Pen Review: Lamy Safari Neon Lime (2015 Special Edition)

When I saw the new Lamy Safari in Neon Lime (the 2015 Special Edition Color) (19.50 €) I knew immediately that I’d have to have one. The color is just too perfect not to own it. The color is such a bright yellow green its practically highlighter yellow.

The Lamy is one of the longest pens in my collection but because its made of plastic, its very lightweight. I think it would be a comfortable pen for most writers, tiny to extra large hands. It can be used posted but it makes the pen extremely long. If that’s comfortable go for it but I prefer to use it unposted.

I attempted to use the Neon Lime ink but quickly discovered that it is more useful as a highlighter ink than a writing ink.

I got the Neon Lime Safari with a Medium nib which is one of the only nib sizes from Lamy I had not tried yet. I had a little bit of an issue with a rough spot on the nib so I ran it across some micro mesh to smooth it out and then it seemed good to go. I tried to keep my fingers on the grip section as the grooves indicated but, as a lefty, it ends up being a little awkward to get the proper angle and goo ink flow upside down that way. Once I cocked the pen slightly, I was able to get more consistent ink flow with the medium nib. If I write with my hand below the line I’m writing (mirroring most right handed writers) I got much darker ink and flow.

I stand by my recommendation that lefties don’t start their fountain pen adventures with a Lamy Safari since the grip section can make it more challenging to find the best nib angle for our often-unique writing angles. A pen with a smooth grip section will work better as an introductory pen for a left-handed writer like a Pilot Metropolitan or the higher-priced Lamy Studio .

The great thing about the Lamy line is how easy it is to swap out the nibs. I pulled the 1.1mm nib out of my Lamy Studio and tried it in the Neon Lime. Surprisingly, I had an easier time getting the ink on the paper with the wider nib and I found the line variation more interesting.

Overall, the Lamy is a great introductory fountain pen with easy-to-swap nibs and the Neon Lime color is bright, fun color. My only caveat to recommending the Lamy Safari is, for a left-handed writer, the molded grip section can introduce some challenges if you are an overwriter (you hook your hand above the line you are writing). That said, the Lamy Safari line is quite reasonably priced so if you haven’t tried one yet, its certainly won’t break the bank. Its a classic design in a bold new color.

Nice review. You are right about it being a color one must have. I like the bright colors. I don’t find the grip to be that compromising for lefties. However, some people or many people do not hold a pen in the most traditional way. Then, I can understand your point. I bought my safari in Europe and it is one of the two smoothest writing Safaris I own. I’m using MB permanent grey. It’s a fabulous writer.

Affordable.
Many colors to choose from.
Interchangeable nibs.
Ink window.
Can be taken apart to clean.
Great for beginners and experienced users.
A reliable, dependable writer.
This particular nib is expressive and fun to write with.
Comfortable in hand, if the grip works for you. Nice weight and balance.
Converter is a separate purchase (~$5).
Grip is a turn off for some people.
It's a BRIGHT color!

I'm with you on the purple - come on Lamy, you know you want to!! I also agree that the Safari's are better to write with in the hand than the Alstars (the only reason I didn't get a AlStar copper). Thankyou for the review.

I do like the bright colours if i'm honest. It makes the pen stand out. I have the yellow one and it's become the best pen i've used for a long time. Don't think i'll be moving away from the Lamy Safari for a while.

Great post and those Lamy Safari pens have great colors. Maybe next year for the hot purple.

I love these! I love the lamy fountain pen has a great look to it, especially the neon. I have mine also in the neon lime colour & I've found that it's a great conversation starter.

About Lamy Safari Fountain Pen - Neon Lime (2015 Special Edition)

The Lamy Safari was first introduced in 1980 and was targeted at the new independent young people that wished to make a statement through their own writing tool. Produced from colourful, extremely resistant ABS plastic, the Safari has become renown for its robustness and reliability. Safari's ergonomically designed front section ensures comfortable writing even for prolonged periods. The avant-garde design of the Safari has given it universal acceptance by writers of all age groups.

The Safari fountain pen uses Lamy ink cartridges or can be used with bottled ink with the Lamy Z28 converter. The nib is made from polished stainless steel and is available in either Fine or Medium sizes. Supplied with a pack of 5 Lamy Neon Lime ink cartridges.

