14 Epic Rome Night Tours for 2024
Rome, Italy is a magnificent capital city- it is full of history, amazing food, and beautiful views. We have spent weeks exploring Rome and still discover new favorite places beyond the most famous iconic sights. Rome is especially beautiful at night when the monuments light up, and the crowds have diminished. A Rome night tour is a fantastic way to see another side of this stunning city.
We spent six weeks in Italy during our Family Year Out, when our kids were 5 and 7. We loved exploring Rome, from touring the Colosseum to eating as much pizza and pasta as possible. As full-time travelers, we have returned several times, including to check out the Christmas markets and festive lights.
Rome has a lovely temperate climate- which makes visiting any time of year a great idea. However, in the summer, it can be quite hot, and taking advantage of the cool evenings to tour Rome at night is a great way to explore the Eternal City. During the cooler Fall and Winter months, the sun sets earlier and an evening tour of Rome is a great activity before dinner.
A night tour of Rome also provides peace of mind when venturing out after dark. While Rome is a very safe city, many people feel more comfortable being out late with a group than on their own.
In this post, we’ll cover the best night tours of Rome- from night walking tours to Vespa tours, tours of the Vatican, and other specialized tours. There’s sure to be a night tour of Rome that will be the highlight of your next trip to Rome!

Why Take a Tour of Rome at Night?
We love night tours of Rome as an easy way to see some much of Rome. Here are a few of the top reasons to take a tour of Rome at night!
Rome can get hot. In the evenings, you’ll watch the sky fade to a beautiful sunset, and then the city will light up around you and you’ll enjoy cool evening breezes. And winter, when the sun sets earlier, even families with young kids can take a night tour to experience the magic of Rome at night and still not be out too late.
Fewer Crowds
In every season, the evening and night hours are less crowded than the daytime. Don’t worry though, Rome is still a lively place at night! Take advantage of after-hours to see major sites like the Colosseum, or enjoy a delicious food tour of Rome.
Making Friends
There are private tours available if you’d like to customize your night tour of Rome, but we always enjoy meeting new people on small group tours.
Expertise of a Local Guide
All of these tours provide background on Rome and the history of the city so you’ll learn something and get context for what you are seeing. In such a large city, it’s tempting to DIY your visit, but with a local guide, you’ll really appreciate the history of Rome, and know that you aren’t missing any details!
Safety at Night
Rome is a very safe city, and you should be safe walking around at night in the tourist districts. However, we always appreciate the added safety that numbers bring, and being on a tour means you don’t have to worry about where you are, or how you are getting home (and whether your cell phone is charged).
Exteriors Only
Most night tours of Rome will take you to see the outside of churches and monuments, as well as to viewpoints around the city. While many tours stop at the Colosseum for photos and to talk about the UNESCO World Heritage Site, most tours do not enter the Colosseum. The same holds true for the Roman Forum and other major sites.
Rome is magical, lit up at night- the monuments that Rome is famous for, from the Pantheon to the Trevi Fountain, all look different at night. Evening is also a great time to take a walking tour focused on the darker side of the city, or to explore the Roman catacombs and learn about hidden religious practices.
Even in the colder months, the cafes still put tables out on the sidewalks, with the addition of heat lamps and blankets in case you need them. We loved wandering around in the evenings when we visited in December. With twinkling lights and cozy cafes, this is a city that embraces the evenings all year round.

Visiting the Vatican by day means huge crowds, even with skip-the-line tickets, so visiting at night is the best way to avoid queues.
During the three-hour evening tour, your guide will show you the amazing artefacts on display at the Vatican Museums.
These include the stunning Gallery of the Candelabra, the intriguing Gallery of Maps, the Gallery of Tapestries and the (rightly) world-famous Raphael Rooms and their incredible frescoes.
Speaking of frescoes, it’s then time to step inside the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel to gaze at Michelangelo’s masterpieces in their full glory.
It’s not hard to be impressed with the sights on offer during this night-time Roman excursion.

Rome Colosseum Night Tour
- Great for balmy Roman summer nights as it’s mainly outside
- Walk around the arena floor where the gladiators actually stepped
- Spot graffiti from the middle ages
- See the once bustling market place around Trajan’s Column
- Learn about the religious and official structures at the Roman Forum
In the daytime, the Colosseum is a spectacular structure but come night, this ancient Roman ruin becomes a magical sight to behold, as it’s illuminated dramatically.
The tour actually doesn’t start at the Colosseum, but instead at the Colonna Traiana (aka Trajan’s Column), which overlooks the Roman Forum.
This tour is a great choice for those who only have one day in Rome , as it allows you to see one of the main attractions in Rome without wasting time in a queue.
The Colosseum in Rome at sunset
You’ll then move on to the Roman Forum itself – free of its usual crowds in the daytime, it’s somehow easier to imagine how it might have been in its heyday.
Then this Rome Colosseum night tour comes into its own as your guide whisks you to the main event itself. Entering the Colosseum, the illuminations highlight the grand stadium.
You’ll be able to see details like historic graffiti, imagine what it must have been like for gladiators back in the day, and snap pictures of the whole thing without tourist crowds getting in your shots.
If you can, I would pair this tour with a hotel near the Colosseum . That way you can relax in your apartment during the day, overlooking this iconic Roman sight, and then head out to explore it once the tourist crowds leave.

It’s your chance to explore the Italian capital in style on a vintage Vespa, it’s a bit on the higher end price wise, but if your Italy trip budget allows for it, this experience will be well worth it!
When I first moved to Rome by then boyfriend took me on a scooter tour of Rome at night . I can confidently say it was one of the best evenings we spent in Rome, and it made me fall in love with the city.

These include Piazza Navona, St Peter’s Square, the Pantheon, Piazza Venezia, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Circus Maximus, the Aventine Keyhole and the Janiculum Hill (one of the best viewpoints in Rome )!
Basically, it’s a little bit of everything – except on a Vespa. A super fun way to see the city.

Best Rome Night Tours
Rome is beautiful during the daytime, but seeing the city at night time is a completely different experience. It’s indescribable, it’s surreal. And there’s only one way that you can Rome’s beauty at night, and that is by taking a Rome night tour. Seeing the attractions lit up against the dark night sky will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.
1. Rome by Night with Pizza and Gelato (max 8 people with driver)
⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (600+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 4 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 8 | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
If you are looking for an all-in-one Rome night tour, then my favourite general tour is the Rome by Night with Pizza and Gelato (max 8 people with driver) . It visits all of the main attractions, and also includes some tasty food!
With over 600 reviews , having an average rating of 4.5/5 is extremely impressive. Rome by Night with Pizza and Gelato has also gained more than 200 reviews in the last few months. It was at 400 reviews when I last updated this just before summer.
When booking a tour, I always like to book a tour that has passed the test of travellers before me. And this tour has certainly done that. And now, it’s passed my test and I recommend it to you.
I can’t emphasise enough how different the sights are in Rome at night compared to daytime. It’s like a completely different city, and this tour will take you from attraction to attraction allowing you to see them all.
