What is a “Repositioning Cruise” (definition)

“Repositioning Cruise” is a one-off sea/ocean voyage that cruise passenger ships make when transferring from one operational region to another. Usually, this is done in Spring and Fall, often each year. But there are some exceptions to these “usual times”. Your off-season vacations will be marked by discounted cheap rates, big (yet not crowded) cruise ships, lots of “lazy leisure days” to enjoy the tranquillity of the sea.

Ship relocation deals are the preferable option for “highly addicted” travelers to enjoy a truly special and most affordable sea cruising vacation. The special ship relocation voyages always feature a one-way itinerary (connecting different embarkation and disembarkation ports) since cruise ships relatively often change their sailing areas due to economic reasons.

Another prominent feature of all these “ship transition cruises” deals is the bargain price – they all are really really cheap in comparison to the ship’s regular cruise rates. Repositioning deals are rarely called that way by travel agents or in companies’ brochures. One of the most popular substitute names officially used by the industry’s representatives is “Discovery Voyage”.

The list of synonyms for repositioning voyages includes: “Relocation Cruises”, “Transit-” or “Transition Cruises”, “Crossings” (also with “Eastbound” and “Westbound”). Of course, the most traditional (by definition) is “One-Way”, and also by destination – “Panama Canal”, “Suez Canal”, “Transpacific” and “Transatlantic”.

The reasons to book a relocation voyage are so many. These special offers are “different” voyages that offer unique opportunities like Atlantic Ocean crossings, visiting and sailing Alaska, Hawaii, and transiting Suez Canal and Panama Canal’s new locks (a true engineering miracle).

When considering this unique type of travel vacation-themed as “Repositioning Cruises”, know that it’s all about long and exciting voyages, transiting famous canals, crossing the world’s biggest oceans. You’ll be most probably sailing coast to coast, often from one sea to another. It’s about comfort and impeccable service on some of the world’s best cruise liners. It’s about all the fun you can get on up to 3-week transitions visiting different continents, changing cold with warm climates. It’s about a resort-type swimming pool and Jacuzzi experiences, gourmet cuisine, bingo and casino thrills, onboard duty-free shopping. Some ships even offer rock climbing, surfing, Zip-lining, hovering, and ice-skating at sea.

Why take reposition cruises?

• It’s a longer (often Transoceanic) voyage
• The itinerary has only a few ports of call. Destinations are from the “special and exotic” category, featuring Africa, South America, Transatlantic and Transpacific, US East Coast and the Caribbean, often Asia and Australia.
• Top-option for “best fun” experiences on bigger passenger ships, with a lot more sea days than on a normal voyage.

Still, whoever is blessed with enough free time and an adventurous spirit may enjoy each year at least one of the not-so-many repositioning cruise ships.

Repositioning cruise – examples, benefits, disadvantages

• Passenger ships sailing during the hot summer in Alaska relocate in the Fall to the Caribbean Sea region through Panama Canal, or to Hawaii and then to Australia or Asia for their winter seasons.
• Ships from Northern Europe sail to the Mediterranean Sea or across the Atlantic Ocean to operate roundtrip itineraries leaving from USA ports (Florida and New York mostly) or to the Caribbean for round-trips from Barbados or Puerto Rico.
• Ships move from South America to Florida (for the Caribbean) or Transatlantic to Europe (Baltic or Mediterranean) in early Spring.
• Search for ships sailing along Africa’s east coast. In the Fall they will be departing from UK (Southampton, mainly) to South Africa (Cape Town or Durban). In spring they will return (usually departing from Cape Town) to the UK or the Mediterranean. Such sailings are offered mainly by MSC and luxury ships.
• They are cheap! The lower to absolutely cheapest price is the most important factor for the popularity of these special deals. The average cost of a repositioning cruise is up to 50% less compared to a typical round-trip sailing from the same port. And the best index is the “Price Per Person Per Day” – it could be as low as USD 40!
• All relocation cruises offer a full set of entertainment and dining options onboard – they are just like the regular ones. This is the perfect chance to sample all the stuff on board since you are going to spend so much time at sea. There are even more onboard activities while ships reposition! The list of the “bonuses” includes guest lecturers, top comedians, and numerous themed activities and games to entertain guests.
• And yes – the repositioning cruise ships are almost always not crowded.

