We made a 10 day Mediterranean cruise with my ship 3 in Sept. 2016. Only in La Spezia it rained continuously and briefly in Rome. Otherwise only sun up to 30 degrees.

The first night there was a massive storm and blue bags everywhere, but afterwards only sun, great weather. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises, just beautiful.

We were in Greece, Italy (Naples and Sicily) and Marseille. Anywhere from 20 to 25 degrees. Just once rain in Greece.

Weather Rating: 4 stars – Good

On our first cruise “a dream cruise on the AIDAperla” from Barcelona via Palma, Corsica, Rome, Livorno and back with the beautiful AIDAperla. During the trip from Corsica to Rome, the weather was quite rough. The crew had everything under control and we always felt very well taken care of.

The weather was simply super in the eastern Mediterranean, as well as the destinations would be more than worth seeing.

Unfortunately we had a lot of rain, and on the only day at sea there was a storm but heavy, wind force 10 which was very unusual in this region.

Weather Rating: 1 stars – Mostly bad

Cruise from 14 – 21 May 2017 Venice-Bari-Corfu-Athens-Dubrovnik-Venice. Unfortunately it rained slightly in Corfu and in Athens it poured all day so that we didn’t even go ashore. Nice weather for the rest of the days!

Weather Rating: 3 stars – Mixed

Eastern Mediterranean from/to Venice: wonderful weather, always sun, hardly any wind, hardly any waves. Except Corfu, a thunderstorm cell caught us, 4 hours of continuous rain, then sun again.

It was sunshine every day, 25 degrees Celsius every day, no rain, hardly any clouds, magical sunrises and sunsets. It couldn’t be better

Partially rainy, cool and very windy, with a really autumnal touch.

Weather Rating: 2 stars – Tricky

Mediterranean cruise packing list: What to pack when cruising Europe

Melinda Crow

Packing for a cruise in the Mediterranean has unique challenges. As an American, you'll definitely be flying rather than driving to your cruise port, so over-packing isn't a good option (unless you want to pay extra fees). Plus, the Mediterranean region is large and cruise ships regularly call at over a dozen different countries. The weather in the northern Mediterranean city of Venice can differ greatly from that of the cruise ports in the southern Greek islands like Santorini and Crete. Your packing list will have to adjust — especially if you're on a long cruise that covers lots of ground.

After five Mediterranean cruises , I've learned some tips and tricks to pack everything I need for cruising in Europe without needing a second suitcase or paying overweight baggage fees. Here, I share my packing secrets and a handy Mediterranean cruise packing list to streamline your vacation preparation.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What to pack for a Mediterranean cruise

mediterranean cruise october weather

The dress code of your cruise line and how you expect to spend your time play a big role in what goes into your suitcase. On most cruise lines sailing the Mediterranean, you'll be fine with casual attire. Toss in a few items that allow you to dress up a notch in the evenings, and you'll have your onboard wardrobe all set.

How you expect to spend your time on vacation is also key. Your Mediterranean cruise shore excursions might include anything from hiking volcanoes and ancient ruins to attending cooking classes or wine tastings. You may be touring museums, cathedrals or mosques on some days and taking boat rides, lounging on the beach or doing water sports on others.

I find it useful to organize my packing around the activities I have planned, but throw in a few items that allow for spontaneity. For example, I always pack a swimsuit, even if I don't have any water activities planned. You never know when the hot tub will start calling your name.

Daytime clothing

Shorts, lightweight shirts, capris and sundresses all work well for most daytime activities on and off the ship throughout the Mediterranean during the warmer summer months. Plan on adding long pants and layers for spring and fall cruises. Hats, caps, visors and sunglasses are a good addition for excursions any time of year, as is a long-sleeve sun protective shirt. If your onshore adventures will take you to a church or mosque, plan to bring clothing that covers the knees and shoulders.

And remember that not all Mediterranean ports of call are touristy. In some cases, you will be walking city streets alongside businesspeople. Couple that with the fact that Europeans tend to dress a bit more conservatively than Americans, and you will find that what would fit in on a port day in Rome is a bit dressier than what you'd wear in The Bahamas.

Evening wear

Mainstream cruise lines in the Mediterranean like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises have casual buffet dining options if you prefer not to dress up for dinner, as does Viking. For most main dining rooms and specialty dining venues, eveningwear consists of slacks or skirts with nice shirts. If there is a dedicated formal night, jazz things up with accessories or a sparkly top, or go all-out with a suit or cocktail dress. Jackets and ties for men would be optional except on formal nights, where they would fit in nicely on most ships.

This is the clothing category that can bust your plan to pack lighter, but it's important to have the right footwear in Europe. With so many places to explore on foot, the most important shoes to pack for a Mediterranean cruise are comfortable walking shoes.

Beyond that, you'll need flip-flops or water shoes if there's a beach in your cruise plan, and a dressy pair of shoes for the evening. You could get by with a nice pair of deck-style shoes like Sperry's or hiking sandals like Tevas or Keens for almost everything if you can color coordinate with your outfits. I recently managed a nine-day cruise in the Mediterranean with a pair of slip-on hiking shoes, a pair of black Teva sandals and one pair of black heels, which I could have done without (and been more comfortable).

The number one piece of gear for a Mediterranean cruise is a day bag or backpack. I use a fold-up lightweight nylon backpack that allows me to carry snacks, bottled water, sunscreen and even a beach towel — anything I think I might need on a day in port — but still has plenty of room to stash my souvenirs. It's designed to zip up into its own built-in pouch the size of a large wallet, so it takes up little packing space or weight.

If you are a snorkeler, pack your own mask and snorkel so you can take advantage of surprise opportunities to see what's beneath those brilliant blue Mediterranean waves at the beaches of Sardinia, Santorini or even in Croatia. If you're a hiker, consider collapsible hiking poles — which can come in handy on walks to hilltop ruins. Photographers will want their camera gear if their cellphone camera won't cut it for vacation photos.

Packing tips for a Mediterranean cruise

mediterranean cruise october weather

It's easy to overpack for a Mediterranean cruise. To avoid that, choose a neutral base color like black, navy or tan and plan your outfits to mix and match that color scheme. Pick clothing items you can dress up or down as the event requires. Neutral colors will make you feel more at home throughout most of the Mediterranean, where daytime fashion is rarely flashy.

Keep your materials lightweight for hot summer afternoons, but plan for a possible added layer on board the ship, where air conditioning can be chilly. Lightweight layers also come in handy on cruises in March, April, October and November when daytime temperatures can be in the 50s and 60s.

I can get through a weeklong cruise with a base of two pairs of black shorts, a pair of black capris, a pair of casual black slacks and a black tank dress. I mix those up with lightweight shirts or tanks each day, dressier tops at night, some scarves and a black sheer blouse. Keeping clothes to a minimum leaves me more room for important things like snorkeling and scuba gear.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise tips to enhance your European vacation

Many travelers check their bags on long flights to Europe. To hedge your bets should your luggage go missing, divide your necessary items among multiple suitcases, including your carry-on bags. That way you'll have a few clothing changes if one bag is lost.

Also, since Mediterranean cruises often begin with a preboarding hotel night, pack what you need for that first night in a packing cube in your carry-on to make it readily accessible, even in your jet-lagged daze. If your airline supplied an amenity kit, be sure to toss that in your carry-on for the first night so you aren't rummaging through your suitcase for a toothbrush. I have been known to make up my own little amenity kit if I'm flying cheap and know I won't get one from the airline.

Mediterranean cruise packing list

Here's a handy packing list for your Mediterranean cruise.