It visits the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Vatican City and more! All in one tour! It will be a night to remember, that’s for sure. My personal favourite is the obvious, the Colosseum , but it’s genuinely breathtaking at night when it’s lit up.
As the review above says, the tour guide brings the tour up a notch. Seeing the sights is one thing, but learning about the sights is another thing. And this tour will allow you to get the best of both.
Having such a small group size is really perfect too, as for a night tour, you want a personal experience, not to be sharing a group with 30 people where the guide has to shout just to be heard. Thankfully, this tour is limited to 8 as you are driven around in a small minivan.
As the name of the tour, Rome by Night with Pizza and Gelato , suggests, you also get to eat some pizza and gelato. You get a delicious authentic Roman pizza (or pasta dish if you prefer) and some of the best gelato Rome has to offer.
Combining sightseeing with food is an unbeatable combo in my opinion, especially in Rome where 1) the sights are extraordinary and 2) the Italian cuisine is one of the best in the world.
So if you want the perfect Rome night tour, visiting all of the sights and learning about them along the way, with some tasty food in between, then be sure to book this tour before it sells out for the dates you want!
2. VIP Colosseum At Night Tour With Underground & Arena Floor
⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (2100+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 24 | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
Although the whole of Rome is beautiful at night, as I said, my personal favourite is the Colosseum. I love it during the day, but I love love love it at night. Seeing the orange-yellow glow it creates is just wow! And a VIP Colosseum At Night Tour With Underground & Arena Floor is the perfect way to experience it.
People come to Rome just to see the Colosseum. And I really can’t believe that some people leave Rome without seeing the Colosseum at night . It’s almost like two different attractions.
Even if you have taken a tour of the Colosseum during the day, I would still encourage taking a tour at night. VIP Colosseum At Night Tour With Underground & Arena Floor is the best in my opinion.
The tour is with “Walks”, my favourite tour company in the world. I’ve taken tours with Walks in lots of different countries such as Greece and the USA, but my favourite Walks tours have all been in Rome.
At night time, there’s a fraction of the people, the atmosphere is so different, and of course, it’s lit up. Being in the Colosseum with 100 people instead of 1000 is unbeatable.
It’s so much nicer and you can turn around in a circle without bumping into someone. As the above review says, it’s a surreal experience.
Seeing the Colosseum at night will make you understand why Rome is known as the City of Love . After taking a tour, I sat with my friend outside the Colosseum for hours simply admiring the view and talking into the early hours of the morning. The Colosseum is a special place.
VIP Colosseum At Night Tour With Underground & Arena Floor also takes you to two exclusive areas , which are off-limits to the general public unless you take a tour. The Underground, which is a labyrinth of tunnels under the Arena Floor, and the Arena Floor which is, well, the Arena Floor.
It gives a true perspective of what it would have been like being in the Colosseum two thousand years ago, instead of simply walking around the concourse.
Looking for an unforgettable three hours with memories to last forever? Head to the Colosseum for a night tour, but make sure to book ASAP as spaces are limited to keep the crowds low.
3. Trastevere at Sunset: Rome Food & Wine Tour
⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (300+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 10 | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
Trastevere is often regarded as the most picturesque and romantic part of Rome. The streets and the good food attract travellers from all over the world.
Add a sunset and a glass of wine to that, and you have one of the best tours you will ever take. I present to you, the Trastevere at Sunset: Rome Food & Wine Tour . One of the most picturesque Rome night tours.
Okay, admittedly, this isn’t entirely a Rome night tour, but it is once the sun sets, right? Sometimes in cities, it can be hard to catch a decent sunset, but this isn’t the case in Rome.
I spent 5 days in Rome, and each day I caught an unbelievable sunset. It was Australia-esque. I love sunsets and some of my favourite ever ones have been in Rome.
Trastevere is somewhere that anyone visiting Rome should try to have dinner in at least once. I can’t begin to count how many yummy pizzas and pastas I had there. And the best way to navigate the hundreds of possible restaurants is by taking a food tour.
Trastevere at Sunset: Rome Food & Wine Tour allows you to take part in aperitivo, an Italian tradition where you have a drink before a meal. Taking part is a super authentic experience, which most people won’t get out of a Rome trip.
You also get over 10 food tastings, and 5 Italian wine tastings. If you are a foodie, this is the perfect tour for you. Italian cuisine is one of the most famous in the world, and there’s nowhere better to enjoy it than in Rome.
And there’s nowhere better in Rome than Trastevere! And how could I forget, the gorgeous sunset? All of these things come together to create the most perfect tour possible.
Over 300 people have rated Trastevere at Sunset: Rome Food & Wine Tour at 5 stars , so be sure to secure your spot before someone else takes your place.
4. Alone in Rome’s Catacombs: Exclusive After-Hours Tour with Bone Chapel
⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (950+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2.5 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 18 | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
If you’re looking for a thrilling Rome night tour, then you’re in luck, as the Alone in Rome’s Catacombs: Exclusive After-Hours Tour with Bone Chapel presents just the opportunity you are looking for. Nearly 1000 people have rated it 5/5 , so you know it’s a good one…
Paris is famous for its underground catacombs, Rome not so much. You might not have even known they existed before reading this. But they do. And you can explore them.
I really recommend checking out the Catacombs, even if you don’t take a night tour, they’re really cool. One of Rome’s hidden gems , for sure.
Taking the Alone in Rome’s Catacombs tour gives you exclusive access after dark into the catacombs, where you can explore the network of tunnels connecting Rome underground.
And yes, there are walls filled with skulls just like in Paris. You get to see the Bone Chapel with no crowds at all.
It’s best to take a tour as you can learn chilling stories about the history of the Catacombs and hear your guide tell spooky legends.
As the review above says, it’s considered one of the best tours you can take in Rome . And I can personally agree with this! I was a bit scared taking a Catacombs tour but it was fascinating at the same time. Exploring the catacombs at night just adds a sense of eeriness that you wouldn’t get during the day.
If this sounds like a bit of you, make sure to book the alone in Rome’s Catacombs: Exclusive After-Hours Tour with Bone Chapel tour today.
5. Rome: E-Bike Night Tour with Food and Wine Tasting
⭐ RATING: 4.9 out of 5 Stars (800+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 4 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
There are lots of ways to get around Rome at night, and one of the most fun is by taking an electric bike. The Rome: E-Bike Night Tour with Food and Wine Tasting encompasses both fun and sightseeing (and eating and drinking!) into one, making for a pretty damn good tour.
Most of the tours on this list get around the city by pretty “standard” means such as a minivan or a bus. Not this tour.
Riding an e-bike is incredibly fun, but due to the crowds during the daytime, it would be pretty hard to see the sights in Rome on a bike. But the quieter streets of nighttime make it much easier. Rome was one of the first cities I ever rode an e-bike and it was really enjoyable, especially since you’re surrounded by the sights.
You get to see everything Rome has to offer at night , as you visit all of the main attractions including the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Pantheon and more.
