Common Errors/Mistakes in English

Visited vs Have Visited vs Had Visited: How to Use Them Correctly

6 years ago 66.6K Views

Common Errors in English Sentences : Using correct tense an important part of every business communication as it reflects your personality, especially when you’re communicating with someone who is well-versed in English language.

Are you a non-native English speaker, confused between “visited vs. have visited”? This post will help you understand the grammar rules once and for all.

Using correct tense is an important part of every business communication as it reflects your personality, especially when you’re communicating with someone who is well-versed in the English language.

It’s quite common to find many non-native English users confusing “past tense” with “present perfect tense”.

So, let’s take a look at some examples below:

❎ I have visited the doctor this past week. ( wrong )

❎ Have you met your mother yesterday? ( wrong )

So, what do you think is wrong with these examples?

Explanation : This is a pretty common error in Asian countries where English communication is largely affected by their mother tongue. Many non-English languages carry grammar rules which can be very different from the grammar rules we follow in the English language.

In the English language, when you describe an event that occurs in the past, i.e. yesterday or last week, you essentially use the “past simple” tense of the verb.

In the examples above, “yesterday” and “this past week” are both “adverbs”, meaning they define the nature of the verb that precedes them.

In the first example, the speaker talks about an event (visiting the doctor) with information about its occurrence (this past week).

Please, note that the “timing of the event” (or time adverb) is of utmost importance here, which decides the “tense form” the verb must take in the sentence.

Here, “this past week” refers to an event that clearly occurred in the past. Therefore, the event itself (visiting the doctor) must take “the past simple tense”.

Hence, it would be right to express yourself in the following way.

I visited the doctor this past week.

Similarly, the correct version of the second example would be:

Did you visit your mother yesterday?

To make it even clearer for you, here’s how you should break the sentences to understand which tense they should take.

I + visited + the doctor + this past week

Visited = the “past simple tense” of the verb “visit”.

This past week = the adverb denoting “timing of the event”.

Know Your Adverbs

It’s important to know your adverbs well enough in order to form correct sentences, using the appropriate tense.

Let’s consider a few examples with different adverbs.

Now, Currently, Right Now, Today

You can use either present continuous or present perfect tense with these verbs. However, you can never use “past simple” with these.

For example, the following examples would sound plain stupid:

❎ He was unemployed currently. ( incorrect )

❎ He’s unemployed currently. ( correct )

❎ Was he sick right now? ( incorrect )

❎ Is he sick right now? ( correct )

❎ I came here today. ( incorrect )

❎ I’ve come here today. ( correct )

However, there are some “adverbs” that can take both “past tense” as well as “present perfect tense” depending on the context.

Here are Some Examples:

✅ Example #1: I have purchased a CD player recently. (present perfect tense)

✅ Example #2: I purchased that CD player recently. (past simple tense)

Oxford Dictionary defines “recently” as an adverb denoting “at a recent time” and “not long ago”.

Explanation:

In Example #1, we are using a perfect tense in order to name the action as the source of the present state. Whereas, in Example #2, we are using a past tense since the action is one of a sequence of past actions, a narrative.

Please, keep in mind the present perfect is a present tense, which makes a statement about the situation at the time of speaking.

However, the following example would be incorrect.

❎ I have purchased that CD recently.

This is because when you are talking about purchasing “that CD”, you have presumably purchased it in the past. Therefore, you should rather say, “I purchased that CD recently”.

Visited vs Had Visited

Believe it or not, many non-native English users find it hard to differentiate between past simple tense and past perfect tense. They often wonder if the two could be used interchangeably.

The truth is both these tenses offer different contexts to the event. Take a look at the following examples:

  • Example #1 : I visited my doctor yesterday.
  • Example #2 : I had visited my doctor yesterday.

Which of the above examples is correct?

Answer : The first one.

We use past tense when the time is specified, e.g. yesterday.

We use past perfect tense only when we refer to another event (a concurrent event) in the past. In other words, it must carry some context – “what happened after you visited the doctor yesterday?”

For example:

I had watched television yesterday when it was time to go to bed.✅ Activity in the past = “it was time”.

✅ Activity before the past = “had watched television”.

I had watched television yesterday, by the time my parents came back.

✅ Activity in the past = “my parents came back”.

In short, without any context to “the other activity” that was done after watching television, using “had watched” would be incorrect.

Therefore, if you only mean to mention “watching television” in the past, simply say, “I watched television yesterday”.