Disadvantages

• Too much time aboard the ship instead of visiting different ports of call (sea intensive as opposed to port intensive). Some find it pretty boring.
• Embarkation and disembarkation not in the same port increase the expenses as to additional flight fares added to the cruise ticket price.
• Spending a lot of time aboard the ship might tempt you to enjoy more “money spending fun” by splurging on bar drinks and gambling in the casino.
• The duration of relocation cruises – some last up to 18 days, and most people cannot afford so much time off work.
• You may experience an occasional “bumpy ride” due to rough waters (especially on smaller ships), and often “choppy weather” as your ship transits from one part of the globe to another. The “changing weather” issue will also have an impact on your packing list.

What time of year are the cheapest Repositioning Cruises?

Most of them are operated in Spring and Fall. Some exceptions are a few ship relocation itineraries in late-August, and some very rare very late re-position sailings in December, January, or February. The best and most busy months with readily available and cheap relocation cruise deals are April-May and September-October.

What are the best Repositioning Cruises?

All these company decisions are made with economic considerations in mind. Companies do cruise ship repositioning to improve profits by departing from different homeports or to more attractive destinations.

Some of the companies relocate vessels each year crossing the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and the USA (Florida, New York, Boston) or South America (Brazil, Argentina).

Some ships reposition between Alaska and Australia (Transpacific) or between Alaska and Florida (with Panama Canal transits). Some lines offer to transit through Suez Canal on repositioning between Europe and Asia (the Red Sea or East Asia).

So what you gotta do is choose a destination and departure port. If you are a big fan of a particular company – just search its page here – it is that simple. If you ask “the best of the best” not as best prices, but rather as experiences, the simple answer to this question is “luxury cruises”. Generally, luxury cruise deals offer smaller ship cruise travel marked by sophisticated, all-inclusive, superb service experiences.

The list of top luxury lines includes Crystal, Seabourn, Azamara, Oceania. The more “affordable luxury” brands are Cunard, Celebrity, Princess, Holland America. The Ultimate Guide to Transatlantic and Repositioning Cruises for 2022/2023

Whether you’re a perpetual cruiser with RCI Pinnacle Club Loyalty benefits (700 cruise days in the bag and counting!) or a newbie, tentatively dipping your toe into the world of cruising, we have something that should be of interest to you – Transatlantic and Repositioning Cruises.

OK, before you click to exit the page or throw out the usual reasons why you would never, ever consider a Transatlantic cruise (limited ports of call, limited dates and the image of it being a floating nursing home), let me tell you a little about the unparalleled benefits of Repositioning Cruises.

Transatlantic/Repositioning cruise bargains

The first thing you’ll notice is that Transatlantic and Repositioning Cruises are all very attractively priced.

You can get an inside cabin for $50 per day or less – about half the price of a normal cruise.

There’s a reason for this, and it’s all about supply and demand.

In April, the majority of cruise ships based in Miami, Port Canaveral and Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale (three of the top four busiest cruise ports in the world) move most of their ships away from Florida and the Caribbean.

They head to Alaska, Europe/the Mediterranean, Norway, the Baltic, South America (via the amazing Panama Canal transit), Asia, Sydney and Australasia.

This is to take advantage of the summer cruising opportunities in these more seasonal temperate zones.

Co-incidentally, it also moves most of the cruise ships out of the Caribbean during hurricane season, which runs from 1 June to 30 November each year.

En masse, in a period of about six weeks, you may have a whole flotilla of cruise ships crossing the Atlantic or heading up to Seattle for the summer Alaska cruise season.

Suddenly they need to find tens of thousands of cruisers willing to take a one-way cruise in that narrow window of time.

How do they boost demand?

By offering this glut of luxury cruises at rock bottom prices.

The ships and crew are re-locating anyway so every cabin that is occupied with a paying passenger is a plus.

At the end of the summer cruise season, the whole saga is reversed.

No-one wants to be cruising the Mediterranean, Norwegian Fjords and frozen tundra of St Petersburg in winter, so back the ships sail to warmer winter climes.

These Transatlantic or Repositioning cruises take place mainly in October.

In both repositioning seasons, most cruises remain only partly full, especially on less desirable routes or less popular ports such as Tampa and Galveston, TX.

It’s worth hanging on and picking up a last minute bargain or negotiating a cheeky upgrade if you have already booked an inside cabin and prices have since dropped drastically.

All-inclusive food and drink

While many 7-day cruises call in at a different port every day, Repositioning Cruises may go for 5 days or longer without any land in sight.

Consequently, you will be having all your meals and drinks onboard.

It makes sense to opt for an all-inclusive package to avoid racking up a hefty bar bill.

Often cruise lines offer free all-inclusive drinks packages as a perk for early booking.

Do the math and make provision for eating and drinking more on a Repositioning Cruise than on other types of cruise.

