Shimla – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary
If one was to prepare a list of the favorite and most visited tourist destinations of our country, Shimla will definitely be at the top of that list. This small hill town has enjoyed the status of being the favored one for almost 2 centuries now. British arrived here in the early 1800s and liked the place so much that they declared it as their summer capital in 1864. They even took all the hassle of building a railroad to Shimla.
The British left a long time ago but Shimla still continues to enjoy the same status. The beauty of this place is no less than it was a century ago, and still attracts thousands of tourists each year from all parts of the country.
If you too were thinking of visiting Shimla in the near future, then in this article I will provide some quick tips on how to plan a trip to Shimla. Your final travel plan will of course depend on several factors like how you are traveling; how many days you have in hand; the time of your trip but I will add a few things in this article which will remain the same irrespective of all these.
Quick Navigation
About Shimla
Shimla, also known as Simla, is the capital and the largest city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It gets its name from Shyamala Mata, an incarnation of the goddess Kali. A temple, dedicated to the goddess and named Kali Bari temple, is situated near the Ridge.
The town is located at 2,276 meters (7,467 ft) and is fondly called the ‘queen of the hills’. Before independence, it served as the summer capital of British India. After independence, it became the capital of Punjab and then finally the capital of Himachal Pradesh after the state came into existence.
Reasons to visit Shimla
What makes Shimla a desired destination for thousands of people however is because it is perfect for all kinds of vacations. From honeymooners to adventure seekers to families, the city serves as a charming retreat to a large number of people. The enchanting beauty of this hill station has attracted countless filmmakers and cinematographers. This erstwhile summer capital of the British, still retains its colonial-era charm through its spectacular historical churches and institutes, like Christ Church, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, and many more.
It is very well connected by road so getting here is not a problem. You never really go too remote and the famous market of Shimla is perfect for an evening of shopping around. Every modern-day facility is available here including good hospitals in case a medical emergency came up. All cell phone networks work in Shimla so you remain connected with your family and friends all the time.

Another great reason is the vast choice of accommodation choices available. No matter what your budget is, you will easily find a place to stay in Shimla. While the overall altitude of the city is enough to make it snow here, you never really climb up to a level where it becomes uncomfortable; or where you run a risk of suffering from acute mountain sickness. In short, it is a perfect destination to go to with family and also for a quick weekend getaway with friends.
How to Reach Shimla
Reaching Shimla will really be the easiest part of your vacation here. The city is very well connected and you can reach either by road, air or train, depending on your own preference.
How to reach Shimla by Road
Let us first take a look at how you can reach Shimla if you were traveling by your own car or motorcycle. For the sake of explaining the route, I will assume that you were starting from Delhi. Even if you were coming from a different city though, only the journey till Chandigarh may change. The rest of the details will still apply.
Starting from Delhi, the route of the journey will be as mentioned below.
Delhi – Panipat – Karnal – Ambala – Zirakpur – Panchkula – Kalka – Kandaghat – Shoghi – Shimla
The total travel time will be about 7-8 hours, depending on your speed and breaks. From Delhi, you will follow NH1 until Chandigarh. Do not enter the city though. Just before Chandigarh, turn right towards Kalka on Himalayan Expressway and follow the uphill road to Shimla.
This entire road remains in good condition all year. There is some road widening work happening between Kalka and Shimla due to which you may encounter some slow traffic. Once this work is completed, the entire road to Shimla will be a 4 lane highway, can you believe it?
How to reach Shimla by Bus
Shimla is very well connected by a regular bus service. There are daily buses available from almost all major cities in North India and finding one will be really easy. HRTC and HPTDC operate daily buses from Shimla to places like Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, etc, and vice versa. Other state transport agencies as well as private travel companies also provide regular buses. Just do a Google search and you will get plenty of options.
If you were coming from Delhi, you can board an overnight air-conditioned luxury bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, or may even catch a daytime bus.

How to reach Shimla by Train
An even fun and better way however will be to get here by Train. Yes, I am referring to the famous toy. You can reach Kalka by either a train from Delhi or Chandigarh and then board the Toy Train. The entire journey is on a narrow-gauge rail track, covering a distance of 96 kilometers in about 7 hours. For more details, please take a look at How to Plan a trip by Shimla Kalka Train .
If you do not want to travel by this train, you can reach Chandigarh instead. From there, either board a Bus or hire a private taxi.
How to reach Shimla by Flight
Jubarhati, which is about 23 kilometers from the town, is the nearest airport to Shimla. There are regular flights going from Jubarhatti to Chandigarh and Delhi.
Other than Jubarhatti, Chandigarh is the next nearest airport.
Best way to reach Shimla
The best way to reach Shimla would be to travel by your own vehicle; either by a motorcycle or Car. The condition of the road, as I mentioned, is very good and it takes you through some really stunning landscape. You can take as many breaks as you want, travel at your own pace and enjoy the scenery.

What to See in Shimla
Shimla has a long list of tourist attractions. You can spend days here and still not be done with it all. Some places are right in the town whereas some others are at a little distance, like Kufri. If you drove a little further, you can even visit places like Narkanda and Thanedar , that are equally beautiful and even quieter than the main town.
I have covered the topic of sightseeing in a different article, Complete List of Tourist Attractions in Shimla and its Vicinity , that I will urge you to read. Adding all of these details here on this one page would have just rendered this article endless.
Places to visit in Shimla
But for a brief summary, below are some of the best places you can visit during your trip.
- Mall Road: Main shopping street is known as “The Mall” or “Mall Road”. It is more or less the center of all activity here and runs as the town’s lifeline. Cafes, restaurants, and social hangouts on Mall Road are especially popular with locals and tourists alike.
- Christ Church: It is the second oldest church in Northern India, dating back to 1857. Situated on The Ridge, it is one of the prominent landmarks of Shimla and a fine display of neo-Gothic architecture.
- Scandal Point: It is known so because this is where the Maharaja of Patiala had eloped with the daughter of the British Viceroy. Back then, it was the scandal of the highest order.
- Jakhu Hill: The highest peak around Shimla, at a height of 8,000 ft, offering a magnificent view of the valley around.
- Shimla State Museum: Full of several ancient artifacts displaying the cultural wealth of Himachal Pradesh
- Statue of Lord Hanuman at Jakhu Hill: This 108 feet tall statue stands at a height of 8,500 ft above sea level.
- Viceregal Lodge: Dating back to 1888, this lodge was built by British architect Henry Irwin and served as the residence of the British Viceroy of India
- Rothney Castle: Rothney Castle was the home of Allan Octavian Hume, the British civil servant who founded the Congress in 1885

