Inspired by the pocket games soldiers carried in WWII , our handcrafted Travel Cribbage Board is one of the smallest folding cribbage boards on the market.  Smaller than a deck of cards and made to fit in your bike bag, backpack, or pocket, the 60-point laser-engraved birchwood board comes complete with 4 pegs for 2 players, which are stored safely inside the inset brass tube with a premium-grade cork plug. The dark brown leather is secured with an antique brass closure. Includes a handy minibook with rules of play.

Yes! The leather can be monogrammed with up to 4 characters using our 1/4" brass alphabet set. Monogramming can add to the turnaround time. Monogram placement is shown in the last photo. Learn more about monogramming.

When your board arrives, the leather will be a little stiff. It will lay flat as the leather relaxes, which you can speed up by folding and roughhousing the leather (it's tough equestrian leather!). Cleans easily with mild soapy water. Leather care dressing available in our  Parts  section. 

Walnut Studiolo proudly uses only full grain vegetable-tanned leather, tanned in the USA by a fourth-generation family-owned tannery. 

Let's break down what that really means. 

" Leather " at Walnut means only the highest quality, full grain, un-sanded, non-stamped, natural cowhides. (For a wood analogy, it's like using a real wood board instead of particleboard or veneer.) 

" Vegetable-tanned " means the hides are "tanned" (preserved for long life) using naturally-occurring oak bark and plant tannins. Just how pretty much all leather was tanned for millennia until the Industrial Revolution. (Nowadays over 90% of leather is tanned with  chromium/mercury - the leather we use is the 10%.) 

" American-made " means that the cow hides, which are a by-product using up the waste created by the beef industry, are from American cows, and the hides are tanned in American tanneries, which follow more stringent EPA environmental laws. (Vanishingly rare these days.)

" Uses " means we take the raw material by the hide and transform it through: cutting and shaping; hand-dying with natural oil dyes (which is like staining wood to allow the woodgrain to shine through, rather than painting it); and treating the edges into all the products you see here on our website. 

Your Walnut Studiolo Product

Since we're using such a natural material, your product may look slightly different from the product pictures. Real, natural leather hide has unique characteristics that individually personalize each product. Each piece of leather is distinctive in its base color, grain, and markings, which may include small scars, mars, or blemishes that are a natural part of the cow's life and a sign of the high quality of the leather we use.

About Bridle Leather

Walnut uses "English-style bridle leather" for a very few of our products, each of which is labeled in the Materials. Bridle leather is vegetable-tanned leather that is dyed at the tannery and infused with extra waxes and oils for more weather resistance. It's important for only a few products, such as our Bicycle Mud Flaps. The tannery dyes create a homogenous surface with a matte finish that matches the color of our hand-dyed veg-tan leather but not the lustrous natural leather grain.

Our vegetable-tanned leather does great in all weather, rain or shine. It is the same kind of old-fashioned heritage leather used in equestrian gear (horse tack), so it is meant to be used outdoors and in the elements! 

Being left out in a hot, direct sun is much harder on this kind of leather than wetness and rain; however, after getting wet the leather needs time to dry or else it will mildew. 

Vegetable-tanned leather gains more of a luster, darkens a bit, and becomes softer with use (unlike garment leather, which fades and becomes more brittle with time and use). Un-dyed vegetable-tanned leather (our "Natural" color) will "tan" or darken in sunlight.

Vegetable-tanned leather just loves to be touched - the oils in your hands naturally condition the leather the more you use it. In fact, some of our products that are constantly handled, like our bicycle sew-on bar wraps, may rarely ever need a conditioning treatment - if they look lustrous and shiny from your hands touching and sweating on them regularly, then no need to worry. 

Whether it's veg-tan or bridle leather, we recommend conditioning the leather occasionally, especially if it starts to look dry, using the care recommendations below. 

Leather Care Recommendations 

If your product is starting to look dry, take the time to give it a little care with a conditioning treatment. Care for it as little as once every year or two for occasional use with good storage conditions and as much as once a quarter for heavy outdoor use in the direct sun with dry humidity. 

Cleaning Leather 

If your leather gets dirty, clean it with diluted mild castile soap (like unscented Dr. Bronners) or unscented dishwashing liquid. Dilute the soap/liquid at least 1:10 (it should not be sudsy), and allow to fully dry before conditioning.

