It has everything you’ll find in Western Europe — but for half the price and with half the crowds!

Most travelers visit Krakow or spend a day or two in Warsaw before departing to a neighboring country. While that’s better than nothing, Poland has so much more to offer.

From beautiful parks to medieval cities to cheap beer to rugged coastlines, you can spend weeks here and still only scratch the surface.

Best of all, there are far fewer tourists here than elsewhere in Europe so it’s easy to have a more local, more authentic experience.

1. Visit Auschwitz

Auschwitz-Birkenau is the site of a former concentration camp used by the Nazis during World War II. Approximately 1.3 million people were sent here and an astounding 1.1 million of them were killed. When the camp was liberated in 1945, there were just 7,000 people there, many of whom were incredibly ill or sick. A visit here is sobering but shouldn’t be missed. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking and keep in mind you’re allowed to take photographs but be considerate that this is a somber place. Admission is free, but the experience is much more meaningful with a guide who can provide context. Expect to pay around 550 PLN for a guide.

2. Explore Krakow

Krakow is a student city and one of the biggest tourist destinations in the country (people love coming here to party). This city is beautiful, inexpensive, and is filled with plenty to do. Be sure to check out the castle, the nearby salt mines, and underground ruins. The Christmas market in December is amazing too!

3. See Wroclaw

Wroclaw is one of Poland’s lesser-known destinations. Home to some amazing architecture, this small city is beautiful, inexpensive, and free of crowds. Be sure to see the Raclawice Panorama, which depicts the Battle of Raclawice that took place during the Kosciuszko Uprising in the 1790s.

4. Wander through Bialowieza National Park

This national park on the Belarus border contains the last remains of a primeval forest that once covered most of Europe. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, and remarkably, the only place where European bison still live in the wild. Bialowieza National Park is the oldest in Poland. Stretching 105 square kilometers (40 square miles), it’s thriving with biological diversity. Visitors can hike, walk, and bike in nature and you can also try unique local cuisine from Bialowieza, which is influenced by nearby Belarus and Ukraine. Some local favorites include Pielmieni meat dumplings, Mrowisko sweet cakes, and Zubr (bison) beer. Admission is 16 PLN. If you want a guide, expect to pay around 250 PLN.

5. Discover Warsaw

Explore the old and new towns, see the castle, binge on pierogis, and visit the city’s amazing museums that highlight the struggles of the Warsaw Uprising and the ghettoization of the Jews during World War II. Be sure to spend time wandering Warsaw’s Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with history, art, culture, and science. Savor a hearty Polish meal at one of the many ‘milk bars’ and check out Hala Koszyki, a funky food market hall with nearly 20 different eateries and many tasty offerings.

One of the best things you can do when you arrive in a new destination is take a walking tour. It’s a great way to get the lay of the land and learn about the culture, people, and history of the destination. Walkative offers free tours in Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk, Poznan, and a few other cities around the country. These tours provide much more insight than any guidebook. Just be sure to tip your guides at the end!

2. Tour the Szczecin underground tunnels

These concrete tunnels lie beneath the city of Szczecin in northwest Poland (near the border with Germany). The tunnels were designated as a bomb shelter in the 1940s and then used as a fallout shelter during the Cold War. Located 17 meters (56 feet) below ground, here you can see artifacts from World War II and learn how the shelter was used during the war. You’ll also learn how the tunnels were reinforced during the Cold War to survive a nuclear attack. Tours last around an hour and admission is 38 PLN. It can get cold in the tunnels so bring a sweater.

3. Visit a national park

Poland has 23 different national parks. Ojcowski National Park (near Krakow) is a small park filled with stunning caves and castles while Slowinski National Park (on the Baltic Coast), Biebrzanski, Narwianski, and Poleski National Parks (all located in the northeast) offer great bird watching. Bialowieza National Park (near Belarus) is where you can see Europe’s only wild bison. They’re a great way to get away from the crowds and stretch your legs, especially in the summer when the weather is nice, or in the fall when the leaves are changing. There are usually lodges and campgrounds near each park as well if you want to disconnect for a few days.

4. Explore Wawel Castle

This site in Krakow is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in all of Poland. Castles here are rare as most were mostly destroyed over the years (the vast majority of which being destroyed during World War II). Built in the 13th century under the order of King Casimir III, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to an art museum that has medieval tapestries, the former Polish crown jewels, and Ottoman Empire treasures. Admission ranges from 5-46 PLN depending on what you want to see. On Mondays in the summer, free tickets are available for the Crown Treasury and Armory. There are seasonal discounts from September to October as well for the Dragon’s Den, Sandomierska Tower, and The Lost Wawel archeological exhibition, and The Church of St. Gereon.

5. Visit the Wooden Churches

Tucked away in the southeastern corner of the country, The Wooden Churches of Southern Lesser Poland consists of six Roman Catholic churches that reflect various periods of religious architecture in Poland: from Medieval to Gothic, Rococo, Baroque, as well as the occasional onion dome and Greek cross. Dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, the interiors of these UNESCO churches were intricately painted and carved by hand, with every inch of the church a veritable work of art. Dress appropriately when visiting as these are sites of religious worship.

6. Tour the Wieliczka Salt Mine

This mine produced table salt and was first used in the 13th century. It became one of Krakow’s main industries and was in use until 2007. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can marvel over the cavernous chambers, statues, chapels, chandeliers, and cathedrals — all carved out of salt and stone by the miners. The mines reach depths of over 300 meters (984 feet) and are also home to contemporary works of art. The mine is just 13 kilometers (8 miles) outside the city. Admission is 109 PLN.

7. Stroll through Gdansk

Formerly known as Danzig, Gdansk is a beautiful coastal city in northern Poland. Much of the city was rebuilt after World War II but you can still find plenty of history here. Be sure to spend some time wandering the old town and checking out the local markets and small artisan shops. And don’t miss the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the city’s towering 16th-century gothic church. There’s also an excellent World War II museum here too.

8. Admire Kalwaria Zebrzydowska

Located an hour from Krakow, this Catholic monastery dates back to the 17th century. Built in the Mannerist (Late Renaissance) architectural style, it was declared a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1999. Surrounding the monastery are over 5 kilometers (3 miles) of pilgrimage routes and 42 chapels and churches which have been in regular use for over 400 years. Tours are free (though they must be booked in advance) and last around an hour. Donations are welcome.

9. Head to Lublin

Lublin is eastern Poland’s main city. It was an important trading and military center during the Middle Ages. It developed its own architectural style at the end of the 16th century, which has become known as the Lublin Renaissance as rulers here brought in many Italian architects to expand the city. Be sure to visit the castle, the monastery, and the old town (which is sometimes called “Little Krakow” owing to its similarities with Krakow’s old town). There’s also the sobering State Museum that illuminates the atrocities of the death camps of World War II.

10. See the world’s tallest pope statue

Located 2.5 hours south of Warsaw in Czestochowa, this statue of Pope John Paul II (who was born in Poland) stands 13.8 meters (42 feet) tall and is made of fiberglass. There really isn’t much else to see here but it makes for a quirky photo op if you’re in the area!

11. Visit the Exploseum

This abandoned Nazi explosive plant, founded by Alfred Nobel (the inventor of dynamite), is now a museum open to the public. Here visitors learn about Alfred Nobel, his company, what life was like for Polish residents during the German occupation, weapons used during the war, as well as modern weapons of war. It’s an interesting and eye-opening museum. Tucked away in Bydgoszcz (3 hours north of Warsaw), the museum takes 1-2 hours to explore. Admission is 17 PLN and includes a guide. Children under 6 are not allowed to enter.

12. Visit the Churches of Peace

These are the biggest timber-framed churches in Europe. Located in Jawor and Swidnica (near Wroclaw), they were built in the mid-17th century and were the first Lutheran churches constructed in Roman Catholic Poland. Since the churches were not Catholic, they were only allowed to be built from wood and could not have steeples or bells (Lutherans were not allowed to construct stone churches that could compete with the dominant religion). Today they are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Admission is 12 PLN and an audio tour is available. Just be sure to dress appropriately.

13. See the World War II Museum in Gdansk

The Museum of the Second World War opened in 2008 and is one of the best museums in the country. It’s an immersive experience that really opens your eyes to the death and destruction that the war unleashed — in Poland and beyond. In addition to the weapons, clothing, letters, and maps there is an entire recreated street to give you a palpable sense of what it would have been like to live through the worst of the war. Admission 25 PLN. For an extra 2 PLN, you can also see their temporary expositions.

14. Explore the Tatra Mountains

This mountain range, part of the Carpathian Mountains, is located near the border of Poland and Slovakia. It’s here where you’ll find Tatra National Park (a protected UNESCO site), a great destination for hiking. Spanning over 200 square kilometers (77 square miles), there are plenty of day hikes available ranging from 2-12 hours. While you can’t camp in the park, there are mountain huts if you book in advance (they cost 35-70 PLN per night depending on where you stay). Make sure you check the weather before you go and bring ample water and sunscreen for your hike.

15. Take in the Warsaw Rising Museum

This museum is a tribute to the people of Warsaw who fought and died for Polish independence. Opened in 2004, the museum is home to hundreds of artifacts from the uprising of 1944, when Polish citizens rebelled against German occupation. The uprising lasted 63 days and was the largest resistance movement during World War II. Some 15,000 members of the Polish resistance were killed, as well as 2,000-17,000 German troops. There are weapons, clothing, letters, and interactive films that shed light on one of the most important events in Polish history. Admission is 25 PLN.

16. Tour Schlinder’s Factory

Oskar Schindler was a German industrialist who saved over 1,200 Jews during the war. His story was made famous by Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film, Schindler’s List . Located in his actual factory in Krakow, this museum offers a thorough trip through the history of World War II, highlighting how he saved so many people during the war while bankrupting himself in the process. Admission starts at 10 PLN or 72 PLN for a guided tour. There are a number of limited free tickets on Mondays.

Poland Travel Costs

Accommodation – A bed in a dorm with 8-10 beds costs 55-95 PLN per night. Private rooms cost 120-200 PLN. Free Wi-Fi is standard and most hostels also have self-catering facilities. Free breakfast is available at many hostels too.

Budget two-star hotels start at 150-275 PLN per night. Free Wi-Fi is common and many hotels also include a simple free breakfast as well. For a three-star hotel, expect to pay at least 300-500 PLN.

Airbnb is available throughout the country with private rooms starting at 75 PLN per night while entire homes/apartments cost at least 100 PLN. Prices are usually double these numbers, however, so be sure to book early to find the best deals.

