Gadget insurance: compare cover for your laptop, smartphone, smartwatch and more

Navigate the options when it comes to gadget insurance

gadget insurance comparison

If you’ve never lost your smartphone, cracked the screen of your tablet, or chipped, scraped, smashed or drowned another high-value electronic item, then quite frankly, we salute you. We can see why you'd laugh in the face of gadget insurance.

But the fact is the vast majority of us fall have at one time or another fallen foul of our own clumsiness. And with our devices becoming increasingly expensive – not to mention important to our everyday lives – it’s no wonder specialist gadget insurance is an ever-growing industry.

Traditional home and travel insurance policies are becoming outdated and sometimes fail to cover our mobile devices; the very items that are most likely to get lost, stolen or damaged.

That’s why it's only natural to want to protect our gadgets with an additional insurance package, and you’re in the right place to find out what your gadget policy will cover, what it won’t cover, and who the best insurers are.

What does gadget insurance cover?

Gadget insurance policies can cover a whole array of items – perhaps more than you’d think – encompassing emerging tech as well as old school essentials. The products covered can include smartphones , tablets (including iPads), laptops (including MacBooks), iMacs, smartwatches, sat navs, e-readers (including Kindles) , digital cameras, MP3 players, portable games consoles, VR headsets, drones and more.

Why do I need gadget insurance?

If you’re prone to losing and damaging your devices, a good gadget insurance policy could save you a lot of time, money and hassle in getting a replacement.

What your insurance covers depends on the insurer and the policy plan. Always take a careful note of exactly what your gadget insurance policy stipulates so you don’t get surprised on a technicality and prevented from redeeming your insurance when you need it.

A typical gadget insurance policy will cover you for accidental damage to your devices, theft, loss and breakdown. Other circumstances you may be covered for (but not always) include liquid damage, the cost of unauthorised calls, texts and data when your phone has been stolen, and malicious damage if someone has taken their anger out on your poor device.

gadget cover for travel

Is there anything my gadget insurance won't cover?

As above, this will depend on your products, the insurer and the specific policy you sign up for, so make sure you read the wording carefully. Water damage and breakage through carelessness, for example, may be covered by some policies but not by others.

Additional factors that could prevent you from being covered are the age of the product (a device you’ve had for two or three years may not fall into the policy), a cap on the pay-out for a single incident, and a limit on the number of incidents the insurer will pay out for each year.

Can I get gadget insurance for travelling?

Yes, you can. Aimed at backpackers and holidaymakers alike, there are insurance policies specifically made to cover gadgets while you travel.

If you already have a travel insurance policy, don’t assume this will cover your gadgets on your trip as many don’t. What may be available, however, is an add-on which extends the travel policy to cover your electronic devices.

You may find that these add-ons aren’t as extensive as a specialist travel insurance policy for gadgets, so if you carry a lot of devices while you travel or they’re of particularly high value, it may be worth shopping around for a separate policy.

For those looking for gadget insurance while travelling, World Nomads are perhaps the major player in the market, but you may also want to get a quote from True Traveller who can offer you a policy even if you’ve already begun travelling.

Doesn't my home insurance cover gadgets like these?

If you're currently using your home insurance hoping that will cover your phone, think again. Home insurance only covers the device when in the house and even then it's usually in the event of a burglary or a home fire only.

We have more information on this question in our dedicated Q&A: does my home insurance cover gadgets?

Which gadget insurance providers should I compare?

Among the most popular and well-reviewed gadget insurance policies are Protect Your Bubble, Row.co.uk (covering liquid damage and unauthorised calls as well as the more typical issues) and Loveit Coverit Premium (including unlimited worldwide cover).

If you’re pretty locked in to Apple ’s ecosystem in terms of the devices you own, AppleCare+ may be the insurance policy for you, as this can provides specialist technical support and hardware coverage for iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, Apple TV, HomePods and iPods.

Of course, the major mobile networks also offer their own insurance products (you’ve almost certainly had the sales pitch if you’ve bought a device in-store!). For smartphones, the annual cost of these range from £100 to £180, with Three, EE and Vodafone able to replace your phone the very next day. O2 takes 5-7 days with its policy.

Gadget Cover for travel

These days gadgets are a staple of many travel packing lists. But expensive tech isn’t usually covered by standard travel insurance policies. It’s important to consider extra protection if you’re taking gadgets with you. And it’s easy to add our optional Gadget Cover by paying a little extra.

Add up to £1,000 optional cover for gadgets like phones, tablets and drones

Once upon a time, going away involved passports, insurance papers, boarding passes and more. Now you can travel with just your passport and phone – but many of us take lots of other tech too.

