1Cover Travel Insurance

Our verdict: unlimited cover for both overseas medical expenses and trip cancellation are a big plus but you'll want to check the fine print if you're after covid-19 cover..

In this guide

Summary of 1Cover's Comprehensive policy

How does 1cover travel insurance cover covid-19, what policies does 1cover offer, here's a breakdown of 1cover travel insurance features, standard features, optional add-on, how to make a 1cover travel insurance claim, here's the bottom line about 1cover travel insurance, frequently asked questions, compare your travel insurance quotes.

Destinations

  • 1Cover Travel Insurance offers unlimited cover for both trip cancellation and overseas medical expenses - The ultimate peace of mind when planning a holiday
  • Enjoy up to $5,000,000 personal liability cover when you choose 1Cover Travel Insurance. Many other providers cover much less than this.
  • This provider's COVID-19 cover doesn't extend to cancellation costs. If you get sick before or during your trip, you'll need to rely on your travel provider for any refunds.

Compare other options

Table updated November 2022

1Cover offers some cover for pandemic-related expenses but not everything you might need. All its policies cover overseas medical claims related to COVID-19 if you test positive and require emergency medical treatment. This includes:

  • Overseas hospital medical treatment
  • Ambulance transportation
  • Repatriation back to Australia

Where 1Cover falls short is with its cancellation cover. If you catch COVID-19 before you depart for your holiday or during your trip and need to cancel, you're out of luck here. This includes additional costs such as PCR tests or quarantine costs.

If you think you'll need more than overseas medical cover for COVID-19, we've compared all the providers that offer cover for pandemic-related expenses .

1Cover has seven different plans available to fi th the needs of a wide variety of travellers. Comprehensive, Essentials, Medical Only, Domestic and Already Overseas cover single trips while International Frequent Traveller and Domestic Frequent Traveller are annual policies that can cover multiple trips over the year.

This insurance is underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd's. It comes with a cooling-off period and choice of standard excess .

The cooling-off period is 14 days and allows you to cancel your policy for a full refund provided you haven't started travelling or made a claim. All policies have a standard $200 excess which will be an out-of-pocket expense if you need to make a claim for an insured event . This excess can be reduced to $100 by paying extra on your policy.

These are some of the features that 1Cover will cover if something goes amiss on your trip. Some of these benefits are only available for certain levels of cover (e.g. the Comprehensive policy vs Essentials).

  • Additional accommodation and travel expenses
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits
  • Domestic pets and services
  • Hospital cash allowance
  • Loss of income
  • Luggage and personal effects
  • Overseas emergency medical assistance
  • Permanent disability
  • Rental vehicle insurance excess
  • Resumption of journey

1Cover offers three different add-on packs to give your travel insurance policy more flexibility. Not all plans are eligible to add on these packs.

  • Cruise pack. Get cover for your trip on the high seas. This pack includes cruise-specific cover for things like missed port connections and cancelled prepaid shore excursions.
  • High value items. If you're travelling with expensive gear that costs above 1Cover's limits, you have the option to take out extra cover in case your item is lost, stolen or damaged.
  • Rental vehicle insurance excess. If your policy includes rental car excess cover, you can increase the cover amount for a bit more money.
  • Winter pack. A must if your trip involves things like skiing or snowboarding . Get cover for unexpected accidents on the slopes and if you need emergency evacuation. This is only available for those 64 years and under.

1Cover Travel Insurance has some general exclusions listed in its Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) that you should be clear on. These include claims arising from:

  • Motorcycle or scooter accidents where the driver doesn't hold a valid motorcycle license
  • Any act of war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection or taking of power by the military
  • Travel to or remaining in a country with a warning risk rating of 'Do Not Travel'
  • Mandatory quarantine, lockdown, curfew, or isolation orders
  • Pregnancy after the 24th week or any previously identified complications unless approved by 1Cover
  • Travel booked or undertaken against the advice of a medical adviser
  • Elective surgery or treatment
  • A pre-existing medical condition not approved by 1Cover
  • You being under the influence of any intoxicating liquor or drugs except those prescribed by a medical adviser
  • Quad biking, mountaineering or rock climbing using ropes or climbing equipment
  • Suicide or attempted suicide, physical, mental or emotional exhaustion
  • Hiking or trekking within an altitude limit above 3500 metres (including Everest base camp )

Make sure you review 1Cover's PDS for a detailed breakdown of general exclusions .

