Chocolate Farm Tour

Kauai chocolate tour.

Our “branch-to-bar” educational Chocolate Farm Tour and Tasting at Lydgate Farms on Kauai’s East Side.

There is SO MUCH to learn about chocolate! And our Kauai chocolate tour finishes with an extensive chocolate tasting course where we teach you the fine art of being a chocolate connoisseur, taste all of the award-winning chocolate from our farm, and show you the amazing distinctive flavors of bean-to-bar chocolate — even more diverse than those found in wine.

We operate rain or shine, making visiting Lydgate Farms Kauai’s best rainy day activity. Space is limited and our tour is often sold out so make reservations in advance of your visit to guarantee your spot.

*We also offer a Deluxe Adult ticket — which can be selected at checkout. Designed for the ultimate connoisseur, this ticket includes a customizable top-shelf chocolate collection delivered to you after your tour. One per couple is recommended for the ultimate chocolate experience. Each Deluxe Adult ticket includes one of these packages — limit of 4 per reservation. This ticket type is unique in that it includes both the tour and chocolate to take home priced with a club discount.

  • Chevron down Change the Way you Think About Chocolate

Hawaii is the only state where the chocolate tree grows, and the best place to experience a live chocolate tree orchard is the Lydgate family’s 46-acre farm. You’re invited to enjoy Chocolate From Branch to Bar, an educational guided tour of everything there is to know about chocolate, including growing cacao trees, the taste of fresh chocolate fruit, harvesting, fermentation, and sun drying of cacao beans, all the way to an extensive tasting highlighting the fascinating diversity of flavors found in Hawaiian cacao. In addition to all the tropical fruit and chocolate we taste, the tour is a visual feast as well, so be sure to bring your camera.

  • Chevron down Botanical Tour and Tropical Fruit Tasting

The first part of our three-hour guided tour is especially fun for fruit and flower lovers, as we stroll through our gardens, stopping frequently to taste the tropical fruits that are in season. Depending on the month, these may include Tahitian lime, Hawaiian sugar cane, lilikoi, rambutan, longan, lychee, soursop, sapodilla, eggfruit, ka’u orange, apple banana, mountain apple, mamey sapote, chocolate sapote, and more. You’ll also taste our Farm’s award-winning honey, and see vanilla beans growing on the vine, plus dozens of exotic tropical plants such as our rare red sealing-wax palms and black bamboo. All along, your guides share our farm’s part in creating sustainable diversified agriculture on Kauai.

After the main fruit tasting we reach the chocolate orchard, and here we cut open a ripe chocolate pod so you can taste fresh cacao fruit. We then move into our chocolate tasting tent, where you sit comfortably in the shade while we explain the post-harvest processing of cacao. As you may know, dark chocolate is actually health food, and your guides explain its antioxidant and other health benefits, as well as outline how you can make chocolate from scratch in your home kitchen.

  • Chevron down Chocolate Tasting

Best of all, you’ll enjoy an extensive dark chocolate tasting with all of the chocolate grown on our farm, compared with examples from all over the world that highlight the distinctive flavors found in craft chocolate. Similar to a wine tasting, we teach you how to taste chocolate like a connoisseur. You’ll also learn chocolate’s history, from its discovery by the first Mesoamericans, to its revered status as a divine plant in the Olmec, Mayan and Aztec cultures, to its introduction to Europe in the 1500s, to the rise of industrial milk chocolate, to the modern bean-to-bar chocolate movement and Hawaii’s place in the new American chocolate scene.

  • Chevron down Family-Friendly Options

Although we no longer accept reservations for children under the age of 7, we do invite those families with small children to stop by our gift shop between 9:30 am and 2:30 pm Monday through Friday. There we have a friendly team member who will offer you chocolate samples and give you fascinating information. And you’ll have the opportunity to purchase our farm products. We find this to be the best option for families with small children and hope that you will join us there!

Common Questions & Answers About the Tour

  • Chevron down Are children allowed on the tour?

Children 7-12 are welcome on the three hour tour. We are no longer taking bookings for young children 6 and under. We do invite those families with small children to come to our gift shop for a free chocolate tasting and fun information.

  • Chevron down Do I have to come on the tour to see the farm?

