Get to know: Chris Cruse

“I can't speak for everyone, but here I see our queer community becoming stronger and more radical in the face of this harrowing moment in our history,” says Chris Cruse, DJ and promoter behind Spotlight, the L.A. party that has been running since 2012, the year he turned 30. Pushing a sound that’s “tough, sleazy, soulful and fun,” past guests include Honey Dijon, Prosumer, Tama Sumo, Lakuti, Daniel Wang and Mike Servito, illustrating an ethos that encompasses everything from ecstatic disco to corrosive acid bubblers.

In the face of America’s darkening political climate, the party is a refuge of love and light, attracting up to 1,500 people. But Spotlight’s history illustrates the problems inherent with throwing events in L.A. “You’d think California was a cool, progressive place to be,” says Chris, “but many of the rules governing nightlife have been on the books since the time when schools were racially segregated, women couldn’t vote and being gay was definitely illegal.”

With many LGBT clubs forced to close, including iconic venue The Spotlight Club, from which the party takes its name, Spotlight has made its name as a roving, rootless illegal warehouse party. “One of the coolest spots we did it in had a wholesale market out front,” recalls Chris. “You had to walk through the store, down an aisle past the soup cans and the piñatas, to the back where our door girl Queen Michael would take your cover and let you into the warehouse.” At points, however, their popularity has caused problems, with word reaching the police and parties getting closed down, leading to Spotlight now running a tighter friends-and- family policy.

A need for community runs through Chris’ story. Growing up in remote Richmond VA, the first electronic music he heard was the likes of Orbital, Photek and Josh Wink on MTV. Moving to L.A. aged 18 introduced him to DJ Harvey’s Sarcastic Disco, Lovefingers and Nitedog’s Blackdisco parties, and Sublevel with Doc Martin. “I’d go out to these warehouses and have an amazing time dancing, but I wouldn’t meet other queer people,” he says, “Or at least, I’d never go home with any of them.”

Realizing much of the music was the soundtrack to foundational gay clubs, from Paradise Garage to The Saint, and inspired by a 2008 art project trip to Berlin, where Daniel Wang introduced him to a host of queer DJs who are still friends, Spotlight was born. Learning to mix while spending a summer in Montreal with a guy who had decks and a pile of disco records, his own DJ career has seen him grace Beats In Space, while this summer he played a host of parties including Panorama Bar, Horse Meat Disco, Honcho Summer Camp Out and The Black Madonna’s final date of her We Still Believe tour.

One of the brains behind Movement’s queer after- hours Club Toilet, Chris has also started a new Sunday day-into-night rave called The Closer. “We have gorgeous weather here in L.A., but shockingly few day parties.” 

The election of Trump underlined how important Spotlight has become. Throwing a party on a defaced model of the White House, reclaimed with queer flags, “It was one of the most moving parties for me,” he says. “It felt like we all understood what kind of fight we’d have ahead for ourselves.”

2 Holland America Line Crew Members Killed During Onboard 'Incident' in the Bahamas

The cruise line said that the crew members died in the ship's engineering space

Two crew members on a Holland America cruise ship died following an onboard "incident” in the ship’s engineering space.

Holland America shared the news on Facebook Friday, noting that the two crew members died while onboard the Nieuw Amsterdam ship at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas that day.

The company said that it notified "appropriate authorities" and that the cause of the incident was being "investigated." Holland America did not disclose the crew members' identities.

“All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members’ families at this difficult time,” a statement from the company read.

“The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority," the cruise line added.

Holland America noted that it was offering counseling services to crew members who "may have been affected by this incident."

A spokesperson for the cruise line told PEOPLE on Saturday that the incident occurred Friday around 9:20 a.m. local time. They added that the ship was on a "7-night itinerary" and left Fort Lauderdale on March 16.

WFLA reported, citing CruiseMapper , that the Nieuw Amsterdam returned to Fort Lauderdale on Saturday.

The cruise deaths come days after another cruise incident, in which a Florida man was arrested in the Bahamas after a 27-year-old woman, also from Florida, was found dead on a cruise ship.

The 32-year-old man was arrested by the Royal Bahamas Police Force after a passenger was found unresponsive while their ship was on the island of Grand Bahama. The woman was pronounced dead after a medical team performed CPR on her when she was found unresponsive in her cabin.