I hope this helps. Please, let me know if you have any questions.

visit visited visited

Perhaps no city along Texas’s border with Mexico has better epitomized what can happen when local leaders and volunteers band together to help the thousands of men, women and children seeking a new life in the United States than Brownsville.

The Gulf Coast port city is nestled within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection sector that has long seen the highest levels of migration. But even when border crossings surge, the shocks are quietly absorbed. Residents donate supplies and help orient the new arrivals on how to navigate their way to their final destinations.

Three hundred miles upriver, Eagle Pass offers a tale of a far different border city. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has transformed the riverfront community into a military front line on immigration. Razor wire and rusted shipping containers warn migrants to stay away. And military trucks and rifle-carrying troops occupy the city’s biggest park.

As President Biden and Republican contender Donald Trump traveled to the border Thursday, the cities each chose to plant their flag on immigration offered a study of contrasts. While both hug the Rio Grande, that’s about where the similarities end. Their common origin stories — riverfront military garrisons that grew into bicultural communities — have diverged in ways that reflect the dynamics of this contested and polemical region.

The fundamentally different responses to coping with the surge in migration illustrate the crossroads that the nation faces on one of the election’s most critical issues.

“This place for better or worse may be the fulcrum for who becomes the next president,” said former Democratic Texas state representative Poncho Nevárez, speaking of Eagle Pass. “It’s here where we’ll find out if Biden stays president or if Trump becomes president again.”

Biden visited Brownsville, a Democratic stronghold in sync with the party’s traditional approach to immigration, balancing border security with humanitarian considerations. In his remarks there, he bemoaned the death of the bipartisan border security bill, calling on the former president to reconsider his support.

“Instead of playing politics with the issue, instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation, join me," Biden said.

Brownsville is where Sister Norma Pimentel joined other civic and religious leaders in helping shepherd migrants across the border bridge after a newly elected Biden reversed Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” program three years ago. Thousands had been stuck in squalid migrant camps just across the border, forced to wait in Mexico while their asylum claims were processed.

Pimentel, director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, said it felt like the seasons at last had changed: “It was so beautiful.”

The city of nearly 190,000 residents devotes its own resources — with help from federal grants — to move migrants quickly to other places where friends and loved ones await them. And as fences, a towering wall and Border Patrol agents have cemented their presence along the Rio Grande, a network of faith-based and civic nongovernmental organizations on both sides of the border has also sprung up. They work closely with U.S. authorities to create as orderly a system as possible to help when the number of people crossing climbs.

“We are the first responders,” said Andrea Rudnick, a leader with the volunteer group Team Brownsville.

Mayor John Cowen called that “the Brownsville model.” He said that when 45,000 people passed through the city in a 30-day span last year, the community was able to handle it so efficiently alongside the Border Patrol that most residents probably didn’t even notice the sizable increase. The city remains one of the safest in the country, the mayor added.

“We’ve never had a moment that was chaotic,” he said. “It never felt out of control.”

Before 2021, rural Eagle Pass rarely saw migration numbers eclipse the sparse resources its local Border Patrol could provide. The once-sleepy town of 30,000 is isolated from other more prepared border communities in Texas. But as the number of people crossing steadily rose, the community was forced to scale up its response.

Residents, including powerful ranch owners, turned to the state for help. The region has historically elected Republicans to Congress, but to win locally, candidates usually run as Democrats, albeit conservative or moderate ones. However, it’s the GOP that controls the purse strings in Texas. The Republican governor’s office stepped in to provide millions in funding through his signature border initiative, Operation Lone Star.

The Abbott administration reacted to the city’s anxieties in a way several local officials said the Biden administration has not. Many people, they said, felt abandoned by the federal government. Some residents are nostalgic for Trump, whom they view as tougher on illegal migration.

“We know what policies work and don’t work,” said Freddy Arrellano, former chair of the Republican Party of Maverick County, home to Eagle Pass. “We felt safer under Trump.”

Mapping the Texas Governor’s effort to control the border at Eagle Pass

Texas has filled the vacuum — with troops, razor wire, buses, border wall and Humvees. But it has come at a cost: Eagle Pass, in essence, has become occupied territory. State troops seized Shelby Park — a critical stretch of riverfront land — and shut out U.S. Border Patrol agents. City leaders voted not to pursue legal action because they can’t afford it.