There are plenty of campgrounds throughout the country for those traveling with a tent. Expect to pay around 40 PLN per night for a basic tent plot for two people without electricity. Wild camping is tolerated if you’re in the mountains and as long as you are not in a national park (camping in national parks is strictly prohibited in Poland).

Food – Polish meals are quite hearty, usually containing potatoes, meat (pork and chicken), and seasonal produce like beets or cabbage. Stews and soups (like borscht, a beet soup) are popular and can be found at most local restaurants. Pierogis are also a common staple and can be found everywhere for cheap. For some traditional Polish food, try beef tongue or pork knuckles. The country also has lots of traditional desserts too, like paczki (a Polish donut) and makowiec (poppy-seed cake).

Most cheap meals of traditional cuisine (served at local restaurants called bar mleczny or “milk bars”) cost around 35 PLN. For a three-course meal with a drink and table service, expect to pay around 75 PLN. Fast food (think McDonald’s) costs 25 PLN for a combo meal.

A large pizza costs around 25-30 PLN while Chinese food costs around 15-20 PLN. Zapiekanki , a popular Polish street snack that’s like a pizza on a baguette, costs 5-6 PLN.

Beer costs 8-12 PLN, while a glass of wine is a minimum of 12 PLN. A latte or cappuccino is around 11 PLN. Bottled water is 5 PLN.

If you buy your own groceries and cook your meals, expect to pay around 150-165 PLN per week for basic staples like pasta, rice, seasonal vegetables, and some meat. Local markets are the cheapest places to buy fresh produce. Biedronka is a cheap grocery store that’s everywhere.

Backpacking Poland Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget of 175 PLN per day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, cook all your meals, limit your drinking, take public transportation to get around, and do some cheap activities like free walking tours and visiting the free museums. If you plan on drinking, add 10-20 PLN to your budget per day.

On a mid-range budget of 330 PLN per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb or private hostel room, eat out for most meals at cheap milk bars, enjoy a couple of drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like visiting the Uprising Museum or taking a tour of Auschwitz.

On a “luxury” budget of 600 PLN or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out anywhere you want, drink more, rent a car to get around, and do whatever guided tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in PLN.

Poland Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Poland is a very affordable country so there aren’t too many tips out there to help you save. You won’t be spending a lot of money anyways unless you go out of your way to spend money. That being said, there are still a few extra ways you can save money while you visit Poland:

• Eat at milk bars – You’ll get a taste of Poland at a mleczny (milk bars). Hearty pierogis, homemade soups, plenty of meat, and a local beer usually cost around 30 PLN. While they are a no-frills choice, the food is tasty and filling.
• Get a tourist card – Certain cities, like Krakow and Warsaw, offer tourist cards that provide unlimited public transportation and free or discounted museum access. If you plan to see lots of sites, be sure to go to the local tourism office and pick up one of these cards. They usually cost 100-160 PLN.
• Take advantage of train specials – Poland has various special train tickets that can save you money during your visit. For example, the Weekend Ticket ( Bilet Weekendowy ) is available for several train lines and lasts from Friday night at 7pm to Monday at 6am and allows for unlimited trips within Poland. It’s a great way to see the country if you need to cover a lot of ground in a short time!
• Watch your drinking – Cities like Krakow are known for their parties, pub crawls, and long nights out. These can add up quickly, so watch how much you drink. Start off by grabbing your favorite drinks from a grocery store first whenever possible. You’ll save a ton that way.
• Take a free walking tour – Free tours from companies like Walkative can be found in Poland’s larger cities. They are a great way to explore the city while learning about the history, culture, and architecture. Just be sure to tip!
• Use ridesharing apps – Ridesharing apps like BlaBlaCar are a great way to get around the country for cheap. You simply download the app, find someone looking for passengers, pay a small fee, and go! Everyone is rated and verified, and it’s usually more convenient (and cheaper) than other forms of transportation. For travel within a city, use Uber. It’s cheaper than the local taxis.
• Stay with a local – While accommodation is not expensive in Poland, Couchsurfing is a great way to lower your accommodation costs. Not only will you save money by getting a free place to stay but you’ll also be able to make a local friend and get insider knowledge about the country.
• Bike share – For 10 PLN, you can register for Vetrulio, a bike-rental company in Warsaw. After you sign up, bike use is free for 20 minutes, making it essentially free to bounce around the city during your visit. After 20 minutes (up to the first hour) it’s just 1 PLN and then 3 PLN for the next hour.
• Bring a water bottle – The tap water in Poland is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay in Poland

Accommodation in Poland is very affordable. Even if you don’t want to do the whole hostel thing, you can find really comfortable and inexpensive hotels throughout the country. Here are some of my favorite places to stay in Poland:

How to Get Around Poland

Public transportation – Buses and trams are the most common ways to get around in each city. Only Warsaw has a subway system. Public buses and trams cost around 3-5 PLN for a one-way ride, depending on how far you go. For a single-day pass, expect prices to start at 15 PLN per person. In Warsaw, a three-day public transportation pass starts at 36 PLN.

Bus – Poland has an extensive bus network so you can easily travel around the entire country by bus if you’re on a budget. Flixbus (and its partner company, Polski Bus) are the best options as they have comfortable buses for affordable prices. For example, the 4-hour journey from Warsaw to Krakow costs around 44 PLN while the 7-hour ride to Gdansk from Warsaw costs around 50 PLN.

The buses have bathrooms, electrical outlets, and Wi-Fi, making them a good choice for budget travelers.

Train – While trains aren’t as cheap as buses, they’re a good option for long-distance trips. There are several different companies operating trains here with a variety of train types. The three most important to travelers are the ExpressInterCity Premium (EIP), ExpressInterCity (EIC), and InterCity (IC).

The EIP trains are fast and operate between major cities. They have first-class and second-class seats and reservations are mandatory. These are the newest trains and have a dining car if you’re looking to eat during your trip. They can be pricey if you book on the day, so try to book in advance for the best prices.

EIC trains also run between major cities but are a little slower. They are still perfectly safe and comfortable, with a dining car and business class seats available. Since the services aren’t as great, the prices here are lower than on EIP trains. There are first- and second-class seats as well.

IC trains are the cheapest of the three but also the slowest as they make more stops. They have basic amenities such as power outlets.

InterRegio (IR) trains are another option as they stop in most medium-sized cities. There are no first-class or seat reservations here, so they can be a bit busier and sometimes won’t have space for luggage. But they are affordable!

The train from Warsaw to Gdansk costs around 175 PLN and takes around 2.5 hours while the 2-hour train from Warsaw to Krakow is just 50 PLN.

Flying – Flying around Poland is relatively cheap thanks to budget airlines like Ryanair. From Warsaw, you can get to pretty much any city in the country for under 325 PLN, round trip.

For example, Warsaw to Krakow takes just under an hour and costs 280 PLN while Warsaw to Gdansk takes an hour and costs 180 PLN.

It’s also easy to get to/from Poland via plane as Wizz and Ryanair fly all over the continent. You can find flights for as little as 50 PLN to destinations all around Europe if you book early and are flexible.

Rideshare – BlaBlaCar is the best ride-sharing option for intercity travel. It’s cheap and fast, and drivers are verified and have reviews so it’s quite safe. Just make sure you have flexible plans as drivers are often late or change their plans entirely.

Car rental – Car rentals start at 75 PLN per day for a multi-day rental. Drivers must have had their license for at least one year and an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for citizens of certain countries.

When to Go to Poland

The best (and most popular) time to visit Poland is during the summer, from June to August. Temperatures are hot and rain is infrequent. Expect daily highs between 17-25°C (63-77°F) during this time (and a 1-3 degree difference between Gdansk in the north to Krakow in the south).

The summer is also the busiest time of the year for tourism, though and you’ll only really notice it in the main tourist cities (such as Warsaw and Krakow).

The shoulder season of late April-May and September-October are great times to visit as well, with temperatures ranging from 5-15°C (41-59°F). You’ll beat the crowd and have much milder temperatures. There’s more rain in the spring but you’ll get the stunning autumn colors in the fall which makes for a scenic backdrop to your trip.

Winter in Poland can be quite cold, with temperatures dropping to around -1°C (30°F) during the day and -5°C (23°F) overnight. Snow is common, which can affect conditions if you’re traveling by car. In short, I wouldn’t recommend a winter visit unless you plan on going skiing or taking part in other winter activities such as visiting the Christmas markets.

How to Stay Safe in Poland

Poland is a very safe country. The risk of theft or getting pickpocketed is much lower here than it is in other parts of Europe. Of course, you should always keep your valuables secure and out of sight when riding public transportation and while you’re in popular tourist areas.

Taxi scams are rare, but always make sure your driver is using the meter. If they aren’t, ask them to stop and find a taxi that will. To avoid fake taxis, have your hotel/hostel staff call a taxi for you to ensure you aren’t scammed.

ATM skimming (when criminals attach a covert device to an ATM that can steal your information) can occur here, so always make sure you use verified ATMs. If you can, go into the bank to withdraw your money (as opposed to using outdoor ATMs, which are easier to tamper with).

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone at night intoxicated, etc.).

If you rent a vehicle here, don’t leave any valuables in it overnight. Break-ins are rare but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Is Poland Cheap? The Cost of a Trip to Poland in 2024

Poland is well-known as one of the cheapest destinations to travel to in Europe – but are the prices in Poland really as low as everybody says? Is Poland cheap to visit?

When I first heard these rumours I was sceptical too. However, after going on three different trips to Poland now, to Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan, Wroclaw, and Gdansk, I can now officially confirm that, yes, it is cheap to travel to Poland , no matter what your travel style is!

It’s important to note when I refer to “cheap”, I definitely don’t mean bad quality. In fact, Poland is one of the best countries in Europe when it comes to fun and exciting travel experiences! Poland is just great value for money, and there’s nothing wrong with that AT. ALL!

In this blog post, I’m going to provide a comprehensive, detailed guide to prices in Poland , and how much travel costs there, to help you decide on how much money to take to Poland.

All of these examples are pulled from my extensive travels in Poland over the years. I’ll also include examples of prices I have actually paid in Poland, to give you some examples of what things cost for tourists.

Top tip: The Polish Zloty (PLN) is the money used in Poland , but I have listed most of the prices in this post in Euros to keep everything simple.

Where I’ve Been In Poland

Obviously, Poland is a huge country, and prices aren’t the same across the entire country. In general, though, Poland is not expensive for tourists and prices are generally low. 

I have visited Poland once in summer , once in autumn , and once in winter , and it’s fair to say that the cost of accommodation is definitely higher in summer, and drops quite a bit in winter.

If you can brave the winter in Poland , you can make some big savings!

