrived at the viewing platform, which was higher than the shore below, I re-experienced the wonder I felt just a few short moments ago. This slightly different perspective brought on a new wave of emotions and I stood there silently thanking Mother Nature for the perfect light and weather conditions for viewing Spirit Island.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

Sadly, our time at Spirit Island was way too short, just 15 minutes, and soon we were being called back to the boat. It would have been nice to sit longer with the view, considering Spirit Island is the gem of Maligne Lake.

Back on the boat, I was disappointed to be leaving so soon, but didn’t let that taint the experience I had looked forward to for so long. Instead, we stood smiling on the back of the boat, bathed in warm sunlight, and watched one of the best views in the Canadian Rockies disappear from sight.

Final Thoughts About the Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island

I’ve travelled to many far-off places but the view of Spirit Island and Maligne Lake is truly one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen. How lucky that it’s only a 4 hour drive from my home!

travelyesplease.com | Visiting Spirit Island and Maligne Lake- One of Jasper National Park's Most Scenic Locations

Although the highlight of our afternoon was seeing Spirit Island, the cruise on Maligne Lake was just as enjoyable, being both informative and scenic.

I especially loved the glaciers and seeing the water change colour from blue to turquoise the further down the lake we got. It was also interesting to see how one side of the lake had rugged, rocky mountains, while the other side had mountains that were more rolling and smooth.

spirit island cruise maligne lake

One downside of the Maligne Lake cruise is that the time at Spirit Island is way too rushed. With only 15 minutes, it was just enough time to walk to the Spirit Island viewpoint, take some photos, then rush down the rest of the trail back to the boat. At least the boat was small, so the island wasn’t being bombarded with people.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

I think if we had the time and desire, it would have been more rewarding to canoe or kayak to Spirit Island, but at 28 km round trip, that’s a pretty ambitious paddle for one day!

Overall, I’m very happy with our cruise on Maligne Lake and Spirit Island was just as perfect as I hoped it would be. This experience is not only a must-do in Jasper National Park , it should be included as part of larger road trip in the Canadian Rockies.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About the Maligne Lake Cruise and Spirit Island

How long is the Maligne Lake cruise?

The classic sightseeing cruise on Maligne Lake is 90 minutes long. Premium cruises are 2 hours.

How far is Spirit Island from the Maligne Lake boathouse?

Spirit Island is 14 km (9 mi) from the boathouse.

Can you walk on Spirit Island?

No, you can’t set foot on Spirit Island because it’s considered a sacred place. The island can be viewed from a nature trail on the shoreline across from it.

Can you hike to Spirit Island?

No, Spirit Island can only be reached by boat. To get to Spirit Island, you can take the sightseeing cruise on Maligne Lake or rent a canoe. Parks Canada does not allow private motorized boats on Maligne Lake.

Why is it named Spirit Island?

First off, the name is a bit of a misnomer because it’s not actually an island, but rather a peninsula. It only appears to be an island when the water levels of the lake are high. Our guide told us that no one knows for sure where the name came from.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise Review and Tips- Jasper National Park, Canada

Tips for the Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island

Location: Maligne Lake is located in Jasper National Park at the end of Maligne Lake Road. It’s about a 50 minute drive from the Jasper townsite. You may want to give yourself more time though since Maligne Lake Road has some scenic viewpoints and is one of the best places to see wildlife in Jasper .

  • The boats to Spirit Island leave from the docks across from the Maligne Lake boathouse.

Dates of Operation: The Maligne Lake boat tours usually start near the end of May or early June, depending on when the lake thaws, and run into the first week of October.

Maligne Lake Cruise Options: There are a few different cruise options for Maligne Lake ranging from 1.5- 2 hours.