  • A casual, lightweight shirt for each day of the cruise.
  • A few pairs of shorts, capris (perfect for days when you need more coverage either due to cooler temperatures or visits to religious sites), leggings or skorts and maybe a casual dress to wear during the day during summer. For spring and fall cruises, swap the shorts for slacks or jeans.
  • Jacket, fleece vest or sweater for early- and late-season sailings.
  • Unless you're a water fiend, one swimsuit is usually enough for the Mediterranean. There are simply too many amazing land-based things to occupy your time. Don't forget clothespins to make it easier to hang it in the bathroom to dry.
  • A cover-up for the beach or onboard pool.
  • Athletic wear and shoes if you plan to walk, jog, hike, cycle, work out in the ship's gym or attend any fitness classes.
  • Jeans, slacks, collared shirts or nice T-shirts, capris, skirts or dresses for evenings on board. Take half of what you think you need, then re-wear evening clothes at least once. Plan to mix and match tops and bottoms to make this work even better.
  • Jewelry, belts and accessories, along with a large scarf or shawl that doubles for warmth and as an appropriate cover-up for bare shoulders.
  • Optional: True eveningwear if you plan to dress for an onboard formal night or just feel like putting on the glitz. This would include suits for men and cocktail-style dresses or pants and tops for women.
  • Pajamas, underwear and socks. Mainstream lines supply robes (but rarely slippers) in suites and for repeat guests at certain loyalty levels. Premium and luxury lines usually have both robes and slippers in the room.
  • A light rain jacket or poncho — with a hood — that fits into your backpack in case it rains.
  • Sweater, dressy jacket, over-shirt or shawl for cold dining rooms and theaters onboard.
  • Waterproof shoes or sandals if you plan on visiting the beach.
  • Walking shoes, sneakers or hiking sandals.
  • Dress shoes for the evening (unless you can coordinate your day shoes or sandals).
  • Hats, caps or visors, plus magnetic hooks to hang them up in your cabin.
  • Prescription medication and a first aid kit with common over-the-counter medicines.
  • Sunscreen and after-sun lotion or gel.
  • Cosmetics, toiletries and hair accessories.
  • Ultra-lightweight tote bag and/or backpack.
  • Re-useable water bottle and a reusable straw to do your part in keeping single-use plastics out of the ocean (and so you aren't stuck sipping your frozen Bellinis through the paper straws many cruise lines now use).
  • Phone, camera, tablet and the associated chargers and spare batteries. Consider a multi-outlet adapter to expand the available USB and electric outlets in your cruise cabin.
  • Sports gear you prefer like snorkeling equipment, hiking poles or your own bicycle helmet.

Bottom line

Packing for a cruise in the Mediterranean isn't that different from packing for any other cruise. Check the weather and the shoreside activities for each port, make sure you have a good pair of walking shoes, then double check your cruise line's recommendations for eveningwear and you'll be all set.

What is the Best Time for a Mediterranean Cruise?

Spring is a great time to visit the Mediterranean on a cruise. Learn more from our experts about on what to expect on a cruise to the Mediterranean.

Learn more about  Mediterranean cruises

Summer, fall and spring are the best times for Mediterranean cruises.  Rome ’s Colosseum is gorgeous in the fall.  Dubrovnik  comes alive in summer. A  Greece  cruise in spring brings warm Ionian breezes and bougainvillea bursting from windowsills. You can’t go wrong with a Mediterranean cruise any time of the cruise season, but certain months are better than others depending on what you want to experience. During winter there are few options for cruises and many places close for the season.

When is cruise season in the Mediterranean?

Mediterranean cruise season begins in spring (May) and lasts until late fall (November). There are pros and cons of each time of year to visit the Mediterranean. Often, if you visit in high season, you will have better weather and more open attractions, but thicker crowds. Shoulder season is the time right before or after high season. In terms of Mediterranean cruises, shoulder season would be spring or fall.

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit the Mediterranean?

Mediterranean cruises in Spring Spring is a great time to visit the Mediterranean. The seas are calmer by May and the temperatures start to climb into the mid-70s, which is a great temp for open-air plazas and beaches. The crowds will be thinner, as most kids aren’t out of school yet.

Pros: You’ll have more room at major attractions, as kids are still in school and families start vacationing in June. Cons: Depending on where you cruise, water temps may be brisk for a swim in the sapphire seas.

Mediterranean Cruises in Summer School is out, which makes summer the best time to cruise the Mediterranean for families with tight schedules. It is also the best time for those who like it hot. Really hot. Temperatures in Spain, Italy, Greece and Croatia will be in the 90s, but the tranquil ocean waters invite a cool off. August is a popular vacation time for locals in Rome and there may be some closed shops and attractions. Summer is also peak season, so expect hordes of tourists everywhere.

Pros: A great time to hit the beaches. Sunny and dry weather. Cons: Peak season means more tourists. In August in Italy, some shops may be closed for vacations.

Mediterranean cruises in Fall Fall is a considered the best time to cruise the Mediterranean for cultural excursions without the crowds. September and October are part of the shoulder season, when kids go back to school and vacation prices dip. The sun won’t be quite as fierce, which makes walking the hills of  Santorini  or the winding streets of Rome a much more enjoyable experience. The crowds will have thinned out and you’ll have more space to enjoy popular attractions such as Las Ramblas in  Barcelona . Fall harvest season means more wine festivals and  Food and Wine® Tours .

Pros: Less crowds, cheaper prices, more food festivals for harvest season. Cons: More rain showers. Some shops and restaurants close in fall, once peak season is over.

Is November a Good Time to Cruise the Mediterranean? October and November are at the very end of the Mediterranean cruise season. Don’t expect hot, sunny beach weather but cooler temps in the 40s to low 70s Fahrenheit. Anticipate more rainy days and waves. Winter in the Mediterranean is mild, but some shops may close in preparation for the upcoming season. October and November are known for some of the best discounts and deals. Best Time to Cruise to The Mediterranean

Oleander Garden, Italy

Wondering what time of year is best for a Mediterranean cruise ? Whilst the primary Mediterranean cruise season runs during the warmer months of the year, you can still enjoy plenty of what the region has to offer during the winter months. There are pros and cons to cruising during each season, depending on your preference. But there's never a bad time to cruise to the Mediterranean.

Full of art, culture, romance, and iconic landmarks, each season offers its unique take on the Italian and Spanish ports that make up these beautiful itineraries in Europe. If you're ready to plan your next cruise holiday , read on for our take on the best months and seasons to cruise The Mediterranean.

Deciding What's Important to You

Because there are pros and cons to sailing during the different seasons, it's essential to decide what your priorities are. Some questions to ask yourself include the following:

What Kind of Weather Do You Prefer for Travel?

Do you want to visit the Mediterranean to lie on the beach and swim at most ports you visit? If so, you will likely prefer to cruise during the warmer spring and summer months when the water temperatures are also higher. If you are more interested in seeing the sights and prefer cooler weather, a fall or winter cruise holiday might be preferable.

Remember to factor in the rain too. Some parts of the Mediterranean can see considerable rain. For example, January, February, November, and December are often the rainiest months. June through September are often the driest, which coincides with the peak cruise season. Adverse weather can also affect the seas. Are you prone to getting seasick? If so, the risk of choppy winter seas may be a deterrent.

Do You Want More Port Options?

As you might expect, there are fewer Mediterranean cruise options in the winter months. If there are specific "must-visit" ports on your list, a peak season cruise might be a better option. If you have some flexibility with what you want to see and do, a winter cruise could save you some money. Plus, you'll see fewer crowds.

RELATED CRUISES: 10-Day Mediterranean Cruise from Barcelona: Italy, France & Spain 12-Day Mediterranean Cruise from Rome (Civitavecchia): Santorini, Italy & Turkey 10-Day Mediterranean Cruise from Istanbul: Greece, Turkey & Egypt

Do You Mind Crowds?

With the peak cruise season comes more crowded destinations. You may visit a port where several other cruise ships are docked, and non-cruise tourism is bustling. Summer months are peak travel times for local Europeans as well, especially in July and August. If you really want those warmer temperatures but aren't keen on big crowds, try for a cruise toward the end of the season. The water temperature should still be on the warmer side, but not as many people are on holiday since school is starting again.