Here is where I’ve visited in Poland so far, including how long I spent there:

Gdansk: 4 days, 3 nights

Krakow: 5 days, 4 nights (steal my Krakow itinerary here! )

Wroclaw: 2 days, 2 nights (steal my Wroclaw itinerary here! )

Poznan: 2 days, 2 nights (steal my Poznan itinerary here! )

Warsaw: 1 day, 0 nights

Bringing me to a grand total of 14 days spent in Poland!

Obviously, I haven’t travelled across the entirety of Poland (that would take months!) but I have definitely spent more time there than most travellers.

I have visited enough places in Poland to get a good feel for the prices, and how much your Poland trip should cost.

Price of Accommodation in Poland

Across all Polish cities you can expect to spend around €35 to €40 per night for either a hotel room or an entire apartment.

Hostels cost an average of €12 per night for a bed in a dorm room, but these prices climb during summer when the Interrailers hit Poland’s hostels.

Accommodation is one of the biggest expenses you’ll encounter when you travel, but luckily, in Poland, it’s nothing to lose sleep over.

There are a tonne of budget accommodation options in Poland, and the quality of the budget accommodation in this country is second to none.

In most other countries in Europe, €40 per night for a hotel room would get you a dingy, damp room in a dodgy area of the city. In Poland, I could easily get a hotel room of similar quality to something I’d normally pay €80 per night for in a Western European city like Madrid !

I found accommodation in Warsaw and Krakow to be *slightly* more expensive than other cities in Poland, given that they’re the most popular tourist cities to visit, but they’re not too different. Overall Krakow is cheap still, and so is Warsaw.

Winter in Poland can be brutal, so I noticed that the cost of accommodation in Poland drops slightly during this time, probably to entice visitors. Poland is one of my favourite places to go for a budget Christmas Markets trip in Europe!

Although it’s a cold and dark time of the year to visit, winter could be the perfect solution if you want to visit Poland on a tight budget!

My Recommendations For Budget Accommodation:

These are the places I have stayed in Poland, and I can recommend all of them!

Gdansk : I visited Gdansk with a friend and we stayed at this budget-friendly hotel . We were very impressed with its proximity to the city centre, which was just a short walk away from the hotel, and Gdansk’s famous WW2 Museum, which we could see from our window!

At around €47 per night split between the two of us, so €23.50 each . I can definitely recommend this place if you’re visiting Gdansk on a budget.

Krakow : I visited Krakow solo and decided to stay at this kick-ass hostel . Not only did it include free breakfast, free dinner, and an hour of free beer each night, but I also met a tonne of new friends – I highly recommend it for solo travellers.

Its location was perfect, right in the middle of Krakow’s Old Town. For just €15 per night for a bed in a 6-person dorm, I found it to be brilliant value!

Wroclaw : In Wroclaw I stayed in these amazing apartments , just a 6-minute walk from the centre of town. I found there were more budget accommodation options in Wroclaw and Poznan than Krakow and Gdansk, probably because these cities are less famous with tourists.

I also found the quality you get for what you pay for is slightly better. My boyfriend and I had our own kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom, all for €50 per night , so €25 each .

Poznan : I stayed in this incredible apartment with my boyfriend that we never wanted to leave! The decor in this place was just stunning, and when I saw that huge bathtub it was love at first sight!

I paid €45 per night , and since I was travelling with my boyfriend we split the price between the two of us, so €22.50 each . This was (again) crazy good value. The apartment was right on the city’s main square. You simply couldn’t get a better location!

The average cost of accommodation in Poland is €22.50 per day.

Cost of Food & Drink in Poland

The cost of food and drink in Poland for tourists is very low. That’s good because chances are you’ll be eating and drinking a lot of it.

Polish alcohol and food is just irresistibly delicious!

A coffee and a pastry at a Polish bakery will cost around €2 . If you can skip the coffee (which I certainly can’t!) you can get a good quality pastry for around €0.50 . Coffee at a higher-end coffee shop will cost you around €2.50 .

For breakfast, you can’t go wrong with heading to a bakery . There are lots to choose from in each Polish city, and they serve lots of pastries and coffee. You probably won’t recognise most of the pastries, or know what’s inside them, but that’s part of the fun!

If you’re staying in one place for a while, the most affordable breakfast you can get will be from the supermarket, where you can purchase cereal and milk, or bread and jam, for next to nothing.

Lunch and Dinner

Expect to spend around €6 on lunch at an affordable restaurant in Poland, with a couple Euros extra if you’re having drinks too. The cost of food in Poland for tourists is generally low.

Portions are generally large, so I recommend eating a meal at a restaurant for either lunch or dinner and then having something light for the other meal – you’ll be too full otherwise!

I didn’t notice much of a price variation for food and drink across Poland (although, surprisingly, beer was very slightly more expensive in Krakow – but obviously still cheap).

Across the whole of Poland you’ll find the cheapest food in Milk Bars ( bar mleczny ) which are canteen-style cafes serving traditional food.

Here are some examples of what I paid for different dishes in Poland:

• Zurek soup served in a bread bowl (Wroclaw) = €5.70
• Huge pork knuckle dish (Poznan) = €9.25
• Plate of 8 pierogi (Warsaw) = €5.75
• Cheese, noodle and bacon soup (Zakopane) = €3.30
• Schabowy, a Polish version of Schnitzel (Gdansk) = €6.40
• Plate of Pierogi Ruskie at a Milk Bar (Krakow) = €1.60

My top tip is to always ask the locals where they eat. This little trick led me to the best pierogi spot in Poznan, tucked away from the usual tourist trail and with some of the cheapest prices in town!

Cost of Drinks in Poland

The cost of beer in Poland is great! The average price of a beer in a bar in Poland is around €2.40 , whilst from the supermarket beer will cost around €0.75 .

Beer is cheap in Poland, and you can find it everywhere. It’s even cheaper from the supermarket too! It’d be criminal to miss out on trying some Polish vodka whilst you’re in Poland, but the good news is that’s also very affordable.

Here are some examples of what I paid for different drinks in Poland:

• 1-litre glass of Pilsner beer (Wroclaw) = €4
• 500ml glass of Lech beer (Poznan) = €2.85
• Can of Tyskie Beer from Supermarket (Gdansk) = €0.70
• 500ml glass of Żywiec beer (Krakow) = €2.65
• Single shot of Hazelnut vodka (Poznan) =  €1.30

Price of Activities in Poland

Most things to do in Polish cities are very cheap – museums typically cost just a couple of Euros to enter.

This is a pleasant surprise compared to cities in Western Europe, where you can easily spend over €100 in just one short break on museum admission alone!

There are some more expensive museums to enter, but they are always the bigger, famous museums of Poland that you simply can’t miss. Museums like this cost around €8 to enter.

Examples of these more expensive museums are the WW2 museum in Gdansk, the Warsaw Uprising Museum in Warsaw and the Schindler’s Factory in Krakow.

Polish Old Towns are delightfully pretty, and you can explore those for free . There is also no shortage of beautiful parks, viewpoints and war memorials, and other things you can do for free , which also have a lot to offer as cultural attractions. 

There are a few big-ticket attractions in Poland and you’ll probably pay for a tour to visit them. These activities are therefore more expensive, but, again, absolutely worth it. Surprisingly, most of these attractions are day trips from Krakow .

On these day tours, you can expect to pay between €45 and € 70 , but usually that includes pretty much everything for the day.

Examples of day tours you can’t miss include visiting the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp from Krakow, visiting the mountain town of Zakopane from Krakow, and visiting Ksiaz Castle from Wroclaw.

So yeah, the cost of travel in Poland when it comes to activities and things to do is generally cheap.

Price of Transportation in Poland

City Public Transportation 

Aside from Warsaw, which is a huge city, most cities in Poland are walkable , with Poznan, Gdansk and Wroclaw in particular being perfect for exploring on foot.

For this reason, once you’ve arrived in a city, you shouldn’t really need to use public transportation all that often. 

Accommodation outside of the city centre may be *slightly* cheaper but, given the already cheap accommodation prices, it’s not worth the extra hassle and potential cost of having to buy transportation tickets into the city every day.

Warsaw is a whole different beast, and unless you want to walk 20km per day during your trip you’ll have to use transportation.

However, public transportation routes between different attractions were rarely direct, so I opted to use the app FreeNow to book taxis. It seems to be more popular in Poland than Uber, and it’s very, very cheap.

I’ve used FreeNow in three different Polish cities, and I’ve always been very happy with it. To give you an idea of prices, here’s what I paid for a few different journeys.

Bear in mind that I was travelling with my boyfriend when I used FreeNow, so we got to split these prices!

• Taxi in Warsaw (3.5km) = €3.25
• Taxi in Poznan (3km) = €4
• Taxi from Warsaw centre to Airport (10km) = €7.63

Intercity Trains

When it comes to getting from place to place in Poland, the train system is comprehensive, usually reliable, and cheap.

You can buy first or second class tickets, but I have always opted for second class and it’s absolutely fine. 

To give you an idea of prices, here is what I paid for a few train journeys in Poland:

• Single ticket from Wroclaw to Poznan (2 hours) = €8.20
• Single ticket from Poznan to Warsaw during peak time (2 hours) = €21
• Single ticket from Rzeszow to Krakow (1 hour 30 minutes) = €6.90

Buses and Planes

You can also use buses to get from city to city via Flixbus and other similar operators, but from my experience they’re not much cheaper than the train and take longer. 

Internal flights do exist in Poland, but for some reason it’s much cheaper to fly internationally.

For this reason, unless you’re in a rush or need to cover a large distance it’s better to take the train.

If you book at least a few weeks in advance you’ll find internal flights for around €35 .

Flights to Poland

The cost of your flights to and from Poland can either be the biggest expense of your trip, or less than it’ll cost you to get to the airport, depending on where you’re flying from.

From the UK and other European countries you can fly to Poland for as little as €3 each way . 

Yes. I’m not kidding! I’ve genuinely seen flights this cheap!

It can be cheaper to fly to some of Poland’s lesser-known destinations, such as Wroclaw, Bydgoszcz or Poznań, since the demand for these flights is lower, but you’ll still find crazy-cheap flights to Krakow and Warsaw.

My number one tip for flights to Poland from Europe is to book them around 4-6 weeks in advance .

From my experience, this is the sweet spot.

Any further in advance and I find that Ryanair’s prices are higher. You can definitely book flights closer to the date (even a few days in advance) for very cheap, but obviously that’s a risky move.

From the US, chances are you’ll fly into Warsaw, and you can get return flights for as low as $500 if you’re savvy.

I find all my flight deals through Skyscanner, so I recommend that you hop over there to get a better idea of how much flights will cost from your city.

