Budapest Card: Is It Worth It? – Pros, Cons + How to Use It

The first thing my husband and I did when we landed in Budapest was to purchase the Budapest Card 72 hours. We were going to spend 3 days in Budapest so we wanted to be prepared and equipped. Along with booking a budget hotel in Budapest , also purchasing the city card can save you some good money and allow you to enjoy what the Hungarian capital has to offer, including tours and spas.

We used the card every day quite a lot, so now we are writing a full review to help you decide whether or not it’s worth it.

Which Budapest Card shall I choose?

Depending on how many days you are staying in Budapest and what are your preferences, there are different types of passes. So you go from a one-day pass (24 hours) to a 5-day one (120 hours). The 3-day Budapest city card of 72 hours comes also in two other versions, and 72h Plus.

So, obviously, if you are staying in Budapest for 2 days, the 48h Budapest city card is your best option. Similarly, if you are staying longer but think that you will only have three days to explore the city, you might as well buy Budapest Card 72h.

The Budapest city pass gives free entry to a number of museums and discounts on several other museums as well as activities. So your choice can also depend on what type of trip you want to have.

What can I do with my Budapest City Card?

As mentioned earlier, the Budapest city pass gives you free entry to several museums and a discount on others and on popular activities, from 10 to even 50 percent off. The discounts and free entries vary depending on which card you buy.

For example, the Budapest Card 72 hours and 72h Plus give you a discount on two dinners at one of the restaurants’ partners in the initiative, while you won’t have this with the 48h card.

All cards buy you free access to the Lukacs Thermal Baths, the Hungarian National Museum, the two galleries inside Buda Castle (Budapest History Museum and Hungarian National Gallery), Memento Park, a visit to Buda Tower, Aquincum Open Air Museum and the Hungarian House of Photography among others. You will also get a free guided walk around Buda and Pest.

Unfortunately, many of the main tourist landmarks are not included in the pass. You will have a discount in some, while others are simply not participating in the initiative.

Some of the most popular for which you will need to pay are the House of Terror, Matthew’s Church, the Hungarian Parliament, the Great Synagogue and Fisherman’s Bastion. At the Fisherman’s Bastion, you will have a 10 percent discount. Also, the panoramic point of Saint Stephen’s Basilica is not included. With the card, you will have 15 percent off.

Most of these are actually must-see landmarks for anyone traveling to Budapest for the first time. This is why adding the single tickets to the Budapest card price makes it pretty expensive.

The Budapest Card will also give you a discount on the Hop-On-Hop-Off tourist buses. These are managed by private companies, so check with them first if they are a partner in the initiative and how much is the discount.

Public transport with the Budapest City Card

Probably the number 1 reason that made us not regret buying the Budapest pass was free public transport. Having free buses, trams, and metro was not only great to save money, but also saving time and avoiding the hassle of always looking for the tickets.

Budapest Card 72h gives you also free transport between the airport and the city center. You can take the bus 200E to the metro station Nagyvarad tér on the blue line and then take the metro to your destination. Everything is included in the card price.

The other shuttle bus from the airport, n. 100E is not included in the Budapest pass. So you would need to buy it separately at the airport and pay either by card or with the local currency HUF. The bus 100E takes you directly to the city center and important metro stations such as Kalvin tér and Deak Ferenc.

If you choose the Budapest Card 72h Plus, you also have a free airport shuttle bus miniBUD and a free cruise on the Danube that the other cards don’t contemplate.

Where can I buy the Budapest Pass?

There are many ways and places where you can buy the Budapest city card. Probably the best option is to buy it online before leaving, so when you arrive, you need to take the receipt to one of the official stands and they will give you the card.

The places where you can collect your Budapest city pass are:

  • Budapestinfo Point at the Terminal 2A of Liszt Ferenc Budapest Airport
  • Budapestinfo Point at the Terminal 2B of Liszt Ferenc Budapest Airport
  • Budapestinfo Point at Deák Ferenc Square 1052, Sütő u. 2
  • Budapestinfo Point at Heroes’ Square 1146, Olof Palme sétány 5
  • Budapestinfo Point at Budavár Budapest Tárnok u. 15. (Holy Trinity Square pavilion)
  • Chocolate Museum Szamos, 1055 Budapest, Kossuth tér 10

Buy your city card online and save time!

It’s possible to buy the Budapest city pass also directly at these info points but be aware that at the airport they don’t accept any currency different from the Hungarian. So unless you already have the local money, you either pay by card or need to withdraw.

If you want to buy your pass at one of the info points in the city, you might miss some free transport that the card would likely give you, also from the airport to the city center.

How to use the Budapest City Card

Specific rules apply to how to use the Budapest card pass. This is a handy checklist on what to do when you buy the key and how to activate it.

  • With a pen, write the starting date with the exact time and your signature on the back. The card is valid only if it’s signed.
  • The card is valid for 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120 hours from the time you start using it, which is the time you wrote on the back.
  • Wherever you use it, they will check it. They never checked ours on the buses or trams, but always before getting on the metro.
  • You can register your card on the official website so you can have a free replacement if you lose it or gets stolen.
  • If you don’t use the card, you can’t give it back. You can use it on your next visit but within a specific time span. Enquire at one of the info points for more info.

Budapest in one day, plan well if you want to see the best of the city in 24 hours.

If you want to see Budapest in a day , you have to plan that day thoroughly to fully enjoy your stay, and yet not to get overwhelmed.

This page is for those visitors who only have 1 day or less to explore Budapest.

The trick is that don’t try to cram every sight, each historical monument, museum into a 24-hour program, otherwise you’ll be exhausted by the end of it, and you won’t have fun at all.