Operation Lone Star critics say the governor’s heavy-handed approach is more performance art and foolishness than practical. The hospital could use more personnel, for example, but instead state dollars have funded new cars for the county attorney’s newly renovated office — also financed by Operation Lone Star, local records show.

The city’s only faith-based nonprofit that works with migrants has quietly expanded its operations. In both Eagle Pass and Brownsville, border crossings have declined thus far in 2024. The governor took credit, but Mexico has also stepped up aggressive tactics to prevent migrants from reaching its northern border.

Nevertheless, Eagle Pass’s association with “border chaos” has stuck, making it the perfect place for Trump, a candidate who thrives on disorder, to make his stand, said Nevárez.

“They benefit from this psychosis of the locals who say they are overwhelmed,” he said. “Trump sees that if there is going to be a pitched battle on this issue that he wants to be at the flash point.”

During his visit Thursday, Trump praised the Texas governor’s military operation in Eagle Pass and unleashed a xenophobic screed that echoed his 2015 campaign talking points linking migrants to terrorism and violent crime.

“They’re coming from jails, and they’re coming from prisons, and they’re coming from mental institutions,” the former president said. Trump also told Texas troops patrolling the border: “You’re in a war.”

Neither border city has ever seen much result from a presidential or candidate visit, local leaders said. They expect less so in a hotly contested election year.

“I think people should see these visits the way border communities see them: ‘It’s campaign season, so here come the politicians,’” said Tami Goodlette, legal director of the Texas Civil Rights Project’s Beyond Borders program. “We should all be as skeptical of them as border communities are.”

While Brownsville is friendlier territory for Biden, he has kept in place many of his predecessor’s policies and signaled a willingness to adopt more hard-line measures that blur the distinctions between his administration and Trump’s. That is lamentable, immigration advocates said.

“It's not an option to tell migrants to wait over in Mexico. We’d like him to reach higher than that,” said longtime attorney and human rights activist Jennifer Harbury, who has worked to save the lives of migrants since the 1980s, when wars in Central America pushed thousands to flee. “I’m not happy with the lack of leadership and creativity on the part of the Democratic Party, and I’m seeing some cowardice.”

For those just arriving, being caught in the middle of the nation’s debate over immigration can feel perplexing. Erick Camejo, a university professor from Venezuela, said he would thank Biden if he got the chance to meet him and assure him that the vast majority of migrants are like him. He is in Brownsville seeking political asylum after defying Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro and losing his job.

“What fault do I bear for a broken immigration system,” he said. “I needed help, and this country gave me that chance.”

So far, the White House has not reached out to Brownsville’s nonprofits, as they have in the past — including Pimentel, who is widely known in Catholic circles and beyond for her work at the border. Biden is expected to meet exclusively with law enforcement and local elected leaders, several locals said. That worries some, including the president’s fellow Catholics.

Marooned in Matamoros: How a migrant family seeking asylum survived the "Remain in Mexico" program

Pimentel said she will be praying that the president doesn’t turn his back on the human beings suffering persecution and other forms of oppression. And she hopes both political leaders don’t lose sight of respecting people while enforcing border security.

Wherever each lands on immigration, she said, the country would be far better treating migrant families with dignity because “that is who America is.”

An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Poncho Nevárez was born in Eagle Pass. He was born in San Antonio.

Biden-Trump border visits reflect how visible the immigration issue is in 2024

A Martínez headshot

Franco Ordoñez

Both President Biden and former President Donald Trump make their way to Texas border towns on Thursday to talk about their views on how to address the migration issue.

A MARTÍNEZ, HOST:

Both President Biden and former President Donald Trump will visit the southern border in Texas today. Biden's visit reflects a more aggressive approach to one of his greatest political liabilities.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: Every day between now and November, the American people are going to know that the only reason the border is not secure is Donald Trump and his MAGA Republican friends.

MARTÍNEZ: The split screen appearances also reflect how visible the border issue is in 2024, as more Americans tell pollsters immigration is the most important problem facing the U.S. in decades. NPR White House correspondent Franco Ordoñez is covering the campaign. All right, so Biden and Trump are going to be a little over 300 miles away from each other in Texas. Let's start with President Biden, his second border visit - the first one January 23 in El Paso, part of a longer trip to Mexico for the North American Leaders' Summit. Franco, what's he hoping to accomplish on this trip?