• Four beers at a bar or restaurant (hey, I’m not judging!) = €10.80
• Entry to one big museum, and other free attractions = €8

Total average Poland travel cost for one day = €57.80

Obviously, this is a budget based on basically doing whatever you want, without worrying about money too much.

If you’re budget-conscious you could definitely cut your daily spending money for Poland down to €25 per day . You’d do this by staying at hostels, only eating at Milk Bars, only visiting free or very cheap attractions and buying your beer from the grocery store.

• One of the unexplored gems in Poland is in Ojcow. The Ojcow Castle and National Park are sometimes overlooked attractions that should be added to your itinerary. To get there, catch a flight from London to Kraków John Paul II International Airport (KRK) and then make the 35-minute trip to Ojcow directly from the airport on one of the public transport modes like the airport train service.
• Unlike other places in Europe, it is illegal to consume alcohol in the streets of Poland, so if you are flying into any airport in Poland it would be safest to keep any alcohol you have purchased on the plane or at duty-free sealed and in its original packaging until you get to your accommodation.
• Flights to Poland usually land in Warsaw. Warsaw is a great place to start your holiday in Poland due to its central location, which makes it easy for you to travel around Poland. From Warsaw, you can easily take domestic flights or trains to cities such as Bydgoszcz, Gdańsk, Katowice, Krakow, Lodz, Poznań, Rzeszów, Szczecin, Wrocław and Zielona Góra. The two international airports in Warsaw are Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) and Warsaw Modlin Airport (WMI). Most international flights land at Warsaw Chopin Airport, while budget airlines usually land at Warsaw Modlin Airport.
• If you are looking to visit Poland’s most popular tourist attractions, like the Town Square, Wawel Castle and Kazimierz, you should consider flights to Poland that land in Krakow. The main airport in Krakow is John Paul II International Airport (KRK).
• If you are looking for a seaside vacation, Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport is the place to fly to. Located near the Baltic coast of Poland, Gdańsk is the perfect base for a retreat to the seaside.
• As a British citizen, you do not currently need a visa to travel to Poland. It may be worth checking the government website for the most-up-to-date information on travel to Poland and within the Schengen zone.
• The currency used in Poland is the Polish Zloty. You can exchange pounds for zloty in Poland or in the UK, however Scottish and Northern Irish notes are not accepted for exchange in Poland.

Top 5 airlines flying to Poland

The food was ok. The crew seemed like they were cranky. I had one guy get mad at me for passing in between the storage area to get to the other toilet. I can understand if it's not allowed but reprimanding me like I'm a student saying "This is the last time!" was not appropriate. During my meal time, there was a French family around me. No problems there but when we usually have meals, they are supposed to put their chair in the upright position. These people did not do it and the steward did not tell them to raise their seat in the upright position. However, I was told to do so! So, me and another person next to me had to eat with the monitor almost touching our faces. Furthermore, a lady in front of me was putting her feet up and preventing another elder passenger from putting her seat back. To make it worse, she was continuously hitting her back into her seat, shaking my monitor while I was watching a movie. A crew member did speak to her about it but then she accused me of pushing her seat forward! The crew member gave me a death stare and told me to stop pushing the seat forward. I did not even touch her seat at all, if I did, she would know it. Her boyfriend also stood up and tried to push her seat even further past the maximum decline to no avail. None of these people were reprimanded but the steward, some bald guy, was extremely friendly with them and did not even try to instruct them to do anything until it was time to land. I resisted the urge to really argue with them because I would have obviously been seen as the aggressor (I have no idea why). I hardly said anything on this flight except "more wine please" and "sorry" if I bumped into someone accidentally. Overall, it was an annoying flight and I had to resist the urge to yell at the steward and the people he was overly friendly with. The happiest moment of this flight was leaving it.

I travel frequently. The flight was late again... KLM should really try and be on time

The flight itself it was great nice food the crew were very nice and helpful, Checking in from Birmingham wasn't great long queues for bag dropped, And I had my hand luggage case taken away from me even though I requested to have it with me as I had breakables items. I was told I can not because of the length of the flight with no explanation at all no options was given for me to take my fragile items out of my case it was taken away with hold buggage I find the staff member who was checking me in very unpleasant !! Can we please be advise if the rules have changed about the the carry on hand luggage it will be easier to be advise on booking your tickect if we not allowed to take the hand luggage with me. Overall I had a good flight .

The plane was clean and the staff was friendly. Food and drinks as expected on international flights. The entertainment system was old style, with a pullout controller, and selections not as extensive as on other flights.

I requested wheel chair assistance , it was confirmed via email that inwoood get it but I didn’t get it . The last leg of my trip to Nigeria was the worst.

Boarding in NCL is really bad. I'm sure part of that is a directive from the airport that KLM can't change but part of that is due to KLM policy. NCL doesn't announce the gate of departure until 30 minutes before departure. However, when you arrive at the gate area, the gate agents file everyone into one long line and everyone boards from one line at one time. This line can stretch for 200m...easily. There is a separate line for groups 1 and 2 but you don't know it until you get to the gate area and agents don't announce/advertise it. Everyone else is grouped into one line. Are you in group 3? Doesn't matter...you board with group 5. Traveling with a child? Tough luck...you're stuck at the end of the line and board last. The last part is very annoying because none of the gates at NCL (with the exception of 1 used by Emirates) has a jetway. To board, you must leave the gate area, walk downstairs, walk onto the tarmac and walk up stairs to board the plane. Highly challenging if you're traveling with small children. That boarding process begs for a concession to allow people with children to board first because they will need extra time. But there is no such policy. Just a really horrible boarding experience all around.

LOT airlines wasn't the best. They had trouble with boarding and they didn't have my information on file the right way. They change last minute details without us knowing and everything was a HOT MESS. Lot airlines also lost my baggae which was the carseat and haven't responded to any of my emails.

The worst experience ever! They never told me I had to transfer my ticket at the ticket transfer counter. They moved me to a flight leaving the next day, which was also heavily delayed. Garbage airline at a premium price. Both ways was unable to purchase seats before checking. Called, messaged on Facebook, and emailed. All three times staff said I could, and gave me form responses on how to, despite providing screenshots/explaining beforehand showing I couldn't. At check-in both times they sat me and my wife separately, despite booking together. Both legs the USB port in my entertainment system was broken. Food is atrocious. Seats are old and uncomfortable, and struggle to adjust. Toilets were like portapotties at a concert.

Would have liked to have Wi-Fi on the longer flight (nyc-Warsaw)

My flight was cancelled and I went through hell to get it fixed, with no help from the website I booked it on. My reservation was cancelled AGAIN by the site I booked on without my knowledge a week later. The flight itself that I finally got on was awful. Drunk man belligerent the entire flight, I don't understand how he was allowed on the flight.

I paid a lot of money for seat selection and was miserable for flight duration

Lufthansa lost our luggage. After a lot of chasing on our part we got it back. The main problem is that there was no office in Bogota to help us outside of flighttimes. The customer service phone lines had no data on our luggage. I think Lufthansa need to invest in managing communications over lost luggage or this will end with everyone taking more luggage out of hold.

The usual average Ryanair flight, but we landed 20 min before due time, which was very good.

You get what you pay for with RyanAir. This was a €60 round trip from Stockholm and every piece of it was just excruciating, from the plane being delayed by more than an hour, to having to stand out on the tarmac in the darkness at 3C and wind to wait for the plane to disembark its previous flight (why they do this is just cruel), to the crew keeping the lights on the entire flight despite it being so late so they could walk through the aisles and try to sell things. I always say “never again!” after flying RyanAir, but somehow end up getting lured by the prices…

Enjoyed our flight with Ryanair to Arrecife. Flight boarded pretty much on time, crew were welcoming and very good. Generally good for a frequent low cost flight, Seats could however have been more comfortable.

I wouldn't like to fly with them anymore, I don't like their service, you can hardly take carry-on luggage because they charge you for everything, you can't ask for a glass of water, and the flight attendant tells you that they don't have any, that you have to Paying 3 euros for a bottle of water horrible, I don't recommend it, and they don't have anything low cost, because the plane ticket may not be expensive but what they charge you later for the rest, the flight becomes more expensive, it's the only airline that I don't like it so far, and I traveled a lot.

Got rejected to enter the plane because i took calming pills. Im scared of flying and i always take it since 12 years and it was never a problem with other airlines.

Shambolic boarding with ZERO information on why there was a delay. Don't treat customers like sheep. Crew good. Aircraft new. Late departure with minimal information from flight deck.

Is Poland Cheap? How to Travel on a Budget in 2024

Whether you are considering Poland as your main summer destination, or just a quick weekend stopover on a longer European trip, Poland is an amazing place to travel if you have limited funds! Poland has budget options for cash-strapped university students (like me) and family trips alike, in all cities, from Warsaw to Gdańsk.  

Generally speaking, the cost of food and lodging in Poland is cheaper than in other, more-popular European summer destinations such as France or Germany. Additionally, there are many ways you can make your stay even cheaper if you make some adjustments and are willing to be flexible! 

In this guide to Poland on a budget, you will find the following:

• Information on the cost of traveling in Poland, with a brief comparison to other major travel destinations, such as New York and Paris.
• As a self-proclaimed “novice expert” on traveling and living in Poland, I will provide some tips and tricks to make your hard-earned Złoty go even farther.

The Cost of Traveling in Poland

Currency and payments.

The most important money-related thing to remember when traveling to Poland is that they do not use the Euro like other EU countries. They use the Złoty. 4 Złoty is about 1 euro. So, remember that the 3 Złoty bottle of water is actually cheaper than a Euro.

However, in most touristy places in Poland, you should not need cash. Almost all restaurants, hotels, shops, and even public transportation, accept major credit cards, such as Visa and Mastercard, or contactless payment. The only cases I personally have ever had to use cash in Poland are to pay for a public bathroom, or a taxi. However, even some taxis in Poland except card.

If you do choose to withdraw cash, always remember the costs associated with using a foreign ATM. I recommend using a Polish bank’s ATM for safety purposes, just in case your card gets stuck. Also, NEVER accept the exchange rate that the ATM offers you. Every time this is done, you risk losing an added 10-15% of the amount you withdraw in fees. Let your bank decide the exchange rate for you.

General Costs

Relatively speaking, Poland is a very budget-friendly country to travel to, based on the cost of certain every-day purchases. The table above shows that Poland is much more inexpensive compared to popular destinations such as Paris, London, Barcelona, or Berlin, and on the same level of other budget-friendly destinations such as Lisbon. If you are coming from the US, Poland is overall cheaper than the cheapest large city in the US (although Tulsa, OK is certainly not a tourist hotspot).