Seeing the sights lit up, to quote the review, is “remarkable”, and I really can’t recommend it enough. It’s magical. If you have ever been to Disney and felt the magic , Rome gives you the same feeling.
And you also get some cheese and wine at the beginning (usually at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore) so feel free to come to the tour with a rumbling stomach! But also, don’t drink too much wine that you can’t see straight to cycle, haha!
By the way, if you haven’t ridden an e-bike before, don’t worry. The guide gives a lesson at the start and won’t begin the tour until everyone is comfortable. However, if you can ride a normal bike, you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. It’s more or less the same but with less effort. And you can go faster too, allowing the group to quickly get around Rome.
Looking for a bit of fun on an e-bike while exploring Rome at night? And fancy yourself some cheese and wine? Be sure to book the Rome: E-Bike Night Tour with Food and Wine Tasting tour to bring about the perfect ending to one of your days in Rome.
6. Rome: Vatican Museums by Night Guided Tour
⭐ RATING: 4.4 out of 5 Stars (40+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
Rome night tours are a great way to see the Eternal City of Rome lit up at night, but did you know you can also step into the Vatican Museums after hours? Well, you can! And the Rome: Vatican Museums by Night Guided Tour is the best way to do it.
If you have ever watched Night at the Museum, visiting the Vatican after hours is a similar experience. No- I don’t mean the Sistine Chapel comes to life, I mean that there are so few people there.
One of the worst parts about visiting the Vatican Museums normally is that they are jam-packed with people and it can be pretty hard to find some personal space to look at something that interests you. Or there are too many feet to see the incredibly beautiful decorated flooring.
Visiting at night bypasses these problems as there are only a few tour groups in the whole of the Vatican Museums at one time. The review above uses the word “magical” and I think this is the perfect description for what the Rome: Vatican Museums by Night Guided Tour offers.
I couldn’t believe the contrast between visiting during the day and at night time. If you ask me, it’s a no-brainer and the Vatican wins every time.
Being surrounded by so many infamous pieces of art with so few people around is incredible, and it’s a million times better than visiting during the busy hours of the daytime.
If you want to visit the Vatican during your trip to Rome – and who doesn’t? – then make sure to head there after hours and book the Rome: Vatican Museums by Night Guided Tour .
7. Rome by Night Walking Tour – Legends & Criminal Stories
⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (950+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
As one of the highest-reviewed Rome night tours of them all, you can be assured that the Rome by Night Walking Tour – Legends & Criminal Stories tour guarantees to impress. It doesn’t get nearly 1000 positive reviews for no reason!
Rome has a fascinating history, in many ways. You only need to hear the word “Rome” to think Colosseum which is 2000 years old, or the Roman Empire, or Italian Capital. Any of these things show Rome has a strong history.
The social media trend in September 2023 of “ How often do you think of the Roman Empire? ” proves this exactly! I wrote the above paragraph well before that trend was a thing.
But Rome also has a paranormal history. And there’s no better way to learn more than by taking the Rome by Night Walking Tour – Legends & Criminal Stories tour.
You can stroll through the beautifully illuminated streets at night while learning about the haunted past (and present????) of Rome, as your guide takes you to some of the key spots for ghosts and other legends in Rome.
As someone who loves learning about history and studied it in school, I loved learning about the lesser-known history of Rome.
Don’t worry if you aren’t the biggest fan of ghost tours, this is also a great way to see some of Rome’s sights at night. That being said, it doesn’t visit the Colosseum though, so this might not be the tour for you if that’s what you are looking for.
But if you want to experience Rome at night and feel the paranormal activity, then this is the perfect tour for you.
8. Vespa Tour By Night with pick up/drop off
⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (1000+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
Have you ever pictured yourself driving through Italy in a Vespa? Well, you can allow that dream to come true as the Vespa Tour By Night with pick up/drop off does exactly that, while showing you how beautiful Rome is at night. It’s one of the most popular Rome night tours.
Riding in a vintage Vespa through Rome is the definition of “riding in style” . You get personally driven to all of the must-see sights in Rome to see them lit up at night.
It’s much like some of the other tours, but the main selling point is the Vespa. It’s an experience in itself, and adding in the Rome attractions is simply a bonus.
There are so many Rome Vespa tours to choose from, but this one is the best one to do at night in my opinion. Whizzing around all of the attractions in a traditional Vespa is quite the night, to say the least.
You also make a stop for coffee and gelato. “ When in Rome, do as the Romans do ” as the saying goes, and Romans love their coffee and gelato, no matter what time of the day it is.
Whether you simply want to ride in a Vespa or you want to see Rome at night, there’s no denying that this is one of the best Rome night tours. As the review says, it’s such a fun way to see Rome at night. Vespas are extremely fun!
Just picture yourself cruising through the streets of Rome, with the classic helmet on, a slight breeze on your face and the sound of the Vespa purring. It’s a sensory experience not to be missed out on.
Sound good? Book the Vespa Tour By Night with pick up/drop off as soon as possible, as there are only so many Vespas available, and I’d hate for you to miss out.
9. Rome: 4-Hour Food Tour by Night
⭐ RATING: 4.8 out of 5 Stars (1200+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 4 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
Rome is a foodie’s paradise, and taking a food night tour of Rome is a must-do for anyone who appreciates Italian cuisine. Rome: 4-Hour Food Tour by Night offers 20, yes 20, different food tastings throughout the 4-hour tour.
There are lots of food tours in Rome , but this is by far one of the best options. The Italian cuisine is my personal favourite out of them all, so to get 20 different tastings is unbelievable.
You get to experience pretty much everything you could possibly imagine about the food scene in Rome. From wine and cheese to truffles and pasta, you get a bit of everything.
Spending four hours treating your taste buds is what people would describe as heaven! If this is your idea of heaven, then this is probably the one of all the Rome night tours for you.
I’m quite a fussy eater (I’m trying to get better I promise) but I still found all of the food on this tour absolutely delicious.
When booking a tour, I like to go with tours that have lots of reviews. It shows that people have taken this tour and it’s generally well thought of. No one wants to take a tour with no reviews right? The Rome: 4-Hour Food Tour by Night has an impressive 4.8/5 rating with more than 1000 reviews! It’s definitely people-approved.
Some food tours – though not really in Rome – often give you cheap and low-quality food, but this couldn’t be further from the truth here.
You are only served the most authentic and most delicious food that Rome has. The guides even take you off the tourist path into lesser-known eateries which are usually even better than the touristy ones.
Looking for the best way to try out everything Rome has to offer in terms of food? Secure your spot on this 4-hour-long eating marathon of a food tour.
10. Rome: Bar Hop and Nightlife Tour
⭐ RATING: 4.3 out of 5 Stars (260+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 5 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
If you are visiting Rome as a solo traveller as I did, or if you simply want to experience what a night out in the Italian capital is like, then you’ll want to check out the Rome: Bar Hop and Nightlife Tour . Spoiler alert, the nightlife in Rome is amazing!
As part of this tour, you are taken to 3 of the best bars and clubs in all of Rome . And there’s also a free drink i ncluded at the start…who can say no to a free drink??