What Activities Are Important to You?

Are there certain activities that you are most interested in experiencing during your Mediterranean cruise ? Visiting in the off-season may coincide with festivals and events you wouldn't get to see during the summer months.

The following are seasonal events and activities that won't be available during every Mediterranean cruise, but you might be lucky enough to catch if you plan accordingly:

  • Carnival Week (usually in February in Malta, south of Italy)
  • Christmas markets (end of November to mid-December)
  • Easter (possible events at the Vatican in March or April)
  • Cannes Film Festival (usually held in May)
  • Bastille Day (July 14th in France)
  • Lavender season (mid-June to mid-August in Provence)
  • Music festivals and other events

Consider planning ahead if you'd like to try catching some of these seasons or festivals. Though, really, there's never a bad time to explore some of the most picturesque places in the world.

Some other popular activities may be closed during the off-season, especially in tourist-dependent destinations. For example, you may find certain restaurants closed in the Greek Islands if you visit during the winter. You also have to contend with holiday hours. In some cases, that might mean things are open later and longer, or the opposite can happen as well. If you try to eat out during certain holidays, you might find many places closed or completely booked up. Under normal circumstances, this might not be an issue, but if you have less than one day in port, it can be frustrating.

Best Time to Cruise to The Mediterranean

Packing for a Winter Mediterranean Cruise

Packing for a Mediterranean cruise in the winter takes a little planning ahead. You definitely want to consider layers since the weather is unpredictable. Depending on the ports you visit, it can be very cold during the winter, so you want to be prepared whilst not over-packing. For women, consider sticking to one colour palette, which will help you mix and match items. Some winter essentials:

  • Lightweight winter coat that is rated to zero degrees. You'll want a warm winter coat, but not a bulky one taking up all your luggage space.
  • Fingerless gloves or ones with smartphone-ready tips in the fingers. You don't want to take them off every time you want to snap a photo on your phone. Plus, you risk dropping a glove.
  • Choose shoes with good non-slip soles. Some older cobblestone streets in cities are slippery enough when dry. They can be even worse in rain and snow.
  • Don't forget a bathing suit and flip-flops for the ship. You may want to book spa treatments or hit the hot tub.
  • Mini umbrella that can fit in your purse or bag you plan to carry around town.
  • If you are bringing camera gear, consider a waterproof bag, a waterproof backpack cover, or a dry bag inside your other bag. You never know where bad weather will strike, and you may not have somewhere to wait out the rain undercover.
  • Warm beanie and scarf. Winter winds can make the cold feel even colder. If you aren't used to cold winter weather, you may find your ears feeling like they are frozen. Plus, a beanie is the perfect winter accessory when your hair won't cooperate. You get to be warm and still get cute photos without your hair blowing everywhere.

Why Fall Is the Best Time for a Mediterranean Cruise

A region of diverse cultures, natural beauty, rich history, great weather and more can't-miss sights than almost anywhere else on earth, the Mediterranean attracts millions of travelers every year and spans several must-see destinations from Italy to Israel, Croatia to Cyprus, the Amalfi Coast to the Turquoise Coast, Corsica to Sardinia and Portugal to Greece.

For many people, visiting the Mediterranean is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But with so much to see and (typically) a limited amount of time to take it all in, maximizing your Mediterranean vacation is a must.

Learn why September and October is, without a doubt, the best time of year to cruise the Mediterranean . The perfect mix of cosmopolitan cities and medieval towns, big and small islands, sandy beaches and rugged coastlines, ancient sites and modern marvels—a fall Mediterranean cruise is one of the best vacation values in travel.

Regent ship in Santorini, Greece

Island-hopping via cruise ship is the ideal way to see the Greek Isles.

When Is the Right Time to Visit?

Since planning a vacation is often dictated by factors beyond your control—from budgets to big events, the crowds to the cruise line's itineraries or the amount of time off you have to others you're traveling with—the Mediterranean is one of those picture perfect places that can actually be enjoyed year-round.

Cinque Terre in Italy

Cinque Terre in Italy is one of the most colorful cities in the world. If you have the freedom to choose when to cruise, here's why our experts believe experiencing the Mediterranean in the fall months makes the most sense.

Sunny days, cooler temperatures

Temperatures in the Mediterranean drop as leaves fall, making autumn days ideal for sightseeing. Cities like Rome will be cooler, making a walk around town squares much more pleasant compared to the summer months. Onboard, the mild temperatures make for a much smoother and more comfortable cruising experience overall.

Fewer crowds, calmer seas

By September and October, the summer cruise crowds have usually dissipated. This means less tourists in port so must-see spots and can't-miss sites will be typically easier to explore and navigate. The "shoulder season" also means less people so ships aren't as packed giving you plenty of space onboard to relax.

The French Riviera is a bucket-list destination.

The French Riviera is a bucket-list destination. Cities along the French Riviera that are normally jam-packed tend to wind down this time of year, allowing cruisers to enjoy nearby cruise ports at a more leisurely pace. The city of Nice stands out with its medieval town, gorgeous beaches, and golden hues against cloudless blue skies in the fall. The Mediterranean waters also remain warm enough for a swim as late as November and calm enough for easy sailing.

Insider Tip: After a cool dip in the Mediterranean’s calm, azure waters, try Nice’s favorite tuna sandwich, the delicious pan bagnat.

Best food and wine of the season.

Food and wine is another highlight for Mediterranean cruises in the fall. Of course, Mediterranean food and wine is available all year round, but the fall signals harvest season and many cities celebrate by hosting unique festivals for true food lovers.

Fresh caught octopus hanging from stall.

Octopus is a delicacy in the Mediterranean and you'll never have it fresher! Depending on the specific cruise itinerary you choose, Barcelona is a great port of call to visit during a fall Mediterranean cruise. Aside from architectural gems like La Sagrada Familia and Parc Güell, the city hosts the Sitges Wine Harvest and Cavatast Festival in October drawing from nearby Rioja and Ribera regions.

Insider Tip: Don’t miss the street food festivals in Barcelona! Try the Moscatel sweet wine or roam the city for fresh seafood, roasted sweet potatoes, pumpkin soups and marzipan.

Amazing wildlife abounds.

Also occurring every fall, the Mediterranean shores and coasts come alive with a diversity of marine wildlife and bird species. In fact, most migrant bird species of Northern Europe fly across the Mediterranean around autumn. This time of year, raptors and flamingoes can be found in Spain, France, and Portugal while endangered species like the lesser kestrel, rock partridge and the legendary peregrine falcon are often seen in Croatia and Montenegro respectively.

Marine life under the Mediterranean sea

Marine mammals are found everywhere in the blue waters. Marine mammals throughout the Mediterranean include the monk seal and cetaceans like the fin and sperm whales, short-beaked common dolphin and harbor porpoise. Hundreds of unique fish species also abound in the bright blue waters of the Mediterranean. It’s not unusual to see a school of sardines and anchovies when you head in for a dive or snorkel during the fall months.

Insider Tip: Watch the skies in Crete for the enormous raptor lammergeyer or the incredible bearded vulture.

Simple, safe and surprisingly affordable, a Mediterranean cruise allows you to experience a variety of destinations in comfort with a virtually endless amount of activities both on land and at sea. And while summer might be peak cruising season, try sailing in the fall if you want to make the most out of the Mediterranean .

What We Packed – Mediterranean Cruise In October/November

I had been looking forward to this cruise for so long, and our varied itinerary saw us call at Rome, Livorno (both Italy), Cannes (France), Palma (Majorca), Barcelona (Spain) and Naples (Italy) before returning to Rome. With seven nights on board the NCL cruise ship Norwegian Epic , we also opted to stay one night in Rome before boarding so we would have time to see the sights of that ‘must visit' city too. Otherwise you tend not to see much of your embarkation port.

