Thompson Park

Thompson Park in Monroe Township is a great spot for snow tubing and sledding with the family. (Don’t believe us? Check out YouTube!) It also features one of the best dog parks in the area, a 2.5 acre area with separate sections for large and small dogs to play and romp around in the snow.

The visual highlight of the 616 acre park is Manalapan Lake — hike anywhere along its 30 acres and get a wonderful view.

The lake entrance is at the intersection of Lakeview Drive and Forsgate Drive. Dog owners can find the dog park entrance at the intersection of Perrineville Road and Schoolhouse Road.

Cape May County Park and Zoo

Cape May County Park offers a wide variety of activities for all ages, and that certainly extends into the winter months. The park is open daily from 7 am – dusk, and features over 200 acres filled with walking paths, ponds and picnic areas.

If weather permits, the Cape May Zoo is open 364 days a year (excluding Christmas) from 10 am – 3:30 pm. It’s home to over 550 animals representing 250 different species — if it’s not too cold, grab the kids and see the snow leopards!

The best part? Entrance to the park and the zoo is free!

Fort Mott State Park (Snow Tubing and Sledding)

Locals flock to Fort Mott State Park for some of the best snow tubing and sledding in South Jersey. This 124-acre park is a tuber’s paradise, with hills dotting the landscape. As soon as snow touches the ground, Fort Mott begins to fill up with families ready to hit the “mini slopes” with their sleds.

The trails within Fort Mott State Park are also wonderful for hiking — strap on those snow shoes when there’s deep powder. Your best bet after a winter storm is to check their official Facebook page for gate openings and schedules. Otherwise, the park is generally open from sunrise to dusk every day.

Winterfest Cooper River Park

The winter months mean one thing in Cherry Hill — it’s Winterfest ice skating season at Cooper River Park. This season’s Winterfest runs through February 25, 2024. The weekly Winterfest schedule is as follows:

• Thursdays, 5 pm – 9 pm
• Fridays, 5 pm – 10 pm
• Saturdays, 12 pm – 10 pm
• Sundays, 12 pm – 9 pm
• Holiday Mondays (MLK Day, Presidents’ Day), 12 pm – 9 pm

Rink admission is $7.50 for adults, and $5.50 for kids 5-12, seniors 65+, and veterans. Skate rentals are $6, and an unlimited season pass for skating is $125 per person.

May’s Landing

If you’re looking for an active getaway, plan a trip to May’s Landing. The former Revolutionary War port city offers the perfect home base for exploring the sights and shops of Atlantic County.

Stop by Lake Lenape Antiques or T&D Gifts in downtown May’s Landing, then enjoy lunch at  Henri Hott’s Barbeque, Maplewood II, Cousin Mario’s Italian Restaurant and Bar, or one of the other local eateries.

After lunch, walk off your meal with a loop around the Swamp Trail Boardwalk at Estell Manor Park, or sample one of the 27 award-winning wines at   Balic Winery . The Hamilton Mall and the shops and casinos of Atlantic City are just a short distance away if you’re in the mood to do a little more shopping.

Large hotels may offer ample amenities, but they aren’t always the best choice if relaxation is high on your list of must-dos. Loud neighbors, mediocre food, and long waits for the elevator can leave you feeling a little frazzled when you book a room in a mega hotel. Luckily, there’s a better option in May’s Landing. The   Inn at Sugar Hill , a 170-year-old country inn, offers just six guest rooms and an impressive view of the waterfront. All rooms are equipped with WiFi, flat-screen TVs, antique furnishings, and fireplaces.

What better place to shop for antiques than Burlington, one of New Jersey’s oldest cities?! The 330-year-old city is home to multiple locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a square mile of shops and restaurants.

If you’re a history buff, you’ll want to take one of the Historical Society’s walking tours. Tours cover a variety of topics, including the town’s role in the Revolutionary War, Underground Railroad, and Civil War.   Guided tours   include more than 40 sites, such as New Jersey’s oldest fire company, several Underground Railroad sites, the oldest library in New Jersey, and many historic homes.