UK Delivery

We dispatch all orders over the value of £30 with Royal Mail Tracked 48 free postage. Orders with a value of up to £30 are charged £3.00. There is an option to upgrade your postage to Tracked 24 or Special Delivery for the following supplemental costs:

Most orders received before 12 noon Mon-Fri will be shipped the same day and will generally arrive within three working days after posting. Please note this is based on stock availability and the ability of Royal Mail to meet their own delivery guidelines. We will endeavour to contact you if our stocks are depleted at the time of your order. Orders placed after 12 noon on Friday will be dispatched the following Monday and are subject to stock availability.

Special Delivery

Orders over the value of £150 are sent by Royal Mail Special Delivery 1pm at no extra cost, but please note that the actual dispatch date will be subject to stock availability and day/time of order. Orders must be placed before 12 noon. Please feel free to speak to our sales team to check stock availability and despatch times before you place your order.

Saturday Delivery

We cannot guarantee items that are sent by Royal Mail Special Delivery 1pm will arrive the next day before 1pm on Saturdays as this is affected by your local sorting office.

However you must place your order before 12 noon on the Friday if you require this service. Please feel free to call us for stock availability before placing your order.

Failed Deliveries

Orders sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery will require a signature. If there is nobody to receive the goods, the carrier will leave a card. It is your responsibility to contact the carrier to rearrange delivery or to collect them from your local sorting office.

International Delivery

Shipping costs to international locations vary according to the size and weight of your parcel. The shipping cost will be displayed in your basket before you checkout and you will have the option to cancel your order before payment should you decide the shipping cost makes your purchase beyond budget. Please note that we reserve the right to adjust delivery charges for foreign orders over 1kg in weight. We will always contact you if this is the case and give you the option to pay extra or cancel the order.

LAMY safari Fountain Pen - A Special Edition History

Every year, LAMY produces a special edition of the popular LAMY safari fountain pen, sometimes even in multiple colors. Here we've compiled a visual look back at all of the annual special edition LAMY safari fountain pens that have been available in the United States, for at least as long as Goulet Pens has been around.

The Colors:

2024: blackberry violet, pink cliff.

One of two special edition colors for 2024 in the kewi collection! blackberry violet features a glossy dark purple barrel and cap, with a light purple finial and grip section. pink cliff features a matte blue-grey barrel and cap, with a pink finial and grip section. Both pens have a black trim and a black clip. Matching inks were also released, in blackberry and cliff .

2023: aquasky, lightrose, and springgreen

Another set of three pastel colors for 2023! The aquasky light blue, the lightrose pink, and the springgreen fountain pens each have a glossy pastel resin barrel and cap, with color-matched trim. Each comes equipped with a silver steel nib.

These three pastel colors are similar to the 2019 special editions, but a bit more vibrant in color.

2022: strawberry, and cream

The LAMY safari fountain pen in strawberry features a matte red body with a matching red clip and a silver steel nib.

The cream version features a matte ivory body with a matching ivory clip and a silver steel nib.

2021 : terra, and savannah

These two colors serve as an homage to the original LAMY safari fountain pen colors from the 1980's.

terra features a matte orange-red body, complemented by a black clip and a black steel nib.

savannah features a matte olive green body, with a black clip and a black steel nib.

2020 : aquamarine, mango, and violet

These three vibrant special edition colors were dubbed the "candy" collection.

The mango featured a yellow-orange body, clip, and finial, and a silver steel nib. A matching yellow-orange ink was also made available separately in bottles and ink cartridges.

The aquamarine version featured an aqua turquoise body, clip, and finial, and a silver steel nib.

Finally, the LAMY safari fountain pen in violet featured an all-purple body, clip, and finial, and a silver steel nib.

2019 : Blue Macaron, Mint Glaze, and Powder Rose

In 2019, three colors were introduced together as a special edition collection for the first time. These three LAMY safari fountain pen special edition colors were known together as the Pastel collection.

Blue Macaron featured a glossy pastel blue barrel and cap, with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

Mint Glaze came with a glossy pastel green barrel and cap, with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

Finally, the Powder Rose featured a glossy pastel pink barrel and cap, with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

2018 : All Black

A totally stealthed-out special edition! This LAMY safari fountain pen in all black featured a matte black barrel and cap, a black clip, and a black steel nib.

2017 : Petrol

Another very popular special edition! This matte teal LAMY safari fountain pen in petrol came with a black clip and a black steel nib. A matching petrol teal ink was also made available separately in bottles and ink cartridges.

2016 : Dark Lilac

Definitely the most popular LAMY safari special edition ever, to this day. The LAMY safari fountain pen in dark lilac was the first purple safari. It was also the first of the popular matte versions in the special edition series. This fountain pen came with a black clip and a black steel nib, and an incredibly popular bottled ink and ink cartridges that sold out far too quickly. It now has a cult-like following!

