Our Editor’s Review

STA Travel’s International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is awesome! Are you a parent?  Even if you are not under 26 & a full-time student or teacher, it is worth the money to buy one for your kids.  Kids can get one after they turn 12.  That way they you can save cash every time you shop for them or go to restaurants with them.  Kids are expensive, and we think this is a great way to save with discounts at Macy’s, the Apple Store and more.  ISIC cards are only $22* for a full year!   Go, get one here .   We also love STA Travel’s student deals for spring break. Their prices are hard to beat.

STA Travel Fees

The STA Travel Guarantee: If you find a cheaper student flight, they will match it PLUS give you an ISIC Discount card good for 1 year. You must be a full-time student and under the age of 26 to qualify for student discounts and the ISIC discount card. $50+ Fee to Change or Re-issue airline tickets.  $100+ Cancellation fee for airline tickets.

STA Travel Reviews

The ISIC cards that STA Travel issues can get you good deals, but they literally could not do a single thing for me without making a mistake. It ended up taking me MONTHS to get my ISIC student ID card and I ended up having to pay twice as much money to get it because they kept messing up. STA Travel was very slow at responding to me when I tried to contact them with my concerns, and when I brought it up with them, they offered a refund but then never gave it to me even after I emailed them twice and they said they would! I would agree with the comment above mine that said that STA Travel seems to take advantage of inexperienced students, which is not a very smart move considering students account for nearly their entire customer base. Like I said, the ISIC student ID card can get you some great deals abroad, but be prepared to get ripped off by STA in the process!

I wrote a lengthy report of what my boyfriend and I experienced when he purchased a ticket to Poland through STA Travel: http://bit.ly/statravelfail

In a nutshell, we contacted STA Travel to find out what we could do once the ticket was canceled and we were given a different answer every single time we called. We were also promised a full refund TWICE. They made numerous customer service mistakes in handling our situation and we ended up losing $1200. I would absolutely recommend booking flights directly through the airlines. STA Travel does nothing to help you out as a customer.

I felt that STA travel went out of their way to help me get a ticket for the right price. I found them friendly and symathetic to my situation and genuinly concerned if I had a problem.

STA is misleading and takes advantage of inexperienced student travelers. Initially, I had a good experience booking my Fulbright ticket to Tirana through STA. They understood Fly America requirements for US-sponsored aid programs and found me a flight that departed from Washington, D.C., as I had requested.

I realized when I was booking my flight that my travel plans might change. Makayla, the agent who booked my flight, informed me that changes to my ticket, if made prior to 30 days before the flight date, would be $50 plus the difference in fare. Sounds great, right? Flexibility for the student life style.

What Makayla did not mention is that the phrase “changes to your ticket” only applies to changes in date- not to changes in city of departure. Today, I tried to change the city of departure on my ticket from Washington, D.C. To Chicago. This was not permitted by United, the US carrier that STA had booked the ticket under; I was later told by customer service rep Ken and manager Megan that “It’s actually not really allowed to do rerouting at all anymore.”

In order to make the change that I had requested, my ticket would need to be refunded and then rebooked with a charge of $400. I asked if STA would consider waiving the $400 refunding fee, since I felt that I had been misled when I booked the ticket. Megan refused.

In conclusion, your STA ticket is not as flexible as your STA agent may make it seem. You ought to be cautious about the terms and conditions when booking through an agent, online or on the phone, if the flexibility of the ticket is what’s holding the appeal for you.

Get an ISIC Card

Getting Your International Student Identity Card is Quick and Easy

Full-time students 12 years and older* will find the ISIC (International Student Identity Card) card the ticket to discounts on transportation (like Amtrak), accommodation (like hostels and hotels), tours (all over the world), activities, shopping, and entertainment. Not only that, but as a traveler, ISIC cards will also give you access to basic sickness and travel insurance abroad, which is a pretty amazing deal.

The ISIC card costs $25, or slightly more if you want to upgrade your travel insurance policy with them, and is valid for one year from the date of issue. I think it's great value for money for students, and highly recommend getting one. There are so many discounts available to you through this card that you should make your money back within just a couple of months.

Here's how to get your hands on an ISIC card:

* You must be seeking a degree at an accredited institution.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: A few hours

What You'll Need Before Applying:

  • One passport-sized photo (2x2 inches, with name printed in ink on the back)
  • Payment of $25, whether you're applying online, by post, or in person
  • Proof of student status
  • Proof of age
  • $3 or $20 for shipping, depending on whether you get your card expedited or not.

