Jason David’s son, Jayden, was diagnosed as an infant with Dravet Syndrome, a rare form of life-long epilepsy categorized by frequent and prolonged high-intensity seizures that are often drug-resistant. Even so, by his fifth birthday, doctors had prescribed Jayden 22 anti-seizure pills per day that left him nearly immobilized. Still, Jayden continued to experience multiple daily grand mal seizures lasting over an hour that caused violent muscle contractions and temporary loss of consciousness. He also experienced less severe myoclonic seizures consistently throughout the day. As a father, Jason felt defeated, having held his convulsing son countless times since his first seizure when he was just a tiny and perfect four-month-old boy.

It’s a heartbreaking sight for anyone. And as a parent who wants nothing more than to protect their child, severe seizures are a soul-crushing experience that leaves most feeling helpless and out of control. The daily trauma pushed Jason to consider suicide, but instead, he decided to fight.

Feeling as if the doctors and medical system was failing he and his son, Jason began attending different support groups and seminars throughout the country to learn more about Jayden’s condition and how other parents supported their child’s well being. “It was eye-opening and I really learned a lot,” Jason says. “Everything comes from the autoimmune system. It’s about learning to balance the pieces because your sick kid is kind of like a broken puzzle.”

After more than four years of daily seizures, 42 times in an ambulance, and 300 shots of rectal valium to rescue Jayden from the intense full-body convulsions, Jason began researching Cannabidiol (CBD) and medical marijuana. He reviewed countless studies reporting on its ability to act as a neuroprotectant and even discovered that the Department of Health and Human Services had filed for a patent. In 2011 Jason purchased a CBD tincture from a state-licensed dispensary in Oakland – those wishing to do so online to treat their pets with CBD can visit the website here – and held onto it for two weeks before deciding to give the holistic treatment a try. “And that was Jayden’s first seizure-free day since the diagnosis,” says Jason. As the use of CBD related products is said to help manage the symptoms of seizures, chronic pain, and many more ailments/conditions, it comes as no surprise to find that some people may decide to use a Cbdistillery coupon , in the hopes of getting discounts off CBD oil, for example. This may be worth doing some research into, especially if this is something you’ve been considering for a while.

Jason continued providing Jayden CBD for a month as he monitored his son’s progress. After weeks of consistent reductions in seizures, the single-dad decided to begin slowly weaning Jayden off of the 22 pills he took daily. “The pharmaceuticals were really impacting his quality of life. He wasn’t eating, walking, communicating,” describes Jason. Every day Jayden teetered between non-responsive or excitably upset demonstrating severe autism-like tendencies. As his dad slowly removed the pills from Jayden’s daily routine, he began smiling, chewing, and walking. “Each time we eliminated a pill, Jayden became more human.”

With so much progress made, Jason was frantic when the same CBD brand he had purchased and administered seemed to be less effective. Confused, Jason had the product lab tested for potency and the results were unsettling. “That batch contained no CBD,” he notes.

Because of inconsistencies in dispensary products due to a lack of state-mandated regulatory testing at the time, Jason again opted to take matters into his own hands to ensure his son continued to progress via pure and quality-consistent medical marijuana. Jason began consulting Dr. William Courtney, a physician respected globally for his work in pediatric cancer treatment with cannabis. Dr. Courtney educated Jason on the medicinal properties of the cannabis plant, as well as the importance of ratios and testing.

Following continued education and a few trial and error runs, Jason began consistently producing ‘Jayden’s Juice’, a high-quality 20:1 full-plant extract. He had the batches tested at labs to ensure safety and quality prior to administering the tincture to Jayden. And each day, Jayden improved.

Jason began speaking up about his son’s success with medical marijuana at Dravet Syndrome Foundation conferences and support groups he frequented, but he didn’t receive the response he expected. “I wanted to share my story in hopes of helping other parents and kids suffering through this, but I was kicked out of various meetings in different states,” he explains. Jason was ahead of his time.

Within a year Jason and Jayden’s story received national recognition through CNN and later on Weed Wars , a documentary series. In June 2015 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a cannabidiol (CBD) oral solution, produced by GW Pharmaceuticals and marketed under the drug name Epidiolex, for treatment of Dravet Syndrome, epilepsy, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in patients aged two years and older.