2015 : NeonLime

The final installment in a trend of bright yellow-greens was the neonlime. This LAMY safari special edition fountain pen featured a bright glossy neon yellow-green barrel and cap, silver clip, and a silver steel nib. In addition, it was accompanied by a matching neonlime bottled ink and ink cartridges.

2014 : Neon Coral

Continuing the neon trend was the bright glossy pink/orange neon coral. This special edition fountain pen came with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

2013 : Neon Yellow

The first in a series of bright, neon colors was Neon Yellow . It came with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

2012 : Apple Green

This glossy apple green LAMY safari fountain pen came with a silver clip, and a silver steel nib.

Originally released as a special edition, it was later re-released as a regular edition under the name " green ".

2011 : Aquamarine

A glossy bright turquoise color, this LAMY safari special edition in aquamarine came with a silver clip and a silver steel nib.

Later re-released as a regular edition, the aquamarine color was discontinued once again.

The LAMY safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. When the LAMY safari is unveiled at the Frankfurt Fair in 1980, nobody guesses that it would one day be the best-selling fountain pen in the world.

The LAMY safari was the outcome of extensive research work in the field of youth psychology and of close cooperation with designer Wolfgang Fabian and the Mannheim Development Group under the direction of Prof. Bernt Spiegel. The ergonomic design and sturdy workmanship of the LAMY safari are perfectly tailored to the needs of the young, but also quickly win over many adult fans as well.

Originally launched in colors reminiscent of an African safari -- savannah green, terracotta orange and charcoal black (which are featured in the special edition colors of the LAMY Studio in 2019), it underwent constant innovation and redesigns, culminating in the model we see today.

The LAMY Safari won the iF Design award in 1994 and the rest as they say is history.

Lamy Safari

The Safari is a noted design by Wolfgang Fabian [1] [2] and Bernt Spiegel of the Entwicklungsgruppe Mannheim [3] which remains in production from 1980. The Safari and the derived AL-star and Vista lines are intended for students/young writers and feature a non round grip section optimized to be held with a 'tripod pen grip'. The Safari receives a new limited edition color every year, usually with a matching bottle of ink.

Different Generations of the Lamy Safari [ edit ]

First generation [ edit ].

Launched in 1980 these were available in textured finish with 3 color options - Terracotta orange, Savannah green and Charcoal black. The easiest way to identify the pen is by the lack of imprint in the bottom of the barrel. Another minor detail that is different from future generations is the cap nut is hexagonal. You can see the flats on it if you shine a light into the cap. The pen was designed for cartridges or the old-style metal squeeze bar converter so there are only two wide slots at the threaded end of the section. The old-style converters were probably included with the pen in some markets and sold separately in others. [4]

Second generation [ edit ]

These appeared sometime in the mid 80's. The "W. Germany" imprint was added to the bottom of the barrel. The inner cap was redesigned (the early material deteriorated quite easily) and the cap nut was changed to a round shape. Other colors were added, including white, red, yellow and blue. Most of these colors were only offered with a smooth texture. The charcoal was still textured and the white was made in both textured and smooth. I have heard rumors of a smooth charcoal but never actually seen one. The Terracotta and Savannah were discontinued. [4]

Third generation [ edit ]

These came around 1990 or 1991. There were two changes on this pen: the barrel imprint was changed to "Germany," thanks to reunification, and extra slots were added to the section to accept the snaps on the plastic piston converter. Colors were basically the same as the previous generation but the textured white disappeared and the first demonstrator was added. The demonstrator might be considered the first "LE" Safari. Around the mid-90's they were sold in some markets but I don't know if they ever appeared as a regular catalog item. [4]

Fourth generation [ edit ]

This change came in the mid to late 90's and was a big one. The clip, nib and feed remained the same but all other parts were redesigned. The Lamy logo and nib size were added to the nib via laser-etching. The barrel was changed from one part to two. The cap and cap ring were combined into one part. The cap asembly was redesigned to snap together, eliminating the machined top screw and cap nut. I believe this redesign was done as a cost-saving measure. The price of these pens has changed very little in nearly 30 years and this redesign allowed Lamy to lower the manufacturing cost. Total number of parts went from 14 down to 11 and they eliminated two costly machined parts. All done without really altering the appearance or quality of the pen - not bad. The original white pen disappeared, a textured grey was introduced and followed by many LE colors. The demonstrator exists in this generation too but it went away when the Vista was introduced. [4] This generation of pen is designed to work alongside the Z28 converter. [5]

What a terrible ink. I couldn't agree with you more about this one. What a disappointment.