Snapping photos on your phone? Reading on your tablet? Watching a film on your laptop? Capturing vistas from your drone? Keeping kids entertained on a console? Gadget Cover can give you the added protection they need.

We cover a range of devices and gadgets

To make sure you’ve got the cover you need, we offer cover for a range of gadgets, including:

Mobiles, smartphones, tablets and laptops

Computers, games consoles and drones

Common gadget cover questions

What is post office gadget cover.

Our Gadget Cover is an optional extra that provides protection for technology you take on holiday. You can add it to a Post Office Travel Insurance policy to provide cover for a long list of gadgets you might want to take away.

Why add Post Office Gadget Cover to your policy?

Our standard travel insurance policies will only cover a mobile/smart phone up to the limit of £100. They won’t provide complete coverage for any other gadgets or devices you might like to use while on your trip. Our Gadget Cover option is a way to add this extra cover by paying an additional premium.

Is this the same as Post Office Gadget Insurance?

No, Gadget Cover is an add-on for Post Office Travel Insurance policies only. It’s different from Post Office Gadget Insurance , which provides everyday protection for gadgets rather than on your travels.

What does the optional Gadget Cover provide?

Gadget Cover offers protection for phones, tablets, laptops, computers, games consoles (including handheld devices), wearable, activity trackers, smart watches, drones and all accessories for these items. Read the policy wording  for a complete list.

What about items covered by my home insurance?

You would only be covered for items on your home contents insurance if you chose out-of-home cover. Even then your coverage might have a limit well below £1,000.

If you have home contents cover, it’s a good idea to check whether you have cover in place for gadgets you want to take on holiday and whether you need supplementary cover.

What’s gadget insurance?

Gadget insurance, also known as gadget cover, is a travel insurance add-on which covers tech items like cameras or mobile phones. It pays for either repairing or replacing lost, stolen or damaged gadgets while you’re travelling. If you choose to add gadget insurance to your travel insurance, we’ll pay up to £1,500 for the gadgets that you need to claim on in a single trip.

Do I need gadget insurance?

Gadget insurance is useful for anyone travelling away with high-value gadgets like cameras, laptops or phones.

You should check whether you're already covered elsewhere:

  • On your home or contents insurance - home insurance policies often cover gadgets away from home
  • With your phone provider - your phone might still be under warranty, although this usually only applies to mechanical faults

What gadgets we cover

Digital cameras, smart phones, we also cover:.

  • Audiovisual and television equipment
  • Electronic book readers (Kindles)
  • Telescopes and accessories

Check your policy book for the full list.

We'll cover these gadgets up to £1,500 if you bought them new; we can only cover refurbished gadgets from the manufacturer or a reputable retailer.

Guide to your Travel Insurance cover

What isn't covered, gadgets left in public places.

Including tents, cars, hotel storage rooms, or as checked-in baggage.

Unattended gadgets

We don't cover gadgets you leave unattended unless locked in a safety deposit box where available, or stored safely and hidden from plain view in your locked accommodation.

Mechanical faults

This includes damage caused by the failure of electrical equipment, software, or any associated equipment.

Check your policy book for the list of exclusions.

How to add gadget cover to your policy

For new customers, you can add gadget cover as a policy upgrade when buying your travel insurance . If you’re an existing customer, you can add it to your policy through your travel portal .

What is travel insurance with gadgets cover, what does gadget cover include, why do i need to cover my gadgets with travel insurance, what to consider when travelling with gadgets, why more than 3 million people have chosen allclear.

When travelling abroad we buy insurance to protect ourselves, but why not buy add on cover to protect our gadgets aswell? Gadget cover protects your most valuable items such as your camera, phone, tablet etc – giving you peace of mind wherever you go.

Will you want to take pictures when you’re on holiday? who doesn’t! Nowadays, most people use their smartphones to take pictures so nearly everyone will travel with at least one gadget when they go on holiday – and these will often be your most valuable items.

Getting cover for your phone, camera, tablet or laptop, eases the financial pressure of replacing them when you come home if they get damaged or lost on your travels.

You’ll need to make sure you’ve got the right policy so here’s what to look for in travel insurance including gadget cover.

Travel insurance with Gadget Cover insures you for the loss or theft of items such as your camera, mobile phone, tablets and laptops and is usually available as an optional add-on to your policy.

It’s important to remember that standard baggage insurance often does not include any of your gadgets and most standard policies offer levels of cover for single items that won’t be enough to repair or replace expensive gadgets.