Although cruises have very generous baggage allowances, we did have to fly to Italy from the UK and also transfer ourselves to the port which is in Civitavecchia – about an hour from Rome city centre. As we chose to do this by train (it's cheap, just 5 Euros each) we didn't want to hinder ourselves with too much luggage.

NCL's Norwegian Epic

NCL's Norwegian Epic

Flying with Alitalia , I was disappointed to find they have quite a low carry-on allowance. The maximum bag dimensions are much smaller than other airlines – surprising as they are Italy's national carrier – and the weight limit is just 8kg. You can also carry a ‘personal item' such as a small bag or laptop; this is a bit vague on the Alitalia website, but basically something that will fit under the seat in front of you.

For speed and convenience we do prefer to travel with carry-on only, but in this case we didn't have suitable luggage to fit so we would have to check a bag. Fortunately this was included in the fare (or so we thought… read on!)

Between two of us we checked one smallish suitcase (a bit larger than a carry-on), took a soft carry-on bag which served as an ‘overnight bag' for our Rome stay, and I had my handbag/purse which held our tickets/passports/money etc. Have to say on our trip no-one checked either the dimensions or weight of our bags, but maybe they just looked ok.

I packed the items we would need for the first night/next day (change of top, underwear, PJs) in the carry-on so we wouldn't need to unpack the suitcase at all, with the exception of toiletries which were easier to check rather than strictly adhere to the liquid allowance. These were placed inside the case lid so they were easy to access. Unfortunately hubby couldn't find his socks in the morning so started rifling through my neatly packed case… sigh 😉

NCL Epic - Waves Pool Bar

Norwegian Epic – Waves Pool Bar

Our trip departed in late October, returning in November. From the weather forecasts, we expected reasonably warm weather throughout of around 68 degrees (20 degrees C) and generally dry. The Mediterranean weather can, of course, be changeable though, and rain is always possible. It can also be much cooler out at sea than on land, but a few layers will suffice and we didn't take any ‘cold weather' gear. The coldest time would be leaving home for the airport at 3am.

To travel in I wore:

  • Denim skirt
  • Long-sleeved t-shirt
  • Zip-up, hooded fleece
  • Padded gilet
  • Bead necklace
  • Comfy, stylish flat shoes
  • And carried my handbag
  • 1 pair of cropped trousers
  • 1 pair of jeggings
  • 1 smart dress
  • 2 casual short-sleeved t-shirts
  • 2 smarter short-sleeved t-shirts
  • 1 evening top
  • 1 smart cardigan
  • 1 tunic/kaftan
  • 1 sarong/scarf
  • 1 pair of casual pumps
  • 1 pair of smart heels
  • 1 set of costume jewelry
  • Waterproof fold-away jacket
  • A clutch bag

I ensured my choices all co-ordinated and everything went with everything else.

Hubby wore:

  • Convertible walking trousers with a belt
  • Long-sleeved rugby shirt
  • Smart cotton sweater
  • Light jacket

And packed:

  • 1 pair of smart jeans
  • 1 pair of tailored shorts
  • 4 casual short-sleeved t-shirts
  • 3 smart long-sleeved shirts
  • 1 pair of smart shoes
  • Foldable backpack for day trips

I should say that on this cruise – and indeed all NCL cruises – there is no ‘formal night' as such. Their motto is ‘freestyle cruising' and you're free to ‘dress as you please'. They had one ‘Dress up, if you want' night when I wore my smart dress (I wore it another night too) but there was no requirement for men to wear suits of any kind. We did see a few people in black tie, if that's your preference, but plenty more in just jeans. The women probably dressed up a little more (on all nights). The only dress restriction is no shorts or sportswear in a couple of the restaurants, but everywhere else pretty much anything goes which makes the packing a little easier, especially for men.

Dress up, if you want (some did, some didn't)

Dress up, if you want (some did, some didn't)

The only things we didn't wear were the swimwear and my kaftan – to be honest we rarely do, but better to take them just in case. We've cruised before but not at this time of year, and one thing I hadn't thought about was the darker evenings – sunset was usually by about 5pm, so by the time we were back on board from a day's sightseeing there wasn't really time for lounging by the pool.

Weather-wise we were very lucky. Most days a short-sleeved shirt was sufficient, without ever being uncomfortably hot. It's a great time to visit the med for sightseeing; in the heat of summer I don't think we'd have had the stamina to see as much as we did (and there's plenty to see). We were caught in a couple of rain showers, and one thing I didn't pack was an umbrella ; I generally prefer a hat and coat at home, but in hindsight one would have been useful (although you can easily buy one – souvenir touts seemed to spring up with them just when needed!). I noticed that the Italians particularly all carried large, stylish umbrellas with proper handles (not compact ones) so if you use one it won't be out of place. There was one torrential downpour in the morning in Livorno; thankfully we hadn't got up too early and were still having breakfast so didn't get wet, but the upper decks of the ship were swimming in puddles!

When embarking the ship there was a luggage drop-off point just as you went inside the terminal, and they will deliver your cases to your stateroom for you. Ours arrived within an hour or so, but there can sometimes be a wait so if there are items you need urgently (swimwear perhaps) it's best to take these in your carry-on.

The disembarkation process was very smooth too, and with NCL you can just walk off with your own luggage at any time if you wish, which I like (so long as you're off by 9am). Otherwise you can leave your cases outside your room the night before (by 10pm) and they will be taken off for you. You are then given a timeslot to disembark, and the luggage is all waiting in the terminal for you to pick up. We preferred to walk off by ourselves, as on previous cruises we've had a really early timeslot (like 6am, although it was hard to see that the slots were enforced – they will hardly prevent you disembarking if you're late!). It did mean taking our cases to breakfast with us, so another good reason to minimise your luggage.

Norwegian Epic - All outside staterooms have balconies

Docked in Naples

We'd booked a taxi to take us back to Rome's Fiumicino airport, as there is no direct train from Civitavecchia (you have to change at Trastevere). Although, having used the Italian trains quite a bit by then I think it would have been pretty easy.

There was a lot of building work going on at Fiumicino, and whilst the Alitalia check-in desk is in Terminal 1, you actually fly from Terminal 3 – this means a lot of walking and an extra shuttle bus ride, so do allow plenty of time.

Oh, and that baggage fare? When we checked in to come home, our tickets came up as being a ‘Light' fare, which didn't include baggage. I thought this was a mistake – we'd checked a bag on the outbound flight after all – but we ended up having to pay 30 Euros. Thankfully we only had the one case, but I was so embarrassed! I had booked the flights on Expedia , and on reviewing the booking later couldn't see anything that indicated a Light fare, or that the two legs of the journey were different. I did complain, and was pleasantly surprised to get a refund of the baggage fee some weeks later! So, something to be wary of if flying Alitalia , and/or when booking on Expedia – I hope they've made things clearer now.

Europe does not close down after October

People live there and everything is open

I have been to Italy and Spain in October a n d it was just lovely!

BTW I gave also been to Rome in January and it was n I ce enough to sit outside at cafes

When we cruised in the Med at the end of October the weather was mostly fine and sunny. I didn't need a jacket in Rome or Naples. It rained in the evening of our port call in Monaco but that was the worst weather we had. The biggest difference I noted about cruising then as opposed to June or July was that it got dark much earlier. That's not a big problem really as we were back on the ship before dusk.

technoman is right to point out that there can be no guarantees. We may have been lucky, although I do believe there's more chance of sun than storms.

mediterranean cruise october weather

We’re all booked for 9 Oct with itinerary that sounds the same. When I looked for past temps , high teens to mid 20’s on average, with Greek islands are little warmer. Am expecting a shower or two with chillier evenings than I’m used to in Caribbean but still hoping to top up tan.

If your planning your own excursions you may find some attractions may have reduced hours or days compared to high season, but that’s easily googled.