The splash and the towel drop look nice. But I still can't read what is written...

I bought a box of this ink yesterday. I won't torture my pen pals writing with it.

My neonlime Safari and neonlime ink arrived today.

I really like the snappy color of the pen, but there's a problem with the ink. More correctly, the problem is with my aging eye's. I can see the ink on the paper, but can't read what I have written. Age has it's rewards, but has pitfalls as well. So far I have tried adding a bit of Lamy green ink to the neonlime (to the converter via syringe), and plan to add a bit more a little later. I'm hoping that as it gets darker, I'll more easily be able to see it.

The same happens to me. I see the bright colour, but I can't read the words. And I don't think it's because of my age.

This is what most people consider a "Highlighter" ink.... not meant for writing, but only for highlighting text.

When swabbed is totally fluorescent... just like a highlighter.

I gave in to my inner kid wanting the Lamy Neon Green pen and ink, too, and I love the ink! True, it's not a letter-writing ink, because it's hard to read. But it's a fine highlighter. I also got a broad nib for the Lamy, to better show the ink. I use it for adding pizzazz to a page, and for highlighting. I love the Lamy bottles, too. Nice to use.

Question Reality

For the sake of completeness, I bought a pack of Neon Lime cartridges, but I don't know when I will ever use them.

Luminous can be used for actual writing, but it's a pain to clean.

I bought these with high hopes before seeing any reviews, I have ended up mixing them at a 1:1 ratio with the lamy blue cartridges we get with the pens, it gives an acceptable green.

Neon Coral and Copper Orange were such nice colours, they had to mess up somewhere.

3 weeks later...

I've just found out it's fluorescent!

COOL!!!!..... I have Noodlers' Golden Pig (totally fluorescent).. and this ink looked similar.. So, I did guess it was fluorescent. (post #11 above)

Now I'm tempted to try Neon Coral...

National origin:- Soviet Union Role:- Fighter Interceptor Manufacturer:- Mikoyan-Gurevich Designer:- First flight:- 29th October 1940 Introduction:- 1941 Status:- Retired 1945 Produced:- 1940-1941 Number built:- 3,422 Primary users:- Soviet Air Forces (VVS); Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO); Soviet Naval Aviation Developed from:- Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-1 Variants:- Mikoyan-Gurevich I-211 Operational history MiG-3s were delivered to frontline fighter regiments beginning in the spring of 1941 and were a handful for pilots accustomed to the lower-performance and docile Polikarpov I-152 and I-153 biplanes and the Polikarpov I-16 monoplane. It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1. Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots. In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited. Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: "The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank." On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational. An additional 64 MiGs were assigned to Naval Aviation, 38 in the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet and 26 in the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet. The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost. The most unusual case was the pair of MiG-3s dispatched from the 55th on a reconnaissance mission to PloieÅŸti that failed to properly calculate their fuel consumption and both were forced to land when they ran out of fuel. Most of the MiG-3s assigned to the interior military districts were transferred to the PVO where their lack of performance at low altitudes was not so important. On 10 July 299 were assigned to the PVO, the bulk of them belonging to the 6th PVO Corps at Moscow, while only 293 remained with the VVS, and 60 with the Naval Air Forces, a total of only 652 despite deliveries of several hundred aircraft. By 1 October, on the eve of the German offensive towards Moscow codenamed Operation Typhoon, only 257 were assigned to VVS units, 209 to the PVO, and 46 to the Navy, a total of only 512, a decrease of 140 fighters since 10 July, despite deliveries of over a thousand aircraft in the intervening period. By 5 December, the start of the Soviet counter-offensive that drove the Germans back from the gates of Moscow, the Navy had 33 MiGs on hand, the VVS 210, and the PVO 309. This was a total of 552, an increase of only 40 aircraft from 1 October. Over the winter of 1941-42 the Soviets transferred all of the remaining MiG-3s to the Navy and PVO so that on 1 May 1942 none were left on strength with the VVS. By 1 May 1942, Naval Aviation had 37 MiGs on strength, while the PVO had 323 on hand on 10 May. By 1 June 1944, the Navy had transferred all its aircraft to the PVO, which reported only 17 on its own strength, and all of those were gone by 1 January 1945. Undoubtedly more remained in training units and the like, but none were assigned to combat units by then.