Entry into the clubs is also included as part of your ticket, so all you need to do is turn up and have a good time. If you’re backpacking in Rome , this is the perfect tour for you.
Nightlife tours are always a great way to meet new people and make new friends, and Rome is the perfect place. I left Rome with lots of new friends that I still speak to today, not just from a nightlife tour but from the city itself, it’s so easy to meet fellow travellers!
Of course, make sure you bring your ID (the drinking age in Italy is 18) and comfy shoes for walking, and the tour company are very clever in suggesting you bring a business card for your accommodation, just in case you get a bit tipsy and forget…
Rome’s nightlife will leave you pleasantly surprised, so make sure to book the Rome: Bar Hop and Nightlife Tour if you want the best night out of your life.
11. Rome by Night: 3-Hour Segway Tour
⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (80+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
Want to take one of these Rome night tours but find getting around in minivans boring? How about segways? That’s right, you can take a Rome by Night: 3-Hour Segway Tour and ride from sight to sight on a segway!
One of my favourite things about Rome is that every street is pretty. Around every corner, there is a new fountain or a statue you haven’t seen before. The whole of Rome is simply beautiful.
And one of the best ways to experience this is by simply exploring the streets. And what better way to do so than on a segway? It’s like the e-bikes but even more fun!
The biggest selling point of any of these Rome night tours is obviously being able to see the infamous landmarks in Rome at night, lit up, without the crowds. Which is great, and I love it.
But why not add in a bit of fun to your journey while you go from attraction to attraction? The segways are the perfect solution.
Don’t worry if you haven’t ridden one before, it’s super easy to pick up and it won’t be long before you are cruising the night streets like a boss!
If you’re a fun-lover, make sure to book the Rome by Night: 3-Hour Segway Tour well in advance as there are limited numbers of segways available.
12. Haunted Rome Ghost Tour – The Original
⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (400+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
As I said before, Rome has a haunted past and there are many great Rome night tours which guide you through the paranormal history of the city, but few are as good as Haunted Rome Ghost Tour – The Original . Nothing beats an original!
Being the original haunted ghost tour in Rome, this tour knows what it’s talking about. And know exactly what stories to tell to get the hairs on your arms standing up .
In my opinion, ghost tours can sometimes be a bit meh, oftentimes they are underwhelming. But this wasn’t the case in Rome- not at all.
Thankfully, Haunted Rome Ghost Tour – The Original exceeds expectations and completely obliterates this reputation of ghost tours I have.
You are taken to all of Rome’s most haunted spots, and you get a very hands-on experience, as you are taught how to use dowsing rods , which are used to search for ghosts.
It’s also a small group size, with a maximum of 15 people, making it all the more scary as you visit the spooky scenes in the dark.
I can’t recommend this tour enough, and it offers a memorable night hunting for the paranormal in the streets of Rome after hours.
13. Roma by Night: E-Bike Tour
⭐ RATING: 4.8 out of 5 Stars (320+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
Another great e-bike Rome night tour is the Roma by Night: E-Bike Tour which offers another option. You can choose from 4 different languages on this tour which is really helpful!
Riding around Rome on an e-bike is a really efficient way to see all of the most popular sights in a short period of time. You are, in a nutshell, seeing all of Rome in just 3 hours!
You are pretty much moving as fast as a car, but avoiding the traffic. And trust me, driving a car in Rome can get pretty hectic. All rules of the road are basically ignored.
But e-bikes are easy to ride, don’t take too much effort , and allow you to see the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Pantheon and Rome’s most popular piazzas all in the space of 3 hours. And at night when they are lit up!
Don’t worry either- they provide helmets too. And they even provide trailer bikes if you want to bring the children along , where they can be attached to the back of your bike.
If this sounds like a bit of you, riding through the streets of Rome on an electric bike, then check out the Roma by Night: E-Bike Tour and book your spot.
14. Night Vatican Museums Tour Including Sistine Chapel
⭐ RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars (250+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
Seeing the Vatican Museums during the daytime is pretty cool. Not everyone gets to see the Sistine Chapel in their lifetime. But exploring the museums and seeing the iconic art after hours when there are so few people is a next-level experience.
The Sistine Chapel is arguably the most famous piece of art in the whole world, and seeing it for yourself is a pinch-yourself moment. But being one of only a handful of people in the room makes the memories even more extraordinary.
As the review says, when taking the Night Vatican Museums Tour Including Sistine Chapel you feel like the museums are closed. It almost feels like you aren’t meant to be there it is so quiet. But you are! And that’s the beauty of it. You can explore the museum freely without the crowd like a true VIP.
You also have a guide with you who can help tell you facts and stories about the museum which you wouldn’t otherwise hear. It’s great to learn a bit more about what you are actually looking at.
Unfortunately, since it is such an exclusive tour, it is only available on Friday nights from May to October. If you are visiting outside this window and not over a Friday, unfortunately, this isn’t the tour for you.
But if you are visiting over a Friday in those months, it’s all the more reason to book the Night Vatican Museums Tour Including Sistine Chapel as it’s such an exclusive tour.
15. Rome: Evening City Tour by Golf Cart with Gelato
⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (270+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 2.5 hours | 🏛️ BOOK NOW
Last but by no means least of these Rome night tours, is the Rome: Evening City Tour by Golf Cart with Gelato which offers exactly what it says on the tin. An evening tour of Rome on a golf cart with some gelato included too. What more can you ask for?
Golf cart tours of Rome are actually quite popular, but not something many people know about before getting to Rome. But taking a golf cart tour at night is an even better tour.
Since golf carts are only so big, the tour group is small meaning you have a much more personal experience and can ask the guide as many questions as you like.
The carts are pretty nippy so you can get between the sights quite quickly. And of course, it’s also pretty fun to just drive around in a golf cart. The best part of playing golf in my opinion.
It’s a night to remember , and it’s topped off in the perfect way with some tasty gelato. I can’t think of many better ways to end a night than that, can you?
And it’s always great when the guide is happy to take photos. It’s one of the best things about taking a tour, you are guaranteed to get some cracking photos . And trust me, Rome is one of the best places in the world to get photos.
Sound good? Book your spot on the Rome: Evening City Tour by Golf Cart with Gelato to explore Rome in a golf buggy!

Tour description, tour the colosseum at night after the gates have officially closed for the day..
A Colosseum night tour is one of the most exclusive and enjoyable ways to visit Rome's most famous ruin. The crowds are smaller, the views are better, and the experience is much more intimate. You'll experience the arena in all its glory as you explore the nearly empty arena with your expert guide telling hair-raising tales of its bloody past. Your experience won't just be more intimate, it will be much more comfortable now that the sun has gone down.
You'll start your Colosseum night tour in the historic Jewish Quarter. Take a look at the Teatro di Marcello—an ancient amphitheater that looks like a miniature Colosseum—before making your way towards the main event. Along the way, you'll pass by Piazza Venezia, seeing the monument that represents new Rome and new Italy—and by far one of the most beautiful buildings in Rome to be seen at night. Once you arrive at a scenic vantage point overlooking the Roman Forum, your guide will tell you tales from the empire, whose reach you won't believe.