FRANCO ORDOÑEZ, BYLINE: Yeah, A, Biden's going to visit Brownsville, Texas, where he's going to meet with Border Patrol agents and local leaders. I mean, what he wants to accomplish is to show that he's taking action on the border. You know, it's also actually part of this shift to the political center as he looks toward November. I mean, yesterday, he brought in police chiefs to talk about reducing crime, and today it's going to be immigration.

Now, on the border, you can expect Biden's going to attack House Republicans for blocking a deal that would've tightened rules for asylum and given more money to hire more border agents. And he's going to go after Trump as well. I mean, Biden says Trump is actually to blame for torpedoing that deal in order to score political points, or at least not to allow Biden to get any. I mean, what Biden's looking to do is kind of turn the tables on Republicans on this issue.

MARTÍNEZ: So I want to ask you about that. First, though, Trump's visit. He was near the border back in November, and he's made a handful of visits as president. What's his goal today?

ORDOÑEZ: Yeah, he has made a handful of visits. I mean, his objective is pretty simple. He wants to highlight the problems on the border, tie them to Biden's policies, and present himself as the only person who can fix them. Now, he's going to Eagle Pass, Texas, where the state has been trying to boost enforcement on its own. Trump's expected to, you know, highlight recent crimes committed by migrants in cities like New York.

And this week, he and his allies have been blaming Biden for the death of a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia. An undocumented immigrant from Venezuela was arrested for that crime. You know, Trump wants to capitalize on polls that show most Americans are not happy with Biden's handling of the border. And as you say, this split screen of a day just shows how the border has become a major issue in the presidential election.

MARTÍNEZ: Yeah. Now, OK, to those opportunities that Democrats see. What are they?

ORDOÑEZ: Yeah, I mean, I spoke to Evan Roth Smith, a Democrat pollster for the political strategy group Blueprint, and he pointed to a special election in New York earlier this month won by Democrat Tom Suozzi, who went on the offensive over the border, especially after Republicans tanked that deal.

EVAN ROTH SMITH: We now have proof positive in this latest election that Republicans are out over their skis again on immigration. They don't know what to do, and they've handed Democrats something they can run on for months or maybe years.

ORDOÑEZ: Now, Roth Smith says it actually reminds him of how Democrats were able to campaign and win on abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Now, I got to say, that's a very optimistic perspective, but it's also very telling how Democrats see this as an opportunity to flip the script on Republicans, to kind of counter the narrative that Democrats are soft on the border, again, on an issue that's really been incredibly difficult for Biden.

MARTÍNEZ: That's NPR's Franco Ordoñez. Thanks a lot.

ORDOÑEZ: Thanks, A.

Defining day for immigration? Border cities await real answers in rare visits by Biden, Trump

visit visited visited

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – As President Joe Biden arrives here sometime Thursday, this city in the southernmost crook of the Rio Grande will be kicking off Charro Days.

People will pour into the streets as they have since 1938 to celebrate all things Mexican in Brownsville, with mariachi bands, a bullfight and a parade that includes floats from Matamoros, Mexico, its sister city across the bridge.

Around the same time, the president will meet with Border Patrol and local law enforcement officials, continuing his pivot toward tough border enforcement as immigration becomes one of his biggest re-election liabilities.

And the same afternoon, ex-President Donald Trump will arrive upstream in Eagle Pass , where state-run border enforcement efforts have turned the city park into a militarized zone lined with steel fencing and razor wire.

The backdrops for these two visits help define two visions of the American immigration system.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

In Eagle Pass, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and his border initiative known as Operation Lone Star have framed the border as a dangerous beachhead in an immigration fight that now spills into cities across the country.

Almost everyone has grown accustomed to daily flows of migrants in Brownsville, a city where the international bridge drops into town right between the community college campus and the Ross Dress for Less. Immigration officials here process asylum-seekers daily while thousands more wait their turn in camps across the river – outside the United States.

Which version of the border voters accept as reality – or which vision they choose – is now likely to define the presidential election. For the first time since last decade, Americans now believe immigration to be the most important issue facing the United States, a Gallup poll released this week revealed.

For the people at the border, meanwhile, any campaign stop will simply showcase an immigration system that continues to disrupt their communities – and a political one that has yet to deliver them a solution.

“Do either of these people – President Biden or Trump – have a positive vision of what the border and migration at the border should look like?” said Bob Libal, an Austin-based consultant for Human Rights Watch, who travels to the border often. “Is there a vision?”

