Cruise travelers will find lots of things to do in Barbados: be it perusing impeccably preserved landmarks (like the Parliament Building and Museum, a couple of churches, or the Synagogue and its Museum).

Most luxury cruise lines (like Regent or Crystal) offer complimentary shuttle buses . If your cruise line doesn't offer a shuttle bus, there is also a paid bus - US $2.00 per person, each way - right outside the terminal. Taxis are also available but it doesn't make much sense to pay extra unless you really need to.

Within walking distance

For those that enjoy walking, the path from the exit of the Cruise Terminal along the ocean up to the historical downtown and the Careenage (an interesting area of Bridgetown) is both safe and pleasurable . Have in mind that it will be hot and you should wear cool clothing, walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen is never frivolous.

Photo of Walking Path to Bridgetown Barbados

Walking Path to Bridgetown

The wide avenue outside the exit gates of the cruise port is the Princess Alice Highway. On the right side, by the ocean, the path is lined with trees and along the way, there are a few places with benches and tables to have a rest. On the left side there are a few places worth a look: the Rolli's Bar and Grill, the Caribbean Cigar Company selling the Royal Barbados brand and the Pelican Village Craft Center .

The Highlights of Bridgetown

Once you pass the Bridgetown Fish Market (on the right) you would have walked already 1/2 mile (800 meters). Around 300 feet (100 meters) more and you will have the alternative to keep walking straight into Hincks Street or turn left into Cumberland Street . The latter will take you to Jubilee Gardens and St. Mary's Church (a major Anglican church in Bridgetown) which is a stone's throw away from the shopping area of downtown (Broad Street and around).

The walk into Hinks Street leads to Wharf Road, a Boardwalk and the Careenage. Along the way, at the Cloister Building, on the left, the Agapey Chocolate Factory is a place to visit if you have a sweet tooth and even consider a tour (1 hour for US$20).

After a right followed by a left turn, you will find yourself on Wharf Road with its boardwalk and it becomes clear that you are in historical surroundings. This is the place where, once upon a time, ships were careened onto a side to be repaired, scrubbed and painted, hence the Careenage eponymous. Now, on the narrow mouth of the Constitution River , sleek yachts, touristic and fishing expeditions boats dock on both banks. Farther along, the Wharf Road borders the National Heroes Square with a statue of Lord Nelson and the imposing Parliament Building which are impossible to miss.

The pedestrian Chamberlain Bridge crosses the river to the south bank. At the end of the bridge, the Independence Arch is a famous landmark and a great photo op. Immediately after, on the left, is the seafront greenery of Interior St. Mary's Church and on the right is where you could have a refreshing drink or a light lunch before the Covid pandemic. Unfortunately, popular places like the Marina Bar and the Waterfront Café have closed down.

For those interested in all things historical, you should return to the National Heroes Square to visit the Parliament Building, St. Michaels Cathedral (built in 1784) and the Nidhe Israel Museum and Synagogue (an absolute must-see regardless of your faith or absence of).

If shopping is on your plans, turn left on Heroes Square into Board Street as this is where the best duty-free shops and departments stores are found.

Among the typical stores found all over the caribbean, here are some othe best shops you will find in Barbados Cruise port:

  • Colombian Emeralds
  • Diamonds International
  • Litlle Switzerland
  • The Royal Shop
  • David Yurman

It took a few calls at Bridgetown Cruise Port for the Editor to realized that the Careenage is very close to the famous Boatyard Beach Bar and Club - less than 1/4 of a mile (400 meters) south of the Independence Arch. In fact, the Carlisle Bay's northern tip is the mouth of the Constitutional River , and on the bay, the Boatyard is just one of the many clubs and bars that line the sugar white sands and turquoise waters of Barbados spectacular beaches of this Bay and where the best snorkeling sites in Barbados are located. However, be aware that Carlisle Bay is close to two miles long.

Editors' Tip: if the Boatyard or any of the beach clubs on Carlisle Bay are on your to do list, it is advisable to get there (or back) by taxi as the walk from the cruise port is over 2 miles (3 km).