TIP: For a complete experience, visit both parts of the city: the major sights in Buda , mainly the Castle (home to the Royal Palace, the Fishermen’s Bastion, and Matthias Church, as well as some great museums, restaurants and cafes), and the city centre in Pest .

Happy exploration!

Budapest in One Day – Starting Fresh in the Morning

After you’ve had a substantial breakfast at your hotel or one of the cafes of Budapest , go and visit Castle District while you’re full of energy and up to walking.

The district, called Várnegyed in Hungarian, is situated on a hill at the Buda end of Chain Bridge .

The whole district, which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site , reflects medieval and baroque Budapest with many fine buildings and narrow cobbled-stoned streets with footpaths winding around the hill.

Chain Bridge and Basilica

TIP1: To be close to all the major sights stay in a Hotel in Budapest City Centre.

TIP 2: the Budapest City Card offers free, unlimited travel on all public transport services, free entry to the Lukács Thermal bath , free entry or discounts to a range of museums, other Budapest baths, and restaurants.

The 24-hour card costs 29 EUR (with collection points at Budapest Aiport or free delivery to your hotel/apartman.)

TIP 3: A convenient and inexpensive way of seeing all the major sights, is going on a Hop On Hop Off Bus Sightseeing Tour .

Modern, air-conditioned bus takes you to to a tour of the city showing you many sights and attractions. Audio guide in several languages is provided.

The main historical attractions in Buda Castle District include:

  • the Royal Palace ,
  • Matthias Church on Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér), and
  • Fishermen’s Bastion from where you can admire the fine view of the Danube with the bridges, the Parliament building on the Pest side, and the rolling Buda Hills.

fishermens bastion buda castle

Getting to Castle District: either take trams 4, 6 to Széll Kálmán tér then walk up to the district, or get on the Castle bus (No. 16, it departs from Deák tér – a metro hub of the city – if it’s more convenient for you)

or take the Funicular from Clark Adam Square at the Buda end of Chain Bridge (Lánchíd).

This way you get a closer view of the first permanent bridge of Budapest that became the symbol of the Hungarian capital.

If you find the 1 200 HUF ticket (700 HUF for kids, and 1 800 for a return ticket) for the Funicular (Sikló) too expensive, you can take the stairs starting near Clark Adam Square leading up to the heart of Castle District.

By the time you explored much of the Castle District you’ll be ready for a short rest at a cafe.

For a really good coffee made from freshly roasted coffee beans, pop in the Walzer Cafe in Táncsics Mihály utca (utca=street) near Matthias Church.

A variety of coffee drinks are offered that you can sip leisurely, while enjoying the cozy coffee house atmosphere.

The oldest coffee house and cake shop in Budapest, Ruszwurm is also in Castle District.

Find out more about Ruszwurm Cafe and other historic Budapest coffee houses.

Inner City Tour To see the Heart of Pest

Take the Castle bus to Deák tér to continue your Budapest-in-a day adventure in the inner city . Here the three metro lines of Budapest meet, so if you’re tired of walking, take one of the underground lines.

But if you’re still up for some strolling , keep your sightseeing on foot. You will be able to see more of the city’s beautiful buildings.

You have several options to go from Deák Square:

  • Head for downtown Budapest’s most popular square, Vörösmarty tér , that is just a 5 minute walk to the west from Deák tér. (cc. 400 m) and home to a classic coffee house and cake shop, Gerbeaud. Do stop for a slice of delicious cake : Dobos torte, Gerbeaud pastry, Sacher cake or a divine Hungarian dessert: Somló sponge cake.
  • You can turn south into Váci utca , a shopping street that connects Vörösmarty tér with the Great (or Central Market Hall) on Vámház körút at the Pest end of  the Liberty bridge.
  • St. Stephen’s Basilica (Szent István Bazilika) is at a stone’s throw from Deák Tér, to the north. It is the tallest building of Budapest and the lookout terrace on the cupola offers fantastic panorama.
  • For more scenic views hop on the Eye, a Ferris wheel set up at Erzsébet Square , a park with a small lake across the street from Deák tér

basilica budapest

But first, if you love shopping, check out Fashion Street in Deák Ferenc utca where a dozen of famous fashion brands (Tomy Hilfiger, Mexx, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren etc.) have outlets.

There’s also a Starbucks at the Deák tér end of the street, should you need more cafeine or snacks.

És Deli in Kempinski Corvinus is also a good choice for gourmet coffee, pastries, fruit juices, muesli and other healthy treats.

If you choose to take a look at St. Stephen’s Basilica , Budapest’s largest church, from there you can take Zrínyi utca that will lead you to Széchenyi tér at the Pest side of the Danube.

Alternatively, you can get here from Castle Hill by descending with the Funicular and walking over the Chain Bridge.

TIP: From Szécheniy square you can take this short walking tour of downtown Budapest .

If you’ve had enough walking then take tram 2 that travels from Vágóhíd utca in district IX. to Jászai Mari tér at Margaret Bridge (best to get on at Boráros tér or at the Central Market Hall stop at Szabadság Bridge).

The tram runs along the Pest side of the Danube offering a beautiful view of the Parliament, the Castle Hill and Gellért Hill in Buda, and the Danube bridges.

Alternative Tours – An Ideal Way to Get to Know the City

You can also do unique walk or bike tours in Budapest to see the most important sights within a short time. Local guides will tell you all the necessary facts about the sights and their history, adding interesting stories few know about.

New Main Street (Új Fő Utca)

If you have time do include a walk on Budapest’s new, partially pedestrianized street, the so-called New Main Street between Kálvin tér and Szabadság tér .

