Liverpool’s Premier 360° Viewing Gallery

ST JOHNS BEACON

Viewing Gallery Experience

Radio City, one of the UK’s most successful radio stations, gives you a unique opportunity to view Merseyside’s ever changing skyline over 400 feet above the heart of the city centre. St Johns Beacon, one of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks, offers breath taking panoramic views of the Wirral, North Wales, Lancashire and as far as Snowdonia and Blackpool on clearer days.

Stunning views from the heart of the city

The viewing platform at St Johns Beacon is a unique way to see the ever changing landscape of Merseyside and beyond, over 400 feet above the city centre of Liverpool!

The construction of St Johns Beacon began in 1965, its main purpose to provide a ventilation shaft for the shopping complex below, its completion coming in December 1969.

Standing 138 meters above sea level, the tower was the tallest building in Liverpool and remained so until the erection of the 40-storey Beetham West Tower (home to the Panoramic Restaurant), which stands tall at 140 metres.

PEOPLE LISTENING

St Johns Beacons is home of Radio City and Greatest Hits Radio and part of the Bauer Media Audio family. We are proud of our heritage in Liverpool, the North West and North Wales broadcasting to over 500,000 people each week.

We currently broadcast live from the top of the tower with Leanne & Scott on Radio City and Rossie on Greatest Hits Radio.

St Johns Beacon forms a key part of the famous Liverpool skyline. The city is over 815 years old with something for everyone.

Hotels, restaurants, bars, museums, galleries, parks and attractions are ready and waiting for you to enjoy.

We really do appreciate it. Have a splendid evening, and all the very best for 2024. Happy New Year! 🥳 #liverpool #newyear

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dean Sullivan at the age of 68. Known to millions as the loveable rogue Jimmy Corkhill, he was also a good friend and colleague to many here at the tower when he presented his City Talk afternoon programme when the station launched back in 2009. A sad day for the city. RIP Dean! #liverpool

Radio City Tower (St John’s Beacon)

Radio City Tower (also known as St John’s Beacon) is an observation tower the provides panoramic views of Liverpool and the surrounding country with views as far afield as the Lake District and Snowdonia in Wales.

The 138m (452 ft)-high tower was built in 1969 and it is the second-tallest building in Liverpool (the tallest if you count the 10m (32 ft)-high antenna on the roof). The tower was refurbished in 1999 and it is now home to a radio station (using two levels at the top of the structure) as well as an observation deck.

What to see at Radio City Tower (St John’s Beacon)

Although the tower is around the same height as a 40-storey building, the viewing platform is 120m (394 ft) above the ground. This is equivalent to standing on the 38th storey of a high-rise office building.

Because it is not too tall, it is close enough to the ground that you can clearly see the main sights in the city centre. However, it is high enough that you can see well beyond central Liverpool including as far north as Blackpool and the Lake District and south to Cheshire and Snowdonia in Wales.

There is information on the viewing deck that indicates points of interest so you have an idea of what you are looking at.

Despite not really being that high, it is somewhat of a nerve-wracking experience as it is a skinny structure with a massive knob at the top and it can be an unpleasant experience if you’re visiting when there are high winds.

Because there is also a radio station at the top of the tower, you can also see into the studio and watch live radio broadcasts.

Visiting Radio City Tower (St John’s Beacon)

Radio City Tower is located right in the heart of the city centre and it is only a two-minute walk to Liverpool Central station.

The observation deck at St John’s Beacon is open every day but it closes at 5pm so you can’t see the view at night unless you visit during winter when it gets dark much earlier.

It is 558 stairs to the top but the two lifts will whisk you to the observation deck level in just 30 seconds.

The tower is fully wheelchair accessible.

Unlike many other observation towers elsewhere, the tower does not have a bar or cafe. As the tower also has to accommodate a radio station there is simply not enough room for visitor facilities such as a cafe or restaurant. However, there is a vending machine and its location in the centre of Liverpool means that there are plenty of places to eat and drink nearby.

Other things to see nearby include the Bluecoat , the Cavern Club , the Magical Beatles Museum , St George’s Hall , the World Museum , the Walker Art Gallery and the Liverpool Central Library , which are all around a five-minute walk from the tower.

Although you can stay as long as you like, after half an hour or so you have seen pretty much all that you can see.

Book your tickets to Radio City Tower (St John’s Beacon)

Prebook your tickets to the observation deck at the Radio City Tower (St John’s Beacon) in Liverpool. Your tickets will be sent to your phone and you can show your ticket on your smartphone when you arrive at the museum.

Liverpool denied late penalty in thrilling 1-1 draw with Manchester City

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool was denied a last-minute penalty after fighting back to draw 1-1 with Manchester City on Sunday in the final Premier League clash between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola before the German coach steps down at the end of the season.

Alexis Mac Allister struck a 50th-minute spot kick to cancel out John Stones’ first-half strike at Anfield. But Klopp thought his team should have been awarded another penalty after Jeremy Doku’s high challenge on Mac Allister in second-half stoppage time.

VAR dismissed the appeal to Klopp’s dismay.

“Why would the guy in the VAR studio think that is not clear and obvious? What must you have for lunch if you think that is not clear and obvious?” Klopp said.

Doku’s studs caught Mac Allister on the chest in the box as Liverpool mounted a late attack in a thrilling clash.