You can submit your claim by downloading a claim form online and posting it to PO Box 6798, Baulkham Hills, NSW 2153.

Alternatively, you can submit a claim online by following these steps:

  • Head to https://www.1cover.com.au/online-claim-form/
  • Enter your policy number, email and date of birth to log in
  • Complete your claim details by answering all sections
  • Upload any documents to support your claim
  • Submit, and you should hear back within 10 business days

With over 1.5 million customers, 1Cover is among the most well-known insurers in Australia. Some of the standouts of 1Cover travel insurance include emergency assistance anywhere in the world, free cover for the kids, no age limits and cover for certain pre-existing medical conditions.

Where 1Cover might be lacking for you can be found in the fine print. While COVID-19 overseas medical expenses are covered, cancellation costs are not. This might be sufficient if your travel arrangements are flexible and can be refunded but for some, that risk might be too great to take on. Senior travellers should also be wary. If you're aged 80 years or older, a $3,000 excess applies for any claims associated with an injury, illness or medical condition.

If you're not quite sure about 1Cover, you can compare other travel insurance companies here .

How does 1Cover handle pre-existing conditions?

Like most insurers, you will usually need to disclose any pre-existing conditions when you apply for cover. However, 1Cover has 35 pre-existing conditions which they automatically cover. Under certain conditions, this can include diabetes , epilepsy, pernicious anaemia and asthma. Be sure to read their product disclosure statement before deciding whether or not you need to disclose information for pre-existing medical conditions.

Do 1Cover policies cover cruises?

A cruise pack add-on is available when you buy any 1Cover travel insurance plan, except Essentials and Medical Only plans. When you purchase cruise cover as an add on, you'll get cover for services like:

  • Cabin confinement
  • Prepaid shore excursions cancellation
  • Missed cruise departure
  • Missed port cover
  • Formal attire cover
  • Formal attire delay allowance

Can I get travel insurance immediately?

Yes, 1Cover lets you get a quote and apply for insurance all online. This means you can be covered straight away for any upcoming travel plans.

If you are already overseas , 1Cover can also provide you with travel insurance but coverage doesn't start until 72 hours from the start date on your Certificate of Insurance.

We are booked on a cruise around Australia in October for one month and looking for travel insurance that covers all our needs and Covid.

Please visit our guide to COVID travel insurance . You’ll be able to compare a range of insurance providers that include COVID-19 medical expenses.

Make sure to read the PDS of each provider before signing up with the one that meets your needs.

What are the dollar limits on luggage lost by airlines?

Thanks for getting in touch! International cover for luggage and personal effects is $5,000 at the time of writing, with a $100 excess. However, this is for multi trip insurance only.

As it says on ther website, “when we receive a personal belongings claim, you have to provide proof of ownership for the lost or stolen items. We realise that policy holders cannot always provide receipts for each and every item, but you’ll still have to provide evidence of ownership. We can accept photographic evidence, warranty cards, manuals, receipts, bank or credit card statements as proof of ownership.”

Hope this was helpful. Don’t hesitate to message us back if you have more questions.

Best, Nikki

I am going to England/Europe in April. I am just enquiring who is the underwriter for 1Cover

Hi Christine,

Thank you for reaching out to finder.

This insurance is underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s. Hope this helps!

I would like a quote for travel insurance for my son. He is 23yrs old, Australian departing Japan on November 6, arriving in the USA on the same day. Not sure of when he will be returning home but presume it will be at least 6 months. He will be skiing while in the USA. Is this something you can help me with?

Avatar

Hello Kristie,

Thank you for your comment.

We apologize for not being able to answer this comment before your son left for the USA. Anyway, as for the quote for the travel insurance, since your son is already overseas, he could have gotten a quote directly from 1Cover Already Overseas Travel Insurance by clicking the Get Quote button.

As for the other options of getting travel insurance back home, he may check our list of overseas travel insurance . It has the list of the insurers (2 insurers) that your son may take and get a quote directly while overseas. Also, kindly read the tips on how to go about getting insurance while overseas for your son.

