However, expect this to be different from a petting zoo as Wolves are wild animals.

You can stand a few feet away from these breathtaking animals, with fences in between for your safety.

Here, families can take guided tours to learn about the wolves’ history, behavior, and conservation. The experience would be great for ages 8 and up. Apart from wolf tours, there is food, music, and other entertainment to provide a fun experience for families to bond with their kids!

Pittsburgh Zoo 

The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is a lovely place to spend time together! Kids will have a blast seeing all the animals.

The zoo is beautifully landscaped and well-maintained, and the animals seem happy and healthy. You’ll find clear maps and informative signs throughout.

Independence National Historical Park

Independence National Historical Park is a National Historic Landmark in Philadelphia that protects and preserves a dozen sites and green spaces. This is a great place to teach kids about American History in a fun way.

Kids can even become an  Independence Junior Ranger  and earn a certificate if they’re up for the challenge.

This is also where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were signed. 

Kids also enjoy seeing the large bells. The Liberty Bell is one of the free things to see. Admission is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. 

The Centennial Bell rings every hour inside Independence Hall. 

Franklin Institute 

The Franklin Institute is a science museum in Philadelphia, and you’ll definitely want to take the kids here! With kids, the museum will take up most of the day as there is so much to see and do.

This isn’t just any old science museum, though. They have live shows and lots of hands-on exhibits.

The shows are fun even for the littlest ones, who will be fully engaged and laughing.

Did you know? The Franklink Institute is where you’ll find the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial

It’s really a great way to teach kids about science in a super fun way. Make sure to pay attention to the live show schedule and then explore the hands-on exhibits in between.

4. Get Interactive at the Please Touch Museum

The Please Touch Museum is the place for kids to play, and imagine. With dozens of interactive exhibits, like a fairytale indoor garden or river play experience, this museum will keep the kids busy for hours. It is best for kids 8 and under, but there’s no hard age limit.

Good To Know:  The museum’s First Wednesdays program keeps the museum open for extra hours (4-7 PM), and admission to these evening programs is $2.

5. Visit Daniel the Tiger at Idlewild & Soakzone

This amusement park has both rides and a water park all in one. Its roller coaster is great for older kids, while the  Daniel the Tiger Neighborhood  will be the little ones’ favorite spot.

Good To Know:  There are some great climbing structures and playgrounds to take a break from the rest.

6. Take a Kid’s Cruise in Pittsburgh

13. Take a Train that Goes Back In Time

The East Broad Top Railroad is America’s oldest operating narrow-gauge railroad and the only surviving railroad of its type east of the Rocky Mountains. You and your family can enjoy a leisurely train ride through the heart of central Pennsylvania. Excursions take passengers on a scenic 1 hour roundtrip through rolling hills, farms and forests.

Keep in mind that reservations or advance tickets may be needed for some of these attractions suggested for day trips with kids near Pennsylvania. Always check the attraction’s website for current policies, hours, and ticket information.

Philadelphia Day Trip

There’s so much to experience in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. Some ideas for fun activities in the city include the Franklin Institute and viewing the Liberty Bell. There’s also Fairmont Park with the Please Touch Museum and Smith Playground.

A bit further outside the city is Legoland Discovery Center Philadelphia . This is a LEGO-themed play place with a cute, interactive train that takes you into the Discovery Center. In the general Philadelphia area, there’s also Sesame Place . Sesame Place is focused on younger children and has many dry rides and water rides along with two, family-friendly roller coasters.

Kilgore Falls Day Trip

Kilgore Falls is located in Rocks State Park, which is just over the Pennsylvania border in Maryland. During summer weekends and holidays, it’s essential to reserve a parking spot that is adjacent to the trailhead for the falls. The parking lot is small, and park rangers oversee the entry into the parking lot during summer weekends and holidays.

Each parking reservation allows you to park and enjoy Kilgore Falls for a few hours. It’s a good idea to bring water shoes, as the rocks around the waterfall can be slippery.

Harrisburg Day Trip

The capitol city of Pennsylvania has a lot of fun options for day trips. There’s city island which features a baseball stadium, train, and the Susquehanna Pride riverboat.

In the city, the Pennsylvania State Museum is a good option for history buffs, while it also has an area that caters to kids. There’s the Whitaker Center with Kids Place and many other kid-oriented exhibits.

Allentown Day Trip

Allentown is home to Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. In addition to this massive amusement park, there’s also the Da Vinci Science Center .

Nearby, the Crayola Experience in Easton, which is close to Allentown, is fun for the younger bunch.

Ricketts Glen Day Trip

Ricketts Glen is a state park located in northern Pennsylvania. This beautiful park has a waterfall trail that features over two dozen waterfalls. This hike is good for older children, around ages 8 or older who are used to longer hikes. There’s a lot of stairs and hills, but a ton of amazing places to explore.

After the over four mile hike, relax on the park’s sandy lake beach of Lake Jean. There are restrooms and a changing area at the beach. Be sure to bring a picnic meal and some inner tubes for some added fun.

Lancaster Day Trip

Lancaster has so many fun places to visit, it will be difficult to list all of them in this short description. First, there’s Tiny Town , a small indoor village for kids.

Of course, Dutch Wonderland , an amusement park catering to young children, is a favorite with kids ages 2 to 10. Next, check out all of the train-related fun with a trip to Strasburg Rail Road and the Choo Choo Barn.