With an AllClear policy, ‘Gadget Cover’ is available in the ‘Extras’ section of our quote process. We offer three levels of cover, giving you peace of mind that your valuables are insured around the world!

Gold – maximum 7 items up to £3,000

Silver – maximum 5 items up to £2,000

Bronze – maximum 3 items up to £1,000

Benefits of AllClear Cover

What’s included in Gadget Cover will vary by the provider, and some will offer different levels of insurance to help you tailor your policy.

Here’s a summary of what’s included on an AllClear policy:

Simple 3 step quote process

1. call us or click a quote button on our site, 2. complete our simple medical screening process, 3. get your quotes.

We did some research [1] and found that 6 out of 10 people value the gadgets they take on holiday at over £650. But 4 out of 5 people who had made a claim for lost or stolen gadgets while on holiday have had that claim rejected or only received partial payment. This is because they did not have specialist cover in place.

Gadgets are getting more expensive. They are already an essential part of our everyday lives. So, it’s highly likely that you’ll be taking one or more costly items with you when you travel. Protect your possessions with dedicated Gadget Cover, and have peace of mind.

If you’re travelling with gadgets, there are a few precautions you should take even if you’ve bought insurance. This will help to ensure everything runs smoothly on your trip and that you don’t invalidate your policy.

  • Protect your devices –  screen covers, cases and waterproof bags are usually cheap and worth buying as they help protect against cracked screens and water damage – which tend to be the most likely cause of damage
  • Lock gadgets up –  when you aren’t using your gadgets, leave them out of sight in your hotel room. Lock them in a safe if you have one available.
  • Turn roaming off –  roaming charges are costly, and most destinations have free wi-fi available.
  • Back your data up – back-up your data on portable storage devices or in the cloud to ensure your vital pictures and documents are protected
  • Take extra security measures –  make sure your phone is locked with an access code or similar and if you are going to use public wi-fi networks, consider buying security software. You can also register your devices’ serial numbers on a site like  Immobilise , which makes your gadgets easier to recover if lost or stolen.

We compare cover from up to 61 insurance providers, and 97% of customers rate us ‘Great’ or ‘Excellent.’

Travel Insurance & Gadget Cover

Compare gadget travel insurance.

Tommy Lloyd

Tommy has over 15 years experience within the insurance industry, and his primary focus is helping travellers find the right cover for their medical conditions.

What is gadget cover travel insurance?

When you’re packing for your next holiday, you’re likely to have your phone, tablet, camera and earphones on your list. All these gadgets and electronic items will likely have cost you a lot over the years, so what would happen if someone stole your laptop? Or if your kindle is accidentally dropped in the pool? Having gadget cover on your travel insurance is always a great extra comfort blanket if you’re going abroad, so should anything happen to your belongings you know you’ve got the cover to replace them when you come home.

Specialist Medical Cover

We only work with providers who specialise in covering pre-existing conditions.

No discounts. No pressure. We’ll always show you the best prices from providers.

Why do I need it?

We love a good holiday abroad each year, but what most people aren’t aware of is that your standard travel insurance probably doesn’t include gadget cover, or it won’t cover the more expensive stuff, like laptops and high-spec cameras. Usually, you’ll be covered up to a certain price limit and you may have to pay your excess to claim for them. So if you’re taking quite a few gadgets, cover for them is definitely worth looking at.

What does it cover?

Usually your insurer will cover most electronic devices and handheld technology. If you’re unsure if a specific gadget you have will be covered then it’s best to get in contact with the insurer before you take out the policy, to be 100% certain it will be covered.

Items that are usually covered include:

  • Mobile phone (smartphone / iPhone)
  • iPad / Tablet
  • Digital Camera / Camera Lenses
  • iPod/ MP3 Players
  • Games Console
  • Kindle / e-reader
  • Bluetooth headsets
  • Headphones / Earphones

What are the different types of gadget cover?

There are 3 main types of cover when it comes to gadget travel insurance:

  • Liquid damage: most of our tech items aren’t waterproof (if only!) so when you’re on the beach, or by the pool it’s good to know that if your device gets water spilled on it then your insurance provider will cover the cost.
  • Accidental damage: if your gadget gets accidentally damaged whilst travelling then your provider should cover the costs of the repair.
  • Theft: if your tech belongings are stolen then your travel insurer should replace them, or the missing parts.

How do I add gadget cover to my policy?

When getting a quote on our site, all you have to do is make sure you click on the Gadget Cover button to make sure this is included in your quote results.

When comparing quotes, you could also use our handy filter to only compare those policies that have gadget cover included – letting you compare the price, gadget and medical cover all at once.