  • We did the 1.5 hour Classic Cruise that includes a boat ride to Spirit Island and back, on-board commentary from a guide, and 15 minutes free time at Spirit Island.
  • The 2 hour option is the Premium Cruise which is basically just an extended version of the classic tour (includes more time on the lake and 30 minutes at Spirit Island).
  • I personally don’t think the 2 hour option would be worth the added expense (which is why I didn’t book it), even though I wanted more time at the island. It’s quite the jump in price and more time on the lake isn’t really needed.

Best Time to Photograph Spirit Island : Of course there’s no guarantee of good light (or weather) at certain times of day, but generally in late afternoon/early evening the sun shines softly on Spirit Island.

  • We did the 4:00 pm cruise in early September and had gorgeous light at Spirit Island. I simply looked at what time the photography tour leaves on days it runs, since that should be scheduled at the optimal time for taking pictures, and booked the Classic Cruise that departed at the same time. It worked out wonderfully for us! (Note: A photography cruise is no longer offered).

Boats and the On-Board Experience: The boats that go to Spirit Island are on the smaller side (not big catamarans). There is bench seating for 3-4 people on each side, so not everyone will be able to sit near a window. For that reason, I recommend lining up as early as possible so you can get a window seat.

  • There is an area at the back of the boat where you can stand outside, but it is very small and only a few people are allowed out there at a time. You also can’t hear the commentary outside.

Maligne Lake Cruise Tickets: I recommend booking tickets in advance, especially in high-season of July and August. You can buy your tickets direct with the tour operator (online or at their ticket office), or book online through a trusted third party here .

  • At the time of publishing, Alberta residents get a cheaper rate when booking direct.

Services at Maligne Lake: At Maligne Lake there is a cafe, restaurant, gift shop, and place to rent canoes and kayaks.

Information was updated January 2024, but can change without notice. Please confirm directly with service providers.

Getting there & stops along the way.

To get to Maligne Lake, you will be traveling 48km southeast of the town of Jasper on Maligne Lake Road. This is one of the most incredible drives in the province for several reasons. First of all, you have an extremely high chance of seeing wildlife. Bears, moose, elk, and deer frequent the area and are most commonly seen at dawn and dusk.

September 16, 2022 UPDATE: Power has been fully restored to the town of Jasper following the Chetamon wildfire. Restaurants and businesses have re-opened and the community is eager to share this special season with visitors!

NOTE: Please do not get out of your vehicles or attempt to approach any wildlife. Giving them their space and admiring them from afar is the safest move for them, for you, and for future human encounters.

Secondly, the scenic mountain views around every corner are absolutely phenomenal! There are numerous spots to pull off and take in your surroundings, go for a walk, or have a picnic with a view. If you are looking for a relatively easy and rewarding hike, we would highly recommend stopping in at Maligne Canyon.

spirit island cruise maligne lake

Maligne Canyon is the deepest canyon in Jasper National Park and an awesome place to explore! The trail, accessible to hikers of all abilities, features five bridges built across different areas of the canyon. The waterfalls and winding river below reach a depth of more than 50 meters in certain areas. In total, this hike is 3.4km with 118m of elevation gain. It is paved the whole way and can get busy, so we recommend going early!

In the same parking lot, you will find Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen. Depending on what time you leave, this is a great place to stop in for a meal before or after your cruise. David and I always make a point of dining at the Wilderness Kitchen when we’re in Jasper. Trust us, you will not be disappointed.

A little further down the road, you will find Medicine Lake. Filled with water from Maligne Lake, Medicine Lake actually feed’s Maligne Canyon via an underground limestone cave system. Because of these subterranean springs, Medicine lake will simply “vanish” at certain times of the year! It is quite a phenomenon. The first parking area offers the best views of the lake and we would highly recommend walking along the shore if you have the time.

The Maligne Lake Cruise

The Maligne Lake Cruise by Pursuit is actually one of our favorite tours in all of the Canadian Rockies. There are a few reasons for that, but here’s the biggest:

They do an excellent job of keeping it quiet and secluded, despite how popular it is.