Don’t forget that Cherry Crest Adventure Farm is located close to Strasburg Rail Road. The farm features so many activities, it could be a day trip by itself. There are over 20 fun activities for kids in Lancaster .

Seaside Heights Day Trip

Seaside Heights is a bit of a drive from Pennsylvania, but it is possible to do as a day trip (we’ve done it several times). The beach town features Casino Pier and Breakwater Beach .

This pier is filled with amusement rides, while the water park, Breakwater Beach, is located on the next block over from the pier. This is the home of an amazingly long chair lift with beautiful views of the ocean. Of course, it’s also fun to play on the beach.

Ohiopyle Day Trip

Ohiopyle is a state park located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania, in the general Pittsburgh region. The park boasts amazing white water rafting, but is also known for a short hike to Cucumber Falls and natural water slides. Also in the area is Seven Springs Resort , which features skiing in the winter and a fun alpine sled run in the summer.

Reading Day Trip

Reading is an interesting day trip destination for kids. There’s the Pagoda that overlooks the city of Reading, an interesting and educational place to visit in the city. Also, nearby is The Works at Wyomissing, a place with go-karts, an arcade, and play place for kids.

Hershey Day Trip

Hershey is known as the sweetest place on earth. Even the streetlights in downtown Hershey are shaped like kisses.

Hersheypark is the highlight of a Hershey day trip, but there’s also plenty more to do in the Hershey area. Check out Indian Echo Caverns , ZooAmerica , The Hershey Story museum, and Hershey Gardens. A bit up the road is Lake Tobias , a popular animal safari and walk-thru zoo.

Chambersburg Day Trip

Chambersburg is the county seat of Franklin County. Though it’s a comparatively small town, there are some fun and unique activities nearby. This includes Chambersburg Aquatic Center , with its water slides, lazy river, and miniature golf course.

Beside the aquatic center is Chambersburg Memorial Park . This park features a unique toddler playground. Also worth checking out in the area is Norlo Park that features miniature train rides and Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium . While Chambersburg is a small town, there are quite a few fun day trips for kids in the area.

Baltimore Day Trip

Baltimore Inner Harbor is a fun place to walk around with the kids, and that area is also home to Port Discovery Children’s Museum .

More main attractions grace the harbor such as the National Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center. Both are fun visits for elementary-age children. There’s plenty do in the Inner Harbor as one of the day trips with kids near Pennsylvania.

Central New Jersey Day Trip

Diggerland , a construction-themed amusement park is a highlight of a central New Jersey trip for kids. Next door to Diggerland is Sahara Sam’s, an indoor waterpark.

Poconos Day Trip

The Poconos are known for their indoor water parks and skiing. However, the area can still be a good choice for a day trip either in the summer or winter. In the summer, Camelback Mountain is home to a water park, Camelbeach . There’s also Camelback Mountain Adventures which has thrilling zip lines and a mountain coaster. In the winter, Camelback features a giant tubing hill.

Strasburg Day Trip

Strasburg Rail Road offers short excursions on their train, as well as special events such as Thomas’ Day Out. If you take a train ride, you’ll pass Cherry Crest Adventure Farm , which has tons of fun activities for children.

Cherry Crest is also home to Sproutsville, a kid-sized village. Unique lodging in the area is the Red Caboose, which has hotel rooms in train cars and a restaurant made from a train.

The Franklin Institute

Adventure Aquarium

Two million gallons of water and 15,000 aquatic animals can’t help but impress. Sesame Place

Elmwood park zoo.

Opened in 1924, the 16-acre Elmwood Park Zoo showcases an animal collection of more than 100 species indigenous to the Americas, as well as African fruit bats and Asian red pandas. Many of the animals — the American bison, peregrine falcon, bald eagle, red panda and American alligator — represent significant wildlife conservation success stories. The zoo also includes a spacious playground featuring interactive animal sculptures.

Linvilla Orchards

Parents can enjoy a beer or cocktail and live entertainment at the on-site Stone’s Throw pub. Come wintertime, don’t miss the Holiday Light Show Drive Through Experience with millions of lights illuminating acres of farmland and bonfire with hot cocoa and s’mores for purchase.

Independence Blue Cross RiverRink brings ice skating in the winter ( Winterfest ) and roller skating in the summer ( Summerfest ) to the Delaware River waterfront. Wintertime features special pop-up fire pits, indoor games, cozy couches and hot drinks while summer brings air conditioning, rocking chairs on a wrap-around porch, cool drinks, carnival rides (including a 60-foot Ferris wheel!) and games for the whole family.

Offering parents the best of both worlds, the indoor-outdoor open-concept Craft Hall features a stellar menu of barbecue and pub grub, a selection of craft beers for the grownups, and plenty to keep the little ones happy. With Mainstay Independent Brewing Company located inside, the space — named a Best of Philly Bar for Parents — is explicitly family-friendly until 9 p.m. each day (when all patrons must be 21-plus.) While adults sip and mingle, kids can play in an indoor, pirate-themed playground or game room with Nintendo, shuffleboard, skeeball and more. There’s even a beer garden/dog park for the furry kiddos.

Dilworth Park

City Hall’s fantastic front yard has a retro-themed roller rink and tree-lined fountains (splashing encouraged) in warm weather, and an ice-skating rink with a ski chalet vibe in winter. Dilworth Park ’s year-round pop-up concerts, fitness events, festivals, a cozy cafe and great access to public transit have activated the very center of Center City.