However, there are of course city differences within Poland. For example, Warsaw, Poland’s capital, and most expensive city, is quite a bit more expensive than a less-popular destination such as Poznań. In spite of this, Warsaw is still cheaper than a majority of European destinations!  A warning to the wise is never mention this to local Polish people if you want to make friends, as Poland is not as cheap for locals as for tourists.

Cost Breakdowns

Next, I will break down the cost of tourist-related activities, such as accommodations and transportation, to help you get a better idea of how much money you will spend in each area!

Cheap Accommodations in Poland

Choosing accommodation in Poland depends on whether you are a solo-traveler, couple, or family. Generally speaking, the best options for accommodation in Poland, from least-expensive to most, are hostels, Airbnbs, and hotels. 

As a former solo-traveler through Poland, I would recommend staying in the many hostels dotted around major Polish cities . On Hostelworld, you will find hostels ranging from 20-30 euros per night during the peak summer months, which is by far the most cost-effective method of staying in Poland. Additionally, many of these hostels will be in central locations of Polish cities, meaning you will save money on transportation as well. Also, in the off-season, these dorms can get as cheap as 15 euros per night! Hostels also offer private dorms, that can range in cost from 32-80 euros, depending on the season. Hostels are unfortunately not an option if you have kids, as most, if not all, hostels have an 18+ age rule.

Another option as a solo-traveler is to consider renting a room on Airbnb. Many Poles offer their spare bedrooms in their apartments to travelers, and these options tend to be very cost-effective, although less so than a hostel. I was able to stay in an extra room with a lovely Polish couple, and it only cost me 30 euros per night. I had access to everything in their home except their bedroom, which allowed me to cook and save more money.

If you are a traveling couple, group of friends, or family, an Airbnb might be the best choice. You can get full apartments with multiple beds in the range of 60-150 euros per night, depending on the location, amenities, and age of the building. Some cities have even cheaper apartments, such as Poznań, and Gdańsk. In Gdańsk, it is even possible to get a room in a brand-new apartment building for as low as 40 euros per night in the offseason.

But, if you prefer the comfort and convenience of hotels, they are still cheaper in Poland than in other cities. While they are not the most cost-effective method, if you are willing to stay outside of the city center, you can find hotel rooms for 65-85 euros per night. While you will spend extra time traveling, the amount spent on this travel will certainly be less than the cost of staying in the pricier hotels in the city center. 

Transportation

Getting around the large cities of Poland is simple due to the very efficient public transportation available. Additionally, there are a variety of trains that can get you almost anywhere in Poland. So, you should never need to rent a car! Not only will you save money on insurance, petrol, and parking, you will help contribute to keeping the beautiful green spaces of Poland green for years to come.

Arriving in Poland

Most important to consider is how you arrive to Poland. Planes are certainly a budget-efficient possibility. Low-cost airlines such as Wizz Air and Ryanair fly to many destinations in Poland. With Wizz Air specifically, you can reach Gdańsk, Lublin, Poznań, Katowice (with Kraków not too far away), Warsaw, and Wrocław. Ryanair especially conducts many flights from Warsaw to other parts of Europe, so it is possible to use Warsaw as a central point of travel to other parts in Poland, taking advantage of the many trains that leave to all corners of Poland every day from Warszawa Centralna station.

If you consider using Warsaw as your entry point to the country, make sure to check which airport you are flying to, because Warsaw has two airports. The main airport, Chopin Airport, is within the city limits, a rarity in European cities! Thus, there are city buses, such as Bus 175, that can take you directly to downtown, the main train station, or the historic Old Town directly from the airport. There are also commuter trains included in the basic transportation card that get you to other parts of Warsaw. Wizz Air is the main budget airline at Chopin, flying to popular destinations such as London-Luton, Paris-Orly, and Rome.

However, most budget flights into Warsaw (and Poland in general) fly into Warsaw Modlin airport. Ryanair is the only airline that flies in and out of this airport found 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Warsaw. While this is not as convenient as flying into Chopin, there is regular bus/train service leaving to and from Warszawa Gdańska station for about 5 euros each way. Destinations from this airport include Barcelona, London-Stansted, and Vienna. 

Other Polish airports with budget opportunities include Wrocław, with Ryanair flying from Athens, London-Stansted, Rome-Ciampino, and more. Wizz Air also flies to Wrocław from Barcelona-El Prat, London-Luton, and Reykjavík, amongst other locations. To Gdańsk, you can fly from Barcelona-Reus, Hamburg, Paris-Beauvais, and more with Ryanair, while with Wizz Air you can fly from Barcelona-El Prat, Hamburg, London-Gatwick, and more. Finally, in Kraków, with Ryanair you can fly from Barcelona-El Prat, Berlin, London-Luton and more, and with Wizz Air from Barcelona, London-Gatwick, Milan-Malpensa and more. All these airports are found outside of the city limits, but there are cost-effective buses and trains to get you to the center and avoid paying an arm and leg for a taxi.

If the planes seem too expensive to you still, consider including a destination near Poland into your itinerary. From cities such as Berlin, Vienna, and Budapest, you can take an intercity train or bus into many cities in Poland. While this will add time to your journey, the trains are more than comfortable, and usually on-time. I have taken the train between Warsaw and Berlin 4 separate time, and I have no complaints. You can also take advantage of the regular FlixBus service into Poland for the cheapest bus tickets (in my experience).

How to get around Poland on a budget

Congratulations, you have made it to Poland! Now what? As mentioned previously, renting a car is not necessary to getting around Poland, and if you are on a budget, you will spend a lot of money that could go towards activities on having a car. Instead, use the public transportation! There are buses, trams, and regional trains in most cities and metro areas, with Warsaw additionally having two metro lines. 

Every city has transportation websites with ticketing information if you want to know the prices before you go. A one-use 75-minute transport ticket should not cost more than 1 euro. Some cities also offer 24-hr and 72-hr tickets, so if you plan to use public transportation a lot, I would recommend buying one of these. A one-use ticket in Warsaw costs 4.40 Złoty (about 1 euro), but a 24-hour price costs 15 Złoty (about 3 euros). If you ride the public transport more than three times in a day, you will automatically save! 

Also, within Polish cities, you can take advantage of the great biking infrastructure. Bike paths on main arterials are strewn throughout major Polish cities, with many being dedicated bike lanes next to roads, making the experience very safe. You can rent bikes from kiosks throughout major Polish cities. You can also take advantage of e-scooters from companies such as Lime and Bolt, but this option is not as inexpensive. 

Finally, although you should never need to use them, taxis and Ubers can also be used in a pinch. I rarely use taxis, as I prefer the security of booking my price ahead of time. Depending on the time and distance, Ubers can be booked for as little as 5 euros per ride. But, if you find yourself needing a ride home at night and do not want to pay for an Uber, there are often night buses that run to many key locations in major cities. These night buses have the added benefit of being included in your transport ticket if you have chosen to by them. They can be a bit of a crazy experience, but they save you money, so do not discount the opportunity!

Within Poland, you can use the public train system to get between cities. Trains are cost-effective and usually quick. From Warsaw to Gdańsk is three hours on a typical train , and from Warsaw to Wrocław is about four hours. Not only will you save, you will get the added comfort of being able to stretch your legs whilst traveling. Only once has a Polish train I have ridden on been delayed, and this was due to mechanical issues caused by snow and ice.

When booking trains or buses that are run by Polish companies, make sure that when you search on Google, you do not buy from the first website that pops up. These websites are usually third-party websites that have paid to be placed at the top. They will charge you administration and transaction fees on top of the actual fee of the ticket, making a train ticket that might cost 15 euros now cost 25. For trains in Poland, you can buy directly from PKP, the Polish railway company, as early as one month in advance, by visiting https://www.intercity.pl/en/ . 

One final important warning when buying train tickets or local transport tickets is to make sure you buy the right ticket! For example, in Warsaw, there are 2 zones, and unless you plan to go to the suburbs, you only need to by the cheaper Zone 1 ticket! Additionally, you will see the options for discounts. While the internet says you need an ISIC student card to be eligible for the 26-and-under student discount, from my experience, the ticket-checkers only accept valid Polish university IDs. So, learn from my mistake, and just buy the regular-priced ticket unless you are 100% sure that you qualify.

Food on a budget in Poland

Poland has a wide variety of food worth trying. From Pierogi , Gołąbki , Zapiekanki , and Barszcz , Polish food is delicious, filling, and usually low-cost ! Rule number one when eating in a Polish city, like in other countries, is that the closer you are to the city center or some important tourist destination, such as the Old Town in Warsaw, the more expensive the food will be. These places will charge tourist prices, because these tourist districts are too expensive for most locals to live in, and thus tourists are the main source of revenue for these restaurants. Admittedly, tourist prices in Poland are much lower than in other European countries in my experience, but there is still the opportunity to save money on food in Poland.

If you are already staying outside of the city center, try eating at local restaurants near you. If you are in a residential area, these places will charge local prices, and you will save money, while still getting the same quality of food as in the city center. Additionally, if you are staying in a hostel, hotel, or a spare room in someone’s house, do not be afraid to ask the employees about where they like to eat. They will know the spots of the beaten path that still have authentic food for authentic prices. I have found Polish people more than happy to share their recommendations with me, and have ended up at some cool places because of it!

An intriguing possibility for eating cheap in Poland is Milk Bars, or Bar Mleczny in Polish. Milk Bars are styled off Communist era cafeterias, where low-cost food was provided to Poles. Due to nostalgia, Milk Bars made a resounding return to Poland in the last 10 years, and even receive subsidies from the government to keep costs low. Most, if not all, Polish staples will be served here by an old lady or two, giving it the feel that you are eating in a Polish babcia’s home kitchen. Additionally, entrees start as low as 2 euros; you cannot beat the price!

A final choice for eating is to simply cook yourself if you have access to a kitchen. Food prices at the local grocery stores, such as the low-cost store Biedronka (just look for the smiling ladybug) supply every type of food you can imagine (although not at the American level of variety) to cook at home, at prices lower than almost anywhere in Europe. You can also choose to shop at local markets where fresh produce is even cheaper than in the store, but be warned that these sellers will not speak English and will only accept cash.

Communication

I recommend taking advantage of the inexpensive and speedy internet connection available in Poland. Most corner stores sell SIM cards, where you can get a starting 15-day plan for as low as 1 euro! All you need is to bring your passport with you to the story, call a number quickly, and your phone will be connected to the internet. SIM cards in Poland will certainly be cheaper than any international phone plan your wireless company might offer, and cheaper than using roaming on SIM cards bought in other European countries. I recommend Plus as your SIM Card of choice, as it is the easiest to set up.

