The Ultimate Guide to Lüderitz Namibia

tourist attractions in luderitz namibia

Lüderitz was hands down the biggest surprise of our self-drive Namibia road trip. We loved it. From our morning spent exploring the abandoned mines at Elizabeth Bay to our afternoon roaming the rocky outcrops of the Lüderitz peninsula, we were shocked at how much this small town has to offer.

If you’re spending two weeks in Namibia, we think Lüderitz is an essential stop on your tour. This guide will cover the highlights of the area and give you ideas on how to spend one to two days. While that should be enough to see the highlights, we also offer advice on how to extend your trip.

What’s Included:

Where is lüderitz, why lüderitz deserves a spot on your namibia itinerary, what to see and do in lüderitz, what to see and do on lüderitz peninsula, what to see and do around lüderitz, where to eat in lüderitz.

Lüderitz is a small town on the southern coast of Namibia with a long history first as a colonial trading post, then concentration camp, and then diamond prospecting town. Despite its large role in the early history of Namibia, the town experienced a decline in the 1920s and has remained small ever since.

Lüderitz is not as highly touristed as most other locations in Namibia because of its remote location. It’s approximately 8 hours drive directly from Windhoek via the B1 and B4 highways, or 6 hours drive south from Sesriem along the C27 or C14.

It is sandwiched between the Sperrgebiet (or “forbidden zone”) to the south and the Namib-Naukluft National Park to the north. Both the Sperrgebiet and Namib-Naukluft National Park have limited access and few roads, making the B4 highway the only way into the town. It may seem a long drive to get to Lüderitz, but the ample array of adventure activities available on the city’s doorstep make it worth the trouble.

Wide view of Lüderitz Namibia from the Lüderitz peninsula

Lüderitz has a remarkable array of activities and impressive sites. The town has a small museum on Lüderitz’s history, the notable Felsenkirche (“rock church”), and a number of brilliantly preserved colonial buildings.

Just outside of town is the Lüderitz peninsula, which offers miles of remote, rocky beaches, perfect for testing your off road driving skills. There’s also Kolmanskop, the famous abandoned diamond mining town where the sand dunes have swallowed up the buildings. .

If you have time and want to go further, you can take half-day, full-day, and multi-day trips out of Lüderitz to amazing destinations including Elizabeth Bay, Bogenfels, and Saddle Hill. If you’re an adventure lover, your Namibia itinerary needs to include Lüderitz.

The historic center of Lüderitz is easily walkable and the Bradt Namibia travel guide provides an excellent 45-minute self-guided walking tour. Along the route are several points of interest worth visiting, but many have limited opening hours.

  • Lüderitz Museum – This museum provides insight into Lüderitz’s history as well as Namibian history in general. Despite its small size, you’ll find plenty of artifacts and photos. Expect to spend about one hour here.
  • Felsenkirche – Felsenkirche means “rock church” in German. This stunning building is located at the top of a hill on Lüderitz’s southern side. Despite the church’s plain exterior, it’s brilliantly situated for photos. Just to the right of the church, you’ll find great views over Lüderitz Bay. This is an excellent place to watch the sunset. The church has remarkable stained glass windows and, if you want to see them for yourself, you can visit between 5:00pm and 6:00pm every day but Sunday.
  • Goerke Haus – Built in 1910, this house typifies the German-influenced architecture from Lüderitz’s colonial period. The interior is interesting in both its architecture and decoration, but lacks original furnishings.
  • Penguin Catamaran Tours – Glimpse the African Penguins that call Lüderitz’s Halifax Island home on a catamaran tour, which depart daily at 8:00am. The area is home to over 800 mating pairs of these diminutive penguins. If that’s not enough, a tour also gives you the chance to spot whales, Heaviside’s Dolphin, and Cape Fur Seals.
  • Lüderitz Hollywood Sign – While it will never rival Los Angeles’ Hollywood sign in fame, Lüderitz copies the iconic letters with this sign spelling out the town’s name. Perched in a rocky outcrop near the entrance to the city, it is possible to hike up to the letters, though the views don’t necessarily merit the effort.

Large old warehouse-like building in Lüderitz Namibia

Lüderitz’s most impressive asset is the nearby Tsau Khaeb National Park, more commonly known as the Lüderitz Peninsula. This natural park hosts a variety of wildlife, salt pans, coves and fjords, as well as a large number of off-road tracks. We highly recommend you reserve at least a half day to self-drive this peninsula and explore the highlights. Guided tours of the peninsula are also available from local tour operators, but the sights are easily accessible on your own.