To all seasoned cruisers: my hubby and I have booked an October 6-19 HAL cruise beginning in Venice. I assumed October weather would be similar to mid-west October weather but after reading up on the Mediterranean weather patterns, find that October can be rainy. If any of you have cruised (Venice, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Naples, Rome, Marseilles, Barcelona, etc...) during the month of October, I'd appreciate any info. you could share. Many thanks!!

I think that your timing is perfect. We have been in the Med during Sept/Oct for the past three years. Weather is usually very good in early-mid October. It is, along with springtime, our favourite time to go.

We were in Malta and Sicily from mid Sept to the end of October this year. We were on the beach and swimming for a few days around Oct. 20.

We boarded a cruise in Rome on Oct. 29 and had good weather for eight days through to Barcelona on Nov. 6. We had one morning of rain...BUT we just missed some very heavy showers by a matter of hours.

Thank you, iancal! I feel very relieved after reading your post! I was invisioning a soggy cruise! We have cruised before but it's been many years ago so thought we'd try a different cruise line altogether (having cruised on Princess three times and Norwegian once) and a little later in the year. Also, I traveled to many European countries with my high school students (so much fun!) and more recently I arranged a winter break vacation trip to Sicily ( Taromina was our base city) for just my husband and myself followed by another trip the following winter to Florence, Assisi, and then Rome. I'm an addicted European traveler and am SO looking forward to our cruise next October!! Thanks again for your comments!!

I just got off the Noordam a month ago after being on for 37 nights doing a b2b in the Med, leaving 27 September and then continuing on for the TA. Until we reached the Azores, we hadn't experienced rain, except for a quick thunderstorm late one afternoon as we were returning to the ship in Livorno. I wore short sleeve tops and either shorts and capris every day.

Just to confirm what you have already been told.....

We did a Med cruise Oct 2009 and the weather was glorious! I would estimate the daytime temps were betwen 23-27c, and I think it was hotter than that when we trecked up to the Accropolis in Athens.

We took an umberella with us each day - used it for shade.

I think you have picked the perfect time of year for your cruise, you will love it.

Please please please remember that weather is weather and as we all know weather patterns continually change.

Let me begin by saying that I love sailing the Med in April into May and in September into October. It is less crowded than in the summer and you don't have the hot and humid weather to deal with.

Precisely what your weather will be like is anyone's guess and even though one person said the weather was dry or another one wet is just that. It varies. You might have rain in some of these places like Venice and Rome. You might not. It doesn't rain everyday but you could be there when there is some rain or you might luck out an be there when there is none. If there is you just use an umbrella or rain coat. Same for the weather. It could be very warm or just warm or even a little cool early in the morning in some of the places. I've been there in October in Venice for a back to back cruise and had three days there. First day I thought I was in Alaska. It was rainy and cold. Second day was cloudy but warmer. Third day was hot and sunny. You just don't know.

Would I go in October? Absolutely. Can any of us guarantee the rain? Would I go? Yes.

I agree with Keith. I've been on seven Med cruises, six of them in October or November. While the weather can be absolutely beautiful and warm to hot in the Southern Med, it can also be chilly and showery. Just be prepared with various layers (including a rain jacket and perhaps a light fleece to layer under it if needed) and you will be fine.

As an example, the Med cruise I was just on started in mid-October through the end of the month. The first week was absolutely delightful: warm but not hot, no rain, smooth seas. The second week was cooler, showery with occasional downpours, and the seas were noticeably rougher (had to cancel two tender ports).

Overall, though, it is a great time of year to be in the Mediterranean. I'd rather deal with the occasional rain than with the heat and crowds of summer.

If you want to be absolutely certain (or as certain as you can be) then move the date up to the last week of September/first week of October).

We had rain on the day we went to Giverny. The rain stopped just in time for us to photograph Monet's gardens - which made the photos AMAZING! Honestly, if it rains, the overcast sky offers some of the best possible conditions for taking photos. The colors will be so vibrant! We had a cool day in Brugge on the same cruise - just wore a lightweight jacket. As others have stated, bring umbrellas and light layers including something waterproof.

And you still won't be certain. I've been there last week of September when it has rained and also when it hasn't. You never know.

Agreed. We were in Vienna/Budapest in mid Sept this year prior to flying south to Malta and warm weather. Rain and overcast. And it apparently rained all summer from what we were led to believe. Not at all what we anticipated.

Felt sorry for the folks on river cruises -lots of rain and elevated water levels in some rivers translated into itinerary changes for a few cruises.

We were in Rome from this Oct. 29 to Nov. 4 before our trans-Atlantic - weather was sunny about 70 F every day, and remained good until reaching Portimao, Portugal on Nov. 8. The first rain we had was in Lisbon Nov. 9.

This was our third Med to US T/A in recent years - all late October to early Novenber , and we've twice driven around Italy in October- we have always enjoyed largely good weather - better than September, when it can still be hot and humid.

I can recall a couple of Navy deployments to the Med in the 60's - when October was best month - of course, rain can happen any time, but October is probably the best month.

You will have passed the autumn equinox around Sept 21st, and the daylight hours are shorter, so the temperatures are dropping, but usually it's still warm. Obviously, the further south you sail the warmer it will be, but the weather is beginning to get a little unsettled. There can be some storms, and often some rain.

We usually had a week's holiday in the Med over school half term, around the 3rd week in October, and the sea is cooling down, so for swimming it was always best to go to the southern isles or Tunisia.

Just got back from our middle to end of Oct trip. We had fine weather in Italy both before and after the cruise - didn't even need jackets.

However the cruise through the Greek Isles in the middle was blustery, windy, and sometimes cool and rainy. Couldn't tender to Mykonos. Rained like a son of a gun in Kusadasi during the evening, and then was sunny and fair the next morning for Ephesus.

This is the way I would sum it up. Weather was changeable. The start of the day was not like the weather in the middle of the day, or at the end of the day. Be prepared for anything. Expect a little of everything.

The good thing about this time of year in the Med is that there is a lot of walking and climbing, even if you didn't expect it - Better to do that when you're not sweating and gasping. Also, far fewer people all over the place, so line-ups are shorter, the crush is less, and you might actually be able to get closer to some stuff. Wearing your rain/wind jacket.

Thanks to you all who took time to address my concerns about cruising in October! I'm sure we will experience a variety of weather conditions which will make for an interesting trip! Regardless of the weather I'm confident we will enjoy our cruise immensely! We are looking forward to our adventure!! 😊 . Next....hooking up with our "Roll Call" group!!

Please please please remember that weather is weather and as we all know weather patterns continually change.   Let me begin by saying that I love sailing the Med in April into May and in September into October. It is less crowded than in the summer and you don't have the hot and humid weather to deal

Good to know. Keeping these dates in mind in anticipation of a first Med cruise in October 2015 or May 2016.

Your Perfect Packing List for a 12-Day Mediterranean Cruise

mediterranean cruise october weather

For those seeking relaxation, stunning beaches, delectable food, and historically beautiful cities, a Mediterranean cruise is calling your name! If you’re thinking about booking your trip anytime soon, here’s what you need to know; from when to go to what to bring.

Travel on: A Mediterranean cruise

Why the Mediterranean?

Mediterranean Europe is undeniably one of the most beautiful, culturally rich, and exciting destinations in the world. From the ancient stone villages of Portugal to the quiet flare of Turkey, there’s an endless itinerary of beaches, culture, food, and history. Whether you’re looking for shorelines to relax on or ancient ruins to explore, there is truly something for every type of traveller . It’s that unique diversity that makes a Mediterranean cruise a perfect trip.

Why a cruise?

For many travellers , finding the ideal combination of relaxation and adventure can be tricky. It begins to feel like you have two options: booking a vacation or taking off on a backpacking journey – two things that are undeniably different. That’s why a cruise, specifically a Mediterranean cruise, is the perfect solution. You’ll be treated to all of the luxuries that come with a cruise, like lavish dinners, beautiful beaches, days by the pool, and a flawless tan. On the other hand, you’ll have time to explore ancient cities, hike unique landscapes, get to know the locals and indulge in history. There’s a difference between travel and vacation, and a cruise is one of the only ways to get that elusive combination of the two.