Complete rest and relaxation

Travelers often complain that they need a vacation after enjoying a 14-day trip packed with new places, attractions and must-do experiences.

It can be exhausting!

Not so a Transatlantic or Repositioning Cruise.

You have 11-14 days (depending on your itinerary) to chill out with 3 or 4 ports of call at the beginning and end of your cruise.

That gives you lots of time to sunbathe, read a whole library of books (load up your e-reader with free library books before you leave!), visit the spa and do as much or as little as you choose.

It’s hard to beat a Relocation Cruise when it comes to enjoying a complete rest in luxurious surroundings.

Quality family time

Cruising as a family is a fantastic experience.

Every cruise ship caters for youngsters with supervised activities, special play areas and even accompanied dining in some cases.

Parents can look forward to some adult time together without their young charges.

At other times you can play in the pool, play games or make use of the onboard amenities as a family.

Teenagers often have their own club and activities for hanging out together, but you need to check this is the case on any specific Repositioning cruise you are considering.

Less crowded amenities

Following on from the fact that most Transatlantic and Repositioning Cruises are not fully booked, you’ll find that sailing on a cruise ship that is only 80% full has its benefits.

Theater seats are available, buffet dining is more civilized, fitness equipment is readily available and you can easily book an appointment in the spa.

Unlimited luggage

Many people with winter homes in Florida or summer homes in Europe actually use Transatlantic and Repositioning Cruises to go to and fro between homes.

The main reason for this is that on a cruise you have virtually unlimited luggage.

I did a Transatlantic cruise once and had a Balcony Stateroom next to a family who were relocating from Tampa to Malaga, Spain.

When we peeked over the railing into their balcony we saw 24 suitcases of all sizes neatly jammed in.

While excess baggage costs a fortune by air, cruise ships are unlikely to turn you away if you arrive with multiple suitcases and bags.

Check the list of what is not acceptable on cruises, including some electrical items or anything with a heater element such as an iron or tea kettle.

I believe bicycles need to be pre-approved and specially packed, but apart from that it seems you can cruise with as much luggage as you can get to the port, as long as you are prepared to stow it in your cabin (or on your balcony!).

The other thing to note is that you do not have to go to the final destination port if you don’t want to.

In the above case, the cruise terminated in Barcelona, but the family got off two days earlier in Malaga, Spain.

There is no refund for the lost days and you must notify the ship of your intention to disembark early.

However, there is no waiting time – just get off after breakfast, hop in a taxi and you’re home and free!

Avoid jet-lag

Another benefit of a Transatlantic Cruise is the fact that you will gradually adapt your natural time clock or Circadian rhythm to the time difference between ports as your cruise.

For example, if you sail from Miami to Rome, there is a 6 hour time difference as Europe is 6 hours ahead of Florida.

If you travel by air, your body has to adapt to this sudden change and your sleep pattern, energy levels, hunger and eating habits can be out of kilter for a week or more.

With Transatlantic Cruises, the ship announces a one hour time change every couple days.

By the time you reach your destination, your body will be fully adjusted to the new time zone.

One-way cruises

Inevitably, Repositioning Cruises are one-way cruises, not out-and-back as in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

Some travelers see this as an advantage; others see it as a negative point. You will need to add the cost of a return flight to get you home.

However, having spent almost two weeks reaching your international destination, it is only sensible to stay a few days and do some sightseeing before flying home.

Many Transatlantic cruises terminate in Barcelona, Rome, Southampton (80 miles from London), Copenhagen (Denmark), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Cork or Dublin (Ireland), Bremerhaven (Germany), Brest (France), Lisbon (Portugal), Mykonos and Athens (Greece).

What better way to arrive in style, fully relaxed and ready to enjoy some walking, shopping and sightseeing before returning home.

What to expect on sea days

Transatlantic and Repositioning Cruises do a wonderful job of adding new experiences and enrichment lectures to keep everyone busy on sea days.

You may find a renowned sports personality, naturalist, celebrity chef, travel writer or lecturer who will give a series of talks or presentations on sea days.

Topics can range from travel to nature, stargazing, Reiki, art appreciation, learning to write a novel, beauty and wellness and more.

Activities following popular games shows are also organized, often using the ship’s staff.

Programs such as Masterchef are replicated with daily cookery sessions by volunteer cruisers and staff all competing for the coveted “Masterchef at Sea Apron” or whatever.

They are given a set of surprise ingredients and 30 minutes to make something edible for the judges to sample.

The audience votes on who will be eliminated from the following day’s round.