In the map below we have noted our favorite spots with red hearts and other points of interest with blue stars. Click on each icon for a short description of the location. The blue lines on the map are well-maintained public (D-type) gravel roads and the purple lines are 4×4 off-road tracks (although some routes are passable in 2×4 as noted in the map comments). Even if you are new to off-road driving , we think it’s worth the effort to try these tracks as they’re relatively easy and quite well marked. While you drive, look for small concrete block markers at the intersections of both the public and 4×4 roads, which indicate nearby attractions.

Although most routes are well marked, we do recommend that you bring an offline map app like Maps.me to help navigate. Both the Nest Hotel and local tour operators offer a colorful map that covers the town and peninsula.  Alongside local highlights, it has information on the area’s wildlife such as Damara Turns, African Penguins, Greater Flamingos, Cape Fur Seals, and more.

tourist attractions in luderitz namibia

Lüderitz is located at the southernmost tip of the Namib Desert. If you want to explore the desert, you can join a tour that will guide you through the vast dune sea. Here you’ll find some of the world’s most spectacular dunes, and even get the chance to climb a few.

Lüderitz is also located at the very northern end of the Sperrgebiet diamond mining zone, which was off-limits to the public for decades. While it’s now a national park, you’ll still need a permit to explore the area, which is home to several abandoned diamond mining towns.

Tours to the north and south can take anywhere from half a day up to several days depending on how far you want to roam. All tours into these areas require permits arranged in advance by a tour operator.

We think the best tour operator in Lüderitz is Namib Offroad Excursions . The owner, Heinz, leads tours to both the Namib Desert dunes and the diamond mining towns. The company’s website may be barebones, but the tours are anything but. Whether traveling with Heinz or another tour operator, we recommend saving time during your stopover in Lüderitz to visit one or more of the following destinations:

Wide image of many abandoned and decaying buildings in Elizabeth Bay Namibia

  • Kolmanskop – Want to see a diamond mining town but didn’t arrange in advance? Kolmanskop is for you. It’s accessible directly from the B4 about 10km outside of Lüderitz. Kolmanskop offers free tours with purchase of an entry ticket which includes a 45 minute walking tour and free time to take photos. If you’re serious about getting the best photos possible, plan to visit around sunrise. To do so, you’ll need to get a photo permit, which allows any-time access (access is otherwise restricted to tour times).  Kolmanskop is one of Namibia’s biggest tourist attractions thanks to the haunting sand dunes that have swept into the buildings, nearly engulfing them in some places. That being said, if you’re serious about getting off the tourist track, look to travel further into the Sperrgebiet with a tour operator
  • Elizabeth Bay – This abandoned diamond mining town, operated between the 1920s and 1940s, sits just 5km away from a modern diamond mining facility of the same name. If you have limited time in Lüderitz, Elizabeth Bay is a perfect half-day tour. Your tour will include a brief drive through the old town with major highlights pointed out and explained. This is followed by free time to take photos of any part of the town that interests you. This town is substantially larger than Kolmanskop, right against the coast, and offers the possibility of seeing rare brown hyenas, which roam the area. Accessing Elizabeth Bay requires that you go on a permitted tour.
  • Bogenfels Town and Rock Arch – Yet another abandoned diamond mining town, Bogenfels is much smaller than Kolmanskop or Elizabeth Bay. It is also much further out and requires a full day permitted tour. However, in addition to the town, Bongenfels is the location of a massive rock arch that stretches from the land out into the ocean. Highlights along the way include incredible vistas of some of the most untouched desert lands in the world and opportunities to see wildlife including seals and hyenas.
  • Agate Beach – Just 7km north of Lüderitz, Agate Beach is accessible to the public without a permit. This beach was created from the tailings of a former diamond mining operation and has become is a popular spot to swim in the Atlantic or to search for agate and crystals. If you only have a short time to spend in Lüderitz, this is one of the quickest excursions. Similar agate beaches also dot the Lüderitz Peninsula.
  • Vast Dune Sea – For off-road adventurers, a dune-driving tour into the Namib Desert is a must. Saddle Hill, a steep dune that abuts the coast, is a common destination point, but tours can typically be sized to the length and duration you prefer. We were advised by our tour guide that three days is a minimum to fully appreciate the atmosphere. Drive over sand dunes along the desolate coastline where sand meets water. You’ll see some of the tallest dunes in the world and glimpse endless stretches of desert rivaled only by the Sahara and Gobi. And to top it off, nighttimes are spent camping in one of the best stargazing spots in the world.