Monday-Friday from 9:30 am-2:30 pm we have a drive-up gift shop that’s free and open for drop-ins (all ages welcome, no reservation required). Here we have a friendly tasting guide who will help you learn about our cacao farm while you taste delicious samples of Hawaiian-grown chocolate. Please note that we do not offer self-guided tours. Ask your tasting guide for more information about our guided farm tours.

  • Chevron down The booking form won’t let me add adults to my booking.

We may be sold out. Please give us a call and leave a message, or send us an email. We’ll do our best to fit you on a tour or get you on a waiting list. Depending on the season, we recommend booking up to one month in advance as our tour sells out regularly.

  • Chevron down The website won’t let me add me enough kids to my booking.

We allow child age 7-12 for each adult booking. If you have more kids than adults in your party you can call us, send us an email to let us know. Parties with more children than adults may be more suited to a visit at our drive up gift shop, open M-F 9:30 am-2:30 pm.

  • Chevron down Is there a lot of walking on the tour?

It’s about 200 yards total, and we stop frequently at tasting stations. If someone in your party has a mobility concern please let us know by phone or email when you book. We have an ATV like vehicle available to assist for part of the tour, however this is an outdoor activity and may not be suited for those with real mobility challenges. If this is the case for you please call us at (808) 821-1857 so we can advise you on our accommodations.

  • Chevron down Did you actually win recognition as growing the best cacao beans in the world?

Why yes we did! We have been recognized as growing the Top 50 Best cacao beans in the world in a global competition — sort of like the chocolate-growing Olympics. We have been recognized by Cocoa of Excellence in 2017, 2021 and 2023 for this honor⏀most recently winning Gold!

  • Chevron down Can you explain the different ticket types?

Sure!  The adult ticket is our main product, select it for adults (13+up). The Child ticket is for older kids ages 7-12. We recommend children 6 and under come along with parents to our drive-up giftshop where we have an experience better suited for them.

The Deluxe Adult ticket is for the ultimate chocolate connoisseur. It differs from our adult ticket in that after the tour each Deluxe Adult ticket holder will receive a top-shelf customizable chocolate package at our farm giftshop. This ticket type is unique in that it includes both the tour and chocolate to take home priced with a club discount.

kauai chocolate tour

I went to three major gardens on Kauai, and this was the smallest by far, but was also the best! Princeville Botanical Gardens is definitely a must see when in Kauai. Small but mighty, it has lots to see and even a chocolate lecture. The guide Brad is a fountain of knowledge and a real asset to the gardens. You will learn cool things and see amazing plants in an amazing little garden that started out as someone's yard! Really like it! Next trip I will visit this again.

kauai chocolate tour

Lost in a residential area, this 9-acre natural garden is a nice change from the more touristy venues. Beautiful landscaping and a guide with solid knowledge of plant origins (well done, Donna). My wife said this was her favorite part of our week in Kauai. The garden is located in the middle of a private residential area with no signage and once you are there, you'll know why you came.

kauai chocolate tour

This three-hour tour of the grounds of a private formal garden was worth every penny. The guides are volunteers, who are very knowledgable and interact charmingly with visitors. We learned about many local and foreign plants and at several points we stopped to sample local fruit and honey, all grown on the premises. We also learned about different kinds of chocolate and tested our taste buds' sensitivity to the various flavors.

kauai chocolate tour

Beautiful garden! This is a must see if you are visiting Kauai! When you first arrive, the garden does not seem like much due to its size, but with the guided tour you really see the beauty of the garden! The staff members are so kind and knowledgeable. You get to learn a lot about Kauai and the plants that are found in the garden. And don't forget about the amazing chocolate tasting in the middle of the tour! I recommend this garden to everyone!

COME SEE WHERE WE GROW AND MAKE OUR CHOCOLATE!

Engage your senses .. treat yourself to a chocolate  farm and factory tour.

Our farm & factory tours have proven to be very well  received, and we're thrilled that we've been providing a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.  However, requests for tours exceed our capacity to provide them, and still have time for farm work and for ourselves.

Your best chance of securing a tour reservation is to do so a couple of months (or more) in advance.

We limit tours to two per calendar week; though the specific day(s) of the week are not set in stone.