There are many tours that David and I will avoid or recommend trying on your own to ditch the crowds. This is not one of them! The small group sizes and spaced-out departure times ensure that you can enjoy the serenity of this magnificent area without it feeling busy or overcrowded.

As summer draws to a close and the first signs of fall appear in Jasper National Park, there’s rarely a vacancy in town. The power has returned and the beauty of the Canadian Rockies remains. Jasper is re-energized and ready to welcome visitors back!

Over this 1.5 hour tour, you will travel over halfway across Maligne Lake to one of the most photographed spots in all of Canada, Spirit Island. Tours start at 9 am daily and in our opinion, the earlier you can book, the better! Arriving early will typically give you the calmest water and the smallest crowds. It also significantly increases your chances of seeing wildlife. To book your tour in advance, click here.

After arriving at the lake, we grabbed a coffee from the gift shop and promptly boarded for our cruise. We were lucky enough to get the front seat, but you can enjoy the panoramic views from anywhere on the glass-enclosed boat. There were only about 25 people on our tour and there was plenty of space for everyone. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable, breaking the ice immediately and passing on a ton of valuable information for the duration of the journey.

One of my favorite parts of the tour was that as a passenger, you are free to move around as you please at any time. This includes the outdoor area on the back of the boat!

David and I spent a huge portion of the boat ride outside, taking in Maligne Lake and all of its glory. We really appreciated this because, as many of you know, being closer to nature and away from the crowd is very much our jam. The only time we were asked to come inside was when we docked the boat at Spirit Island.

Spirit Island, named by the Stoney Nation indigenous people for the experiences their ancestors had at this place centuries ago, is a tiny grove of trees and pristine nature separated from the mainland by an isthmus. Spirit Island becomes a true island for a few short days during the summer. -Pursuit Banff Jasper

The views from here are truly some of the most magical in all of Jasper. A short path from the dock brings you to numerous viewing areas from which you can admire Spirit Island and the serene mountain backdrop. The colour of the lake seems to get more and more incredible as the cruise goes on. The best part about our visit? We were the only boat there the entire time! It was quite possibly the most peaceful 15 minutes I have ever spent at a popular photo destination.

Things to do After Your Maligne Lake Cruise

Upon finishing your cruise, there are several options for what to do next. Moose Lake Loop and Mary Schaffer Loop are a few of the easy hikes in the area. If you are looking for something a little more challenging with incredible views, try Opal Hills Loop or Bald Hills.

If you’ve still got a desire to be out on the water, you can rent canoes from the Maligne Lake Boat House. They have a restaurant and gift shop near the dock if you are looking to grab a bite to eat! As I mentioned earlier, you could also stop into Maligne Canyon and The Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen for a hike and some lunch on your way back to Jasper.

This fall is the perfect time to explore the fleeting autumn vibes of this cozy mountain town before the snow begins to fall. Jasper’s must-do attractions, from the Maligne Lake Cruise to the Columbia Icefield Adventure, are still open as the warm season draws to a close.

We hope you enjoy your time in Jasper! Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comment below with your experience on the Maligne Lake Cruise. We`d love to hear from you!

History Of Maligne Lake

“Lake Louise is a pearl, Lake Maligne is a whole string of pearls.”

As with most lakes in the Canadian Rockies, Maligne Lake was already widely known among the local Indigenous population, but Maligne Lake was officially put on the map by explorer Mary Schaffer.

As with many lakes in the Canadian Rockies, Maligne Lake was already widely known among the local Indigenous population, but Maligne Lake was officially put on the map by explorer Mary Schaffer.

In 1907 Mary Schaffer, along with her companions Billy Warren and Sid Unwin, set off on an expedition to find Maligne Lake, known as Chaba Imne by the local indigenous people.