A Step by Step Process for Getting Your ISIC Card

  • You can either call 1-800-223-7986 (toll-free) to apply by phone through an STA travel agency, apply for an ISIC card online , or find your nearest brick and mortar ISIC issuing office. Many campus registrar or international education (study abroad) offices are ISIC issuers, so ask around on campus first, as that'll be fastest. If you don't have an ISIC card issuer on campus, I recommend applying online, as it's a much simpler process.
  • Gather one passport-sized photo (2x2 inches head and shoulders shot, with your name printed in ink on the back). You won't need to do this if you'll be applying online.
  • Prepare payment of $25 if applying by mail, and add $3.00 if for shipping. If you are paying online, make sure you have your credit or debit card ready, or access to your Paypal account.
  • Next, gather proof of student status: this could either be a photocopy of school ID that is valid this year, or a photocopy of your transcript/report card for this academic year. You can then either take this in to the office, send a photocopy if applying by mail, or scan it in to your laptop if you're buying your card online.
  • Gather proof of your age: this could be a copy of your driver's license, your  passport , your state issued identification card or student identification card if it shows your age. A birth certificate won't work here, because your proof must show a current photo and your age.
  • If you'll be applying by phone or online, be prepared to upload your documents to your laptop so you can either upload them to the online form or email them to the person you're speaking to on the phone. If applying by mail, send the $25 you have prepared and the above documents to STA Travel, INC. National Call Center, ID card Department; 585 N Juniper Drive, Suite 250; Chandler, AZ 85226.
  • You're all done! Now you just have to wait for your ISIC card to arrive, and then you can start reaping the benefits. Standard shipping will take 15 business days and will cost you $3. If you're in a hurry, you can speed up the shipping to two days by paying $15. The ISIC card is great for scoring  student travel discounts , like the student travel discount on Amtrak, and you can also use it as international ID as you travel around the world.

Coronavirus forces STA Travel out of business

  • Published 21 August 2020

STA Travel in Cambridge

STA Travel has become the latest travel firm to fall victim to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The company, which grew out of a student travel business and specialised in trips for young people, including gap years and volunteer projects, has ceased trading.

STA Travel has more than 50 shops in the UK.

The firm said customers with bookings would "receive further communication in the coming days".

"We are sorry for the inconvenience and the limited information available to you at this time," a statement on its website said.

About 500 UK jobs are thought to be at risk as a result of the firm's failure.

The firm's parent company, based in Switzerland, said the pandemic had "brought the travel industry to a standstill".

  • Will I get my money back if I can't go on holiday?
  • What are the UK's travel rules?

Why is Croatia on the quarantine list? And other questions

A spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) said the news would "send a shockwave through the industry, bringing to life the very real pressures that travel is under at the moment".

"STA Travel will be a name that is familiar to most people who will have used them to travel or been aware of their name on the High Street, and this distressing news will sadly affect the livelihoods of hundreds of employees," the spokesperson said.

ABTA says the majority of flights and holidays sold by STA would be protected by the Atol scheme, an insurance scheme which protects holiday bookings. It directed customers to its website for further advice.

Amelia should have taken her month-long holiday to Bali and Borneo back in April but, when the pandemic arrived, it was postponed until September.

STA Travel told her and her boyfriend last week their trip would no longer go ahead at all. Now the 22-year-old from Walsall just wants to get her money back as quickly as possible.

"The STA agent said they would offer us credit notes but they would be split up between the different companies that STA booked all our travel and accommodation through.

"There is no way we would be able to spend all of the credit notes on the same trip if we did it ourselves.

"It's really, really disappointing - we just hope we can get our money back quickly but I'm not sure we will."

The Civil Aviation Authority said it was aware of "a number of consumers whose bookings have been cancelled by STA Travel Ltd as a result of government advice or flight cancellations".

Customers whose bookings were protected by Atol would be able to submit a claim through their online portal, the CAA said.

STA Travel, which originally stood for Student Travel Australia, but was later rebranded Student Travel Association, was founded in 1971, and specialises in long-haul, adventure and gap year travel.

The firm said: "Over recent months, the company took decisive measures to secure the business beyond Covid-19.

"However, sales have not picked up as anticipated, due to consumer uncertainties, further restrictions and renewed lock-down measures, which are expected to largely continue into 2021."