Despite the remote and rugged coastline around Lüderitz, the surroundings are not a major area for shipwreck sightseeing. The concentration of the most impressive shipwrecks is around Walvis Bay, to the North, and not easily accessible from Lüderitz. Those shipwrecks around Lüderitz have mostly deteriorated or are completely submerged.

  • The Portuguese Fisherman – This fish-centric restaurant with water views prepares excellent dishes with fresh caught local fish. To drink, there’s local Namibian beer and a wide variety of affordable wines. There’s also a small sushi bar, if you’re interested in getting a local taste of Japanese cuisine. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and the owner makes rounds of the tables to check on the diners.
  • Barrels – Barrels, the local sports bar, is frequently packed with residents and tourists alike. The relaxed setting lends itself to slowly enjoying an ice cold Namibian beer after a long day of sightseeing. The bar food menu is simple and filling. Don’t skip the fresh-baked malva pudding for dessert!
  • Essenzeit – This elegant restaurant overlooks the harbor and offers a menu to suit all tastes, including vegetarian and vegan diets. Notably this restaurant also serves breakfast, as an alternative to the offering you may have at your accommodation. The staff are friendly, but the experience can feel a little less personal than other dining options in Lüderitz.

Where time almost stands still

In many ways, Luderitz seems frozen in time. Originally built on such high hopes, the town has preserved much of its alluring German architecture, almost like a memory to a time passed. Today one cannot help but feel the peculiarity, as well as the charm, of this remote little coastal town.

Luderitz: A quiet town with many stories to tell

With its unique setting, interesting history and friendly people, Luderitz (Lüderitz) is a coastal holiday town with a difference. Not only does the town’s architecture have a story to tell, but the nearby ghost towns of Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay, as well as the wild horses at Garub, all contribute to the mystery and bizarreness connected to Luderitz.

Bartolomeu Dias erected a stone cross on this rocky coast as early as 1488 whilst on his famous quest to find a sea route to India. Today, a replica of the cross marks the location where it was originally placed and can be visited. The Portuguese, however, were not interested in this inhospitable land. Eventually, in 1883 the German merchant Adolf Luderitz landed in the bay that was later to be named after him. He bought the surrounding land from the Khoekhoe chief Joseph Fredericks in an event, which many believe is the beginning of German colonial rule in South West Africa.

At first, progress was very slow. But then the town of Luderitz suddenly experienced an unexpected surge in wealth and population when, completely by chance, diamonds were discovered in 1908. The area soon found itself amid a tremendous diamond rush. Many people became very wealthy, very quickly and naturally, they needed a way to show their wealth. As a result, new and ornate buildings started springing up, many in the German art nouveau style which was in vogue at the time. Most notable of these buildings is perhaps the Goerke House, built for Hans Goerke who was the manager of the local diamond company. This magnificent house has been well maintained and can be visited on guided tours during certain hours. Another one of the town’s most famous buildings is the Lutheran Church known as Rock Church (Felsenkirche), sitting atop of Diamond Hill, overlooking the town. Built in a mostly neo-gothic style it is both impressive and beautiful and yet, as is often case in Luderitz, feels slightly out of place. A guided city tour of Luderitz is certainly worth it. It allows you to not only admire, but also understand the history behind some of the town’s most notable structures.

With the afore mentioned diamond boom also came new settlements such as Elizabeth Bay and most notably, Kolmanskop. The settlement at Kolmanskop grew particularly fast and took the shape of a small German town. The only difference was that this town was not somewhere in the Bavarian Alps, but in the middle of the Namib Desert. Soon, ostentatious villas sprung up with the newfound wealth. The town had its own school, skittle alley, gymnasium, butchery, ice factory and a hospital with the first x-ray machine in the southern hemisphere.

The diamond rush did not last long however, and the diamond industry soon moved further south, leaving the beautiful buildings of Luderitz as relics to its once prosperous past and ultimately, transforming Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay into ghost towns. The sands of the Namib have been gradually reclaiming the settlements and now, particularly Kolmanskop has become probably the area’s foremost tourist attraction.

But Luderitz has even more bizarreness to offer and the wild horses of the Namib are another one of the region’s strange attractions. Their exact origin remains a mystery, but many suggest that the horses are the descendants of domesticated horses which were freed during the First World War. You could see these now feral horses for yourself, as they are often sighted near a place called Garub, near Aus, approximately on hours’ drive from Luderitz.