Trace the story of gladiators underneath the Colosseum and out on the arena floor.
Just as the last of the daytime crowds empty out, you'll step into the magnificent Colosseum itself. You'll head up into the stands first for an introductory stroll around Rome's most iconic monument, hearing stories of its origin and initial purpose. Without the hustle and bustle of the daytime crowds, you'll experience the Colosseum at its most serene, and get a sense of what the atmosphere was like nearly 2,000 years ago—an experience few visitors can claim to have had.
The next stop on the Colosseum night tour is a true VIP experience. You'll head down into the underground area below the Colosseum, where animals and gladiators awaited their turn to fight. The underground may only be visited on pre-booked tours with a limited number of participants, so this is a rare opportunity! Combined with the later entrance time, this makes our Colosseum night tour the most exclusive Colosseum visit available—as well as the most enjoyable.
Finally, you’ll experience your own "Gladiator" moment on the arena floor. Make your way there alongside an official Colosseum guard who will unlock a special gate, swinging it open to reveal that iconic walkway onto the floor. Walk in the footsteps of gladiators as you step out on to the arena floor and scream “Are you not entertained?” into the empty amphitheater (if you so please). This is the most incredible vantage point in the Colosseum, so take your time to soak it up.
Journey through Ancient Rome in a small group of 24 people or fewer.
Seeing the Colosseum in general may be an opportunity that only comes once in a lifetime—and having it all to yourself at night definitely is! Perfect for families, for those who don't like the heat of day, and for visitors who want a different experience, our VIP Colosseum Night Tour is one of our most atmospheric experiences. High demand and limited availability often mean that this tour sells out months in advance, so book now to secure your place! Trust us when we say that this is an experience you'll cherish for decades to come.
Please note: Due to high demand and restricted access, the entrance time at the Colosseum may be granted between 7:15pm and 10:30pm the day of your tour. We will confirm the start time of your tour about 30 days prior to the tour date.

Last year I was in Rome and did a Coliseum tour in the day . . . I didn’t want to go again after that experience but my family wanted to. I am so glad I did! The night tour was a completely different experience and 100% worth it! Going at night without the intense crowds and not in the heat of the day made it so much easier to immerse yourself into the experience and enjoy the information received. You could actually start to think of what it was like so long ago. Book this tour well in advance, you won’t be sorry!

Rome Catacombs at Night Tour Description
Your 2.5-hour tour includes:
Guided tour of Capuchin Crypts
Guided tour of Priscilla Catacombs
A fun English-speaking guide
Maximum group size of 20 people
Private transportation between locations
Please note: Some of the sites on this small group tour are sacred, so both men and women must cover their knees and shoulders at all times. We know that Rome gets quite hot during the summertime, but it's always a great idea to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you to cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.
Capuchin Crypts
Housed beneath the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione Cappuccini are five chapels, each filled with the bones of Capuchin friars who were buried at a time when the Catholic Church permitted burial underneath church grounds. The Capuchin Crypts were not created with the intention of macabre art; the idea was to symbolize mortality and passage of life through the earth.
Without having to wait in line, you’ll visit all five chapels: Crypt of the Resurrection, Crypt of the Skulls, Crypt of the Pelvises, Crypt of the Leg Bones and Thigh Bones, and Crypt of the Three Skeletons. It’s a chilling and fascinating display to experience up close.
Transportation to Catacombs of Priscilla
After your eerie visit to the bone chapels, you’ll hop on a private vehicle for a 15-25 minute drive (depending on traffic) to our next destination, the Catacombs of Priscilla. No need to stress about getting from one destination to the next. Our team will arrange all of that.
Catacombs of Priscilla
The Priscilla Catacombs will be opened with an ancient key right before your eyes so you can explore with hardly any crowds like a VIP. Often known as the “Queen of Catacombs,” the Catacombs of Priscilla stretch for about 5 miles. The site not only served as a burial space almost 2,000 years ago, but also operated as a place of worship for Christians.
Your guide will escort you into three separate sections: Acilii zone, Greek Chapel, and Arenario. Inside, you’ll find biblical artistic inscriptions, such as Moses striking water from a rock, the Madonna and Child and the Sacrifice of Isaac. Finally, whether or not these catacombs actually contain the body of St. Priscilla is a subject of fierce debate.

Something different!
After days of touring various old towns in Italy, this tour was a welcome change. Fiona was very knowledgeable and also shared a little about life living in Rome. On this tour I learned some history that was not taught in school. I now want to do some research and learn more about the Capuchin practices and the challenges facing Christians before the 15th century.

Frequently Asked Questions
What to bring?
Wear comfortable shoes for this walking tour. In spring and autumn, we recommend bringing a light jacket.
What if I have concerns about my mobility on this tour?
This tour involves a moderate amount of walking and many old stone floors and stairways. If you have any doubts about your mobility, we suggest taking a Catacombs Private Tour so your needs can be better accommodated.
Which catacombs does this tour visit?
This tour usually visits the Priscilla Catacombs, but if there are any unexpected closures, your guide will take you to another nearby site.
Will we see bones?
Yes! This tour visits the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione which houses a 17th-century ossuary under it. There you will see the bones of around 4,000 Capuchin friars!
Why do I have to pay for my child who is under 6 years old?
Since this trip includes transportation, all passengers on the tour must be seated for safety and legal reasons. That means a young child takes up the same space as a youth or adult. For peace of mind, we can bring a car seat for children who need one, so please let us know in the comment box on the order confirmation page.
Is there a dress code to enter the religious sites on this tour?
We ask both men and women to cover knees and shoulders, otherwise you may be refused entry to religious sites and miss out on a portion of your tour. We understand the summers in Rome can be hot, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way, you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.
Does this tour include hotel pickup?
No hotel pickup is included on this tour. You’ll meet your guide at the designated meeting point.
Where does this tour end?
After visiting the catacombs and crypts, your driver will return you to central Rome at Piazza Barberini where your tour started.
What if I want to see the catacombs during the day?
No problem! You can book onto our daytime option Rome Catacombs Tour .

Rated 5 stars!
Visiting the Colosseum at night is really special, not only because of how beautiful it is from the outside (which you can of course see regardless.)
When you first go in, you will see and really appreciate the architecture of the corridors , because they are totally empty!
Then, as you go around on the main level of the Colosseum, your first impression will be of the silence.
It's dark all around you and hardly anyone else is there, so you get to appreciate what you are looking at even more, because there is no sound, other than the guide, to distract you.
On a night visit to the Colosseum, you will visit the main and second levels of the Colosseum, which you can do also during the day.
But you will also get to go out onto the Colosseum arena floor . . .
. . . and, you will visit the Hypogeum below .
This is another thing that makes this visit so special, as these areas are not accessible with a regular daytime entry ticket, and booking a visit of them (along with the third ring above), can be hard to come by as there is limited number of tickets to those areas.