  • The official currency in Barbados is the Barbados dollar (BBD) and the exchange rate is approximately 1 USD to 2 BBD. US currency is widely accepted across the island, and most stores and restaurants accept major credit cards too.
  • The port area and the city center are flat and suitable for people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users.
  • Bridgetown city center is located within a 10-15 minute walk from the port. There is a waterfront boardwalk that stretches between Port Barbados’ Main Gate and the historic city center along Princess Alice Highway. The walk is pleasant and scenic. For those who prefer not to walk, there is a convenient shuttle service from the terminal building to downtown.
  • The Barbados Transportation Board operates public buses across the island and you can check bus schedules at www.transportboard.com . Even though this is the cheapest way to get around, this may not be the most convenient due to the ship’s limited time in port.
  • Taxis are probably the best way to explore the island, however, they are not metered. I strongly suggest you visit the tourist information office and get guidance about official fares before hiring the taxi, so you know what to expect and always agree on the price in advance with the driver. Barbados Cruise Terminal Transport

Cruise passengers arriving in Barbados have many options open to them when it comes to transport from the cruise terminal.

You may just be in Barbados for the day, or this may be your final destination for you to disembark and continue to your accommodation. In either case, we have outlined all the options open to you when you leave the cruise terminal building.

» Rolls Royce Bentley » Mercedes » Tour Operator / Coach » Barbados Car Rentals » Taxis

If you are just in Barbados for a day trip, then you may want to go sightseeing or shopping in Barbados .

As the cruise terminal building is right in the heart of the capital of Barbados, Bridgetown , a lot of passengers decide to walk from the terminal building to the Pelican Craft Village.  Here you will find a delightful complex with arts and crafts for sale, which make ideal gifts to take home and provide lovely souvenirs of your trip to Barbados.

It is also about a 10-minute walk into Broad Street where you will find a wide variety of duty free shops selling the latest in designer goods at a fraction of the usual cost.

If you don’t want to go shopping then you could organize to take a tour of Barbados , as there are many companies offering this service either by 4×4 , which will take you off road and let you see parts of Barbados that are only accessible in this type of vehicle.

Or you can take a tour of Barbados in a mini bus or coach to take in many sightseeing options. There are many suitable Barbados Tour Operators who are available to you; if you book these in advance then the tour operator will be waiting for you at the Cruise Terminal Building.

If you haven’t arranged anything prior to arrival then you will find taxi’s waiting outside who will happily take you around the island. You can expect to pay from $75US for a 3-hour tour with a taxi.

If your stay in Barbados is more than one day and you have now left the cruise ship, then you will want to head to your accommodation to drop off your luggage and depending on where you are staying will determine the type of transport options open to you.

If you are lucky enough to be staying at the Sandy Lane Hotel, then a Rolls Royce Bentley will be waiting to whisk you away. A representative from the hotel will be waiting for you with your name on a board.

If you are staying in a villa then a luxury vehicle such as a Mercedes will take you on; again a representative will be waiting for you with your name on a board.

Or maybe you have booked a car rental in Barbados to meet you at the Cruise Terminal, in which case a representative will meet you to complete the necessary paperwork to be able to drive in Barbados; so be sure you have your full driving license from home ready.

If none of the above option applies to you, then you can just take a taxi , as there are plenty waiting at the entrance and they will take you to where you are staying.

Bridgetown: self-guided walking tour map?

Cool Cruiser

I'll be on RCCL AOS the first week of June with our last port stop landing in Barbados. Anyone out there have a map for a self-guided walking tour? Hubby and I are in our mid-50s and looking for a non-excursion outing that day.

Available on line, just Google it

I've gone all over the place and couldn't find one. One link led to a book you had to purchase. I just haven't googled the correct phrase yet, I guess

I'll be hitting this port in Nov.

try googling printable maps of bridgetown or check out this site.

Thanks very much!

your welcome Tiggernme! I like it too!

Click on "Things to do" it has a lot of great ideas. If you put in the search bar Walking Bridgetown" it has some great idea's too. If you check out the Interactive Maps, there's a slew of maps toward the bottom by region done by Artist. Actually the whole site if you click around is awesome!!!

I'm also in my 50's and am thinking walking Swan, Board St. in the morning, then down to Wharf through Independence Square, then onto The Boatyard and relax on the Beach.

I've also found similar maps to St. Thomas, St Maarten, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, San Juan, which are all the ports I'll be in.

Enjoy your time while your there!!!

Haha

here's another site with downloadable town maps

Luganville (Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu)

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

Luganville cruise port

Region Australia - New Zealand - Pacific Ocean Islands

Local Time 2024-03-29 14:28

Port Luganville cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Luganville (aka Santo) is the 2nd largest port city in Vanuatu (after Port Vila, Efate Island ), with population around 13,000. The city is located on Espiritu Santo Island's southeastern coast.