Things to do in Shimla
Other than visiting all of the places mentioned above, here is a list of some other activities that you may indulge yourself in while visiting Shimla. I am not including things like hiring a cab and drive an hour to visit a nearby place, but things that you can do while staying in the town itself.
Take a Walk on The Ridge: The ridge is an area near Jhaku Hill and the Observatory. This is the place where Shimla’s fairs, festivals, and functions are held. Tourists come here to see several colonial-style buildings, a church, a library, and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Trek to Jhaku Hill: At a height of 2,455 meters, the top of Jhaku hill offers a mesmerizing view of Shimla and the entire Shivalik range around. It is a fun trek of about 30 minutes to the top through lush forest terrain.
Shop at Mall Road: While you are in Shimla, do not forget to do some shopping at the famous Mall road and buy yourself some souvenirs.
Ride the Toy Train: Take a ride in the famous Toy train of Shimla. It is a journey of 96 kilometers that will take you over 864 bridges and 102 tunnels, including the longest one at Barog. Scenic vistas will accompany you throughout the journey and you will have a hard time to stop clicking your camera.
Weather of Shimla
The weather in Shimla is mostly cool throughout the year. The summers can be moderately warm but winters will be extremely cold. During the summer, the temperature will fluctuate between 10°C to 28°C. The average temperature during winter is 10°C to 0°C, but the record low temperature is −12°C.
Between late December to early February, Shimla receives plenty of snow each year and turns into a winter wonderland. Sometimes even the roads from Shimla to Mashobra or Narkanda can get blocked due to all the snow on the road. The night temperature in these months will drop close to 0°C.
The snow is mostly all gone by March, except for at the top of the distant peaks. April marks the beginning of the spring season and until the end of summer in June, Shimla receives the majority of tourists each year. People reach here to escape the scorching heat of the plains. But at this time, even Shimla can feel pretty hot and you may need to switch on the AC in your hotel room. The day temperature can go even beyond 30°C.
The months of July and August are of monsoon. Even though the scenic beauty at this time is at its best, it is not a safe time to visit anywhere in the hills. Shimla receives a lot of rain each year. Sometimes it can rain non-stop for days, causing landslides and making a trip very risky.

Monsoon departs in the month of September but leaves behind plenty of greenery. Autumn arrives in October and all that was green in September now turns Orange. November is mostly a dry month when the winter settles in once again and the average temperature drops close to 10°C.
Best time to Visit Shimla
Answer to this question will depend on whether you are planning a winter trip or in the months of summer; and what exactly do you seek. On an overall basis, the months from March to June are considered the best time to visit Shimla. This is the time when the weather is neither too cold nor hot. The temperature will range between 10°C to 28°C and both days and nights will be pleasant.
If you were however planning a winter trip and wanted to see plenty of snow, then the months of January and February will be the best time to visit here. The temperature however at this time can dip as low as −4 °C. So you must carry plenty of woolens, jackets and warm clothes. Chances of snowfall are more in January than February.
If you, however, would like to witness the lush green valleys, the months of July, August and September would be the best time. This is the time when the monsoon is either in the valley or has just passed and breathes in life to the fauna and flora of the region.
Please be advised that the rainy season also brings in the risk of incessant rains and landslides as a result. You may even get restricted to your hotel room completely if it rained non-stop.
When to go to Shimla
Below is a breakdown of the best time to go to Shimla for different kinds of trips.
- Best time to visit Shimla for Apples: The apple harvesting season begins in mid-July and ends in August.
- Best time to visit Shimla by Toy Train: The toy train remains functional for all 12 months so it is only a question of when is it convenient for you. Please take a look at How to Plan a Trip in Shimla Kalka Toy train for more details.
- Best time to visit Shimla for Snow: A trip in January or February will be best if you want to see snow.
- Best time to visit Shimla for Honeymoon: If you were planning your honeymoon, January to March will be the best time. September and October will be the next best months.
- Best time to visit Shimla for Snowfall: Your chances of catching a snowfall are best between late December to early February. It can snow in late February or early March as well but chances are less.
- Best time to visit Shimla with Family: The months from March to June are best for a family trip.
- Best Month to visit Shimla: September, in my opinion, is the best month to visit Shimla. For a winter trip, January will be the best.
- Best season to visit Shimla India: Spring and post-monsoon are the best seasons to visit Shimla.
Where to Stay in Shimla
Shimla is one of the most visited hill stations in our country which means that no matter which month you arrive here in, finding a place to stay will not be a problem at all. Hotels here are available in every range, from luxury 5-star resorts to budgeted guest houses. You can easily find a room here for as low as Rs. 700 per night. As a matter of fact, the moment you enter Shimla, you will have agents chasing you for a good hotel deal.
Whether or not to book in advance depends upon your discretion but is not required. If you have already decided on a hotel and know where you want to stay, you may book. If you are on a budget or not sure of the hotel, then best would be to reach Shimla, find a hotel per your liking and negotiate an on the spot deal.