Leather Conditioning Directions

Keep in mind that conditioning leather usually darkens it slightly . Don't worry, this is normal. In fact, doing this several times in a row can speed up the natural darkening process that happens during aging and can also help you fine-tune the color match, if for example, you're trying to match an aged Brooks saddle.  

• Assemble your leather care conditioning product of choice, two clean dry rags, and your clean, dry leather product. For a conditioning product, we recommend our own recipe of Leather Care Dressing  with beeswax for water resistance -- but you can use any commercially-available weather-proofing conditioner product designed for vegetable-tanned leather. For a basic treatment, you can also even use simple oils, like neatsfoot oil (best), mineral oil (second best), or even olive oil if water is less of an issue.
• Rub a coat of conditioning treatment into your product lightly using a clean dry rag. Even if it has been a while, use a light coat. Heavy coats of oil can impede breathability and encourage mildew growth.
• Buff dry with a second rag. 
• You can do this as many times as you like, even allowing the treatment to soak in overnight before buffing dry.

Q: what does "studiolo" mean .

A: "Studiolo" is  an architecture term  for a small private cabinet or study room. The "lo" is a diminutive , like "little studio." And Geoff is an architecture nerd. 

Q: Do you *really* make everything by hand in a garage?

A: Yes, really! We know, there's a lot of "handmade washing" these days and it's diluting the meaning for real people like us. Geoff makes everything in our home, in small batches. He uses hand-tools and everything. In 2016 , we upgraded our home garage from a two-car to a full-sized workshop by moving from urban Portland to the rural Oregon Coast. Q: Why on your prices different on Etsy?

Q: how does the leather hold up in the rain.

A: Great! Leather has always traditionally been an outdoor material (think equestrian gear, work boots, etc). We use the same high-quality leather used for horse gear and bridles, so it's designed to withstand the elements. Leather is an exceptionally durable material, which is why we like working with it. That said, we recommend taking care of your leather using the directions on our Leather Care page .  

Q: Can I use your bicycle products on my motorcycle? 

A: Sorry, but no! We don't recommend our products for use on motorcycles. We don't have access to a motorcycle to design them for. There's a wonderful motorcycle-specific leather craftsman in Oregon called  Langlitz Leathers  you might want to check out, or for your custom project, check out the website  Custom Made , or there are  other leathercrafters on Etsy  that may be able to help out.

Q: I wish my Walnut product were just a shade or two darker. Is there any way to darken it? 

A: Our vegetable-tanned leather darkens naturally with age and use, but you can speed up the process with a conditioning treatment.  Read more on our blog post.

Q: Where can I get the bike(s) shown in the product pictures?

A:  The bottom line is, you can make any bike beautiful and uniquely yours - that's the fun part! The two bicycles shown in most of our pictures are a 1980's Bianchi that we stripped completely down, had powder-coated in cream and chocolate colors, and re-built all the components from the ground up. The dark blue road bike with honey leather wraps on the handlebars and top tube is a 1970s era vintage French Detouron that we found on eBay, delivered straight from France.

How much will shipping cost?

It depends on what you order and when you need it! Use the Shipping Calculator in the Shopping Cart page to get an estimate. 

• Economy (2-7 Weeks, a little faster to Canada) : our Flat Rates and standard international shipping  originates with the US Postal Service (USPS)  and is delivered by the destination country's postal service, which can be slow (2-5 Weeks normally). Sometimes there is no last-mile tracking information, depending on the country. Some packages are first facilitated by Asendia (La Poste & Swiss Post) . Once the package has left the USA, it changes control to the destination country's post service, where they may collect import/VAT/GST taxes. We recommend you take the tracking number into your local post office to get tracking updates. If it has been over 40 days, please contact us to file an insurance claim to replace it.   
• Express (2-7 Days) : We also offer good negotiated rates with DHL Express  and FedEx International for greater reliability and tracking. The carrier collects taxes directly from you rather than requiring you to go into your local post office to pick it up. 

What about taxes?

With the exception of our promotional Canada Flat Rate DDP service , we do not collect international import taxes or VAT/GST taxes on your behalf. 