Giggleberry Fair at Peddler's Village

Bucks County’s all-in-one play-shop-and-dine destination Peddler’s Village treats kids to Giggleberry Fair , a carnival-style family fun center with a restored 1922 Philadelphia Toboggan Company Grand Carousel; Giggleberry Mountain , the area’s largest indoor obstacle course; Giggles Discovers , an interactive exploration environment; and the Game Room .

Sister Cities Park

Water-loving kiddos and their families frequent Sister Cities Park , a  warm-day paradise with a pebble-bottom wading pool sheltered by a landscaped hill, along with 10 spouting fountains. The park boasts kid-friendly programming from top museums and attractions, the nature-in-the-city Children’s Discovery Garden , a cafe, and a kiosk selling plastic boats, swim diapers, sunscreen and other essentials during the summer months.

Smith Memorial Playground

One of the oldest playgrounds in America, Smith Memorial Playground is best known for the circa-1899 Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide which, at over 60 feet in length, 12 feet in width and 10 feet high, can accommodate a dozen kids at a time. Beyond the iconic slide, the attraction offers children (ages 10 and under) a free, safe place to play, jump, swing, climb and learn about nature. For children 5 and under, Tot-Lot features more than 20 pieces of age-appropriate play equipment.

Spruce Street Harbor Park

Open spring, summer and fall

Lauded as one of the best urban beaches in the world by Jetsetter , Spruce Street Harbor Park is an outdoor oasis on the Delaware River waterfront. With tree-slung hammocks, cargo container arcades and concessions, giant board games, bocce, weekend craft markets, misting palm trees and planted barges (with bars for the grownups), the park has become a warm-weather must-do.

TreeTop Quest Philly

The 20-zipline TreeTop Quest Philly are designed for ages 6 and up. Open May through November, the self-guided, two-and-a-half-hour course includes 60 obstacles — swings, jumps, tightropes — across four levels of courses of varying degrees of difficulty.

Kids Castle Central Park

Spread out over 30,000 square feet in Doylestown ’s largest park, the Kids Castle Central Park playground is a year-’round outdoor adventureland for kids 5-12 stretching across four “kingdoms” with treehouses, plastic rock walls, a kid-sized pirate ship and dozens of next-level playground rides and interactive games. The centerpiece of the 100-acre park is the Kids Castle itself, a massive eight-story wooden play structure with labyrinthine passages, drawbridges, overlooks, twisty tube slides and kids’ elevator, protected by a giant friendly plastic dragon.

Treehouse World Adventure Park

Kids of all ages can live out their backyard tree fort dreams at Treehouse World Adventure Park in West Chester (directly west of Philly’s Center City). The 14-acre compound features nearly a dozen massive themed treehouses — including a pirate ship, a six-car locomotive, an enchanted village and a giant birthday cake — along with two tiny tot-friendly ziplines (and an aerial zipline tour for kids 12-plus), a giant trampoline, a wooded obstacle course, a small animal farm, and opportunities for rock climbing, ax throwing and bungee jumping.

TreeTrails Adventures

If your family is always on the go, take a trip to Lower Southampton Township to visit zipline park TreeTrails Adventures . The park offers six aerial trails with more than 50 elements including bridges, netted tunnels and elevated swings. TreeTrails’ main courses are open to adults and kids ages 7 and up, from beginner ziplines 10 to 12 feet in the air to advanced zips over 50 feet high. There’s even a side-by-side 1,000-foot-long zipline racetrack and a KidsTrails spot for the younger set, with lines just two to three feet off the ground for kids ages 4 to 7. Experiences are two hours in length and include guided practice time.

The African American Museum in Philadelphia

Founded in 1976 (for the nation’s bicentennial), the groundbreaking African American Museum tells stories of notable early African Americans through the core exhibit, Audacious Freedom: African Americans in Philadelphia 1776-1876 . Other exhibits examine contemporary issues through art and historic artifacts. Special programs include Family Fun Days (hands-on activities and more every second Saturday) and family-friendly celebrations around Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth.

American Helicopter Museum & Education Center

More than 35 helicopters, autogiros and convertiplanes — some of which are fully accessible — fill this suburban aviation destination. Among the many things to do and see at the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center are a scale model room with over 400 replicas, the Girls in Science and Technology program (offered daily for girls aged 6-12) and the annual FamilyFest each June. Several times a year, guests of all ages have a chance to ride in a working helicopter.

Fireman's Hall Museum

Future emergency responders get a head start at the Fireman’s Hall Museum , a restored 1902 firehouse that’s home to some of the nation’s earliest firefighting equipment, including hand, steam and motor fire engines. Also on-site: a comic strip art-styled exhibit where kids can learn about fire prevention and try on firefighter gear and a gallery of 19th-century stove-top parade hats.

Independence Seaport Museum

On the edge of the Delaware River, little landlubbers can explore the Cruiser Olympia, which participated in the Spanish-American War, and World War II-era Submarine Becuna, both docked outside the Independence Seaport Museum (for an additional fee). National Constitution Center

A robust calendar of kid-friendly programming awaits at the Philadelphia Museum of Art , the crown jewel of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway . Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum

Dr. Fred Simeone’s impressive collection of racing sports cars — including machines from Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Aston Martin, Corvette and more — led to the creation of the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum , perfect for gearheads of all ages. The extensive collection features over 75 historic (and just plan cool) rides. Staff members regularly take cars from its collection outside for a spin during scheduled demonstration days.