When to go?

The Mediterranean has unique seasons, each one different, offering various perks and experiences. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide which season fits you best.

Summer (July/August)

Summer is the high season for travel in the Mediterranean. This is when the region is typically at it’s busiest, bursting with travellers looking to soak up the sun. The weather is hot, the water is warm, and the coastlines are filled with tourists. While it might be the most popular season, it’s that abundance in tourism that has lots of travellers opting for the shoulder seasons.

Manarola at dusk

Spring (May/June) and Fall (September/October)

Spring and Fall are shoulder seasons and are widely considered the best time to visit. The crowds are much fewer, while the temperatures are comfortably warm and the sun is just as bright. In the Spring, the flowers are in bloom and the landscapes are lush and green. The fall brings mild days with beautifully crisp and clear skies. The water is a bit colder but definitely still swimmable, especially for those who love a refreshing dip.

Blue domed building in Oia, Greece

Winter is the offseason in the Mediterranean, meaning there are very few tourists. You’ll get to experience the peaceful atmosphere of iconic destinations, without the crowds or cost increases. That being said, for a cruise, it might not be desirable. In fact, many cruise operators don’t ofter winter departures. The water is cold and rough, the days are chilly, and many excursions are closed or cancelled . The solitude is lovely, but in terms of cruising, the conditions aren’t as ideal.

What to pack?

Assuming you’re boarding your cruise during the warmer seasons, here’s everything you should pack to get the most out of your 12-day Mediterranean cruise.

Port Hercule, Monaco

  • Walking Shoes: When you’re off the ship exploring, you’re going to want comfortable shoes. Sandals are great for while on board or at the beach, but running shoes are ideal for exploring when you dock.
  • Flip flops: Opposite to your exploring shoes, a great pair of flip-flops or sandals are a must for while you’re at the beach or lounging on the deck.
  • Bathing Suits: You’re going to spend a lot of time in the water, whether it’s in the hot tub or in the sea itself. Bring multiple bathing suits so you can continue enjoying the water even while the other bathing suit is drying.
  • Sundresses: A sundress is perfect for lounging by the pool or wandering around the beach. Plus with the warm temperatures, it’s almost essential.
  • Light shirts and pants: The weather is going to be hot, so come prepared with light t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, and breathable pants.
  • Sunhat and sunglasses: To avoid sunburns or heat stroke, a sunhat and sunglasses can be a real lifesaver. It will make your adventures at port a lot easier to enjoy.
  • A sweater or shawl: On occasion, the temperatures will dip a bit colder than comfortable. Having a sweater, shawl, or jacket can save the day.
  • A dressy outfi t: Of course, you’re going to want to dress up a night or two and enjoy a fine dining experience. That’s why bringing at least one dressy outfit along with you is a must.
  • Portable charger: If you want to stay connected, be sure to remember your portable charger. It’s easy to forget to charge your devices when you’re having a good time.
  • Laptop or tablet: For the times that you’re on the ship and have some downtime, having a tablet or laptop helps keep you connected and gives you the chance to share photos and memories online.
  • Camera or go-pro: Don’t forget a camera or go-pro to document your travels. The photo opportunities will be endless, so you don’t want to travel without one.

A street in Cagliari

Miscellaneous

  • Seasickness medication: It’s impossible to know how your body will react to a cruise. Better to be safe than sorry and pack some seasickness medication.
  • Sunscreen: Nothing ruins a cruise like a sunburn, so make sure you’ve got a bottle of sunscreen with you everywhere you go.
  • Photocopies of passport and travel documents: It’s always a good idea to travel with a photocopied version of your passport or other travel documents. Keep it with you at all times!
  • Binoculars: There’s some really cool wildlife in the Mediterranean. If you want to catch a better view of the birdlife, seals, turtles, sharks, or rays, binoculars will make it a lot easier.
  • Beach blanket: A nice big beach blanket will make your time on the beach much more enjoyable. Try to find something compact that’s easy to roll back up again.

From relaxing on board to hitting the pavement and getting to know the history, art, food, and culture the Mediterranean is known for, you’re sure to have an incredible time on your cruise. The best part? You’ll only have to unpack your perfectly-packed suitcase once, since you’ll be exploring destinations from the comfort of your cabin!

Tips for First-Time Cruisers in October

Tips for First-Time Cruisers in October

If you’re setting sail for the first time this October, the anticipation is likely mingled with a flurry of questions.

Cruising can be a different beast compared to other forms of travel, and being prepared can make all the difference. Here are some expert tips tailored for first-timers embarking on cruises in October.

Booking Strategies for the Best Deals

  • Early Bird or Last Minute: Booking well in advance can secure great rates, but if you’re flexible, last-minute deals for cruises in October can be incredibly attractive.
  • Consult a Travel Agent: Especially for first-timers, travel agents can help find promotions or deals you might overlook. They can also provide insights into cabin selections and itineraries.
  • Watch for Inclusions: Sometimes, what seems like a deal might exclude essential amenities. Always check what’s included, from onboard gratuities to drinks and excursions.

Tips for First-Time Cruisers in October

Essential Packing List

  • Pack for Multiple Climates: As discussed, October can be a transitional month weather-wise. Ensure you pack both for warmer days and cooler evenings.
  • Formal Wear: Many cruises have at least one formal night. Pack an outfit that meets the cruise line’s dress code.
  • Power Strip: Cabin outlets can be limited. Bringing a non-surge power strip can help charge multiple devices.
  • Travel Documents: Keep passports , booking confirmations, and travel insurance details in an easily accessible pouch.

Navigating Onboard Activities and Dining

  • Research in Advance: Most cruise lines release their activity schedules and dining menus ahead of time. Familiarizing yourself can help prioritize what you want to do.
  • Book Specialty Dining Early: If your cruise offers specialty dining options, book in advance to secure a table, especially if you’re eyeing a specific date or time.
  • Participate in Onboard Orientations: These sessions, often held on the first day, provide invaluable information and can help first-timers get acquainted with the ship’s layout and offerings.

Tips for First-Time Cruisers in October

Shore Excursion Tips

  • Group vs. Independent Tours: While group tours offer convenience, sometimes exploring independently can provide a more personalized experience. Weigh the pros and cons based on the destination.
  • Safety First: Always be aware of the time. Ships operate on strict schedules, and you don’t want to be left behind. If exploring independently, set multiple reminders and wear a watch set to the ship’s time.
  • Local Currency: While many tourist spots accept credit cards, it’s wise to have some local currency on hand for smaller purchases or tips.

In essence, while cruises in October come with their unique charm and advantages, the essence of a great cruise experience often lies in the details.

By being prepared, informed, and open to new experiences, first-time cruisers can ensure their maiden voyage in October is nothing short of spectacular.

October cruises

Safety and Health Considerations

When embarking on cruises in October, ensuring safety and maintaining good health are paramount.

From navigating potential weather disturbances to staying fit on board, here are key considerations to keep in mind for a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Navigating the Remnants of Hurricane Season

Parts of the Caribbean and the Atlantic remain susceptible to hurricanes during October, although the risk decreases as the month progresses.

  • Stay Informed: Before booking, research the typical weather patterns for your desired destination.
  • Travel Insurance: Opt for a comprehensive travel insurance plan that covers trip disruptions due to weather events.
  • Stay Flexible: Cruise lines prioritize passenger safety and might change itineraries based on weather conditions. Understand that these changes are for the best.

October cruises

Health and Wellness Onboard

Staying healthy onboard is vital, especially with the myriad of dining options and potential for reduced physical activity.