You’ll find dance classes, bridge classes, cookery demos, casino classes, crafts, art auctions, informative jewelry and watch lectures, wine tasting, quizzes, book reviews, team games, stargazing and other entertainment to keep you hopping from one event to the next every day.

Being part of a daily program makes it easy to meet fellow cruisers with similar interests and make new friends.

Is a transatlantic cruise right for everyone? Not necessarily, especially for anyone prone to moderate to severe sea sickness. However, for those who love sea days — and many cruisers do — a crossing can offer an uninterrupted "floating resort" experience; plus, it provides the added bonus of delivering you to Europe or returning you home without a cramped transatlantic flight.

Which cruise lines offer transatlantic crossings?

While Cunard Line is most famous for its weekly crossings between Southampton, England, and New York City — which sail from April to December on its ocean liner Queen Mary 2 — pretty much every major cruise line offers transatlantic crossings.

These generally occur in the spring (late March to early May) and fall (September to November). In the spring, ships are repositioned from the Caribbean to Europe, and in the fall, vessels sail from Europe to the U.S. to begin Canada-New England and Caribbean itineraries.

Also known as repositioning cruises , these sailings are usually longer than a traditional crossing and often include several port calls beyond the city of embarkation and disembarkation.

Even better, cruise fares for these itineraries are typically one-third to one-half the price of a cruise of the same length that visits a new port daily. This makes them a great deal for travelers looking to settle into shipboard life rather than just sightsee.

These types of transatlantic/repositioning itineraries are offered by Azamara, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Seabourn, Sea Dream Yacht Club, Silversea, Star Clippers, Windstar, Viking and Virgin.

When is the best time of year for transatlantic cruises?

The best time to take a transatlantic cruise depends on what you're looking for: great weather, smooth seas, the best price or specific ports of call.

Generally speaking, May, June and July are recommended for warmer weather and gentler seas — before the Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August, September and October — although storms can arise any time of the year.

March, April and November — while not ideal due to cooler temperatures that can limit on-deck and poolside enjoyment — are a good option and a terrific value. This is especially true if the ship's route is a southerly one between Florida and the Mediterranean rather than between northern Europe and New York.

As noted above, the best prices are generally in spring and fall for repositioning cruises. These itineraries may also visit several appealing ports in the Mediterranean or Caribbean as well as call on the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Iceland or Bermuda in the Atlantic.

How long does the crossing take?

It varies. The classic nonstop transatlantic itinerary aboard Queen Mary 2 is a seven-night voyage between New York and Southampton (and vice versa). On the other hand, transatlantic repositioning cruises generally range in length from 11 to 21 nights, with an average of 14 nights (seven or eight of them typically sea days).

Will the seas be rough?

It's up to Mother Nature. At times, the Atlantic can be smooth sailing, even in spring and fall. Yet unpredictable wind and water current patterns can create rough seas seemingly out of nowhere any time of year.

Captains can generally maneuver around storms — and try to do so whenever possible for the comfort of all onboard. Additionally, modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers that reduce a ship's rolling motion due to wind or waves.

However, if you're even slightly prone to seasickness, don't throw caution to the wind. You'll be better off on a larger ship (pick a midship cabin on a lower deck); also, be sure to pack medication, patches, bands or whatever works best for you. While it might seem counterintuitive, having a window or balcony actually helps offset seasickness since it offers fresh air and a horizon view. If you're concerned, opt for an ocean-view or balcony cabin over an inside one.

Which side of the ship is best for a transatlantic crossing?

It honestly doesn't make much difference whether you book a cabin on the port (left) or starboard (right) side of the ship since most daytime views will be of the ocean. However, if you're departing from a Mediterranean port, say Rome or Barcelona, for a southerly crossing, book a starboard cabin; this might offer a view of the Rock of Gibraltar if your ship transits between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during daylight hours. For a U.S.-to-Europe eastward crossing, you'd want the opposite — a port-side cabin.

Similarly, if your crossing takes you from northern Europe on a northerly route to the U.S., and you want to be among the first to spot land (perhaps Greenland or Newfoundland), book a starboard cabin. If you are cruising into New York Harbor just before dawn and want to see the Statue of Liberty from your cabin, book on the port side.

More important for an Atlantic crossing location-wise is your cabin's deck number and whether the cabin is situated forward, midship or aft. Generally, the ship's movement through rough seas will feel less severe if your cabin is midship and on one of the lower or middle decks versus the top-most decks.

Which ports do transatlantic cruises visit?

Where you embark and disembark will determine your route and the ports you potentially call on. Ships repositioning to or from the Baltic Sea and the British Isles generally take a northerly route. Vessels sailing from the Mediterranean cross on a more southerly route, especially if they are repositioning to or from a winter home port in Florida.