Tips and Tricks for Traveling on a Budget in Poland

With the more detailed description of costs and options in Poland completed, I would like to provide you with a bulleted list of knowledge I have gained from traveling through Poland, and have learned from the many Polish people around me that I interact with on a daily basis. These tips are if you want to go the extra mile in saving money. I will also summarize the main points from the above information.

• Many museums in Poland have free days that are available to all people, whether you are a tourist or not. For example, the beautiful Wilanów Palace in Warsaw is free on Thursdays. You cannot reserve your free ticket online, but can pick them up at the ticket office on the free day. Be warned that lots of large school groups go on these free days, so I would recommend arriving early on the free days. Also, remember to check the time stamp on your free ticket, because it might not be until two hours in the future depending on how many people are at your attraction that day.
• There is also the chance of engaging in local Polish culture for free. Check tourist websites for major cities to see what opportunities there are available. In Warsaw, you can attend free Chopin piano concerts in Łazienki Park. The largest music festival in Poland, Pol’and’Rock, is free to all attendees. 
• If you are a university student or young adult, I recommend always staying in a hostel. Not only will you save money, many of these hostels supply discounted events for guests, and you also get the chance to meet locals and other students who may know of cheaper budget opportunities.
• If you want to learn an abridged history of a Polish city at a low cost, Google “free walking tour” for the city you plan to go to. This will return available tours in English and other languages. These tours will take you to the main sights in a specific area, such as the Old Towns of Kraków, Gdańsk, or Warsaw. The only cost will be how much to tip the guide at the end of the tour, but this cost is comparatively low to the amount of information you will receive and sights you will see.
• You will see advertisements for Polish nature tourism, with usually ludicrous prices. There is no need to leave Polish cities to take advantage of beautiful nature. All Polish cities have beautiful green spaces that are free to access, and have forests, lakes, streams, wildlife, and more. Warsaw alone is 25% green spaces, meaning you will not have to go far to find a beautiful place to relax. 
• Look into city cards! Most major cities in Europe offer tourists’ cards, and Polish cities are no exception. By my count, Warsaw, Gdańsk, Kraków, Wrocław, Poznań, and Łódź all offer tourist cards. These cards will include admission to many of the main attractions in the respective city, as well as free transportation within the city limits, as well as other discounts. If you want to see a lot of the city in a shorter amount of time, city cards may be the way to go. Make sure to view the terms and conditions of each card. In Łódź, for example, you must stay in a specific hotel to be able to buy the city card.
• Sign up for rewards clubs, especially if your stay in Poland is longer than a few days. If you plan to spend a couple of weeks exploring everything Poland has to offer, this will save you money, as there are certain places you might visit a few times. One app I recommend is the app for Żabka, the convenience store that you can find on every block in Poland. If you buy enough bottles of water, you might be able to get a free hot dog! If you plan on popping into McDonalds a few times, download the Polish McDonalds app. You can get discounted food every time you buy, and earn rewards points towards getting free items. Unfortunately, these reward points will not apply back home, and the apps are fully in Polish, but I found them not too difficult to navigate with little knowledge of Polish. Also consider signing up for rewards points for hotels and airlines, as those points can apply for future trips in other parts of the world.
• Finally, do not forget the basics I supplied earlier! Take advantage of public transportation. Use Uber instead of taxis if needed. Do not book using third party websites. Cook at the hotel, or eat away from the city center. And always ask locals for recommendations!

Budget-Friendly Destinations in Poland

As stated already, since Poland is generally cheap, all cities in Poland are budget-friendly destinations. However, there are certainly some destinations that are cheaper than others if you want to make your money stretch even farther. One warning is that the most cost-effective cities are generally ones with less flights to them, but if you are already in Poland, reaching them by train is no issue. I will supply a short summary of information about two smaller Polish cities that are budget friendly, and one major city that is budget friendly. If you want more information about Gdańsk, Kraków or Warsaw, this section is not for you!

Olsztyn is not the first city on most people’s minds when they think of going to Poland; however, it is Poland’s cheapest city. Located in the heart of Poland lake district called Masuria, home to over 2,000 lakes, there is certainly no shortage of entertaining activities to take part in, whether indoors or outdoors. The smaller population of about 170 thousand people also means that relaxation is easily found, while still being in a city.

If you are looking for beautiful architecture, Olsztyn has you covered. The old town, part of the European Route of Brick Gothic, is full of typical narrow houses, mixed in with churches and the brick town hall at center. During the summer, the center fills with people, enjoying the pleasant summer sun and enjoying the joys of Polish food and drink. There are 14 th century walls, gates, and cathedrals, the gothic castle of Warmia once home to Nicolaus Copernicus, and unlike in other Polish cities, these building are original, and survived WWII. 

Nature is certainly abundant in an around Olsztyn, with canoe trips available within the city during the summer, the beautiful lake of Jezioro Długie , and the Central Park perfect for walking, biking, and other summer activities. Venturing out of the city limits takes you into an outdoor wonderland, full of rolling hills, forests full of pine and broadleaved trees, and the largest lakes of Poland. It is a perfect place to hike, camp, swim, and enjoy all your outdoor wishes and dreams, all low cost.

Getting to Olsztyn is not as easy as major Polish cities, but is pretty straightforward. By far the easiest way is by train. It takes just over two hours to get to Olsztyn by train from Warsaw, or alternatively 2 hours and 30 minutes from Gdańsk, with tickets ranging from 8 to 12 euros one way. Olsztyn does have an airport, but it is found 56 km (35 miles) away, requiring an extra bus or expensive taxi ride. But Ryanair does fly there from London-Stansted, and Wizz Air from Dortmund or London-Luton, so there are international options if you so desire.

Lublin is a delightful city of approximately 330 thousand people not far from Warsaw. It also holds the claim of the second least expensive city in Poland. As the cultural capital of Eastern Poland, it is home to museums, historic buildings, and also proclaims to be the Polish Capital of Festivals. Due to it short distance from Warsaw, and its low price, it is a possible one-day excursion to take part in to see more of the country.

Lublin’s Old Town is its crown jewel. Built in a medieval style with narrow cobbled streets, sights such as the Lublin Castle, the Dominican Abbey, Crown Tribunal, and Cracow Gate are must see. There are also a few intriguing museums, such as the somber Majdanek State Museum, a living reminder of the atrocities committed by Nazis during WWII. Also, a short way out of the city center is the Lublin Open Air Village Museum, where you can get a feel for how Polish people lived centuries ago. 

As the Polish City of Festivals, going to Lublin when one is ongoing is worthwhile. Some of the interesting ones include the Carnaval Sztukmistrzów , Poland’s largest circus, the free Noc Kultury, a display of the diverse culture of Lublin and the surrounding area, and the Night of Museums, where like Ben Stiller, you get to visit Lublin’s museums all through the night. 

Transportation to Lublin is easy from Warsaw, as it only requires a two-hour train with ticket prices as low as 7 euros each way. The Lublin airport is only 10 km (6 miles) outside of the city, with regular train and bus service to the city center available. Ryanair flies to Lublin from Dublin and London-Luton, and Wizz Air also flies to Lublin from London-Luton.

Moving onwards to larger cities, Poznań holds the title of cheapest major city in Poland. Poland’s fifth largest city of about 500 thousand lies halfway between Berlin and Warsaw, making it easily accessible. While the beautiful main square, the heart of this bustling university town, is currently under construction (as of April 2023), there is still much worth seeing in Poznań.

First, the main square is still worth a visit , as the buildings surrounding it are stunning, and the town hall in the middle is also beautiful. All of Poznań seems to filter its way through these streets, and you will find many bars and restaurants here. However, the real pulse of the city is where the thousands of Polish university students are hanging out. A warm spring or summer day will bring many of these students to the banks of the Warta River, hosting impromptu barbeques and drinking parties. Another place to find these students is at the Nocny Targ Towarzyski (open only during spring and summer), a food cart where you can get delicious Polish food, other cuisines, and a drink. Music bumps both through the outdoor seating areas, and the concert hall next doors. It is an amazing spot to relax on a spring evening. The most important food item to try is the flavorful St Martin’s croissant, a legally protected food that can only be made in Poznań.

Poznań’s other gems are its parks. The Poznań Palm House is a pleasant place to spend on a rainy day, with a leisurely stroll through Woodrow Wilson Park to get there. Citadel Park is home to old forts staying from the days when Prussia was in charge. However, Lake Malta was my favorite place in the city when I visited. This lake has beautiful water-side bars and restaurants, a walking and cycling path, a kids’ train, a toboggan run, and hosts crew races during the summer.

As mentioned previously, getting to Poznań is easy by train from Warsaw, with the three-hour journey costing as little as 12 euros. Poznań also has an airport within city limits, with regular bus service. With Ryanair you can fly from Budapest, London-Stansted, Rome-Ciampino, and more. With Wizz Air, you can fly from Paris-Beauvais, Eindhoven, London-Luton, and more. 

Is Poland Cheap? Conclusions

So, I hope you agree with me that Poland is the perfect place to travel if you are on a budget! Amenities are cheaper than in other tourist destinations, there is lots of free things to do in every city, with these cities being served by low-budget airlines and trains from major European cities. While every city in Poland can be achieved on a budget, the cities of Olsztyn, Lublin, and Poznań are budget-travel dream destinations, with fun activities and even lower costs. 

In general, make sure to ask locals for advice, stay away from tourist centers when eating, and don’t be afraid to ask if there are discounts or rewards clubs! Take advantage of the stellar public transportation, and enjoy your surroundings. Poland has not disappointed me for the 6 months I have lived here, I am confident it will not disappoint you either.

Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

Please see my lengthy description on MSP to Atlanta survey. Tailbone is killing me from old hard seats. Seat would not recline and were not near exit row. Entertainment did not work properly and couldn’t use. No audio and touch screen failed. 3 plus hours of discomfort in narrower seats than previous flight not in comfort plus. Very dissatisfied and deserve comfort plus charges refunds, at the very least, for both my wife and I. The plane needs to be retired. Please feel free to contact me directly for further details.