Cruise ships to Espiritu Santo Island either dock at Luganville or anchor in Champagne Bay (near Hog Harbour, island's northeast coast).

Port Luganville is one of Vanuatu's busiest seaports used for transshipments for cacao and copra (dried coconut). Segond Channel provides the town with an exclusive, well sheltered harbour.

During WW2 (1939-1945), about 40,000 US military were stationed in the city, operating 3 bomber airfields, docking wharf and drydock. Town's main street houses most of the commercial businesses, shops, tourist boutiques, all-in-one stores (supermarkets), municipal building, market. The street is unusually wide as an US base commander insisted its width to allow 4 army tanks to be driven along the road side by side. Smaller roads and side streets serve the residential zones.

Vanuatu Islands (officially Republic of Vanuatu) is an island nation located in the South Pacific. The islands cover a total area of approx 12190 km2 (4706 mi2) and population around 290,000. Large cruise ships to Vanuatu Islands dock (anchor) either at Luganville or Champagne Bay (near Hog Harbour, in the northeast part of Espiritu Santo Island).

The archipelago is of volcanic origin and is situated some 1750 km (1090 mi) east of northern Australia, east of New Guinea, 540 km (340 mi) northeast of New Caledonia, west of Fiji and southeast of Solomon Islands .

The tourism industry in Vanuatu is a major revenue source as the archipelago is widely recognised as a premier vacation travel destination - especially for coral reef scuba diving. A unique attraction to scuba divers is the wreck of the US luxury cruise ship President Coolidge (converted troop carrier) on Espiritu Santo Island. Sunk during WW2 (1939-1945), the vessel is among the world's largest shipwrecks accessible for recreational diving.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse: What to do if you booked cruise out of Baltimore

barbados cruise terminal map

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has crippled transportation around Baltimore and caused people to scramble to find alternatives.

After Tuesday's disaster, drivers have had to find alternate routes to get into Baltimore, and vessel traffic was suspended indefinitely from the Port of Baltimore, causing people who booked cruises to wonder what's next.

What happened to the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore?

A major span critical to East Coast shipping collapsed early Tuesday morning after it was struck by a large cargo ship.

The  cargo ship Dali  struck the Key bridge around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday after experiencing electrical problems, officials said. The  984-foot ship sailing  under the flag of Singapore was slated to arrive early next month in Sri Lanka, according to MarineTraffic, a global ship tracking service. The bridge then collapsed into the Patapsco River.

Which cruise lines dock at the Port of Baltimore?

According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore. Carnival Cruise Line, American Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International have cruises scheduled to leave the port.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse: Cargo ship hits bridge in Baltimore, causing collapse. Here's what we know so far

What are cruise lines doing with the Port of Baltimore closed?

Carnival Cruise Line said Tuesday it's temporarily moving Carnival Legend's Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

Carnival Legend is scheduled to return from its current voyage on Sunday, March 31. It will now return to Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday. Passengers will be provided complimentary bus service back to Baltimore. Carnival Legend’s next seven-day itinerary on March 31 will then operate from and return to Norfolk. Guests on the current and upcoming cruises are being informed of this change.

Carnival Pride has a trip scheduled for April 28. The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a release. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean’s  Vision of the Seas  has a roundtrip itinerary scheduled to depart Baltimore on April 12, according to the cruise line’s website.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” a spokesperson for the line said in an email to USA TODAY. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

American Cruise Line

American Cruise Lines  has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at present our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian doesn't have a booking out of Baltimore until September on Norwegian Sky . The cruise line is in contact with the port and will contact passengers and travel partners if changes are made.

Alternate driving routes for the Baltimore bridge

Drivers going from Wilmington to Baltimore or Washington should take I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However, the Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are  some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13 feet and 6 inches high or 8 feet wide may not use the I-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14 feet and 6 inches high or 11 feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

Crew member on DALI said everyone on board was safe hours after bridge collapse, official says

From CNN’s Amy Simonson

A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.

Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning.

He said there were 22 members aboard the ship from India who were setting sail earlier Tuesday morning and were heading toward Sri Lanka.