When your package arrives, your country may charge you additional taxes on the order. We cannot reimburse you for your country's import taxes. Please check with your local country's customs office to find out how much taxes will be to your country - they could easily be as much as 20%-30% of the purchase price, including the cost of shipping.

We accept returns  of clean and undamaged merchandise in  re-sellable condition within  30 days of delivery   for exchange or refund. Return shipping cost is the responsibility of the customer.

If you're not satisfied with your purchase for any reason,   just let us know why, and we'll work with you to find a satisfactory resolution. Please   contact us   so we can talk about the options. 

We do not accept returns on the following items:   custom, gift cards, "AS-IS," monogrammed, or laser-engraved products, and closeout sales (unless there is a serious manufacturing defect). In certain uncommon cases, we reserve the right to refuse excessive returns, entirely at our discretion. 

Refunds   will be credited to the original payment method for the product value only (not the cost of shipping or any gift wrapping fees).  For orders that received a free shipping promotion, the refund will be less the actual cost  of the original shipping.

Exchanges   may be issued as a store credit, or as a direct exchange for other products, which we will ship to you with no additional shipping charge (US addresses only; shipping charges apply to international exchanges). Any difference in total value will either be refunded or invoiced. International exchanges will be marked accordingly on customs forms. 

Replacement Parts Policy:   We provide a replacement guarantee for missing or damaged parts under the following conditions: 1) Notification within 30 days of delivery, and 2) Provide an unboxing photo or video demonstrating the issue, and 3) The evidence does not contra-indicate the claim. We will research each issue within 72 hours, including the carrier's package shipping weight and combined parts weights. Please note the same policy applies regardless of where the order is shipped: if the order is shipped to a third party, such as a contractor, we have the same requirements. We have a two-step QA/QC process to ensure we fulfill and ship your orders correctly the first time, with a 99.8% perfect order track record. Please carefully review the package, try opening the box upside down to make sure there are no "false bottoms", and count the parts prior to contacting us.

After the return window,  we may accept returns of non-defective merchandise on a discretionary basis for exchange or merchandise credit for the purchased value of the product.

Restocking fees  may be assessed  i n some cases, depending on the circumstances, such as a large handle orders with complex kitting and parts, not to exceed 10%. 

Nonrefundable payment processing fees may apply.  If payment processors, including PayPal and/or ShopPay, do not refund payment processing commissions (approximately  3%), then the funds are unavailable for us to return to you.

Undeliverable packages   (such as: incorrect addresses, non-deliverable addresses, unclaimed packages, refusal to pay customs duties, or failed delivery attempts) are considered abandoned. They may be destroyed by the carrier or returned to sender. If we receive them back returned to sender, we will hold them for up to 6 months for re-delivery or return instructions. Please contact us if you have not received your package so we can discuss options, including shipping insurance. Please note, shipping fees for re-delivery are paid by the recipient. 

Warranty:   If you believe there is a quality issue or manufacturing defect on our part, please  contact us  and if possible provide photos to help explain the problem. Assuming we concur and a return or exchange is required, in these cases we will provide you with a postage-paid return label (US addresses only). After a makeshift cribbage match in the Talkeetna Mountains, played on a sheet of paper with small bits of trash, it was apparent that a better travel cribbage solution was in order. For the ultralight backpacking enthusiast, nothing on the cribbage market had ever felt perfect. There was simply not enough room for cribbage, and it often got left behind on the coffee table.

But what if you could just toss a pack of cards in your backpack and have the whole game with you? And so late at night, between adventures and business hours, atop a tile warehouse in Alaska, the first card box that's also a cribbage board was born.

Each box and deck of cards is designed by local Alaskan artist, Jessedeeks. Creating Cardboard Cribbage has been an adventure all on its own—hopefully it finds a home in your favorite travel bag. Enjoy!

How to Make A Cribbage Board – The Travel Size Addition

If you’re a fan of cribbage and enjoy woodworking, why not combine the two and create a unique travel cribbage board? In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through the process of crafting a travel cribbage board that opens up to store cards and pieces, making it a perfect companion for your on-the-go gaming needs.

Materials You Will Need: To get started, gather the following materials:

• The wood of your choice (recommend a dark wood with a light wood as an accent)
• Table Saw , planer, and router with a Dado blade
• Clamps and double-stick tape
• Sandpaper and finish (e.g., hand-rubbed oil)

Step 1 : Wood Selection I selected Chechen for its rich grain patterns and deep color.  I then used maple for a contrasting effect.