MSP to Atlanta was much better than Atlanta to St. Kitts. Paid $180 each for myself and wife for Delta comfort from Atlanta to St. Kitts. Seats were more narrow and obviously old and worn out. Tailbone is killing me. Seat would not recline. Seats behind reclined and we were not an exit row or in front of an exit row. Entertainment did not work in that the movie jumped forward and back and there was no audio. The plug in the arm rest was loose. Flight attendant tried “resetting” the video for my seat but no good. She never checked back. Someone else near me had the same issue. Touch screen was unresponsive. No where near as comfortable as MSP to Atlanta flight. 3 plus hrs. flight time without the basic amenities and not even remotely close to comfortable but paid for Comfort plus. I will be very disappointed if I have the same on my return “Comfort Plus” flight St. Kitts to Atlanta. At the very least my wife and I should be refunded for round trip “Comfort Plus” charges. public website still broken for years randomly blocking browsers with privacy options active after loading a page maybe once. check-in on laptop was almost impossible but eventually randomly worked. had to print pass at airport since couldn't get back in to load digital pass on mobile firefox or chrome. red eye flight so smooth onboarding, plenty of room to spread out, easy offboarding. onboard wifi instructions mention vpn can cause problems connecting but fails to also mention private dns. no printed or built in menu list, seems weird to require personal device to point at qr code link for menu which does not even allow direct ordering. people with health condition risk related dietary restrictions trying to avoid for example cholesterol and sugar are left guessing what they can order either way without nutritional info highlights (cranberry juice was minute maid cocktail with as much suger as typical can of soda). tap to pay wasn't working and always seems sketchy to manually enter card info. good movie variety, so limited tv was okay.

It wasn't really their fault it was the horrible winds and we just got unlucky.

Great experience overall. Check in at Austin was congested as they only have about 6 check in kiosks, one was broken, and there was a lot of Spring Break travelers.

Flight was delayed 3 hours. Pilot cancelled flight under 4 people volunteered to change their seats to economy from business class.

I paid for wifi and it worked about a total of 5 min. Feel ripped off

I couldn’t make it to the airport for my original flight due to bad weather; roads were shut down, buses and trains were closed. Since the plane wasn’t cancelled, I still had to pay $720 to change my ticket.

Good friendly service and food - The seats in business class are old, too hard and not very comfortable.

Best airline to travel on a budget- really like their reasonably priced access to the SAS lounges where available.

The flight was cancelled early on and messed up the whole vacation and hard to get a refund from Kayak as they owned the ticket and of course they did not believe that SAS cancelled the ticket. Definite bad side to third party. SAS had rescheduled but overlapped the connecting flights. That did not work. Flight was cancelled long ago but Kayak still has it. Like it was taken? Bad IT ? Or all assumptions and no follow up which is the whole IT world. It needs to wake up and be more efficient. Especially as the world is going, there will be no freedom to do anything. And we will be living like the Middle Ages. Yeah, go read up on that while you still can.

Boarding the plane outside in the rain was a pain. Very safe flight

It didn't happen. SAS csncrlled and it was very difficult to convince the 3rd party they did. Not good on the 3rd party program. I don't think they trust their customers, much less being able to help them. I have had several nitemaes using 3rd party this trip and WILL NEVER use 3rd party again.

The crew were really great, but the 4 hour delay in small chunks was the worst.

Every experience was good except for the lack of comfort in those economy seats. I never had knee pain until that flight. Those seats are uncomfortable.

I bought internet for the flight. Don’t waste your money. I wasn’t able to download a 1 Mb file from Google Docs during a 3-4 hr period. You can only use WhatsApp and email if you are willing to wait.

Just a crappy airline. The same every time. You feel you are a cow on a farm. You are being being whipped and pulled.

Wasn’t very crowded. Seamless processes. No issues traveling with two little kids.

Kayak, the site I went through to book our flight, sent very unclear emails about flight changes. Kayak was incredibly unhelpful in their communications with me about this, promising to work on resolving the issue, and failing to do so. As a result, I needed to get a hotel in Brussels and am now in the process of trying to get reimbursed. On the other hand, the flight personnel in Brussels were very helpful, taking time to look into the issue and determine if they could help. I am very grateful for them and have no problems with the airline. For Kayak, however, I will never use it again and will never recommend it to anyone, and will even discourage people who consider going through that site. My worst experience ever....

My interaction with the flight attendent Eve was horrible. I was seated in 3F and was blown away watching her repeatedly skip me as she took other customer orders for lunch...she took the customer next to me but skipped me, then took everyone's order around me (in front of and behind me) . After she had taken every customer's orders to include those behind me, she came to me and said we are out of everything except one last item. I was mortified, in that, I am a 1k flyer, had pre-ordered AND as an African American could only assume why she repeatedly skipped me...mortified. no words

The Flight was good, pilot seemed very skillful. My wheel chair sister who could barely walk was allotted the second last seat in the aircraft, with great difficulty she managed to reach on her seat, as she required attendance we were given separate seat, even on request no one cared, so much so there were single passengers who were given twin seats. May not be taken as complaint but a reminder to the checkin staff to keep in mind in future the allottment of wheel chair passengers seats.

The United website was easy to use and had all the information I needed. I needed to change my flight and it was accomplished easily on line. I was also easily able to upgrade and for a reasonable price. Boarding went smoothly and the flight was in time. The service was good in board but the crew did not seem happy at all. Limited availability of meals - not much choice for purchase and in business class they ran out of one of the meal choices by row 4. .

Almost 2 hour delay in boarding with all standing ready to board at original time. No explanation given.

This flight is always a cramped bus. The gate area was inadequate and announcements were hard to hear. The flight was delayed 45 minutes to an hour by a broken aircraft door, making our total delay from Vilnius 5 hours.

Great seats assigned and comfortable, movies are good, food is delicious, great experience. No delays and they prioritize boarding children with parents which is plus.

My flight was canceled. New flight is 40 hours later and I still didn’t get the flight from Frankfurt to Zagreb.

Great service. The flight was in great condition and the staff was very cheerful.

Check in crew in Charlotte NC was superb. There were 6 of them plus what looked like a supervisor, helping to answer questions and keep things moving. Never saw so many check in crew. Then some of them showed up at the gate later for boarding. Great. The flight was mediocre. The seats were small with little leg room. The screens kept coming on when we were trying to sleep and wouldn’t shut off. I know we paid far less than first class but does that mean we should be shoved in there??

Boarding was horrible. We were packed into a bus with few seats and made to stand for 10 to 15 minutes, then driven for 5 minutes on wild curves. Complementary food and drink was a tiny chocolate and a bottle of water. Seating was cramped. Aircraft had no video.

The process overall was pretty seamless, and the crew were very friendly (especially Michael). Considering we booked expecting Lufthansa and the flight was operated by United, it was still a very good service and journey overall. The in-flight entertainment was great, with lots of quality options. One slight negative was that I had selected a vegetarian meal prior to flying, but received a vegan one. I think there should be more dietary options as it meant I missed out on some food that I would have preferred (and it seemed like the standard meals and snacks had a vegetarian option anyway). There was also a group of people who were moving around a lot and being generally disruptive at the quietest part of the flight, when the lights were off and most people were sleeping. I would have appreciated staff stepping in to encourage them to be mindful of others). Towards the end of the flight (which was very early in the morning in both time zones), the lights suddenly came on and breakfast was served. In my opinion, this was too early, and everyone was rudely awoken from sleep. After breakfast was cleared away, the lights went off again for about 45 minutes, allowing people to sleep some more. Then the lights came on again for landing. It seems like if they had served breakfast later, the lights on-lights off-lights on shenanigans could have been avoided, and people could have slept longer (and staff could have rested longer too).

Crew was rowdy and loud just hanging out in the rear of the plane instead of assisting passengers during boarding. During the flight the crew mostly hung out in the rear of the plane being obnoxious to a point of disturbance.

The flight was delayed numerous times with inconsistent updates and very ambiguous information. When it was finally cancelled the logistics of handing out vouchers and rebooking was extremely chaotic. Meal vouchers were completely inadequate for the airport restaurants, and not even accepted at some. All-in-all, it was a very disappointing experience.

Terrible. The flight from Islamabad to London took 3 hours more then previously planned, I missed my connection to Chicago, and instead had to go New York, spend an extra day before arriving at my final destination. The return leg of the journey was similar. The connection time in Qatar was shrinked to less then an hour unannounced, I had to scramble to barely make it to my flight to Islamabad. Terrible experience, never using British airways again.

They canceled my flight , they put me on a different flight that was delayed and the connection was lost . They lost my luggage. And now I’m stuck with any of my belongings.

British Airways canceled our plane and gave us a new flight scheduled to leave in only three hours, so we had to drop everything and rush to the airport. The new itinerary only left us a one hour layover in Madrid, which was too short because the plane landed late and so we missed our connecting flight. We were then booked onto a flight scheduled to take off 8 hours later, and were not given any compensation or remedial measures.

Seat layout, flight/club attendant service, food variety and quality could have been better. Business class Standard is visibly low compared with 6 other airlines that we have traveled for the past two years.

Despite many attempts to work out a change, neither British Airways nor Kayak nor Chatdeal would allow us to cancel or change this flight so we lost all of the payments when we were not able to fly. Absolutely terrible customer service. We will never use either of the services again.

It said that there was wifi. During the flight there was no wifi and while waiting at the gate the phone services already got cut off so I wasn’t able to say I am taxiing from the gate to my husband. This left me with an uncomfortable feeling. So I was waiting on the WiFi connection during flight and that never happened.

Asked for a wheelchair multiple times. Got denied the wheelchair in London layover.

20 Tips for Low Budget Travel Around Poland

It doesn’t matter if you are a backpacking expert or traveling novice. Here are some crucial tips that will help you organizing a low budget travel around Poland.

Finding cheap accomodation in Poland

Poland is just full of hotels, hostels and guesthouses. Some of them are fully available on Booking.com . Other, especially these located outside of big cities, are usually listed on local websites such as Noclegi.pl , which are mostly available only in Polish.

From our experience PLN 120-150 (25-35 euro) is a standard price for a double room (with breakfast). Nothing fancy, but you can definetely find a cheaper option, especially out of season or outside of big cities. A bed in a dorm can be booked for PLN 25-35 (6-7 euro).

Booking in advance?

If you like comfort and can’t imagine spending your holidays camping, plan your trip in advance. Especially if you would like to spend it in a cozy, beautiful guesthouse. The closer it is to the season, the smaller chances for success.

Looking for a lakeview? Better book in advance

In high season (July – August) almost every single guesthouse, hut or hotel expect you to rent a place for at least one week. It is almost impossible to book a place for ONLY a weekend. Also, some places are booked far in advance, for example these super cool tree houses W Drzewach which are probably already booked for all the weekends of 2018.

However, if you are planning to spend your time in Poland in a big city, like Cracow or Warsaw, there should be no problem with booking a shorter stay even if not planned way ahead.

What is agroturystyka?