“I was able to reach out to a crew member very early this morning around 5:30 (a.m. ET) or 6 (a.m. ET) and get a message to them asking if they were OK,” he said. “That crew member responded within just a few minutes advising that the crew was safe, and everybody that [was] on board was safe.”

Middleton was told by the ship's captain Monday that the vessel was going to take a longer route to avoid risks along the Yemen coast.

“When I was out with the captain yesterday, we were talking while we were driving, and he advised that they were sailing down and around the tip of South Africa in order to avoid the incidents that are going on off the Yemen coast, and it was a safer way to go,” he said.

Middleton said the  Apostleship of the Sea  is a ministry to seafarers with members that spend time in the port and on the vessels as a friendly face to the seafarers that visit the Port of Baltimore, “taking care of their needs to make sure that they're reminded of their God-given human dignity when they're here in Baltimore.”

Search operation ends in "heartbreaking conclusion," Maryland governor says. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday, March 26.

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day."

Late Tuesday, it was discovered that two of the construction workers who went missing after the bridge collapsed were from Guatemala , the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late Tuesday.

Here's what you should know to get up to speed:

  • The victims: Eight people were on the bridge  when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and was later  discharged , fire official and the medical center said.
  • The incident: Video shows the moment the entire bridge structure falls into the water, as the ship hits one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the  ships lights flickered  and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop incoming traffic from going onto the bridge.
  • Response efforts: Earlier, dive teams from various state and local agencies were brought in to assist in search-and-rescue operations, according to Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr.. The mission started with 50 personnel and continued to grow before the Coast Guard announced Tuesday evening that it was suspending its active search-and-rescue operation and transitioning to a "different phase."
  • The investigation: Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into  how the bridge was built  and investigate the structure itself. It will "take time to dig through" whether the bridge had ever been  flagged for any safety deficiencies , NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
  • Rebuilding the bridge: US Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the path to rebuilding the bridge will be "long and expensive." Senior White House adviser Tom Perez told reporters Tuesday “it’s too early” to tell how long it will take to rebuild the bridge. President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to bear the full cost of rebuilding the collapsed bridge, noting that it will not wait for the company who owns the container ship DALI to shoulder the costs. Funding could come from the Federal Highway Administration as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but it may require additional funding from Congress.

2 of the missing construction workers from bridge collapse were from Guatemala, foreign ministry says

From CNN’s Allison Gordon, Flora Charner and Amy Simonson

Two of the construction workers missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore were from Guatemala, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Tuesday.

Those missing included a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén. The other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula, the statement said.

The ministry said both were part of a work team “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”

The statement did not name the two people missing, but it said the country’s consul general in Maryland “went to the area where the families of those affected are located,” where he hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both missing people.

The consulate   also issued a statement Tuesday saying its consul general in Maryland "remains in contact with local authorities," and also confirmed that two of those missing "were of Guatemalan origin.”

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

State and federal officials have not released information about the identities of any of the six missing workers.

Underwater mapping of bridge collapse area to begin Wednesday, Baltimore fire chief says

From CNN's Jennifer Henderson

Search operations near the Key Bridge collapse have shut down for the night due to dangerous conditions, but the process of underwater mapping with many local, state and federal dive teams will begin Wednesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday night.

Wallace said the portion of the Patapsco River is “tidal influenced, so it goes through tide cycles just like the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay does.”

The water depths in the area under the bridge vary from 40 feet to more than 60 feet, Wallace said. The deeper the divers go, the colder the temperatures they encounter, and the visibility is zero, he added.

Wallace said when crews arrived Tuesday morning, the surface water temperatures of the Patapsco River were about 47 degrees with an air temperature of 44-45 degrees.

Here's what you should know about the historic Francis Scott Key Bridge

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday after a massive container ship lost power and crashed into the iconic Baltimore bridge, sending people and vehicles into the frigid Patapsco River.

Six people, believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead and the Coast Guard has ended its active search and rescue mission.

Here's what you should know about the historic bridge:

  • How old?: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also referred to as just the Key Bridge, opened to traffic in March 1977 and is the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA.) It crosses over the 50-foot-deep Patapsco River, where former US attorney Francis Scott Key found inspiration to write the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, the MDTA says.
  • How long?: The bridge was 1.6 miles long when standing, MDTA reports.
  • Traffic volume: More than 30,000 people commuted daily on the bridge, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
  • How much did it cost?: The bridge cost $60.3 million to build, MDTA says. Since its collapse, President Joe Biden said he’s committed to helping rebuild the bridge as soon as possible.
  • About the port: Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. It handled a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion, in 2023. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. Dali is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The ship is about 984 feet long , according to MarineTraffic data. That’s the length of almost three football fields.