Things to Pack for Shimla Trip
Below is a list of items that you should be packing for your trip.
If visiting in summer, pack light cotton clothes for the day as the sun is quite strong. The temperature in the evening however may drop a bit so pack a light jacket as well.
If visiting Shimla in the winter, carry woolens, thermals, and a heavy jacket. To keep warm when it snows, boots, gloves, a cap, and muffler are essential.
If visiting during the monsoon season or in September, you should pack clothes that can dry faster, like polyester. If it was not inconvenient, you should also pack an umbrella or a poncho.
Other Items
Some other things to carry will include the following.
- Government-issued valid identity card
- Warm Caps (Winter)
- Pair of Waterproof Warm Gloves (Winter)
- Sunblock lotion with highest SPF that you can find (if visiting in Summer)
- Prescribed medicines if you are on medication
- Head Phones/Earphones
- Chargers for your electronic items
- Umbrella or a Rain Poncho (if visiting during monsoon)
- Snow Boots if visiting in Winter
- Boots with a good grip if you are planning to go on a trek
- Comfortable Lower if planning to go on the trek as jeans are not advisable for this purpose
Itinerary for Shimla
How your trip finally plans out will completely depend on how you were traveling and the number of days in hand. But I will suggest a few different plans that you can follow, covering Shimla and its nearby areas.
I will suggest the itinerary assuming that you were starting from Delhi. Even if you were coming from a different city though, only the part about traveling to and from Delhi will change. The rest of the details will still apply.
3 Days Itinerary Shimla Trip Itinerary
- Day 1 – Delhi to Shimla
- Day 2 – Spend the day sightseeing in Shimla. Visit Jakhu Temple, Christ Church, The Ridge, and Mall Road. Take a drive towards Kufri
- Day 3 – Return to Delhi
4 Days Itinerary
- Day 2 – Spend the day sightseeing in Shimla. Visit Jakhu Temple, Christ Church, The Ridge, and Mall Road.
- Day 3 – Take a drive towards Narkanda. On the way, visit places like Mashobra and Kufri. See Hatu Temple in Narkanda.
- Day 4 – Return to Delhi
5 Days Plan
- Day 2 – Take a walk on the Ride road. Later, visit Jakhu Temple and Christ Church. Spend the evening at Mall Road.
- Day 4 – This day can be planned in 3 ways. Either you can spend it in Shimla just relaxing and enjoying the views. Or you can take a drive to the nearby Chail which is another great tourist attraction. The third way is to enjoy a ride in the Toy Train.
- Day 5 – Return to Delhi
By Public Transport
The above plans were for someone traveling by their own vehicle. If you were coming by a Bus, below is how you can plan your journey.
- Day 0 – Board an overnight bus for Shimla. In Delhi, you can get it from ISBT Kashmere Gate.
- Day 2 & 3 – Spend the next 2 days in the town itself. Visit all of the local attractions in Shimla, eat out, and do some shopping.
- Day 4 – Board the toy train and reach Kalka. From Kalka, reach Chandigarh Bus stand and find a Bus for your hometown. If you have no interest in the toy train, then find a Bus for back to your hometown from Shimla itself.
Another way you can plan this journey is by doing it the other way around.
- Day 0 – Board a Bus late in the evening that can drop you at either Shimla or Kalka by the morning the next day.
- Day 1 – Board the morning toy train for Shimla from Kalka. Reach Shimla and check into a hotel.
- Day 2 & 3 – Spend the next 2 days sightseeing in Shimla.
- Day 4 – Return to Delhi by Bus.
Mobile Network in Shimla and Data Connectivity
BSNL has the widest network coverage in Himachal but in Shimla, every cellphone will work fine. Irrespective of which network you were on, you will get reception and 4G data.
If I was to name one, I will say that Airtel and Jio are best mobile network in Shimla on an overall basis. BSNL has a good network everywhere but data connectivity can be a little poor at times.
Hospital / Medical Assistance
Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and as such, it has good and large hospitals, capable of handling all kinds of medical emergencies. If you need medical assistance, finding it in Shimla will not be difficult at all.
But with that being said, I will strongly recommend carrying a few basic medicines like for flu, upset stomach, fever, body ache, and pain relief spray.
Petrol Pump / Mechanics
There are petrol pumps and mechanics available in Shimla. In fact, car and motorcycle companies have authorized service stations here so it will not be a problem at all.
Banks / ATMs
All major banks have their branches and ATMs in Shimla. I have been in Shimla on numerous occasions and have never had any trouble getting cash at any of the ATMs.
What & Where to Eat
Being a popular tourist destination, Shimla has an endless list of restaurants serving all kinds of dishes. Out here, you can try local Himachali food, North & South Indian, Chinese, Italian, and pretty much everything.
Where you eat will surely depend on where you were. Your breakfast will be at your hotel and lunch at a restaurant depending on your sightseeing plan. But for dinner, I will suggest that you go to Mall Road and try any of the restaurants there per your liking.
Shopping in Shimla
There are four places where you can try shopping. The first one is the Mall road, the heart of all the action and activity. The second and cheaper option is the Tibetan Market where you can negotiate for good deals on clothes.
An even cheaper place is the Lower Bazaar but is more for buying day to day commodities rather than shopping.
If you want to buy some decorative items, you should try Lakkar Bazaar.
Other than these 4 places, the Himachal Emporium is also a good place to buy some local handicraft items.
My favorite of all these is the Lakkar Bazaar. It is a great place to pick up some souvenirs for the trip. You can try Mall road as well but I found it better for eating than shopping.
Shimla Road Condition
The entire stretch between Delhi to Shimla is a smooth run. Both NH1 between Delhi and Chandigarh and then NH22 between Chandigarh and Shimla remain in excellent condition throughout the year. The only problem on this stretch earlier was the narrow roads and traffic of Kala but with Himalayan Expressway being now operational, the complete journey has turned into bliss.
At the time of writing this article, there is road widening work ongoing between Kalka and Shimla so expect some slow traffic at places. But upon completing, this entire road will turn into a 4 lane highway.
The roads from Shimla to other places like Kufri, Fagu and Narkanda are also very smooth.
Best Vehicle
There is really no best vehicle as such. You will find the locals here driving around Maruti hatchbacks and even scooters. The only thing needed is that your vehicle is well maintained and capable of handling the ups and downs of the mountain roads. In fact, you will find most of the taxi drivers using a Maruti Alto for showing the tourists around.
Below are some most commonly asked questions about Shimla.

Shimla remains open for tourism throughout the year and flaunts different colors in every season. While the months of June till September will present you with lush green and well-blossomed valleys; January and February will cover Shimla under a thick sheet of white.

Our group bonded well and we enjoyed places we might otherwise not have seen We were disappointed in the shortened Toy Train ride to Shimla, necessitating a 20 minute climb up a rough track with all our bags and the allocation of berths in the overnight sleeper train. Having top bunks in cabins of 6 and being quite apart from other group members could have been avoided with earlier booking. While the hotels were satisfactory, some needed maintenance to avoid such things as gaping holes in the baths. Overall however, we were glad we did it. Our tour leader was knowledgeable and ensured that everyone was safe throughout the trip.
Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla (Toy Train Ride)
We covered a lot of grounds in the 7-day tour with WTX. The WTX staff (particularly the driver from New Delhi) provides excellent services with transfer to and from the New Delhi Airport, and New Delhi/Shimla Train Station. A big "Thank You" to Mr. Prakash on his quick action in solving our accommodation problem at Shimla. It was my first holiday to India and my friend's 4th time to India, we both enjoyed our the tour and most grateful at WTX's services.