On a northerly crossing, you can expect to embark in a port such as Copenhagen; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Southampton or New York. Depending on the length of the cruise, expect to call on ports in Ireland (Dublin or Cork), Iceland (Reykjavik), Greenland (Qaqortoq or Nuuk), Atlantic Canada (St. John's in Newfoundland, or Sydney or Halifax in Nova Scotia) and Bermuda (King's Wharf).

On a southerly crossing between Barcelona or Rome in the Mediterranean and Miami or Fort Lauderdale, typical ports of call include Madeira; Grand Canary or Tenerife in the Canary Islands; Ponta Delgada in the Azores; and one or two islands in the Caribbean, such as St. Maarten or Puerto Rico.

Is it better to book an eastbound or westbound cruise?

Which direction you book really depends on whether you're aboard for the experience or you're using the crossing as a substitute for a flight to reach the other side of the ocean. Below are a few factors to keep in mind.

Aside from Queen Mary 2 crossings, westbound transatlantic repositioning cruises (from Europe to the U.S.) take place in the fall during the Atlantic hurricane season; some are also scheduled for mid-to-late November when storm formation has generally diminished. Eastbound cruises (from the U.S. to Europe) happen in spring, a season also often known for periods of gray skies and rain.

When considering westbound versus eastbound crossings, factor in the time change. While a transatlantic cruise is a terrific way to avoid the jet lag caused by flying across multiple time zones in a single day, you will be subject to almost daily reminders to reset your clock.

On westbound cruises, you'll have to set your clock back at night, thus gaining an extra hour of sleep on most days. On eastbound cruises, you'll set it ahead an hour and lose an hour of leisure time or sleep.

Another factor to keep in mind is that unless you plan to return home on another transatlantic cruise, you'll also need to book a one-way flight. Before committing to a specific eastbound or westbound itinerary, always check your flight options. One-way tickets are sometimes more expensive than round-trip fares.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025

There are dozens of opportunities to cross the Atlantic by cruise ship, but here are some of the best itineraries available in the next two years.

Cunard's Queen Mary 2

• Transatlantic crossings: May to December 2024 and 2025

There's nothing quite like it. Cunard 's weekly transatlantic crossing between New York and Southampton aboard the 2,691-guest Queen Mary 2 celebrates the grand age of ocean liners with a level of pomp and ceremony that appeals to Cunard loyalists, bucket-listers and memory-making couples or families celebrating a milestone anniversary or birthday.

These eight-night eastbound and six-night westbound voyages are all about the sea. There are interludes of culinary enjoyment and evening entertainment designed for travelers who appreciate formality and glamour.

A typical day might include time in the library perusing the largest book collection at sea, getting an illuminating astronomy lesson in the onboard planetarium and enjoying traditional afternoon tea.

The evening lineup generally starts with a multicourse dinner (same table and same waiter nightly) followed by a Broadway-inspired show, an abridged Shakespeare play or even a magic act. The ship is also famous for its Gala Evenings, capped off with Champagne sipping and dancing to a live orchestra. Yes, pack those ballgowns and tuxes.

Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady

• 16-night Rome to Miami: Nov. 28-Dec. 14, 2024
• 15-night Miami to Casablanca and Barcelona cruises: May 3-18, 2025

Virgin Voyages ' 2,770-guest Scarlet Lady has an onboard ambience that rivals a youthful beach club. Passengers and crew will keep the party going day and night this fall on a 16-night Rome to Miami transatlantic sailing. The sailing has calls on Barcelona and Malaga in Spain; Funchal on the island of Madeira; and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Or, party in reverse on the ship's 15-night Miami to Casablanca and Barcelona crossing in May 2025. It stops in Grand Canary and Santa Cruz de Tenerife; Casablanca, Morocco; and Barcelona.

The ship's 20 excellent dining venues, cutting-edge entertainment (campy and a bit naughty — think Drag Queen Bingo), impressive lineup of wellness classes (from yoga at sunrise to On-the-Upswing Bungee aerobics) and fun activities ('90s Boy Band Dance Class, anyone?) provide plenty of ways to pass the time.

Cruise fares start at $4,384 per cabin (or less than $2,200 per person) for the Rome-to-Miami sailing and $3,706 per cabin (or less than $1,900 per person) for the Miami-to-Barcelona sailing.

Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream

• 13-night eastbound transatlantic cruise: May 5-18, 2024
• 13-night westbound transatlantic cruise: Oct. 20-Nov. 2, 2024

Certain Disney fans — namely childless adult couples and empty nesters — love the brand's storytelling and Imagineering but prefer not to share a two-week cruise with hundreds of kids and teens. These 13-night eastbound and westbound crossings from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona and from Southampton to Fort Lauderdale aboard 2,500-passenger Disney Dream offer a solution to that dilemma.

Each of these transatlantic cruises occurs when almost everyone ages 5 to 18 is still in school. Yes, some kids will likely be on board, but certainly not in overwhelming numbers.

These crossings feature nine to 11 sea days during which Disney Cruise Line offers all kinds of immersive entertainment, excellent onboard dining and a southerly route in spring that means plenty of pool time. On top of that, each sailing includes a mix of culturally rich ports.

Eastbound fares for balcony cabins start at $4,516 for two adults (or about $2,258 per person). Westbound fares are a bit pricier, starting at $5,517 for an inside cabin ($2,708 per person).

Holland America's Nieuw Statendam

• 28-night Adriatic Dream and Passage to America: Nov. 2-30, 2024

For a shoulder-season meander through the Adriatic and Mediterranean followed by a transatlantic crossing, Holland America 's 28-night Adriatic Dream and Passage to America visits 14 ports in seven countries. This makes it a true hybrid of an ocean crossing and a traditional cruise.

The sailing, aboard the 3,665-passenger Nieuw Statendam, departs from Athens and visits ports in Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Albania, Spain and Portugal before arriving in Fort Lauderdale. Of the 12 sea days, two include scenic cruising.

The voyage takes place in November, so expect temperatures to be on the cooler side in most ports and during the crossing. It's a good thing, then, that Nieuw Statendam has an indoor pool with a retractable roof. Holland America passengers, mostly older retirees, can also pass the time dining at each of the 10 onboard restaurants and enjoy entertainment that includes live bands at the B.B. King's Blues Club and Rolling Stone Rock Room.

At $2,499 per person for an inside cabin and $3,749 per person for a balcony cabin, fares are a great deal for a four-week sailing.

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Ascent and Celebrity Apex

• 13-night Spain, Portugal and Bermuda transatlantic: Oct. 26-Nov. 8, 2024
• 13-night Bermuda and Portugal transatlantic: March 8-21, 2025

Celebrity Cruises ' Spain, Portugal and Bermuda transatlantic sailing from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale offers 13 nights aboard its newest ship, Celebrity Ascent. The sailing features port calls in Alicante, Spain; Gibraltar; Ponta Delgada; and King's Wharf, along with eight sea days.

Accommodating 3,260 passengers, Celebrity Ascent is a megaship designed with adults in mind. On board, you'll find multiple hot tubs but no waterslides, contemporary decor, 32 sophisticated food and beverage venues (including Voyages, Daniel Boulud's restaurant at sea, bookable at extra cost), an indoor solarium pool, a glittering Grand Plaza housing the line's signature Martini Bar, and nightly entertainment ranging from high-tech theater productions to multisensory events in Eden.

Inside cabin fares start at $1,353 per person and balcony cabin fares at $2,399 per person.

If you prefer to cross the Atlantic in spring 2025, take sister Edge Class ship Celebrity Apex , which carries 2,910 passengers. It will sail a 13-night Bermuda and Portugal transatlantic cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona with port calls at Bermuda's Royal Naval Dockyard; Ponta Delgada; and Valencia.

Inside cabins for that cruise start from $799 per person and balcony rooms from $1,272 per person.

Viking's Viking Mars

• 20-night Atlantic and Mediterranean Horizons: March 27-April 16, 2025

Passengers aboard Viking Mars for its 20-night Atlantic and Mediterranean Horizons sailing from Fort Lauderdale to Rome will meander through the Caribbean to the French-Dutch island of St. Martin/St. Maarten. They will spend six days crossing the Atlantic and call on Madeira and then overnight in Barcelona. Then, they will visit the French ports of Sete and Marseille, followed by Monte Carlo, Monaco, and another overnight in Livorno, Italy (gateway to Florence).

The 930-passenger Viking Mars is an adults-only ship featuring a sleek Scandinavian design. Guests can enjoy elevated (and complimentary) dining in eight venues, as well as daily activities that include lectures by guest speakers and resident historians. ( Viking bills itself as "the thinking person's cruise.")

They will also get unlimited access to the thermal suite at the Liv Nordic Spa, a main pool with a retractable roof (there's also an aft infinity pool and hot tub), and complimentary beer and wine with lunch and dinner.

What is a Repositioning Cruise? 