Baltimore woman says bridge collapse was "like a piece of family dissolved"

From CNN's Kit Maher

For longtime Baltimore resident, Ceely, who opted not to share her last name, seeing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  Tuesday was deeply personal.

“I was very heavy-hearted,” Ceely told CNN. “Very tearful, thinking about the families whose loved ones may be in the water and just remembering when the bridge was constructed, and it was just like a piece of family dissolved.”

Ceely was at a prayer group Tuesday morning when she saw the news. She recalled being afraid when she first crossed the bridge while in Ford Maverick in 1975, but grew to like it because it saved time on the road.

“It was a main artery just like a blood line. It was a main artery to the other side of town. It was awesome. It beat going through the city all the time,” she said.

Elder Rashad A. Singletary , a senior pastor who led Tuesday night’s vigil at Mt. Olive Baptist Church told CNN that many church members watched the bridge's construction.

"It’s a part of the community. A lot of our individuals in our congregation drive that bridge to go to work, and so now it’s really a life changing moment,” he said.

"Heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," Maryland governor says as Coast Guard ended search operation

People look out toward the Francis Scott Key Bridge following its collapse in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26.

More than 18 hours after the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it was a heartbreaking conclusion after the Coast Guard ended the search-and-rescue operation for the six people who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

It's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," he said.

"We put every single asset possible — air, land and sea" to find the missing people, he told reporters on Tuesday evening. "While even though we're moving on now to a recovery mission, we're still fully committed to making sure that we're going to use every single asset to now bring a sense of closure to the families," the governor added.

6 people presumed dead after Baltimore bridge collapse, Coast Guard says. Here's what we know

As the sun sets in Baltimore, six people are presumed dead after a major bridge collapsed overnight Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. The Francis Scott Key Bridge came down around 1:30 a.m. ET after a cargo ship collided with it.

The Coast Guard said it has ended its active search-and-rescue operation for the missing construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

  • What we know: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and has been discharged . The Coast Guard has been searching for six other people. But, around 7:30 p.m. ET, the Coast Guard said it has transitioned to a “different phase” of operation, now it did “not believe we are going to find any of these individuals alive,” Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. The vessel is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, a State Department spokesperson said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the collapse. A team of 24 experts will dig into nautical operations, vessel operations, safety history records, owners, operators, company policy and any safety management systems or programs, said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. A voyage data recorder will be critical to the investigation, she added.
  • Vehicles on the bridge: Officials are also working to verify the numbers of how many cars and people were on the bridge, Homendy said. Gov. Wes Moore said the quick work of authorities in closing the bridge had saved lives . Radio traffic captured how authorities stopped traffic and worked to clear the bridge seconds before the impact . Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said there is a “ distinct possibility ” more vehicles were on the bridge, but authorities have not found any evidence to support that.
  • Looking ahead: NTSB will look into how the bridge was built and investigate the structure itself, including if it was flagged for any safety deficiencies , Homendy said. The federal government has also directed its resources to help with search and rescue, to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge, Vice President Kamala Harris said . Earlier, President Joe Biden said t he federal government will pay to fix the bridge.
  • The economy: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned the collapse will have a serious impact on supply chains . Until the channel is reopened, ships will likely already be changing course for other East Coast ports. Ocean carriers are already being diverted from the Port of Baltimore, where the bridge collapsed, to the Port of Virginia to “keep trade moving."

Coast Guard says finding survivors unlikely after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

What we know.

  • A major bridge in Baltimore partially collapsed overnight after it was hit by a cargo ship. Brawner Builders Inc. told NBC News that it had a construction crew on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed.
  • Six people who were plunged into the river when it collapsed are presumed dead. Two people were rescued early in the day. Authorities believe all eight people were part of the construction crew.
  • By evening, the Coast Guard said the mission had transitioned from search and rescue to recovery. Authorities believe all eight people were part of the construction crew.
  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River, was hit by the 948-foot Dali containership, the Coast Guard told NBC News.
  • Dramatic video shows the moment the bridge appears to snap and then tumble into the river after the vessel strikes one of its supporting structures.