Mesmerizing Shimla, Manali & Chandigarh from Delhi - 07 Days
This was a truly enjoyable experience from start to finish. The company we travelled with was excellent, and the food and accommodation were of a very high standard. We saw and learned so much about this magical country, more than I could have ever expected. A special mention must go to our tour leader Kishore, who was always attentive and took as much pleasure in showing us around as we did in seeing everything. I would recommend this experience to anyone and everyone. Thank you all for making it so special.
Himalayas Tour By Train with Amritsar [Golden Temple] & Shimla Toy Train Tour [10 Days]
We enjoyed the places we visited on this tour as it covered all the places we were interested in, the only disappointment in the itinerary was the cancellation of the Toy train from Shimla, which we expected to be a highlight of this tour. We particularly liked Amritsar and the guide was very helpful in taking us into the kitchens at the Golden Temple which we may not have done on our own - he was very informative. The Partition Museum was interesting, although half an hour was not enough time and we had to leave half way through the visit. The experience of the flag Ceremony at the border with Pakistan was fun and enjoyable. Dharamshala was lovely but it felt like we were on a mystery tour as we couldn't communicate with the driver about the plan for the day due to him speaking and understanding very little English. As it happened, he took us to all the places we wanted to visit, but it was frustrating not knowing what was happening and timescales. We had the same problem in Shimla. Malkeet our driver was very helpful and reliable and we felt safe in the car with him, even though no seat belts in the back. The hotels were mixed - we liked the Clarks Inn Amritsar very much but the hotel in Dharamshala was totally inadequate. No one else staying there, no drinks available, not even bottled water and even though they provided us with a menu, they did not have most things and it seemed they were not cooking at the hotel but instead going out to get a take away! They did get us one beer for the evening, even though we would have liked more. The only breakfast option was omelette and toast (which was not prepared with food hygiene in mind). The general cleanliness of the hotel. such as bedding and table linen did not make our stay comfortable for the two nights. The room was dark and dingy and had seen better days. The location was isolated so there was no where else we could go to eat or drink in the evening. We would have have liked to been able to go out and choose somewhere to eat. The hotel in Shimla was okay but not a good location for us to have any independence on dining outside the hotel. Overall, apart for the Toy train, everything went to plan and there was someone to meet us at every new destination on the tour. We enjoyed the tour.
- €126 deposit on some dates Some departure dates offer you the chance to book this tour with a lower deposit.
Beauty of Himachal Tour - 7 Days
Overall it was very good experience of Himalayan tour I have to salute our driver how he handle the traffic of India what a great company and great team of India
Have to embark on the Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla, which included a toy train ride. This 6-day tour was an absolute delight and truly exceeded my expectations. Our journey began in Delhi, and we were greeted by our knowledgeable and friendly tour guide who provided us with a brief overview of the tour. We then proceeded to Agra, where we were mesmerized by the majestic Taj Mahal. The tour guide provided us with interesting historical facts and stories about this iconic monument, making the experience even more memorable. Next, we headed to Jaipur, also known as the Pink City. The city's vibrant colors, bustling bazaars, and breathtaking forts left us in awe. The tour guide made sure we experienced the best of Jaipur, from the Amber Fort to the City Palace. The local markets were also a highlight, and we indulged in some delicious traditional Rajasthani cuisine. After exploring the Golden Triangle, we headed to Shimla, where the real adventure began. The toy train ride was a unique experience, and we were able to witness the stunning landscapes of the Himalayas. The journey was filled with picturesque views of lush green valleys, snow-capped mountains, and charming villages. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Once we arrived in Shimla, we were greeted with a warm welcome by our hotel staff. The city's colonial charm and cool climate were a refreshing change from the bustling cities of Delhi and Jaipur. We explored the city's main attractions, such as the Mall Road, Christ Church, and the Viceregal Lodge. The tour guide also took us to the nearby town of Kufri, where we enjoyed horse riding and breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Overall, the Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla was an unforgettable experience. The tour was well-organized, and the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. The toy train ride was a highlight and added a unique touch to the tour. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the rich cultural heritage of India and witness the beauty of the Himalayas. It is a perfect blend of history, culture, and adventure.

This article is a Shimla travel guide that also contains a Shimla itinerary for one day.
Shimla is a picturesque and popular hill station located in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. Since it's located in close proximity to major cities in Himachal, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, a lot of people come here to take a break from the city life. Even though a majority of people visit Shimla in the Summer season to cool off in the queen of hill stations, Shimla is a wonderful place to visit in any season.
You'll find quite a few things to do in Shimla like local Shimla sightseeing, shopping at Mall Road and eating at nice cafes with unbelievable views. However, the major joy lies in sitting back and enjoying the views of the mountains. With this in mind, this post is a Shimla travel guide that contains all the major information you need for planning a trip to Shimla and figuring out the things to do in Shimla city. Additionally, it also contains a Shimla itinerary for one day.

Shimla Travel Guide & Itinerary
Because Shimla is one of the most popular hill stations in India, it's always filled with tourists and locals who want to cool off and witness the magic of the mountains. If you too are planning a visit to Shimla then you'll find this Shimla travel guide extremely helpful. I've also included a Shimla itinerary for one day inside this guide.
Shimla Weather and Best Time to Visit Shimla
People prefer to visit Shimla during the Summer season in May-June, to get a relief from the scorching heat but Shimla is also a popular tourist destination in the other seasons as well.
If you want to experience snow and to see the slow life in Shimla, sip hot chai inside a cafe while overlooking mountains laden with snow from a window then you should visit Shimla in the peak winter months of December and January.
Additionally, September, October, March and April are the shoulder months when there aren't too many tourists and the weather is pleasant. For me, personally, this is the best time to visit Shimla.
How to Reach Shimla
Shimla, being a popular sightseeing destination can be reached in numerous ways from nearby cities nad towns. Shimla is connected to all major nearby cities by road, train and flight. Take a look at the various ways of reaching Shimla.
How to Reach Shimla by Bus
Travelling to Shimla by bus is a popular option that most people tend to choose. There are frequent buses to Shimla from all major cities within and outside of Himachal. From Delhi, you'll find a range of buses such as ordinary, semi-sleeper, Volvo etc based on your level of comfort. Similarly, there are regular buses from Chandigarh, Manali etc to Shimla.
How to Reach Shimla by Train
One of the best, most pleasing ways to reach Shimla would be to take the toy train from Kalpa to Shimla. The scenic journey will take you through rolling hills, tunnels and stunning landscapes. If I could change one thing about my Shimla trip, I would've travelled by train instead of the bus.
How to Reach Shimla by Flight
The nearest airport to Shimla is at Jubbarhatti, located 22 km away from Shimla city. You'll find inexpensive direct flights from Delhi to Shimla quite easily.

Delhi to Shimla by Car
One of the best options to reach Shimla is to go from Delhi to Shimla by car. The drive is not too long. In fact, the distance of 342 km from Delhi to Shimla can be covered within 7 hours. This route is extremely scenic and it will be a great road trip to take with either family or with friends.
Where to Stay in Shimla
If you're looking for a short stay in Shimla to travel further towards Kinnaur and Spiti, it's best to find a hotel near the ISBT Tutikandi bus stand. I stayed at Star A-One Homestay which was located right at the bus stand.
However, if you're travelling to Shimla for more than just a day for sightseeing in Shimla then find a hotel near Mall Road, which will be the central location for visiting all the Shimla attractions. You can very easily find hotels starting from the INR 500 rupee range.