In Brownsville, Charlene D’Cruz, an immigration attorney who works with asylum-seekers, was baffled by the idea of a Biden visit. In her view, border policies have only failed to deliver relief to migrants who are preyed upon by cartels while they wait in Matamoros, or take deadly risks to cross the border instead of waiting at the ports.

“What exactly is he trying to do?” she said. “Is he trying to show, ‘Hey, it’s all orderly’? Those optics are there: It is orderly. But people are dying. Things haven’t changed. How is Biden’s trip going to fix that?”

Biden's border visit in Brownsville, Texas

At Fina’s Coffee Shop in central Brownsville, Veronica Benavides is more concerned with the price of eggs. Diners at the breakfast-all-day eatery she co-owns consume them at a clip of about 45 dozen a day.

The rising cost of rents – and eggs – and stagnant incomes rank higher for her than immigration. She said she recognizes the significance of Biden coming to Brownsville, but immigration is not a top issue for her or her business, despite the flow of asylum-seekers released into her community.

“They don’t stay here,” Benavides said. “They want to go Houston, to San Antonio. They want to go to bigger cities.”

Brownsville made headlines several years ago, when then-President Trump’s Migrant Protection Protocols policy blocked asylum-seekers from reaching the U.S. and led to makeshift camps in Matamoros. Today, the sprawling camps are gone, replaced by smaller clusters of tents housing Haitians, Venezuelans, Ukrainians and Africans waiting for their chance to apply for asylum in the U.S.

Today, recently-released migrants are sometimes seen trudging along the highway in Brownsville or clustered outside the local mall. Recently, Frank Garza, a 49-year-old business owner, encountered a group of Ukrainians having dinner at Pizza Hut. He said the sheer number of people staggering around town last year spooked his wife. He thinks the system shouldn’t just release so many people so easily.

Garza said he hopes Biden’s visit confirms to the world that Brownsville is dealing with a real migrant issue.

“I hope everybody sees it is real,” he said. “It’s very real here.”

D’Cruz, the immigration attorney, sees those migrants as the ones at risk. Rather than have Biden meet with border agents, she’d prefer the president address the rows of razor wire lining the river banks – noting that the governor’s border enforcement efforts have left a mark on Brownsville, too.

“How much control does Biden really have?” she asked. “The federal government is losing control of its own border when you have Texas trying to enforce it.”

Trump's visit to Eagle Pass, Texas

Trump is expected to emerge on Thursday in Eagle Pass’s Shelby Park, the riverfront park that was once the scene of weekend family picnics . Since 2022, though, it has been taken over by Operation Lone Star, Abbott’s billion-dollar initiative to combat undocumented border crossers. Military humvees and Texas National Guard troops guard the entrance to the park, which is used as a staging area for patrols.

Richard Flores, 58, a fifth-generation rancher in Eagle Pass, said he welcomes Trump’s visit. Flores has seen firsthand how smugglers and migrants have trampled through his property, at times cutting through his fences and allowing cattle to escape.

Though the military takeover of Shelby Park seemed a bit much at first, he said he welcomes someone who will come and offer solutions, he said.

“There are a lot of people excited about it, and there are some people against it,” Flores said of Trump’s visit. “If I were running for president, I would come here, too.”

The Biden campaign and surrogates called Trump’s visit to the border “a political stunt,” blaming the former president’s opposition to a bipartisan border bill – which denied Biden a legislative win – for blocking long-awaited action to address the border crisis. “Trump's need to boost his own fragile political ego has gotten us here with another manufactured logjam,” Illinois Gov. J.D. Pritzker, who serves on the Biden campaign’s advisory board, told reporters.

What Biden is expected to reveal in Brownsville is murkier. He’s scheduled to meet with U.S. Border Patrol officials and local law enforcement leaders. The White House has declined to say whether Biden will meet with migrants or announce any new policies.

Victor Maldonado, executive director of the Ozanam Center, the city’s largest homeless and migrant shelter, said he was surprised he wasn’t invited to any of Biden’s events. “We see the reality of what happens to these people and why they’re here,” Maldonado said. “We’re the front lines.”

Whatever both presidential contenders say or don’t say, Americans are already making up their minds about what they’ve heard. The Gallup poll showed 28% of respondents pointing to immigration as the most pressing problem in the country, up from 20% last month. The last time immigration topped a Gallup poll was in 2019, when surges of Central American migrants appeared at the U.S-Mexico border.