Stop for a taste of strudel in the First Strudel House of Pest Cafe on Október 6 utca, where you can sample this sweet Hungarian delicacy with a cup of coffee.

If you don’t have much time, do only one part of the street e.g. starting from Kálvin Square along Kecskeméti utca till Egyetem tér.

This is one my favourite parts of the city centre with lovely terraced cafes, bistros and shops.

This part was finished during the 1st step of the project. The 2nd phase included the refurbishment of Ferenciek tere that was completed in 2013.

Ferenciek tere

If you appreciate great coffee stop by Madal Espresso & Brew Bar at Fernciek tere 3 – it’s a new-wave cafe where coffe is prepared from a good selection of freshly roasted, specialty beans (bothe espresso and filter/AeroPress, Hario, Chemex).

Where to Eat During Your Budapest Visit?

The city centre offers ample choice where to eat a nice lunch or dinner. Avoid eating in Váci utca, try instead the neighbourhood of the Basilica : Sas utca and Hercegprímás utca is packed with restaurants, bistros, and street food bars.

You can try the Michelin star place, Borkonyha in Sas utca or the Akadémia Italia, a spacious two-storey Italian restaurant, cafe and gourmet shop right next to the Basilica.

Aszú Restaurant is also located in Sas u., where you can enjoy fine meals by pleasant piano music in the evenings.

They also have an outstanding wine list featuring some unique Hungarian wines. Laci?Pecsenye! (Sas utca 11.) is also good if you fancy hearty meat dishes.

  • Hungarian Restaurants in Budapest
  • Best Restaurants in Budapest

If you’re tight on budget try one of the cheap eateries or check out the offering of the food stalls in the Central Market Hall at Fővám tér near Liberty Bridge.

You can sample some Hungarian street food like lángos (deep fried dough with sour cream and grated cheese on top) or sit down in one of the restaurants specializing in hearty Hungarian meals like goulash or stuffed cabbage.

While in the market take time to admire the great architecture of the building the roof of which is covered with the famous Zsolnay tiles.

TIP: There’s a great wine restaurant called Borbíróság nearby the Market where you can taste fine wines from Hungary’s major wine growing districts, and try typical Hungarian dishes.

After lunch I would either return to my hotel room for a short nap, or go to one of the parks in Budapest to relax.

Thermal Baths – Historic Spas in Buda and Pest

Even if you’re here only for a day try to cram in a visit to one of the bath houses our city is famous for.

In the afternoon head for a spa to pamper yourself in the thermal pools and try some of the treatments and services (sauna, massage etc.).

I recommend the Széchenyi Baths in City Park, Gellért is also good and it’s more centrally located (at the foot of the Gellért Hill) than the Széchenyi, or one of the Turkish Baths : Rudas was nicely refurbished and a modernized (the rooftop jacuzzi offers a fantastic panorama)

Programs for Night, Cruising, Clubbing, Partying on a Boat

To crown your Budapest city break, and see the beautiful city scape illuminated by lights at night , go for a Cruise on the Danube.

During the 1.5-hour trip you’ll have a fine 4-course dinner and, on the cruise departing at 19.00 you can enjoy live music, too.

If you’re more into partying just head for district VII. (Király utca, Dob utca, Wesselényi utca) , the old Jewish quarter, that is packed with ruin pubs: crazy places in old, run-down buildings with mismatched, retro-style decor, affordable drinks.

The best-known is Szimpla Kert in Kazinczy Street (you can just walk in during the day to have a look, take photos, if you don’t want to have a taste of a night party there).

What to See & Do in Budapest

Separated by the Danube River,  Buda and Pest  form the two halves of Hungary’s capital, linked by the famous Chain Bridge since 1849. Despite being spread across both sides of the Danube, Budapest is a compact and very walkable city.

Follow our one day Budapest itinerary to see all the highlights of this wonderful city within your tight timeframe. If you prefer someone else to organize your day, check out this small group orientation walking tour of Budapest with a local guide.

One Day in Budapest Interactive Map

How to use this map – Use your fingers (or computer mouse) to zoom in and out. Click or touch the icons to get more info about a place, and click the arrow in the box top left to open the index. To add to your own Google Maps account, click the star next to the title of the map.

Catch the Sunrise at Fisherman’s Bastion

Fisherman’s Bastion is one of the most iconic places in the city and it’s certainly the best place to start your first day in Budapest. Although it looks like a fairytale castle, it’s actually a panoramic lookout tower located on the Buda side of the city.

Since it’s one of the top tourist spots in Budapest, try to visit as early as possible to avoid the crowds. If you don’t mind waking up early, watching the sunrise from Fisherman’s Bastion will surely leave you speechless.

From there, you can enjoy an incredible panoramic view over the Pest side of the city, including some of the top Budapest must-sees like the Hungarian Parliament and St. Stephen’s Basilica.

Top Tip : An advantage of getting up early is that you don’t need to pay an entrance fee for the upper towers. While most part of the Fisherman’s Bastion is free to visit, you need to pay 1,000 HUF to enter the upper part if you get there after 9am.

An image of Fishermans Bastion , A statue with a building and small turret in the back ground

Admire Matthias Church

Behind Fisherman’s Bastion is the Church of the Assumption of the Buda Castle, more commonly known as the Matthias Church, which was built between the 13th and 15th centuries.

At the end of the 19th century, it was completely renovated and has a predominantly neo-Gothic style with a distinctive slender spire and an intricately tiled and colorful roof.

An image of Mathias Church in front of a blue sky

Explore the Castle District

Sitting on top of a hill overlooking the city, Buda Castle is one of the most important historic landmarks in Budapest and it’s a must-visit on every Budapest itinerary.