Historical Attractions

Independence national historical park.

The Liberty Bell Center and Independence Hall are two of the 25-plus attractions that make up America’s most historic square mile in Independence National Historical Park . The National Park Service’s Junior Ranger program gives kids a chance to earn a special badge sticker and certificate during their visit by attending at least one ranger program and completing five activities in the Junior Ranger Activity Booklet. Interested families with kids 8 to 12 can pick up a booklet from the Independence Visitor Center on the day of their visit. Got the Ranger bug? Battleship New Jersey

Nautically inclined kids can visit the nation’s most decorated battleship, docked just across the Delaware River on the Camden waterfront. The Battleship New Jersey offers self-guided tours of its seven levels and half-century of service, with experts available to answer questions in the Captain’s Quarters and Combat Engagement Center. (Guided tours can also be scheduled.) Groups can spend a night aboard with on opportunity to fire saluting guns and sleep in sailor’s bunks during the award-winning Overnight Encampment program. Preschoolers can visit Jason’s Kids Kompartment, a safe play area with a kid-sized boat to captain, games, coloring books and more.

Betsy Ross House

At the Betsy Ross House , America’s most famous flag maker greets guests in her interactive 18th-century upholstery shop. Visitors learn about Betsy’s life, work and legend from the upholsterer herself. Tours are available either self-guided or with an audio guide, appropriate for kids as young as 6, offering lessons in colonial life and the opportunity to solve “history mysteries.”

Museum of Illusions

Offering a lighthearted break from the more serious historical sites in Old City and Philadelphia’s Historical District , the Museum of Illusions features a number of Instagrammable exhibits meant to trick the eye. Visitors to this good-for-the-whole-family spot typically spend about an hour among the installations and “Illusion Rooms,” interacting with the space’s holograms, stereograms and optical illusions, all the while learning about vision, perception and the human brain.

The Poconos is a fantastic destination for families who are looking to make a splash during winter, thanks to its numerous indoor waterparks! And most of them you can visit for just the day or an overnight stay.

Although Pennsylvania has several options, we loved visiting both Camelback’s Aquatopia and Great Wolf Lodge .

Great Wolf Lodge’s family-friendly waterpark offers a variety of thrilling water slides, a lazy river for relaxation, and even an interactive kids’ play area.

Meanwhile, Camelback’s Aquatopia takes the indoor waterpark experience to a whole new level with its themed water attractions, like Kartrite’s Quest and the Lost River.

2. Sesame Place

Location: Langhorne

Although  Sesame Place  is typically a summer destination, it is also fun to visit in the winter !

In December, Sesame Place offers its fun holiday event, A Very Furry Christmas. The park is open every Friday-Sunday and the whole week between Christmas and New Year.

In 2024, Sesame Place will be open the first weekend in January. They’ll stay closed for the remainder of January and then re-open weekends for limited hours starting mid-February. Not all their rides are open during these winter months, but they’ll still offer plenty of fun!

3. Hershey’s Chocolate World

Location: Hershey

We love visiting  Hershey’s Chocolate World ! It’s a fun stop anytime we’re in Hershey, whether to see  Hersheypark  or just enjoy the many  things to do in town . It’s a perfect addition to Hersheypark’s  Christmas Candylane  or just a fun day out in the middle of February.

There are so many fun things to do at Hershey’s Chocolate World, and you can spend an entire day there. We love the FREE chocolate factory ride, showing how Hershey’s makes delicious chocolate.

If you’re looking for more fun things to do, try making a custom chocolate bar or Reese’s cup. Or enjoy their brand new 4-D movie. Of course, you can spend a lot of time shopping at the largest Hershey’s store in the world!

We recommend combining your winter visit to Chocolate World with a stay at  Hershey’s Lodge . Hershey’s Waterworks, their indoor pool/waterpark, is so much fun and is a perfect place to chase the winter blues away!

4. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Location: Pittsburgh

  Phipps Conservatory  is perfect any time of year. It’s one of the best  things to do with kids in Pittsburgh ! However, when the winter chill sets in, it turns into a magical oasis of greenery and wonder.

Phipps Conservatory is the perfect place to visit during a Pennsylvania winter, thanks to the lush tropical gardens and exotic plants while wandering through the warm greenhouse.

In December, Phipps Conservatory hosts their Holiday Magic! Winter Flower Show and Light Garden. They also will have their Garden Railroad depicting scenes featuring all four seasons.

After exploring the gardens, bundle up to stroll around Schenley Park or visit their ice skating rink!

5. Longwood Gardens

Location: Kennett Square

Another beautiful garden to explore during winter in Pennsylvania is  Longwood Gardens . We love visiting during their  Christmas light display . But it’s also beautiful in January and February.

Although the outdoor gardens are dormant, Longwood Gardens is still fun for kids. They’ll love exploring the many treehouses on the property.

But the best part about visiting Longwood Gardens in winter is the huge conservatory. You can wander around and pretend you have traveled to a hot and humid location. Wear layers, as you’ll immediately take off that winter coat.

Kids will love this area, too! Inside the conservatory, they can explore the Children’s Garden, where they can enjoy secret tunnels, jumping water, and a smoke-breathing dragon.

6. Winter Ride On the Strasburg Railroad

Location: Ronks

Train rides are so fun! They are very popular during  fall  and  Christmastime , but there is something special about riding a train through a snow-covered landscape.