Please make sure to read the eligibility criteria, features, and details of the policy, as well as the relevant Product Disclosure Statement PDS/T&C’s of the policy before making a decision and consider whether the product is right for you. If necessary, speak to the insurance brand to verify any details.

Should you wish to have real-time answers to your questions, try our chatbox on the lower right corner of our page.

Regards, Jhezelyn

Cruise from Australia visiting Singapore Thailand Vietnam Cambodia Malaysia . Dates 1st — 27rh Nov 2019. 1 person age: 76.

Thanks for leaving a question on Finder.

If you a looking for travel insurance for a cruise you will need cruise cover. You can compare cruise policies using our comparison table. Just press the “Get quote” button to request free quotations.

When deciding on which policy you’ll want to consider a policy that covers any pre-existing medical conditions that you have. Once you find a policy that you prefer, you can go through to the provider’s page and get in touch with them in regards to any pre-existing medical conditions that you have. Some benefits you may look for include:

  • Unlimited medical benefits
  • Cancellation cover that covers the cost of your trip
  • An excess that you are okay with paying e.g. you may have to pay an excess of $100 when you claim

Please send me a message if you need anything else. :)

Cheers, Joel

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. AVOID!!! Scum bags

AVOID!!! Had to return home urgently due to a medical reason and only claimed for accommodation losses as I was in pain and couldn’t deal with claiming everything else. They gave me a run around for 7 weeks continually asking for extra information. I had to go to the doctor on 3 different occasions at $85 per visit just to get a new piece of information each time. They finally approved the claim and halved the amount because the booking made for 2 people even though it was only me staying. When booking through booking.com I enter 1 person and it always puts the booking through as 2. 1cover are absolute scum and I will never be using them again after 15 years of only using them.

They tell you sublimits apply in a quote, but don't tell you what the sublimits are. They tell you to check the PDS, but don't tell you where – it's buried in the 70 page document.

There When Needed The Most

I am forever indebted to 1Cover. Thank you for being there for me and my family in our darkest hours. I almost lost the love of my life and I can't speak highly enough of the responsiveness and reassurance that the 1Cover emergency team provided.

Keep all bookings, receipts and confirmations

My husband is 76 and our travel insurance was reasonable. We made a claim on our return for a cancelled leg of our trip due to illness. Our initial submission was what we thought was sufficient information. Their reply requested considerably more WITH EVIDENCE which was reasonable. After we had supplied everything, our claim was processed and we received the refund we expected. Make sure you keep all bookings, receipts and confirmations for possible future claims. Also, if you need to see a doctor overseas, obtain your medical report as proof of your visit. This becomes much harder back home due to privacy issues.

Claim denied after my boss died and I had to get back to make sure the company continued and I still had an income. i.e. Trip cancelled for unforseen reasons beyond anyone's control. And now looking at the array of "We will not pay for" clauses I would say there's more excluded than covered.

Date of experience : 18 November 2023

1cover will use small print to avoid paying out.

With all the other insurance companies out there, I'd recommend going with anyone but 1cover. If you decided for whatever reason that you want to roll they dice with these guys, just read the small print very, very carefully as they will not payout in the event you need them. Avoid em and go with literally anyone else.

Extremely poor customer service

I made a claim on our return for a cancelled leg of our trip due to weather. Our initial submission was what we thought was sufficient information. Their reply requested considerably more WITH EVIDENCE which was unreasonable. After we had supplied everything, our claim was still not processed. Make sure you keep all documentations and get it in writing from the company why the cancellation happened. After many weeks of frustration I gave up. With all the other insurance companies out there, I'd recommend going with anyone but 1Cover. I have never had a travel claim and this experience has had me rethinking travel insurance altogether. It seems 1 Cover are only interested in taking the premium. If you decide for whatever reason to incur with 1 Cover, just read the small print very, very carefully as they will not payout in the event you need them. Also they are no longer affiliated with Lloyds. Avoid them and go with literally anyone else.

Had an extremely distressed time after my connecting flight was delayed causing me to miss my end route flight. 1 cover was easy to get through to when they eventually could not get my luggage i needed for the wedding i was attending. They were quick at reimbursing funds and told us exactly what we needed for the claim. No fuss!