The castle that once used to be the residence of Hungarian kings is now the home of many interesting museums, such as the Budapest History Museum and the Hungarian National Gallery.

While you’re there take the opportunity to explore the labyrinth cave system under the Buda Castle District as you learn about the history and unique geology of the caverns.

From Fisherman’s Bastion, it takes around fifteen minutes to reach the Castle on foot. Alternatively, if you don’t fancy walking up the hill, you can use the funicular to save your legs. Getting lost in the Castle District and soaking up the views is definitely one of the best things to do in Budapest in one day.

On your way down from the Castle, don’t forget to visit the Castle Garden Bazaar. It’s recently been renovated and consists of many beautiful gardens, exhibition halls and restaurants.

An image of an old fortified castle surrounded by trees

Cross Széchenyi Chain Bridge

After visiting the most important monuments on the Buda side, it’s time to explore the Pest side of the city. You can find eight bridges crossing the mighty Danube River in Budapest, each with different styles and characteristics.

Szechenyi Chain Bridge, with the giant stone lions guarding each bridgehead, is certainly the most famous bridge in Budapest.

It was the first permanent bridge built on the Danube River and it connects the Castle District with the city center on the Pest side. The bridge itself is really beautiful as well but nothing can beat the views you get from the bridge!

An image of the entry to a suspension bridge, with lion statues guarding the entry

Visit St. Stephen’s Basilica

No Budapest itinerary is ever complete without visiting the largest and most beautiful church in Budapest, St. Stephen’s Basilica.

The construction of the Basilica started in 1845 but it wasn’t completed until 1905. It was named after the first King of Hungary, Stephen, who was also the founder of the Hungarian state.

This Roman Catholic masterpiece is open every day from 9am to 7pm and the entrance is free. However, if you want to go up to the panoramic lookout towers, you need to pay a small entrance fee of 1,000 HUF. Although there is an elevator, you will still need to climb a few stairs but don’t worry, the 360-degree view will surely make up for it.

The lookout tower has different closing times in each season and unfortunately, it closes pretty early in the summer, at 6.30pm. Winter is the only period when the tower is open long enough to watch the sunset which is a pretty magical experience!

If you’re visiting in late November or December, you can also see one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Budapest in front of the Basilica from a bird’s eye view.

Top Tip : If you want to include a little break, head over to High Note Skybar which is one of the best rooftop bars in Budapest. It’s located right next to St. Stephen’s Basilica so you can get an up-close view of the Basilica from the terrace.

An image of a church with a green copper dome against a blue sky

Check Out Deák Ferenc Square

After visiting St. Stephen’s Basilica, head over to Deák Ferenc Square which is the heart and soul of the city center. From spring to autumn, the square is usually full of locals and tourists alike, making it one of the liveliest places in Budapest. You can find many restaurants and cafés with great outdoor terraces around the square.

Alternatively, you can just simply sit on the grass like many locals do while catching up with friends and doing some people-watching.

Deák Ferenc Square is also the starting point of Fashion Street, or Deák Palota , a pedestrian-only street lined up with luxury fashion shops and high-end restaurants. Right behind the square is a giant Ferris wheel called the Budapest Eye. If you haven’t had enough panoramic views yet, it’s the best way to see Budapest.

An image of a n inner city square with a large ferris wheel and lots of grass & trees

Stroll Along the Danube River

Taking a leisurely walk along the Danube River is a must, even if you only have one day in Budapest. From Deák Ferenc Square, you can easily walk back to Széchényi Chain Bridge within minutes.

After reaching the bridge, continue walking in the direction of the Hungarian Parliament along the Danube River. It’s a mere ten minute walk from the bridge to the Hungarian Parliament but most likely it will take a bit longer as you will want to stop a few times to soak up the views.

You will also pass by the ’60 Pairs of Shoes’ memorial on the Danube Bank, a tribute to the Jewish population who tragically lost their lives in the Danube by the Cross Arrow Military during World War II.

An image of the Danube river with the church on the banks and a bridge in the background

Visit the Hungarian Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament is easily the most beautiful building you will see during your one day in Budapest. The Neo-Gothic style Parliament Building is the seat of the National Assembly and one of the most important landmarks in Hungary.

It’s not only the tallest building in Budapest but it’s also the third largest parliament building in the world! It’s possible to visit the inside of the Parliament with a guided tour which is usually 45 minutes long.

The tour is really popular so it’s worth booking your tickets online well in advance, or book a tour with skip-the-line tickets and learn about the history of this stunning building with an expert guide.

An image of Hungarian parliament on the Danube river

Take a Ride on Tram #2

Going for a panoramic ride with tram number 2 is one of the cheapest, quickest, and most iconic ways to see the city.

The tram runs along the Danube River, from Margaret Bridge (the third bridge to the north) all the way down to Rákóczi Bridge (the last bridge to the south), and passes by many important landmarks.

Although it’s a panoramic ride, it doesn’t require any extra ticket other than a simple BKK ticket which costs 350 HUF, or your 24-hour Budapest Travelcard.

Top Tip : If you’re running short on time, get off at Fővám tér from where you can reach the Citadel, the next (and last stop) on this one day Budapest itinerary.

An image of a yellow tram

Watch the Sunset from the Citadel

There is no better way to finish off your one day in Budapest than watching the sunset from the Citadel, a 19th century fortification located on top of Gellért Hill, offering sweeping views over the entire city.

Getting to the Citadel is a bit of a stretch as it requires a fifteen to twenty minute uphill walk, however, it’s truly worth it. The Citadel is one of the most popular sunset spots in the city so you will not be alone, but the views will surely make up for the crowds.

Cruise the Danube

The city’s lifeblood and an important trade route, the Danube is Europe’s second-longest river.