Unfounded conspiracy theories spread online after Baltimore bridge collapse

barbados cruise terminal map

Kalhan Rosenblatt

Outlandish conspiracy theories circulated on X after  a containership struck a major bridge in Maryland, causing it to collapse, early this morning.

The ship hit a supporting structure of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which is southeast of metropolitan Baltimore. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and said the calamity was most likely the result of an accident and not an act of terrorism.

As  rescuers search for survivors , some online conspiracy theorists have tried to uncover a nonexistent plot to explain the collision.

Major news events — like the  pandemic ,  natural disasters  and  mass shootings  — now consistently serve as fodder for fringe figures, many of them on the far right, to amplify their world views, which often feature shadowy cabals or major unseen threats.

BALTIMORE — The scene from the sky provides a view of the damage to the bridge after the deadly collapse.

Trade association director says ship’s pilot tried to slow down

The Associated Press

The head of a trade association for maritime pilots says the pilot of the ship that caused the Baltimore bridge collapse tried to slow it down before the crash.

Clay Diamond, executive director of the American Pilots’ Association, said he has been in close contact with officials from the Association of Maryland Pilots, who described to him what happened as the ship approached the bridge. He said that when the ship was a few minutes out, it lost all power, including to its engines.

The pilot immediately ordered the rudder hard to port to keep the ship from turning right and ordered the port anchor dropped, which it was, Diamond said. The pilot also contacted a dispatch office to get the bridge shut down.

Diamond said widely circulated images show the ship’s lights turning off and then back on, sparking questions about whether the vessel had regained power. But, he said, the emergency generators that kicked in turned the lights back on but not the ship’s propulsion.

Every foreign-flagged ship coming into U.S. waters must have a state-licensed pilot on board. Pilots board the ships before they enter the local waterways and take “navigational control” of them, he said, meaning they give orders for the ships’ speed and direction.

“These are among the most highly trained mariners in the world,” Diamond said.

Drone video shows breadth of bridge collapse

Dennis Romero

Drone video recorded by the National Transportation Safety Board shows the breadth of the Baltimore bridge collapse.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said earlier today that her agency is leading the investigation.

The board says video captured after a major transportation accident can help it document wreckage, assess first responders' reactions, help train future investigators and serve as an element in an inquiry's conclusions.

Gov. Wes Moore told Biden that Maryland is counting on his help, the governor said on NBC News’ “Top Story with Tom Llamas.”

“I told the president that we need him. and the President said, ‘And you got us,”’ Moore said.

“Hearing the president earlier at a press conference saying that we were going to rebuild this together, it’s watching the secretary of transportation spend the afternoon in Baltimore," Moore said. "It meant the world to us, because it really showed that this administration is going to stand with us every step of the way."

Moore said the bridge's collapse highlights the vital role infrastructure plays in America.

"It is important that people have a sense of competence in the roads and bridges and tunnels that we have, you know, not just in our state but all throughout our country,” he said.

Carnival temporarily moves Baltimore-based cruise ship to Virginia

Carnival Cruise Line said it was moving its Baltimore-based cruise ship to Norfolk, Virginia, temporarily as recovery efforts in the Patapsco River were ongoing and affecting harbor traffic.

The company ports its Carnival Legend cruise ship in Baltimore, where passengers board for cruises to the Bahamas.

The 1,062-cabin vessel is off Florida en route to the Bahamas, according to cruise ship tracker CruiseMapper.com.

When that voyage concludes Sunday, passengers will disembark at Norfolk, and transportation back to Baltimore will be provided, Carnival said in a statement today.

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in the company's statement, “Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore."

Finding survivors is unlikely, Coast Guard official says as search for survivors ends

George Solis

The search for survivors has concluded, a Coast Guard official said.

Rear Adm. Shannon N. Gilreath said at a news conference that search-and-rescue operations were being suspended and would transition into a new phase — a search for bodies and their subsequent recovery.

"Based on the length of time that we've gone into search the extensive search efforts that we put in it, the water temperature, at this point we do not believe that we're going to find any of these individuals still alive," he said.

The Patapsco River's water temperature in Baltimore was 49 degrees before nightfall, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data. Experts say surviving in water that cold for more than a few hours is unlikely without a wetsuit or other gear.

The superintendent of state police, Col. Roland L. Butler, said divers would be deployed in the morning with a mission of recovering the bodies of six workers.