Date of experience : 22 January 2022

The customer service is terrible

The customer service is terrible. I haven't even yet traveled but want to add a day onto my insurance. Cannot talk directly to a human but have to go through their website which does not allow me to alter my days even though they say I can. Have to email and they say to expect a callback. Have received two voice messages saying they have called me. I want to talk directly to someone. Very frustrating and wish I had gone elsewhere.

Date of experience : 07 March 2023

Professional Service, Claim Paid No Problem

You never know how good insurance is until you have to make a claim! 1Cover responded to us with clear communications within their prescribed timeframe and our payout was made within 15 days. Thanks so much 1Cover.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

I subm itted a claim and I showed how much came out in AUD. However 1Cover used their own 'exhange rate' and reduced it massively. I had to submit the same information at least 3 times and was treated like my claim was not legitimate. The excess on every seperate claim is also criminal. I will not longer take out Travel Insurance and will just use the complimentary Credit Crad Insurance. It is not worth the headache or the money

I chose 1Cover for cruise travel insurance. I read the PDS and was happy with the extra things they cover in comparison to other cruise travel insurance policies. I am glad I read and compared policies because our original cruise itinerary was changed due to the weather. I claimed 3 missed ports. The process was quick and easy and could be done using my mobile phone meaning I didn't need to wait until I got home. My claim was processed and accepted within 48 hours and payment into my account within 2 working days. I highly recommend using 1Cover

1Cover Travel Insurance

1cover make it impossible to make a claim.

Airline lost my luggage. 1Cover wanted Proof of travel arrangements (eg. original flight itinerary showing departing and returning flights, accommodation invoice for placed you stayed at, etc.) List and Proof of purchase for all of the original items that were lost, stolen or damaged (e.g. receipts/bank statements confirming the purchase date and price) Proof of Loss (i.e. police report, report to hotel, airline etc.) Compensation letter from the airline, as to how much they are reimbursing you for losing your luggage. Just impossible to provide all the above.

Breast cancer claim denied from a genuine family

We had a genuine claim for my wife’s breast cancer knocked back and not one call to explain why ??? Very poor communication and service !! Would NOT recommend !

Good coverage

Good price and good coverage. I never claim so I don’t know about claim handling.

Be very careful if considering 1Cover

Would NOT recommend. Be very very careful if considering the company. We made a claim on a lost item and were made to feel like criminals by what in my opinion was a heartless, cold well trained expert at finding pinholes using fine print policy wording to avoid paying out on a minor claim. Thank goodness nothing serious happened on our trip. I feel they would have fought every inch of the way to to avoid any kind of claim. Dodged a bullet.

ICover , does it all

Have used these guys for all our O.S. Travel , tried others many years ago, but found issues in the “small print” When we can travel again I suggest using 1Cover, includes pet cover. They are the best.

What in the world

They did the job

Overall good cost for benefits provided.

Go to for travel insurance with reasonable rates with good coverage. Last trip went to get insurance once landed and realised only covered if you haven’t left home which is a bummer. Seems the same for all insurance providers would be good to have this option.

Good, affordable cover for multi-trip travel

Good policies for year round travel (expensive if just using for a one off trip). Be careful to read disclaimers however (eg flight being moved by airline did not count as a reason to receive re-imbursement for subsequent missed flights).

Helped us with an accident overseas.

Have had to claim with this company whilst overseas and in an accident. Could not believe how quickly they helped us and paid for things and reimbursed us. Even through the middle of the night!

False trade practice by travel insurer.

This insurer made it really difficult for me to claim a trip I couldn't go because of a death in my family. They asked for evidence and I provided a medical letter from a cancer Oncology ward at a major hospital and they still required more. That to me is dishonest and false trade practice as the letter should be enough. I would never insure through them again. For anyone considering travel insurance make sure you ask them exactly what proof you need before booking and becoming a member. If it sounds too tricky or complicated don't join.

Affordable, reliable, easy to purchase

1 Cover's website was very easy to use, and made purchasing insurance a breeze. The cover was comprehensive, allowing me to purchase extras like ski insurance, and was very cost effective. I would definitely recommend this insurance provider.

Travel insurance.

No cover for pandemics of course.