A year later the group found the lake with the help of a local Stoney man named Samson Beaver whose hand drawn map of the lake guided them to the shores of Maligne Lake.  Upon setting her eyes on the majestic shimmering blue lake, Mary Schaffer declared “Lake Louise is a pearl, Lake Maligne is a whole string of pearls”

How To Get To Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is located in Jasper National Park, which you can reach by driving the Icefields Parkway from Banff. The lake sits at the very end of Maligne Lake Road.

This road is one of the most scenic in Jasper National Park and you will want to spend some time here during your trip. While Maligne Lake is the top attraction here, there are plenty of things to see along this stretch of road. See below for other things to do in this area.

From Jasper town drive 4.5 kilometre until you reach the turn off for Maligne Lake road on the right. You’ll then turn left and continue on this road for about 44 kilometres until you reach the parking lot for Maligne Lake which is clearly signposted.

The Maligne Lake Boat House was built in 1928 by Donald "Curly" Philips.

Maligne Lake Boat Tour

Maligne Lake is not only one of the top places to visit Jasper, it’s one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies. At 22.5 kilometres long, Maligne Lake is one of the longest lakes in the Canadian Rockies and the second largest glacier-fed lake in the world.

The Maligne Lake boat tour is a great way to experience Maligne Lake & Spirit Island. It’s a great option for families or those with no canoeing experience who only have a few hours to experience the lake.

You’ll want to arrive early for your boat cruise. There are many things to see and do along the Maligne Lake Road that you may want to stop and see either before or after your boat tour.

If you have already purchased tickets ahead of time you should have your e-tickets ready to be scanned. Since there is no Wifi in the area, I would recommend downloading these onto your phone prior.

The boat tour departs from the north side of the lake just to the right of the Maligne Lake Boat House. You will want to snag a window seat for this tour – the views are out of this world! The lake opens up as you depart the docks and then draws in again as you approach  Samson Narrows.

If you are lucky you may even see Moose along the shores of Maligne Lake, when our evening tour departed there was a Moose way off in the distance snacking on the lakes vegetation.

During the tour our guides explained about the origins of Maligne Lake and the journey of Mary Schaffer. Throughout the duration of the tour you’ll be allowed to stand out at the back of the boat to really experience these breathtaking views.

Your tour boat will frequently stop, allowing you to get those picture perfect photographs. If you are taking the premium tour, the boat stops at Pincushion Bay and will slowly turn to give you fantastic views of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Samson, Mount Warren and Mount Unwin.

Hall of the gods at Spirit Island on Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park.

Stop at Spirit Island

The part of the cruise that I was most excited for, is the stop at Spirit Island. Spirit Island may be one of the most visited places in the Canadian Rockies, but oh my is it a magical place! Seeing this view in person is truly a bucket list moment.

Even with the motorized boats on the lake, the tour is organized in such a way that when you arrive at Spirit Island, the experience is still so serene.

There is a short boardwalk which wraps around the shoreline with a lookout view that perfectly frames Spirit Island. This is a great photo spot to capture Spirit Island.

Spirit Island sits in a box canyon that Mary Schaffer referred to as the “Hall of the Gods” because of its sheer beauty. This iconic Canadian Rockies landmark gained popularity after a photograph by Peter Gales was hung in New York’s Grand Central Station for Kodak’s Colorama Showcase in September of 1960. Since then Spirit Island has existed in the minds of adventurers everywhere.

Walking onto Spirit Island is prohibited as it is a sacred place for the local Stoney Nakoda people. They believe the mountains are physical representations of their ancestors.

According to First Nation mythology, Spirit Island was the meeting place of two young lovers from opposing tribes. The young girl confessed of her love to her father, the Chief, who banned her from ever returning to Spirit Island. The boy continued to return to the island in the hopes of seeing her again. He eventually died on the island where his spirit is said to wander for eternity.

How To Get To Spirit Island

Spirit Island is tucked away in a small cove on Maligne Lake and is only accessible by boat. There are a couple of options for getting to Spirit Island. The first involves renting a canoe and rowing 14km up the lake, and the other is a boat tour.