What’s excluded from my gadget cover?

Gadget cover doesn’t cover absolutely everything, so it’s just important to look at what is excluded as part of this cover. These usually include:

  • Number of claims – most insurers will only let you make a certain number of claims within a particular length of time.
  • Age of your tech – the gadget must be less than 4 years old for example.
  • UK only gadgets – your insurers may not protect you for tech bought outside the UK.
  • Number of items – if you take any additional gadgets that aren’t already included on your cover you won’t be protected for these.
  • Manufacturing Issues – if there’s a problem with your device due to manufacturing faults you will not be covered for this.
  • General wear and tear – you won’t be covered for lack of maintenance.
  • Viruses – if your device catches a virus whilst on holiday you won’t be covered for this by your provider, so make sure you’ve sorted the antivirus protection yourself.
  • Data – if you loose or damage the data on your phone then your insurer will not pay out for this, so make sure you back everything up!
  • Cosmetic damage – you won’t be able to claim for scuffs and bumps on your travel insurance.

Tips for travelling with gadgets

  • Leave you gadgets in your hotel if you don’t need them, it’s better they’re in a locked safe in your hotel room.
  • Back everything up before you leave, just in case.
  • Protect your stuff, get covers, cases and screen protectors to make sure your devices stay in top condition.
  • Turn off your data roaming on your phone if you don’t have a romancing contract, otherwise you could get some pretty hefty bills. If you’re not sure what contract you have then check with your network provider before you go.
  • Don’t forget to bring your chargers and any accessories your gadgets needs. You might also need a plug adapter too.

Compare travel insurance with gadget cover

The easiest way to get a deal on your gadget travel insurance is to compare lots of different providers all at once. That’s where we come in. We can help you compare multiple providers with your special medical requirements filtered into the results.

So why not have a little look and grab a quote today? Just don’t forget to click the gadget cover button too.

Suppose you’ve had hepatitis or are currently suffering from hepatitis and want to travel. In that case, you should always speak to your doctor or a healthcare professional before booking anything. Looking into specialised medical travel insurance means you can travel with peace of mind that you're covered should anything happen regarding your condition whilst you’re away.

Single Trip insurance is for one-off, individual trips and will cover your specified travel dates. This is usually up to 45 days; however, some insurance providers can cover up to 94 days. Electronics Insurance: What You Should Know Before You Buy

What would we do without our smartphones, tablets and laptops? It’s hard to imagine life without them, and when they go on the fritz, they can be pricey to repair or replace. This is where electronics insurance and extended warranties may be able to help.

Sometimes called “gadget insurance,” electronics insurance pays for damage to your mobile devices in situations where your homeowners insurance doesn’t, such as when your device simply stops working. But do you actually need this insurance?

Here’s a rundown of what coverage you might already have, how electronics insurance works and where to get it.

Are your devices already covered?

You may have more coverage for your electronics than you think. Before you buy gadget insurance, check whether you have enough financial protection through your existing insurance policies or your credit card.

Homeowners and renters insurance

If you have homeowners or renters insurance, electronic devices are likely covered under the personal property section of your policy. This coverage will usually reimburse you if your stuff is stolen or destroyed by a fire, windstorm or other disaster listed in the policy.

Some limits apply:

A home insurance policy typically won’t pay if your electronic device stops working or it’s damaged in an accident.

Portable electronics — including smartphones, laptops and tablets — may be covered only up to a certain sublimit, such as $1,500. (You can usually buy additional coverage, however.)

Unless you have replacement cost coverage , if your electronics are damaged or stolen, your homeowners insurance will pay only their current value. Usually, that won’t be enough to replace them with new items.

Any payout from your insurer will be reduced by the amount of your deductible — the amount of a claim you’re responsible for. So if your $800 phone is stolen, but your homeowners deductible is $1,000, you won’t get anything from your insurance policy.

» MORE: What does homeowners insurance cover?

Extended warranties through your credit card

If you bought an electronic device with a credit card, check your card benefits. You may have extended warranty coverage for the device.

Some Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards will tack an additional year of coverage onto the original manufacturer’s warranty at no cost to you. Because this coverage mirrors the original warranty’s, your device will generally be covered for manufacturer defects but not theft, loss or accidents. Also, some card issuers may offer coverage for your phone if you use the card to pay your wireless bill.

Not sure whether your credit card includes extended warranty coverage? Call the number on the back of your card or log into your online account to view a full list of card benefits.

Learn more about credit card extended warranty policies .