Always have room for improvement.

Policies can be more flexible and less expensive.

Competitive premiums and great customer service

They cover you when you have previous medical conditions, without charging.

It’s been good for me at my age plus it's cheap

My Experience with 1Cover Travel Insurance: A Honest Review

By knbbs-sharer.

reviews 1cover travel insurance

Everyone loves to travel, whether it’s for business or personal reasons. And when it comes to traveling, nothing can be better than having travel insurance. Simply because at times certain things go wrong, and it’s better to be prepared beforehand than to face the consequences later. As a passionate traveler myself, I have tried a number of insurance services in the past, and one that’s been on top of my list is 1Cover Travel Insurance.

Here is my honest opinion and review of 1Cover Travel Insurance, and what makes them stand out from their competitors:

The first thing that attracted me to 1Cover Travel Insurance was the extensive coverage they offer. Right from medical emergencies to travel postponements, they have policies that cover almost everything, giving me complete peace of mind. It’s not just about the breadth; 1Cover Travel Insurance has some of the highest upper limits for existing policy coverage, with medical coverage limits up to $20 million per traveler. This means that in the case of an emergency, chances are 1Cover Travel Insurance has you covered.

Ease of Purchasing

Purchasing travel insurance can be an overwhelming task, with so many policies to choose from. However, with 1Cover Travel Insurance, the process is quite simple. From finding the most appropriate plan for your needs to getting your policy instantly, their website is user-friendly and easy to navigate. Another convenient feature is that they cater to the needs of frequent travelers who can go for annual travel insurance plans. You only have to make the decision once a year, and you can travel with the peace of mind that you are covered throughout the year.

Customer Service

No matter how good a product is, if the

customer service is poor, the whole experience becomes extremely frustrating. 1Cover Travel Insurance has an efficient and helpful customer support team that’s there to assist you 24×7. Whether you need to make changes to your existing policy or need help while making a claim, their team is always there for you.

Claim Process

I believe the claim process is what sets apart good insurance services from the rest. 1Cover Travel Insurance has impressed me with their hassle-free and straightforward claims process. Submitting a claim is a breeze with all the required forms available online. What’s more, their turnaround time for settling claims is within seven business days, which is impressive.

In conclusion, 1Cover Travel Insurance has given me a pleasant experience of traveling, worry-free. From extensive coverage to swift claims processing, their services have exceeded my expectations. If you plan to travel soon, I highly recommend you consider 1Cover Travel Insurance for your insurance needs.

Fact checked

Since its founding almost 20 years ago, 1Cover Travel Insurance has provided policies to more than 1. 5 million travellers and has become one of the country’s industry leaders. The company has offices in Sydney and Brisbane, with a strong presence in Australia and across the ditch in New Zealand.

The beauty of finding out about 1Cover’s policies with Savvy is that you can compare and contrast all the different variables to help you find the best deal. That includes weighing the claim limits, inclusions, exclusions and excesses so you can pick the most suitable coverage for your trip.

More about 1Cover Travel Insurance

What travel insurance policies does 1cover offer.

1Cover offers a range of travel insurance policies, including:

  • Comprehensive: this policy includes unlimited coverage for cancellation fees, lost deposits and overseas medical treatment, as well as higher claim limits on benefits such as personal liability, stolen cash, the excess on a rental car and additional expenses.
  • Essentials: for those travelling on a tight budget, the essentials policy provides unlimited cover for medical treatment abroad and limited cover for cancellation and lost or damaged luggage. This policy omits some of the fringe benefits such as rental car excesses, extra accommodation costs and delays to your trip.
  • Medical-Only: this policy only covers you for medical expenses abroad (as well as personal liability) and is considerably cheaper than some of 1Cover’s other travel insurance products.
  • Domestic: taking a trip across Australia or visiting the family in another capital city? 1Cover offers a domestic travel insurance policy which covers unlimited cancellation costs, lost or damaged luggage, the excess on a hire car and extra accommodation or travel costs.
  • Already Overseas: if you’ve forgotten to take out travel insurance and already touched down at your destination, 1Cover offers a policy tailored to those already overseas . Keep in mind the policy has a 72-hour cooling-off period, meaning you won’t be covered until your policy kicks in.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: taking a few trips overseas throughout the year? You can take out one policy to cover you for multiple holidays across 12 months, provided they’re within 1Cover’s limits, which are between 21 and 90 days.