Biden is expected to bring up the recent bipartisan immigration bill, which stalled in the House after losing Republican support, and show he’s willing to take executive actions to bolster enforcement at the border. He’ll have a lot of convincing to do. According to a Pew Research Center survey released earlier this month, 80% of Americans believe the government is doing a bad job dealing with the large number of migrants at the border, up from 65% in 2019.

Though Republican and Democratic respondents differed in opinions on what was causing the surges or how to fix them, they agreed on one point: the Biden administration was handling it poorly, said Carroll Doherty, Pew’s director of political research.

“Any time you see 80% of Americans saying the government’s not doing well on an issue, it’s quite damning,” Doherty said.

Those conclusions highlight a reality that has daunted many presidential administrations, as the lure of American opportunity draws waves of migrants at a scale that overwhelms the limited legal pathways to allow them in.

Instead, images of floods of migrants stoke real worries about the federal government’s ability to vet so many people so quickly. And the cities where they arrive struggle to take them in.

So any speech at the border will miss the point if it’s only about the border, said Laura Collins, who directs the Bush Institute-Southern Methodist University Economic Growth Initiative in Dallas.

“The border is more than a national security problem or a migration problem,” Collins said.

“I would like to see a vision for how a functioning immigration system benefits America,” she said. “Only talking about the border neglects half the conversation that needs to happen in order to make the border actually functional.”

A border city remains

Across Brownsville, the day before the president’s arrival, residents preened plazas and streets.

Washington Plaza downtown was transformed into a fairground – not for a speech by Biden, but for the start of Charro Days, the three-day event named for the Mexican cowboys of the region’s history.

Crews set up food and beer tents and a stage. Nearby, color-strewn parade floats were parked in front lawns, ready to roll through town.

In earlier years, Charro Days’ international parade actually crossed the bridge between Matamoros and Brownsville . Today the city must settle for bringing floats and participants over from the other side.

Judge Eddie Treviño, Cameron County’s top executive, said the event sparks a special buzz in Brownsville. He began hearing rumors of Biden’s visit over the weekend then received a call from the White House on Monday, inviting him to attend.

Treviño said he realizes he won’t have a lot of face time with the president, but in the short time he does, he plans on telling him no amount of enforcement will stop the region’s waves of migrants until the system as a whole improves. He sees the recent bilateral immigration bill as a step in the right direction.

“The immigration system in our country hasn’t been updated in over 40 years. We’ve known these problems were coming,” he said. “Republican and Democratic administrations keep kicking the can down the road. That’s just not how it works.”

Biden-Trump make dueling border visits as immigration dominates 2024 race

By Aditi Sangal , Elise Hammond and Michael Williams, CNN

Catch up: Trump and Biden point fingers at each other over immigration during visits to the border

From CNN staff

Former President Donald Trump walks at Shelby Park during a visit to the US-Mexico border on Thursday in Eagle Pass, Texas.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump had a split-screen moment during dual trips to the border on Thursday.

The likely frontrunners for their respective party's nomination in 2024 were about 300 miles apart in Texas — Biden was in Brownsville and Trump visited Eagle Pass. Immigration has dominated the early part of the 2024 campaign and both candidates have pointed a finger at the other on the issue.

President Joe Biden, second from the right, looks over the southern border on Thursday in Brownsville, Texas.

Both Trump and Biden got tours of the border and met with local officials during their visits.

Here's what else happened:

  • What Trump is saying: The former president has made Biden's handling of illegal immigration a centerpiece of his reelection effort. He has also vowed to conduct the “largest domestic deportation operation in American history” if he wins the White House in November. Trump continued those attacks during remarks at the border, stoking fears about migrants and crime and blaming it on Biden. He praised Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has tried to implement a new controversial security initiative.
  • What Biden is saying: The president's trip came as he considers sweeping executive action  to restrict migrants’ ability to seek asylum if they crossed illegally. Biden has repeatedly lambasted congressional Republicans for failing to pass a bipartisan compromise spending package that included significant concessions on border policy. Bipartisanship was a big theme of his remarks. He urged the Senate to reconsider the package and asked Trump to "join" him in finding an immigration solution.
  • About this bipartisan deal: The deal was killed in the Senate earlier this month, largely due to opposition from Trump. It included a new emergency authority that would allow the Homeland Security secretary to shut down the border if certain triggers are met,   raised the legal standard of proof to pass the initial screening for asylum, among other measures.
  • Meanwhile: A federal judge in Texas ruled to suspend enforcement of a controversial law that would allow state law enforcement agents to arrest and detain people they suspect of entering the country illegally. Without action from the court, the law was set to go into effect on Tuesday.