The  Strasburg Railroad  offers train rides throughout the year, including weekends during January and February. This is the perfect time to snuggle up together on the train while watching a winter wonderland roll by!

And with the  Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania  across the street, you can easily spend a full train-themed day together. Of course, there are even more fun  things to do in the Lancaster  region during the winter that you could plan a fun weekend getaway.

Although many people enjoy skiing as a fun winter activity in Pennsylvania, some of us would rather sit down while we glide down the mountain! Thankfully, there are plenty of places to go snow tubing in Pennsylvania.

On the eastern side of the state, snow tube lovers have several options, like  Camelback  in the Poconos (a perfect way to cap off a  day in their waterpark ) or  Blue Mountain , which is the largest snow tubing park in the country!

Head west to Pittsburgh’s  Seven Springs Mountain Resort  for high-speed tubing action or  Hidden Valley Resort , which boasts fantastic tubing lanes to enjoy the thrill of downhill tubing with friends and family.

Don’t forget to wear layers and waterproof clothing so you can stay warm while you’re outside in the cold !

8. Ice Skating Outdoors

There is something special about bundling up and strapping on some ice skates while you glide around outside. Even on the chilliest day, you’ll warm up quickly.

There are many options for skaters across the state, offering a mix of urban and natural settings. It’s the perfect activity for a winter day in Pennsylvania.

First, in Philadelphia, skaters have two options.  Dilworth Park ‘s Rothman Orthopaedics Ice Rink offers a picturesque setting for ice skating with City Hall as the backdrop.

Additionally, the  Blue Cross RiverRink  at Penn’s Landing gives skaters a gorgeous view of the Delaware River. Both rinks open for the holidays and stay open through February and they are fun winter activity in Philadelphia .

In the Poconos,  Skytop Lodge  provides a fun rink for both its guests and outside visitors. There is more to do at this family-friendly resort, so you might want to  book an overnight stay !

Ice skaters have options near Pittsburgh as well! The Schenley Park Skating Rink, nestled in the beautiful Schenley Park, is a popular spot for outdoor ice skating in Pittsburgh, providing a charming and natural atmosphere. It’s a perfect add-on to your time at the Phipps Conservatory.

Lastly, the Lodge at Nemacolin offers outdoor skating to its overnight guests and members.  Book a room  for a winter getaway and get in on the fun!

9. Visit a World Class Museum

Pennsylvania winters can vary from mild to downright freezing. And on those days when it is just too cold to be outside, it’s a perfect time to visit some of the best, world-class museums in the state.

In  Pittsburgh , the John Heinz History Center is a perfect option for families with kids young and old. The multi-level building has several interactive exhibits about the history of Pittsburgh that everyone will enjoy.

Kids will also love the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Science Center. The Natural History Museum is close to Phipps Conservatory and the ice skating at Schenley Park. You could plan a fun winter weekend getaway!

In Harrisburg, the State Museum of Pennsylvania is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the Keystone State. And in  Gettysburg , the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center has a fantastic museum and a 360-degree cyclorama.

10. Visit a Small Town in Pennsylvania

Winter is one of the best times to visit some of the  small towns in Pennsylvania . They are typically quieter than in the summer months but still offer all of the fun!

We mentioned visiting  Hershey’s Chocolate World  earlier, but Hershey itself is a perfect winter destination! In addition to Chocolate World, the Hershey Story Museum and the Hershey Gardens are  fun to visit in the winter . And the  Hershey Lodge  has a fabulous pool that’s practically a waterpark, so you’ll want to stay the night.

Jim Thorpe is another great small town to visit in the winter. Each year, they host their annual Winterfest in mid-February, with ice sculptures, magic shows, and horse and carriage rides through the town. You can also take a winter ride on the  Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway.

11. Explore a Cave

Pennsylvania is home several caves and many of them stay open through the winter. Exploring a cavern is the perfect winter activity in Pennsylvania, because the caves are usually warmer inside than it is outside! Caves stay about 52­­ °F year-round.

Not every cave in Pennsylvania is open in the winter. Penn’s Cave in Centre Hall is closed in January and re-opens in February. Lost River Caverns in Hellertown and Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown are open year-round. Lincoln Caverns in Huntingdon is open select days during the winter months. They have special events, like Batfest in February.

As parents, knowing how to entertain the entire family for the lowest possible out-of-pocket cost is critical to maintaining your sanity and a healthy bank account. As someone who spent their whole childhood and high school years living in Pennsylvania, I consider myself an expert in low-cost, family-friendly activities because my family was large, and we had no money. Take it from me: these are the places to bring the kids that won’t break the bank.

1. Spend a Day at Knoebels

As a kid, nothing was more exciting than being told you’re going to Knoebels. For those unaware, Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg is one of the last “old school” amusement parks. It opened in 1926 and is the United States’ largest free theme park. Yes, you read that correctly. Admission to Knoebels is free. Sure, you pay for rides carnival-style (a la carte). It’s a small price to pay for the opportunity to ride some of the country’s most rickety and terrifying wooden roller coasters.

2. Run the Steps Like Rocky

The front steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art are arguably the most famous in the country, thanks to the Rocky film franchise. If you’ve already exposed your family to the gloriousness of the movies (and why wouldn’t you, since you’re a great parent), running the steps like Rocky Balboa himself is a fun and free way to kill an hour in Philadelphia. At the very least, the physical exertion will tucker out the kids quickly.