Lily Inn   is the place to stay if you’re planning a winter getaway to Burlington. The five-guest room bed and breakfast was built around 1700 and features 10-foot ceilings, antiques, and blue marble fireplaces. Whether you choose the king room with spa tub or the spacious J. Howard Pugh suite with a separate sitting room, you’ll find the accommodations comfortable and convenient. The Inn is also home to the Riverview Restaurant, Brickwall Tavern and Dining Room, and Geraghty’s Pub.

Asbury Park

You might not want to take a dip in the ocean during a winter getaway (unless you’re a member of the Polar Bear Club), but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a trip to the beach. Although beach towns are packed during the summer months, they’re the perfect place to enjoy a quiet, uncrowded vacation when the weather turns colder. Asbury Park offers plenty of things to do, from a visit to Bruce Springsteen’s favorite haunt, The Stone Pony, to a stroll on the famous boardwalk.

The  Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel   provides a comfortable home base for your Asbury Park trip. The historic hotel is located across the street from The Stone Pony and offers scenic beach views from the upper floors. Rooms and suites feature down comforters, luxury bedding, and flat-screen TVs.

Set on 10-wooded acres, the   Wooden Duck Bed & Breakfast   provides everything you need for a relaxing weekend or midweek getaway in the Newton area. The 10 rooms, all named after duck breeds, feature fireplaces, flat-screen satellite TVs, and luxurious bedding.

The Harlequin, the B&B’s most luxurious suite, offers a queen bed, a two-person soaking tub, a double-sided gas fireplace, and a private balcony. You’ll also have access to the B&B’s 24-hour snack station, which offers home-baked treats, coffee, tea, and soft drinks.

A filling breakfast is a must if you’ll be spending the day visiting local attractions. The B&B provides a home-cooked meal every morning that includes fruit, bread, and an entrée sourced from local farms and butchers.

Nearby attractions include the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, Angry Erik Brewing, biplane rides at Andover Flight Academy, skiing at Mountain Creek, and tours of the Lakota Wolf Preserve (reservations are required).

Located just 20 minutes from Atlantic City, Smithville is an excellent getaway destination at any time of the year.  The historic downtown area features a collection of gift and antique shops, plus plenty of places to enjoy a quick or leisurely meal.

If you celebrate Christmas, you’ll want to be sure to plan your visit during December, when the town is transformed into the ultimate holiday village. Catch a performance of the Light Show on the Lake (from Thanksgiving until January 6), visit the talking Christmas tree, or make s’mores on the Greene on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during December.

Do your kids find Santa Claus a little scary? They may enjoy story time with Mrs. Claus on December weekends instead. If they’re fans of the bearded guy, treat them to Breakfast with Santa at Fred and Ethel’s Lantern Light Tavern on December 8 or 15.

The Colonial Inn offers convenient accommodations within walking distance of Historic Smithtown. The adult-only Inn features luxurious rooms and suites with soaking tubs, steam showers, and high-quality bedding, while The Barn is the place to go if you’ll be bringing the kids.

The   Woolverton Inn   in Stockton is just far enough away from home to qualify as a getaway but not so far that you’ll need to spend hours on the road to get there. Although the inn is surrounded by 300 acres of forest and farmland, it’s only a short drive to the shops and restaurants of Lambertville and New Hope, PA. A day at the inn starts with a gourmet, three-course breakfast in the dining room, followed by some refreshments and sweet treats in the afternoon. Rooms and suites offer feather beds and Egyptian linens and towels.

If you enjoy nothing better than reading a good book next to a roaring fire, you’ll want to book the Newell’s Library room at the Woolverton Inn. The room features more than 700 books, a sitting area with a fireplace, and a king-feather bed. During your winter visit, you can take advantage of the inn’s Warm Up/Chill Out package, which features an in-room fireside massage for two, aromatherapy candles, and a stress release and meditation CD.