How electronics insurance works

Electronics insurance pays for things a manufacturer warranty or home insurance policy usually doesn’t cover, like accidental spills and drops. If your device is damaged or has a malfunction, you can file a claim to have it repaired or replaced. You may need to pay a deductible or service fee.

A quick note on terminology: When shopping for electronics insurance, you may see terms such as extended warranty, protection plan and service contract. There are differences in how these products are regulated, but from a consumer perspective, they’re quite similar. What the plan is called is less important than what it covers (and what it doesn’t).

Electronics insurance is most commonly available for individual devices such as your phone or laptop. However, some companies offer plans that bundle multiple devices, such as TVs, gaming consoles and home theater systems.

You can pay for some plans on an ongoing, month-to-month basis. Others are good for a set period of time such as two or three years.

Full coverage doesn’t always take effect immediately. Some plans have a waiting period, such as 30 days, between when you buy the coverage and when you can make a claim. There may also be restrictions on how old your device is or how soon you need to buy your plan after purchasing the device.

As always, it’s wise to read the terms and conditions carefully before committing to a service contract or insurance policy.

Do you need electronics insurance?

Whether electronics insurance is a good buy depends on several factors. The biggest one is how likely you are to need repairs for your item.

For example, if your phone has a sturdy, waterproof case and you tend to be careful with your stuff, phone insurance might be a waste of money. But if you’ve got little kids with overeager, clumsy fingers who love to play with your phone, buying insurance might be a prudent move.

Even if you do think you might need repairs at some point, the math doesn’t always work out.

Say you insure your new iPhone for $8.99 per month, with a deductible of $149 per repair. You have the phone (and the insurance) for two years, during which you file a single claim for a cracked screen.

The cost to fix a cracked iPhone screen can be anywhere from $70 to $400, according to HomeAdvisor, a home services website [0] HomeAdvisor . How Much Does It Cost To Fix A Broken Phone Screen? . Accessed Aug 9, 2023. View all sources . Meanwhile, the total cost of the insurance plus the deductible is about $365. In this scenario, the insurance may or may not pay off, depending on the severity of the damage.

Below are a few questions to think about when deciding whether you need electronics insurance:

Do you feel comfortable with the coverage you already have through your home insurance or credit card?

What types of damage would the electronics insurance pay for that your existing coverage wouldn’t?

How much will the plan cost you, including potential deductibles or service fees?

Would having to repair or replace your device on the spur of the moment be a financial hardship?

Where to buy electronics insurance

You can often buy phone insurance through your wireless provider, while manufacturers like Apple and big-box stores like Best Buy sell extended warranties. But you may also want to check out third-party providers such as the ones below.

Akko has two plans: one for your phone only, and the other for your phone plus up to 25 other items such as laptops, tablets, cameras, video game consoles and even power tools.

The plans include coverage for:

Cracked screens.

Spills and submersion.

Accidental damage.

Component failures for phones, other portable electronic devices and TVs.

Mysterious disappearance (one claim allowed within a 12-month period).

Students may be eligible for discounted rates.

Allstate Protection Plans

Through a subsidiary called SquareTrade, Allstate sells plans for individual devices such as phones, laptops, tablets, TVs, cameras and fitness trackers. You can also buy a family plan to cover up to four phones.

A standard plan covers mechanical and electrical failures plus accidents like drops and spills. An upgraded plan adds identity theft recovery services, tech support and one instance of Allstate roadside assistance per year. Neither plan pays for loss or theft.

Phone plans are paid on a monthly basis. For most other devices, you choose a set amount of time for your warranty to be valid, such as two or three years.

Asurion has one protection plan for your phone and two others for the rest of your electronic gadgets. The Home+ Entertainment plan covers smart TVs, gaming devices and other entertainment devices. Or upgrade to the Home+ plan, which also includes computers, tablets, printers, smart-home technology and more.

Phone plans cover the following:

Defects and failures.

Water damage.

Battery replacement.

Theft or loss.

Accessory damage.

Home+ and Home+ Entertainment cover breakdowns due to:

Normal wear and tear.

Power surges.

Dust, heat or humidity.

Drops and spills for certain portable devices such as laptops and wearables.

Unlike the phone plan, the Home+ plans don’t include coverage for theft or loss.

You can buy the Home+ plans on the company’s website, but Asurion phone plans are available only through wireless carriers and other retailers.

Upsie offers individual extended warranties for a wide variety of items, including phones, laptops, tablets and smart-home technology. The company sells warranties on a monthly basis.

Upsie warranties don’t cover loss or theft, but they do pay for things like liquid damage, cracked screens and battery failure, depending on the device.

Deductibles vary by item but range from $0 to $150.