At the start of 2016, Jason opened the doors of Jayden’s Journey, a state-licensed dispensary located in Modesto. Here, all card-holding patients and the family’s of children suffering from serious illness are welcome to explore the possibilities of treatment with quality medical marijuana products. The dispensary provides not just the product, but continued support and education through monthly group meetings for pediatric patients with epilepsy and various autoimmune disorders, as well as veterans suffering from PTSD. “When a child is sick, the whole family is sick,” says Jason, a reality he himself has lived.

The production of the Jayden’s Juice Brand and the founding of the Jayden’s Journey storefront continues to provide an opportunity to spread Jayden’s story in hopes of helping other families and children who are suffering and feeling lost in the mainstream medical system.

It took nearly three years to wean Jayden off of the 22 pills doctors prescribed. It’s hard to believe that the smiling boy is the same who was held by his heartbroken father for nearly 200 seizures a day throughout the first five years of his life. Today, Jayden receives Jayden’s Juice products daily to keep seizures to a minimum and continues to have many seizure-free days.

DRAVET SYNDROME: University of Washington’s departments of Pharmacology and Psychiatry tested CBD’s ability to effectively reduce seizures in a well-validated mouse genetic model of Dravet Syndrome. Mice who were given CBD prior to thermally induced seizures experienced shorter and less severe seizures than the mice who did not receive CBD. Mice who received CBD twice daily as a preventative measure experienced a 70 percent reduction in the frequency of seizures. Source: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

AUTISM: US National Library of Medicine and National Center for Biotechnology Information has published numerous studies reporting on CBD’s effect on comorbid symptoms of autism such as aggression, self-injury, hyperactivity, and anxiety. A January 2019 clinical trial reported a 67.6 percent improvement in comorbid symptoms of children with Autism at a median age of 11. Source: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

You may have heard their story on Weed Wars , Weed 2 (with Sanjay Gupta) , and the documentary Culture High . Jason David began treating his son Jayden with cannabidiol when he was was four years old. He obtained his first CBD tincture from Harborside dispensary in Oakland, California, and documented the first four days of treatment on the short-lived television show Weed Wars. Now five years later and Jayden is nine years old, taking his own brand of CBD medicine appropriately named “Jayden’s Juice.” We met Jason, Jayden and a dozen of other patients currently using Jayden’s Juice as their medicine for epilepsy and autism.

Jayden has Dravet syndrome, also known as severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy (SMEI). It is a type of epilepsy with seizures that are often triggered by hot temperatures or fever and often begins around six months of age. 70%-80% of patients with Dravet syndrome carry rare mutations in the sodium channel gene SCN1A, which encodes an important component of neuronal firing, creating a deficiency in preventing seizures. Approximately 90% of Dravet mutations are ‘de novo’, meaning they are not inherited from a parent. In Jayden’s case, neither of his parents carried the gene that, in extremely rare cases, can be inherited.

Dravet syndrome it is characterized by cognitive impairment, behavioral disorders, and motor deficits. Behavioral deficits often include hyperactivity and impulsiveness, and in more rare cases, autistic-like behaviors. SMEI is also associated with sleep disorders including somnolence and insomnia. The seizures experienced by patients with Dravet syndrome become worse as the patient ages since the disease is not very predictable when first diagnosed.

Jayden was born a normal boy. At four months old, he started having seizures and developed Dravet Syndrome. Jason describes it as a downward spiral from then on. Jayden was prescribed 12 medications, including rectal injections of Valium for his seizures. He was having grand mal seizures that lasted an hour and a half, and he would have myoclonic seizures all day long. Grand mal seizures involve a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions, caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It is the kind of seizure most people picture when they think of seizures. Myoclonic seizures are brief shock-like jerks of a muscle or group of muscles, where the person is usually awake and able to think clearly.

To control the seizures, doctors prescribed a “magic three” cocktail of pharmaceutical drugs that initially incited a honeymoon phase for a few months, but then things worsened.

“We were at a life and death situation. Jayden was dying from the medications,” Jason said.

In April of 2011, Jayden had not slept for a few months. Jason said, “Imagine not sleeping one day, let alone not sleeping everyday. I made a decision to make a change. God showed me a sign to give my son cannabis.”

Jason began conducting his own research on CBD, at a time when no other parents were out there talking about cannabis with children and epilepsy. The Cash Hyde Foundation was a charity he found for children with cancer, but did not find any support for Dravet syndrome patients.