Out-Of-State Getaways Close to New Jersey

Poughkeepsie, NY

In just two hours, you could be in Poughkeepsie , ready to start your relaxing mini-vacation. The city is home to the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge, the Walkway Over the Hudson. After you enjoy the views from the bridge, visit the FDR Presidential Library and Museum or do a little shopping for unique crafts and artwork at Craftsman by Design.

If you’re a history buff, you want to make time for a visit to Locust Grove Historic Estate during your trip. The mansion was once the home of Samuel F.B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph. Although Locust Grove is closed during January, tours are offered from Monday through Saturday for the rest of the year.

The Sunset Sensations Wine & Food Event will be offered at Locust Grove on December 5, while Holiday House Hunts for children will be held on December 1,8, and 15. Kids will explore the mansion looking for clues during the holiday-themed scavenger hunt.

Poughkeepsie has the usual assortment of big-name chain hotels, but if you’re looking for something a little quieter, try the Stonegate Bed & Breakfast in nearby Highland, NY. You’ll feel as if you’ve traveled back to the 19 th century when you step through the doors of the B&B (well, if the 19 th century offered indoor plumbing and king-size beds, that is).

Tannersville, PA

Winter is the perfect time to visit Tannersville , nestled in the heart of the Pocono Mountains. Whether you enjoy winter sports or prefer spending your days in the water, you’ll find plenty to do at Camelback Resort in Tannersville. In fact, Camelback offers so many activities that you won’t have to leave the resort until you’re ready to go back to New Jersey.

Camelback features 39 trails, three ski-ins, ski-out restaurants, a terrain park for snowboarders, and skiing and snowboarding lessons for adults and children. If tubing is more your style, you’ll enjoy sliding down one of the 42 lanes at the biggest snow tubing park in the country.

The coldest month of the year is January and the snowiest month is February. The areas with higher elevations tend to have colder weather and get more snow than those near the Jersey Shore.

Average temperatures between January through March range between 25°F to 35°F. It’s best to dress warm and bring snow gear in case of a winter storm or if you plan to do fun outdoor activities.

A ski or snowboard day at Mountain Creek is always memorable. Enjoy the ski resort’s four peaks, 46 trails, 1,040-foot verticle drop, eight lifts including two high-speed gondolas, a terrain park, ski and snowboard rentals, plus more.

Mountain Creek also has trail levels for all abilities, which you can enjoy weather-dependently from mid-December through early April. You can find most beginner green trails on the main Vernon Peak, which boasts the Cabriolet gondola. Vernon Peak also has a few intermediate blue trails and a couple of advanced black diamond trails.

On Granite Peak, intermediate riders can enjoy the longest run, called Southern Sojourn, a blue trail. The South Peak is where Mountain Creek ’s freestyle terrain slopes are located and Bear Peak mainly boasts black diamond runs.

Cozy Things To Do in New Jersey in Winter 2023

Since I am not a full-time traveler, I always try to find awesome local things to do in between my trips. You guys always seem to enjoy my seasonal guides which get constantly updated as I find new things to do. So following my Summer and Fall guides, I give you the best gathering of things to do in New Jersey this winter! Although this guide is mostly Jersey-based, I threw in a couple of near out of state locations worth the drive 🙂

As you bundle up for the next couple of months as Jersey temperatures drop, don’t miss out on all the cool things you do this winter either.

Christmas Lights

Pnc bank arts center light show.

If you want to drive through tunnels of cool Christmas lights head over to Holmdel to the PNC Bank Arts Center for this awesome Christmas Light display. A weekday ticket costs $30 and a weekend one $35. Note that closer to the holidays the entry line goes on for miles along the parkway.

Orchard of Lights at Demarest Farms

For a cute farm experience, head over to Demarest Farms in North Jersey. For $35 you can take a 30 minutes ride through the orchard surrounded by cute light displays. Stop by the farm store to pick up some fresh goods but note that it closes at 5 pm so you might miss it with the later light show!