Whether you're just taking a short trip across Australia or planning a trip to New Zealand , it's always a good idea to use Savvy to compare domestic and international travel insurance products before you buy.

What optional extras are available through 1Cover?

1Cover, like many other travel insurers, provides optional extras for both international and domestic holidays. These include:

  • Ski and winter sports cover: if you plan on doing any winter sports on your holiday, this policy covers you in case of an emergency or an accident occurs on the slopes. Those over 65 aren’t eligible for this add-on, however.
  • Cruise cover: setting sail on a cruise holiday ?  This plan protects you if your cruise line cancels a pre-paid shore excursion or a missed port connection.
  • Your choice of excess: there is a mandatory excess of $200 to pay before your insurance company can pay anything if you file a claim, which applies to all policies. However, with an optional $100 premium, you may lower your excess to $100.
  • Rental vehicle excess cover: you can pay a little more to boost the coverage for your hire car if your insurance policy contains cover for its excess.
  • Valuables cover: this add-on covers you in the event your valuables are stolen, damaged or go missing, such as cameras, laptops, mobile phones, and jewellery.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through 1Cover?

It’s important you’re across the different exclusions before buying your travel insurance. Some of the general exclusions on 1Cover’s policies include:

  • Acting recklessly or illegally
  • Leaving your belongings unattended or unsecured
  • Willingly travelling to a country with a ‘do not travel’ warning against it
  • Accidents caused by alcohol or drug consumption
  • Claims relating to obtaining certain travel documents such as visas or passports
  • Loss of enjoyment or a potential business opportunity

If you’ve found a policy that draws your eye, make sure you review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of 1Cover Travel Insurance

What we like, coverage for covid-19 costs.

Unlike a handful of travel insurance companies, 1Cover provides coverage for a range of COVID-19-related expenses such as unlimited medical expenses, ambulance rides or repatriation back to Australia if you fall gravely ill.

Higher legal liability cover

While some insurers offer personal liability coverage around the $1 to $2 million mark, 1Cover offers $5 million claim limits across all their policies.

24/7 support

1Cover allows you to get in touch with their support team any time day or night, whether you suffer a medical emergency and need your expenses paid or are embroiled in another unexpected event.

What we don't like

Restrictive age limits.

If you’re taking out a travel insurance policy and you’re over the age of 65 , your options will be more limited. Policies for those already overseas and frequent travellers are restricted to those under 64, while essentials and medical-only plans are limited to those under 74.

Tight conditions on pre-existing medical issues

The travel insurance packages from 1Cover include coverage for pre-existing conditions such as asthma and diabetes at no additional cost. However, you'll need a medical examination to be covered if you have a serious medical condition, such as multiple sclerosis or a heart issue.

Pay extra to take a cruise

If you’re looking to sail the high seas on a luxury liner, you’ll need to take out additional cover on your standard travel insurance policy.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about 1Cover Travel Insurance

1Cover allows you to make a claim on your travel insurance policy day or night online through their website. If you need to make a claim, these are the steps you’ll need to follow:

  • Log into the claim portal and take up to ten minutes to complete the form
  • Gather your supporting documents, such as receipts or medical reports, and attach them to your claim

Once you’ve submitted your claim, 1Cover will confirm your claim with an email. It can then take up to ten business days for a claim to be processed and a support person to reach out if they have any extra questions.

Yes – 1Cover’s travel Insurance policies offer coverage for pregnant travellers up to their 24th week of gestation if they’re expecting only one child or their 19th week if they have multiple children on the way. While you’re covered for any emergency medical expenses or cancellation costs, you won’t be covered for childbirth or the care of a newborn baby.

There’s no such thing as an average cost of travel insurance , as the price of your premium depends on a stack of variables. These can include:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your chosen destination (for example, a trip to America costs more than a holiday to New Zealand because of the lack of universal healthcare)
  • The level of coverage you buy
  • Any optional extras you need
  • Pre-existing medical conditions you need to disclose
  • The policy excess you choose
  • The type of insurer and insurance policy you buy

Multi-trip travel insurance policies cover you for several holidays taken over 12 months, while single-trip policies only protect you on one holiday. One-way trips are altogether different and only offer you coverage if you haven’t yet booked a return ticket back to Australia.