For those Savvy cruisers who love relaxing leisure days on a cruise, nothing beats the appeal of repositioning cruises. Spring and Autumn are important times of the year for these cruisers as this is when some great cruise deals are available, and cruise ship occupancy rates are generally lower.

Though some ships spend the entire year sailing identical itineraries in a single location, many relocate to follow the sun. As part of their itinerary planning, cruise lines move ships from one cruise region to another, referred to as repositioning cruises or relocation cruises. For example, very few ships stay in Europe as the season turns from Autumn/Fall to Winter.

Between September and November, ships start crossing from the UK and Europe to the US and the Caribbean. With different routings, ships call a visit Iceland, Greenland and Canada en route or take in the Fall in New England. Likewise, in Spring, many ships, having spent winter in the Caribbean and South America, head back to the UK and Europe via the Azores, Canary Islands and the Iberian Peninsula. These one-way voyages often have discounted fares to attract guests to fill ships on these non-regular sailing schedules.

Repositioning Cruises Are Also Known As

Cruise line marketing teams are very creative in their quest for more bookings for repositioning cruises. Often these cruises are “ Themed ” with topics ranging from Food and Wine Extravaganzas to Theatre and Big Band music. Onboard enrichment onboard programmes and guest speakers also make these voyages very appealing.

The marketing gurus also have some other tricks when naming these relocation or repositioning cruises and often use alternative names to help entice guests to book. “Transit” or “Transition Cruises”, “Eastbound or Westbound Crossings”.

You may also see terms like “One-Way”, “Panama Canal”, “Suez Canal”, “Transpacific”, and “Transatlantic”. Some Ultra Luxury cruise lines have now adopted Extended Explorations to describe longer voyages to different parts of the world, e.g. Europe to Asia or Australasia.

Where Do Repositioning Cruises Go?

The most common repositioning cruise routes are “transatlantic” from Caribbean/Florida ports to European ports and vice versa.

The winter and spring months are a very popular time to cruise the Caribbean as the weather in that part of the world tends to be ideal too. But come the summer season, Mediterranean and European cruises are extremely popular itineraries.

As a result, the cruise lines must reposition their fleets from Florida to Europe in the late Spring. There are many ships that base themselves in ports like Fort Lauderdale or Miami in the winter that are transferred to ports like Barcelona and Rome to run summer itineraries. In the autumn/fall months, it’s the reverse repositioning of cruise routes and this cycle starts all over again.

These transatlantic repositioning cruises are the most common routes. But there are actually many more repositioning cruise routes that happen during these seasonal changes. Here’s a look at some of the more common Spring (March-May) repositioning cruise routes.

• Caribbean, Florida, and other Southern US ports to European ports
• Caribbean, Florida, and other Southern US ports to Pacific Northwest ports such as Vancouver
• South America to Europe (less frequent and often European lines)
• Australia to Asia (particularly Singapore)
• Asia/Oceania to Pacific Northwest (less frequent)
• Other: Every once in a while, there is just an odd repositioning route in which a cruise line may be repositioning a ship not just for a season, but changing a ship’s itinerary on a more permanent basis. Or they may just be less common repositioning cruise routes. Use some creative search filters and find these unique voyages, which may pack a very rare and interesting repositioning cruise itinerary. We’ve seen some interesting itineraries, for example, from Australia through the Pacific islands to Hawaii!

Here’s a look at some of the more common  Fall/Autumn (September-November) repositioning cruise routes.

As you can see they are essentially the opposite of the Spring Repositioning Cruises routes.

• Europe to Caribbean, Florida, and other Southern US ports
• Pacific Northwest (e.g., Vancouver) to the Caribbean, Florida, and other Southern US ports.
• Europe to South America ports (less frequent and often European lines)
• Asia (particularly Singapore) to Australia
• Pacific Northwest to Asia/Oceania (less frequent)
• Other: Every once in awhile, there is just an odd repositioning route in which a cruise line may be repositioning a ship not just for a season, but changing a ship’s itinerary on a more permanent basis. Or they may just be less common. Use some creative search filters and find these unique voyages, which may pack a very rare and interesting itinerary. Longer Voyages and more Relaxing Sea Days​

Whenever you book a repositioning cruise, you should generally expect fewer ports of call. More days at sea means more time to relax and enjoy the ship and all its amenities. Don’t worry about being bored – cruise ships offer more than enough activities to keep you busy. However, this is an ideal opportunity to unwind far away from any distractions.

Life seems simpler, surrounded by nothing but blue sea. Larger ships typically have more activities for you to enjoy. Transatlantic repositioning cruises are always popular, but there are many other you can consider.