During my time in Jasper National Park I opted for the boat tour as I was short on time. However, if you do have a while to spend in Jasper I would absolutely recommend trying the canoe route. This option has many benefits over the guided boat tour. Not only are you not confined to a certain time, you can spend as long as you like at Spirit Island – you can even paddle there for sunset or sunrise.

Other Activities Near Maligne Lake

What else is there to do in the area?

Take advantage of your time in this incredible area. The drive along Maligne Lake Road is not a short one and there are many things to see and do here.

If you have time after your cruise, take the hike through Moose Meadows, an easy walking loop that leads to a swampy meadow where local Moose come to hang out. I didn’t see any Moose at Moose Lake but when I returned to Maligne Lake after the walk there was a Cow Moose hanging out right in front of the Maligne Lake Boat House – she was huge!

Maligne Lake Road is one of the best places to spot wildlife in Jasper and therefore it’s important to drive slow, you are more likely to spot roaming Elk, Black Bears and Moose this way! Remember to keep your distance from all wildlife during your time here.

Medicine Lake is another amazing stop situated about halfway down Maligne Lake Road and is a great spot to watch the sunset.

Maligne Lake Road is full of scenic spots. Medicine Lake is a great place to watch the sunset.

8 Amazing Things About Spirit Island

In a region chocked with superlatives, Spirit Island stands out. A cruise to Spirit Island takes you to one of the most photographed places in Canada. Nestled on the shores of beautiful Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, it’s an image recognized around the world. What makes it so special?

Here are 8 amazing things about Spirit Island:

  • Kodak moment: Peter Gales’ image of Spirit Island hung in Kodak’s Colorama showcase in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal in August and September of 1960.
  • Apple follows: Apple used an image of Spirit Island when they launched 2014 iPad model to showcase it's heightened photography capabilities.
  • It's not actually an island - most of the time: In spring, with melting snow and heavy rains, it’s possible for the water levels to be high enough to cut the island off from the shore. The rest of the year, it’s connected to shore. Spirit Island sits in the heart of what's called a "box canyon"—a narrow canyon with a flat bottom and vertical walls.
  • Whether the Spirits: The island is a spiritual place for the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, who believe mountains are physical representations of their ancestors. The fact that Spirit Island is surrounded on three sides by the same mountain range is very rare and makes it particularly significant to the Stoney.
  • Boats only: Access to the island is extremely limited due to its geography. It's in on a remote shore in a cold lake surrounded by high peaks and glacier, 14 km from the docks at Home Bay. It's hard to get to—paddling on your own can take four hours each way! To get the most time around the island, join our Premium Cruise which has an extended stay on the island.

Maligne Lake Cruise by Spirit Island

  • Where blue becomes emerald: The colour of the water is different at Spirit Island than where cruises depart at the Maligne Lake docks. The further south on the lake you travel, the closer you get to glaciers, and the more emerald-coloured the water becomes due to the presence of rock flour from the glaciers.
  • Photo op: Late afternoon at Spirit Island is the best time for photography. As the sun moves west across the sky, it can seem to sign straight on the island like a spotlight by around 4pm (depending on the time of the summer). Our Through the Lens Cruises run three times a week at 4:30pm to take advantage of this magical hour. Guided by a professional photographer, it includes a unique 60-minute stop at the iconic island.
  • Pearl vision: Artist and explorer Mary Schäffer was the first European to see Maligne Lake in 1908. Although she never mentioned the island, but she called the box canyon where it sits “the Hall of Gods”. In comparing it to another place she knew well, she said “If Lake Louise is a pearl, Maligne is the entire pearl necklace.”

Thanks to Brittany Andrews, Boat Driver at Maligne Lake Cruise , for her help putting this list together! Britt's been driving boats at Maligne for five summers. She knows the lake and the island really well. "I get to live and work in the national park, and I get to go to Spirit Island every day—it's one of the most beautiful places in the world," she says.