Step 2: Milling from one board:

In the video, I made a total of eight game boards.  However, I kept all the pieces together in one long board so I could mill one board to thickness instead of multiple smaller boards.  Working with small pieces and power tools can be unsafe.  I found it faster and safer to keep the board as one long length and cut it into smaller pieces in a later step.

Step 3: Joining the Top and Sides

I set up a dado stack with a sacrificial fence to protect the main fence so I could cut rabbets on each edge of the top and bottom.  The rabbet joint is what is going to join the top and sides of the cribbage board together.

Step 4: Sanding and Pre-Finishing

Before assembly, I did a quick sanding and pre-finish the inside face of the boxes. I marked out a safe area for joinery and tapped it off with painter’s tape.  The painter’s tape protects the joinery area, as glue does not stick to an oil finish very well.  I then apply a finish like hand-rubbed oil to bring out the wood’s color.  I only finished the inside facing parts because it will be much harder to apply finish to those areas after the cribbage box has been assembled.

Step 5: Assembly

When assembling the box, I clamped in both directions to make sure the rabbet joint was tight in all directions.  At this point, I still have not cut the cribbage game board apart.  It is easier to assemble one long tube than individual game boxes.

Step 6: Cutting Game Boards

I Square up one end of the assembled board and set a stop on my miter gauge to cut out game boards of the desired size.

Step 7: Attaching the ends:

I made the end caps a little oversized so I could use a pattern bit in the router to trim the ends flush to the game board, ensuring a perfect fit.  I glued on the back end but used double-stick tape to attach the front end temporarily. This will allow me to flush-trim the front end to size and also allow me to drill a hole for the lid to pivot on.  I can drill the hole all the way through the lid and into the box at the same time.  This ensures a perfectly located pivot hole.

Step 8: Adding Personalization

Add your personal touch by using a branding iron to mark your logo or maker’s mark on the cribbage board.

Step 9: Installing Magnets

Drill holes diagonally across the pivot point and install tiny rare earth magnets. Ensure the correct alignment of the poles by marking them with a Sharpie.

Step 10: Final Touches

Add a decorative touch round over the edges of the boards using a router to create a smooth and comfortable feel. Cut off the excess material for the pivot, glue it in place, and finish it off with a hand-rubbed oil.

How To Play Cribbage

Objective: The main objective in cribbage is to score points by creating combinations of cards through various card-playing phases.  The game is played to a certain number of points, often 121.

• Use a standard 52-card deck.
• Each player is dealt six cards, and the remaining four cards form the “crib.”

Card Values:

• Face cards (king, queen, jack) are worth 10 points each.
• Number cards are worth their face value.
• Aces are worth 1 point.
• Each player receives six cards.
• Players choose two cards to discard to the crib, which is a separate hand for the dealer.
• Non-dealer plays a card, and the dealer follows.
• Players alternate playing one card at a time, and the cumulative total of the cards played is tracked.
• Face cards count as 10, and players say the running total as they play their cards.
• If a player cannot play without exceeding 31, the other player continues until no more cards can be played.
• Players score points for reaching certain totals (15, 31, pairs, runs, etc.).
• The last player to play a card without exceeding 31 gets a point.
• Players reveal their hands and score points for combinations (pairs, runs, flushes) in both their own hand and the crib.
• Players score points for pairs, runs, flushes, and combinations totaling 15.
• The dealer scores the crib.
• If a player cannot play a card without exceeding 31 during the play, the opponent scores 1 point for a “Go.”
• Players count the points in their hands and the crib.
• The game is played to a certain number of points, often 121.

Common Scoring Combinations:

• Pair: 2 points
• Three of a kind (or “pair royal”): 6 points
• Four of a kind: 12 points
• Run of three or more cards: 1 point per card
• Fifteen (combination totaling 15): 2 points

Players take turns being the dealer, and the game continues in rounds until a player reaches the winning score.

These are the basic rules, and there are additional nuances and variations to cribbage. It’s a game that combines strategy, skill, and a bit of luck.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

• Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
• Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
• How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
• What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
• What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
• What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