  • Stay Active: Utilize the ship’s gym, attend fitness classes, or simply take long walks on the deck.
  • Balanced Diet: While it’s tempting to indulge, ensure you maintain a balanced diet. Many cruises offer healthier menu options—take advantage!
  • Hydration: With the abundance of beverage options, don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

Preventing Seasickness

While modern ships are equipped with stabilizers, seasickness can still be a concern for some, especially first-time cruisers.

  • Choose a Central Cabin: Cabins located centrally and on lower decks tend to experience less motion.
  • Over-the-counter Medication: Consider seasickness pills or patches, but consult with a doctor first.
  • Focus on the Horizon: When feeling queasy, looking at a fixed point, like the horizon, can help.

October cruises

Travel Insurance Considerations

Beyond weather disturbances, travel insurance can cover a host of potential trip disruptions or medical emergencies.

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Ensure the plan covers trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and potential evacuations.
  • Pre-existing Conditions: If you have any medical conditions, make sure they’re covered or consider a ‘cancel for any reason’ policy.

Personal Safety On and Off the Ship

Ensuring personal safety is crucial, both onboard and during shore excursions.

  • Follow Ship Guidelines: Adhere to safety drills and guidelines provided by the cruise staff.
  • Stay Aware: During shore excursions, be aware of your surroundings, keep valuables secure, and avoid isolated areas.
  • Drink Responsibly: If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation and never leave drinks unattended.

cruises with kids

Environmental Considerations

This wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the section heading, but it’s worth noting the environmental responsibilities of cruisers.

  • Respect Marine Life: Avoid touching or disturbing marine life during snorkeling or diving excursions.
  • Limit Plastic Use: Refrain from using single-use plastics. Instead, bring reusable water bottles and bags.
  • Follow Leave No Trace Principles: Whether on a beach or in a port town, always clean up after yourself and respect the local environment.

In essence, while cruises in October offer a blend of adventures and relaxation, ensuring safety and maintaining health should be top priorities.

By being prepared and vigilant, you can ensure that your October cruise is not only enjoyable but also free from unwarranted disruptions or health concerns.

October cruising, with its enchanting blend of pleasant weather, vibrant festivals, and reduced crowds, truly offers an unparalleled experience. As the seas beckon and distant shores call out, travelers get a unique chance to rediscover the world’s beauty.

Yet, with this joy comes the responsibility to travel consciously, ensuring our voyages cherish and not harm our planet. By staying informed, making eco-friendly choices, and embracing local cultures, we not only elevate our travel experience but also ensure that the magic of October cruises remains undiminished for years to come.

Set sail, explore, but most importantly, cherish and protect. 🍂🚢

What to Pack for a Mediterranean Cruise

Last updated: November 7th, 2023

  • Find a Cruise

The Mediterranean is world renowned for its many breathtaking coasts, gorgeous cities, ancient history, and delicious cuisine. Who can resist its charms?

Taking a cruise around the Mediterranean is one of the best ways to discover this fantastic region full of culture, art, and romance. Our cruises visit popular ports like Barcelona, Spain, little-known towns such Santa Margherita in the Italian Riviera, and bucket-list locations like Santorini and Mykonos, Greece.

Since you’ll be packing for a multi-country cruise , it’s important to pack wisely for your journey.  Here are some tips on what to pack for a Mediterranean cruise.

Casual clothes

Couple eating ice cream while touring Italy

During a Mediterranean cruise, you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Make sure to bring a number of casual and comfortable clothes to wear during your days in port.

T-shirts, shorts, jeans, day dresses, and skirts are perfect options for days in port when you want to feel at ease. Focus on breathable fabrics, like linen and cotton, especially if you’re cruising in the summer months.

If you’re traveling during the shoulder season (April and October), bring a few long-sleeved t-shirts and light sweaters that you can layer on top of your clothes in case the weather gets chilly.

Couple flaunting their swimwear at the beach

What to pack for a Mediterranean cruise will always include swimwear. Pack at least three swimsuits for lounging on the beach in port and by the pool on board the ship. This way, you’ll always have a dry swimsuit at hand.

Swim cover-ups

If you’ll be spending a lot of time in your swimsuit, a coverup is a must. You’ll need one when walking between your stateroom and the pool. They’re also great for beach days in port when you want to take a break from sunbathing and swimming to enjoy a seaside lunch or drink at a nearby cafe.

Couple standing by the railing with Capri shore as backdrop

Protect your face from the sun by packing a hat that will keep the rays at bay. For men, a good baseball cap or SPF-protective hat will work, while ladies, if you want to feel like a glamorous, old-school movie star, pack a wide-brimmed straw hat, which gives you extra protection and pairs well with almost every outfit.

Couple drinking wine al fresco

Shield your eyes from the sun and avoid squinting in all of your pictures by packing at least one pair of sunglasses for your Mediterranean cruise. If you want to look extra stylish, bring an additional pair and change up your look every couple of days.

Comfortable walking shoes

Couple wandering around the historic site of Pompeii

You’d be surprised at how much walking you end up doing on a Mediterranean cruise, as you stroll around charming towns and historic cities. However, many streets in Europe are made up of uneven cobblestones, so walking around in flip-flops or heels can be painful.

Pack at least one pair of comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers or supported flats, that will keep your feet happy and healthy throughout your vacation.

For days spent by the pool or at the beach, pack a pair of sandals, flip flops, or water shoes that won’t be ruined if they get a little sand or water on them.

Sweater or light jacket

Couple sightseeing on a cruise veranda

If you’re sailing in the summer, the Mediterranean Sea is usually calm with warm breezes at night. During the spring and fall seasons, the wind cools down and the evenings are chillier.

Bring a light cardigan or stylish jacket to wear when you’re spending time at any of the ship’s outdoor areas, such as your private veranda, the Lawn Club, or the Rooftop Garden on Celebrity Edge and Apex.

Scarf or pashmina

Couple walking the streets of Barcelona

A scarf or pashmina is also a must when cruising around the Mediterranean. Not only is it an easy solution for when the weather is colder, it’s also important if you plan on visiting European churches, since many of them require female visitors to cover up their shoulders in order to go inside.

If you happen to be wearing a tank top or spaghetti-strap dress, a light scarf draped over your shoulders will work, so make sure to bring one along in your day pack during port days.

Dinner and evening clothes

Couple in semi formal wear walking the streets of Venice

For evenings on board or on a cruise with overnight stays in port, pack a few dressier outfits. For women, a maxi dress or a fashionable top paired with pants and a skirt are great options. For men, smart pants with a short-sleeve sport shirt or button-down shirt work well.

While our dress code for dinner in the main dining room and specialty restaurants is flexible, we do have a couple of restrictions that you should keep in mind when thinking about what to pack for a Mediterranean cruise.

T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps, and pool wear are not allowed in the Main Restaurant or specialty restaurants at any time. In addition, shorts and flip-flops are not allowed during the evening hours onboard.

Guests hanging out at night ondeck Celebrity

For “Evening Chic” nights, you’re encouraged to dress up. If you plan on attending one of our Evening Chic dinners, the dress code for women allows for cocktail dresses, skirts, pants, or designer jeans with an elegant top, while men can wear pants or designer jeans with a dress shirt, button-down, or sweater.

Evening shoes

Now that you have taken care of your dinner attire, don’t forget about your shoes! Women should pack heels or dressier sandals, while men should make sure to include at least one pair of smart shoes in their suitcase.

Backpack or handbag

Aside from all of your clothes, it’s important to pack one backpack or handbag for your Mediterranean cruise. A backpack is essential for days in port, when you’ll be off exploring European towns and cities and will need to carry things like your wallet, passport, phone, clothing items (sweater or pashmina), and camera.

People in formal wear eating dinner

The easiest way to dress up an outfit is by adding an accessory. Don’t forget to pack a few pieces of jewelry, like your favorite pair of earrings or a statement necklace, for days and nights when you want to take your look up a notch. Rest easy knowing that all of our staterooms and suites have a safe, where you’ll be able to store your valuables.