Rising in the Black Forest of Germany and snaking its way through Central Europe to the Black Sea, some 2,850km later, the river and Budapest, often called ‘Queen of the Danube’, have a symbiotic relationship.

Take a city highlights evening river cruise to appreciate the might of the river and see Budapest from a different perspective.

Visit a Ruin Bar

The city’s ruin bars are fast becoming a must-do in Budapest. Ruin bars are budget pubs housed inside the huge and dilapidated prewar buildings of the Jewish Quarter of the city.

Szimpla Kert , which opened in 2003, was the first. Despite the crowds you expect in any tourist hot spot, it’s worth stopping in for a drink to see the impressive space for yourself.

On Sunday mornings, the place transforms into a farmers market selling street food and locally produced items such as salami, cheese, and honey.

Where to Eat in Budapest

Stand25 bisztró.

Just a few minutes from the Basilica is Stand25 Bisztro . This cool and casual bistro specializes in traditional but refined Hungarian food, inside a market hall come food court.

Must-try dishes here include the goulash soup, the layered potatoes, and the somlói galuska, a delicious rum-soaked local dessert.

Rosenstein Vendéglő

An award-winning, family-run restaurant, Rosenstein , serves Hungarian and Jewish classics, such as chicken dumplings and pan-seared foie gras with potato croquettes in a Tokaji wine sauce. Casual but stylish and classy, it’s worth a trip to the slightly out-of-town location for some of the best traditional food in Budapest.

Top Five Budapest Travel Tips

  • You can purchase a 24-hour Budapest Card for 6,490 HUF which grants you free use of public transportation, free guided walking tours, and free entrance to a few museums (including the ones in Buda Castle). However, unless you want to explore all the museums, it’s not worth buying it if you follow our Budapest one day itinerary.
  • Getting around in Budapest is really easy and the city is totally walkable. You will only need a few BKK tickets that can be purchased for 350HUF each(or 450 HUF on the spot), or buy the 24-hour Budapest Travelcard for 1,650HUF which covers all of Budapest’s public transport, including trams, but it does not cover the 100E airport shuttle bus.
  • A strange local tradition in Budapest dates from 1848 when the Hungarian revolution was overthrown by the House of Habsburg. To celebrate the victory in Vienna, Austrians everywhere clinked their beer glasses to show their joy.  Although 167 years have since passed, Hungarians still never clink their glass, and neither should you!
  • Although Hungary is a member of the EU, it has retained its own currency, the forint. Although you can pay with credit cards almost everywhere in Budapest, it’s worth having some cash in your pocket, and euros are widely accepted. Try to avoid using the yellow and bluecolored Euronet ATMs for picking up forints, as they use a poor exchange rate with additional fees.
  • If you’re a coffee lover, make sure to explore Budapest’s kávéház, or cafés. Many have been around since the early 16th century after the Turks brought coffee to Hungary, and they know how to make a great brew!

More Than One Day in Budapest?

If you have a bit more time in Budapest, add these top attractions to your itinerary;

Szechenyi Thermal Baths

Known as the ‘City of Baths’, Budapest sits on a fault line, and its thermal baths are naturally fed by 120 hot springs. The Szechenyi Baths are one of the most popular thermal baths in Budapest, offering three outdoor and fifteen indoor pools.

The Szechenyi Baths are also quite famous and get booked up very early, so book your tickets online well in advance .

Heroes Square & City Park

Heroes Square is a beautiful landmark consisting of several statues of important Hungarian national leaders, such as the Seven chieftains of the Magyars, the indigenous people of Hungary.

Right behind Heroes Square, you can find City Park, the biggest park in Budapest, which is home to Vajdahunyad Castle, Széchenyi Thermal Baths, and the Budapest Zoo.

Wander Andrassy Út

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the grand tree-lined boulevard of Andrassy Út connects the Bulgarian State Opera House and City Park and is best explored on foot for a chance to glimpse some of the city’s finest houses.

Danube Bend & Szentendre with Lunch with Cruise

If you take one day trip from Budapest, make it this highly recommended and well-organised day trip from Budapest.

Take an adventure back in time as you tour the Blue Danube and visit historic attractions, from the heart of the Catholic Church at Esztergom , the largest basilica in Hungary and the former royal residence of Visegrád.

With a professional guide to offer insights, this tour is the perfect opportunity to see  more of the Hungary in less time!

  • Explorer Pass
  • Budapest Pass
  • Combo Packages
  • Things to Do in Budapest

Are Budapest Cards and Passes Worth It?

There are a few different passes you can use to save money on a variety of popular attractions and activities.

If you’re planning to visit multiple locations or take more than one tour, these services are definitely worth consideration.

Here are a few of the most popular things to see and do with these tourist attraction discount passes:

  • Hop on Hop off Bus Tours
  • Danube Sightseeing Cruise
  • Fisherman’s Bastion
  • St. Stephen’s Basilica
  • Museum of Fine Arts
  • Kiscelli Museum
  • Hungarian Museum of Trade
  • The Ludwig Museum
  • Gellert Spa & Bath
  • Szechenyi Baths
  • Royal Palace
  • Buda Castle

Depending on which pass you choose, you should be able to save at least 20% - 50% off general admission prices for various historic landmarks, museums, points of interest, tours, and other activities.

If you’re wondering how each discount pass and/or combo deal works, here are a few details you should consider before deciding which pass is best for your needs.

Do you need transportation?

It’s worth noting that one pass includes a public transport ticket including airport transfer, while the other pass has simply a bus tour instead.

While a hop-on hop-off bus tour will take you to most of the notable landmarks in Budapest, public transportation could be a better option depending on where you want to go and what you want to see.