Places to Visit in Shimla in One Day - A Shimla Itinerary
Shimla is one of the most popular hill stations in India. Its close proximity to Delhi makes it a favorable summer destination for city dwellers. There aren't a whole lot of things to do in Shimla. Since it has a lot of natural beauty, Shimla is a place to relax, unwind and disconnect from the city life. There are just a handful of Shimla sightseeing places. Take a look at them and the various other things to do in Shimla in this Shimla itinerary for one day.
1. City Point
City point is exactly what it sounds like - a point in the city. I had presumed it might be called so because it would be a point where you get a view of the city. But it turns out it's a location from where one end of the mall road stretch begins. You can start your Shimla itinerary tour from here.

2. Town Hall
If you're an architecture buff like me, you'll fall in love with the Town Hall in Shimla. This beautiful building has been constructed in the Tudor style of architecture which originated in the 1500's under King Henry VIII in England. One could spend hours admiring the make of this building. Luckily for me, I found a cafe with windows overlooking the Town Hall. But more on that later.
3. The Ridge
The Ridge is the upper section of the mall road from where you get to see incredible views of the Shimla city, Christ Church and the city square area. The mall road opens up to a wide area where you'll find lots of people walking around, college kids hanging out, parents buying treats for their kids from the street vendors and lots of activity. This area looks particularly delightful on a snowy or a rainy day.
4. Christ Church
The Christ Church in Shimla is located right next to the ridge. This church is the backdrop of the open square area. You'll identify this church in many Bollywood movies that are shot in Shimla. One of the more popular ones being 3 Idiots movie where two scenes were filmed in front of Christ church as well as at the ridge.
Where to Eat - The Best Cafes in Shimla
As I had mentioned earlier, I came across a cafe that was situated directly across the Town Hall. It was a charming little place with large windows to enjoy the outside view. The name of this place is Wake and Bake cafe . When I visited the cafe, there were two guys there practising their music on the guitar. With a little drizzle outside and the melodious music next to me, I can say it felt like I was sitting in the best cafe in Shimla. What a beautiful afternoon that was! Other than Wake and Bake, Cafe Shimla Times is a popular cafe, especially famous for its view of Shimla city.
Unmissable Things to do in Shimla: Shopping at Mall Road
You can't leave Shimla without doing a little (or lots of) shopping at Mall Road. This stretch of road is lined with the latest stores as well as small locally owned businesses. Moreover, you'll find lots of cafes and eating joints as well so you never go hungry! The area near Town Hall has branded stores whereas the stretch near City Point has local stores. Shopping at Mall Road is one of the unmissable things to do in Shimla that can't be excluded from any Shimla travel guide or Shimla itinerary.
What to Wear in Shimla
No matter when you visit Shimla, always be prepared for a little cold. I did my Shimla sightseeing in the month of September when there were still light drizzles and it got especially cold in the mornings and evenings. If you're visiting Shimla in the rainy months, carry a raincoat or umbrella. Whereas if you're taking a trip to Shimla in the winter months from November to March, carry sweaters and expect snow in the peak winter months. Carry thermals accordingly. In the summer, you'll need a light shrug for the evenings but the afternoons will be pleasant.

Visit Shimla, India

- Things to do
The 19th-century British colonial government couldn’t cope with the heat of the Indian summers and searched the foothills of the Himalaya for a cool retreat. Some 2,100 m (6,889 ft) above sea level, they found the ideal climate in the tiny hamlet of Shimla, which was conveniently surrounded by a pine forest for building materials. The village blossomed into a thriving British hill station, where croquet on the lawn, rounds of golf, and afternoon tea on the terrace whiled away the days.
Today, the government may be Indian, but the town still exudes a colonial charm. Local people are proud of Shimla’s faded grandeur, children run around in English-style school uniforms and judges leave the town hall in wigs and robes.
Traffic is restricted to the outskirts of Shimla, making it easy to explore on foot. I enjoy simply wandering through the streets, past the antiquated buildings and remnants of colonial times.
Things to see and do in Shimla
Arrive by toy train.
From Kalka, the train travels at a clunky 24 km (15 miles) an hour, through 103 tunnels and over 806 bridges. Ascending 2,169 m (7,116 ft) over five hours, it’s one of the steepest railway climbs in the world. These figures are impressive, but the views, right across the lower Himalaya, are the highlight of the journey. Stopping at 18 small stations along the route, you can catch sight of local life, such as the traders who dash to your window to offer you fresh chickpea dhal or a cup of chai.
Explore Shimla’s colonial streets
A constant stream of viceroys, soldiers, clerks and their families poured into 19th-century Shimla, creating a microcosm of British society. The comforts of a traditional British town were quickly built, including schools, churches, lodges and a post office. Most of the remaining buildings are now repurposed, but the mock-Tudor and baronial-style architecture has been affectionately preserved.
Starting at the buttermilk-yellow Christ Church overlooking the town, you can meander down the pedestrianized streets, which are trimmed with colonial frontages. The Gaiety Theatre, now an art gallery, once welcomed Rudyard Kipling and Lord Robert Baden-Powell to the stage. It’s difficult to miss the half-timbered town hall with its shingled eaves; it’s still the office of the Mayor of Shimla. The Viceregal Lodge, the summer residence of the Viceroy of India, is now an institute of advanced studies, but some rooms are open to the public.
Hike the foothills of the Himalaya
Many of Shimla’s hotel rooms boast views right across the foothills of the Himalaya, but to appreciate the scenery fully you need to explore on foot. A web of trails leads from the town, many well worn by farmers and traders before the British arrived. Shimla is surprisingly large, with new settlements mushrooming around the outskirts, so we recommend driving half an hour outside the town before beginning a guided walk.
One walk leads to the peak of Tara Devi Hill, and if you tackle it you’ll find at the top a 250-year-old temple dedicated to Tara Devi, the Hindu goddess of the stars. The 11 km (7 mile) walk follows switchback paths through thick pine forest, before clearing the tree line. From the peak you can see Shimla spread out below and the snow-covered higher Himalaya jutting out above.
Enjoy afternoon tea at Wildflower Hall
When Lord Kitchener, commander of the British Army, arrived in Shimla he noticed that many of his contemporaries had built elaborate summerhouses. Swiftly following suit, he commissioned Wildflower Hall, a 15-room mansion with an enviable position on a summit overlooking Shimla. The original mansion burnt down in 1915, but, ten years later, an even larger country house replaced it, which now runs as a luxury hotel.
Nodding to the days of Lord Kitchener, afternoon tea is taken on the outdoor terrace underneath fringed parasols. Tiny sandwiches and petit fours are served alongside local Himachali sidu (wheat-flour bread) and slices of akotri (gently spiced buckwheat cake). In the surrounding forest lies the hotel’s wild strawberry trail, a one-hour walk through cedar and pine trees where you might spot the iridescent monal pheasant, Shimla’s state bird.
Discover more of India’s foothills
Shimla is a gateway into the rest of the foothills region, with good — albeit windy — road connections. A day’s travel away, the foothills town of Dharamshala hosts the Tibetan government in exile. Here you can visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the official residence of the Dalai Lama and a refuge for sacred Buddhist texts. You’ll meet Tibetan refugees robed in traditional dress and be invited to try momos (steamed dumplings stuffed with vegetables).
From Dharamshala, a six-hour drive takes you to Amritsar and its lustrous Golden Temple. The holiest of Sikh shrines, the temple is surrounded by a marble water tank. Pilgrims travel from across the world to bathe in its sacred waters, said to have healing powers. The city is close to the border with Pakistan, where you can witness the daily border-closing ceremony, performed with military pomp and flamboyant marching.
Best time to visit Shimla
For crisp, clear skies and temperatures averaging a comfortable 59°F (15°C), October to November, then February to March are ideal times to visit. December and January can be quite cold and, with occasional snow flurries, are best avoided. April to June is the peak season for domestic visitors keen to escape the summer heat before the monsoon rains arrive in July.
Festivals, events and seasonal reasons to visit
- In early October, the Hindu festival of Dussehra commemorates the goddess Durga’s victory over a demon. The festivities culminate in the lighting of bonfires to burn effigies, accompanied by music and feasting.
- An integral part of Himalayan life, village fairs are used as a way to boost trade between townships. Shimla and its surrounding hamlets host a selection of seasonal fairs throughout the year, celebrating the first harvest, the end of the monsoon and the snow season.