A less well-known and considerably darker chapter of Luderitz’s history is found on Shark Island, a jagged peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic just outside of the town itself. Now used as a campsite, this island was once a concentration camp where thousands of ethnic Hereros and Namas were incarcerated and where many died due to exposure, following a bloody colonial war.

Today, Luderitz is striving to rekindle the optimism which once enveloped the town. Luckily, there are several wonderful accommodation options to choose from when staying here. Ranging from small owner-run guest houses to larger hotels, there is something for everyone. Many of the accommodations provide a sea view and allow you to gaze out onto the Luderitz harbour or over the Atlantic Ocean.

You can explore Luderitz as part of this self-drive tour , this guided tour , or any tailor-made tour .

Luderitz is often forgotten by those who travel to Namibia and that is a real pity. The town is in a very remote region and on face value, seems like just another a sleepy seaside town. But it is more than that. It is a sleepy seaside town with plenty of stories to tell and it offers many things to do and discover for any traveller who visits.

German Architecture

You can see examples of German art nouveau architecture on buildings such as the Felsenkirche, Goerke House, the Old Station Building, the Turnhalle, Kreplin House and Troost House, giving the town a peculiar German feel. On a guided tour, you can learn about the colonial history of Namibia.

Luderitz Waterfront

You can take a stroll along the newly created Luderitz Waterfront and spend some time exploring the restaurants and shops and mingle with some of the friendly locals whilst doing so.

Luderitz Crayfish Festival

You can discover why the people of Luderitz are so proud of their local crayfish (rock lobster), particularly during the annual Luderitz Crayfish Festival which runs from the end of April until early May and taste many delicious crayfish dishes.

Best time to visit Luderitz

Luderitz has a desert climate, and the weather is constant throughout the year. You can expect foggy mornings and nights with cool to mild daytime temperatures and a chilly breeze (or sometimes strong wind) regularly coming in off the cold Atlantic Ocean. Do not expect any rainy days however, as Luderitz hardly ever experiences rainfall.

Visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop

The ghost towns of Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay in the Luderitz environs showcase the weathered remains of the diamond rush that boomed here in the early 1900s. Kolmanskop is particularly worth a visit – this once thriving town is now gradually being reclaimed by the desert sand and makes for a fascinating trip back into time and for eery photo motifs.

5 Unmissable Things To Do In Luderitz, Namibia

By claudia - January 15, 2019

A Bavarian-style city may not be what you expect to find in the southern part of Africa, but Luderitz, Namibia has plenty of surprises. Claudia shares five of the best things to do in this unique African destination.

All travellers would agree visiting Luderitz is one of the top things to do in Namibia . Located in the south of the country on one of the most inhospitable coasts of southern Africa, this small town of around 18000 people which was founded in 1883 and named after the person who had purchased the land where it was built, catches visitors by surprise with its colonial architecture and its Art Nouveau buildings.

In other words, it feels completely out of place, and just plain weird. Because frankly, you would hardly imagine finding a town that would sit comfortably in the background of South Bavarian mountains in the desert of Namibia. There’s little doubt as to why it’s called Little Munich, indeed.

Weird, quirky yet incredibly interesting, terribly cold, and strangely humid despite the vicinity of the desert, Luderitz is enjoyable, and you’ll be glad to spend a couple of days there, visiting the city and its surroundings.

Here are five things you absolutely must not miss in Luderitz.

What To See And Do In Luderitz Namibia

The historical buildings.

Examples of colonial architecture and Art Nouveau buildings are scattered around Luderitz and can be easily seen on a walk around town. The Deutsche Africa Bank building, which dates back to 1907, is the most important colonial building in Luderitz and a national monument.

The Felsenkirche, or Rock Church, is located on Diamond Hill: it’s a vertical gothic style church that was consecrated in 1912 and declared a national monument in 1978. The best views of the church are from the Luderitz Nest Hotel.

The Rock Church dominates Luderitz, Namibia's skyline.

Other beautiful colonial buildings are the Gluck Auf, built between 1907 and 1908. It was built for a lawyer employed by the diamond companies of the nearby Kolmanskop (more on this in a bit), and it became a national monument in 2014.

The Goerkehaus was built between 1909 and 1911 and belonged to Hans Goerke, manager of the diamond company – another national monument.

The Kreplinhaus, another national monument and built in 1909, used to be the residence of the first mayor of Luderitz, Emil Kreplin.