  • Our pricing review compares 1Cover Travel Insurance to other popular products offered by AA, AMI and Southern Cross.
  • 1Cover Travel Insurance is widely popular, insuring thousands of New Zealanders every year who travel overseas. But it may not be right for you, and we have put together this guide to outline the most important features.
  • We update our example pricing every 90 days, with an extensive number of policies reviewed in our travel insurance comparison guide .

1Cover Travel Insurance in 10 Points

1cover travel insurance pros and cons.

  • Four Must-Know 1Cover Travel Insurance Facts

1Cover Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Travel insurance basics - what you need, and why, what should travel insurance cover.

  • Medical expenses -   should you get sick or have an accident, all of your medical costs will be taken care of.
  • Lost, damaged and stolen  items  - if something is lost, stolen or damaged, you will be paid out up to a reasonable amount
  • Cancellation - if you book your travel arrangements and then get ill, you can claim on the non-refundable costs
  • D isruption - if you need to return home, experienced delayed flights or missed connections, you will be compensated
  • Be aware - many travel insurance policies limit almost EVERYTHING. For example, the maximum cover of individual items is usually $1,500 to $2,500, unless you specify extra cover and pay additional costs.
  • This means that if you lose a $5,000 watch or $3,000 handbag, the most you will be able to claim is the limit of the policy, unless you insure the items separately.

Do I need travel insurance?

Cover for medical bills is the most important benefit of travel insurance.

  • Travel Insurance protects you from having to pay huge medical treatment and air-evacuation bills. As mentioned above, In many countries, hospitals and clinics won't treat a patient without pre-approval from an insurer. Having insurance in such situations could make a difference between life and death.
  • To limit the risk of a claim being denied, it is the responsibility of the person buying a policy to FULLY disclose all pre-existing medical conditions. This includes a condition that has been diagnosed, treated and/or investigated by medical practitioners.
  • Travel insurers never check customers' medical records before a claim. Only when a claim is made do they check. And they check in incredible detail.
  • Buying travel insurance should never be rushed - travellers with pre-existing conditions must tell the insurer, and check to make sure any claims that relate to that condition will be covered.

Is expensive travel insurance better than cheaper travel insurance?

1Cover NZ Travel Insurance Review

1. What does the policy cover?

  • Cancellation and Travel Disruption
  • Overseas Medical Assistance
  • Rental Car Excess
  • Luggage and Personal Effects

2. Is there anything that could stop me from being paid out for a claim

  • Cancellation before or during travel - Stuff reported a story where the costs of returning to New Zealand due to the death of a policyholder's mother was not covered, because there is no cover if the event was caused by a " pre-existing medical condition suffered by a Close Relative or any complications directly attributable to those conditions". If you have a sick relative that you already know about before you go on holiday, and need to return home because of that relative, it's unlikely you will be covered for the costs you incur for cancelling a trip or returning earlier.
  • Policy purchase and cover - your travel insurance and benefits generally start from the start of the policy (except for already overseas policies). For example, if you booked your trip in March, purchase 1Cover travel insurance in June and were set to travel in September, but had to cancel, you would be covered if there was  provision to claim
  • Resumption of Travel - if you are forced to return to New Zealand due to serious Injury, illness, disease or death of a close relative, you won't be covered to resume your travel overseas at a later date if you were away already for more than 50% of your time, or the total trip is less than 14 days in total. This means any policy issued for less than 14 days doesn't include this cover.

3. Is it expensive?

  • When compared to similar policies available from other insurers, 1Cover's insurance quotes were the cheapest for three of our example trips, and second-cheapest for another five. We compared  1Cover  Travel Insurance with AA, AMI and Southern Cross travel insurance policies.
  • The policy offers a range of benefits, some are superior to other insurers, but others are not. The table above details the cover.
  • On 22 March 2019, we obtained sample quotes for two travelling couples - two 35-year-olds, and two 70-year-olds. The overseas cover we sourced quotes for four trips - 7 days in Australia, 2 weeks in Bali, 2 weeks in the USA and 4 weeks in Europe. The results are presented below.