Community activists speak out against Trump and Texas governor's immigration policies

From CNN's Catherine Shoichet

Eagle Pass resident Jessie Fuentes didn’t mince words as he spoke with reporters Thursday morning hours before former President Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott arrived in the border city.

“Mr. Trump, what you’re doing is you’re hurting the people that need the most help. Our community, if you were studying the demographics, it’s not easy being on the border. And this unwanted attention, this unwanted militarization of our community, is not welcome,” Fuentes said. “You are not welcome here, gentlemen. You’re not welcome in this community.”

Fuentes was among several community organizers and advocates who shared their views on different facets of their city Thursday morning.

Abbott announced plans to build an  80-acre base to house up to 1,800 Texas National Guard  members near Eagle Pass. Trump, who is visiting with the governor, said he would enact a widespread expansion of his administration’s immigration policies that would restrict both legal and illegal immigration if he wins back the White House in November.

Amerika Garcia Grewal told reporters she feared what she’s seen happening in Eagle Pass could happen across the United States if more isn’t done to stop it. She described seeing shipping containers and concertina wire placed along the city’s river banks and encircling the community’s golf course.

“I love Eagle Pass, and I hate that we’re being made an example of,” she said. “We must say hate has no home here, otherwise it’s just going to get worse.”

Trump stokes fears about migrants and crime during border visit

From CNN's Kate Sullivan

Former President Donald Trump visits the US-Mexico border at Eagle Pass, Texas, as seen from Piedras Negras, Mexico, on February 29.

Former President Donald Trump on Thursday stoked fears about migrants coming into the United States as railed against President Joe Biden and his border policies as he stood feet from the US-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Trump attempted to tie crime in the US to recent increases in immigration — what he calls it “migrant crime” — despite there being  little evidence indicating a connection between immigration and crime . Many researchers actually argue immigrants are less likely to commit crimes.

The former president said he spoke on Wednesday to the parents of 22-year-old Laken Riley , who was found dead after jogging on the University of Georgia campus. Trump has repeatedly invoked Riley’s death as he pushes for his hardline immigration policies because her suspected killer is an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela.

“These are the people that are coming into our country, and they're coming from jails and they're coming from prisons and they're coming from mental institution and they're coming from insane asylums and they're terrorists. They're being led into our country. And it's horrible,” Trump said as he repeated the typical anti-immigrant rhetoric he uses on the campaign trail.

The former president praised Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has tried to implement a new controversial security initiative. The US Supreme Court recently allowed US Border Patrol agents to remove razor wire deployed by Abbott’s initiative at the US-Mexico border while the state’s legal challenge to the practice plays out.

Trump’s trip to the border comes not long after Trump torpedoed a bipartisan border bill so he could continue campaigning on Biden’s perceived weakness on the border.

Biden calls on lawmakers to reconsider bipartisan border deal that was killed in the Senate this month

President Joe Biden speaks during his visit to the US-Mexico border in Brownsville, Texas, on February 29.

President Joe Biden is urging lawmakers to reconsider a bipartisan border package that was killed in the Senate earlier this month, in large part due to opposition from the GOP frontrunner, Donald Trump.

“The US Senate needs to reconsider this bill and those senators who oppose it need to set politics aside and pass it on the merits not on whether it's going to benefit one party or benefit the other party," Biden said in remarks during a trip to the US-Mexico border on Thursday.

The president emphasized that the deal was on its way to being passed when it was derailed by "partisan politics." He said compromise is a very positive step in tackling immigration — an issue that has been at the forefront of the presidential primary elections.

"We need to act. It's time for the speaker and some of my Republican friends in Congress who are blocking this bill to show a little spine," Biden said, reminding the crowd that conservative leaders also supported the deal.

Biden to Trump: "Join me" on immigration reform

From CNN's Michael Williams

President Joe Biden held out an olive branch to his likely 2024 rival as both visited the South Texas border with Mexico on Thursday, urging former President Donald Trump to "join" him in finding an immigration solution.

Biden and Trump toured the border and delivered nearly simultaneous remarks about 300 miles apart in South Texas Thursday.

"So here's what I would say to Mr. Trump," Biden said during his remarks in Brownsville. "Set a planned policy position instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation."