Skyland’s Stadium Light Show & Village

If you want a one-stop shop for lights and a Christmas village with attractions and vendors, head over to Augusta to Skyland’s Stadium . Entry is timed and costs $29 per vehicle. The drive is a mile long and will take you around 30 minutes.

Dyker Heights

Dyker Heights in a neighborhood in Brooklyn which gets decorated for the holidays by the local residents to something on another level. Although located in Brooklyn, It’s really a quick drive from central Jersey through Staten Island. Located from 11th to 13th Avenues between 83rd to 86th Street.

The area gets crowded so finding parking will be challenging. There are even local tours to take you around but trust me, you probably don’t need one unless you’re very interested in the details. You can easily spend anywhere from 30 minutes to hours walking around this gem of a neighborhood.

• Winter Wonder Lights: East Brunswick’s light drive-thru. Largest animated one.
• Six Flags Holiday in The Park : Two in one! Many lights and many rides 🙂
• Historic Smithville near Atlantic City – Light display on the Lake

Holiday Markets & Winter Villages

German christmas market.

Transport yourself to an awesome European-style Christmas Market in Augusta, NJ . Happening in the first weekend of December, don’t miss this great event. They’ll have many vendors, entertainment, food trucks and of course some nice gluhwein. Too bad it’s only one weekend as it is one of the cutest things to do in New Jersey this winter!

Peddler’s Village

Although it is located a little past the NJ border in Pennsylvania, Peddler’s Village is one of my favorite places to visit in the winter! The little shops sell everything from small trinkets, to food, to awesome holiday decor. There are a couple of restaurants around too. For the holidays, the whole shopping mall gets lit up and becomes a very magical place. After visiting the Village, stop in New Hope which is a very cute small town nearby!

Philadelphia Christmas Village

Ok, ok I get it, another PA intruder, but hear me out. This is a super awesome outdoor German-style market . And you can’t convince me to go to NYC’s super-crowded Bryant Park at this time of the year. There are a ton of holiday vendors, a cute beer/wine garden, and tons of delicious food. Don’t forget to walk the surrounding streets too where you can find a merry-go-round and other hidden gems.

Asbury Park Bazaar

If you’re looking for unique gifts for this holiday season, Asbury Park Bazaar has 5 different locations, Asbury Hotel, Asbury Convention Center, Long Branch, Atlantic City and Atlantic Highlands, all with different dates giving you enough time to check out a couple of them 🙂

Winter Villages

• Bergen County has the  Winter Wonderland  with Bumper Cars and Ice Skating.
• Newark has a Winter Village with multiple activities.

New Jersey Winter Restaurants

New jersey breweries.

There is something very comforting about a nice winter lager. You know what’s even better? A beer in a heated igloo as the temperatures reach below freezing and the outside is surrounded by fluffy snow. Check out Asbury Biergarten , one of my favorites, Manafirkin or Man Skirt in Hackettstown for their winter igloo setups!

Winter Cozy Restaurants

I love going out to eat during the holidays because of the coziness that the decor brings. Here are some picks for a great holiday ambiance!

• Rails Steakhouse – Towaco : An upscale steakhouse that is perfect for an evening out in the cold
• The Ashford – Jersey City : While I wouldn’t call the food extraordinary here, the decor is great!
• Sorellina – Hoboken: Delicious Italian food among beautiful holiday decor! I’ll take it.
• Cowan’s Public : Not only is Nutley a great place for date night and Cowan’s is a known place for the holidays because of its cozy decor.
• HoHoKus Inn : A small local inn with a simple but beautiful holiday atmosphere.
• Fiorentini in Rutherford : The minimalist aesthetic goes perfectly with Christmas touches!
• Walpack Inn : Walpack is one of my favorites in North Jersey because of its rustic cabin vibes.
• Oceanos – Fair Lawn : A nice upscale seafood restaurant with boujee holiday vibes.
• South House – Jersey City : Another JC spot that transforms into a postcard.

Winter Activities

Skiing, snowboarding & tubing.