Authorities said the divers faced limited to no visibility in the water today, with the possibility bridge debris could injure them or breach diving gear.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," Butler said.

He said the location of the six was still unknown.

Butler also said that while authorities had no information to suggest additional victims or vehicles slipped into the water amid the bridge collapse, such an outcome could not be ruled out.

Longshoreman who loaded containership thought call about collision was fake

When Port of Baltimore longshoreman Shawn Jackson, who helped load the containership Dali, got a call from his father that the massive vessel had struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused it to collapse, he didn’t believe it.

“When I got the phone call, I thought it was fake,” Jackson, 31, said today.

Social media and then the news reports showed what had happened to the ship and the more-than-mile-long bridge. Six workers who were on the bridge are presumed dead, officials said.

“When I woke up this morning, I almost wanted to cry, man,” Jackson said.

Jackson was not present when the shop struck the bridge early this morning, but he helped load it. There was nothing strange or unusual about it.

“Just a regular day,” he said. “I would never have thought in a million years that would happen.”

Wife who says husband is among among missing awaits news near the bridge

María del Carmen Castellón says that her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, is among the missing and that she's in a restricted area near the bridge awaiting news.

He was working on the bridge overnight, one of six contracted workers who are unaccounted-for, when it collapsed.

Other relatives have made it to the restricted area and have so far been allowed to stay, Castellon said on the phone.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said when she was reached on the phone by NBC Spanish-language partner station WZDC-CD, better known as Telemundo Washington D.C.

Asked how she feels, Del Carmen said, “Devastated, devastated because our heart is broken because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Jesús Campos, Luna’s co-worker, said the situation was heart-wrenching. He said his co-workers, some of whom he's known for years, were working on concrete replacement when the bridge went down.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening," he said. "We are human beings, and they are my folks."

Campos earlier told a local publication, The Baltimore Banner , that the missing are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Construction company executive says 6 workers presumed dead

Valeriya Antonshchuk

Six workers are presumed dead after the disaster that took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, confirmed today.

The Associated Press earlier reported that six workers were presumed dead, citing Pritzker.

There was one survivor, Pritzker told NBC News. The company is not releasing names at this time.

The Coast Guard has said that it deployed boats and a helicopter for a search-and-rescue operation, and it has not announced any change in the search status.

Maritime safety has improved in recent decades, but risks remain

barbados cruise terminal map

Jason Abbruzzese

Steven Mallam, a senior researcher at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, said in an email that maritime safety has improved in recent decades even as shipping has grown in a variety of ways, from the number and size of ships to the amount of cargo that is sent across oceans.

Still, risks remain.

"Overall, maritime operations in general have made big steps in safety and reliability over the past few decades, however, incident and accidents are still continuing to occur," he wrote in the email.

He pointed to the Ever Given, a large containership that got stuck in the Suez Canal in 2021, and the collision of a U.S. guided-missile destroyer with an oil tanker as examples of some recent maritime mishaps.

"There are variations from year to year of course, but the general trend is a much improved safety record," he added.

Buttigieg downplays concerns about U.S. bridges, calls Baltimore incident and collapse 'unique'

barbados cruise terminal map

Matt Lavietes

Speaking with reporters this afternoon, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg sought to tamp down concerns about the safety and durability of other bridges in the country.

"This is a unique circumstance," Buttigieg said. "I do not know of a bridge that has been constructed to withstand a direct impact from a vessel of this size."

Buttigieg also promised that the Biden administration would provide Marylanders with support "for as long as it takes," noting the significance of the Key Bridge to the city of Baltimore and to the nation.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure. It has been part of the skyline of this region for longer than many of us have been alive."

Buttigieg added that the "path to normalcy will not be easy," quick or inexpensive.

"So in many ways, our work is just beginning to rebuild this bridge and deal with impacts in the meantime, to reopen this port and deal with supply chain impacts in the meantime," he said. "But today we are most acutely focused on the emergency operations underway and on the families that have been impacted."

Buttigieg says collapse will have a 'major and protracted impact' on supply chains

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg acknowledged that the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge will have a "major and protracted impact" on supply chains.

"There is no question that this will be a major and protracted impact to supply chains," Buttigieg said, addressing reporters Tuesday afternoon. "It’s too soon to offer estimates on what it will take to clear the channel and reopen the port."

The Port of Baltimore is the biggest automobile shipping hub in the country.