Value for Money

Repositioning cruises offer some of the best deals in the cruising industry . It is a cost-effective way to travel from the US to Europe or reverse if you have the time. With cruise companies anxious to fill their cabins for these trips, prices can sometimes be very attractive. Some repositioning cruises across the Atlantic can cost as little as $65 per person per day.

Not bad, considering you are getting an all-inclusive deal with high-quality accommodation, food, entertainment, transportation, and some unusual ports of call along the way! Always look at the daily rate for your cruise and see how it compares with other cruise line sailings.

Fewer Guests on Board

We have always found that, particularly on transatlantic repositioning cruises, there are fewer guests on board. That means more space to chill out and relax, plus with fewer guests to attend to; the service levels can be higher.

The resulting ratio shows the number of passengers each crew member is expected to look after. The ultimate ratio is 1:1 or better. This means as a passenger you should expect exceptional service. In theory, the more attractive the ratio (i.e. the fewer passengers each crew member must look after, the better the service.

Enrichment Programs

These programs are one of the big plusses for us. Most cruise lines offer extensive enrichment programs allowing you to expand your mind (at the same time as increasing your waistline with all the tempting food choices onboard).

You could learn to cook, dance, play the organ or perhaps bridge is your thing?. We have even experienced learning about photography , how to create videos, and much more. It’s like taking half a dozen adult education classes all in one week!

Entertainment

Today’s cruise ships offer a wide range of entertainment, including Bingo and trivia games to shows featuring magicians, comedians and even some stunning Broadway productions. Repositioning Cruises are a great way to enjoy these facilities. Seabourn has a fantastic show entitled an Evening with Sir Tim Rice. Music lovers can choose between elegant Classical string quartets and raucous dance bands.

There are often smaller venues where you can dance the night away, listening to your favourite music. If you’re feeling lucky, you can visit the casino. Shopaholics can browse the onboard shops and snap up some duty-free bargains. If this is all too much for you, you can retire to your cabin or suite ad watch a movie on the on-demand entertainment system.

Our first transatlantic repositioning cruise was with Cunard . To avoid the problem of time zone changes, they adjust the ship’s time at noon each day by one hour. In this way, you avoid the issue of the one-hit time change.

So rather than crossing half a dozen time zones in one night, you make the change gradually, one hour at a time. By cruising east to west, you gain an hour of sleep almost every other night. All this means you arrive at your destination with no Jet Lag.

World-class Locations

Repositioning cruises generally begin or end in some of Europe’s finest cities, creating the perfect addition to a European adventure. The most popular itineraries include Rome, Lisbon, and Barcelona, but the repositioning circuit also includes European wonders like Athens and Venice.

Whatever your itinerary, take some time to experience the architecture in Barcelona, take a gondola ride along a Venetian canal, or get lost in the antiquities of the stunning cities of Athens or Rome.

Unusual or Offbeat Ports of Call

A repositioning cruise across the Atlantic will more than likely stop at one or more of the exotic islands off the coast of West Africa.

Possibilities include the Island of Madeira, part of Portugal, a floral wonder with unusual hiking trails and watercourses; the Azores Islands also part of Portugal, known for whale-watching and pineapple plantations; or one of Spain’s seven Canary Islands where the weather seems stuck in an eternal spring, and dormant volcanoes add to the natural beauty. Other common ports include Malaga and Cadiz on Spain’s southern coast and Moroccan cities like Tangier and Casablanca.

Many times the ports of call during your repositioning cruise are a little more off-the-beaten-track than standard ports, meaning you can often visit regions a little more exotic and varied when compared to previous voyages.

DISCOUNTED New Ship Experiences

Sailing on newer cruise ships can be very expensive, particularly if you are lucky enough to sail on an inaugural cruise. Bearing in mind that most cruise ships are built in European shipyards, these new ships often have to transit to home ports elsewhere in the world.

These initial relocation or repositioning cruises can often be snapped up for a bargain and can be a great way to experience a new ship at a discount. They also provide an opportunity to visit beautiful ports across two continents on the latest ships. Often they will include stops in ports such as Malaga and Vigo, Spain, Lisbon, Portugal, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

An Alternative to Flying

Next time you’re booking an international flight, if is always worth checking to see if a repositioning cruise is going to the same place! Once you arrive at your destination, you will soon realise that there are sometimes better alternatives to flying everywhere. Instead of hours in a cramped seat, unless you upgrade to business or first class, and the associated jet lag, you will be enjoying luxurious service and a private stateroom.