His research kept leading him back to the United States patent number 6,630,507, issued to The United States of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services (Washington, DC), issued October 7, 2003. He founde evidence that the government owns the patent to using cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. Not only is this proof that the Federal government knows there are medical benefits to cannabis, it is hard written proof that CBD is a neuroprotectant.

Convinced CBD was the answer, Jason went to a dispensary to obtain CBD. The part of the story left out in Weed Wars was that he had the medicine in his possession for two weeks before he administered it to Jayden. “Everyone was scaring me. The first day I gave it to him, was the first day that he didn’t have a seizure in his life. I went back to the same dispensary, and got the same company’s CBD brand. There were no labels showing percentages, or levels, or ratios, or anything like that. I gave it to Jayden and it wasn’t working. I realized something was wrong,” he recollected.

At that point in time, Jason started working with Dr. William Courtney, a world renowned doctor; known for curing cancer for an 8 month old baby with cannabis. He educated Jason on ratios and testing. Jason then had the medicine he was using tested, and found out that there was no CBD in that batch.

Shortly thereafter, he began further researching plant material, the flowers the plant itself, and was able to obtain a high-CBD, low-THC plant. He began asking other people to make the medicine for them. For 6 months, a company made Jayden’s medicine, and Jason even helped them onto the cover of the LA Times, which is when they told Jason they would no longer make the medicine. Jason explained, “That left me hanging; [it] left me desperate.”

As fate would have it, one day at a restaurant, Jason met a local man who had heard his story and wanted to work with him. At the time, Jason was paying $400 for ounces and $2,800 per half pound in order to make medicine, it was costly trial and error process. He received donations from friends and his church to help subsidize the cost of the medicine while he figured out the right ratios. He says he gave the plant to 10 people and this new guy was the only one to not dilute the ratio.

“He was growing it correctly with the ratios, the others ruined the plant. It’s whole plant, not hemp. Hemp isn’t for medicine, it’s like the garbage of cannabis,” Jason said.

At one point they tried hemp CBD and Jayden had 9 grand mal seizures in one day.

Jason explains, “It’s not one size fits all. This plant is not half evil and half good.”

Cannabidiol was so successful for Jayden, Jason started weaning him off the opioid medications. CBD gets metabolized through the same liver channels as benzodiazepines. Jason found that CBD did not work during the withdrawals which included attacks, tremors, and hallucinations, so he started giving Jayden THC and THC-A.

THC-A is a non psychoactive chemical profile of the plant that has anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and antiemetic effects. “Everyone just talks about CBD, CBD, CBD. They see it on TV; but you need the whole plant,” Jason stated.

Jason points out that people develop a tolerance and notes that adjustments must be made from time to time. He admits that while using cannabis and cannabidiol oil has made monumental improvements to Jayden’s quality of life, his life is still not perfect. Jason also explained that sometimes it is hard to pinpoint the appropriate dosing for each patient, and that it is a trial and error process.

Through their research, they found that each patient has a different reaction to different bases. Jason says they have some patients using a coconut oil extraction doing great while others do terribly with it and the same with olive oil, MCT oil, alcohol extractions, etc., using the same plant material.

Prior to using cannabis oil, Jayden was having about 200 grand mal seizures a day. Jason even had trouble obtaining rectal diazepam at Walgreens because his insurance company thought he was selling it on the street. Since they have weaned him off 22 pharmaceutical drugs, and are down to the last two pharmaceuticals.

Jason says he’s working on setting this project up, so he can really focus on weaning Jayden off the last two pills. “It’s hard, he needs my full attention in going through the withdrawals. He’s my number one priority,” Jason said.

It took three and a half years to get Jayden off 22 pills, and Jason says taking a 10mg pill and even shaving off just a hair of medication can causessevere withdrawal symptoms like head zaps and seizures. Benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome can be extremely dangerous, especially for a child. Jayden never had these symptoms before, but the doctors chalked it up to his epilepsy.

Jason said, “I went and talked to people on this medication, two years after being off the medication, and they were still having brain zaps.”

He used to attend support groups and Dravet Syndrome Foundation conferences around the nation. “I got kicked out of all the Dravet syndrome meetings in different states – before anyone came out with cannabis, I was treated very bad. The same people that kicked me out are trying to legalize only CBD states,” Jason said. “I feel bad for these parents, because they’re not being educated on the whole plant. The whole plant is the most important thing. There has been a fight for this plant for such a long time. They’re brainwashed to think CBD is the only thing that is good for them… That’s the biggest mistake anyone can make.”