You might not find the best spots in NJ however, a local ski trip is certainly not a bad idea if you don’t want to drive too far. You obviously know Mountain Creek in North Jersey, which has it all. Then you have the smaller Campgaw in Mahwah perfect for beginners or High Point Park for cross-country skiing.

Ice Skating

One of the most fun things to do in New Jersey this winter is a classic, ice skating! Check out Palmer Square in Princeton along with all the town’s stunning decor. Then you have Newport Skates in Jersey City right near the waterfront. The infamous American Dream has a massive indoor rink too. If you want to skate near the shore, check out Pier Village in Long Branch.

The Polar Bear Plunge

Are you brave enough to plunge into the freezing Atlantic in the middle of a New Jersey winter? If so, don’t miss Seaside Heights annual Polar Bear Plunge.

A fter summer in New Jersey passes by, colder weather brings an incredible peace and quiet to those shore towns that were so chaotic just weeks before. Which means it’s the perfect time to plan an off-season getaway. Imagine a world where there’s no wait at your favorite restaurants, and no sound other than the ocean just a few feet away.

It’s a true break from everyday life, and you deserve it. So leave the bathing suit at home and plan your cold-weather getaway to one of these unlikely shore towns.

Atlantic City

Location: Atlantic County, Exit 38 During the Winter: The casinos and clubs run year-round and are the city’s most popular destinations. In particular, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City treats their guests like rock stars . Besides the casinos, Atlantic City is also home to New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse, Absecon Lighthouse ; which happens to be the third-tallest in the US as well. If you’re traveling with kids, check out the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum. Restaurant Week is typically an annual tradition, but for 2021 will take place in October. Where to Stay: The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, of course! Why I like it: Animal lovers can visit the nearby Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine. They offer a gift shop, educational exhibits, and an inside look at sea animals during rehabilitation.

Location: Atlantic County, Exit 28 During the Winter: Wineries and breweries abound in Hammonton, but there’s plenty more besides imbibing to keep you busy. The downtown is a bustling center of independent shops and restaurants, as well as the Eagle Theatre; however, the latter is currently closed due to COVID-19.  Where to Stay: Step back in time with a stay at The Farmhouse at White Horse Winery. First, you’ll wake up to a gourmet breakfast in one of six guest rooms before your visit to the winery. ( Editor’s Note : The Farmhouse is currently closed, but hopes to re-open in the fall of 2021.) Why I like it: Hammonton’s Casciano Coffee is one of eleven spots serving the best hot chocolate in South Jersey. Stop by for a cozy cup of goodness this winter.

Location: Atlantic County, Exit 41 During the Winter: Take a day trip to Historic Smithville . This old-fashioned village boasts over 60 shops, cobblestone streets, and foot bridges. You’ll find it all — toys, collectibles, clothing, candles, and food — at this 17th-century landmark.  Where to Stay: The Colonial Inn inside Historic Smithville features rooms with lakeside views, porches and luxurious decor. Why I like it: Bird watchers, rejoice! The Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge spans 47,000 acres and is a magnet for winter birds. For instance, you can spot piping plovers, American black ducks, and Atlantic brants in the cold months.

Location: Cape May County, Exit 0 During the Winter: There are wine tastings at Willow Creek Winery, and craft beer samples at Cape May Brewing Company. Meanwhile, history buffs can enjoy the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum and The Museum of Cape May County. Some of the best eateries around include The Washington Inn and Peter Shields Inn and Restaurant . Then there’s the Beef Jerky Outlet, which offers jerky as well as jellies, jams, candy, and popcorn. Where to Stay: The Star Inn offers a variety of suites to suit any group size. Why I like it: Cape May is far enough south it feels like a road trip without crossing state lines!

Location: Cape May County, Exit 30 During the Winter: Ocean City is a year-round fishing destination. While October and November is striped bass season, December catches include blackfish, ling, and cod. Likewise, cold weather migration makes for great bird watching in the Back Bay. The Asbury Avenue shopping district offers more than 100 shops and eateries. In fact, there’s a restaurant for every meal. Families will find plenty of interesting info during a day trip to the Ocean City Historical Museum. Where to Stay: The Port-O-Call Hotel features beautiful ocean views and is just half a mile from the Ocean City Music Pier. Why I like it: There is always plenty to do along the famous Ocean City boardwalk!