What are your plans?

Although some of these services are better for visiting museums, others focus more on taking tours of Budapest.

If you’re interested in having a guide to help you learn more about the city, chances are the pass providing several tours would be your best bet.

However, visitors who want to experience Hungary's beautiful capital at their own pace and without a guide should consider an alternative instead.

How much time do you have?

While each pass is valid for up to 6 days, the best way to save money with these services is by using them for as many different activities as possible.

If you have limited time to spend in Budapest, we recommend getting a combo package instead.

Combination deals typically include at least 1 to 2 tours and at least 1 notable attraction or activity.

BUDAPEST CARD

This is the most popular tourist pass in the city, and it includes free admission to the following activities for one flat price:

  • Public Transport ticket
  • Discounts of up to 50% on other attractions & tours

The Budapest Card is valid for increments of 1 to 5 days.

So, no matter how much time you’re planning to spend here, there’s a version of this tourist pass that likely fits your itinerary.

In addition to the 1 to 5-day pass options, there is also a 3-day pass that includes the following extra activities and services:

  • Budapest Airport Transfer
  • Danube River Cruise
  • Buda Castle Funicular
  • Matthias Church Admission
  • Hungarian Dessert

This 3-Day pass costs more than all the other options, but it might be worth it if you're interested in any of the above items.

If you purchase a longer pass, you’ll pay less per day than you would for a 1-2 day card, so it’s actually easier to save more money when you choose the longest option.

Here are just a handful of the great museums and services included for free with this tourist pass:

  • Museum of Fine Arts | €9.50
  • The Ludwig Museum | €4.75
  • Hungarian National Museum | €7.75
  • Budapest History Museum | €7
  • Hungarian National Gallery | €9.50
  • St. Lukács Thermal Bath and Swimming Pool| €12
  • Cityrama Walking Tour | €10
  • Mai Manó House | €4.50
  • Budatower | €4.50

In addition, the Budapest Card includes free public transportation on trams and metro lines (a €5 - €12 value) for the duration of time that the pass is valid.

Plus you can ride the Zugliget Chairlift for free. You even get free luggage storage.

As if that weren’t enough, they also offer discounts of 10% - 50% off various additional museums, tours, historic landmarks, and more, including some of the following examples:

  • Hop on Hop off Bus Tours | 20% off
  • Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden | 25% off
  • Gellert Thermal Bath | 20% off
  • Pinball Museum of Budapest | 10% off
  • Szechenyi Thermal Baths | 20% off
  • Budapest Bike Tour | 50% off
  • Hard Rock Cafe | 10% off
  • Aquaworld | 20% off

As you can see, even if there aren’t many locations included for free that you want to visit, the additional discounts might still make the pass worth consideration.

Here are the prices for each Budapest Card, as well as the price per day:

  • 1-Day Pass: €33
  • Price Per Day: €24.5
  • Price Per Day: €21
  • Price Per Day: €19.25
  • Price Per Day: €32

Purchase the Budapest Card online or learn more .

Purchase the Budapest Card in person .

Some of the tickets included with this pass are more than €10 per person, so it’s easy to see how you could rack up the savings just by using the card for 2-3 activities.

Here is an example of how you can use the 3-day pass to save some money while touring Budapest.

  • St. Lukács Thermal Bath | €12
  • 3-Day Public Transport Pass | €12
  • CSOPA Science Center | €10.75
  • Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts | €5.25
  • Memento Park | €5
  • Pálvölgy Cave | €6.50

Total Value: €83.25

Total Cost: €56

Total Savings: €27.25 (33% off)

Needless to say, if you can manage to fit even more activities into your day, you could save even more money!

With all of the additional discounts on family-friendly activities, this could be a great deal for families.

budapest one day travel card

That said, the main services included in the price of this pass are certainly museums and cultural landmarks.

In other words, if you’re not planning to take advantage of the Budapest Card discounts, this service is probably best for visitors who want to experience more of the culture of this city.

Where you can purchase the Budapest Card in person

At the airport:

  • BKK Customer Service Centre, Liszt Ferenc Airport Terminal 2A
  • BKK Customer Service Centre, Liszt Ferenc Airport Terminal 2B

In the city:

  • Budapestinfo Tourist Information Centre at Városháza Park Hütte
  • BKK Customer Service Centre at Deák Ferenc tér M

At train stations:

  • BKK Customer Service Centre, Keleti pályaudvar M station – M4 underground
  • BKK Customer Service Centre, Kelenföld M station – Őrmező exit
  • BKK Customer Service Centre, Déli pályaudvar M station

EXPLORE BUDAPEST PASS

This tourist pass is now fairly different from its competition, as you have the option to choose between 3, 4, 6, or 8 attractions.

Another big difference is that this pass does not include free access to public transportation.

While a hop-on hop-off bus tour is available, it’s not always going to be a great alternative to other forms of transport.

In addition to that, the Explorer Pass focuses primarily on a variety of different tours and includes free entry to far fewer museums and points of interest than its competitors.

Here are some of the best tours included:

  • Hop on Hop off Bus Tours | €22
  • Budapest Tuk Tuk Tour | €47
  • City Park Segway Tour | €32
  • Budapest Night Bike Tour | €25
  • Buda Castle District Walking Tour | €36
  • Jewish Heritage Tour | €30

Budapest Explore Card

Though the offerings may be slightly fewer, there are several interesting locations you can visit and events you can enjoy with this service, including some of the following examples:

  • Szechenyi Thermal Baths | €21
  • Gellert Thermal Spa & Bath | €22
  • Wine, Cheese & Charcuterie Tasting | €34
  • Hungarian Folk Dancing Performance | €24
  • Organ Concert in St. Stephen’s Basilica | €20
  • Budapest Caving Adventure | €44

In addition to these tours and other activities, the Budapest Explorer Pass also provides extra discounts for a few other services:

  • Dry Martini Budapest Boat Tour | 15% off
  • TimeTrap Escape Rooms | 30% off

Another notable distinction is that this tourist pass is available in increments of either days or activities.