Lightweight jacket

If you’re traveling during the shoulder season, pack a lightweight jacket. Pick one that can be easily stored in your backpack or bag during shore excursions—preferably in a fabric that won’t wrinkle—so you can put it on in case the weather turns.

The onboard pharmacy doesn’t fill prescriptions, so make sure to bring enough of your medications for the length of your cruise. It’s also smart to pack first aid essentials such as bandaids, pain relief medications, anti-nausea medicine, and upset stomach relief.

Phone and phone charger

Couple taking a selfie in the streets of Rhodes

Buying an extra phone charger and packing it in your suitcase before your cruise is a smart way to make sure you can snap all of those incredible vacation pictures and upload them to your social media accounts.

Other travel essentials

Aside from all the recommendations above, don’t forget to pack other essentials such as underwear, socks, pajamas, cosmetics, wallet, passport, and cash.

Woman carrying a camera with Partenon temple as backdrop

Last but not least, pack a good camera. Sure, your phone can do the trick, but you might want to get even better pictures of the beauty of the Mediterranean coast and all of its picturesque sights.

How can I dress like a local while traveling around the Mediterranean?

If you don’t want to stand out as a tourist during your cruise around Europe , here are a few suggestions on what to wear during a Mediterranean cruise.

Couple in semi formal wear walking casually in Amalfi Coast

During the day, there’s plenty of room to have fun with your clothes. When considering Mediterranean style, focus on items that will look cool but comfortable in your surroundings. Think linen pants and shirts, cotton sundresses, espadrilles, straw hats, and leather sandals.

At night, many Europeans like to dress up, so if you’re planning on having dinner in port, remember to leave the sneakers and tank tops in the closet and choose a more smart look. For ladies, a cocktail dress or gauzy dress are solid options, while men should consider pairing slacks with a nice button-down shirt.

What should I pack for a 7-night Mediterranean cruise?

Couple wearing comfortable clothes while touring Mykonos

Most of our cruises around the Mediterranean last at least 7 nights, so plan on packing enough clothes to last you throughout your trip. At the same time, try not to overpack and bring items you can wear on multiple days.

Shoes are an easy accessory that can do double duty throughout your vacation. Pack a pair of comfortable sandals or walking shoes, beach sandals, and a dressier pair of shoes and you should be fine for a weeklong journey.

Couple touring the lemon farms in Sorrento

Pants, shorts, and skirts are also quite versatile and can be worn more than once, so make sure to pack these items in neutral colors that can be paired with different kinds of tops throughout your trip.

Accessories go a long way. Adding a pair of earrings or a statement necklace can make a casual day look perfect for evenings.

What should I pack for a Mediterranean cruise in the summer?

Couple drinking cocktails at a beach

This packing list is a great guideline for what to pack for a Mediterranean cruise during the summer. If you’re traveling during the high summer season, keep in mind that the weather can get quite hot, so make sure to bring a number of warm weather essentials such as sunscreen, lightweight clothes, a sun hat, and plenty of swimsuits.

World’s oldest known lipstick found in Iran — a country that banned makeup

mediterranean cruise october weather

Beauty trends come and go, but one thing has been a makeup mainstay for millennia: deep red lipstick. Women — and, yes, men too — have painted their faces with this hue since the start of civilization.

Now, archaeologists have identified the oldest known physical example of lipstick. Carbon dated to between 1936 and 1687 B.C., the analyzed contents of a small stone vial from Iran are a Bronze Age form of dark red lipstick that was probably applied with a brush.

“It is important to note that in the present state of knowledge, we hypothesize a lip-paint, rather than a solid lipstick,” Massimo Vidale , one of seven scientists who studied the substance, said in an email.

Looking very much like a modern tube of lipstick, the cylindrical container carrying the suspected lip paint was unearthed in 2001 from a 3rd millennium B.C. graveyard near the Halil River in Kerman Province, in southeastern Iran. Vidale and his team of researchers recently examined the container and published their findings last month in a study in Scientific Reports.

“It is always a sudden revelation,” said Vidale, a professor of archaeology at the University of Padua in Italy. “Even more, because the substance under our eyes matched perfectly with the very unusual form of the fine stone container, so close to the lipstick cases of our days.”

It’s ironic that the first known lipstick specimen was found in Iran, a country that banned cosmetics like lipstick and nail polish following the 1979 Islamic revolution. Though restrictions have been relaxed, many women — including government workers and medical students — are still prohibited from wearing makeup.

Vidale said the vial’s contents were in powder form due to dehydration after more than 3,700 years. Under the microscope, dark pigments were clearly visible, indicating the original product was an “intense red color,” the team reported in the study.

Using an environmental scanning electron microscope, the scientists were able to identify the makeup’s makeup. It features a large amount of hematite, a ferric oxide mineral whose name is derived from the Greek word for “blood” because of its red color. The contents also include vegetable oils and waxes, which are found in today’s lipstick as well.

“Combined together, this is exactly what one would expect in a modern lipstick,” Vidale wrote.

The use of lipstick dates back more than 5,500 years. According to ancient texts, Queen Puabi (also known as Shub-Ad) of Ur in Mesopotamia was the first to apply coloring to her mouth. The Sumerian sovereign apparently used a mixture of white lead and crushed red rocks around 3500 B.C. to rouge her lips, according to a 2006 paper by Sarah Schaffer, published by Harvard University. How that toxic cosmetic impacted the queen’s health is not known since much of her life remains a mystery.

Ancient Egyptians were also known to use lipstick for ceremonial, funerary and everyday purposes. A famous illustration from around 1150 B.C. shows a woman anointing her lips with what could be makeup. Known as Turin Papyrus 55001 , the drawing depicts a young Egyptian with a brush in one hand while the other holds a mirror and what appears to be “a thin, round-bottomed cylindrical cosmetic vial,” similar and size and shape to the Iranian container, according to the Scientific Reports article.

Vidale and his fellow researchers, whose study of the lipstick was supported by the universities of Tehran and Padua and the International Association for Mediterranean and Oriental Studies in Rome, became interested in the vial when team member Nasir Eskandari spotted it in the collection of the Jiroft Archaeological Museum in Iran. At the time, its purpose was unknown. The container was originally unearthed when the Halil River flooded ancient graveyards in 2001 and exposed numerous artifacts. Many items were looted but then recovered by Iranian security forces.

Measuring approximately two inches tall by three-quarters of an inch wide, the stone vial is slightly smaller than a modern tube of lipstick. The hand-carved container is made of chlorite and includes a hole on the top for extracting the contents. Its chiseled features give it the appearance of a marsh reed — offering a clue to its purpose.

“Because of its shape, mimicking a segment of a marsh cane, it is very thin and easy to handle,” Vidale told The Washington Post. “At the time, people used common cane segments as cases or receptacles, but this one is made of a prestigious stone.”

The vial is believed to have been used by the Jiroft culture . This Bronze Age civilization was unknown until the 2001 graveyard flooding. Its capital is thought to have been the city-state of Marhaši , which is mentioned in ancient texts but has yet to be located.

“What we know today is that this was an advanced Mesopotamian-like civilization, a major player in long-distance trade and military ventures, which used its own writing system and was ruled by large cities and powerful, authoritative rulers,” Vidale said. “The rest is slowly emerging from new excavations.”

Exactly how this lipstick was used and by whom is not known. Since the vial was buried in a grave, Vidale speculated that it may have been part of funeral rituals.

“We are groping in the dark here,” he wrote. “We can assume that the dead were adorned for their final journey, but also that cosmetics were important personal possessions of daily use, and that, upon an individual’s death, they could not be used by others.”

The discovery demonstrates to Vidale and his team how closely modern society resembles so-called primitive civilizations of long ago.

“The evidence supports a simple point: the world of the early Bronze age, when the first cities became the political hubs of powerful and hierarchic states, was already very, very similar to our one,” he wrote.