3. See the Liberty Bell

Most families don’t have many chances to experience a piece of American history, so after you’re done running the art museum steps, make time to see the Liberty Bell in person. Located at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the kids will love the story behind the Liberty Bell’s crack, and admission is affordable for most families. I remember visiting the Liberty Bell on field trips and always viewed it as one of the coolest parts of my childhood.

4. Attend a Pirates Game

Forget about watching the Philadelphia Phillies. The best baseball team to watch in Pennsylvania is the Pittsburgh Pirates due to their incredible riverside stadium. PNC Park opened in 2001 and sits on the banks of the Allegheny River. One visit will make you a believer. Downtown Pittsburgh is the perfect backdrop for enjoying a baseball game. (If only the Pirates weren’t such a terrible Major League Baseball franchise.)

5. Take a History Lesson

Seeing the Liberty Bell up close is one way to experience our nation’s history, but traveling to Gettysburg National Military Park in  Gettysburg serves as a master class. Walking on the same fields that hosted one of the most significant and bloody battles of the American Civil War is an awe-inspiring experience that no family should pass up. No parent should miss the opportunity to educate their children on the importance of this hallowed ground.

6. Go to the Poconos

Growing up in eastern Pennsylvania, an annual family vacation to the Poconos was nearly guaranteed. From kitschy family resorts like Woodloch Pines to quiet cabin stays tucked away in the woods (and everything in between), a trip to the Poconos Mountains meant endless memories. The best part? This area of Pennsylvania is fantastic to visit year-round, regardless of the weather forecast.

7. Visit Bowman’s Tower

Located in Bucks County, just a short drive from Philadelphia, Bowman’s Tower is a jaw-dropping historic site. George Washington’s army used this tower as a lookout in the Revolutionary War. It’s still standing, and visitors can climb to the top of the structure for a small fee, where incredible panoramic views of the Philadelphia suburbs greet them. Bowman’s Tower is only a few miles from Washington’s Crossing State Park (another fun family destination).

8. Pose With the Rocky Statue

I may sound like a broken record, but I can’t overstate how important it is to introduce your children to the greatness that is Rocky. Just a few steps away from the iconic art museum steps is the famous statue of Rocky Balboa himself. Yes, Philadelphia erected a monument to a fictional character, but that’s all part of the charm. Bringing the family for a photo op with the statue is a rite of passage for countless parents. It also makes for a heck of an Instagram post.

9. Head to Splash Lagoon

Who doesn’t love going to an indoor water park? In case you were unaware, Splash Lagoon offers 80,000 square feet of water slides, wave pools, and lazy rivers, which is pretty much what kids’ dreams are made of. Although it’s a long drive if you’re on the other side of the state (it’s located in Erie, tucked away in the northwest corner of the state), many families say it’s worth every minute. In addition, Splash Lagoon is open year-round, making it accessible even during the snowy winters.

10. Be Amazed by Amish Country

I still can’t wrap my head around the Amish way of life. Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is home to thousands of people who live without electricity and ride in horse-drawn buggies and carriages. Visiting the town (and being mindful and respectful of the residents’ culture) is like traveling back in time. It’s worth the trip just to see the confused looks on your kids’ faces as they try to understand what they’re seeing. In addition, I maintain that the Amish make the best donuts in the world, so that’s another reason to head to Lancaster.

11. Visit the Ice Cream Mecca

When planning inexpensive, family-friendly activities, you can’t do much better than scheduling a trip to the Turkey Hill Experience in Colombia, Pennsylvania. Learning how ice cream is made is an eye-opening experience regardless of age (eclipsed only by eating the ice cream itself). Visiting Turkey Hill is an immersive experience. Think of it as a small-scale Disney World, and you’ll get the picture. If you really want to rock your family’s world, follow the visit with a trip to nearby Hershey to experience the chocolate-lovers paradise known as Hersheypark.

12. Visit Ringing Rocks Park

Tucked away in Upper Black Eddy, a suburb outside of Philadelphia, is Ringing Rocks Park. Spoiler alert: it’s exactly what it sounds like. Bring your hammers because this field of natural rocks will ring when struck with something. When my dad first took me there, I was stunned. I couldn’t believe these gigantic rocks started ringing when I bashed them with a hammer. The phenomenon is caused by abnormally high amounts of iron inside the stones. Don’t try to explain it to your kids. Just enjoy the park’s free admission and start ringing.

13. Explore the Benjamin Franklin Museum

One field trip from when I was a kid has always stuck out: my class trip to the Ben Franklin Museum in Philadelphia. I’m a science nerd, and the museum was a jaw-dropping scientific tour de force that educated and entertained me and my classmates. The best part about visiting the museum is its affordability; tickets are only $5. If there’s a better use of your hard-earned money (and time), I’d love to find out about it.

14. Get Your Crayon On

There’s a thin line between fantastic and kitschy. Crayola toes the line effortlessly with the Crayola Experience in Easton, Pennsylvania. It’s essentially a smaller, crayon-inspired theme park, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less fun for kids of all ages. Plus, it’s cheap to visit. Annual passes are less than $40, making the Crayola Experience one of the best values in family entertainment if you want to explore the park more than once a year.

15. Explore Longwood Gardens

Nestled in Chester, Pennsylvania, Longwood Gardens is a must-visit for any family who wants to appreciate nature on a budget. Their botanical gardens cover over 1,000 acres and routinely host fireworks shows, live music, and other special events to make the already-inexpensive admission even more value-packed. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of nature growing up, visiting Longwood Gardens is an exciting experience for many families.