A bipartisan border agreement showed promise before Trump came out against it in an apparent effort to use immigration as a wedge against Biden in his upcoming campaign to retake his office.

"Join me, or I'll join you in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill," Biden said, addressing Trump directly.

"We can do it together," he added.

It's "long past time to act" on immigration, Biden says in border remarks

President Joe Biden speaks following a visit to the US-Mexico border on Thursday in Texas.

Immigration and asylum authorities “desperately need more resources,” President Joe Biden said during remarks from the US-Mexico border, adding it was “long past time to act” on immigration reform.

Biden said, “it’s time to step up, provide them with significantly more personnel and capabilities."

He said the country also needs more immigration judges to address a backlog of asylum cases.

Fact check: Trump again exaggerates about border wall construction

From CNN's Daniel Dale

Former President Donald Trump repeated one of his regular exaggerations on Thursday during a visit to Eagle Pass, Texas, claiming that “571 miles” of border wall were built during his presidency.

Facts First:   Trump’s “571 miles” claim is false, an even greater exaggeration than the  inaccurate “561 miles” and “over 500 miles” claims he has made at other points of his campaign . An  official report by US Customs and Border Protection , written two days after Trump left office and subsequently obtained by CNN’s Priscilla Alvarez, said the total number built under Trump was 458 miles — including both wall built where no barriers had existed before and wall built to replace previous barriers. Trump has sometimes put the figure, more correctly, at “nearly 500 miles.”

Fifty-two of the 458 miles built under Trump were “primary” wall that was built in parts of the border where no barriers previously existed. The rest was 33 miles of “secondary” wall that was built in spots where no barriers previously existed, plus 373 miles of primary and secondary wall that was built to replace previous barriers the federal government says had become “dilapidated and/or outdated.”

NOW: Biden makes remarks in Brownsville after meeting local officials on US-Mexico border

From CNN's Priscilla Alvarez, Kristen Holmes, MJ Lee and Michael Williams

President Joe Biden talks with the US Border Patrol and local officials, as he looks over the southern border on Thursday.

President Joe Biden is now making remarks during his trip to the US-Mexico border on Thursday. He is in Brownsville in South Texas.

The president’s motorcade arrived near the border earlier this afternoon. During his visit, Biden was expected to meet with Customs and Border Patrol agents, law enforcement and local leaders.

It comes as Biden  considers sweeping executive action  to restrict migrants’ ability to seek asylum at the US southern border if they crossed illegally. Biden has repeatedly lambasted congressional Republicans for failing to pass a bipartisan compromise spending package that included significant concessions on border policy.

Former President Donald Trump is also visiting the border on Thursday.

Trump blames Biden for border troubles as both tour South Texas

Former President Donald Trump talks near the bank of the Rio Grande River at Shelby Park during a visit to the US-Mexico border on Thursday, February 29, in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Former President Donald Trump harshly criticized President Joe Biden's handling of the border as the likely 2024 rivals take simultaneous tours of South Texas.

"The United States is being overrun by the Biden, migrant crime. It's a new form of vicious violation to our country," Trump said from near the border in Eagle Pass. "It's migrant crime. We call it Biden migrant crime, but that's a little bit long."

At the same time, Biden was receiving a briefing from Department of Homeland Security Officials near the border in Brownsville, about 300 miles away.

Biden is expected to give remarks soon.

Visited or visitted?

Correct spelling

Correct spelling, explanation: in English, there is a rule that suggests that the consonant is double when it occurs in a syllable that is stressed. For example, in words such as referred, committed, admitted , etc., we write the double consonant because these phrases end in 1 vowel + 1 consonant and the final syllable is stressed. However, in the word visited the syllable vi is, not sit and you do not need to double the consonant. Therefore, the form visited is correct, not visitted .

Definition of visited : verb, the regular past form of verb visit that means to go to meet a person or see a place, When we were in Varna, we visited several places of interest. They visited an art gallery while they were in London.

Phrases with visited : visit something on/upon someone – inflict harm on someone or a place; cause damage or harmful event, Two years ago famine visited this country and many people were forced to flee. (old use) inflict a penalty on somebody , Children sometimes suffer because the sins of their parents are visited upon them.

Incorrect spelling

Incorrect spelling, explanation: visitted is an incorrect form of past participle verb because there is a rule which says that we double the consonant in a stressed syllable. The syllable sit is not stressed so we should not write two letters t . As a result, the form visitted is incorrect.