“He hits him on the chest. Yes he touches the ball before. Does that make any difference on any position of the pitch if your leg is that high?” Klopp said.

It meant second-place Liverpool had to settle for a draw that kept it one point ahead of defending champion City in third and behind leader Arsenal on goal difference. Arsenal moved top after a 2-1 win against Brentford on Saturday.

There has been little to separate Klopp and Guardiola in one of English soccer’s most enduring rivalries and that theme continued in this latest thrilling encounter.

Klopp has announced this will be his final season with the Merseyside club and is aiming to go out in style by winning a second league title and potentially a quadruple of trophies, having already secured the League Cup.

Liverpool is still in contention for the Europa League and FA Cup and a win on Sunday would have given Klopp’s team a four-point advantage over City.

But it looked like Guardiola might secure only his second win against Klopp at Anfield after Stones converted from Kevin De Bruyne’s corner in the 23rd.

Mac Allister equalized five minutes into the second half after City goalkeeper Ederson brought down Darwin Nunez in the box.

Chances came and went at both ends with Luis Diaz missing a one-on-one and City’s Phil Foden and Doku both hitting the woodwork before the penalty appeal.

This was another example of Guardiola’s struggles at Anfield and the potential of Klopp’s rebuilt team, which dominated for long spells in the second half.

“A lot of credit to Liverpool. They proved again what they have done is unbelievable for this rivalry,” said the City manager. “I know how difficult it is to come here and win. The players gave everything. I give credit to the opponents and take the point.”

Guardiola’s sole win at Liverpool’s stadium remains a 4-1 rout in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic when fans were locked out. Liverpool has won five of the previous eight games against City at home.

Guardiola’s team looked like addressing that record when going ahead through a corner routine that had clearly been planned on the training ground.

As Nathan Ake jostled Mac Allister out of position, De Bruyne’s low cross to the near post was met by the run of Stones. With Liverpool’s goal exposed, Stones side-footed past Caoimhin Kelleher from a narrow angle.

The home side equalized shortly after halftime when Nunez seized on an underhit pass from Ake and Ederson hacked him down in desperation.

Referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot and Mac Allister fired high to the left beyond the dive of the goalkeeper.

Ederson appeared to hurt himself when bringing down Nunez and he was replaced by backup Stefan Ortega in the 56th.

City could have restored its lead when Foden was denied with only Kelleher to beat and, at the other end, Diaz fired wide when through one-on-one with Ortega.

Diaz was then denied by a last-ditch challenge from Kyle Walker, while Foden hit the bar when Kelleher’s punched clearance rebounded off the forward.

Substitute Doku hit the post in the 89th and Mohamed Salah, who had also come on as a sub, couldn’t beat Ortega when one-on-one.

Mercato: Liverpool a trouvé son nouveau patron du football pour l'après-Klopp

radio city tour liverpool

How to watch Liverpool vs. Manchester City: Live stream Premier League online, TV channel, odds, pick

It's no. 2 vs. no. 3 in the premier league with both hoping to finish the weekend at the summit.

lfc-mcfc.jpg

What is likely to be the final English league meeting between Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp on Sunday, it will have a familiar feel to it -- a titanic clash at the top of the Premier League that could go some way to deciding the title. Arsenal might disagree but most neutral viewers would agree that if there is a winner between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield then they will find themselves the favorites to be lifting the title in May.

Both sides head to Merseyside in rich veins of form and though neither squad is entirely free from injury concerns, City in particular have that intimidating look to them that so often emerges in the spring months. Form in this particular clash favors Liverpool, however, with the Reds having lost only one of their last 20 home league games against City and even that came when injuries had turned Klopp's men into a shadow of themselves at full strength. With Mohamed Salah back, they should put up a far stiffer fight. Here is how you can watch the match and what you need to know as both teams hope to jump Arsenal and move into first:

Liverpool: Though paths may yet converge in the FA Cup, at the moment Sunday is all set to be the final encounter between Klopp and Guardiola, the end of a second act in a rivalry that has defined first German football and then English. Unlike many of the great rivalries in England -- Don Revie and Brian Clough, Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson, Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho -- the defining trait of this tussle for dominance has been the enduring respect between both parties.

That extends to what may be the last meeting before Klopp departs Anfield, the German using his pre-match press conference to insist that it would be an impossible job for whoever succeeds Guardiola at City, far harder than it will be for the next Liverpool boss. Klopp and Guardiola might be too focused on their work to have built a deep friendship but the former did at least hint at conversations between the two during the pandemic, when both lost their mothers. "He called and we had a talk, but I can't tell you what we said to each other," said Klopp. "I know things you would love to know!"

Manchester City: Their meeting on Sunday gives Guardiola a chance to address a head-to-head record that notably does not favor a coach who has had some of world football's most expensively assembled squads to call on. In 29 meetings between these two teams, Guardiola has won 11. Klopp has won 12 with Anfield proving to be a powerful weapon in his arsenal when these two face off. His City side have not won in front of a crowd at the ground since 2003, back when Guardiola was in the twilight of his playing career.

Asked what it is that makes the ground such a challenge for him, Guardiola said: "The crowd of course but especially the quality of the team. It has always been nice and we accept the challenge."

There is precious little to separate these two and the advantages that City have on the pitch have to be set against the power that Anfield can inject Liverpool with. Pick: Liverpool 2, Manchester City 2