Jason believes it is not right to fight for one specific aspect of the plant., He observes parents fighting for only CBD right now, and hypothesizes that when it does not work they will come to the realization that they need the whole plant. Wishy washy stances hinders the parent’s credibility and makes it difficult for city council members and legislature writers to take them seriously.

He shared stories about other parents that say CBD did not work for their children, because they only tried one product, and now they’re turning to brain surgery. Marketing can make people believe there is only one product out there, but Jason points out there are 20,000 different strains of cannabis, thousands of ways to extract it, and hundreds of different bases. There is no “right” way, what works for one person may not work for another.

“People aren’t trying different things. Our kids should not suffer. Don’t give up,” Jason said.

Another story he shared was a family that turned to fenluramine/phentermine (fen-phen), after learning about one German study treating epilepsy with the popular 1980s weight loss drug. They gave up on cannabis after moving to Colorado because they had not seen the results they were hoping for with their 5 year old.

Jason stated, “We experiment trial and error with chemicals, why not experiment with this plant? In thousands of years, no one has died from cannabis. On pharmaceuticals, your kids are getting worse, a quarter of a million people die a year from pharmaceutical drugs, but no one says a thing. Pharmaceuticals don’t work, so why do they keep prescribing them? I’m not anti-pharma, but some of the things we use are pretty scary. There’s good and bad in everything.” When I asked Jason what he hopes to achieve with Jayden, he said, “I‘m thankful for everyday and every moment, I’ll take whatever I can get. I’ve already achieved more than I thought I would ever achieve with Jayden already. So, I’ll take anything and I’ll take everything. My goal is to get him to say, ‘I love you.’ He’s getting closer and closer and he’s trying. I hope to God he will, but I know he loves me. Actions speak louder than words, and he shows more action on how much he loves me, how much he needs me, and how much he adores me; I need him too. He’s made me the man I am today. I’m very thankful for what I do have, I could be in a much worse position if it wasn’t for Jayden.”

“Jayden’s suffering isn’t for nothing. Jayden has saved many lives. Instead of cannabis being a last resort it can hopefully be a first resort, so people don’t have to go through what Jayden did,” Jason said optimistically.

The UCSF pediatric neurologists that are treating Jayden support the use of CBD and cannabis oil for epilepsy. They are treating over 100 patients there, the youngest being 8 months.

When asked what he would do if there was no access to CBD or THC oil, he said, “If I had to use anything else I would use diet, that’s the main thing I would use.”

He is a religious man stating, “I’ve talked to my Bishop at my church. The big thing out there with our Christian community is that everyone’s scared of it because we’re Christians. It says in the bible, ‘Use my plant, use my seeds.’ Don’t blame God for saying it’s evil. God wouldn’t do that to us.”

“Our community is blinded and very easily brainwashed from propaganda… this plant – that’s never killed anyone. This plant is so dangerous, but not killing anyone, but we use everything else including alcohol, which kills people every day. I say, ‘Try it, if it doesn’t work, then I understand.’ But what if you try it and it changes the rest of your life? What if it saves your life?”

“When people call me telling me crying, [saying] ‘I owe you my life, I love you,’ and I haven’t even met this person; it’s because they’ve tried Jayden’s Juice, and it’s saving their life, it makes me stronger to fight for what’s right.”

Jason proclaims, “It doesn’t matter that it is cannabis or not, if it was Pepsi that was saving my son’s life, I’d be fighting for Pepsi. This is what’s saving my son’s life, and I see it saving so many other’s lives, so I have to fight for it.”

“We have the right to this God given plant. It’s been put on Earth for a reason. So, it’s against the law to use something natural. They say we haven’t researched it, but it’s been here for 5,000 years. But we’ve researched everything else in the world, and drop bombs in other countries, and make these pills out of nowhere that go through the FDA process in a year and next thing you know, they’re legal? But we can’t figure out this plant, that’s been here for 5,000 years, that shows ancient remedies from back in the day from people using it; but we can’t figure it out? It scares me,” Jason passionately states.

“The first time I showed the patent document to my attorney, he called me up the next morning and said, ‘I couldn’t sleep last night, because of that paperwork you gave me, I read it, I couldn’t sleep. That stuff helps with everything! I have family members with, this, this, this, and this, can you help me?’”