Simon Calder, travel editor of the Independent, said coronavirus had particularly hit long-haul specialists like STA, which arranged tailor-made trips.

He said a combination of High Street rents, a lack of income and demands for refunds was made worse when Australian airline Qantas announced it would not be running intercontinental flights in or out of Australia until the second half of 2021.

"Clearly the parent company… had to look at the future and just decided that there was no chance of business coming back at anything like the necessary amount before next year," Mr Calder said.

He added that "other casualties" were inevitable - particularly with countries being suddenly added to the UK's quarantine list.

"That's generated so much uncertainty that people simply aren't flying," he said.

STA Travel becomes latest casualty of coronavirus crisis

Package tour firm, which employed around 500 staff in 50 high street branches in the UK, confirms it has ceased trading

STA Travel, which offered package tours for backpackers and adventurous young people, has become the latest business to cease trading because of the coronavirus pandemic . The travel company employed around 500 staff in 50 high street branches across the UK and at its central London headquarters.

A statement posted on its Twitter account read: “To our valued customers, due to the recent announcement that STA Travel UK has ceased trading, unfortunately our team are unable to assist you at this time.

“Please be assured that if you had a previous booking with us, or hold a live booking, you will receive further communication in the coming days. We are sorry for the inconvenience and the limited information available to you at this time.”

The company, which went into administration on Thursday, was licensed to carry around 30,000 package holidaymakers a year under its Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (Atol) bond.

A spokesperson for Abta, the trade association for the UK travel industry, said: “People will have used STA Travel to book package holidays as well as individual air tickets.

STA Travel advertising

“The majority of holidays sold were flight-inclusive packages, which are protected by Atol, and scheduled airline tickets only, which should proceed as normal. Non-flight based packages will be protected by Abta.

“If customers booked a package holiday through STA Travel, and the holiday is provided by another tour operator, they will need to contact the tour operator, who should be able to confirm that their booking will go ahead as normal.

“STA Travel will be a name that is familiar to most people who will have used them to travel or been aware of their name on the high street, and this distressing news will sadly affect the livelihoods of hundreds of employees.”

STA Travel was founded by two Australian backpackers in Melbourne in 1979 and originally stood for Student Travel Australia. It was later rebranded to become Student Travel Association, and subsequently Start The Adventure.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) told customers it was aware of a number of consumers whose bookings had been cancelled by STA Travel Ltd as a result of government advice or flight cancellations .

“Consumers who have accepted valid refund credit notes or are due refunds for the cancellation of their Atol-protected booking will be able to submit a claim to Atol through our online portal,” it said. “If consumers have a flight-only booking that was Atol-protected, they will only be able to make a claim if they are still due to travel and have not received a valid ticket.

“Otherwise, consumers should speak to their airline, including if the flight has been cancelled or they have received a voucher for a cancelled flight.”

The company’s announcement comes after Qantas announced on Thursday that it would not operate intercontinental flights to and from Australia before the second half of 2021.

Earlier this month, Voyager Travel Direct, an online firm based in Sheffield, ceased trading. At that time, the CAA said, 16 Atol-protected companies had gone bust since March.

Student travel agencies.

Student travel agencies provide International Student Identification Cards (ISIC) which offer discounts and specials for student travelers. Travel agents help students find opportunities and special rates for future travel. Student travel agencies specialize in travel opportunities and discounts for student travelers. Even in the age of the internet, it can be useful to speak to an agent at an actual travel agency. There is no charge to visit or call a travel agent. Some questions to ask your travel agent:

  • Does flying into or out of a different city (near my intended destination) make a difference in cost?
  • Are there lower fares on certain days of the week?
  • Is there a price difference between direct flights vs. flights with layovers?
  • Are there flights with free layovers?
  • Does length of stay matter? (even a few days can make a difference)
  • Does the date make a difference? (the cost of flights usually varies greatly depending on the time of the year, known to travel agents as low, shoulder and high seasons)
  • How soon do I have to pay to lock in this particular fare?
  • Are student/youth/faculty discounts available?
  • Does the cost of airfare differ for arriving in one overseas city and departing from another? (e.g. flying into London and out of Rome).

Student/Youth/Faculty Fares

Low cost fares are available for students, teachers, youth under age 26, and young children who purchase an  International Student Identity Card (ISIC) .