You will NOT see the 3rd or 4th/5th rings on the Colosseum night tour.
They are simply off limits at that time (and at this time, they are closed in any case.)
Is the Colosseum night tour included in the Roma Pass?
The Roma Pass allows you free (or discounted) entry to the Colosseum / Roman Forum / Palatine Hill , but only during regular daytime hours .
The Colosseum night tour is considered a special event, and is not offered at any discount or with the Roma Pass or any other Combo pass .
How much does it cost to visit the Colosseum by night? Any reductions?
The full-fare ticket to visit the Colosseum by night, which includes a tour in English (or Spanish or Italian), is 25€.
There is no additional booking fee so that is the final price per person.
For anyone under 25, the reduced fee is 20€.
For ages 3-6, it's free, but you still need a ticket (it's a free ticket but you have to reserve as it's consider a "spot" on the tour.)
Reminder: A ll Colosseum tickets will be nominative. This means that your ticket will have your name on it, and you’ll have to show ID to prove you are the person whose name is on the ticket.
Is it the same as the day ticket, including the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill?
No, it's not the same.
A normal day-time visit to the Colosseum costs 16€ if purchased on site, or a bit more if you pre-purchase .
And it includes a visit to the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill area over a 24-hour period.
Any other kind of visit to the Colosseum, such as underground , to upper tiers, and, the subject of this page, visiting the Colosseum by night, is considered a special event .
(It's also why they are not always available.)
Colosseum night tickets must be purchased in advance , and always include a tour with someone from the staff of CoopCulture.
You cannot wander in on your own, and you cannot just walk up and purchase a ticket .
For all these special events, there is a limited number of spaces available, and as they are popular, they tend to sell out fast so you really have to book in advance , sometimes long in advance.
Is it better to see the Colosseum at night or during the day?
These are two really different visits, and different ways to see the Colosseum.
Visiting the Colosseum by day - pros and cons
Here are the pros of visiting the Colosseum by day :
- You can visit on your own, without a guide (although I personally think it's ideal to visit the Colosseum with a tour guide so you get the history and all the fun Colosseum facts !)
- You have a large choice of times to go during the day's opening hours and can spend as much time as you like inside.
- Going by day means you also have included in the ticket, a visit to the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill (it's two parks but considered one because you can walk between them.)
- And you have 2 consecutive days to do it (although there is no re-entry, so each site can be visited once in that 48-hour period.) That is a lot of flexibility, and a lot to see.
Here are the cons of visiting the Colosseum by day :
- The crowds and noise level are pretty distracting.
- In a normal daytime visit, you cannot visit the arena floor or the underground unless you book a Full Experience ticket or tour.
- Did I mention the crowds?
Visiting the Colosseum by night - pros and cons
Here are the pros of visiting the Colosseum by night :
- It's absolutely stunning to see this monument, inside and out, lit up this way.
- You will have the Colosseum almost entirely to yourselves (there may be just a couple of other tour groups in there and they stagger the visits, so you mostly feel like your group is the only in there.)
- You get to go out onto the arena floor , and again, as you are nearly alone, this is a unique and special experience. I could not stop looking around me with my mouth gaping open.
- You get to visit the Hypogeum (underground) , and as you are in the dark (but with lights of course), it's even more realistic, since that is how the gladiators saw it back then. Just dark.
- You will have a lot of time to just take in what you are looking at, PLUS take photos and videos . You will really get the full immersion without the distraction of hordes of people and lots of noise.
Here are the cons of visiting the Colosseum by night :
- It costs more than visiting during the day.
- You can ONLY see the Colosseum , but not the Roman Forum or Palatine Hill .
- It sells out long in advance so can be hard to book.
All about the Rome Colosseum
So which one should you do?
If you have never been to Rome before, you may want to do the daytime visit so you can also see the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill .
And take a tour of that so you get all the history and info.
And, if you've been to the Colosseum before, or if you have time on your trip to Rome, add a night visit.
You will never look at the Colosseum the same way again.
When is the Colosseum open at night?
When they started offering Colosseum night visits, it was only available during spring / summer / fall .
As of this writing in late 2023, visits seem to begin in early spring and go through the New Year Holidays .
As the season slows down and it gets colder, there are fewer of them.
In winter months, you can often only go on the weekends, but this seems to differ from one year to the next, and I think they adjust it according to whatever the current supply/demand is.
Also note it is NOT available on the Free Sunday or other free dates (on the first Sunday of each month, and some other dates during the year , like November 4 and April 21 , many sites and museums are free for everyone, and there are no special visits that day.)
As for what time they go, they start having visits about an hour after the regular closing time, and stagger the entry times.
So for example, in July, when the Colosseum closes at 7pm, they start visits sometime after 8pm, but you might get an entry time of say, 9:40pm.
This way it's always in the dark , and as they stagger the entry times, you will not spend much time together with any other tour groups.
The perfect 3-day itinerary in Rome
Trying to figure out how to organize your visit to Rome? I've got the perfect 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors (or those who have not been here in a while.) It works for a 2.5 day visit as well.
In my 3-day itinerary, you'll see all the major must-see Rome attractions like the Vatican , Colosseum , Trevi Fountain , Pantheon , Piazza Navona , Spanish Steps , Castel Sant'Angelo , and much more.
And if you have more time, or want suggestions for extra/other things to do, you'll find that there too.
Visit my page with the best 3-day itinerary in Rome for first-timers .
Do you have to take a tour? How long does it last?
Yes, to visit the Colosseum by night, you must take a tour .
And the tour has to be with someone from CoopCulture, the organization that manages the Colosseum and its ticket sales.
When you book a tour with an outside company, you will still get the guide you booked, who works for that company.
But when you enter for the Colosseum night tour , someone from CoopCulture just comes along, in part to make sure you keep to your time-table.
But rest assured, you will have the tour guide you booked.
A Colosseum night tour booked through CoopCulture lasts just over an hour.
A tour with an outside company will likely last longer, as they usually try to cover some more ground and information, to make it a more complete tour.
For example, your guide might set a meeting point at Piazza Venezia, and then give you a tour of that piazza and the via dei Fori Imperiali on your way to the Colosseum.
The length will depend on the tour company but usually it will be around 2 - 2.5 hours.
How do you book a Colosseum night tour?
There are two ways to book a tour of the Colosseum by night, through CoopCulture , or through a private tour company .
If you book through CoopCulture, it will cost less, but if you want a more complete tour, or, if you find CoopCulture tickets sold out, you may want to try booking a tour with an outside company.
Book a tour of the Colosseum by night through CoopCulture
CoopCulture is the entity that runs the ticketing for the Colosseum (and other sites in Rome and throughout Italy.)
You can book your Colosseum night tour directly through Coopculture, online.
The 25€ ticket you buy for the Colosseum night visit through CoopCulture is a ticket for entry and includes the guide in the language you choose.
Ready to plan your trip?
Book a tour of the Colosseum by night with a tour company
If you want a more complete tour, that includes other parts of Ancient Rome by night, you may want to consider booking a Colosseum night tour through a tour agency .