Gymsport  is the largest gymnastics, tumbling, and parkour facility in PA. Their 36,000 square foot complex offers a limited Open Gym for any athlete wanting a safe place to work on their skills or who just want to jump, tumble and have fun. During the school year, Gymsport opens its doors for Preschool Playtime where parents can bring in their children (ages 5 and under) for parent-supervised playtime in their exciting Jungle Gym and on preschool equipment. The cost is $12 per child per hour of play. 13. USC Community & Recreation Center, Upper St. Clair

Carnegie Science Center inspires and entertains by connecting science and technology with everyday life. 20. Throw: Indoor Axe Throwing,  Pleasant Hills

While you won't find me here with a toddler, this experience of axe throwing is sure to please your older kids. Walk-ins are accepted based on availability Wednesday - Thursday 1-8 pm, Friday 4-9 pm, Saturday 11:45 am - 9 pm and Sunday 12 pm-5 pm. Children under 16 are required to have an adult present. 21.  Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh  

Ask my kids where their favorite indoor play space is, and the answer is going to be the Children's Museum. With 5 levels of fun, plus the backyard play space, you can spend hours here. We like to start in the Studio where the kids can create their own art that they will take home. Starting our day in the Studio allows us to leave any projects on the racks to dry while we are exploring the rest of the museum. From there, they run straight to the limb bender, or what I lovingly call the ant hill wall (it reminds me of an old school science project watching the ants move around from behind a piece of plexiglass). We could easily come down here and spend all day just in the wall but at some point, I call them out, so we can move through the Makeshop, Attic, Garage, and rest of the 1st floor exhibits. 22.  Laser Storm Pittsburgh, Ross Township

A short drive from the South Hills, this is an afternoon well spent. Play laser tag daily from noon to 9 pm. $8 per game - approximately 20-minute sessions.

Have you ever been indoor iceskating, but not on ice?! Here's your chance! Fun Slides might be a little bit of a drive from the South Hills, but it'll be worth it to experience the world's only indoor carpet skate park!   funslidespark.com

ASCEND Pittsburgh is the perfect place for all ages of beginners and advanced climbers. It includes indoor facilities and outdoor training sessions. Rock climbing, rope climbing, yoga and exercise facilities are offered. Prices vary for admission and memberships. ascendclimbing.com

25. AMF Mt Lebanon Lanes, Mt. Lebanon

If you can get here when kids bowl free, that's a major bonus. Even if they can't, pop in for a quick game of bumper bowling or spend an hour in the arcade playing throwback video games of OUR youth!

26. Altitude, Bridgeville

Altitude Trampoline Park is located right behind the DMV in Bridgville and offers endless fun for kids of all ages. Altitude often runs an Endless Jump Pass for just $10 a month, making this affordable fun for everyone! Sign up for their e-mails to snag the special the next time it comes out. During the school year, bring your junior jumpers to Altitude for $7, weekdays from 11am-1pm for Junior Jumpers Jam. altitudetrampolinepark.com

27. McDonalds, Bethel Park

I don't know about you but we don't have the budget to play out all day every day. I love McDonalds on Fort Couch Road for that quick fix! McDonalds indoor playground equipment is designed for children ages 4-12, but adults can go in with caution with their smaller kiddos. Make sure you bring socks for the kiddos as you can't wear shoes or be in bare feet. I like to bring a pair of socks from the trampoline park so there's no unnecessary sliding. Bonus that there's free wifi!

28. The Bible Chapel, McMurray

Another fam favorite freebie hidden gem is the indoor playground at the South Hills Bible Chapel. It's open during the Bible Chapel's normal business hours, Monday - Thursday 9-5. If the doors are locked (they will be when pre-school is in session), you can buzz in at door 5. There is also a cafe that serves breakfast, lunch, smoothies, coffee, and espresso from 9am-2pm. I highly recommend trying their breakfast sandwich!

29. Lilliput Town Center,  McMurray

Kids love to play in the child sized store front. Watch them use their imagination to buy groceries in the grocery store, make a pet better at the vet’s office, ride a trolley, create a masterpiece in the art studio, get a new “do” at the beauty salon, put out a fire as a fire fighter and create culinary masterpieces in the bistro.

30. Snapology,  Bridgeville CLOSED

Snapology is the premier partner for STEAM activities and offers year-round learning through play in their hands-on Discovery Center. In addition to their public sessions, they also offer private birthday parties and virtual programming.  My kids love the variety of activities, all STEAM-based. There are Legos, big building blocks, digital and traditional art, games, clubs and so much more! Philadelphia

As the nation's sixth-largest city, Philadelphia is a major economic hub in the Northeast, so it certainly doesn't lack urban amenities in addition to all of its historical and cultural landmarks. The city's prime location in the region is, according to Abby Trimborn, the co-founder of Philly Property Group , one of its biggest advantages. With New York City and Washington D.C. less than two hours away from downtown Philadelphia, residents enjoy access to two more major job markets while living in a city with a much more affordable cost of living.

Trimborn also explained that the demand for homes in Philadelphia has decreased by 14 percent, which is good news for buyers. "We are currently positioned in 'lower demand,' which means it's more favorable for buyers in this market," she said. She highlighted the family-friendly Northern Liberties neighborhood, which has experienced a building boom in recent years, with over 5,200 residential units built or currently in development. According to data from Zillow, the median home value in the city is $215,593.