Authorities then “confiscated a quantity of suspected cocaine” from her cabin and arrested the man, with an investigation ongoing. The man and the woman have not been publicly identified, and neither has the cruise line.

"An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Investigations are ongoing into this incident," police shared at the time.

Incubus DJ Chris Kilmore Selling Los Angeles Home for $4.599 Million

Chris Kilmore, DJ for the rock band Incubus, has put his Los Angeles home on the market for $4.599 million. 

Kilmore and his wife, Tenny Kilmore, have called the nearly 5,600-square-foot residence in the city’s Sherman Oaks neighborhood home since 2016. Tenny, an agent affiliated with the Beverly Hills office of Coldwell Banker Realty, is also handling the sale.

“We remodeled the kitchen, bathrooms and outdoor space,” Tenny said over email. “This home is unique with its wordly design; high-end appliances from Miele, exotic Italian marbles, hardware from England, custom Mexican iron doors and a powder [room] sink from Turkey.”

The entire property, which hit the market earlier this month, “is like an art piece,” she said. “Every room has something eye-catching.”

Chris Kilmore, 51, who has been the DJ for the band known for songs like “Drive” and “Wish You Were Here” since 1998, paid $2.55 million for the home, records with PropertyShark show.

The light-filled home has high vaulted ceilings; multiple fireplaces; a gourmet kitchen with custom floor-to-ceiling white oak cabinetry and specially sourced exotic marble countertops; a screening room; a safe room; and a balcony. There are five bedrooms, including a primary suite with heated floors and an en-suite bathroom with quartzite countertops, a smart toilet and smart LED mirrors. 

There’s also a manicured garden, complete with a putting green, a barbecue and mature fruit trees.

The home could easily suit a number of potential buyers, from an individual looking to combine a home with space for a studio or office, “a couple looking to grow their family or an already large family,” Tenny said. 

It’s a “versatile space that can fit anyone’s lifestyle,” she added.

He also mentioned that back then, Tony Khan was against taping shows and was pushing for nothing but live telecasts. But then it turned out that the whole world shut down in about a year later and every show was taped.

“I think it would be such a great idea,” Jericho said. “I really loved doing Dynamite from the cruise… It was an amazing experience to do it; we taped it, which is so funny because, at the time, Tony [Khan] was really against taping the show. Then eight months later, every show is taped because of the pandemic.” [H/T WrestlingInc. ]

The Ocho also claimed that that specific taping of AEW Dynamite reminded him of the episodes of WCW Nitro tht took place from Club La Vela in Panama City.

Disney Cruise Line continues its rapid expansion with the reveal of the third Triton-class ship name and theme. The ship will be called the Disney Destiny, be themed after heroes and villains and is scheduled to be delivered in 2025.

The new ship continues Disney’s commitment to its cruise line , which launched the first Triton class ship, the Disney Wish in 2022 and is getting ready to launch a second, the Disney Treasure in December 2024. The cruise line also bought and is currently renovating a partially built ship to be called the Disney Adventure, which will homeport in Singapore. Disney bought the Adventure for a reported $44 million after Genting Cruise Lines fell into administration.

About The Disney Destiny

The design theme of Disney Destiny will continue Disney’s legacy of storytelling by drawing inspiration from movies, characters and theme park attractions. According to a press release, “The Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering teams were inspired by the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their purpose, when developing the Disney Destiny.”

Those who take a cruise on the ship will be able to enjoy spaces, experiences and entertainment themed around stories like The Lion King , Hercules and One Hundred and One Dalmatians .

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”

Home ports, cruise routes, cost and onboard activities are not yet known. Like the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, there will be plenty of spaces for kids to play and spaces dedicated for adults to enjoy all around the ship. There will also be three main dining rooms that cruisers will rotate through during a sailing.

Cruising Is Back

According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), cruising is back in full force as of 2023. This is good news for Disney, who has three new ships debuting before the end of 2025. The 2023 State of the Cruise Industry CLIA report states that 85% of travelers who have cruised plan to cruise again, which is nine percent higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Other Disney Cruise Projects

Along with new cruise ships, Disney Cruise Line is getting ready to welcome cruisers to an all-new private island destination in The Bahamas, Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. The new island is set to welcome Disney fans for the first time in June 2024. With Lighthouse Point, Disney plans to invest between $250 million and $400 million into the project.