Shimla is a heritage city and had been the British's favourite destination to spend the summer. And so, you can find a lot of British touch to everything here; from the buildings to the overall construction of the city, to even the food. The most popular heritage building here being the Viceregal Lodge, also known as the Rashtrapati Niwas was the residence of the Viceroy of India, during the British rule. The Shimla Heritage Museum is also an attraction for tourists looking for all historical insight into the city and the state of Himachal in general. The Heritage Walk will make you see the British architecture that had a strong Scottish influence, definitely visible at the Church on the Mall Road. Also, a walk through the ridge will make you see the beauty of the hills!
Shimla’s Religious Trail
Shimla is home to many temples and holy shrines. The most famous is the Jakhu temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, located on the top of the hill by the same name. The statue overlooks the Mall Road and can be seen from many parts of the city. A little farther from the city of Shimla, right on the outskirts is the Tara Devi temple. Legend has it that Goddess Tara Devi watches over the whole town and has a protective gaze, with the statement location of the temple on top of a hill. Shimla also happens to have its own Kali Bari! With the Kali Bari being older than 150 years, this abode of Goddess Kali is a popular tourist attraction and a spiritual hub both for locals and travellers. The oldest temple in the city remains the Laxminarayan Temple. It is dedicated to Maa Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and is flocked by lakhs of people every year.

The majestic snow-clad mountains beckon you to explore their rich canvas and paint the picture of green and blue and everything you want to. Shimla leaves such a mark on every holiday.
#Trivia: Located in the high passes of Himachal Pradesh, it is famously dubbed as ‘Home to the First Mall Road Of India’ or ‘The Queen of Hill stations’. Ironically Mall Road is a place where traders from near and far used to gather once a day or once a week to trade their goods, carrying their heavy loads up and down the steep hills of Shimla. Hence the name.
There are a number of things to do and places to explore if you want to take a holiday to the most coveted and popular tourist destinations in Himachal.
A booming summer capital of British India and now the Capital of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla can be seen buzzing with liveliness on all its touristy spots. So catch your breath, breathe in some freshness and let’s go on a trip to explore the local sightseeing options of this gorgeous hill station.
1. The Ridge
The famous Ridge is an absolute ‘must-stop’ and ‘cannot be missed’ popular central market and tourist spots of Shimla. It overlooks almost the entire city, with sparkling lights illuminating the night sky.
It is open all day long and does not require any entry fee. Please note that you cannot take your vehicles on the Ridge or on Mall road. There is an official parking area made at the bottom of the hill to ease this woe and you can then climb it to the top or just take the elevator.
It is connected from east to west along the Mall road and offers spectacular views on either side of the road.
#Trivia: A picture speaks a thousand words and the Ridge has been famously featured in some motion pictures like ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Black’, ‘Udaan’ and many others.
The Ridge is a huge open area that is buzzing with activity all day long. From horse rides to street food options, clicking a picture in traditional Shimla attire to short rides for children, you can simply relax and let your hair down at the end of a hectic sightseeing day.
You can visit the Tudor library, Scandal point on the west or Christ Church while at the Ridge.
2. Mall Road
We have deliberately kept the two (the Ridge and Mall Road) separate, although they are located one below the other. The Mall road of Shimla is a place buzzing with eateries and lots of shopping. The heart of the hill station, you can find a number of local shops and local bakeries that have been around for decades.
The small cafes lining the mall road are a delight to just sit and watch the world go by. While on the Mall road, you can walk the entire stretch to buy woollens, small handicraft items, gifts for kids, and much more.
One particular thing to notice is how clean Mall road is. Yes, clean! There are dustbins allotted at every 50 meters nearly to help you pitch your garbage away and not throw them on the road. The police are patrolling the area and are keeping a strict vigil about the health of their favourite Mall road.
While on the Mall road, make sure you drop by Johnny’s Wax Museum . A quaint little place that is made by a local guy called Johnny- it houses famous national and international personalities and is a beautiful place to enjoy some quiet time.
You can also visit Kali Bari temple , Gaiety Theatre and Town Hall while walking here.
3. Jakhoo Temple
Well-connected by a road leading up from the Ridge or a 2 km round trip up to the hilltop, Jakhoo Hill or Temple is home to an enormous standing statue of Lord Hanuman, its chief deity. Surrounded by countless monkeys, Jakhoo temple is a tranquil place to simply sit down and offer your obeisance to the lord.
To make travel easier, you can also take the Ropeway that starts from one end of the Ridge up to 8000 Ft. Jakhoo hill and back. The trip costs Rs. 300 to Rs. 500 per person but it is best to speak to the operator at that time. It is operational all day long but the last ropeway ride from the temple starts at 5:30 pm. If you miss it, you will have to travel all the way back on foot.
There is a huge space where the statue of the Lord stands tall (quite literally) and a temple as well to offer your prayers. A small children’s play area has also been made to keep your little ones engaged.
#Trivia: The 108 feet tall statue is nearly visible from all parts of Shimla. Towering in between the huge trees, this statue is a welcome sight for all those visiting the hill station.
4. Kalka-Shimla Railway
Built in 1898 to connect Shimla with other railway lines of India by the British, the Kalka-Shimla Railway is a must try while planning a trip to Shimla. The journey starts at Shimla and culminates in Shimla, making this narrow-gauge railway a gorgeous journey worth traversing.
It covers approximately a distance of 96 km from Kalka to Shimla, stopping at 18 stations along the way. It is a way of daily commute for many locals.
#Trivia: It was accredited by UNESCO in 2008 and added to the mountain railways of India World Heritage Site.
If you wish to take a ride through the mountainous terrain of Shimla, this approximately 4 hour ride is definitely worth it. A sight to reckon and keep in your memory forever.
5. Christ Church
An excellent example of neo-gothic architecture, Christ Church is an evergreen part of Shimla’s skyscape. Built in 1857, it is located on The Ridge and took nearly 3 years to complete. The gorgeous frescoes lining the interiors with stained glass windows and a clock tower are iconic to the Shimla skyline.
#Trivia: Home to the largest pipe organ in India.
The iconic tourist spot located around 17 kms from Shimla main city, is a travellers paradise. With multiple things to see and do, Kufri is the hub of all tourist activity of this hill station. Easily accessible by road, you can park your vehicles at the parking lot at the bottom of the hillock.
The only way to get to the top of Kufri hill is on a horse back or walking. The narrow rugged road is quite unsheathing to walk up and will exhaust you completely. Lined with rocks and uneven terrain, climb right to the top of the hill is quite steep and not worth climbing on foot.
Horse rides cost around Rs. 500 to Rs.800 per person to go back and forth and is an adventurous one indeed. Once on top, you can spend a good 2 to 3 hours roaming around and eating from the local shops on the hill.
There are a lot of games as well for children to explore along with knick-knacks to purchase. The viewing point from the top of the hill costs around Rs. 150 to see distant places from a telescope. If you are keen, you can explore this as well.
The Yaks are a sight to behold. These absolutely massive and heavy furred creatures just make you keep looking at them. A photo will cost approximately Rs. 100 or so but needs to be bargained.
Enjoy the freshness of the air and a gorgeous view of the surroundings when on top of Kufri.
7. Mashobra apple orchards
Another gorgeous place of interest in Shimla is Mashobra. Located around 20 kms from the main city, it is famous for its apple orchards.