Stone Harbor

Location: Cape May County, Exit 10A During the Winter: Stone Harbor is perfect for families. The town has educational spots like The Wetlands Institute and the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary, as well as great food; stop by the famous Uncle Bill’s Pancake House or grab dessert at Springer’s Homemade Ice Cream. There are also annual charitable traditions like the Polar Bear Plunge and Stone Harbor Shiver, if you’re brave enough.  Where to Stay: The Reeds at Shelter Haven is a picturesque place to spend your Stone Harbor getaway. Why I like it: Stone Harbor and Avalon are right next to each other on Seven Mile Island; in other words, you can visit two great towns for the price of one vacation!

Asbury Park

Location: Monmouth County, Exit 102 During the Winter: Asbury Park is both a bar-hopper and music-lover’s paradise. They typically have events along the boardwalk every single evening. Many spots are even pet friendly (for instance, the Wonder Bar hosts a “Yappy Hour” for furry friends). The Asbury Park Convention Hall also houses many events, from shopping to entertainment. Where to Stay: The Asbury Hotel is the latest social hub, located right in the center of the action. Why I like it: The Stone Pony rocks all year round, and the winter is no exception. 

Location: Monmouth County, Exit 109 During the Winter: Red Bank is the perfect place for a shopping getaway. From high-end boutiques to mom-and-pop hobby shops, there’s a store for every shopper. (Of course, Red Bank is home to Kevin Smith’s famous comic shop, Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash.) One notable eatery is JBJ’s Soul Kitchen, run by the Jon Bon Jovi Foundation. The menu has no prices, and guests can donate either money or volunteer hours to pay for their meal. As for fun, theaters such as the Two River Theater and Count Basie Theater offer new performances regularly. Where to Stay: The Oyster Point Hotel as well as sister hotel The Molly Pitcher Inn are great options. Why I like it: You can go ice skating at the Red Bank Armory.

Spring Lake

Location: Monmouth County, Exit 98 During the Winter: Close proximity to Allaire State Park makes Spring Lake a great destination for bikers and hikers. But indoorsy types can also enjoy the living museum at Allaire Village , a nineteenth-century iron-working town. During normal circumstances, the Spring Lake Theatre Company hosts an annual holiday performance of Scrooge . Other holiday standouts include the Spring Lake Christmas Celebration and Candlelight Christmas Inn Tour. Foodies can delight their palates at dining destinations such as Whispers and Arugula. Where to Stay: The Spring Lake Inn, built in 1888, is just a block from the beach and boardwalk. Why I like it: The iconic Spring Lake Footbridges. They span the lake and are decked out with lights during the holiday season. You will also be able to enjoy the improvements that the town recently made to the shoreline.

Long Beach Island

Location: Ocean County, Exit 63 During the Winter: The popular Fantasy Island leaves their arcade open on weekends. (The rides are, however, closed during winter.) In addition, this 18-mile long barrier island offers fishing, beaches, and surfing even when it’s cold. From the top of the Barnegat Lighthouse you can catch a panoramic view of the island. You can also explore the New Jersey Maritime Museum’s collection of maritime history and artifacts. The most famous food stop in the area is The Chicken or the Egg (or “CHEGG” as the locals say). While the menu is full of options, their chicken wings are the signature item. Where to Stay: Drifting Sands Hotel in Ship Bottom is pet friendly with beach access and on-site parking. Why I like it: Long Beach Island has many year-round dining options, so the food choices are aplenty.