4. Who guarantees the policy?

5. does lloyd's sell other travel insurance in new zealand, 6. is there 24/7 support, how do i make a claim and how long does it take process a claim.

  • Emergency assistance is provided 24 hours/7 days a week by First Assistance   who operate an international assistance network.
  • Policyholders make a claim via the 1Cover  Travel Insurance website, over the phone, or via email. Claims must be made within 30 days of the date you return to New Zealand. It's best to claim as soon as you can, even if you are overseas.
  • Claims are assessed within 10 business days, and payments are made in New Zealand Dollars into a nominated bank account.

7. What about pre-existing medical conditions?

8. can i get a discount on the policy, 9. what are the alternatives that offer a similar level of cover, 10. what happens if my travel insurance claim is rejected.

  • Many claims are rejected every year by travel insurers all over New Zealand. It can cause misery and frustration, but in many cases the reason is justified.
  • If you are denied a claim and you feel the decision is wrong or not justified, you can take your complaint to the Financial Services Complaints Limited (FSCL) .
  • Travel insurance policies, in general, make up a large number of the complaints formally investigated by FSCL.
  • According to our research, after having their claims rejected people complained to the FSCL about the following topics:
  • The policyholder not receiving important information, or if information was received, it was ambiguous or poorly worded.
  • The policyholder failing to disclose certain information
  • The policyholder not understanding the insurance policy

1Cover NZ Travel Insurance Review

  • 1Cover offered the best quotes in our testing of elderly travel with no pre-existing medical conditions (compared to AA, AMI and Southern Cross).
  • For personal belongings, there is a generous $3,000 cover limit for computer/camera and $1,000 for phone/tablet, with each additional item limited to $750.
  • Cruise cover and ski cover are additional charges
  • There is no $0 excess option - this means you'll either pay $100 or $200 per claim.
  • No online or loyalty discounts, and coupon codes are rarely made available.
  • 1Cover Travel Insurance is a major player in New Zealand, and offers a level of c over consistent with that of other providers. The usual limitations and stipulations apply.
  • We compared the cover and policy costs to those in our full  travel insurance comparison  review.
  • Many other insurers offer similar cover of core benefits (medical, personal liability, personal items, dental etc) at a discount to the quotes we obtained from 1Cover.
  • We base this observation on a sample quotes for our two 35-year-old travellers visiting the Australia, USA, Bali or Europe.

  • Scooter and Moped: You need to hold a New Zealand Motorbike Licence or Drivers Licence (or if you're a passenger, the driver needs to have a valid licence valid for the country you are travelling in) AND the  Scooter or Moped has to have an engine size of 'less than 50cc'.
  • The policy is silent on whether or not you need to  wear a helmet to be covered.

Can I extend or upgrade my policy while I am travelling overseas?

  • If you need to extend before your policy has ended because you are staying away longer, 1Cover offers policy extensions, where applicable, but you will need to pYay for this.
  • You can apply to extend your policy by either getting in contact with 1Cover's call centre team, or alternatively you can log in to the Policy Manager. 1Cover states that extensions are not always available, but you will be made aware of this.

  • A bus line, airline, shipping line or rail authority you are travelling on, or that has accepted your fare or luggage and personal effects, is delayed.

Does 1Cover Travel Insurance cover rental vehicle excess?

  • This benefit means you can avoid paying for 'excess protection' or 'excess reduction' insurance when you rent a car
  • Usually, you will need to put a hold on your credit card.
  • If you have an incident, your credit card will be charged the car rental's excess fee. You will then need to claim this fee from 1Cover when you get back to New Zealand.

Hello Australian Travellers,

' class=

I think any insurance company would ask for documentation to prove that it is a valid claim.

Yes, what you feel is enough documentation doesn't matter. It's what the insurance company requires that you need to comply with. All companies are the same, they all have a list of things you need to provide to satisfy a claim and get a payout.

Insurance companies are not your friend. None of them want to pay unless they absolutely must.

It's not just 1Cover.

Take a deep breath, play along, give them what they want, and if you qualify- I'm sure they'll pay you.

They will all be the same, you won't find much difference at all when using other companies.