Jason continues, “It’s scary that it’s a Schedule I drug, yet the Federal government owns the patent on it, but there are no medical benefits? What are the medical benefits from benzos, alcohol, cigarettes; all these things that are legal – energy drinks – all these things people are dying from. How is all that legal but this plant is so evil, and vicious and deadly? Propaganda has ruined what this plant can do for so many people.”

Jason hopes within 5-10 years everyone has safe access. In California, there are no real regulations, so he poses the question that what if we regulate and legalize it? Then there would not be anything to be afraid of.

“It just shocks me that Arizona already has regulation for it. You’re only keeping it away from the people that really need it. We need more research, real research, not lab rat testing. Why not find out from the people that are really using it,” Jason said.

“We are cannabinoid deficient. The last time we had cannabinoids was as a babies from breast milk. All auto-immune disorders come from that deficiency… There are so many things that are going to come out in the near future. CBD is going to be old. THC-A is the new CBD that people don’t even know about yet,” he foresees CBN and CBG becoming groundbreaking components with specific defined medical benefits.

“The saddest thing is you’re going to lose a loved one because they’re not going to use the medicine – the real medicine. I hate the word “high.” We don’t get high we get medicated; you know when you get high? On a chemical,” Jason said.

“I thank God for this gift that brought my son back. Cannabis saved my son’s life and saved my whole family. When you’re child is sick and dying your whole family is dying; it brought back my son, it brought back my family.”

Jason says, “Do your research. I tell doctors, ‘If you really believe you want to help someone, and you want the truth, instead of knocking it, why not research it and try it? But if it does work, research it and prove it.’”

“If one person tells you it’s working, and everything else out there isn’t working, try it. We’re still learning on an everyday basis. Jayden’s Juice is an option. We made it so we can help people. We’re not saying it works for everyone or it cures anything, it helps with different symptoms.”

He told me about multiple sclerosis patients, autistic patients, and cancer patients all having success with Jayden’s Juice.

Jason recommends that when trying CBD or THC oil, start with a few drops, a very low dose, then move up slowly, as no two people are alike.

“It’s not one size fits all, read their bodies. It’s not milligram per pound. Figure out what works. everyone wants to find a cure right away and it doesn’t work like that, but sometimes it does.”

Lincoln Riley has a new outlook as USC opens spring practice

He’s the quarterback whisperer. The Heisman maker. The offensive mastermind. But on Tuesday, when USC opened spring practice, Lincoln Riley was the defensive observer.

The head coach who built his career as a quarterback maestro watched every defensive drill intently during the brief media viewing period of Tuesday’s practice, signaling a new era for USC quarterbacks that goes beyond just the field.

While replacing Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, USC is also making a change in the meeting room, where, for the first time since 2010 when he got his first coordinator job, Riley is not coaching quarterbacks. He shifted Luke Huard to quarterbacks coach after the third-year assistant coached inside receivers for the previous two seasons.

Huard will oversee the quarterback competition between incumbent Miller Moss and redshirt sophomore transfer Jayden Maiava while Riley takes a step back to manage a program in transition with a new defense.

“When you’ve done something for 20 straight years it’s a little strange, but I’ve enjoyed it, I have,” Riley said. “I feel like it’s allowed me to be more present in other areas of the program.”

LOS ANGELES, CA - NOVEMBER 18, 2023: USC Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley looks.

Four things to watch as USC begins spring football practice

As USC prepares to open spring practice on Tuesday, here are four things to watch, including the quarterback competition to replace Caleb Williams.

March 19, 2024

Riley has bounced in and out of various position group meetings during the offseason. He’s keeping an eye on the offensive line with redshirt senior Jonah Monheim moving to center. The depth at tackle, where sophomore Elijah Paige and redshirt junior Mason Murphy are the only two other players with significant game experience at the position, is “a little bit of a concern,” Riley said Tuesday.

With almost a brand-new defensive staff installing a new system, Riley proudly said he has not missed a defensive install meeting this spring.

“I’m further ahead than the players on it, but I’m learning it for the first time, kind of like they are in a way,” Riley said. “So to be able to be there, to be engaged, to be able to have those conversations with our players, it helps me in my conversations with our defensive staff about what we’re doing or about strategy.”

Riley, who coached quarterbacks at East Carolina, Oklahoma and USC while handling offensive coordinator or head coaching duties, said he always envisioned hiring a designated quarterback coach, and there were even conversations about making the change last season. But the timing didn’t fit. Now after coaching three Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks, Riley hands the reins to Huard.