In other words, you can purchase this service either for 1 to 2 days or 4 to 6 of the included tours, attractions, and more.

While the day passes are only valid for the amount of time specified, each activity pass is valid for 3 months, giving you plenty of time to use it at your leisure.

Although you’ll probably save the most with a day pass, you could also save a lot of money with the activity pass.

Here are the prices for each option and the cost per day:

  • Price per Attraction: €18.33/Adults | €13.66/Children
  • Price per Attraction: €18.75/Adults | €14/Children
  • Price per Attraction: €18.16/Adults | €14.83/Children
  • Price per Attraction: €18.63/Adults | €13.63/Children

This pass is not currently available as of April 2023.

As you can see, this tourist pass is a lot more expensive than its competitors, but that probably has something to do with the value of what is included in the pass.

After all, some of the examples we listed above are over €40 per person, so it’s not difficult to see how a pass like this could save you plenty of money.

The nice thing about the activities included is that while some require a lot of physical activity (like the caving adventure), others are very relaxing (like the Wine, Cheese & Charcuterie Tasting).

 width=

To save the most possible money, make sure to use their activity passes for services with the highest ticket prices.

As you may have noticed, the prices per attraction don't necessarily decrease if you get a pass with more options.

The best deal for adults will be a 6-attraction pass (€18.16 per activity), while the lowest price for children comes from the 8-attraction pass (€13.63).

Of course, the 3 attraction pass is only a few cents more per attraction, so even if you only want to use this service for a few activities, it's still a good deal.

While there are a lot of family-friendly activities and services included with the Budapest Explore pass, many of the best things to do are aimed at adults.

If you’re visiting Budapest with your family, you’ll have to compare and contrast each of the activities included before making up your mind.

However, it’s fair to say that this pass is definitely a safe bet for couples or visitors traveling on their own.

BUDAPEST PASS

This is more of a prepackaged pass, as it includes a few specific activities and nothing else.

Thankfully, the activities included with this no-frills pass are popular enough that you might want to consider it.

budapest one day travel card

Here's what's included with the Budapest Pass:

  • 2-Hour Danube Sightseeing Cruise w/ Drink
  • Grand City Tour of Budapest & Hungarian Parliament
  • Budapest City Audio Guide
  • 10% off additional activities

The 10% discount is valid on any other tour, activity, or attraction that Tiqets offers in Budapest. This includes options such as the following:

  • St. Stephen's Basilica
  • Hungarian Dance Performance
  • Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tours
  • Széchenyi Spa Tickets
  • Great Synagogue
  • €62/EU Adults
  • €74/Non-EU Adults
  • €37/EU Youth (7-11)
  • €43/Non-EU Youth (7-11)
  • €23/EU Children (0-6)
  • €29/Non-EU Children (0-6)

Purchase the Budapest Pass or learn more .

The only problem with this type of tourist pass is that the amount you can save is very limited.

Most of the time, you'll only be saving 10% - 20% off on everything included.

That said, if you're looking for an affordable pass that covers the cost of all the activities and sites you want to enjoy, this is a quick and easy way to save at least a few euros.

COMBO PACKAGES

If you’re looking for an alternative to tourist passes, this section provides details about combo deals which typically include 3 to 4 activities or attractions for one flat price.

Most of these packages are offered by hop on hop off bus tour companies, which means you can expect their tours to be the primary services included.

Big Bus Tours

While most deals this company offers aren’t technically combo packages, 1-Day, 2-Day, and 3-Day tickets include additional activities you may enjoy.

Budapest Card: 3-Day Itinerary To Save Money + Everything You Need To Know

Budapest is the kind of city where one visit is never enough.

After my first trip to Budapest in 2015, I knew I had to go back. And finally, that dream was fulfilled.

There’s a lot to see and do in Hungary’s capital. And it can seem daunting trying to plan a short trip to Budapest. I’ve taken all guesswork out for you. Use my hours of planning and research, plus first-hand experience on the ground, to make your next trip easy and breezy.

I used the Budapest Card to streamline my trip and squeeze the most out of every minute. But in the wrong hands, the card can be a waste of money. Like most tools, it’s all about how you use it.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Budapest Card, including my grab-and-go 3-day itinerary.

budapest one day travel card

Budapest Card benefits include:

  • Free unlimited public transportation within city limits (200 buses, 32 trams, 15 trolleys, 4 metro lines)
  • free entrance to 20+ museums and attractions
  • free walking tours in Pest and Buda
  • free thermal bath entrance ( St. Lukacs Thermal Bath )
  • free cave entrance
  • discounted luggage storage
  • 5-90% discount on sightseeing, programs, gastronomy, travel

For the special 72-hour PLUS version, it has all the same perks as the standard card PLUS:

  • free door-to-door airport transfer by miniBUD
  • free Danube river cruise by Legenda Duna Bella
  • free return ride on the Buda Castle Funicular
  • free admission to Matthias Church (inside Buda Castle)
  • free Hungarian dessert ( Molnár’s kürtőskalács )

The current prices as of May 2023 are:

  • 24 hours: €33
  • 48 hours: €49
  • 72 hours: €63
  • 96 hours: €77
  • 120 hours: €92
  • 72 hours PLUS: €96

I found the list of attractions and restaurants that support the Budapest Card a bit overwhelming at first. But don’t fret… they offer a searchable directory that can be filtered by keyword, topic and discount level. This was my starting point for building out an itinerary for Budapest.