Lancaster's cost of living hovers around the national average. However, median home prices are about $50,000 lower at around $337,233, according to Zillow. This is one reason the city is a wonderful place to retire; Lancaster ranked third in U.S. News & World Report's most recent list of the best places to retire in the U.S., thanks in part to home affordability and access to quality health care. The region blends urban and farm landscapes, giving residents a choice between distinct lifestyles. And since it sits at the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country, Lancaster also has a vibrant blend of cultures, reflected in its rich arts scene.

A combination of outdoor recreation, a small-town feel, proximity to cities like New York and Philadelphia, and affordable housing (the median home price is $156,435) led to a 45 percent increase in inbound migration in 2022 , the second largest nationally after Miami.

"Scranton has a lot more to offer than just the backdrop of The Office ," Virginia Rose, president and CEO of Lewith & Freeman/Luxury Portfolio International , said. "Scranton has seen an increase in home values, up over 17 percent this year. Our realtors have found that when relocating to the Scranton school district, ease of walkability and access to state park lands have been the largest driver of location."

Clarks Summit, just north of the town, and downtown Scranton, known for its historic mansions, are two neighborhoods Rose recommended potential buyers look into.

The draws are many: endless mountain views, clean air, small-town living, and tranquility. If you're lucky, you can even wake up to beautiful lake views every morning.

Rose explained that potential buyers can find waterfront homes here for under $1 million, which is rarely the case nationwide. "Hawley is the quintessential small Pennsylvania town, and their downtown partnership has created activities all year long, including summer/fall farmers markets, Lake Fest, Winter Fest, and much more. There are several communities between Lake Ariel and Lake Wallenpaupack that offer ease of living and amenities like private pools, lakes, golf, and more," she added.

Kennett Square

Located 40 miles west of Philadelphia, Kennett Square borders Delaware and is part of Chester County, known for its excellent schools. Nestled in the Brandywine Valley, Kennett Square residents benefit from many outdoor activities and access to miles of hiking and biking trails. Annual events such as the Mushroom Festival (the town is known as the Mushroom Capital of the World because it is home to many mushroom farms) and the many museums and historic landmarks make it a popular destination with visitors and a social hub. That doesn't mean, however, that residents have only historic homes to choose from. 

"New townhomes and apartments are popping up around the town with easy walkability to local restaurants and pubs, parks, and exercise facilities," Paul Greenholt, real estate agent at Patterson-Schwartz Real Estate , explained. The median home price at Kennett Square is currently $566,196 , up six percent since last year.

Harrisburg is so much more than Pennsylvania's administrative hub. The capital is rooted in history; it’s home to the National Civil War Museum and it’s less than an hour away from Gettysburg National Military Park. With the Susquehanna River running through the city and the Appalachian Trail just north of it, residents are treated to an abundance of activities like hiking, water sports, and camping. U.S. News & World Report also recently ranked Harrisburg the best place to retire in the U.S. and 38th in its ranking of the best places to live in the country.

While many people choose to settle in Glen Mills because of its proximity to Philadelphia, there are plenty of things to do in this small town, one of the most sought-after communities with great schools.

"There are many fun and popular attractions in [the] Glen Mills area — Grace Winery, Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride, Newlin Grist Mill Park, The Golf Course of Glen Mills, and the Palmer and Tyler Arboretums, just to name a few," Karen Johnson, real estate agent at Patterson-Schwartz Real Estate/Luxury Portfolio International , suggested, adding that one of the largest shopping malls in the country is just a short drive from town.

Liberty Bell Center

The Liberty Bell is well-known across the world. Its cracked appearance does not take away from the symbolism and history of the bell. During peak season the line leading into the Liberty Bell Center can stretch outside the building. It’s best to make it the first or last thing you do in a day to avoid these queues. However, you can also sneak a peek through the glass wall of the building if you don’t want to stand in line to get up close to the bell.

Independence Hall

Just across the street from the Liberty Bell is Independence Hall. This is the original home of the Liberty Bell and the place where the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The forefathers of America once stood in the hall and debated the terms of the constitution. It is an incredible place to visit but you can decide whether you want to see it from the outside or if you want to tour the inside.

National Constitution Center

New York City

In Philadelphia, SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transport Authority) runs the city’s buses, trolleys, subways, and trains. These modes of transport are affordable and reliable. You can expect to wait about 15 minutes between each ride.

Taxis are also readily available across the city and at the airports. However, they are expensive compared to public transport and rental cars. In addition, during peak times or if traveling to an event, the price may escalate even further. Taxis are still convenient if you need to get around the city quickly.

Finally, a rental car may give you more freedom to plan your schedule. Most of the hotels have parking garages, and finding a parking space near the attractions around the city is not that bad. Just plan ahead and find the closest parking garages to your destination so that you won’t waste time looking for a parking space.

There are three airports in Philadelphia – Philadelphia International, Trenton-Mercer, and Northeast Philadelphia airport. Depending on where you are staying and where you are flying in from, you can land at these three airports.

Philadelphia International Airport is closest to Center City, being just 14 minutes away. However, Northeast Philadelphia Airport is also less than 25 minutes away from the city. Trenton-Mercer Airport is the furthest from the city center, and you can expect about a 40-minute drive to get into the city.