Point Pleasant

Location: Ocean County, Exit 98 During the Winter: The biggest draw of Point Pleasant is arguably Jenkinson’s Arcade. However, Jenkinson’s Aquarium is also a hot spot during cold months, with many types of sea life. Car buffs can also make a trip to the Vintage Automobile Museum of New Jersey. Healthy eaters will appreciate Local Urban Kitchen, a restaurant that accommodates vegan and gluten-free diets. Where to Stay: The White Sands is on a private stretch of Point Pleasant Beach; complete with a full-service spa and a heated indoor pool. Why I like it: Given the area’s summer popularity, Point Pleasant is best enjoyed as a quiet, winter getaway.

Location: Ocean County, Exit 82 During the Winter: The Toms River Winding River Rink is usually one of the biggest draws. (They hope to open for public skating again soon. But for now, they offer small skating classes.) Meanwhile, the Robert J. Nevins Planetarium offers all sorts of off-world activities. Finally, Cattus Island State Park is great for nature and wildlife lovers. Where to Stay: The Mathis House is a true Victorian era bed and breakfast, complete with tea time. Click here to visit their website and see why it’s called a hidden gem in the heart of Toms River. Why I like it: There are plenty of restaurants with heated outdoor seating. The list includes Baker’s Water Street Bar & Grille, Teresa’s Osaka, Burger 25, and The Office.

Fun for families

Did you think waterparks were only places to go in the summer? Think again! American Dream in East Rutherford wants to help you make a big splash this winter – the mega entertainment complex’s indoor DreamWorks Waterpark is open year-round, so you can slip, slide and float with everyone’s favorite movie characters in any season. For more all-ages tubular fun, bring your guests snow tubing at Campgaw Mountain in Mahwah. Peak Bonus: If you have skiers or snowboarders in your party, they can tackle the fresh powder their way too. No need to lug their bulky gear with you – daily rentals are available at the mountain.

New Jersey is also home to some wild curiosities. For creepy crawlies, a visit to Insectroplis in Toms River is a must. Known as The Bugseum of New Jersey, it’s home to thousands of insects, and even a “mud tube” guests can crawl through to see what it’s like to be a termite. Or go under the sea (without getting wet!) at Adventure Aquarium in Camden, home to over 15,000 of the most diverse aquatic animals in the world, where kids are invited to get hands-on with some of the friendly residents.

Now that the holidays are over, the winter blues start to sink in. With shorter and colder days ahead, it’s easy to want to stay inside and watch movies all day.

While I’m all for a good Netflix binge here and there, I don’t like to waste my days under the covers. There are so many fun things to do in my home state all year , why not get out and take an adventure?

Even if it’s still doing something indoors, there are plenty of activities that can help you be your best self – physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually.

From art and history to culture and food, there is truly something for everyone. Be a kid again or head outdoors to enjoy the snow. See a show or taste a local brew. Visit a small town or go back in time. This list definitely has it all!