On a recent tour, w e began at the Vittoriano monument (the "wedding cake"), and walked from there to Campidoglio for some night Roman Forum views.
Take Walks is another trusted partner - book your tour here.
While we walked along the via dei Fori Imperiali, all lit up, we were treated to a fun and entertaining history lesson about Ancient Rome and some colorful emperors.
Once we arrived at the Colosseum, our guide handled everything and in we went (you do have to pass through security so I remind you, no selfie sticks or tripods allowed .)
We had the place nearly to ourselves.
A guide from the Colosseum joined our group, but mostly served to keep us on track time-wise.
Our guide was the one who guided us the whole time, and it was fantastic.
You may also wish to book a Colosseum night tour on GetYourGuide because it's hard to book and because space is so limited.
When you go on a tour booking site like these, you can enter your date(s) and see WHO has a tour available then.
Yes, booking a tour with an agency is more expensive than with CoopCulture.
But you will have a more complete tour this way.
And, if the tickets through CoopCulture are sold out, you may find that by booking a tour, you can find space available.

What to Do in Rome at Night: 14 Exciting Ideas
Filling your days in Rome is a beyond easy task: the list of bucket-list-worthy experiences in Rome is a mile long, and it’s truly impossible to be bored in the city. Trying to decide what to do in Rome at night, though, is a bit trickier.
Deciding where to go, what to do, and even figuring out what options are available in the evening often requires a bit of research–but don’t worry.
From laid-back neighborhood explorations to delightful dinners to iconic tourism experiences (did you know you can tour the Colosseum at night?!), there are some truly incredible things to do in Rome at night.
Some links in this post may be affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of these links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Please see our disclosure policy for more detail.
What to Do in Rome at Night
Throw a coin in the trevi fountain..
Rome’s Trevi Fountain is rightfully famous, but during the day, it is often so packed with crowds that it can be hard to enjoy.
Tossing the traditional coin in the Trevi Fountain to ensure you come back to Rome often involves a long dance of nudging your way to the front of the crowd–hardly the experience most of us dream about having at the Trevi Fountain.
In the dead of night, though, you’ll find the Trevi Fountain deserted!
Experiencing such a beautiful masterpiece alone is a truly special experience.
Sure, your photos might look a little different than those who stop by during the day, but the memory is sure to be one worth cherishing.
Step inside the Colosseum.
Want to experience the Colosseum in a way that few visitors ever do?
Tour the Colosseum at night!
After the gates close to most visitors, you can still purchase a specialized tour to see the Colosseum under the night sky: no crowds. No heat.
Just you and the weight of history.
This is one of our favorite things that we’ve ever done in Rome, and we can highly recommend it!
Book your visit to the Colosseum at night today!
Enjoy the nightlife in Trastevere.
If you’re looking for a place to enjoy the nightlife in Rome that is both beautiful and reasonably accessible to tourists, Trastevere is the perfect spot.
T his neighborhood comes alive at night, with bars and restaurants on nearly every corner.
If you’re looking for an even more local feel, you might also want to look into the neighborhoods of Testaccio and Pigneto when deciding what to do in Rome at night.
Explore Vatican City after the crowds have gone home.
Like the Colosseum, with a little advance planning, it is possible to add touring the Vatican Museums to your list of what to do in Rome at night!
If you’re hoping to experience the magic of the Sistine Chapel without literally standing shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of your new closest friends, plan a Friday evening excursion to the Vatican!
We recently took this epic tour of the Vatican Museums at night and loved the experience!
The small group size, less-crowded spaces (though to be clear: some crowds were definitely still present, especially in the more popular rooms), excellent tour guide, and slight mystique of wandering through the incredible collections with a crisp evening breeze floating through the open windows made for an incredible experience.
The museums are only open at night on Fridays from April-October, so they’re far from deserted–but the crowds are much thinner than during the day, and overall we had a much more pleasant experience.
Book the same Vatican Museums tour we loved today! Prefer to explore independently? You can also book individual tickets to experience the Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel at night !
Check out a rooftop bar.
What better way to enjoy a glass of prosecco or a classic spritz in Rome than by sipping it at a beautiful rooftop bar?
Rooftop bars in Rome, especially on warm summer nights with a sunset, are the perfect way to start an evening in Rome.
A few popular choices include the rooftop bars at Hotel Minerva and at Hotel Raphael, but there are incredible rooftop bars all over Rome!
Substitute a delicious food tour for a traditional dinner.
Don’t want to sit down for a traditional dinner?
Add a food tour to your list of what to do in Rome at night!
Food tours are one of our favorite ways to explore a city, and Rome is certainly no exception.
On a food tour, you can taste many new dishes fast (without committing to an entire portion), find great restaurants, learn the names of and how to order all your new favorite foods, and with a good guide, learn about the neighborhood you’re exploring as well.
Consider taking a tasty, evening food tour through Trastevere .
If you’d rather hop across the Tiber and explore a different neighborhood, this food tour through the Jewish ghetto and Campo de’ Fiori gets great reviews as well.
Book your delicious Rome food tour today!
See a show at the stunning Teatro dell’Opera.
Want to get all dressed up and enjoy a unique night out in Rome?
Head to the opera!
Sure, you won’t understand much of what’s going on if you don’t speak Italian.
… B ut by attending an opera in Rome you will get the chance to participate in an exciting cultural experience, see a side of Rome that few tourists do, and admire the interior of the stunning Teatro dell’Opera while experiencing beautiful music.
Admire the Spanish Steps… possibly alone!
Similar to the experience you might have during the day at the Trevi Fountain, the crowds on the Spanish Steps during the day are notoriously large .
Especially during the summer, it can be difficult to even see the steps at all underneath the sea of tourists that stack themselves on the steps like they’re attending a sports event.
There’s no shame in that–we’ve definitely been part of that crowd more than once–but if you imagine yourself strolling across the steps without a soul in sight, add the Spanish Steps to your list of what to do in Rome at night.
In the mood for a spooky experience? Tour Rome’s catacombs at night.
Rome’s many catacombs are fascinating at any time of day, but at night, without crowds and under the cover of darkness, the atmosphere becomes just a bit spookier.
This tour will take you not only to the catacombs of Santa Priscilla at night but also to the bizarre and fascinating ossuary that is the Capuchin Crypt, which is, hands down, one of the most bizarre and unforgettable sights we have ever seen.
If bones and ghosts don’t scare you off, definitely add this to your list of what to do in Rome at night!
Book your nighttime catacomb tour now!
Learn about Rome’s darker legends on a ghost tour.
Catacombs and crypts not enough spookiness in Rome for you? Take in some of Rome’s darkest legends on a dark heart of Rome tour !
Not only will this give you a chance to explore parts of the city at night that you may have overlooked during the day, you’ll get to experience a completely different take on Rome’s history than you would get on a standard daytime walking tour.
Explore Rome’s spooky and supernatural elements with this affordable walking tour !
Enjoy dinner like a Roman.
Dinners in Rome are long and slow, ideally starting around 9:00pm and lasting for at least a couple of hours.