The mist-bathed pine and cedar trees form a picturesque stream of beauty gushing down the valley of ‘Quieter Shimla’, attracting every tourist as they pass by. You can definitely enjoy a quiet time holidaying in Mashobra, heaven away from the buzzing Shimla city life.
Things you can do at Mashobra include quad biking, trekking, biking, rappelling, river rafting, bird watching, paragliding and much more.
8. Himachal State Museum
Located on top of Mount Pleasant, it is an iconic structure gracing the skyline of Shimla since 1974. It was built to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of the city. It gives you a firsthand record of the city’s glorious past that speak to you through its architecture, paintings, archaeological findings, handicrafts, sculptures, and much more.

One of the key attractions of Shimla, Annandale, also known as Annadale, is located around 4 kms from the Ridge. Once a playground for the British, it was used to play polo, cricket and also horse racing. It is now converted to a small golf course and is also used as a heli-pad for official dignitaries.
Things to see in Annandale is the Army museum and Cactus museum. Explore the beautiful expanse of the nearby gardens while touring Annandale.

Venture beyond the all-pervasive Mall and visit places like Lakkar Bazaar, Lower Bazaar, Tibetan Market, Ram Bazaar, Himachal Emporium, Minchy’s and Middle Bazaar, to land some finds. Q. What are the things to do in Shimla? A. Shimla, a year-round destination serves up a plethora of activities to pursue and places to sightsee. Some of your best options include a visit to the Ridge, Tattapani, Mall Road, visit to nearby Chail, Kalka Shimla toy train ride, Christ Church, Jakhu Temple, Green Valley on the way to Kufri, Naldehra, Mashobra, Himachal State Museum, Himalayan Bird Park, Bantony Castle, Fagu, Tara Devi Temple, Chadwick Falls, Gorton Castle, Kharapathar among others. Q. What is the local mode of transport in Shimla? A. Shimla has a substantial public transport system which includes private and state-run buses. They ply both inter-city as well in its outskirts. For buses to Naldehra or Kufri, board from the Lakkar Bazaar near Shimla’s ice-skating rink, though their frequency isn’t great compared to those within the city limits. It is, however, more advisable to hire a private taxi to get within the city unless it is not within walking distance. At least it gives you the flexibility to make stops along the way, enjoy the setting, take in mountain views and if needed stop at a cafe for some tea and Maggi. But for a cheaper all-round experience, public buses are a better bet considering you are travelling within Shimla. Q. Are there sufficient ATMs across Shimla? A. There are enough ATMs scattered across Shimla making it very easy to withdraw money and cutting down your need to carry excessive cash. You will find ATMs by Co-operative Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, Central Bank of India, Canara Bank, State Bank of India, UCO Bank, Union Bank of India, and Punjab National Bank to name a few.