I also suggest downloading (and/or printing) the official companion guide for a handy 1-page overview. This makes it easy to build out your itinerary, and tick off these items, so you don’t miss anything important.

budapest one day travel card

Tip: Unlike other tourist discount cards that are timed by the day, the Budapest Card is timed by the hour from first use. If you start a 24-hour card at 4pm on Friday, it will expire at 4pm on Saturday. This gives you better value and flexibility than day-based alternatives.

Is Budapest Card Worth it?

Note: The Budapest Card price increased recently in May 2023, and it was better value before . Now you have to use it more strategically to get the most value out of it.

The answer to this question depends on how long your card is valid and how often you use it. If you just use it for 1 or 2 attractions, you won’t get the most bang for your buck. But if you’re willing to cram a bunch of fun activities and museums back-to-back for a few days, then you’ll be sure to get your money’s worth.

The secret to getting the most out of your Budapest Card is to plan your itinerary well before your visit, so you know what you want to see and can check the opening hours and transport options, saving time and stress. I don’t recommend flying by the seat of your pants.

I’ve created a handy 3-day itinerary below based on my experiences in Budapest.

budapest one day travel card

The downside: Some of the most popular attractions (like the Hungarian Parliament Building, Matthew’s Church and the House of Terror) are not included in the card. It seems they try to push tourists towards lesser popular attractions, maybe in an attempt to reduce overtourism.

Which Budapest Card Should I Get?

That depends on how long your visit is. You can’t really do Budapest justice in 1 or 2 days, so I recommend at least the 72-hour card (or longer). I went with the 96-hour card.

If you’re staying longer than 3 days, then I suggest cramming all your card-related sightseeing in a compact 3-day window, and then keep your other days open for sights that aren’t supported by the card at a slower pace (such as the Hungarian Parliament).

Budapest Card tips

  • Plan your trip in advance so you know how much time you’ll have at each location, transport options, and the best times to visit.
  • Try to book get a card with a longer duration, so you have more time to explore the city and its attractions.
  • If you need airport transfers, book the 72h Plus Card. You’ll save a bit.
  • Sign your card on the back once you receive it, along with the starting date and hour (in 24-hour format) – it’s not valid otherwise.
  • Cards can’t be returned or refunded. However, if you bought one and didn’t use it, you can use it later or on your next visit. Just be aware that Budapest Cards have a maximum validity of 1 year from May. So if you buy the card in August 2023, it can be used until 1 May 2024.
  • Museums are generally closed on Monday, so check the opening hours on each of the official museum websites.
  • Once you purchase your card, it’s important to register it online (optional). It only takes a few minutes, and if your precious Budapest Card is lost, you can get a replacement card from the Budapest Infopoint with the same validity as the original card, topped up with all the unused benefits.
  • Use CityMapper to plan your transport around Budapest. Get live public transport updates and intuitive routing, all inside a free, user-friendly app. It’s a lifesaver!

3-Day Sightseeing Itinerary with the Budapest Card

This itinerary mixes a range of activities and attractions to give you a broad taste of Budapest, including history, culture, food, nature and relaxation. I didn’t focus on the discounted restaurants included with the Budapest Card, but opted for vegan-friendly eateries that have a solid track record for quality.

Arrive –  reach Budapest by air, train or bus in the afternoon and pick up your Budapest Card at the relevant location. If possible, head to your hotel or apartment and check-in first, so your hands are free. I recommend picking up your Budapest Card from Varoshaza Park as the staff are very knowledgeable and can help you fine-tune your itinerary and answer any questions. Remember to sign the back of the card.

5pm – Self-guided walking tour . Take a glance down the famous Fashion Street , wander through Elizabeth Square , rub the belly of The Policeman for good luck, and finish by heading west towards St. Stephen’s Basilica, which houses the country’s most sacred relic, the mummified right hand of the first king of Hungary.

budapest one day travel card

Or if food is what tickles your pickle, then wander over to Molnár's kürtőskalács , and try the famous kürtőskalács (Székely festival spit cake, or “chimney cake”), a hollow bread-based dessert. Use your Budapest Card for a 20% discount (or free dessert with 72-hour PLUS card).

7pm – Dinner at Tahina Bite Vegan Food . Mouth-watering Middle Eastern classics like hummus, tabbouleh and falafel. 95% of the menu is gluten-free, and all dishes are free from processed sugar and soy.

8:30pm  – Rest up afterwards because the next 3 days will be go, go, go!

10am – Zugliget Chairlift (Libegő) to Erzsébet (Elizabeth) Lookout Tower .Gently soarup the side of János Hill to the top station , over a period of 15 minutes, enjoying panoramic vistas of Budapest along the way. From the top station, it’s about a 10-minute walk north up a steep road to Elizabeth Tower. Entry to the tower is free.

The chairlift base station can be reached by bus 291 (final station). This chairlift is operated by the public transport provider, BKK , so the entry ticket is included with the Budapest Card.

1:45pm  –  Classic Buda Walking Tour (meeting at Holy Trinity Statue in front of Matthias Church). This tour covered a fair amount of the Buda Castle complex, but only the exteriors. I found the information provided by the guide was a little inaccurate at times, so best to fact-check anything that sounds unusual. Tour with card is free.

budapest one day travel card

4pm – Castle Museum . Located in a wing of the former Royal Palace, visitors can tour the halls to discover the museum’s unique treasures and exhibitions and gain insight into Budapest’s rich history. The museum is only open until 6pm, so you’ll need to go double speed to see everything! Entry with card is free.