Pick a great restaurant (you may want to make reservations a couple of days ahead of time if you have a popular spot in mind), take leisurely breaks between courses, enjoy plenty of conversation and wine, and eventually waddle your way out of the restaurant more stuffed than you’ve ever been.
True, this isn’t something you’ll want to do every day–but at least once during your trip, it’s an experience worth having in Rome at night.
Take part in the tradition of aperitivo .
Why are Romans able to wait to eat dinner at 9:00 PM when our stomachs are growling much earlier (leading to the occasional Rome travel mistake of a visitor attempting to visit a closed restaurant)?
Because of aperitivo !
Though aperitivo is typically a northern Italian tradition, it has spread south and you can now find aperitivo all over Rome
Essentially, aperitivo is a set time–generally between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM–where you can buy a drink at a bar that also comes with a snack.
The snack can range wildly, from a bit of bruschetta all the way up to access to a buffet serving things like meats and cheeses, and it’ll definitely help you stay full until dinnertime.
Take a nighttime stroll through Centro Storico.
One of our absolute favorite times to wander through Centro Storico is at night when the tourists are all at dinner or home, the streets are empty, and the city feels like magic.
This is Rome’s most central neighborhood, and it is generally quite safe.
It’s also where you can find many of Rome’s highlights, including Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps–and all of these locations are even more stunning when you have them to yourself.
Attend a movie at an open-air cinema.
If you’re looking for something to do in Rome at night that is focused less on tourism and more on enjoying the city like a local, go see a movie!
On summer nights, many spots in Rome transform into open-air cinemas .
O ccasionally you can even find films being shown in English, as some of the cinemas show movies in their original language with Italian subtitles.
And speaking of summer nights in Rome–if you happen to be visiting Rome in the summer, be sure to add the Lungo il Tevere to your list of things to do in Rome at night as well!
Tips for Exploring Rome at Night
Pay attention to the metro hours.
Rome’s metro service ends fairly early for a major city, at 11:30 PM on weekdays and 1:30 AM on weekends.
If you’re planning a late night, consider taking alternate transportation home!
You can check updated metro hours and prices here .
Rome is generally a safe city, but take usual precautions.
Though Rome is generally quite safe and we regularly go out at night with no concerns, you’ll still want to take all the normal safety precautions that you would in any major city.
B e aware of your surroundings, stick to populated, well-lit areas, don’t get overly intoxicated, and ensure you have a safe route home.
Don’t expect to eat dinner at 6:00 PM.
The best restaurants tend to open for dinner between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM.
You’ll find a handful open at 7:00 PM, but 6:00 PM? Everyone is still at aperitivo !
Don’t be afraid to make reservations.
Rome’s best restaurants fill up fast, and reservations are common.
Add that to late opening hours and leisurely dining times, and if you head to a popular restaurant without a plan, you’re more likely to hear, “sorry, we’re full, try again tomorrow” than “it’s an hour wait”.
If you have a particular restaurant in mind that you want to experience in Rome, don’t be afraid to make reservations!
Many popular spots allow you to make reservations online.
Alternatively, you can call to make a reservation (or have your hotel call for you).

I've been a tour guide in Rome for 16 years. Here are 9 of the biggest mistakes tourists make.
- Tourists visiting Rome often make mistakes that detract from their experience in the city.
- I've worked as a tour guide here for 16 years, and many people forget to plan their trip in advance.
- Disregarding dress codes, ignoring local customs, and booking short trips can also be mistakes.
My husband and I have 25 and 16 years, respectively, of guiding experience in Rome. He's a licensed guide who leads cultural, archeological, and art tours, and I am a certified sommelier who leads food and wine tours.
When visiting Rome , tourists often make several common mistakes that can detract from their experience in the Eternal City — ranging from simple cultural misunderstandings to more serious breaches of etiquette.
My husband and I often discuss some of the more frustrating things we wish guests knew before they visited. Here are the top mistakes we've seen.
Disregarding dress codes
Tourists often fail to adhere to dress codes when visiting religious sites, such as St. Peter's Basilica or the Sistine Chapel.
Wearing revealing clothing can be seen as disrespectful in these sacred spaces, so make sure to look up guidelines beforehand.
Typically, at least the knees and shoulders must be covered.
Ignoring local customs
Many visitors overlook the importance of local customs , such as greeting people with a polite "Buongiorno" in the morning and "Buonasera" in the evening.
Small gestures like this can go a long way in showing respect for Roman culture.
Not tipping their servers
Tipping is less customary in Italy than in some other countries, and it's not expected or mandatory. But leaving a few euros per person on top of the bill is considered polite in Rome.
I don't know why so many guidebooks and articles state that the
"coperto" is a service charge that goes to the server. This is untrue — it covers things like the bread, olive oil, and vinegar for the restaurant.
But if you see the word "servizio" on the receipt, that money goes to the server.
Booking too short of a trip
Rome is more than just the Colosseum, Sistine Chapel, and Trevi Fountain — it deserves time. It's the Eternal City with over 2 millennia of history to get through, after all.
Confining yourself to the most heavily touristed areas usually means missing out on some authentic local experiences off the beaten path.
Many tourists are only in Rome for two or three days, which doesn't give them much time to visit lesser-known sites like Ostia Antia or contemporary museums like Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna.
As we say in Rome, "Roma, non basta una vita" ("In Rome, a lifetime is not enough"). I know people's holidays are limited, but instead of trying to visit four Italian cities in a week , maybe slow down and give Rome at least five days.
Relying solely on English
English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but learning some basic Italian phrases or using a translation app can significantly enhance your interactions with locals.
It's also a way to demonstrate respect for the host culture.
Not planning ahead
Visitors often need to pay more attention to the time and effort required to visit Rome's most popular attractions if they want to avoid long lines and frustration.
Tours of the Colosseum or Vatican often sell out months in advance.
One of my favorite websites for up-to-date advice for travelers planning trips to Rome is Rome Wise . You can find information on anything from the best cocktail bars and hotels to art exhibits and even general helpful information.
Visiting at the wrong time
If you're deciding when to come, most guidebooks and travel sites advise people to skip Rome in August.
But I think July is more unbearably hot and crowded — August is much cooler. Since more Italian people tend to be on holiday in August, it can also be less crowded.
Disrespecting art and architecture
Tourists occasionally disregard the rules against touching artwork, leaning on ancient structures, or sitting on historic fountains, which can damage these important cultural treasures.
You don't want to end up on the local news as a tourist who took a piece of marble from the Roman Forum or left graffiti on the Colosseum.
Missing out on the local cuisine
Tourists often stick to familiar dishes or opt for restaurants in high-traffic areas — missing out on the incredible diversity of Roman cuisine and the charm of neighborhood trattorias (small restaurants).
Italian food is seasonal. Rome might be famous for artichokes, but if you're eating them in June, they probably aren't local (the vegetable is only in season from February until April).
I recommend following advice from the local food experts at Casa Mia . They have excellent information on seasonal cuisine, and they offer food and wine tours.