One of these is Scandal Point, where couples on their Shimla honeymoon can be found strolling down to watch the sunset every day. Another popular similar viewpoint in Shimla to enjoy the sunset from, is the Jakhu Hill. This is also popular with photographers.
Watch a play at the Gaiety Theatre
Lovers of art and heritage will enjoy visiting the ancient Gaiety Theatre, now restored and part of a larger Theatre Complex. Spend some time reliving history as you watch a performance at the old theatre, or attend an art exhibition at within the theatre complex. You can also see the beautifully restored papier mache panels and Gothic lights of the Old Theatre.
Go shopping
Your Shimla holiday package will be incomplete if, apart from visiting the various Shimla tourist places, you don’t spend a few hours shopping for souvenirs in the local markets. Lakkar Bazar is the one of the best places to visit in Shimla for this purpose. Here you will find an array of wooden handicrafts, souvenirs, walking sticks, dry fruits, carpets, wool shawls, etc.
Plan a picnic
If you are planning to book a Shimla honeymoon package, a great way to spend some quality time together is by having a picnic lunch together in the Glen. Located on the outskirts of Shimla, the Glen is a popular picnic spot. It is a deep narrow valley surrounded by lush green pine and deodar trees. Further adding to its beauty are rolling hills and glistening streams, making it an ideal destination for photography lovers. Enjoy a leisurely time amidst nature with your partner and enjoy your picnic lunch. This experience can be pre-booked along with your Shimla tour package from MakeMyTrip.
Get yourself clicked
A photograph makes a great way to preserve beautiful memories. Preserve your memories of your Shimla honeymoon by getting yourself clicked with your loved one in a personal photoshoot, in a scenic location in one of the top Shimla tourist places. While you walk around enjoying the view and each other’s company, get candid shots taken that you can preserve for a lifetime. This amazing value add experience is a must add for a Shimla honeymoon package.
Go for a trek
If you are an adventure lover, then Shimla offers you many opportunities to enjoy nature through local day treks and hikes. You can trek from Shimla to Chadwick waterfall, or to Shailey peak, or even to the top of Jakhu Hill. Trekking in and around Shimla is a fun thing to do with your gang of friends. If you are a couple that enjoys adventure and offbeat experiences, you can even consider adding such an experience to your Shimla honeymoon package.
Try ice-skating
Shimla offers visitors the opportunity to venture onto the only natural ice skating rink in India. In fact this is also the only open-air ice skating rink in all of Asia. If you are booking a Shimla package during the months of December to February, this is definitely something you can try. This is a fun thing to do in Shimla for couples as well as families. If you enjoy ice skating or even wish to try this activity for the first time, then the peak of winter is the best season to visit Shimla!

Sleeper Picks: Masters Tournament

Chris Kirk (+17500) … Although it’d align with the theme of 2024, because the Masters Tournament rarely yields a longshot as its champion, it’s kind of absurd not to identify a shorter option who isn’t in my Power Rankings, but at some point, another longshot will be posing for photographs beside the 18th green as the sun sets on Sunday afternoon, because, well, golf. What Kirk is attempting to do this year is what defending champion Jon Rahm did last year – win both The Sentry and his first Masters in the same calendar year. Kirk prevailed at Kapalua just three months ago, and now he’s making his fifth appearance at Augusta National. Although his personal-best result is but a share of 20th place a distant 10 years ago, that he’s not a first-timer is key. But most importantly, he possesses his own perspective that keeps secondary how he performs inside the ropes behind the priorities on the outside. If you’re not familiar with his story of overcoming alcohol abuse and depression, do yourself a favor and read what his wife, Tahnee, wrote when Chris received the 2023 PGA TOUR Courage Award in November.
Collin Morikawa (+750) … No matter the competition, the betting boards tend to loosen the leash even for multiple major champions who aren’t in form. While that’s understandable, it’s also appreciated because there isn’t a more insular environment for a scuffling stud to reconnect with what he does best than Augusta National. The course rewards experience and course success more than any other. Despite the intensity on so many levels, it’s still a warm embrace for everyone who has felt it before. He currently checks a couple of boxes that would support the reach, but the unquantifiable is the most important. He’s 4-for-4 in the tournament with a solo fifth in 2022 and a T10 last year.
Rob Bolton | Talk of the TOUR Podcast | Masters Tournament
Corey Conners (+450) … The Canadian isn’t struggling like Morikawa but he’s coming up on eight months without a last top 10, yet he hasn’t missed a cut in almost 10 months. So, the ingredients are in place for Conners, but he hasn’t been cooking at the right temperature. Currently inside the top 20 on the PGA TOUR in greens in regulation, proximity to the hole and par-5 scoring. Meanwhile, and very much like Morikawa, Augusta National has been a reliable source of renewal and repeat. In four editions since the November edition in 2020, Conners has three top 10s.
Taylor Moore (+400) … After fulfilling his projection as a Sleeper for a Top 5 at the Texas Children’s Houston Open , this expectation in his second start of the Masters (T39, 2023) isn’t asking him to run it all the way back, but it’s leaning on his momentum upon arrival to take advantage of a nice kickback despite the smaller field. Prior to the close call at Memorial Park, he finished T12 in his title defense at the Valspar Championship. The fearless 30-year-old is 12th on the PGA TOUR in greens in regulation. He’s also cashed in 14 consecutive starts, so his nose to put himself in contention to pay off the prop is reliable.
Christo Lamprecht (+250) … With a field of only 89, plus value worth chasing isn’t as attractive as usual, so consider riding shotgun with the world’s top-ranked amateur and current No. 2 in PGA TOUR University. The tall drink of water from South Africa is one of five amateurs who qualified, as the winner of The Amateur Championship last year. If you can find a prop for who will lead the field in driving distance, plop a full unit down on him, but the more serious business is his ability to compete. En route to a T44 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship at home in December, he sat T3 and two strokes off the lead at the midpoint, and he already has made a cut in a major (T74, 2023 Open Championship). If you're curious about how often amateurs crack the top 40 at the Masters, it’s happened four times in the last five editions, the most recent of which was Sam Bennet (T16) a year ago.

2024 Masters prize money, purse: Payouts, winnings for Scottie Scheffler, each golfer from $20 million pool
More than history and a green jacket were on the line at augusta national on sunday.
Plenty of green was up for grabs at the 2024 Masters on Sunday -- not only in the form of the famed jacket awarded to the winner of this year's tournament but also in regards to the prize money being paid out from a record-setting pool. Augusta National Golf Club announced that the 2024 Masters would have a total purse of $20 million, marking a new tournament high by $2 million and the largest payout awarded to players at one of the nation's most pristine venues.
Scottie Scheffler was the greatest beneficiary of that increased purse, capturing the $3.6 million winner's share by capturing his second Masters championship in three years . Finishing 11 under with a 4-under 68 capping a tremendous tournament, Scheffler became the fourth-youngest golfer to win two green jackets and the 10th to win two in a three-year span. The $3.6 million prize is $360,000 more than 2023 champion Jon Rahm earned a year ago.
Runner-up Ludvig Åberg achieved quite a payday in his first career major championship. Pressing Scheffler down the stretch, the young Swede scored $2.16 million for second place, a larger sum than either Danny Willett (2016) or Jordan Spieth (2015) earned for winning the green jacket.
Scheffler and Åberg were not the only players set to receive significant green by week's end. In fact, the top three were set to receive seven-figure paydays, except Collin Morikawa struggled down the stretch and entered into a three-way tie with Max Homa and Tommy Fleetwood. Morikawa lost $320,000 by bogeying the last, though he increased the take-home of Homa and Fleetwood with the trio each taking home $1.04 million. This marked the first time that the Masters had five players bring home $1 million or more.
Those among the top 11 were set to see at least $500,000 deposited into their bank accounts, and the handsome payouts trickled down the leaderboard with every golfer inside the top 36 leaving Augusta National with six figures.