The former North Carolina quarterback, whose brothers Brock and Damon starred at Washington and went to the NFL, coached quarterbacks and was the offensive coordinator at Illinois State, Georgia State and Sacramento State. He joined the Trojans as an offensive analyst in 2022, but was promoted to inside wide receivers coach after Dave Nichol passed away. Huard’s experience coaching receivers in USC’s offense has been an advantage to his new proteges, Moss said.

“I love Coach Huard,” the redshirt junior added. “Obviously he comes from a very quarterback-centric family, so he speaks our language.”

After his record-setting showing in the Holiday Bowl, Moss is the likely successor to Williams, although the addition of Maiava added to the competition this summer. The transfer from Nevada Las Vegas who started 11 games has already impressed teammates with his strong arm, sophomore receiver Zachariah Branch said. Maiava threw for 3,085 yards and 17 touchdowns to 10 interceptions last year for the Rebels and split reps Tuesday with Moss and walk-on Jake Jensen.

Miller Moss leads USC to a Holiday Bowl win over No. 16 Louisville

After Caleb Williams skipped the Holiday Bowl, Miller Moss tossed six touchdown passes and steered USC (8-5) to a win over Louisville (10-4).

Dec. 27, 2023

Riley said he wouldn’t commit to naming a starter on a particular timeline, instead opting to “let these things evolve.”

Moss has already outlasted a coaching change and several quarterback battles to get his shot at his childhood dream school. He didn’t flinch when the coaches brought in another transfer to compete.

“People love to speculate about that kind of stuff,” Moss said, “but as I’ve said before, my job is to help us win as many games as we can, so that’s what I’m going to continue to do.”

Moss has already proven his potential after throwing six touchdowns against Louisville. He chuckled when asked if his life changed after setting a USC record for most touchdown passes for a quarterback in his starting debut. People started recognizing him on campus, he admitted.

From working in the shadows behind Williams, Moss acknowledged it’s “definitely different” to open spring practice in line to potentially start.

“Excited to see what a team looks like when I’m able to really put my DNA on it,” Moss said.

Teammates commended Moss’ growth in leadership during the offseason. Branch, who earned first-team All-American honors as a returner last year, touted the quarterback’s consistency at practice every day, and noted how the quarterback from Bishop Alemany has grown enough to pull him aside for individual coaching points.

“Confidence is a big thing,” Branch said, “and I mean, he has the right to act confident.”

Whether he has earned the right to start is still up for debate. When asked if he considered Moss the starter, Branch smiled wide and shrugged.

“You gotta leave it up to Coach Riley. I’m just the receiver.”

What's the difference between THC and CBD?

THC is the active cannabinoid in marijuana that causes a psychoactive effect or simply put, THC gets you high.

CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid and is used mostly commonly for medicinal purposes. Products with high percentages of CBD can help alleviate pain, inflammation, anxiety, and spasms especially epilepsy.

How do Indica and Sativa differ?

Indica cannabis strains are often more of a sedative and can be useful for treating insomnia also best consumed before bed.

Sativa strains typically produce an energizing effect for patients that is more cerebral and is best consumed for social settings, physical activity, and sparking creativity.

Hybrid strains are a happy balance of both indica and sativa.

How can I can consume cannabis?

These days there are many different ways you can inhale and ingest cannabis. Smoking a joint is not the only way to inhale cannabis flower – Vaporizing  is an increasingly popular, and much healthier method of inhaling. Oils and capsules have been popular on the medical market for years, and can be taken as is, or mixed into homemade edibles or topicals.

How long does it take to kick in?

How quickly you feel the effects mostly depends on your method of use:

Smoking or vaping. You can begin to feel the effects of cannabis within  2 to 10 minutes . It kicks in quickly because it enters your bloodstream via your lungs within minutes of inhaling it.

Eating. Your digestive system metabolizes pot when you eat it, which can take a while.  Edibles  usually kick in within  30 to 60 minutes , but can sometimes take as long as 2 hours.

Dabbing. With  this method , a highly concentrated form of marijuana is smoked through a special pipe. Dabs have a higher THC content than other forms of cannabis, so the high kicks in almost  instantly .

What's the correct dosage for edibles?

Here are a few pointers based on anecdotal evidence and some research:

Take a nap. Sleeping can help you relax if your high has you feeling anxious or paranoid. It also gives your body time to process and eliminate the cannabis. You’ll likely wake up feeling refreshed and more alert after a few winks.