Lastly, the Railway Station is another beautiful colonial building: it dates from 1904 and like the other buildings mentioned is now a national monument.

The local township

Perhaps not one of the most obvious things to see in Luderitz is visiting the local township. A guided tour is a good way to get a better understanding of the relationship between the various communities that live in this part of the country. One thing to keep in mind is Namibia was actually part of South Africa until 1990 and apartheid was applied here too.

Much like in other townships in Namibia and South Africa, the living conditions here vary greatly from place to place, with some examples of government housing next to modest huts built with whichever material is available.

Once a mining town and now completely abandoned, Kolmanskop is about 10 km from Luderitz. It was founded at the very beginning of the 20th century when diamonds were found in the area.

Nature has overtaken Kolmanskop, Namibia

Nature has overtaken Kolmanskop, Namibia

Kolmanskop was a tiny town, yet extremely rich and with great infrastructure. There were beautiful mansions, a general store, a post office, a bowling alley (which is still functioning), a restaurant, and even a train station – with carts that went around the village, taking the inhabitants to the center.

Right outside Kolmanskop, there are some small buildings where mine workers were put in quarantine once they were due to leave town: it was a system put in place to avoid thefts of diamonds by way of swallowing them.

Kolmanskop was abandoned almost immediately when it was no longer profitable to mine diamonds in the region, and the industry reverted to South Africa for better places. Inhabitants left most of their belongings behind, and Kolmanskop became a ghost town with beautifully preserved buildings that have at times been completely overtaken by the elements (namely: sand and wind).

Kolmanskop can be visited on a guided tour, which usually lasts around 45 minutes, after which visitors are free to walk around and take photos.

Bartolomeu Dias arrived in the bay of Luderitz in 1487 and named it Angra Pequena. He then erected a stone cross in the southern peninsula, around 18 km from where Luderitz was founded centuries later. The cross is still visible today, and is one of the landmarks of this part of Namibia. You can walk up via a wooden causeway, which isn’t in very good shape to be honest. But the views of the Atlantic Ocean from there are breathtaking.

The area around Luderitz is packed with wildlife. A short drive from Luderitz, the Luderitz Peninsula is a fabulous place to visit for birdwatchers. The best sighting is that of pink flamingoes, who feed on small fish and shrimps they find on the pristine beaches and waters of the peninsula.

There are several good accommodation options in Luderitz. I don’t recommend camping, as the Atlantic currents and winds and the high levels of humidity mean very cold nights. The best Luderitz accommodation option is the Luderitz Nest Hotel , which has fantastic views of the ocean and an excellent restaurant serving delicious fish and seafood. Booking.com

Steeped in old German architecture, the harbor town of Lüderitz hugs the rough Atlantic Coast in the south of Namibia . The land on which the town rests was bought by Heinrich Vogelsang on behalf of Adolf Lüderitz with the intentions of setting up a trading post, but all that changed with the discovery of diamonds in the area in 1908. The town saw an explosion of bustling mining activities which resulted in a few other towns dotting the surrounding area. As the supply dwindled and other sources were discovered, Lüderitz lost its flair and was reduced to a simple fishing town. The harbor is fairly shallow and does not allow for large vessels to dock. Not to be defeated though, the town still boasts deep history and a host of tourism activities and sights. With dainty German shops and beautiful accommodation establishments, the visitor to Lüderitz will not be disappointed. The coastline is a protected area and recognized by Bird Life for its abundance in various species of birds and for its breeding sites on Halifax Island, Mercury Island and Ichaboe Island. Supporting 96% of the Namibian population of endangered African Penguin, about 80% of the global population of endangered Bank Cormorant as well as around one quarter of the global population of crowned cormorants, the area is of great conservational importance. The Deutsche Afrika Bank, the old post office and the Goerke Haus are just some of the historical buildings in Lüderitz worth a visit. In 1984, Lüderitz regained a little of its lost fame by being the starting point of adventurer Amyr Klink’s rowing attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean. He successfully managed to complete his solo endeavor all the way to the Brazillian coastline.

The Bogenfels rock arch is a 55 m high lime rock formed like a bridge. It is situated at the south Atlantic coast in the middle of the Restricted Diamond Area about 100 km south of Lüderitz.

Bogenfels Tour Intro

Bogenfels and Pomona Tour

Coastways Tours from Lüderitz own a concession and the relevant vehicles allowing them to offer an interesting and unique day tour into the Sperrgebiet. The highlights of this tour are visits to the diamond ghost town Pomona and the prominent rock arch called Bogenfels.