Things to do in New Jersey in Winter

• Try to Escape the Room (various locations) – I am hooked on this trendy group activity! I have done four escape rooms and still can’t wait to do the next! They are all differently themed, so there is always something new to experience. In doing a quick Google search, there’s an escape-style room in most counties in NJ and many times there are discount tickets available on popular sites.
• Take in art at the New Jersey State Museum (Trenton) – For those who like art and history, the New Jersey State Museum is an awesome destination. Boasting over 12,000 pieces of American art, there is truly something for everyone. And while you’re there, check out the Planetarium ! You can view a laser light show or gaze up at more than 6,000 stars in comfortable reclining seats. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for kids, so it’s a no-brainer!
• Be a kid again at iPlay America (Freehold) – This is an indoor Boardwalk filled with games, rides and attractions. Perfect for the kid at heart and definitely a different date night idea. They also have a bar & grill which offers boardwalk-style eats!
• Visit with sea creatures at Adventure Aquarium (Camden) – Open daily, Adventure Aquarium is a fun experience for anyone who likes marine animals. They have over 8,500 aquatic species including hammerhead sharks, hippos, turtles, penguins, stingrays and, of course, lots of fish! They also offer daily shows and up-close animal encounters included with admission.
• Enjoy winter with some Snow Tubing (Vernon) – For those of you who enjoy winter and want to be outside, check out snow tubing at Mountain Creek ! I don’t ski, but I love snow tubing! It truly brings out the kid in me to slide down a hill of snow! And for only $30 a ticket, you can have a day of fun (and probably get a good workout, too!)
• Be totally cliche and go Ice Skating (various locations) – For those traditionalists out there, you can’t pass by winter without a good ice skating session! I’m not the best on skates (for having been a dancer through high school, I have terrible balance), but I always enjoy a few laps around the rink. It’s one of those cliche date ideas, but it’s always so romantic to hold hands and glide on ice!
• Experience a new thrill with Bumper Cars on Ice (Brick) – If you like snow tubing, ice skating and bumper cars, this one is for you! Ocean Ice Palace in Brick offers the first-ever ice bumper cars in New Jersey. If you’ve ever wiped out on ice skates or bumped into someone going down a snow tube hill, you can only imagine how hilarious this activity will be!
• Sit back and have a drink at a NJ Brewery (various locations) – Although I’m not a huge beer drinker, I have enjoyed traveling around New Jersey trying many of the local breweries popping up around the state. Most of them are quite good and offer a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy a drink and chat with friends. Check back on the blog soon for a list of my favorite breweries to visit!
• Take a stroll through historic Lambertville (Lambertville) – This charming town is perfect for anyone who loves small town feels with tons of antique shops, coffee houses and eclectic galleries. Perfectly situated along the Delaware River, you’ll have a lovely day strolling the streets and taking it all in.
• See a show at McCarter Theater (Princeton) – If you’re into plays, you have to check out this local theater. I have been going to see shows at McCarter almost my whole life and it’s always a fun occasion. I’ll be honest, not every show is spectacular, but they usually put on an enjoyable performance. And if you haven’t been, Princeton has an awesome downtown with a ton of great restaurants and stores.
• Have dinner and watch a tournament at Medieval Times (Lyndhurst) – Medieval Times has to be one of the most exciting nights out I’ve ever had. You’re taken inside a (replica) 11th-Century castle and asked to choose a knight. Then you watch your knight take on five other knights on horseback with lances and shields. All while eating a delicious dinner, with your hands (nope, they didn’t have silverware back in those times!) It’s ridiculously entertaining and totally worth the trip!

So, there you have it. You don’t have to stay cooped up inside all winter long. Whether you live in Jersey or you’re just visiting, there truly is something for everyone.

This 77-acre farm with 25 acres of vines are hand pruned, hand harvested and dry farmed in the rolling hills of Hunterdon County. “One of my favorites, Beneduce Vineyards, has great wine and fun year-round events such as live music and food trucks on Saturdays,” said Vasser.

Grounds for Sculpture

Grounds for Sculpture is a 42-acre landscaped park with 300 contemporary sculptures, an arboretum, and a museum with an indoor exhibitions that features six galleries.

Frenchtown is a vibrant community full of Victorian architecture, art, and culture nestled along the banks of the Delaware River. Vasser recommends visiting during Frenchtown Riverfest. “There are all kinds of street fair activities along the river,” he said.

Cape May County Park & Zoo

The Cape May County Park & Zoo houses over 500 different animals that includes African lions, American black bears, snow leopards and ring-tailed lemurs. The zoo features playgrounds for kids of all ages and both places are free to the public. "It's truly one of the best-kept secrets in the area," said Wieland.

Asbury Park

Asbury Park has become a creative hub and music mecca within the last decade with iconic landmarks like The Stone Pony, Asbury Lanes and Silverball Retro Arcade. Asbury Park combines gaming, bowling, dining, live entertainment and of course swimming and surfing on the shore.

Adventure Aquarium

Adventure Aquarium features the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast and protects over 8,000 aquatic species, including penguins and stingrays. Visitors can interact with hundreds of sea creatures at the touch tanks. “It’s a favorite for kids of all ages, especially if you’re looking for an indoor activity,” said Wieland.