We've found it's not practical to try to do "brief visits".  There's just too much that is new, interesting, interconnected, and demanding of attention, to be able to squeeze it all in in less than 2 hours.

Unlike some venues, self-guided tours on a working farm are, also, not a practical option.

If we're unable to schedule a tour for you we hope you will have opportunity to visit our island paradise in the future and will consider scheduling a tour during that visit.

W hether or not you're able to schedule a tour, m ay you experience and carry with you, the "aloha spirit" that we believe makes our island paradise such a special place. .

Please see our Location page for information about where we are; and why we don't publish directions on our website.

Tours  include:,       talk story about the history of our farmland and how we came to be chocolate farmers, ,      a walking tour of our farm , including, but not limited to, our cacao orchards,,      a visit to our first-of-it's-kind, off-the-grid, solar-powered, certified-commercial-kitchen chocolate factory , to see, step-by-step, how chocolate is made,,      a chance to get up close and personal with a wide variety of other tropical fruit trees and other plants , many with enchanting aromas and/or tastes; including banana, coconut, mango, papaya, lychee, breadfruit (ulu), avocado, lime, lemon, orange, tangelo, and cinnamon as well vanilla orchid, passion fruit (liliko'i) vines, ginger (ornamental and edible) and ti.  shade and windbreak bushes and trees include mock orange, gliricidia (madre de cacao), ice cream bean, sweet tamarind, hong kong orchid, and panax.  we also have a small garden with pineapple, tomato, asparagus, a variety of herbs,,      a hawaiian-chocolate tasting experience, including houlau chocolate,      an opportunity to  learn about  various houlau products   and,,       most importantly.. an opportunity to experience a part of kauai not usually accessible to the public, where one can be in the moment, relax,... and connect with "ha", the breath of lif e...as in alo ha .  , group composition:   we will, on a selective basis, include more than one ohana/co-traveler group to attend a given tour.  children are welcome, and can add a "magical" element to the tour.  however, please consider that children less than 6 years old often cannot maintain focus and/or tolerate the 3+ hour duration and stimulus overload of the tour without need of supportive "time out" with an adult., group size:   we prefer the closeness that comes with small group interaction; nominally 2 to 6 persons.  exceptions to this will certainly be considered., time of day/duration:   we recommend touring in morning hours when everyone's fresh.  duration can vary considerably depending on group size, areas & levels of interest, your available time etc., usually 3 to 4 hours., cost: $50.00 per person.   children under 12 free when accompanied by an adult., where are we:   houlau farm is located in the moloaa "hui lands"..a farming district between kapaa and kilauea in the northeast area of kauai.  as the farm is, intentionally , difficult to find in the unmarked dirt roads of the hui lands, specific instructions as to how to get there will be provided along with your reservation confirmation., special needs:   we use a modified golf cart on the farm (no top) and have used it to transport visitors who have difficulty walking.  it's no beauty..."it ain't got a back seat or a rear window, but it still gets you where you  wanna go...", to schedule a tour, contact either sally or howard or use our contact form  and we'll take it from there., a few tips to enhance your safety and enjoyment:, houlau farm is a working farm.   as such there are potential hazards, both readily visible, and inapparent.  we ask everyone stay with us as we guide you and pay close attention to directions and cautionary announcements., mosquitoes.   please come prepared for the presence of mosquitoes.  if you're a "mosquito magnet", you'd be well advised to wear long sleeves, long pants, socks and shoes (as howard does when working on the farm)., rain.   we celebrate the rain: "no rain, no rainbows".  nonetheless, please watch the weather forecast and be prepared with rain jacket or umbrella as well as shoes that can get wet., hydration.   the tour can easily fill the planned time, much of which is outside, exposed to the powerful tropical sun.  the farm has potable water, nonetheless, it's wise to have water available that you can bring along on the farm tour., exposure.   speaking of the sun...sunglasses, a broad-brimmed hat, and sun block are encouraged as well., sanitation.   a restroom  is available in the chocolate factory..a minor miracle., moloa'a dirt.   the rich soil of moloaa is famous for it's red color and  it's  ability to stain anything and everything it comes into contact with, especially when wet..and the stains are permanent.  although the farm has matured to a point where direct exposure to dirt &/or mud is unlikely, we cannot guarantee your clothes will not become stained..