Kolmanskuppe

After becoming one of the richest towns in Africa during a diamond boom in 1910, Kolmanskop was left by all inhabtants in the following decades. Kolmanskop became a ghost town in the desert.

Lüderitz

Franz Adolf Eduard Lüderitz, a merchant from Bremen in Germany founded the town of Lüderitz, named after himself, in May 1883. The town lies next to an open, natural ocean bay, one of very few along the so-called Diamond Coast.

Diamantensperrgebiet

Restricted Diamond Area

The Restricted Diamond Area is also called the Sperrgebiet National Park (proclaimed in 2008) and stretches from the southern border of the Namib Naukluft Park to the Orange River, the border of Namibia and South Africa.

Lüderitz is trapped at the end of a long tarred road that squeezes through the Koichab Pan of the Great Sand Sea to the north, and the forbidden territory of the diamond fields in the south; the Antarctic-fed Benguela current effectively seals off any hope of eastward salvation.

And yet, against all odds and a fits-and-starts upbringing, Lüderitz is a thriving town with little to keep it there but for its isolation and the charm of its incongruous location.

The fascinating and the bizarre mix like sand and sea in this twisted land that requires a two-night visit if not more.

The region fell into German hands one year after a merchant named Adolf Lüderitz bought the bay and the coastline down to Orange River in 1883. The subsequent discovery of diamonds transformed this German enclave into a thriving port, which was promptly forgotten when richer bounty was discovered way down south in Oranjemund.

Lüderitz is an anachronism of 19th century Germany. Its older buildings have towers, turrets, oriel windows, bay windows, gables and steep roofs and the town is locked in a sleepy microcosm that defies modern notions of time.

Attractions in the town include Goerke Haus - a grand restored palace; Felsenkirche - a fine Victorian-Gothic church; the Lüderitz Museum, which has historical, ethnic, flora and fauna displays; Nautilus Hill on a clear afternoon for a taste of the desolation that surrounds the town; and the carpet factory, which is reviving demand for karakul wool.

Lüderitz Bay is dotted with islands and lined with rugged inlets. Daily boat cruises take you along the wild coastline with a good chance of encountering endemic Benguela dolphins, Cape fur seals and a rare breeding colony of African penguins. Birders should look out for Damara terns and greater flamingos.

The Lüderitz Peninsula is a scenic round trip with picnic spots and good photo-ops at Griffith Bay, Sturmvoglebucht, Diaz Point, Halifax Island, Essy Bay, Eberlanz Höhle, Kleiner Fjord and Grosse Bucht.

The ghost town of Kolmanskop is an eerie remnant of the diamond era at the beginning of the 20th century. This sand-filled skeleton of a town about 10km from Lüderitz was once a prospering community with a clubhouse, restaurant, bars, saloons, a concert hall and a free block of ice per household every day. You can buy diamonds here and join a guided tour for a detailed look at the history of the diamond boom.

The alluring Sperrgebiet , or forbidden zone, requires advanced booking, special permits and personal guides - all worth it. Agate Beach is about 5km north of Lüderitz and its black sand sparkles with mica and the occasional agate; Elizabeth Bay, 40km south of Lüderitz, had a 3 x 5km band of diamond-bearing coarse grits and sands; Bogenfels is a signature rock arch rising 55m above the sea and a day trip there goes by way of more ghost towns and abandoned diamond mines.

Leading out from Lüderitz, the road to Keetmanshoop is paved with a few attractions along the way, not least of which is the dramatic emptiness of the Koichab Pan.

Near Aus is the site of freak flower explosions after the erratic Cape-influenced winter rains. The timing and frequency is less predictable than the Namaqualand phenomenon in South Africa, making the experience all the more exciting. A similar phenomenon occurs in the lilyveld valley near Maltahöhe. The lilies are endemic to the valley and they bloom for about a week after good rains. February and March are the best times to catch this rare - and undiscovered - sight.

Another peculiarity inland of Lüderitz is the feral horses that have settled near the man-made waterhole at Garub Pan. Numbering about 150, these horses have adapted to the harsh conditions and roam at will across the Sperrgebiet.

Yet another oddity - and likely explanation as to the origin of the desert horses - is a sandstone fortress called Duwisib Castle . Complete with turrets, battlements, jacaranda trees and a lush lawn, this strange sight perches among the rugged hills as if it were dropped intact by a castle-bearing spaceship.