Try some black pepper. There’s some  evidenceTrusted Source  that caryophyllene, a compound in peppercorn, increases the sedative effects of THC, which could calm you. Just take a container of black pepper and have a sniff without inhaling it. Chewing on a couple of whole peppercorns also works.

Eat some pine nuts. Some  researchTrusted Source  shows that pinene, a compound in pine nuts, has a calming effect and improves clarity. Skip this method if you have a  tree nut allergy , though.

Try some CBD. Yep, it may sound counterintuitive, but  CBD  may counteract the effects of THC. Like THC, cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid. The difference is the receptors in your brain that they interact with. THC causes the high you get from cannabis, but CBD has a calming effect that may help dull your high.

Have some lemon peel. Lemons, especially the peel, contain compounds that have a calming effect. In theory, ingesting some lemon peel could counteract some of the psychoactive effects of THC and help you come down. Try steeping some in hot water for a few minutes, then remove them and take some sips.

What Do Labs Test and Why is Testing Important?

The passage of Prop 64 legalized adult-use, recreational cannabis in California beginning in January 2018. It also required that cannabis be tracked from seed to sale, with batch testing done in certified laboratories to ensure safe cannabis products. Labs are required to test for a variety of things, including potency (THC and CBD percentages and ratios) contaminants like mold, mildew, and microorganisms, heavy metals, and pesticides to name a few. This is one of the main benefits of buying your cannabis from licensed dispensaries like Jayden's Journey; you know it has been tested.

What are Terpenes and Why Do They Matter?

Terpenes are found in all plants and determine its aroma and characteristics. In cannabis, terpenes play a direct role in the effects you feel from a particular strain. In fact, many cannabis experts believe a strain’s terpene profile is more important than whether it’s an Indica, Sativa, or Hybrid. For example, linalool is a common cannabis terpene (also prevalent in Lavender) that helps the body relax. Pinene is its opposite, causing enhanced alertness and energy. It smells like it sounds, like a pine tree, and it’s also an excellent bronchodilator. Scientists are discovering more and more terpenes in cannabis, and the results will be truly exciting for both medicinal and adult-use consumers.

The potency of  edibles  can vary widely from product to product. We advise patients to tread carefully when consuming edibles and recommend starting with a 10mg dosage. Always a good idea to reference the product label and follow the suggested consumption instructions.

You will want to avoid eating edibles on an empty stomach as you might be tempted to up the dosage out of pure hunger. Everyone has a different tolerance to THC, for those less experienced, start small dosage amounts. We advise waiting at least 45 minutes to an hour before deciding to up the dosage.

How long will the effects last?

How long the effects last can vary greatly depending on the dose and potency. The more you use and the higher the THC content, the longer the effects will stick around.

How you consume cannabis also affects when the effects peak and how long they last.

Here’s a breakdown, according to  Drugs and Me , a site by the Mental Health Education Foundation:

Smoking or vaping. The effects peak around 10 minutes after consumption and typically last 1 to 3 hours, though they can linger for up to 8 hours.

Eating. The effects of edibles usually peak around 2 hours after consumption and can last up to 24 hours.

Dabbing. Similar to smoking, the effects of dabbing usually last 1 to 3 hours. If using a high THC concentrate, you could feel the effects for an entire day.

Cannabis hits everyone differently, so while your high may only last for a couple of hours, you could potentially feel the comedown or  aftereffects  for several hours or through the next day. It’s best to go low and slow if you’re new to cannabis.

What's the advantage of vaping as opposed to smoking?

The most persuasive advantage is that vaping has shown to reduce the amount of harmful carcinogens and toxins ingested by the patient. Vaping only heats the marijuana while smoking is the combustable form of consumption. We often recommend vaping for customers who have respiratory problems such as asthma, lung cancer, or COPD.

It has also been suggested that  vaping  is more efficient, producing a stronger effect with the same amount of cannabis. Many users also find that it smells and tastes better as well as being extremely discreet. These advantages also make it desirable for patients who might be new to medical marijuana as it's easier to intake smaller amounts.

With the good also comes some bad. Vapes require a lot of maintenance with constant cleaning and charging necessary for it to work properly. It can also be a pricey investment for someone who is just a casual user. While there are a few disadvantages it's fair to say the pro's definitely outweigh the cons.