You might have come across the term “agroturystyka” which can be translated to “rural accomodation”. IIn this case you are accomodated by the owners of the farm. You can also count on homemade dinners. It used to be one of the cheapest forms of accomodation in Poland. And there are still a lot of places where you will get a bed for 10 euros.

However today agroturystyka is getting more and more modern. Isolated forests and lakesides of Podlasie or Lubelszczyzna become more popular among rich middle class. As a result some of the places become something between a hotel and agroturytyka – located in the middle of nowhere, but with bio food and horseriding classes.

Couchsurfing is a hospitality service that allows members to stay as a guest at someone’s place. It works really well in Poland, so you can definetely give it a try. Of course, it is popular mostly in big cities.

Couchsurfing is not for everyone. Let’s be honest, not everyone is ready to  trust a total stranger enough to share a flat. However, if you never tried it but would like to start now, remember to follow a few simple rules of the community:

• Don’t treat it like a free hotel.
• Write as much as you can in your on line profile before you start to send out requests.
• Ask your friends, who are already on CS, to write a review for you – it increase your chances of finding a host.
• Personalize your requests. There is nothing worse than lazy writing.
• And last but not least, read other people profiles and reviews from the other members of the community to avoid disapointment or danger of running into wrong people.

However, if just like us you don’t mind sleeping in a tent, you are one lucky cookie. Poland is perfect for camping, even in the wild.

The highlights of camping is that you don’t have to plan or book it in advance. There is always some room left at the camping site, even if you spontaniously decide on a weekend break from the city.

Poland is pretty sweet spot for fans of camping in the nature. Sure, the rules are not as flexible as for example in Scandinavia. However, it is generaly not forbiden to camp outside of designated area.

It is however forbiden to camp in national and landscape parks. It is also not allowed to camp in the forest. In case you would like to do it, you should inform a local forestry authorithies.

But fear not. There are plenty of places around the country that are not covered with forests and just perfect for your tent.

Delicious low budget dining in Poland

Foodies with low budget will love Poland. Filling up is crazy cheap and since Polish people love to eat, there is no chance that you go home hungry.

Just remember to eat healthy. We assure you it is really easy to buy fresh and healthy meals even for less than 10 euro.

Avoid tourist menu

Touristic menu is an easy way to sell you anything that doesn’t go well with locals stomachs. Forget about it and don’t go stright into the trap. They might be cheap, but we strongly believe that quality should be just as important as the price. And we definetely don’t want you to go back home and complaint on Polish food!

Leave touristic area behind. Just around a corner you will find fewer crowds, better food and maybe even cheaper prices. Find out where locals dine, for example students.

Find out where the students eat

Students are the masters of survival. Find out where the closest campus bistro is. They are always cheap. A great example Stołówka Nawojka in Cracow.

The bright side of Poland is that you will find campuses in city centers.  So take a look around, ask online or on the street where you can get the best dinner.

Another example of a student dinery is  Gospoda Koko  , which is located almost at the Main Market in Cracow.

Bary mleczne in Poland

Bary mleczne (milk bar) are probably the cheapest option for a hungry nomad. Thanks to preferencial terms (cheap rent etc.) they can serve food sometimes three times cheaper than a proper restaurant.

Thanks to low prices and good quality of food, bary mleczne are often pretty crowded. You will find there corporation men on lunch, students, pensioners and all sorts of people who crave for homemade food.

And don’t worry. It is called a milk bar, but nowadays they serve all kind of food, like pierogi, meat chops, pancakes, Polish soups etc. The prices starts from 1 euro for a soup and ends around 3 euro for a whole meal. Bon appetit!

Folk’s Inns

You will find there on the road and in some of the biggest cities. They serve mostly traditional Polish food. And they serve it real. The portions are usually gigantic.

The perfect example of the inn is Szwejk in Warsaw, Kampania Piwna in Cracow, Karczma Bida .

Also, whenever you are on the road and in doubt where to eat, look for an inn with lots of TIRs parked around. Truck drivers know their route like nobody else and are loyal to the best dineries on their way.

Cheap traveling around Poland

No matter if you are traveling in a group or solo, always figure what is the best, most efficient way of transport.

Biggest cities and towns are usually easily accesable by train or a cheap bus. You can book a train ticket 30 days in advance the earliest. And sometimes the cheapest bus tickets costs less than 10 PLN (for example Polski Bus , Lux Express and more).

Bus tickets are usually sold in tranches. Follow bus company’s fanpage to get to know when the new pool of tickets will appear. This is the moment when they are the cheapest.

Also, it is worth to know that traveling by train in Poland is very affordable. The cheapest fares are offered by regional trains and so called TLK. If you are lucky you might also buy pretty cheap plane tickets offered by RyanAir and LOT.

Carpooling in Poland

Carpooling is widely popular in Poland. Polish platform that alows you to find passengers or drivers to share the costs of travel is called BlaBlaCar  .

It is also pretty common to find a ride by Facebook groups. Especially since BlaBlaCar sometimes charge money for signing up for the ride. However, to find the right group you will probably need a tip from a local.

Hitchhiking in Poland

Even cheaper way to commute between Polish cities is of course good, old hitchhiking. It is very easy to catch a ride and we spent a better part of our student times hitchhiking between Polish cities.

Biking saves money

In our humble opinion, discovering Poland by bike is the best option you can decide on if you if you have plenty of time but limited sources.

The wildest parts of Poland (like Suwalszczyzna, Bieszczady or Podlasie) are usually secluded places with very poor public transport. Apart from the main cities (or small towns that happen to be on the way) it is sometimes hard to get there without a car.

A perfect alternative to a car is combining train with a bike.

The bike allow you to go slowly enough to really discover all the interesting places and people on your way. You are not bound by any timetable, can always stop or take a detour. It also keep you fit.

Great post. Only one comment about the milk bars.

I wouldn’t advertise them as healthy. Nor are the always good. You can find a really bad meal in certain milk bars. Some are now showing up as corporations in the shopping malls which are terrible quality.

They are cheap and has a semi – traditional menu. Any other conclusion is a big risk!

You could also add the road side inns. Zajac? They have typical been good in my experience. Traditional food, big portions, pretty cheap.

Hi Ian, I thought about it and you might be right. I always had only good experiences with milk bars and even now I dine at own that is at my street. But I guess it is like with any other place, you have to trust your distincts and eat there if the place looks good enough. I will definetely add some information about the inns!

Is Poland Cheap? The Average Cost Of Traveling To Poland

Poland is considered a cheaper country to travel to than the popular travel destinations in Western Europe (such as France, or Germany). The lower cost of living in the country has an impact on the tourism sector, making restaurant and hotel prices competitive in comparison with those behind the western borders.

The fact that the Polish currency is weaker than Euro is also in favor of the lower cost of traveling for tourists coming from Europe, or the USA. Let’s get into details of what it really looks like, and is Poland cheap in fact?

Polish currency.

The Polish currency is called złoty, and it means Złoty (golden) . The name did not refer to a golden coin, but rather to the value of the coin weighted in gold.

You might often find PLN, instead of zloty (especially in nonpolish publications or in formal documents). This is the international name of Polish currency, just like USD, GBP, or EUR.

Of course, currency rates are not stable and today’s value might be irrelevant in a few months, however, it oscillates around these figures:

• 1 USD = 4 PLN
• 1 GBP = 5 PLN
• 1 EUR = 4,5 PLN

Is Poland Cheap -Traveling To Poland

You can arrive in Poland by plane, train, bus, ship, car, bike, or even on foot. Depending on where you are coming from. And as the way of transport varies, the same goes for prices behind it.

As for flight to Poland tickets, there are some excellent deals for traveling within Europe. Sometimes the ticket price is less than 5 Euro. However, on average, you can get tickets for about 30-50 EUR. Overseas destinations will cost around 250 Euros and up.

Cross-border buses and trains will have similar prices, and again depending on the distance, will cost from 10 to 80 Euro.

A ferry from the UK, Denmark, and Scandinavia countries, to come through the Baltic Sea, costs on average of 50-250 euros.

Is Poland Cheap – Accommodation

5* hotels and top resort.

Hotels with names known internationally are cheaper in Poland in comparison to other European countries. Hilton, Sheraton, Radisson, and Marriott, all in top locations, are cheaper than the same brands in Lisbon, Majorca, Malta, Monaco, Dubrovnik, or Mykonos.

Price in Poland on average 200 -230 EUR Price in Europe on average 400-450 EUR.

Economy Class Hotels

The price depends greatly on the demand, attractions in the region, and the season as the same standard accommodation will vary in price. 3-4* hotels in Poland 40-70 EUR 3-4* hotels in Europe 80-150 EUR

Apartments are always a good bargain. They offer a very good standard, can accommodate bigger groups, and families, and the price reflects the quality.

On The Budget Nights

Hostels, dorms, or campsites are the cheapest accommodation. Worth to mention, that you can set your tent outside of camping sites.

As long the owner of the land is ok with it, and you are outside the city and National Parks, no one would ask you to leave. However. Even though Poland is a safe country , I would recommend sticking to dedicated places, always better to be safe than sorry (the rule is the same all over the world).

• Hostel price in Europe is 20-40 EUR

Is Poland Cheap – Getting Around

It is fair to say, that there is still a lot to be done when it comes to Polish roads, to reach Western Europe standards. But saying that, I give a very big credit to public transport . Poland is well-communicated, and tickets can be bought online.

Public Transport

• Trains – On average Poland is 3rd cheapest country in Europe after Latvia, Hungary, and Slovakia.
• Flixbus – this is an affordable chain of buses connecting bigger cities in Poland and neighboring countries. The buses are of a high standard with very good online service.
• City Transport – On average daily pass in Polish cities is 2 – 3 EUR.
• TAXI / Uber – just over 1 EUR/km in cities
• Paid Highways -short sections are paid with a toll, but no vignette is required to drive in Poland.
• Petrol – prices are among the lowest in Europe, at about 1,35 EUR
• Electric Scooter – 05 EUR/ km

Is Poland Cheap – Groceries

It is noticeable that prices in bigger cities or in tourist destinations are a bit higher than in more rural areas. But the prices are still very affordable.

• Local Beer from a Shop:  1-2 EUR
• Water 1,5L – 0,70 EUR
• Loaf of Fresh Bread:  1-1,5 EUR

You say that Poland is a “safe country”, but it’s notorious for criminal gangs drugging and robbing foreign visitors, particularly in Krakow. The problem is so bad that the US Embassy had to put out a warning. So, I’m wondering how it can be a “safe country” for travellers.

The report you mentioned is from 4 years ago. Lots have changed during that time. Plus, scams are happening all over the world, it’s not just typical to Poland.
